Abstract:Many epidemiological reports stated a strong association between maternal infection and development of cerebral palsy, which is a major cause of cognitive impairment. The pathophysiological mechanism of intrauterine inflammation is complex. Recently, it was demonstrated that inflammation has a modulating effect on adult neurogenesis. In this study, we discovered the effect of maternal infection to hippocampal neuronal apoptosis, proliferation and differentiation, and cognitive development in the developing brains of neonatal rats. Morris water maze test was used to assess learning and memory. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay was used to determine neuronal apoptosis, immunostaining was conducted to assess neurogenesis, and Western blot for extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), cyclic AMP responsive element-binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus. Results demonstrated that maternal infection increased neuronal apoptosis and significantly impaired spatial learning and memory ability. Maternal infection significantly increased cell proliferation, accompanied by an increased expression of ERK (P3-P7), CREB (P3-P7) and BDNF (P3). On P28, there was no significant difference of cell survival and differentiation in two groups. These results suggest that variation in ERK activity and subsequent expression of its downstream targets, including CREB and BDNF might contribute, at least partially, to modulation of inflammation related cell proliferation, survival and differentiation. Maternal infection increased hippocampal neuronal apoptosis and affected cell proliferation and differentiation in neonatal rats, which may be regarded as an etiological factor in cognitive development impairment.
Perinatal inflammation is associated with social and motor impairments in preterm children without severe neonatal brain injury

Abstract:Objective: To test the association between exposure to perinatal inflammation - i.e. clinical chorioamnionitis or early-onset neonatal infection - in preterm children without severe neonatal brain injury and neurodevelopmental outcome at 30 months of corrected age (CA). Design: Cross-sectional study from a French regional cohort of clinical follow-up (SEVE Network). Patients: One hundred sixty-four surviving neonates without severe brain injury - namely, grade III and IV cerebral hemorrhage and cystic periventricular leukomalacia - and without late-onset neonatal inflammation exposure - namely, late-onset neonatal infection and necrotizing enterocolitis -, born at less than 33 weeks of gestational age from November 2011 to June 2015 and enrolled in the SEVE Network. Main outcome measure: Global developmental quotient (DQ) score of the revised Brunet-Lézine scale and its four indices measured by the same neuropsychologist at 30 months of CA. Results: After multivariate analysis, exposure to perinatal inflammation was not found significantly associated with a modification of the global DQ score (coefficient -1.7, 95% CI -4.8 to 1.3; p = 0.26). Exposure to perinatal inflammation was associated with a decrease of the gross motor function DQ score (coefficient -6.0, 95% CI -9.9 to -2.1; p < 0.01) and a decrease of the sociability DQ score (coefficient -5.1, 95% CI -9.2 to -0.9; p = 0.02). Language and visuospatial coordination DQ scores were not affected by exposure to perinatal inflammation. Conclusion: Exposure to perinatal inflammation in preterm children without severe neonatal brain injury is independently associated with decreased motor and social abilities at 30 months of CA.

Abstract:A growing body of literature supports the relationship of maternal inflammation with preterm birth and adverse neonatal outcomes, including infection and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. Mediators of inflammation, most notably proinflammatory cytokines, have been implicated as having an association with and perhaps playing a causal role in the pathogenesis, leading to adverse neonatal outcomes. Even though the association of cytokines with early adverse neonatal outcomes has been actively pursued as a line of research, there has been little integration of diverse findings across studies. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to appraise and classify empirical evidence from human studies for the association of cytokine levels in blood (serum, plasma, or cells; maternal, cord, or neonatal) with two adverse early outcomes in preterm infants: early infection and increased risk of neurologic damage. The review revealed that the proinflammatory cytokines most frequently linked with sepsis are in the interleukin (IL) 1 family as well as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and IL-6. The proinflammatory cytokines most frequently linked to neurologic insult in the reviewed studies were IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8. In all cases where IL-1β was studied, the levels were increased when there was neurologic insult. A better understanding of the relationship of these inflammatory substances with these adverse conditions is needed for the future development of maternal and neonatal biobehavioral nursing research.

