Abstract:Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic and serious mental disorder with a high mortality rate. At present, there is a lack of objective, cost-effective and widely disseminated diagnosis tools to address this mental health crisis globally. Clinical electroencephalogram (EEG) is a noninvasive technique to measure brain activity with high temporal resolution, and accumulating evidence demonstrates that clinical EEG is capable of capturing abnormal SCZ neuropathology. Although EEG-based automated diagnostic tools have obtained impressive performance on individual datasets, the transportability of potential EEG biomarkers in cross-site real-world application is still an open question. To address the challenges of small sample sizes and population heterogeneity, we develop an advanced interpretable deep learning model using multimodal clinical EEG features and demographic information as inputs to graph neural networks, and further propose different transfer learning strategies to adapt to different clinical scenarios. Taking the disease discrimination of health control (HC) and SCZ with 1030 participants as a use case, our model is trained on a small clinical dataset (N = 188, Chinese) and enhanced using a large-scale public dataset (N = 508, American) of adult participants. Cross-site validation from an independent dataset of adult participants (N = 157, Chinese) produced stable performance, with AUCs of 0.793–0.852 and accuracies of 0.786–0.858 for different SCZ prevalence, respectively. In addition, cross-site validation from another dataset of adolescent boys (N = 84, Russian) yielded an AUC of 0.702 and an accuracy of 0.690. Moreover, feature visualization further revealed that the ranking of feature importance varied significantly among different datasets, and that EEG theta and alpha band power appeared to be the most significant and translational biomarkers of SCZ pathology. Overall, our promising results demonstrate the feasibility of SCZ discrimination using EEG biomarkers in multiple clinical settings.

Abstract:Schizophrenia (ScZ) is a devastating mental disorder of the human brain that causes a serious impact of emotional inclinations, quality of personal and social life and healthcare systems. In recent years, deep learning methods with connectivity analysis only very recently focused into fMRI data. To explore this kind of research into electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, this paper investigates the identification of ScZ EEG signals using dynamic functional connectivity analysis and deep learning methods. A time-frequency domain functional connectivity analysis through cross mutual information algorithm is proposed to extract the features in alpha band (8–12 Hz) of each subject. A 3D convolutional neural network technique was applied to classify the ScZ subjects and health control (HC) subjects. The LMSU public ScZ EEG dataset is employed to evaluate the proposed method, and a 97.74 ± 1.15% accuracy, 96.91 ± 2.76% sensitivity and 98.53 ± 1.97% specificity results were achieved in this study. In addition, we also found not only the default mode network region but also the connectivity between temporal lobe and posterior temporal lobe in both right and left side have significant difference between the ScZ and HC subjects.

Abstract:Deep learning techniques have been applied to electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, with promising applications in the field of psychiatry. Schizophrenia is one of the most disabling neuropsychiatric disorders, often characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations. Auditory processing impairments have been studied using EEG-derived event-related potentials and have been associated with clinical symptoms and cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. Due to consistent changes in the amplitude of ERP components, such as the auditory N100, some have been proposed as biomarkers of schizophrenia. In this paper, we examine altered patterns in electrical brain activity during auditory processing and their potential to discriminate schizophrenia and healthy subjects. Using deep convolutional neural networks, we propose an architecture to perform the classification based on multi-channels auditory-related EEG single-trials, recorded during a passive listening task. We analyzed the effect of the number of electrodes used, as well as the laterality and distribution of the electrical activity over the scalp. Results show that the proposed model is able to classify schizophrenia and healthy subjects with an average accuracy of 78% using only 5 midline channels (Fz, FCz, Cz, CPz, and Pz). The present study shows the potential of deep learning methods in the study of impaired auditory processing in schizophrenia with implications for diagnosis. The proposed design can provide a base model for future developments in schizophrenia research.

