A Rapid Element Pressure Field Simulation Method for Transcranial Phase Correction in Focused Ultrasound Therapy

Abstract:Transcranial focused ultrasound ablation has emerged as a promising technique for treating neurological disorders. The clinical system exclusively employed the ray tracing method to compute phase aberrations induced by the human skull, taking into account computational time constraints. However, this method compromises slightly on accuracy compared to simulation-based methods. This study evaluates a fast simulation method that simulates the time-harmonic pressure field within the region of interest for effective phase correction. Experimental validation was carried out using a 512-element, 670 kHz hemispherical transducer for fourex vivoskulls. The ray tracing method achieved a restoration ratio of 64.81% ± 4.33% of acoustic intensity normalized to hydrophone measurements. In comparison, the rapid simulation method demonstrated improved results with a restoration ratio of 73.10% ± 7.46%, albeit slightly lower than the full-wave simulation which achieved a restoration ratio of 75.87% ± 5.40%. The rapid simulation methods exhibited computational times that were less than five minutes for parallel computation with 8 threads. The incident angle was calculated, and a maximum difference of 6.8 degrees was found when the fixed position of the skull was changed. Meanwhile, the restoration ratio of acoustic intensity was validated to be above 70% for different target positions away from the geometrical focus of the transducer. The favorable balance between time consumption and correction accuracy makes this method valuable for clinical treatment applications.

Abstract:In transcranial penetration, ultrasound undergoes refraction, diffraction, multi-reflection, and mode conversion. These factors lead to phase aberration and waveform distortion, which impede the realization of transcranial ultrasonic imaging and therapy. Ray tracing has been used to correct the phase aberration and is computationally more efficient than traditional full-wave simulation. However, when ray tracing has been used for transcranial investigation, it has generally been on the premise that the skull medium is homogeneous. To find suitable homogeneity that balances computational speed and accuracy, the present work investigates how the focus deviates after phase-aberration compensation with ray tracing using time-reversal theory. The waveforms are synthetized with ray tracing for phase aberration, by which the properties of the skull bone are simplified for refraction calculation as those of either (i) the cortical bone or (ii) the mean of the entire skull bone, and the focusing accuracy is evaluated for each hypothesis. The propagation of ultrasound for transcranial focusing is simulated with the elastic model using the k-space pseudospectral method. Unlike the fluid model, the elastic model does not omit shear waves in the skull bones, and the influence of that omission is investigated, with the fluid model resulting in a focal deflection of 0.5 mm. The focusing deviations are huge when the properties of the skull bone are idealized with ray tracing as those of the mean of the entire skull bone. The focusing accuracy improves when the properties of the skull bone are idealized as those of the cortical bone. The results reveal minimal deviation (8.6, 3.9, and 3.2% in the three Cartesian coordinates) in the focal region and suggest that transcranial focusing deflections are caused mostly by ultrasonic refraction on the surface of the skull bone. A heterogeneous skull bone causes wave bending but minimal focusing deflection. The proposed simplification of a homogeneous skull bone is more accurate for transcranial ultrasonic path estimation and offers promising applications in transcranial ultrasonic focusing and imaging.
An efficient and accurate parallel hybrid acoustic signal correction method for transcranial ultrasound

Abstract:Phased-control focused ultrasound transducers provide a new and noninvasive treatment method for brain disease. However, improving the accuracy of phase correction and reducing the calculation time during treatment have always been contradictory constraints. In this paper, a hybrid acoustic signal correction (HASC) method combined with k-Wave stage and holography stage was introduced for phase correction and simulation of transcranial focused ultrasound. The k-Wave stage is mainly used to calculate the sound field in a heterogeneous medium (skull), which divides the sound field calculation process into paths that can be calculated in parallel, and the transcranial correction phase can also be obtained during the calculation. The holography stage is sufficient to simulate the acoustic field in the homogenous intracranial medium after ultrasound transmitting through the skull. The agreement of the k-space corrected pseudospectral time domain method and HASC method was assessed by statistical methods: linear regression between the two methods provided a slope of 0.9735, intercept of 0.0078, and <i>R</i> <sup>2</sup> of 0.9982. The Bland–Altman method provided a bias of 0.0015 and 95% limits of agreement 0.065 apart. We demonstrated that the difference in sound intensity at the focal point corrected by HASC and time reversal phase correction method was 0.2% and 0.5% in the results of simulation and experiment, respectively. Not only that, the phase calculation time by the HASC phase correction method can be reduced to 11 min on a multi GPU array, which has clinical potential for ultrasound treatment of brain therapy.

