Abstract:A Multiple cascade adaptive control approach based on backstepping technique was proposed to treat with the control problem of a hydraulic servo position control system.The design method of the controller and the stability analysis of the system were given out.The results of simulation show that the control approach can overcome the nonlinear problem of the hydraulic system , has nice robustness ,and improves tracking accuracy considerably.

Abstract:A multiple sliding mode robust adaptive control strategy is proposed for a class of higher-order nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertain parameters and external load.Recursive technique is used to simplify the control problem of higher-order system.A robust adaptation scheme was used to reduce the tracking error resulted from system uncertainties.First,the recursive technique and state feedback precise linearization scheme is used to obtain the design method of multiple sliding mode controller of a given system.Next,the system-parameter-update law and robust adaptive controller of an uncertain system are presented based on Lyapunov scheme.The proposed method is applied to a position tracking control of electro-hydraulic servo system.The simulation shows that the control approach has good robustness and improves position tracking accuracy considerably.

Abstract:The natural frequency of the electrohydraulic system in mobile machinery is always very low, which brings difficulties to the controller design. To improve the tracking performance of the hydraulic system, mathematical modeling of the electrohydraulic lifting system and the rubber hose was accomplished according to an electrohydraulic lifting test rig built in the laboratory. Then, valve compensation strategy, including spool opening compensation (SOC) and dead zone compensation (DZC), was designed based on the flow-pressure characteristic of a closed-centered proportional valve. Comparative experiments on point-to-point trajectory tracking between a proportional controller with the proposed compensations and a traditional PI controller were conducted. Experiment results show that the maximal absolute values of the tracking error are reduced from 0.039 m to 0.019 m for the slow point-to-point motion trajectory and from 0.085 m to 0.054 m for the fast point-to-point motion trajectory with the proposed compensations. Moreover, tracking error of the proposed controller was analyzed and corresponding suggestions to reduce the tracking error were put forward.

Abstract:With the increasing application of automated hydraulic excavators, the demand for high-level control performance and significant energy saving schemes becomes stronger. The traditional hydraulic excavators with single-pump power source have amounts of coupling loss on throttling valves due to multi-actuator effect. Moreover, their operability is usually influenced by the load varying in a large range. This paper proposes a multi-pump system with on-off valve matrix to eliminate the coupling loss by dividing the system into several single-pump single-actuator subsystems. A pump/valve coordinate control strategy with multiple working modes is developed to adapt the load variation. First, mathematical modeling including mechanical part and hydraulic part is carried out based on dynamic analysis. Second, a three-level coordinated control scheme is proposed: 1) The motion tracking level utilizes backstepping control technique with load observation to obtain the desired hydraulic force; 2) The working mode switching level configures the pump and valve control mode to maximize energy saving according to load condition; 3) The force control level utilizes control technique to guarantee the stability and dynamic performance. Finally, comparative experimental results are presented to show the good control performance and significant energy saving achieved by the proposed multi-pump multi-actuator system as well as the control strategy.

Abstract:In order to restrain the coupled disturbance of each degree of freedom of the hydraulic Stewart platform, combination tracking errors, which consist of the tracking errors of each degree of freedom and the coupled position error, are proposed in this article through Taylor series expansion of the trajectory. The coupled position error expressed by the differential position errors of each two neighbor degrees of freedom is used to represent the result of the action of the coupling disturbance. Backstepping design methodology is adopted to develop an adaptive robust position tracking controller with uncertain parameters in the system dynamics. Both parts of the combination tracking errors are shown to be exponentially stable under the proposed control law. Simulation results with the combination of AMESim and MATLAB demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach as contrasted with the traditional proportion-integration-differentiation (PID) controller in improving the error tracking of each degree of freedom with coupling disturbance.

Abstract:The open-loop two-move method is an effective compensation to remove oscillations caused by control valve stiction, but takes too much time for implementation. This paper proposes a new implementation of open-loop two-move compensation method based on the estimation of controller output associated with the desired valve position, but without any assumption of the valve position in oscillation. The proposed method can reduce the time cost and lower the amplitude of open-loop step responses, leading to a quicker response of the process and less negative effect during the compensation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by several examples.