Association between Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Preterm infants are at high risk for systemic inflammatory disorders, including sepsis, meningitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). The developing brain of the premature newborn is especially susceptible to the cascade of inflammatory mediators elaborated in these conditions that cross the blood-brain barrier. NEC, a severe and potentially fatal condition of the gut that occurs in premature newborns, is a prime example of how an inflammatory reaction, perhaps initially localized, can become generalized and cause systemic harm. One such result is brain injury, especially to the cerebral white matter, which may lead to neurodevelopmental abnormality and dysregulated behavior. Numerous studies have documented an association between necrotizing enterocolitis and neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI), but to date, the brain and behavioral deficits associated with neonatal NEC are not fully understood. We performed a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature to characterize brain injury and behavioral alterations associated with NEC. 7153 peer-reviewed published manuscripts were screened by two independent reviewers and evidence quality was assessed using GRADE criteria. Of these papers, 62 satisfied the criteria for our review (i.e., no case reports, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, or animal studies). Data from 32 papers using Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development to assess infant outcomes were included in the meta-analysis. Our findings support neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis having deleterious effects on brain and behavioral development and impact on cognitive function, risk of cerebral palsy and motor impairment, educational achievement, behavior, and neuroanatomy. We discuss herein findings of both short-term outcomes (1-3 years) and long-term outcomes (until 13 years). Our meta-analysis also indicates that NEC has a moderate effect size on infant development, with consistent impairment across mental, cognitive, language and motor domains.
C-section and systemic inflammation synergize to disrupt the neonatal gut microbiota and brain development in a model of prematurity

Abstract:Infants born very preterm (below 28 weeks of gestation) are at high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders, such as intellectual deficiency, autism spectrum disorders, and attention deficit. Preterm birth often occurs in the context of perinatal systemic inflammation due to chorioamnionitis and postnatal sepsis. In addition, C-section is often performed for very preterm neonates to avoid hypoxia during a vaginal delivery. We have developed and characterized a mouse model based on intraperitoneal injections of IL-1β between postnatal days one and five to reproduce perinatal systemic inflammation. This model replicates several neuropathological, brain imaging, and behavioral deficits observed in preterm infants. We hypothesized that C-sections could synergize with systemic inflammation to induce more severe brain abnormalities. We observed that C-sections significantly exacerbated the deleterious effects of IL-1β on reduced gut microbial diversity, increased levels of circulating peptidoglycans, abnormal microglia/macrophage reactivity, impaired myelination, and reduced functional connectivity in the brain relative to vaginal delivery plus intraperitoneal saline. These data demonstrate the deleterious synergistic effects of C-section and neonatal systemic inflammation on brain maldevelopment and malfunction, two conditions frequently observed in very preterm infants, who are at high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders.
Postnatal systemic inflammation and neuro-ophthalmologic dysfunctions in extremely low gestational age children

Abstract:Aim: Compared to infants born at term, children born very preterm are at increased risk of visual dysfunctions and neonatal systemic inflammation. Here, we explore whether these two propensities are related. Methods: As part of the ELGAN study, the concentrations of 16 mediators of inflammation were measured in blood obtained on postnatal days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 1062 children born before the 28th week of gestation. Presence of visual field deficit, strabismus and/or impaired visual fixation was recorded at age two. The concentrations of each protein were divided into quartiles within gestational week categories. We calculated odds ratios with 99% confidence intervals for having each disorder comparing children with concentration in the top quartile of each protein to children whose concentration was in the lower quartiles on the corresponding day. Analyses were adjusted for gestational age and birth weight Z-score. Results: Only one of 80 assessments (16 proteins on five different days) was significant for visual field deficit, and one for impaired fixation. No association was found between strabismus and any inflammatory mediator. Conclusion: None of the three neuro-ophthalmologic dysfunctions assessed at two years appears to be associated with systemic inflammation measured the first four postnatal weeks.