Abstract:Objective. Magnetic resonance guided transcranial focused ultrasound holds great promises for treating neurological disorders. This technique relies on skull aberration correction which requires computed tomography (CT) scans of the skull of the patients. Recently, ultra-short time-echo (UTE) magnetic resonance (MR) sequences have unleashed the MRI potential to reveal internal bone structures. In this study, we measure the efficacy of transcranial aberration correction using UTE images. Approach. We compare the efficacy of transcranial aberration correction using UTE scans to CT based correction on four skulls and two targets using a clinical device (Exablate Neuro, Insightec, Israel). We also evaluate the performance of a custom ray tracing algorithm using both UTE and CT estimates of acoustic properties and compare these against the performance of the manufacturer's proprietary aberration correction software. Main results. UTE estimated skull maps in Hounsfield units (HU) had a mean absolute error of 242 ± 20 HU (n=4). The UTE skull maps were sufficiently accurate to improve pressure at the target (no correction: 0.44 ± 0.10, UTE correction: 0.79 ± 0.05, manufacturer CT: 0.80 ± 0.05), pressure confinement ratios (no correction: 0.45 ± 0.10, UTE correction: 0.80 ± 0.05, manufacturer CT: 0.81 ± 0.05), and targeting error (no correction: 1.06 ± 0.42 mm, UTE correction 0.30 ± 0.23 mm, manufacturer CT: 0.32 ± 0.22) (n=8 for all values). When using CT, our ray tracing algorithm performed slightly better than UTE based correction with pressure at the target (UTE: 0.79 ± 0.05, CT: 0.84 ± 0.04), pressure confinement ratios (UTE: 0.80 ± 0.05, CT: 0.84 ± 0.04), and targeting error (UTE: 0.30 ± 0.23 mm, CT: 0.17 ± 0.15). Significance. These 3D transcranial measurements suggest that UTE sequences could replace CT scans in the case of MR guided focused ultrasound with minimal reduction in performance which will avoid ionizing radiation exposure to the patients and reduce procedure time and cost.

Abstract:Ultrasonic imaging provides a non-invasive way to diagnose brain disease. However, due to imaging degradation effects from the phase-aberration and reverberation, it is still challenging to achieve an accurate transcranial imaging. The objective of this work is to improve the quality of transcranial imaging. To this end, a ray theory based transcranial phase correction method was proposed to correct the phase abberation induced by cranial bones. With the pre-knowledge of the shape and longitudinal velocity of the cranial bones, the corrected phases are derived by solving eikonal equation (ray-theory). The Ideal Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (I-SAFT) is applied for signal acquisitions in simulations and in-vitro phantom experiment with one-element transmitting and all-element receiving method. Dynamic focusing is achieved at each imaging position with I-SAFT and the transcranial imaging distortion is modified with the proposed phase correction method. Simulations and experiments show that the imaging distortion of target circular phantoms was corrected, and the imaging quality is improved after the phase correction. With the proposed method, the average error of the central position of target phantoms decreases from 1.98 mm to 0.21 mm, the eccentricity of fitted ellipse averagely decreases from 0.63 to 0.19, and the average maximum luminance contrast of phantoms improves from 37.36dB to 42.41dB. It is illustrated that the proposed ray-theory based phase correction method might be useful for intracranial imaging.

Abstract:1) Ten 3-niethoxy-phenyl-metabolites of dihydroxy-phenylalanine, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and N-methyl-epinephrine were investigated in urine from 10 patients with functional neural tumors. The acids, alcohols and amines were determined with paper chromatography and the amino-acid 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylalanine with high voltage electrophoresis combined with chromatography. All' these ten above-mentioned metabolites are stable and easy to determine compared with the unstable catechol metabolites themselves.2) The acids, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-man-delic acid and/or 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phe-nylacetic acid, are overexcreted by all these 9 cases of functional neural tumors. Very high values of these acids point to longlasting generalized metastases.3) The alcohols, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenyl-glycol and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenyl-ethanol, vary mainly with the acids and with age. The younger children have relatively higher values of these alcohols in proportion to the acids than the older children....
Ex vivo validation of non-invasive phase correction for transspine focused ultrasound: model performance and target feasibility

