Abstract:PURPOSE:Rear-end crashes attribute to a large portion of total crashes in China, which lead to many casualties and property damage, especially when involving commercial vehicles. This paper aims to investigate the critical factors for occupant injury severity in the specific rear-end crash type involving trucks as the front vehicle (FV).METHODS:This paper investigated crashes occurred from 2011 to 2013 in Beijing area, China and selected 100 qualified cases i.e., rear-end crashes involving trucks as the FV. The crash data were supplemented with interviews from police officers and vehicle inspection. A binary logistic regression model was used to build the relationship between occupant injury severity and corresponding affecting factors. Moreover, a multinomial logistic model was used to predict the likelihood of fatal or severe injury or no injury in a rear-end crash.RESULTS:The results provided insights on the characteristics of driver, vehicle and environment, and the corresponding influences on the likelihood of a rear-end crash. The binary logistic model showed that drivers' age, weight difference between vehicles, visibility condition and lane number of road significantly increased the likelihood for severe injury of rear-end crash. The multinomial logistic model and the average direct pseudo-elasticity of variables showed that night time, weekdays, drivers from other provinces and passenger vehicles as rear vehicles significantly increased the likelihood of rear drivers being fatal.CONCLUSION:All the abovementioned significant factors should be improved, such as the conditions of lighting and the layout of lanes on roads. Two of the most common driver factors are drivers' age and drivers' original residence. Young drivers and outsiders have a higher injury severity. Therefore it is imperative to enhance the safety education and management on the young drivers who steer heavy duty truck from other cities to Beijing on weekdays.
Analysis of Factors Contributing to the Injury Severity of Overloaded-Truck-Related Crashes on Mountainous Highways in China

Abstract:Overloaded transport can certainly improve transportation efficiency and reduce operating costs. Nevertheless, several negative consequences are associated with this illegal activity, including road subsidence, bridge collapse, and serious casualties caused by accidents. Given the complexity and variability of mountainous highways, this study examines 1862 overloaded-truck-related crashes that happened in Yunnan Province, China, and attempts to analyze the key factors contributing to the injury severity. This is the first time that the injury severity has been studied from the perspective of crashes involving overloaded trucks, and meanwhile in a scenario of mountainous highways. For in-depth analysis, three models are developed, including a binary logit model, a random parameter logit model, and a classification and regression tree, but the results show that the random parameter logit model outperforms the other two. In the best-performing model, a total of fifteen variables are found to be significant at the 99% confidence level, including random variables such as freeway, broadside hitting, impaired braking performance, spring, and evening. In regards to the fixed variables, it is likely that the single curve, rollover, autumn, and winter variables will increase the probability of fatalities, whereas the provincial highway, country road, urban road, cement, wet, and head-on variables will decrease the likelihood of death. Our findings are useful for industry-related departments in formulating and implementing corresponding countermeasures, such as strengthening the inspection of commercial trucks, increasing the penalties for overloaded trucks, and installing certain protective equipment and facilities on crash-prone sections.

Differences in Factors Affecting Various Crash Types with High Numbers of Fatalities and Injuries in China

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Road traffic crashes that involve very high numbers of fatalities and injuries arouse public concern wherever they occur. In China, there are two categories of such crashes: a crash that results in 10-30 fatalities, 50-100 serious injuries or a total cost of 50-100 million RMB ($US8-16m) is a "serious road traffic crash" (SRTC), while a crash that is even more severe or costly is a "particularly serious road traffic crash" (PSRTC). The aim of this study is to identify the main factors affecting different types of these crashes (single-vehicle, head-on, rear-end and side impact) with the ultimate goal of informing prevention activities and policies.METHODS: Detailed descriptions of the SRTCs and PSRTCs that occurred from 2007 to 2014 were collected from the database "In-depth Investigation and Analysis System for Major Road Traffic Crashes" (IIASMRTC), which is maintained by the Traffic Management Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security of China (TMRI). 18 main risk factors, which were categorized into four areas (participant, vehicle, road and environment-related) were chosen as potential independent variables for the multinomial logistic regression analysis. Comparisons were made among the single-vehicle, head-on, rear-end and side impact crashes in terms of factors affecting crash occurrence.FINDINGS: Five risk factors were significant for the six multinomial logistic regression models, which were location, vertical alignment, roadside safety rating, driver distraction and overloading of cargo. It was indicated that intersections were more likely to have side impact SRTCs and PSRTCs, especially with poor visibility at night. Overloaded freight vehicles were more likely to be involved in a rear-end crash than other freight vehicles. Driver distraction is an important risk factor for head-on crashes, while vertical alignment and roadside safety rating are positively associated with single-vehicle crashes.CONCLUSION: Based on the findings, promising measures were proposed to prevent each type of SRTC and PSRTC, which governmental or regulatory agencies could employ to plan strategies to reduce SRTCs and PSRTCs and support lifesaving policies.