Abstract:Biological Research For Nursing, Ahead of Print. Objectives: Inflammation contributes to disparate neurodevelopmental outcomes between preterm and term-born infants. In this context, DNA methylation may contribute to inflammation by affecting gene expression. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nuclear factor-kappa-B-inhibitor alpha (NFKBIA) are important genes for targeted DNA methylation analysis. The aims of this study were to (1) identify associations between inflammatory factors and BDNF and NFKBIA methylation, and (2) identify associations between BDNF and NFKBIA methylation and early neurobehavior in preterm infants. Methods: In a longitudinal cohort study of preterm infants born 28–31 weeks gestational age, blood samples were collected weekly for the quantification of inflammatory factors. We extracted DNA from saliva samples and quantified methylation of six BDNF cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites and five NFKBIA CpG sites. Neurobehavior was assessed using the Neurobehavioral Assessment of the Preterm Infant. Results: Sixty-five infants were included in the analysis. In females, inflammatory factors were positively associated with BDNF methylation of most CpG sites. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist was negatively associated with NFKBIA methylation at two CpG sites. In males, interleukin-6 was negatively associated with BDNF and NFKBIA methylation at most CpG sites. In females, BDNF methylation at two sites was inversely associated with motor performance. In males, NFKBIA methylation at one site was inversely associated with motor performance. Conclusion: This study provides evidence for the relationship between inflammation and neurobehavior in preterm infants, working mechanistically through DNA methylation. The finding of a difference between males and females suggests that female infants are potentially more vulnerable to inflammation and warrants future study.

[Uveitis and spondyloarthritis: prevalence and relationship with joint disease].

Abstract:PURPOSE To study uveitis prevalence in the local population with spondyloarthritis and its temporal relationship with joint complaints. METHODS We reviewed seventy-seven charts of spondyloarthropathy patients from the rheumatology clinic of the "Hospital Universitário Evangélico de Curitiba" for spondyloarthritis class, patients' sex and age, occurrence of uveitis and its location and relationship between the first episode of uveitis and initial joint complaints. RESULTS Uveitis was found in 12 of 77 patients (15.6%) which was anterior in 83.3% of the cases, without preference for spondyloarthropathy class (p=0.72) and patients' sex (p=0.74). In patients with reactive arthritis, the mean time between uveitis appearance and joint complaints was 4.04 months and in ankylosing spondylitis 73 months (p=0.009). CONCLUSION Spondyloarthropathy patients have uveitis that is anterior in most of the cases and that appears earlier in reactive arthritis than in ankylosing spondylitis.
Sustained Neonatal Inflammation Is Associated with Poor Growth in Infants Born Very Preterm during the First Year of Life

Abstract:Objective: To determine whether a sustained neonatal systemic inflammatory response was associated with poor postnatal growth among infants born very preterm during the first year of life. Study design: We studied prospectively 192 infants born preterm (birth weight ≤1.5 kg and gestational age ≤31 weeks). Weight, length, and head circumference were measured at birth, term, 4, and 12 months of corrected age. Serial C-reactive protein and procalcitonin were measured at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of age and averaged for each infant. A sustained neonatal systemic inflammatory response was defined as an average C-reactive protein level greater than the median for the group. Analysis was undertaken with linear mixed models. Results: Decreases in mean z scores for weight, length, and head circumference were associated with the presence of a sustained neonatal systemic inflammatory response from birth to 12 months of corrected age (β [95% CI] = -0.282 [-0.306 to -0.258]; -1.899 [-2.028,-1.769]; -0.806 [-0.910, to -0.701], P < .001, respectively) in main effect models. This association remained significant after including interaction terms for bronchopulmonary dysplasia, neonatal sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (β [95% CI] = -0.393 [-0.520 to -0.265]; -2.128 [-2.754, -1.503]; -1.102 [-1.604, -0.600]; P < .001; respectively) in interaction models. Conclusions: A sustained neonatal systemic inflammatory response was associated with poor postnatal growth, particularly poor linear growth. Serial C-reactive protein and procalcitonin may be useful markers for identifying infants at risk for postnatal growth failure.
Prenatal exposure to maternal disadvantage-related inflammatory biomarkers: associations with neonatal white matter microstructure