Abstract:Objective. To evaluate the feasibility of transspine focused ultrasound using simulation-based phase corrections from a CTderived ray acoustics model. Approach. Bilateral transspine focusing was performed in ex vivo human vertebrae with a spine-specific ultrasound array. Ray acoustics-derived phase correction was compared to geometric focusing and a hydrophonecorrected gold standard. Planar hydrophone scans were recorded in the spinal canal and three metrics were calculated: target pressure, coronal and sagittal focal shift, and coronal and sagittal Sørensen-Dice similarity to the free field. Post hoc analysis was performed in silico to assess the impact of windows between vertebrae on focal shift. Main results. Hydrophone correction reduced mean sagittal plane shift from 1.74 ± 0.82 mm to 1.40 ± 0.82 mm and mean coronal plane shift from 1.07 ± 0.63 mm to 0.54 ± 0.49 mm. Ray acoustics correction reduced mean sagittal plane and coronal plane shift to 1.63 ± 0.83 mm and 0.83 ± 0.60 mm, respectively. Hydrophone correction increased mean sagittal similarity from 0.48 ± 0.22 to 0.68 ± 0.19 and mean coronal similarity from 0.48 ± 0.23 to 0.70 ± 0.19. Ray acoustics correction increased mean sagittal and coronal similarity to 0.53 ± 0.25 and 0.55 ± 0.26, respectively. Target pressure was relatively unchanged across beamforming methods. In silico analysis found that, for some targets, unoccluded paths may have increased focal shift. Significance. Gold standard phase correction significantly reduced coronal shift and significantly increased sagittal and coronal Sørensen-Dice similarity (p < 0.05). Ray acoustics-derived phase correction reduced sagittal and coronal shift and increased sagittal and coronal similarity but did not achieve statistical significance. Across beamforming methods, mean focal shift was comparable to MRI resolution, suggesting that transspine focusing is possible with minimal correction in favorable targets. Future work will explore the mitigation of acoustic windows with anti-focus control points.

Influence of shear waves on transcranial ultrasound propagation in cortical brain regions

Abstract:Transcranial ultrasound applications require accurate simulations to predict intracranial acoustic pressure fields. The current gold standard typically consists of calculating a longitudinal ultrasound wave propagation using a fluid skull model, which is based on full head CT images for retrieving the skull's geometry and elastic constants. Although this approach has extensively been validated for deep brain targets and routinely used in transcranial ultrasound ablation procedures, its accuracy in shallow cortical regions remains unexplored. In this study, we explore the shear wave effects associated with transcranial focused ultrasound propagation, both numerically and experimentally. The intracranial acoustic pressure was measured at different incidence angles at the parietal and frontal regions in an ex vivo human skull. The fluid-like skull model was then compared to the solid model comprising both longitudinal and shear waves. The results consistently show a larger error and variability for both models when considering an oblique incidence, reaching a maximum of 125% mean deviation of the focal area when employing the fluid skull model. Statistical assessments further revealed that ignoring shear waves results in an average ~40% overestimation of the intracranial acoustic pressure and inability to obtain an accurate intracranial acoustic pressure distribution. Moreover, the solid model has a more stable performance, even when small variations in the skull-transducer relative position are introduced. Our results could contribute to the refinement of the transcranial ultrasound propagation modeling methods thus help improving the safety and outcome of transcranial ultrasound therapy in the cortical brain areas.

Effects of chronic administration of polybrominated biphenyls on parameters associated with hepatic drug metabolism.

Abstract:Parameters relating to hepatic microsomal drug metabolism were measured in vitro following 2 weeks exposure of rats to polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) as a dietary supplement at 4.69, 18.75, 75 and 300 ppm. The mixture of PBB was a potent inducer of hepatic microsomal drug metabolism. The pattern of induction seen after PBB exposure was compared with that produced by phenobarbital and 3-methyl-cholanthrene and the pattern of induction observed shared similarities with both of these agents.

However, the skull is a highly attenuating and aberrating medium, with different structures and acoustic properties between samples and even within a sample. Thus, case-specific simulations are needed to perform transcranial focused ultrasound interventions safely. In this article, we provide a review of the different methods used to model the skull and to simulate ultrasound propagation through it.

