Abstract:Objective To explore the quantitative index for evaluating the intermittent hypoxia training effects by analyzing the characteristic changes of electroencephalogram (EEG) complexity and saturation of blood oxygen (SaO2) of high performance fighter pilots. Methods Thirty-two pilots were selected as subjects and undertook a 25 min-training (simulated hypoxia at 3500 m-oxygen concentration 13.1%) with Type DY-84 hypoxia training device once a day for 15 d. Before and after training the subjects were put in simulated 7500 m hypoxia condition (oxygen concentration 7.1%,ventilation volume 15L/min) and their EEG, SaO2, number of red blood cell and hemoglobin level were recorded and analyzed by t-test. Results Training effects showed that the subjects' 7500m EE(G complexity was significantly decreased (P＜0.01), but SaO2 was significantly increased (P＜0.01).Number of red blood cell and hemoglobin level had no obvious change (P＞0.05).Conclusions The simulated 3500 m intermittent hypoxia training could improve pilot's hypoxia tolerance. EEG complexity and SaO2, which are measured under simulated 7500 m hypoxia condition,would be the quantitative indices for evaluating the effects of intermittent hypoxia training for pilot.The results application would be hopefully expanded to the population who work at high altitude or in anoxic environment.

Abstract:Athletes use hypoxic living and training to increase hemoglobin mass (Hbmass), but Hbmass declines rapidly upon return to sea level. We investigated whether intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) + continuous hypoxic training (CHT) after return to sea level maintained elevated Hbmass, and if changes in Hbmass were transferred to changes in maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) and exercise performance. Hbmass was measured in 58 endurance athletes before (PRE), after (POST1), and 30 days after (POST2) a 27 ± 4-day training camp in hypoxia (n = 44, HYP) or at sea level (n = 14, SL). After returning to sea level, 22 athletes included IHE (2 h rest) + CHT (1 h training) in their training every third day for 1 mo (HYPIHE + CHT), whereas the other 22 HYP athletes were not exposed to IHE or CHT (HYPSL). Hbmass increased from PRE to POST1 in both HYPIHE + CHT (4.4 ± 0.7%, means ± SE) and HYPSL (4.1 ± 0.6%) (both P < 0.001). Compared with PRE, Hbmass at POST2 remained 4.2 ± 0.8% higher in HYPIHE + CHT (P < 0.001) and 1.9 ± 0.5% higher in HYPSL (P = 0.023), indicating a significant difference between the groups (P = 0.002). In SL, no significant changes were observed in Hbmass with mean alterations between -0.5% and 0.4%. V̇o2max and time to exhaustion during an incremental treadmill test (n = 35) were elevated from PRE to POST2 only in HYPIHE + CHT (5.8 ± 1.2% and 5.4 ± 1.4%, respectively, both P < 0.001). IHE + CHT possesses the potential to mitigate the typical decline in Hbmass commonly observed during the initial weeks after return to sea level.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Sets of 2-h intermittent hypoxic exposure + 1-h continuous hypoxic training, every third day, possess the potential to mitigate the typical decline in Hbmass that is commonly observed during the initial weeks after return to sea level from an altitude camp. Inclusion of IHE + CHT in the training regimen was also accompanied by improvements in V̇o2max and exercise performance in most but not all Tier 3-Tier 5 level endurance athletes during the training season.