Abstract:Prenatal exposure to heightened maternal inflammation has been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, including atypical brain maturation and psychiatric illness. In mothers experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage, immune activation can be a product of the chronic stress inherent to such environmental hardship. While growing preclinical and clinical evidence has shown links between altered neonatal brain development and increased inflammatory states in utero, the potential mechanism by which socioeconomic disadvantage differentially impacts neural-immune crosstalk remains unclear. In the current study, we investigated associations between socioeconomic disadvantage, gestational inflammation, and neonatal white matter microstructure in 320 mother-infant dyads over-sampled for poverty. We analyzed maternal serum levels of four cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α) over the course of pregnancy in relation to offspring white matter microstructure and socioeconomic disadvantage. Higher average maternal IL-6 was associated with very low socioeconomic status (SES; INR < 200% poverty line) and lower neonatal corticospinal fractional anisotropy (FA) and lower uncinate axial diffusivity (AD). No other cytokine was associated with SES. Higher average maternal IL-10 was associated with lower FA and higher radial diffusivity (RD) in corpus callosum and corticospinal tracts, higher optic radiation RD, lower uncinate AD, and lower FA in inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus and anterior limb of internal capsule tracts. SES moderated the relationship between average maternal TNF-α levels during gestation and neonatal white matter diffusivity. When these interactions were decomposed, the patterns indicated that this association was significant and positive among very low SES neonates, whereby TNF-α was inversely and significantly associated with inferior cingulum AD. By contrast, among the more advantaged neonates (lower-to-higher SES [INR ≥ 200% poverty line]), TNF-α was positively and significantly associated with superior cingulum AD. Taken together, these findings suggest that the relationship between prenatal cytokine exposure and white matter microstructure differs as a function of SES. These patterns are consistent with a scenario where gestational inflammation's effects on white matter development diverge depending on the availability of foundational resources in utero.

Electrochemical properties and myocyte interaction of carbon nanotube microelectrodes.

Abstract:Arrays of carbon nanotube (CNT) microelectrodes (nominal geometric surface areas 20-200 μm(2)) were fabricated by photolithography with chemical vapor deposition of randomly oriented CNTs. Raman spectroscopy showed strong peak intensities in both G and D bands (G/D = 0.86), indicative of significant disorder in the graphitic layers of the randomly oriented CNTs. The impedance spectra of gold and CNT microelectrodes were compared using equivalent circuit models. Compared to planar gold surfaces, pristine nanotubes lowered the overall electrode impedance at 1 kHz by 75%, while nanotubes treated in O(2) plasma reduced the impedance by 95%. Cyclic voltammetry in potassium ferricyanide showed potential peak separations of 133 and 198 mV for gold and carbon nanotube electrodes, respectively. The interaction of cultured cardiac myocytes with randomly oriented and vertically aligned CNTs was investigated by the sectioning of myocytes using focused-ion-beam milling. Vertically aligned nanotubes deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) were observed to penetrate the membrane of neonatal-rat ventricular myocytes, while randomly oriented CNTs remained external to the cells. These results demonstrated that CNT electrodes can be leveraged to reduce impedance and enhance biological interfaces for microelectrodes of subcellular size.

Abstract:Preterm newborns are exposed to several risk factors for developing brain injury. Clinical studies have suggested that the presence of intrauterine infection is a consistent risk factor for preterm birth and white matter injury. Animal models have confirmed these associations by identifying inflammatory cascades originating at the maternofetal interface that penetrate the fetal blood-brain barrier and result in brain injury. Acquired diseases of prematurity further potentiate the risk for cerebral injury. Systems biology approaches incorporating ante- and post-natal risk factors and analyzing omic and multiomic data using machine learning are promising methodologies for further elucidating biologic mechanisms of fetal and neonatal brain injury.