Abstract:In order to manage and reduce a specific risk, its quantitative analysis is necessary. The key objective of this study is to illustrate the prevalence of multi-factors in fatal crashes involving heavy trucks and to quantify the crash risk under the influence of multi-factors. Data from a recent, nationally representative sample of fatal crashes was investigated to identify the risk factors contributing to crash causations and a novel risk index was obtained to develop a criterion for crash risk quantification. Then, based on the mutual information theory, the mutual dependence between risk factors was calculated to quantify the crash risk under different risk factor combinations. The results reveal that most heavy-truck fatal crashes are the result of co-occurring multi-factors rather than a single factor, and are mainly caused by simultaneous occurrence of two or three contributing factors. Moreover, crash risk increases with the increase of the number of risk factors influencing the driver. Furthermore, multi-factor interaction between certain risk factors, such as environmental and vehicular factors, makes incremental contribution to the crash risk by further increasing the crash probability. Specifically, when driver's aberrant behaviors (errors and/or violations) are exposed to both environmental and vehicular factors, driver's likelihood of being involved in a fatal crash increases significantly. This suggests that in addition to the number of risk factors, the crash risk also depends on the multi-factor interactions between different risk factors. Therefore, the effects of individual risk factors should be controlled at the outset to prevent the incremental effects of multi-factors on crash risk, in turn enabling risk minimization..
An analysis of single-vehicle truck crashes on rural curved segments accounting for unobserved heterogeneity

Abstract:Introduction: Medium to large truck crashes, particularly on rural curved roadways, lead to a disproportionately higher number of fatalities and serious injuries relative to other passenger vehicles over time. The intent of this study is to identify and quantify the factors affecting injury severity outcomes for single-vehicle truck crashes on rural curved segments in North Carolina. The crash data were extracted from the Highway Safety Information System (HSIS) from 2010 to 2017. Method: This study applied a mixed logit with heterogeneity in means and variances approach to model driver injury severity. The approach accounts for possible unobserved heterogeneity in the data resulting from driver, roadway, vehicle, traffic characteristics and/or environmental conditions. Results' Conclusion: The model results indicate that there is a complex interaction of driver characteristics such as demographics (male and female drivers, age below 30 years, and age between 50 to 65 years), driver physical condition (normal driving condition and sleepy while driving), driver actions (unsafe speed, overcorrection, and careless driving), restraint usage (lap-shoulder belt usage and unbelted), roadway and traffic characteristics (undivided road, medium right shoulder width, graded surface, low and medium speed limit, low traffic volume), environmental conditions (rainy condition), vehicle characteristics (tractor-trailer and semi-trailer), and crashes characteristics (fixed object crashes and rollover crashes). In addition, this study compared the contributing factor leading to driver injury severity for curved and straight rural segments. Practical Applications: The results clearly indicate the importance of driving behavior, such as, exceeding the speed limit and careless driving along the high-speed curved segments, need to be prioritized for the trucking agency. Similarly, the suggested countermeasures for roadway design and maintenance agency encompass warning signs and advisory speed limit, roadside barrier with chevrons, and edge line rumble strips are important concerning curved segments in rural highways.