An element-wise approach for simulating transcranial MRI-guided focused ultrasound thermal ablation

Abstract:This work explored an element-wise approach to model transcranial MRI-guided focused ultrasound (TcMRgFUS) thermal ablation, a noninvasive approach to neurosurgery. Each element of the phased array transducer was simulated individually and could be simultaneously loaded into computer memory, allowing for rapid calculation of the pressure field for different phase offsets used for beam steering and aberration correction. We simulated the pressure distribution for 431 sonications in 32 patients, applied the phase and magnitude values used during treatment, and estimated the resulting temperature rise. We systematically varied the relationship between CT-derived skull density and the acoustic attenuation and sound speed to obtain the best agreement between the predictions and MR temperature imaging (MRTI). The optimization was validated with simulations of 396 sonications from 40 additional treatments. After optimization, the predicted and measured heating agreed well (R2: 0.74 patients 1-32; 0.71 patients 33-72). The dimensions and obliquity of the heating in the simulated temperature maps correlated well with the MRTI (R2: 0.62, 0.74 respectively), but the measured heating was more spatially diffuse. The energy needed to achieve ablation varied by an order of magnitude (3.3-36.1 kJ). While this element-wise approach requires more computation time up front, it can be performed in parallel. It allows for rapid calculation of the three-dimensional heating at the focus for different phase and magnitude values on the array. We also show how this approach can be used to optimize the relationship between CT-derived skull density and acoustic properties. While the relationships found here need further validation in a larger patient population, these results demonstrate the promise of this approach to model TcMRgFUS.

Abstract:To optimize and ensure the safety of ultrasound brain therapy, personalized transcranial ultrasound simulations are very useful. They allow to predict the pressure field, depending on the patient skull and probe position. Most transcranial ultrasound simulations are based on numerical methods which have a long computation time and a high memory usage. The goal of this study is to develop a new semi-analytical field computation method that combines realism and computation speed. Instead of the classic ray tracing, the ultrasonic paths are computed by time of flight minimization. Then the pressure field is computed using the pencil method. This method requires a smooth and homogeneous skull model. The simulation algorithm, so-called SplineBeam, was numerically validated, by comparison with existing solvers, and experimentally validated by comparison with hydrophone measured pressure fields through an ex vivo human skull. SplineBeam simulated pressure fields were close to the experimentally measured ones, with a focus position difference of the order of the positioning error and a maximum pressure difference lower than 6.02%. In addition, for those configurations, SplineBeam computation time was lower than another simulation software, k-Wave's, by two orders of magnitude, thanks to its capacity to compute the field only at the focal spot. These results show the potential of this new method to compute fast and realistic transcranial pressure fields. The combination of this two assets makes it a promising tool for real time transcranial pressure field prediction during ultrasound brain therapy interventions.

Abstract:Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) has been clinically applied as a neuromodulation tool. Particularly, the phase array ultrasound can be applied in TUS to non-invasively focus on the cortex or deep brain. However, the vital phase distortion of the ultrasound induced by the skull limits its clinical application. In the current study, we aimed to develop a hybrid method that combines the ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences with the prDeep technique to achieve focusing ventral intermediate thalamic nucleus (VIM). The time-reversal (TR) approach of the UTE numerical acoustic model of the skull combined with the prDeep algorithm was used to reduce the number of iterations. The skull acoustic model simulation therapy process was establish to valid this method's prediction and focus performance, and the classical TR method were considered as the gold standard (GS). Our approach could restore 75% of the GS intensity in 25 iteration steps, with a superior the noise immunity. Our findings demonstrate that the phase aberration caused by the skull can be estimated using phase retrieval techniques to achieve a fast and accurate transcranial focus. The method has excellent adaptability and anti-noise capacity for satisfying complex and changeable scenarios.