Endurance exercise under short‐duration intermittent hypoxia promotes endurance performance via improving muscle metabolic properties in mice

Abstract:Exercise training under intermittent hypoxia represents a beneficial strategy for increasing endurance performance via improving metabolic properties and capillary profiles in hind‐leg muscles and the heart. This study was designed to (1) investigate the effects of acute exercise under intermittent hypoxia on muscle mRNA and protein levels, and (2) clarify the mechanisms by which exercise under intermittent hypoxia improves endurance capacity. Experiment‐1: Male mice were subjected to either acute endurance exercise, exercise under hypoxia (14% O2), exercise under intermittent hypoxia (Int, three cycles of room air [10 min] and 14% O2 [15 min]). At 3 h after exercise under intermittent hypoxia, sirtuin‐6 mRNA levels and nuclear prolyl hydroxylases‐2 protein levels were significantly upregulated in white gastrocnemius muscle in the Int group. Experiment‐2: Mice were assigned to sedentary control (Sed), normoxic exercise‐trained (ET), hypoxic exercise‐trained (HYP) or exercise‐trained under intermittent hypoxia (INT) groups. Exercise capacity was significantly greater in the INT group than in the ET and HYP group. Activity levels of citrate synthase were significantly greater in the INT group than in the HYP group in soleus (SOL) and red gastrocnemius muscles. In SOL, nuclear N‐terminal PGC1α levels were considerably increased by the INT training (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09–1.79). The INT significantly increased pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activity levels in left ventricle (LV). Monocarboxylate transporter‐4 protein levels were significantly increased after the INT training in LV. Capillary‐to‐fiber ratio values were significantly increased in SOL and were substantially increased in LV (CI: 1.10–1.22) after the INT training. These results suggest that exercise training under intermittent hypoxia represents a beneficial strategy for increasing endurance performance via improving metabolic properties and capillary profiles in several hind‐leg muscles and the heart.
Adequacy of an Altitude Fitness Program (Living and Training) plus Intermittent Exposure to Hypoxia for Improving Hematological Biomarkers and Sports Performance of Elite Athletes: A Single-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:Athletes incorporate altitude training programs into their conventional training to improve their performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an 8-week altitude training program that was supplemented with intermittent hypoxic training (IHE) on the blood biomarkers, sports performance, and safety profiles of elite athletes. In a single-blind randomized clinical trial that followed the CONSORT recommendations, 24 male athletes were randomized to an IHE group (HA, n = 12) or an intermittent normoxia group (NA, n = 12). The IHE consisted of 5-min cycles of hypoxia−normoxia with an FIO2 of between 10−13% for 90 min every day for 8 weeks. Hematological (red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, hematocrit, reticulated hemoglobin, reticulocytes, and erythropoietin), immunological (leukocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes), and renal (urea, creatinine, glomerular filtrate, and total protein) biomarkers were assessed at the baseline (T1), day 28 (T2), and day 56 (T3). Sports performance was evaluated at T1 and T3 by measuring quadriceps strength and using three-time trials over the distances of 60, 400, and 1000 m on an athletics track. Statistically significant increases (p < 0.05) in erythropoietin, reticulocytes, hemoglobin, and reticulocyte hemoglobin were observed in the HA group at T3 with respect to T1 and the NA group. In addition, statistically significant improvements (p < 0.05) were achieved in all performance tests. No variations were observed in the immunological or renal biomarkers. The athletes who were living and training at 1065 m and were supplemented with IHE produced significant improvements in their hematological behavior and sports performance with optimal safety profiles.

Abstract:This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of exercise training on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) oxidative damage and 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase-1 (OGG1) expression in skeletal muscle of rats under continuous exposure to hypoxia. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 8): normoxia control group (NC), normoxia training group (NT), hypoxia control group (HC), and hypoxia training group (HT). The hypoxia-treated animals were housed in normobaric hypoxic tent containing 11.3% oxygen for consecutive 4 weeks. The exercise-trained animals were exercised on a motor-driven rodent treadmill at a speed of 15 m/min, 5% grade for 60 min/day, 5 days per week for 4 weeks. The results showed that, compared with NC group, hypoxia attenuated complex I, II, IV and ATP synthase activities of the electron transport chain, and the level of mitochondrial membrane potential in HC group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Moreover, hypoxia decreased mitochondrial OGG1, MnSOD, and GPx activities (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), whereas elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the level of 8-oxo-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in mtDNA (P < 0.01). Furthermore, hypoxia attenuated muscle and mitochondrial [NAD⁺]/ [NADH] ratio, and SIRT3 protein expression (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Compared with HC group, exercise training in hypoxia elevated complex I, II, IV and ATP synthase activities, and the level of mitochondrial membrane potential in HT group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Moreover, exercise training in hypoxia increased MnSOD and GPx activities and mitochondrial OGG1 level (P < 0.01), whereas decreased ROS generation and the level of 8-oxodG in mtDNA (P < 0.01). Furthermore, exercise training in hypoxia increased muscle and mitochondrial [NAD⁺]/[NADH] ratio, as well as SIRT3 protein expression (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). These findings suggest that exercise training in hypoxia can decrease hypoxia-induced mtDNA oxidative damage in the skeletal muscle through up-regulating exercise-induced mitochondrial OGG1 and antioxidant enzymes. Exercise training in hypoxia may improve hypoxia tolerance in skeletal muscle mitochondria via elevating [NAD⁺]/[NADH] ratio and SIRT3 expression.