Abstract:The equivalent linear tracking differentiator near the equilibrium point was analyzed in order to solve the difficulties of various tracking functions selection and parameters setting.A unified model of the nonlinear tracking differentiator near the equilibrium point was presented.Then the asymptotic stability was proven by the Lyapunov method.The unified nonlinear model was further linearized near the equilibrium point and the effect of different nonlinear structures on linearized parameters was analyzed.Simulation examples verified the effectiveness of the equivalent linear model.The filtering property and the resulted phase lag were analyzed by the frequency response of the linearized model,and a decoupled parameter optimization method was proposed.A compound tracking differentiator with feedforward was proposed to reduce the phase lag and suppress the noise introduced by feedforward.Simulations showed the effectiveness of proposed parameter tuning method.The compound tracking differentiator achieved the best combination of tracking error and differential error.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. To meet the increasing demand for trajectory tracking accuracy and high-efficiency requirements in modern mobile machinery, this paper proposes a practical adaptive robust control method based on the dual-valve parallel electro-hydraulic servo system. Existing tracking control strategies for such servo systems rely on a backstepping method and assume that full states are known, which is stringent in practice. To cope with the problem, we reduce the mathematical model order of the studied system using singular perturbation theory in this paper, and only the position feedback is required for the control implementation. Then, to achieve high accuracy tracking control, a direct adaptive robust control scheme combing with a dynamic flow allocation layer is adopted to synthesize the controller. With this method, parameter uncertainties and load disturbance are rejected, and valve characteristics are considered in the dynamic flow allocation layer to solve the flow redundancy problem, respectively. Convergence of the simplified system tracking results is proved theoretically. Extensive co-simulations and experimental tests are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, both tracking precision and flow distribution can be achieved efficiently by simple parameter adjustments in the field.

Exponential Tracking Control of a Hydraulic Proportional Directional Valve and Cylinder Via Integrator Backstepping

Abstract:Hydraulic systems are widely used in manufacturing processes and transportation systems where energy intensive operations are performed and “machine” control is vital. A variety of flow control products exist including manual directional control valves, proportional directional control valves, and servo-valves. The selection of a control valve actuation strategy is dependent on the system response requirements, permissible pressure drop, and hardware cost. Although high bandwidth servo-valves offer fast response times, the higher expense, susceptibility to debris, and pressure drop may be prohibitive. Thus, the question exists whether the economical proportional directional control valve’s performance can be sufficiently enhanced using nonlinear control strategies to begin approaching that of servo-valves. In this paper, exponential tracking control of a hydraulic cylinder and proportional directional control valve, with spool position feedback, is achieved for precise positioning of a mechanical load. An analytical and empirical mathematical model is developed which describes the transient behavior of the integrated components. A nonlinear backstepping control algorithm is designed to accommodate inherent system nonlinearities.

Abstract:To address the problems of a low tracking accuracy and slow error convergence in high-order single-input, single-output electro-optical tracking systems, a backstepping control method based on a Softsign linear–nonlinear tracking differentiator is proposed. First, a linear–nonlinear tracking differentiator is designed in conjunction with the Softsign excitation function, using its output as an approximate replacement for the conventional differentiation process. Then, this is combined with backstepping control to eliminate the "explosion of complexity" problem in conventional backstepping procedures due to repeated derivation of virtual control quantities. This reduces the workload of parameter tuning, takes into account the rapidity and stability of signal convergence, and improves the trajectory tracking performance. This method can ensure the boundedness of the system signal. The effectiveness and superiority of this control method are verified through simulations and experiments.

Design and Implementation Based on Backstepping for Tracking Control of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots

Abstract:Differential driven mobile robots are typical nonholonomic systems, involving system nonlinearity, which brings challenges to trajectory tracking control. We propose a kinematics control strategy based on backstepping to solve the nonlinearity of the system in this paper, in which the system is divided into three subsystems and two virtual control variables are derived to design the controller. Benefiting from this improvement, the design of the Lyapunov function is simplified and the nonlinearity is solved effectively. In terms of LaSalle invariance theorem, global asymptotic convergence of the provided control scheme is achievable. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the derived control method is validated in both the co-simulation of MATLAB and ADAMS (performed on a differential driven wheeled mobile robot) and the experiment (implemented on a tracked mobile robot). Results indicate that the controller is effective to make the nonholonomic mobile robots converge to reference trajectories in finite time.