Abstract:Identification of the significant factors of traffic crashes has been a primary concern of the transportation safety research community for many years. A fatal-injury crash is a comprehensive result influenced by multiple variables involved at the moment of the crash scenario, the main idea of this paper is to explore the process of significant factors identification from a multi-objective optimization (MOP) standpoint. It proposes a data-driven model which combines the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) with the Neural Network (NN) architecture to efficiently search for optimal solutions. This paper also defines the index of Factor Significance (Fs) for quantitative evaluation of the significance of each factor. Based on a set of three year data of crash records collected from three main interstate highways in the Washington State, the proposed method reveals that the top five significant factors for a better Fatal-injury crash identification are 1) Driver Conduct, 2) Vehicle Action, 3) Roadway Surface Condition, 4) Driver Restraint and 5) Driver Age. The most sensitive factors from a spatiotemporal perspective are the Hour of Day, Most Severe Sobriety, and Roadway Characteristics. The method and results in this paper provide new insights into the injury pattern of highway crashes and may be used to improve the understanding of, prevention of, and other enforcement efforts related to injury crashes in the future.
Risk factors affecting fatal bus accident severity: Their impact on different types of bus drivers

Abstract:While the bus is generally considered to be a relatively safe means of transportation, the property losses and casualties caused by bus accidents, especially fatal ones, are far from negligible. The reasons for a driver to incur fatalities are different in each case, and it is essential to discover the underlying risk factors of bus fatality severity for different types of drivers in order to improve bus safety. The current study investigates the underlying risk factors of fatal bus accident severity to different types of drivers in the U.S. by estimating an ordered logistic model. Data for the analysis are retrieved from the Buses Involved in Fatal Accidents (BIFA) database from the USA for the years 2006-2010. Accidents are divided into three levels by counting their equivalent fatalities, and the drivers are classified into three clusters by the K-means cluster analysis. The analysis shows that some risk factors have the same impact on different types of drivers, they are: (a) season; (b) day of week; (c) time period; (d) number of vehicles involved; (e) land use; (f) manner of collision; (g) speed limit; (h) snow or ice surface condition; (i) school bus; (j) bus type and seating capacity; (k) driver's age; (l) driver's gender; (m) risky behaviors; and (n) restraint system. Results also show that some risk factors only have impact on the "young and elder drivers with history of traffic violations", they are: (a) section type; (b) number of lanes per direction; (c) roadway profile; (d) wet road surface; and (e) cyclist-bus accident. Notably, history of traffic violations has different impact on different types of bus drivers.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. Truck freight has high importance to the national economy as it handles more cargo than other types of freight transportation. To improve the safety of commercial vehicles, several studies have focused on determining factors leading to crashes. Parametric models have been extensively employed to explain crash causal factors for heavy trucks. Unlike studies in the past, a comprehensive framework was proposed in this study to compare crash underlying factors utilizing several statistical approaches. The structural equation modeling approach was used to assess latent factors affecting the crash severity of large trucks. In addition, ordinary (binary) logistic and random parameter models were employed to assess the direct effect of the observed data, and the heterogeneity in parameter means was also estimated. Three crash categories were investigated: single-truck crashes, multi-vehicle truck crashes, and total truck crashes. A total of five years of crash data from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. The results showed that multiple observed variables were factored to measure crash severity. Direct and indirect effects were identified, in which challenging roadway conditions had an indirect effect on crash severity for single-truck crashes. Random parameter logit models indicated that roadway geometry and adverse weather conditions were among the significant contributing factors increasing crash severity for trucks. This study recommends that improving the situational awareness of truck drivers, providing more frequent rest stops, updating variable speed limit algorithms, and integrating roadway geometry information into connected vehicle applications in Wyoming could be considered to assist stakeholders in promoting safety on rural interstate corridors.

Abstract:Fatal traffic crashes involving commercial vehicles exhibit distinct characteristics and mechanisms compared to general traffic crashes, influenced by numerous factors that impact the resulting fatalities. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of significant commercial vehicle crashes in China over a nine‐year period (2014–2022), exploring an extensive range of factors including driver behavior, road conditions, vehicle characteristics, and environmental aspects. Utilizing a hierarchical Bayesian ordered probit model that incorporates both categorical and random effects, the research offers nuanced insights into the probabilistic outcomes of fatal traffic crashes. The model's hierarchical structure enables the exploration of unobserved heterogeneities at individual and group levels. Key findings indicate that driver's behaviors like speeding and overloading significantly escalate the likelihood of fatal traffic crashes, particularly those resulting in 10 or more fatalities. The study also highlights the role of road class in fatal crashes, with primary and secondary roads being associated with higher risks of more severe fatal crashes. The analysis extends to the impact of vehicle type, noting a distinct increase in the probabilities of fatal crashes with passenger vehicles, while freight vehicles exhibit a more complex relationship with fatal crashes severity. The insights from this study underscore the urgent need for enhanced enforcement of speed limit and vehicle weight regulations, particularly through the deployment of advanced monitoring technologies on highways frequented by commercial vehicles, and targeted infrastructure improvements on primary and secondary roads. This approach offers a novel analytical framework for evaluating commercial traffic crashes, assisting policymakers in devising targeted safety interventions to reduce the incidence of commercial vehicle crashes.