Abstract:Background: The increasing popularity of hypoxic training as a training method to improve physical performance indicates the need to study the effects of this type of intervention on blood morphological and rheological indices, since the adaptive changes that follow such training mainly affect blood indices. In this study, the effects of a 4 weeks of intermittent hypoxic training on blood morphological and rheological indicators in physically active men were assessed. Methods: Forty-eight young, physically active men, participated in the study. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: two training groups and a control group without intervention (CTRL). Each group consisted of 16 participants. Training groups performed interval training (three times per week, 4 weeks, 12 workouts) under different conditions: in hypoxia (IHT; fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO 2 ) = 14.4%) or in normoxia (NT; FiO 2 = 20.9%). The control group performed only two workouts 4 weeks apart. Blood was taken during the first and last training session at rest, and 3 minutes after training. Results: After the last training session, there was a significant increase in mean corpuscular volume and a decrease in mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration measured at rest only in the IHT group. There was also a significant decrease in resting aggregation amplitude for the IHT and CTRL groups. There was no difference in change of post-exercise plasma volume between first and last training session. Conclusion: The applied intermittent interval training in conditions of normoxia and hypoxia had no significant impact on resting aggregation parameters. This suggest that training under hypoxic conditions does not cause adverse rheological changes.

Abstract:Objective Exercise can induce the release of various myokine such as Irisin, which promote browning of white fat, improve body metabolism, and loss weight. Appropriate hypoxic training plays a better role in weight loss than single exercise, but the effect of hypoxic training on muscle factors that promote browning of fat is rarely reported. Therefore, this study aims to observe different concentrations of hypoxia training on the PGC1α-Irisin-UCP1 signaling pathway in nutritional obese rats, and the role of weight loss. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=140) of 6 weeks old were divided into normal diet feeding group (group N, n=20) and high-fat diet feeding group (group HFD, n=120). The HFD rats became obese after 8 weeks’ feeding, and they were further divided randomly into 8 groups. Including sedentary group(group A), training group (group AE), 16.3% hypoxia exposure group (group B), 16.3% hypoxia training group (group BE), and 13.3% hypoxia exposure group (group C), 13.3% hypoxia training group (group CE), 11.3% hypoxia exposure group (group D), 11.3% hypoxia training group (group DE), group B, group C and group D Rats were exposed to oxygen in concentrations of 16.3%, 13.3%, and 11.3% for 12 h/d, respectively. Rats in group BE, CE, and DE were subjected to animal treadmill training during hypoxic exposure with a slope of 0°, 20 m /min, 40min/d, 5d/w. After 8 weeks of intervention, blood, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle were collected and tested. Results (1) In group AE, the body weight of obese rats decreased in a short time, but bounced back later. The body weight of rats in group CE and group DE decreased continuously. Hypoxia exposure and hypoxia training can inhibit the food intake of obese rats in varying degrees, and group CE has the most obvious effect. Hypoxia, endurance training and hypoxia training all reduced the percentage of visceral fat to body weight, group C is significantly lower than group B and D group (p < 0.05), the effect of hypoxia training is more obvious than single hypoxia or exercise, and the lower oxygen concentration the more significant effect. Group C、group CE、group D and group DE significantly decreased the concentration of LDL-C, increased the content of HDL-C in serum than other groups (p < 0.05).(2) The concentration of serum Irisin in group AE, group BE, group CE and group DE rats was significantly higher than that in group A (p < 0.05), and the highest level was found in group CE and DE. The insulin resistance of obese rats in group CE and group DE was significantly better than that in group AE (p < 0.05). (3) Three different concentrations of hypoxia exposure and hypoxia training can significantly increase the skeletal muscle PGC-1 α and FNDC5 gene expression, showing that the lower the concentration of oxygen, the higher the expression, 13.3% and 16.3% hypoxia training can significantly promote the gene transcription of UCP1. The contents of PGC-1 α and FNDC5 protein in skeletal muscle of obese rats in group C, AE and DE were significantly higher than those in group A (p < 0. 05). The expression of UCP1 protein in skeletal muscle of rats in group C, CE and DE was significantly higher than that in group A (p < 0. 05). Conclusions 13.3% and 11.3% oxygen concentration combined with endurance training can effectively reduce the body weight and visceral fat of nutritional obese rats, enhance serum HDL-C and decrease LDL-C levels and insulin resistance. 13.3% and 11.3% oxygen concentration training can significantly improve the level of serum Irisin, 11.3% oxygen concentration training can significantly promote the expression of PGC1α-Irisin-UCP1 gene and protein in skeletal muscle.