Abstract:Background The search for a method that utilizes biomarkers to identify patients with schizophrenia from healthy individuals has occupied researchers for decades. However, no single indicator can be employed to achieve the good in clinical practice. We aim to develop a comprehensive machine learning pipeline based on neurocognitive and electrophysiological combined features for distinguishing schizophrenia patients from healthy people. Methods In the present study, 69 patients with schizophrenia and 50 healthy controls participated. Neurocognitive (contains seven specific domains of cognition) and electrophysiological [prepulse inhibition, electroencephalography (EEG) power spectrum, detrended fluctuation analysis, and fractal dimension (FD)] features were collected, all these features were taken together to generate the identification models of schizophrenia by applying logistics, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting algorithm. The classification capabilities of these models were also evaluated. Results Both the neurocognitive and electrophysiological feature sets showed a good classification effect with the highest accuracy greater than 85% and AUC greater than 90%. Specifically, the performances of the combined neurocognitive and electrophysiological feature sets achieved the highest accuracy of 93.28% and AUC of 97.91%. The extreme gradient boosting algorithm as a whole presented more stably and precisely in classification efficiency. Conclusion The highest classification accuracy of 93.28% by combination of neurocognitive and electrophysiological features shows that both measurements are appropriate indicators to be used in discriminating schizophrenia patients and healthy individuals. Also, among three algorithms, extreme gradient boosting had better classified performances than logistics and random forest algorithms.

Unveiling Functional Biomarkers in Schizophrenia: Insights from Region of Interest Analysis Using Machine Learning

Abstract:Background: Schizophrenia is a complex and disabling mental disorder that represents one of the most important challenges for neuroimaging research. There were many attempts to understand these basic mechanisms behind the disorder, yet we know very little. By employing machine learning techniques with age-matched samples from the auditory oddball task using multi-site functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, this study aims to address these challenges. Methods: The study employed a three-stage model to gain a better understanding of the neurobiology underlying schizophrenia and techniques that could be applied for diagnosis. At first, we constructed four-level hierarchical sets from each fMRI volume of 34 schizophrenia patients (SZ) and healthy controls (HC) individually in terms of hemisphere, gyrus, lobes, and Brodmann areas. Second, we employed statistical methods, namely, t-tests and Pearson's correlation, to assess the group differences in cortical activation. Finally, we assessed the predictive power of the brain regions for machine learning algorithms using K-nearest Neighbor (KNN), Naive Bayes, Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). Results: Our investigation depicts promising results, obtaining an accuracy of up to 84% when applying Pearson's correlation-selected features at lobes and Brodmann region level (81% for Gyrus), as well as Hemispheres involving different stages. Thus, the results of our study were consistent with previous studies that have revealed some functional abnormalities in several brain regions. We also discovered the involvement of other brain regions which were never sufficiently studied in previous literature, such as the posterior lobe (posterior cerebellum), Pyramis, and Brodmann Area 34. Conclusions: We present a unique and comprehensive approach to investigating the neurological basis of schizophrenia in this study. By bridging the gap between neuroimaging and computable analysis, we aim to improve diagnostic accuracy in patients with schizophrenia and identify potential prognostic markers for disease progression.

Abstract:Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder associated with a wide spectrum of cognitive and neurophysiological dysfunctions. Early diagnosis is still difficult and based on the manifestation of the disorder. In this study, we have evaluated whether machine learning techniques can help in the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and proposed a processing pipeline in order to obtain machine learning classifiers of schizophrenia based on resting state EEG data. We have computed well-known linear and non-linear measures on sliding windows of the EEG data, selected those measures which better differentiate between patients and healthy controls, and combined them through principal component analysis. These components were finally used as features in five standard machine learning algorithms: k-nearest neighbours (kNN), logistic regression (LR), decision trees (DT), random forest (RF) and support vector machines (SVM). Complexity measures showed a high level of ability in differentiating schizophrenia patients from healthy controls. These differences between groups were mainly located in a delimited zone of the right brain hemisphere, corresponding to the opercular area and the temporal pole. Based on the area under the curve parameter in receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, we obtained high classification power in almost all of the machine learning algorithms tested: SVM (0.89), RF (0.87), LR (0.86), kNN (0.86) and DT (0.68). Our results suggest that the proposed processing pipeline on resting state EEG data is able to easily compute and select a set of features which allow standard machine learning algorithms to perform very efficiently in differentiating schizophrenia patients from healthy subjects.