Identifying the Factors Contributing to the Severity of Truck-Involved Crashes in Shanghai River-Crossing Tunnel

Abstract:The impact that trucks have on crash severity has long been a concern in crash analysis literature. Furthermore, if a truck crash happens in a tunnel, this would result in more serious casualties due to closure and the complexity of the tunnel. However, no studies have been reported to analyze traffic crashes that happened in tunnels and develop crash databases and statistical models to explore the influence of contributing factors on tunnel truck crashes. This paper summarizes a study that aims to examine the impact of risk factors such as driver factor, environmental factor, vehicle factor, and tunnel factor on truck crashes injury propensity based on tunnel crashes data obtained from Shanghai, China. An ordered logit model was developed to analyze injury crashes and property damage only crashes. The driver factor, environmental factor, vehicle factor, and tunnel factor were explored to identify the relationship between these factors and crashes and the severity of crashes. Results show that increased injury severity is associated with driver factors, such as male drivers, older drivers, fatigue driving, drunkenness, safety belt used improperly, and unfamiliarity with vehicles. Late night (00:00-06:59) and afternoon rushing hours (16:30-18:59), weekdays, snow or icy road conditions, combination truck, overload, and single vehicle were also found to significantly increase the probability of injury severity. In addition, tunnel factors including two lanes, high speed limits (≥80 km/h), zone 3, extra-long tunnels (over 3000 m) are also significantly associated with a higher risk of severe injury. So, the gender, age of driver, mid-night to dawn and afternoon peak hours, weekdays, snowy or icy road conditions, the interior zone of a tunnel, the combination truck, overloaded trucks, and extra-long tunnels are associated with higher crash severity. Identification of these contributing factors for tunnel truck crashes can provide valuable information to help with new and improved tunnel safety control measures.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the efficacy of paracervical block (PCB) used in conjunction with conscious sedation during egg collection. The dosage of lignocaine used in various studies ranges from 50 mg to 200 mg. There are, however, no studies evaluating the efficacy of different doses of local anaesthetic agents used in PCB. In this prospective, double-blind and placebo-controlled study, 150 women undergoing egg collection in their first IVF cycle were randomized to receive 200 mg and 150 mg lignocaine in PCB. No differences were seen in the demographic data, the ovarian responses, the duration of egg collection and the number of follicles punctured. The fertilization, implantation and pregnancy rates were similar when either 150 mg or 200 mg lignocaine was employed. The median pain levels during vaginal punctures were 14.0 (2.5th-97.5th centiles: 0-75.4) and 14.0 (2.5th-97.5th centiles: 0-86.5) in patients receiving 200 mg and 150 mg lignocaine respectively, whereas the corresponding median abdominal pain levels were 14.0 (2.5th-97.5th centiles: 0-85.6) and 14.0 (2.5th-97.5th centiles: 0-99.1). These pain levels during egg collection were not significantly different between the two groups. The use of 200 mg lignocaine in PCB is not justified, even in the absence of toxic effects.
A Cluster-Based Approach for Analysis of Injury Severity in Interstate Crashes Involving Large Trucks