Abstract:The accuracy of position control is of great importance in industrial robot application. However, the control performance of traditional model-based methods is limited by the parameter variations and uncertainties. Therefore, when the harmonic drive gear undergoes load torque disturbances, the underdamped vibration will be generated in the link and a steady-state error will be existed in the system. In this case, a backstepping control structure based on active disturbance rejection controller is proposed. According to the method, additional feedback of link variables is introduced by the backstepping control to improve the system damping. In the meantime, torque disturbances, parameter variations and unmodeled dynamics are integrated and observed by the extended state observers. The observation errors can be sharply decayed and converged to zero with proper poles assigned. Combined with the feedforward compensation, the steady-state error is significantly reduced. The effectiveness of the method is validated by the simulation results.

Abstract:Direct-driven electro-hydraulic systems have a wide range of applications owing to their advantages of energy-savings and relatively high control flexibilities in comparison with classic variable displacement pump-controlled hydraulic systems. However, the control accuracy is limited by the inherent nonlinear hydraulic dynamics. Additionally, the pump flow rate may become nonlinear at low pump speeds, causing large pressure-related flow deviations; thereby, limiting the improvement of motion control accuracy. Unfortunately, the pump flow nonlinearity has been ignored or oversimplified without effective modeling in most studies so far. To improve the control accuracy of direct-drive hydraulic systems, a high-precision control strategy must be designed to deal with the nonlinear characteristics and resolve the issue of nonlinear pump flow at low speeds. This article proposes an adaptive robust motion control strategy for a direct-driven electro-hydraulic system with adaptive pump flow rate model compensation. A backstepping integrated direct/indirect adaptive robust controller is designed to deal with the dynamic nonlinearities and uncertainties, which guarantees the stability of the entire hydraulic system. Furthermore, a parameterized polynomial fitting modeling strategy is proposed to accurately describe the nonlinear characteristics of the pump flow rate. Therefore, the uncertain parameters are adjusted in real-time, achieving satisfactory parameter estimations and model compensation for asymptotic motion tracking. Theoretical proof and comparative experiments demonstrate the advantages of the proposed control strategy with adaptive polynomial fitting model compensation for high-precision motion control.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, many works focusing on improving motion tracking accuracy of hydraulic actuators have been done by developing nonlinear control algorithms. Model nonlinearity compensation, such as valve deadband, nonlinear friction force, and flow leakages, is one of the key points in the control design. However, the inherently nonlinear valve flow characteristic is usually treated as linear for simplicity, which might lead to undesirable flow rate deviation and reduce the tracking precision especially when the cylinder moves at a low speed. In this study, an online valve flow nonlinearity compensation method is developed to improve the motion tracking precision of hydraulic actuators. Specifically, polynomials are used to mimic the nonlinear valve flow characteristic between the valve control input, pressure difference, and flow. The coefficients in polynomials are synthesized based on the offline identification experiments while the lumped discrepancy is updated online in the proposed control design. The adaptive robust control approach is also used to develop the closed-loop motion controller, which can handle the parametric uncertainties and uncertain nonlinearities in the electro-hydraulic system. Comparative experiments are conducted on an independent metering system with a differential cylinder and the results show the improved tracking precision with nonlinear valve flow comparing to the linear one, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:With the development of industrialization, valve-controlled hydraulic actuators are gradually attracting attention for their impressive power-to-weight ratio, high torque/force output, and significant load capacity, and their future application in heavy engineering has great potential. However, due to the complex higher-order nonlinear dynamics as well as the parameter uncertainties and uncertain nonlinearities of hydraulic actuators, the design of their controllers is full of challenges. Moreover, when facing practical work requirements such as load estimation, achieving an ideal position-tracking effect alone may not be sufficient. Accurate parameter estimation becomes equally important in such cases. For this purpose, a direct/indirect adaptive robust controller (DIARC) is proposed in this paper. By incorporating nonlinearities and uncertainties into the dynamic modeling and compensating for them with adaptive robust controllers, the effectiveness of the control can be improved. Furthermore, we have enhanced the traditional adaptive law by integrating not only the tracking error but also the parameter estimation error information. This improvement allows for a more accurate and reliable estimation of the parameter. The control performance is simulated and verified. The simulated results indicate that the implemented controller not only enhances tracking accuracy but also accurately estimates the unknown parameter.