Effect of Prolonged Intermittent Hypoxia and Exercise Training on Glucose Tolerance and Muscle GLUT4 Protein Expression in Rats

Abstract:We compared the chronic effect of intermittent hypoxia and endurance training on the glucose tolerance and GLUT4 protein expression in rat skeletal muscle. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were matched for weight and assigned to one of the following four groups: control, endurance training, hypoxia, or hypoxia followed by endurance training. Hypoxic treatment consisted of breathing 14% O2 for 12 h/day under normobaric conditions, and the training protocol consisted of making animals swim 2 times for 3 h/day. At the end of the 3rd week, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed 16 h after treatments. At the end of the 4th week, GLUT4 protein, mRNA, and glycogen storage in skeletal muscle were determined. Endurance training significantly improved OGTT results. Glycogen content and GLUT4 protein expression in the plantaris and red gastrocnemius, but not in the soleus or white gastrocnemius muscles, were also elevated. Chronic intermittent hypoxia also improved OGTT results, but did not alter GLUT4 protein expression. Additionally, hypoxia followed by exercise training produced significant increases in GLUT4 protein and mRNA in a greater number of muscles compared to endurance training alone. Both exercise training and hypoxia significantly reduced body mass, and an additive effect of both treatments was found. In conclusion, chronic intermittent hypoxia improved glucose tolerance in the absence of increased GLUT4 protein expression. This treatment facilitated the exercise training effect on muscle GLUT4 expression and glycogen storage. These new findings open the possibility of utilizing intermittent hypoxia, with or without exercise training, for the prevention and clinical treatment of type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Traditional intermittent hypoxia training improves sport performance after short periods of exposure, but acute exposure to intermittent hypoxia leads to decreased training intensity and technical quality. The solution to overcome these negative effects may be to perform efforts in normoxia and the intervals between efforts in hypoxia, maintaining the quality of training and the benefits of hypoxia. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the acute physiological responses to hypoxia exposure during recovery between high intensity efforts. Materials and methods: Randomized, one-blind, placebo-controlled study. Sixteen men performed a graded exercise test to determine their maximal intensity and two sessions of high-intensity interval training. The training intervals could be in hypoxia (HRT), FIO2: 0.136 or normoxia (NRT), FIO2: 0.209. During the two-minute interval between the ten one-minute efforts, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), blood lactate ([La]), blood glucose ([Glu]) were constantly measured. Results: There were differences in HR (TRN = 120 ± 14 bpm; TRH = 129 ± 13 bpm, p < 0.01) and SpO2 (TRN = 96.9 ± 1.0%; TRH = 86.2 ± 3.5%, p < 0.01). No differences in [La] and [Glu] TRN (4.4 ± 1.7 mmol.l-1; 3.9 ± 0.5 mmol.l-1) and TRH (5.2 ± 2.0 mmol.l-1; 4.0 ± 0.8 mmol.l-1, p = 0.17). Conclusion: The possibility of including hypoxia only in the recovery intervals as an additional stimulus to the training, without decreasing the quality of the training, was evidenced. Abstract:Background: Intermittent hypoxia applied at rest or in combination with exercise promotes multiple beneficial adaptations with regard to performance and health in humans. It was hypothesized that replacing normoxia by moderate hyperoxia can increase the adaptive response to the intermittent hypoxic stimulus. Objective: Our objective was to systematically review the current state of the literature on the effects of chronic intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia (IHH) on performance- and health-related outcomes in humans. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science™, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (January 2000 to September 2021) using the following inclusion criteria: (1) original research articles involving humans, (2) investigation of the chronic effect of IHH, (3) inclusion of a control group being not exposed to IHH, and (4) articles published in peer-reviewed journals written in English. Results: Of 1085 articles initially found, eight studies were included. IHH was solely performed at rest in different populations including geriatric patients (n = 1), older patients with cardiovascular (n = 3) and metabolic disease (n = 2) or cognitive impairment (n = 1), and young athletes with overtraining syndrome (n = 1). The included studies confirmed the beneficial effects of chronic exposure to IHH, showing improvements in exercise tolerance, peak oxygen