Abstract:The significance of large trucks for the expansion and well-being of the economy is a well-established fact. However, crashes involving large trucks significantly threaten the overall safety on the roads. Moreover, a significant proportion of fatal crashes involving large trucks occurs on interstate roadways in the United States. However, not many studies have focused on the heterogeneous effects of the contributory factors on injury outcomes of interstate crashes involving large trucks. The current study explores the application of a k-prototypes clustering-based mixed logit model to identify and analyze the heterogeneous effects of contributory factors on injury outcomes in different scenarios of interstate crashes involving large trucks. Data from six years of crashes involving large trucks that occurred on interstate roadways in the state of Pennsylvania, US, were used in this study. The list of contributory factors included the following: drivers' demographics and behaviors; crash characteristics; vehicle-related factors; location and roadway attributes; and environmental factors. The results indicated that some of the contributory factors were significant for all scenarios of interstate crashes involving large trucks. However, the magnitude of those factors' effects varied across scenarios. Moreover, some of the contributory factors were exclusive to certain scenarios of interstate crashes involving large trucks. Lastly, the identification of random parameters in the cluster-based models indicated that a cluster-based mixed logit model is a more effective approach for accurately estimating the effects of contributory factors on injury outcomes in large-truck interstate crashes. The empirical findings of this study can be used to develop more robust traffic laws and safety measures to reduce the frequency and severity of injury in different scenarios of interstate crashes involving large trucks.

An empirical analysis of driver injury severities in work-zone and non-work-zone crashes involving single-vehicle large trucks

Abstract:Florida ranks among the states with the highest rates of work-zone crashes involving large trucks. With significant emphasis in Florida's strategic highway safety plan, understanding work-zone crashes involving large trucks and resulting injury severities is critically important. This study investigated the contributing factors influencing the driver injury severity of single-large-truck crashes in work zones, benchmarked against non-work zones in Florida. Using work-zone and non-work-zone crash data from 2011 to 2019 (inclusive), driver-injury severities in single-large trucks crashes were studied using random parameters logit models that allow for possible heterogeneity in the means and variances of parameter estimates. The available data included a wide variety of factors known to influence driver injury severity, including spatial and temporal; vehicle and traffic; roadway, harmful events, and driver characteristics. The model estimates produced fundamental shift in unobserved heterogeneity for work-zone and non-work-zone crashes involving single large trucks. More importantly, the likelihood of large truck drivers' injury severity is about fourteen-times higher on rural and six-times higher on urban interstate highways and 1.3 times lower with 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit for large trucks inside work zones relative to non-work zones. The model results also indicate that the likelihood of severe driver injury is higher for heavy truck (more than 26000 pounds), a lane-shift work-zone configuration, and careless driving in work-zone crashes involving single large trucks. The model findings add valuable insights to have profound effects in the safety performance of large trucks and in-vehicle safety technologies, such as, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, for careful driving along the work-zone segments with lower speed, leading to Automated Driving Systems. These measures include various policy-related safety countermeasures including revisiting traffic control plan for lane-shift on highways specifically for large trucks and developing training modules for Florida registered truck drivers.

Abstract:Many studies have analyzed the road characteristics that affect the severity of truck crashes. However, most of these studies have only examined road alignment or grade separately, without considering their combined effects. The purpose of this article is to address this gap in the literature. Our study uses truck crash data from 2015 to 2019 on freeways in the Yunnan Province of China, where the severity levels of the crashes were determined by taking into account economic loss and the number of injuries and fatalities. Our study develops three models to examine the severity of truck crashes: a multinomial logit model, a mixed logit model, and a generalized ordered logit model. The findings suggest that the mixed logit model, which can suffer from unobserved heterogeneity, is more suitable because of the higher pseudo-R-squared (ρ2) value and lower Akaike Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion. The estimation results show that the combination of curve and slope significantly increases the severity of truck crashes compared to curves and slopes alone. In addition, risk factors such as crash type, vehicle type, surface condition, time of day, pavement structure, and guardrails have a significant impact on the severity of truck crashes on mountainous freeways. Based on these findings, we developed policy recommendations for reducing the severity of multi-truck collisions on mountainous highways and improving transport sustainability. Abstract:Freight transportation, dominated by trucks, is an integral part of trade and production in the USA. Given the prevalence of large truck crashes, a comprehensive investigation is imperative to ascertain the underlying causes. This study analyzed 2017–2021 Texas crash data to identify factors impacting large truck crash rates and injury severity and to locate high-risk zones for severe incidents. Logistic regression models and bivariate analysis were utilized to assess the impacts of various crash-related variables individually and collectively. Heat maps and hotspot analysis were employed to pinpoint areas with a high frequency of both minor and severe large truck crashes. The findings of the investigation highlighted night-time no-passing zones and marked lanes as primary road traffic control, highway or FM roads, a higher posted road speed limit, dark lighting conditions, male and older drivers, and curved road alignment as prominent contributing factors to large truck crashes. Furthermore, in cases where the large truck driver was determined not to be at fault, the likelihood of severe collisions significantly increased. The study's findings urge policymakers to prioritize infrastructure improvements like dual left-turn lanes and extended exit ramps while advocating for wider adoption of safety technologies like lane departure warnings and autonomous emergency braking. Additionally, public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing distracted driving and drunk driving, particularly among truck drivers, could significantly reduce crashes. By implementing these targeted solutions, we can create safer roads for everyone in Texas.