Abstract:Resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), clinically stable first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), healthy controls (HC) suggest alterations in neural oscillatory activity. However, few studies directly compare these anomalies among each types. Therefore, this study investigated whether these electrophysiological characteristics differentiate clinical populations from one another, and from non-psychiatric controls. To address this question, resting EEG power and coherence were assessed in 40 clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), 40 first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), and 40 healthy controls (HC). These findings suggest that resting EEG can be a sensitive measure for differentiating between clinical <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://disorders.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> paper proposes a novel data-driven supervised learning method to obtain identification of the patients mental status in schizophrenia research. According to Marchenko-Pastur Law, the distribution of the eigenvalues of EEG data is divided into signal subspace and noise subspace. A test statistic named LES that embodies the characteristics of all eigenvalues is adopted. different classifier and different feature(LES test function) are selected for experiments, we have shown that using von Neumann Entropy as LES test function combine with SVM classifier could obtain the best average classification accuracy during three classification among HC, FES and CHR of Schizophrenia group with EEG signal. It is worth noting that the result of LES feature extraction with the highest classification accuracy is around 90% in two classification(HC compare with FES) and around 70% in three classification. Where the classification accuracy higher than 70% could be used to assist clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:Review of past experimental and theoretical research leads to a statement of our present knowledge of cochlear mechanics. In particular, an attempt is made at a clear definition of the nature of cochlear waves. With the help of prominent examples, it is shown that neither experiments nor theory have ever been entirely correct but have supplemented and corrected each other mutually in steps of successive approximation. As the approximation has become closer, the steps have become smaller, but the process is still going on. During the Bekesy era, the weight of research was on the fundamental properties of cochlear waves; now, the emphasis is on numerical values of such parameters as wavelength, damping, and nonlinearity. At the end of the presentation, some effects of the cochlear wave pattern on auditory neural excitation are discussed. Especially, it is shown how displacement and velocity responses can be separated by means of appropriate stimulus patterns.

Abstract:Schizophrenia (ScZ) is a chronic mental disorder affecting the function of the brain, which causes emotional, social, and cognitive problems. This paper explored the functional brain network and deep learning methods to detect ScZ using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Functional brain network analysis was proposed and implemented using a multivariate autoregressive model and coherence connectivity algorithm. The three machine learning techniques and 3D-convolutional neural network (CNN) models were applied to classify the ScZ patients and health control subjects, and then the public LMSU database was utilized to assess the performance. The proposed 3D-CNN method achieved the performance of a 98.47 ± 1.47 % in accuracy, 99.26 ± 1.07 % in sensitivity, and 97.23 ± 3.76 % in specificity. Moreover, in addition to the default mode network region, the temporal and posterior temporal lobes of both right and left hemispheres were found as the significant difference areas in ScZ brain network analysis.

Abstract:Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a brain disorder where different people experience different symptoms, such as hallucination, delusion, flat-talk, disorganized thinking, etc. In the long term, this can cause severe effects and diminish life expectancy by more than ten years. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis of SCZ is prevalent, and modalities like structural magnetic resonance imaging, functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging, and electroencephalogram assist in witnessing the brain abnormalities of the patients. Moreover, for accurate diagnosis of SCZ, researchers have used machine learning (ML) algorithms for the past decade to distinguish the brain patterns of healthy and SCZ brains using MRI and fMRI images. This paper seeks to acquaint SCZ researchers with ML and to discuss its recent applications to the field of SCZ study. This paper comprehensively reviews state-of-the-art techniques such as ML classifiers, artificial neural network, deep learning models, methodological fundamentals, and applications with previous studies. The motivation of this paper is to benefit from finding the research gaps that may lead to the development of a new model for accurate SCZ diagnosis. The paper concludes with the research finding, followed by the future scope that directly contributes to new research directions.

Abstract:Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with both structural and functional brain abnormalities. In the past few years, there has been growing interest in the application of machine learning techniques to neuroimaging data for the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of this disorder. However, the vast majority of studies published so far have used either structural or functional neuroimaging data, without accounting for the multimodal nature of the disorder. Structural MRI and resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from a total of 295 patients with schizophrenia and 452 healthy controls at five research centers. We extracted features from the data including gray matter volume, white matter volume, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation, regional homogeneity and two connectome-wide based metrics: structural covariance matrices and functional connectivity matrices. A support vector machine classifier was trained on each dataset separately to distinguish the subjects at individual level using each of the single feature as well as their combination, and 10-fold cross-validation was used to assess the performance of the model. Functional data allow higher accuracy of classification than structural data (mean 82.75% vs. 75.84%). Within each modality, the combination of images and matrices improves performance, resulting in mean accuracies of 81.63% for structural data and 87.59% for functional data. The use of all combined structural and functional measures allows the highest accuracy of classification (90.83%). We conclude that combining multimodal measures within a single model is a promising direction for developing biologically informed diagnostic tools in schizophrenia.