uptake, and global cognitive functions, as well as lowered blood glucose levels. A trend was discernible that chronic exposure to IHH can trigger a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The evidence of whether IHH exerts beneficial effects on blood lipid levels and haematological parameters is currently inconclusive. A meta-analysis was not possible because the reviewed studies had a considerable heterogeneity concerning the investigated populations and outcome parameters. Conclusion: Based on the published literature, it can be suggested that chronic exposure to IHH might be a promising non-pharmacological intervention strategy for improving peak oxygen consumption, exercise tolerance, and cognitive performance as well as reducing blood glucose levels, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in older patients with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases or cognitive impairment. However, further randomized controlled trials with adequate sample sizes are needed to confirm and extend the evidence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of training and tapering combined with inter-effort recovery hypoxia (IEH) on anaerobic capacity, as estimated by alternative maximum accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD ALT ) and time to exhaustion (TTE). Methods: Twenty-four amateur runners performed, for 5 weeks, 3 sessions per week of training consisted of ten 1-minute bouts at 120% (weeks 1–3) and 130% (weeks 4 and 5) of maximum velocity (V MAX ) obtained in graded exercise test, separated by a 2-minute interval in IEH (IEH, n = 11, F I O2 = 0.136) or normoxia (NOR, n = 13, fraction of inspired oxygen = 0.209). Before training, after training, and after 1 week of tapering, a graded exercise test and a maximal effort to exhaustion at 120% of V MAX were performed to determine TTE and MAOD ALT . The results were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models, and a clinical analysis was also realized by the smallest worthwhile change. Results: MAOD ALT increased only in IEH after training (0.8 ± 0.5 eq.lO 2 ) and tapering (0.8 ± 0.5 eq.lO 2 ), with time x group interaction. TTE increased for the pooled groups after taper (23 ± 11 seconds) and only for IEH alone (29 ± 16 seconds). Clinical analysis revealed a small size increase for NOR and a moderate size increase for IEH. Conclusions: Although the effects should be investigated in other populations, it can be concluded that IEH is a promising model for improving anaerobic performance and capacity. Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to explore the relationship between the dynamic changes in oxygen uptake ( V ̇O2 ) and deoxyhemoglobin (HHb) and peripheral fatigue in athletes during incremental exhaustive exercise under different environmental conditions, including high temperature and humidity environment, hypoxic environment, and normal conditions. Methods: 12 male modern pentathlon athletes were recruited and performed incremental exhaustive exercise in three different environments: normal condition (23°C, 45%RH, FiO 2 = 21.0%, CON), high temperature and humidity environment (35°C, 70%RH, FiO 2 = 21.0%, HOT), and hypoxic environment (23°C, 45%RH, FiO 2 = 15.6%, HYP). Gas metabolism data of the athletes were collected, and muscle oxygen saturation (SmO 2 ) and total hemoglobin content in the vastus lateralis muscles (VL) were measured to calculate the deoxyhemoglobin content. Linear and nonlinear function models were used to fit the characteristic parameters of V ̇O2 and HHb changes. Results: The results showed that compared to the CON, V ̇O2 , V ̇CO2 , and exercise time were decreased in the HOT and HYP ( p < 0.05). ΔEV ̇O2 and OUES were reduced in the HOT and HYP compared to the CON ( p < 0.05). The Gas exchange threshold in the CON corresponded to higher V ̇O2 than in the HYP and HOT ( p < 0.05). ΔEV ̇O2-1 was reduced in the HOT compared to the HYP ( p < 0.05). ΔE HHb was higher in the HOT compared to the CON ( p < 0.05). ΔE HHb-1 was increased in the HYP compared to the CON ( p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between ΔE HHb and corresponding V ̇O2⁡max in the HOT (r = −0.655, p < 0.05), and a negative correlation between ΔE HHb-1 and corresponding V ̇O2⁡max in the HYP (r = −0.606, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Incremental exhaustive exercise in hypoxic environment and high temperature and humidity environments inhibits gas exchange and oxygen supply to skeletal muscle tissue in athletes. For athletes, the accelerated deoxygenation response of skeletal muscles during incremental exhaustive exercise in high temperature and humidity environments, as well as the excessive deoxygenation response before BP of deoxyhemoglobin in hypoxic environment, may be contributing factors to peripheral fatigue under different environmental conditions.