A deep-learning model for one-shot transcranial ultrasound simulation and phase aberration correction

Abstract:Transcranial ultrasound (TUS) has emerged as a promising tool in clinical and research settings due to its potential to modulate neuronal activity, open the blood-brain barrier, facilitate targeted drug delivery via nanoparticles, and perform thermal ablation, all non-invasively. By delivering focused ultrasound waves to precise regions anywhere in the brain, TUS enables targeted energy deposition and is being explored in over fifty clinical trials as a treatment for conditions such as opioid addiction, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, epilepsy, and glioblastoma. However, effective TUS treatment requires careful ultrasound parameter design and precise computation of the focal spot's location and pressure, as skull heterogeneity increases the risk of off-target sonication or insufficient energy delivery to neural tissue. In clinical settings, this phase aberration correction must be computed within seconds. To achieve this, commercial devices often rely on faster methods, such as ray tracing, to predict the focus location and pressure. While computationally efficient, these methods may not always provide the high level of accuracy needed for optimal TUS delivery. We present TUSNet, the first end-to-end deep learning approach to solve for both the pressure field and phase aberration corrections without being bound to the inherent trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. TUSNet computes the 2D transcranial ultrasound pressure field and phase corrections within 21 milliseconds (over $1200\times$ faster than k-Wave, a MATLAB-based acoustic simulation package), achieving $98.3\%$ accuracy in estimating peak pressure magnitude at the focal spot with a mean positioning error of only $0.18$ mm compared to ground truth from k-Wave.

In vivo Adaptive Focusing for Clinical Contrast-Enhanced Transcranial Ultrasound Imaging in Human

Abstract:Imaging the human brain vasculature with high spatial and temporal resolution remains challenging in the clinic today. Transcranial ultrasound is scarcely used for cerebrovascular imaging, due to low sensitivity and strong phase aberrations induced by the skull bone that only enable major brain vessel imaging, even with ultrasound contrast agent injection (microbubbles). Here, we propose an adaptive aberration correction technique for skull bone aberrations based on the backscattered signals coming from intravenously injected microbubbles. Our aberration correction technique was implemented to image brain vasculature in adult humans through temporal and occipital bone windows. For each patient, an effective speed of sound, as well as a phase aberration profile, were determined in several isoplanatic patches spread across the image. This information was then used in the beamforming process. It improved image quality both for ultrafast Doppler imaging and Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM), especially in cases of thick bone windows. For ultrafast Doppler images, the contrast was increased by 4dB on average, and for ULM, the number of detected microbubble tracks was increased by 38%. This technique is thus promising for better diagnosis and follow-up of brain pathologies such as aneurysms or stroke and could make transcranial ultrasound imaging possible even in particularly difficult-to-image patients.

Abstract:A 750kHz, 360-element ultrasound array has been built for transcranial histotripsy applications. This study aims to evaluate its performance to determine whether this array is adequate for treating a wide range of brain locations through a human skull. Treatment location profiles in 2 excised human skulls were experimentally characterized based on passive cavitation mapping. Full-wave acoustic simulations were performed in 8 human skulls to analyze the ultrasound propagation at shallow targets in skulls with different properties. Results showed that histotripsy successfully generated cavitation from deep to shallow targets within 5 mm from the skull surface in the skull with high SDR and small thickness, whereas in the skull with low SDR and large thickness, the treatment envelope was limited up to 16 mm from the skull surface. Simulation results demonstrated that the treatment envelope was highly dependent on the skull acoustic properties. Pre-focal pressure hotspots were observed in both simulation and experiments when targeting near the skull. For each skull, the acoustic pressure loss increases significantly for shallow targets compared to central targets due to high attenuation, large incident angles, and pre-focal pressure hotspots. Strategies including array design optimization, pose optimization, and amplitude correction, are proposed to broaden the treatment envelope. This study identifies the capabilities and limitations of the 360-element transcranial histotripsy array and suggests strategies for designing the nextgeneration transcranial histotripsy array to expand the treatment location profile for a future clinical trial.

Fast Marching Phase-aberration Correction in Plane-Wave Transcranial Imaging

Abstract:Although transcranial ultrasound imaging (TUI) has shown promise for clinical application, it has been shown that variable sound speed would severely affect the quality of TUI, leading to target deterioration and inaccurate depth position in the conventional constant velocity assumed plane-wave imaging (PWI). To overcome these limitations, this work proposed a multi-stencils fast marching (MSFM) phase distortion compensated method with PWI. The MSFM method relies on the approximate Eikonal equation to calculate the time of wavefront propagation through the skull. The proposed phase distortion correction method is more accurate, has a high framerate for transcranial ultrasound path estimation, and offers promising applications in TUI. Simulation experiments demonstrate that for point targets, the mean lateral resolution of MSFM-restored images increased by 55%, and the center position shift decreased by 85%. For the cyst targets, the eccentricity of fitting ellipse decreased by 65%, and the center position shift decreased by 69%.
A transducer positioning method for transcranial focused ultrasound treatment of brain tumors