Abstract:Due to increases in truck traffic, truck traffic safety has become an unavoidable societal issue in Korea. Truck traffic accidents were responsible for 24% of all traffic deaths in 2019, and the fatality rate was significantly higher than that of other forms of traffic. This study analyzes not only the driver and environmental factors, but also the traffic condition factors which are considered to contribute to the severity of truck traffic accidents, and presents practical truck safety solutions based on the findings. This study examines the fatal and serious injury truck traffic accidents in Incheon, which has large logistics facilities and the highest fatality rate (3.3) in Korea’s capital area. According to the regression analysis results, ‘Nighttime’, ‘Vehicle-single’, ‘Vehicle to Pedestrian’, ‘Lane violation’, and ‘Signal violation’ contribute to the severity of truck traffic accidents. Furthermore, truck traffic accidents in the logistics influencing area are more likely to be serious than in the non-influencing area. In terms of the traffic condition factors, the number of lanes, the maximum speed, and the number of road property-changing nodes were significant. The results of this study will provide useful data for establishing traffic safety policies in urban areas.

Abstract:Accident analysis and prevention are helpful to ensure the sustainable development of transportation. The aim of this research was to investigate the factors associated with the severity of low-visibility-related rural single-vehicle crashes. Firstly, a latent class clustering model was implemented to partition the whole-dataset into a relatively homogeneous sub-dataset. Then, a spatial random parameters logit model was established for each dataset to capture unobserved heterogeneity and spatial correlation. Analysis was conducted based on the crash data (2014–2019) from 110 two-lane road segments. The results show that the proposed method is a superior crash severity modeling approach to accommodate the unobserved heterogeneity and spatial correlation. Three variables—seatbelt not used, motorcycle, and collision with fixed object—have a stable positive correlation with crash severity. Motorcycle leads to a 12.8%, 23.8%, and 12.6% increase in the risk of serious crashes in the whole-dataset, cluster 3, and cluster 4, respectively. In the whole-dataset, cluster 2, and cluster 3, the risk of serious crashes caused by seatbelt not used increased by 5.5%, 0.1%, and 30.6%, respectively, and caused by collision with fixed object increased by 33.2%, 1.2%, and 13.2%, respectively. The results can provide valuable information for engineers and policy makers to develop targeted measures.

Abstract:Objectives: To quantify the association of driver's age with the risk of being injured, dying, and experiencing injuries of different severity when involved in a motor vehicle crash. Methods: Data from the Wisconsin Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) from 2002 to 2004 were used to study 602,964 drivers of a car or truck who were involved in a motor vehicle crash. Odds ratios (OR) or relative risk ratios (RRR) and their 95 percent confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for age groups, in relation to the outcomes of injury, fatality, and injury severity using logistic regression models, which controlled for sex, alcohol use, urban/rural location, seat belt use, ejection, airbag deployment, vehicle type, and highway class. Results: Increasing age was strongly associated the risk of dying or experiencing severe injuries for drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes with the greatest risk in drivers 85 years and older. Compared to drivers aged 25-44, drivers 85 years and older had the highest risks for moderate injury (ISS = 9-15; RRR = 5.44, 95% CI: 3.97-7.47), severe injury (ISS = 16-74; (RRR = 4.32, 95% CI: 2.73-6.84), and fatality (OR = 10.93, 95% CI: 7.76-15.38). In contrast, drivers 85 years and older had no increase in risk for minor injury (ISS = 1-8; OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.84-1.05). Conclusions: The oldest drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes had the highest risk for severe injury and fatality. In light of the increasing number of the oldest drivers and their poor outcomes from severe trauma, substantial morbidity can be expected to occur in the oldest drivers. Evidence-based measures to reduce the risks to older drivers should continue to be developed, evaluated, and implemented.