Abstract:Pathological erythrocyte aggregation reduces capillary perfusion and oxygen transfer to tissue, which is determined by the negative surface charge on the erythrocyte membrane (intrinsic aggregability) and fibrinogen–erythrocyte interaction (extrinsic factor). Exercise-induced oxidative stress is important for rheological adaptation to training but may also cause erythrocyte senescence. This study clarifies the effects of hypoxic exercise training on intrinsic/extrinsic factors of aggregation. In total, 60 healthy sedentary males were randomly assigned to either hypoxic (HE; FIO2 = 0.15) or normoxic exercise training (NE; FIO2 = 0.21) groups for 30 min·d−1, 5 d·wk−1 for 6 weeks at 60 % of the maximum work rate or to a control group (CTL). A hypoxia exercise test (HET, FIO2 = 0.12) was performed before and after the intervention. Erythrocyte aggregation was assessed by ektacytometry, and fibrinogen binding affinity and senescence biomarkers were assessed by flow cytometry. An acute 12% oxygen HET significantly enhanced erythrocyte global aggregation through intrinsic aggregability. Resting aggregation is promoted by both intrinsic aggregability and fibrinogen binding probability and force after HE, whereas NE is mainly associated with ameliorated fibrinogen–erythrocyte interactions. The HET still facilitated global aggregation after HE because of the augmented fibrinogen-related factors, even though the intrinsic factor was suppressed. Additionally, HE further increased reticulocyte counts while reducing the expression of CD47 and CD147. Resting aggregability is promoted by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors after HE, whereas NE is mainly associated with an ameliorated affinity for fibrinogen. Although an accelerated turnover rate was observed, HE further led to erythrocyte senescence.
Effects of exercise training with intermittent hyperoxic intervention on endurance performance and muscle metabolic properties in male mice

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate how intermittent hyperoxic exposure (three cycles of 21% O2 [10 min] and 30% O2 [15 min]) affects exercise performance in mice. Three hours after the acute exposure, there was an observed increase in mRNA levels of phosphofructokinase (Bayes factor [BF] ≥ 10), mitochondrial transcription factor-A (BF ≥10), PPAR-α (BF ≥3), and PPAR-γ (BF ≥3) in the red gastrocnemius muscle (Gr). Four weeks of exercise training under intermittent (INT), but not continuous (HYP), hyperoxia significantly (BF ≥30) increased maximal exercise capacity compared to normoxic exercise-trained (ET) group. INT group exhibited significantly higher activity levels of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HAD) in Gr (BF = 7.9) compared to ET group. Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activity levels were significantly higher in INT group compared to ET group in white gastrocnemius, diaphragm, and left ventricle (BF ≥3). NT-PGC1α protein levels in Gr (BF = 7.7) and HAD activity levels in Gr (BF = 6.9) and soleus muscles (BF = 3.3) showed a significant positive correlation with maximal work values. These findings suggest that exercise training under intermittent hyperoxia is a beneficial strategy for enhancing endurance performance by improving fatty acid and pyruvic acid utilization.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: The cardiovascular system provides athletes with the proper conditions for blood circulation, ensuring the stability and normal metabolism of the body's internal environment during exercise. Objective: Investigate the effect of overload training on the hemoglobin of male taekwondo athletes. Methods: Twenty-one male taekwondo athletes (level 2 or higher) were selected and trained for four weeks, five days per week, with an initial load intensity of 60% of the maximum heart rate and a weekly intensity increase of 10%. Before training and on every weekend during training, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), reticulocyte count (Ret) were checked, RBC volume distribution width (RDW), hemoglobin content distribution width (HDW), mean reticulocyte volume (MCVr), mean reticulocyte hemoglobin concentration (CHCMr), serum iron (Fe) and ferritin (Fer). Results: After four weeks of increasing load training, athletes showed a progressive and significant decrease in Hb (P<0.01), manifested as exercise-induced hypohemoglobin, and MCV, MCH, MCHC, CHCMr, HDW, and serum ferritin were significantly or extremely decreased(P<0.) 