Abstract:Summary Intravenous injection of toluidine blue, a heparin antagonist, at a dose of 10 mg/kg. caused a decrease of serum calcium in lambs but not in adult ewes. The levels of inorganic phosphorus and magnesium were not changed. The hypocalcaemic effect of the dye was completely inhibited by heparin. Heparin and toluidine blue probably compete on the binding site of some blood component. It is suggested that toluidine blue causes hypocalcaemia by releasing endogenous calcitonin, since the dye produced no changes in serum calcium in thyroidectomized lambs. Zusammenfassung Der Hypokalzamieeffekt von Toluidinblau bei Schafen Intravenose Injektion von Toluidinblau, einem Heparin Antagonisten, in einer Dosis von 10 mg/kg verursachte eine Senkung des Serumcalciums bei Lammern, jedoch nicht bei erwachsenen Schafen. Der Gehalt an anorganischem Phosphor und Magnesium anderte sich nicht. Heparin verhinderte den hypocalcamischen Effekt vollstandig. Heparin und Toluidinblau wirken wahrscheinlich kompetitv hinsichtlich der Bindung an gewisse Blutbestandteile. Es wird die Vermutung geausert, Toluidinblau senke den Calciumspiegel infolge Absonderung von endrogenem Calcitonin, da der Farbstoff bei thyroidektomierten Lammern den Calciumspiegel nicht beeinfluste. L'heparine et le bleu de toluidine ont vaisemblablement une action competitive dans leur liaison avec certains composants sanguins. On suppose que le bleu de toluidine provoque une hypocalcemie par suite de la secretion d'une calcitonine endrogene etant donne que le colorant n'influence pas le taux calcique chez des aneaux thyroidectomies. Resumen El efecto hipocalcemico del azul de toluidina en ovejas La inyeccion intravenosa de azul de toluidina, un antagonista de la heparina, en una dosis de 10 mg./kg. causaba el descenso del calcio serico en corderos, pero no en las ovejas adultas. El contenido en fosforo inorganico y magnesio no variaba. La heparina impedia por completo el efecto hipocalcemico del colorante. La heparina y el azul de toluidina tal vez compitan con respecto a la fijacion de ciertos componentes de la sangre. Se expresa la sospecha de que el azul de toluidina cause hipocalcemia debido a la secrecion de calcitonina endogena, ya que el colorante no producia cambios en el nivel de calcio serico en corderos tiroidectomizados.