Abstract:Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects an estimated 21 million people worldwide. The literature establishes that electroencephalography (EEG) is a well-implemented means of studying and diagnosing mental disorders. However, it is known that speech and language provide unique and essential information about human thought. Semantic and emotional content, semantic coherence, syntactic structure, and complexity can thus be combined in a machine learning process to detect schizophrenia. Several studies show that early identification is crucial to prevent the onset of illness or mitigate possible complications. Therefore, it is necessary to identify disease-specific biomarkers for an early diagnosis support system. This work contributes to improving our knowledge about schizophrenia and the features that can identify this mental illness via speech and EEG. The emotional state is a specific characteristic of schizophrenia that can be identified with speech emotion analysis. The most used features of speech found in the literature review are fundamental frequency (F0), intensity/loudness (I), frequency formants (F1, F2, and F3), Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC’s), the duration of pauses and sentences (SD), and the duration of silence between words. Combining at least two feature categories achieved high accuracy in the schizophrenia classification. Prosodic and spectral or temporal features achieved the highest accuracy. The work with higher accuracy used the prosodic and spectral features QEVA, SDVV, and SSDL, which were derived from the F0 and spectrogram. The emotional state can be identified with most of the features previously mentioned (F0, I, F1, F2, F3, MFCCs, and SD), linear prediction cepstral coefficients (LPCC), linear spectral features (LSF), and the pause rate. Using the event-related potentials (ERP), the most promissory features found in the literature are mismatch negativity (MMN), P2, P3, P50, N1, and N2. The EEG features with higher accuracy in schizophrenia classification subjects are the nonlinear features, such as Cx, HFD, and Lya.

Abstract:At present, lots of studies have tried to apply machine learning to different electroencephalography (EEG) measures for diagnosing schizophrenia (SZ) patients. However, most EEG measures previously used are either a univariate measure or a single type of brain connectivity, which may not fully capture the abnormal brain changes of SZ patients. In this paper, event-related potentials were collected from 45 SZ patients and 30 healthy controls (HCs) during a learning task, and then a combination of partial directed coherence (PDC) effective and phase lag index (PLI) functional connectivity were used as features to train a support vector machine classifier with leave-one-out cross-validation for classification of SZ from HCs. Our results indicated that an excellent classification performance (accuracy = 95.16%, specificity = 94.44%, and sensitivity = 96.15%) was obtained when the combination of functional and effective connectivity features was used, and the corresponding optimal feature number was 15, which included 12 PDC and three PLI connectivity features. The selected effective connectivity features were mainly located between the frontal/temporal/central and visual/parietal lobes, and the selected functional connectivity features were mainly located between the frontal/temporal and visual cortexes of the right hemisphere. In addition, most of the selected effective connectivity abnormally enhanced in SZ patients compared with HCs, whereas all the selected functional connectivity features decreased in SZ patients. The above results showed that our proposed method has great potential to become a tool for the auxiliary diagnosis of SZ.

Classification of Low and High Schizotypy Levels via Evaluation of Brain Connectivity

Abstract:Schizotypy is a latent cluster of personality traits that denote a vulnerability for schizophrenia or a type of spectrum disorder. The aim of the study is to investigate parametric effective brain connectivity features for classifying high versus low schizotypy (LS) status. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are recorded from 13 high schizotypy (HS) and 11 LS participants during an emotional auditory odd-ball task. The brain connectivity signals for machine learning are taken after the settlement of event-related potentials. A multivariate autoregressive (MVAR)-based connectivity measure is estimated from the EEG signals using the directed transfer functions (DTFs) method. The values of DTF power in five standard frequency bands are used as features. The support vector machines (SVMs) revealed significant differences between HS and LS. The accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of the results using SVM are as high as 89.21%, 90.3%, and 88.2%, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the effective brain connectivity in prefrontal/parietal and prefrontal/frontal brain regions considerably changes according to schizotypal status. These findings prove that the brain connectivity indices offer valuable biomarkers for detecting schizotypal personality. Further monitoring of the changes in DTF following the diagnosis of schizotypy may lead to the early identification of schizophrenia and other spectrum disorders.