Abstract:Prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with inflammation in mid- to late-life, yet whether a pro-inflammatory phenotype is present at birth and the role of adverse birth outcomes in this pathway remains unclear. We utilized data on prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage at the individual- (i.e., mother's and father's education level, insurance type, marital status, and Women, Infants, and Children benefit receipt) and census-tract level as well as preterm (< 37 weeks gestation) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) (i.e., < 10th percentile of sex-specific birth weight for gestational age) birth status, and assessed inflammatory markers (i.e., C-reactive protein, serum amyloid p, haptoglobin, and α-2 macroglobulin) in archived neonatal bloodspots from a Michigan population-based cohort of 1000 neonates. Continuous latent variables measuring individual- and combined individual- and neighborhood-level prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage were constructed and latent profile analysis was used to create a categorical inflammatory response variable (high versus low) based on continuous inflammatory marker levels. Structural equation models were used to estimate the total and direct effect of prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage on the inflammatory response at birth as well as indirect effect via preterm or SGA birth (among term neonates only), adjusting for mother's age, race/ethnicity, body mass index, smoking status, comorbidities, and antibiotic use/infection as well as grandmother's education level. There was a statistically significant total effect of both individual- and combined individual- and neighborhood-level prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage on high inflammatory response among all neonates as well as among term neonates only, and a positive but not statistically significant direct effect in both groups. The indirect effects via preterm and SGA birth were both negative, but not statistically significant. Our findings suggest prenatal socioeconomic disadvantage contributes to elevated neonatal inflammatory response, but via pathways outside of these adverse birth outcomes.

Abstract:Objective: Our objective was to determine the association of early brain maturation with neurodevelopmental outcome in premature neonates. Methods: Neonates born between 24 and 32 weeks' gestation (April 2006 to August 2010) were prospectively studied with MRI early in life and again at term-equivalent age. Using diffusion tensor imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, fractional anisotropy (FA) (microstructure) and N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/choline (metabolism) were measured from the basal nuclei, white matter tracts, and superior white matter. Brain maturation is characterized by increasing FA and NAA/choline from early in life to term-equivalent age. In premature neonates, systemic illness and critical care therapies have been linked to abnormalities of these measures. Of the 177 neonates in this cohort, 5 died and 157 (91% of survivors) were assessed at 18 months' corrected age (adjusted for prematurity) using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III motor, cognitive, and language composite scores (mean = 100, SD = 15). Results: Among these 157 infants, white matter injury was seen in 48 (30%). Severe white matter injury, in 10 neonates (6%), was associated with a decrease in motor (-18 points; p < 0.001) and cognitive (-8 points; p = 0.085) scores. With greater severity of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, slower increases in FA and NAA/choline were observed in the basal nuclei and brain white matter regions as neonates matured to term-equivalent age, independent of the presence of white matter injury. Conclusions: In the preterm neonate, abnormal brain maturation evolves through the period of neonatal intensive care and is associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.
Predictive Role of Maternal Laboratory Parameters and Inflammatory Scores in Determining Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome in Newborns at Birth

Abstract:The incidence of Neonatal Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is a critical concern in neonatal care. This study aimed to identify maternal laboratory parameters predictive of SIRS in newborns, focusing on the establishment of diagnostic cutoffs and evaluating the predictive power of these biomarkers. This prospective cohort study was conducted from January 2023 to January 2024 across several regional hospitals specializing in neonatal care. It included 207 mother-newborn pairs, divided into groups based on the neonatal development of SIRS (66 cases) or its absence (141 controls). Key maternal parameters measured included inflammatory markers and liver enzymes, analyzed using standard biochemical methods. The study applied receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to establish optimal cutoff values and conducted multivariate logistic regression to determine hazard ratios (HRs) for SIRS prediction, with adjustments for potential confounders. The study identified significant ROC/AUC values for several biomarkers. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) demonstrated an AUC of 0.926, with a cutoff value of 3.64, achieving 81.8% sensitivity and 90.9% specificity (p < 0.001). The systemic immune–inflammation index (SII) showed an AUC of 0.819 and a cutoff of 769.12, with 75.8% sensitivity and 81.8% specificity (p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis highlighted that neonates with maternal SII values above this cutoff were three times more likely to develop SIRS (HR 3.09, 95% CI 2.21–4.17, p < 0.0001). Other notable biomarkers included dNLR and ALRI, with respective HRs of 1.88 (p = 0.018) and 1.75 (p = 0.032). These findings confirm the significant predictive value of specific maternal inflammatory markers for neonatal SIRS. These findings support the utility of these biomarkers in prenatal screening to identify neonates at increased risk of SIRS, potentially guiding preemptive clinical interventions.