Abstract:Purpose: As a non-invasive method for brain diseases, transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) offers higher spatial precision and regulation depth. Due to the altered path and intensity of sonication penetrating the skull, the focus and intensity in the skull are difficult to determine, making the use of ultrasound therapy for cancer treatment experimental and not widely available. The deficiency can be effectively addressed by numerical simulation methods, which enable the optimization of sonication modulation parameters and the determination of precise transducer positioning. Methods: A 3D skull model was established using binarized brain CT images. The selection of the transducer matrix was performed using the radius positioning (RP) method after identifying the intracranial target region. Simulations were performed, encompassing acoustic pressure (AP), acoustic field, and temperature field, in order to provide compelling evidence of the safety of tFUS in sonication-induced thermal effects. Results: It was found that the angle of sonication path to the coronal plane obtained at all precision and frequency models did not exceed 10° and 15° to the transverse plane. The results of thermal effects illustrated that the peak temperatures of tFUS were 43.73°C, which did not reach the point of tissue degeneration. Once positioned, tFUS effectively delivers a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) stimulation that targets tumors with diameters of up to 3.72 mm in a one-off. The original precision model showed an attenuation of 24.47 ± 6.13 mm in length and 2.40 ± 1.42 mm in width for the FWHM of sonication after penetrating the skull. Conclusion: The vector angles of the sonication path in each direction were determined based on the transducer positioning results. It has been suggested that when time is limited for precise transducer positioning, fixing the transducer on the horizontal surface of the target region can also yield positive results for stimulation. This framework used a new transducer localization method to offer a reliable basis for further research and offered new methods for the use of tFUS in brain tumor-related research.

Abstract:Ultrafast ultrasound Doppler imaging facilitates the assessment of cerebral hemodynamics with high spatio-temporal resolution. However, the significant acoustic impedance mismatch between the skull and soft tissue results in phase aberrations, which can compromise the quality of transcranial imaging and introduce biases in velocity and direction quantification of blood flow. This paper proposed an aberration correction method that combines deep learning-based skull sound speed modelling with ray theory to realize transcranial plane-wave imaging and ultrafast Doppler imaging. The method was validated through phantom experiments using a linear array with a center frequency of 6.25 MHz, 128 elements, and a pitch of 0.3 mm. The results demonstrated an improvement in the imaging quality of intracranial targets when using the proposed method. After aberration correction, the average locating deviation decreased from 1.40 mm to 0.27 mm in the axial direction, from 0.50 mm to 0.20 mm in the lateral direction, and the average full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) decreased from 1.37 mm to 0.97 mm for point scatterers. For circular inclusions, the average contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) improved from 8.1 dB to 11.0 dB, and the average eccentricity decreased from 0.36 to 0.26. Furthermore, the proposed method was applied to transcranial ultrafast Doppler flow imaging. The results showed a significant improvement in accuracy and quality for blood Doppler flow imaging. The results in the absence of the skull were considered as the reference, and the average normalized root-mean-square errors of the axial velocity component on the five selected axial profiles were reduced from 17.67% to 8.02% after the correction.

Abstract:Transcranial focused ultrasound therapy is becoming a viable tool for treatment of brain related disorders. The technique has been used for treatment of essential tremors and chronic neuropathic pain with good results. In addition, the technique has a broad scope of potential applications including: tumor ablation, localized drug delivery, thrombolysis, and neurostimulation. Performing an efficient focused ultrasound treatment delivery requires planning. Accurate computational models could, in principle, be utilized to provide auxiliary guidelines for such planning. In this work, a computational model is presented for simulating the propagation of ultrasound in transcranial setting. The effects of ultrasound propagation through soft tissue and bone are modeled by coupling wave equations of fluid and solid. The coupled model is numerically evaluated by using a hybrid simulation technique that couples finite difference method with a grid method. The resulting computational model is utilized to simulate focused ultrasound field in clinical patient treatment setting. Effect of absorption of heat into the brain tissue is further simulated by using the bioheat equation. Simulation results are compared with magnetic resonance thermometry performed during the clinical treatments for evaluation of validity of the computational model.