Abstract:This paper discusses some preliminary findings from the Infrastructure Enhancement Project conducted by the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD), which focuses on state oral health programs and their roles in addressing core public health functions and essential public health services. Findings from analysis of state data since 2000, surveys, reports, and key informant interviews substantiate the value of the following: a) state oral health surveillance; b) oral health improvement plans; c) collaborations and coalitions; d) evidence-based practices and evaluation; e) diversified funding; f) placement and authority of the programs and directors; and g) competencies versus staffing formulas. No single program model fits all the unique populations and political and economic variations among states. Each state is encouraged to use the many tools, resources, and best practices/lessons learned available through ASTDD, federal agencies, and national organizations to design effective and sustainable programs.

Abstract:Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental disorder characterised by disruptions in cognition, behaviour, and perception, significantly impacting an individual's life. Traditional SZ diagnosis methods are labour-intensive and prone to errors. This study presents an innovative automated approach for detecting SZ acquired through electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor signals, aiming to improve diagnostic efficiency and accuracy. We utilised Fast Independent Component Analysis to remove artefacts from raw EEG sensor data. A novel Automated Log Energy-based Empirical Wavelet Reconstruction (ALEEWR) technique was introduced to reconstruct decomposed modes based on their variability, ensuring effective extraction of meaningful EEG signatures. Cepstral-based features—cepstral activity, cepstral mobility, and cepstral complexity—were used to capture the power, rate of change, and irregularity of the cepstrum of preprocessed EEG signals. ANOVA-based feature selection was applied to refine these features before classification using the K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) algorithm. Our approach achieved an exceptional accuracy of 99.4%, significantly surpassing previous methods. The proposed ALEEWR and cepstral analysis demonstrated high precision, sensitivity, and specificity in the automated diagnosis of schizophrenia. This study introduces a highly accurate and efficient method for SZ detection using EEG technology. The proposed techniques offer significant improvements in diagnostic accuracy, with potential implications for enhancing SZ diagnosis and patient care through automated systems.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, a mix of traditional and modern approaches have been proposed to detect brain abnormalities using bio‐signal/bio‐image‐assisted methods. In hospitals, most of the initial/scheduled assessments consider the bio‐signal‐based appraisal, due to its non‐invasive nature and low cost. Further, brain bio‐signal scans can be recorded using a single/multi‐channel electrode setup, which is further evaluated by an experienced doctor, as well as computer software, to identify the nature and severity of abnormality. In this paper, we describe the development of a system for computer supported detection ( CSD ) of schizophrenia using the electroencephalogram ( EEG ) signal collected with a 19‐channel electrode array. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that interferes with the way an individual thinks and behaves. It is characterised by psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions, negative symptoms such as decreased motivation or a lack of interest in daily activities and cognitive symptoms such challenges in processing information to make informed decisions or staying focused. This research has utilized 1142 EEGs (516 normal and 626 schizophrenia) with a frame length of 25 s (6250 samples) for investigation. The work initially converts the EEG signals to images using a spectrogram. Local configuration pattern features were extracted from the images thereafter, and 10‐fold validation technique was used wherein Student's t‐ test and z ‐score standardization were computed per fold. The highest accuracy of 97.20% was achieved with the K‐nearest neighbour ( KNN) classifier. The results obtained confirm that the KNN classifier is helpful in the rapid detection of schizophrenia. This work is one of the first studies to extract local configuration pattern features from spectrogram images, yielding a high accuracy of 97.20%, with reduced computational complexity.