Abstract:Abstract Background The early life period is suggested to be important in development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Studies in babies from mothers with IBD observed increased faecal calprotectin and changes in the microbial compartments compared to babies from healthy mothers1,2, which suggests that changes in early life might be associated with later disease development. Prospective studies of IBD risk following early life changes at the molecular level are sparse. We aimed to investigate if individuals with early onset (EO) IBD had changes in systemic inflammatory markers shortly after birth. Methods We measured the concentration of 9 cytokines in a cohort of 464 neonatal dried blood spot samples stored at the Danish National Biobank from individuals who later developed EO IBD (median age of diagnosis 11 years), as well as matched controls. Individuals who developed IBD were identified through the use of the Danish National Patient Registry. Uni- and multivariate logistic regression with adjustment for birth year, sex, and gestational age was conducted to assess the association between 6 of the inflammatory markers with later disease development (INF-γ, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6 and IL-17a). Further exploratory analyses were performed investigating risk of very early onset (VEO) IBD (onset from 0-5 years) in 88 cases and their matched controls. Results No significant association with EO IBD was observed for any of the cytokines in uni- and multivariate models when adjusting for multiple testing. In the exploratory analysis of VEO IBD, increased IL-4 was associated with significantly reduced risk of IBD (OR=0.992, p-value=0.023) and increased IL-17a was borderline-significantly associated with increased risk of IBD (OR=1.002, p-value=0.063) in a multivariate logistic model including all 6 cytokines. This association did not remain significant when adjusting for multiple testing, which may reflect limited power. Conclusion In our unique study of 464 dried blood spots from later IBD patients and controls, we could not find an association between measured cytokines and EO IBD. In contrast, patients with VEO IBD had decreased levels of IL-4 and increased levels of IL-17a. This sub-cohort was small, and significance disappeared after adjusting for multiple testing. Abstract:Background: The relationships between chorioamnionitis (CA) and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants remain controversial. The meta-analysis aims to evaluate the associations between CA and neurodevelopmental deficits in preterm infants. Methods: All studies exploring the associations between CA and neurodevelopmental deficits in preterm infants were retrieved from the following databases: PubMed, Embase, OVID, EBSCO, ProQuest, CDSR, and CENTRAL. The NOS was used to evaluate the quality of the studies, RevMan was adopted to analyze the data. Results: Twelve studies involving 4267 preterm infants were included. The ORs across studies was 0.95 (P = .77, I = 51%) for cognitive deficits, 1.09 (P = .44, I = 10%) for psychomotor deficits, 1.21 (P = .08, I = 25%) for language deficits, 2.34 (P = .02, I = 0%) for performance intelligence quotient impairment and 2.81 (P = .03, I = 0%) for verbal intelligence quotient impairment. Subgroup analyses based on the severity of cognitive deficits indicated that CA might be correlated with severe cognitive deficits (P = .01, I = 0%) but not with mild cognitive deficits (P = .40, I = 19%). In terms of the CA category, clinical CA may be related to overall psychomotor deficits (P = .01, I = 25%) and overall language deficits (P < .00001, I = 23%) other than histological CA. Conclusion: In preterm infants, CA might be a risk factor for performance and verbal intelligence quotient impairment and severe cognitive deficits, and clinical CA might be a risk factor for overall psychomotor and language deficits.