05, P<0.01); RDW increased significantly (P 0.05). Correlation analysis found that hemoglobin concentration had the highest correlation with MCHC and CHCMr. Conclusion: Four-week incremental load training can induce exercise-induced hypohemoglobin in male taekwondo athletes, its changes being most correlated with MCHC and CHCMr, but without significant correlation with serum Fe, RDW, HDW, and MCV. Abstract:The purpose of our study was to assess the influence of a single high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) bout in normoxia on plasma volume (PV) and consequent cycling performance in normobaric hypoxia (0.15 F i O 2 , simulating ~2,500 m). Eight males (VO 2peak : 48.8 ± 3.4 mL/kg/min, 24.0 ± 1.6 years) completed a hypoxic 15 km cycling time trial (TT), followed by a crossover intervention of either HIIE (8x4 min cycling bouts at 85% of VO 2peak ) or CON (matched kJ production from HIIE at 50% of VO 2peak ). 48 hours post intervention, an identical TT was performed. Cardiovascular parameters were measured via impedance cardiography during each TT. Changes in PV was measured 24 and 48 hours post HIIE and CON. HIIE increased PV at 24 (4.1 ± 3.9%, P = 0.031) and 48 (6.7 ± 1.7, P = 0.006) hours post, while no difference was observed following the CON (1.3 ± 1.1% and 0.3 ± 2.8%). The higher PV led to an increased stroke volume ( P = 0.03) and cardiac output (P = 0.02) during the hypoxic TT, while heart rate was not changed ( P = 0.49). We observed no changes in time to completion (−0.63 ± 0.57 min, P = 0.054) and power output (7.37 ± 7.98 W, P = 0.078) between TTs. In the absence of environmental stress, a single bout of HIIE was an effective strategy to increase PV and reduce the cardiovascular strain during a cycling TT at moderate simulated altitude but did not impact hypoxic exercise performance. Abstract:Background: Both hypoxia exposure and physical exercise before ascending have been proved to promote high altitude acclimatization, whether the combination of these two methods can bring about a better effect remains uncertain. Therefore, we designed this study to evaluate the effect of hypoxic preacclimatization combining intermittent hypoxia exposure (IHE) and physical exercise on the tolerance to acute hypoxia and screen the optimal preacclimatization scheme among the lowlanders. Methods: A total of 120 Han Chinese young men were enrolled and randomly assigned into four groups, including the control group and three experimental groups with hypoxic preacclimatization of 5-day rest, 5-day exercise, and 3-day exercise in a hypobaric chamber, respectively. Main physical parameters for hypoxia acclimatization, AMS incidence, physical and mental capacity were measured for each participant in the hypobaric chamber simulated to the altitude of 4500 m in the effect evaluation stage. The effect was compared between different schemes. Results: During the effect evaluation stage, SpO 2 of the 5-day rest group and 5-day exercise group was significantly higher than that of the control group ( p = 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively). The participants with 5-day rest had significantly lower HR than the controls ( p = 0.018). No significant differences of AMS incidence were found among the four groups, while the proportion of AMS headache symptom (moderate and severe vs. mild) was significantly lower in the 3-day exercise group than that in the control group ( p = 0.002). The 5-day exercise group had significantly higher VO 2 max, than the other three groups ( p = 0.033, p < 0.001, and p = 0.023, respectively). The 5-day exercise group also had significantly higher digital symbol and pursuit aiming test scores, while shorter color selection reaction time than the control group ( p = 0.005, p = 0.005, and p = 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Hypoxic preacclimatization combining IHE with physical exercise appears to be efficient in promoting the tolerance to acute hypoxia. Hypoxia duration and physical exercise of moderate intensity are helpful for improvement of SpO 2 and HR, relief of AMS headache symptoms, and enhancement of mental and physical operation capacity.