Abstract:Abstract Intro Evidence from neuroimaging has implicated abnormal cerebral cortical patterns in schizophrenia. Application of machine learning techniques is required for identifying structural signature reflecting neurobiological substrates of schizophrenia at the individual level. We aimed to detect and develop a method for potential marker to identify schizophrenia via the features of cerebral cortex using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Method In this study, cortical features were measured, including volumetric (cortical thickness, surface area, and gray matter volume) and geometric (mean curvature, metric distortion, and sulcal depth) features. Patients with first-episode schizophrenia (n = 52) and healthy controls (n = 66) were included from the Department of Psychiatry at Xijing Hospital. Multivariate computation was used to examine the abnormalities of cortical features in schizophrenia. Features were selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method. The diagnostic capacity of multi-dimensional neuroanatomical patterns-based classification was evaluated based on diagnostic tests. Results Mean curvature (left insula and left inferior frontal gyrus), cortical thickness (left fusiform gyrus), and metric distortion (left cuneus and right superior temporal gyrus) revealed both group differences and diagnostic capacity. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.88, and the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of were 94%, 82%, and 88%, respectively. Confirming these findings, similar results were observed in the independent validation. There was a positive association between index score derived from the multi-dimensional patterns and the severity of symptoms ( r = 0.40, P < .01) for patients. Discussion Our findings demonstrate a view of cortical differences with capacity to discriminate between patients with schizophrenia and healthy population. Structural neuroimaging-based measurements hold great promise of paving the road for their clinical utility in schizophrenia.

Abstract:Purpose: The neurobiological heterogeneity present in schizophrenia remains poorly understood. This likely contributes to the limited success of existing treatments and the observed variability in treatment responses. Our objective was to employ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to improve the classification of schizophrenia and its subtypes. Method: We utilized a public dataset provided by the UCLA Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Research, containing structural MRI and resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) data. We integrated all individuals within the dataset diagnosed with schizophrenia (N=50); along with age- and gender-matched healthy individuals (N=50). We extracted volumetrics of 66 subcortical and thickness of 72 cortical regions. Additionally, we obtained four graph-based measures for 116 intracranial regions from rsfMRI data including degree, betweenness centrality, participation coefficient, and local efficiency. Employing conventional ML methods, we sought to distinguish the patients with schizophrenia from healthy individuals. Furthermore, we applied the methods for discriminating subtypes of schizophrenia. To streamline the feature set, various feature selection techniques were applied. Furthermore, a validation phase involved employing the model on a dataset domestically acquired using the same imaging assessments (N=13). Finally, we explored the correlation between neuroimaging features and behavioral assessments. Finding: The classification accuracy reached as high as 79% in distinguishing schizophrenia patients from healthy in the UCLA dataset. This result was achieved by the k-nearest neighbor algorithm, utilizing 12 brain neuroimaging features, selected by the feature selection method of Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (MRMR). The model demonstrated high effectiveness (85% accuracy) in estimating the disease vs. control label for a new dataset acquired domestically. Using a linear SVM on 62 features obtained from MRMR, patients with schizophrenic subtypes were classified with an accuracy of 64%. The highest spearman correlation coefficient between the neuroimaging features and behavioral assessments was observed between degree of the postcentral gyrus and mean reaction time in the verbal capacity task (r = 0.49, p = 0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the utility of MRI and ML algorithms in enhancing the diagnostic process for schizophrenia. Furthermore, these methods hold promise for detecting both brain-related abnormalities and cognitive impairments associated with this disorder.

Abstract:<p>Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by a series of cognitive impairments, including automatic processing impairment of basic auditory information, indexed by mismatch negativity (MMN). Existing studies mainly focus on MMN induced by deviant of single acoustic features, and relatively few studies have focused on complex acoustic stimuli, especially speech-induced MMN. Many cognitive impairments in SZ are related to speech function. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the reduction of phonetic MMN in SZ as a potential biomarker and its relationship with illness course and functional outcomes. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded from 32 SZ and 32 healthy controls (HC) in a double oddball paradigm, with /da/ as the standard stimulus and /ba/ and /du/ as the deviant stimuli. MMN was computed for vowel and consonant deviants separately. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Rating Scale (PANSS). Illness duration and illness relapse were acquired by combining clinical interviews and electronic medical records. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF). Compared with HC, SZ showed lower amplitudes of phonetic MMN, especially for vowel deviants. In addition, the MMN amplitude of the vowel deviant was significantly correlated with illness duration, illness relapse, and functional outcomes among patients with SZ. These findings indicate that the pre-attentive automatic phonetic processing of SZ was impaired for both consonants and vowels, while the vowel processing deficit may be the key speech processing deficit in SZ, which could depict the illness course and predict the functional outcomes.</p>