Abstract:A valve-controlled asymmetric cylinder loading system was taken as the research object in this study. To solve the problems existing in electro-hydraulic servo loading systems, such as low loading accuracy, interference from the external environment, and strong nonlinear, time-variant, and uncertain parameters in position control, a position control strategy for valve-controlled cylinders, based on the adaptive backsliding control method, is proposed. The system was divided into several subsystems, then, the stability of each subsystem was guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability criterion, and the unknown parameters of the system were expressed by known parameters to ensure stability. To conduct experimental verification, a set of valve-controlled asymmetric cylinder loading system hardware-in-a-loop platform is designed based on the xPC Target real-time control kernel in MATLAB, and the application of complex control algorithms is realized in engineering systems. Through experiments and simulations, the effectiveness of the control method is verified. During 2-Hz sinusoidal tracking, the maximum deviation for the adaptive controller was reduced by 47.7% from that for a PID controller, and the phase lag was smaller. The results show that the adaptive backsliding control method is effective, and the research results are of great significance to the high performance control of hydraulic loading system and the engineering application of complex algorithms.
Adaptive Backstepping Control of Electro Hydrostatic Actuator with Improved Parameter Estimation

Abstract:Electro hydrostatic actuator (EHA) is a pump-controlled hydraulic system and has been successfully applied in the aeronautical field by the advantages of miniaturization and energy-savings. However, due to the high order dynamics and the existence of various nonlinearities and uncertainties in the EHA system, it is a challenge to achieve accurate motion control. Most of the recent research on adaptive hydraulic control only focuses on the position tracking control performance while the parameter adaptation performance is unsatisfying. Therefore, this paper proposes a adaptive backstepping control algorithm for EHA system, especially considering improved hydraulic parameter estimation. Firstly, the parameter estimation errors are formulated by introducing an auxiliary filter operation that avoided used the system acceleration information. Then a novel adaptive law is designed to update the parameter estimation using both the position tracking errors and the estimation errors which improve the parameter estimation performance compared traditional adaptive law. Moreover, due to the higher-order dynamics of the system, the motion controller is designed using a modified backstepping method, in which the proposed adaptive law is used to on-line estimate the unknown parameters at each step. Theoretically, the stability of the EHA system and asymptotic motion tracking and parameter convergence performance can be proved by Lyapunov function. Finally, comparative simulations are conducted to vaelidata the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control approach.

Abstract:Incomplete differentiation-based improved adaptive backstepping integral sliding mode control is proposed.The integral sliding mode control combined the backstepping control with sliding mode control is used to improve the robustness and the anti-interference ability.The incomplete differential with the low pass filtering behavior is employed to replace the pure differential for reducing interference caused by the pure differential mutation signal.In the hydraulic systems, the non-structural uncertainties such as the nonlinear friction will reduce the tracking accuracy for the hydraulic servo system. In this paper, an incomplete differential-based improved adaptive backstepping integral sliding mode control (ID-BIABISMC) is proposed to realize the position control for the hydraulic servo system based on the friction compensation. The backstepping-based control being integrated the integral sliding mode surface-based sliding mode control with the friction compensation are used to solve the problem of non-structural uncertainty of the hydraulic system. The incomplete differential is introduced to the adaptive update law, by which the low-pass filtering behavior in the incomplete differential is capable of effectively suppressing the interference caused by the pure differential mutation signal. Compared with the traditional adaptive backstepping control (ABC), adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC), the adaptive backstepping sliding mode control (ABSMC) and the proposed adaptive backstepping integral sliding mode control (IABISMC). The experimental results verify the high accuracy tracking performance of the proposed the incomplete differential-based improved adaptive backstepping integral sliding mode control (ID-BIABISMC). For the responses of the sinusoidal signal <span class="math"><math>40sin(0.2πt+1.5π)+40mm</math></span> and step signal with 30 mm, the corresponding tracking accuracy for ID-BIABISMC are 0.005 mm and 2.15 mm, respectively.

Abstract:Hydraulic manipulators play an irreplaceable role in many heavy-duty applications. Currently, there are stronger demands for the hydraulic manipulator to achieve high precision, as well as high force/power. However, due to the inherent nonlinearities of its high-order dynamics, the precision of the manipulator has been a common weakness compared with electrically driven ones. Thus, in this paper, a nonlinear adaptive robust control method for the hydraulic manipulator is proposed. To make the controller more applicable to practical engineering projects, this study tried to control each joint independently instead of directly based on the complicated multi-degree high-order dynamics, while guaranteeing the control precision by the adaptive nonlinear model compensation, as well as a robust feedback design. The closed-loop control performance was theoretically verified. Besides, several sets of comparative motion tracking experiments were conducted, and the proposed closed-loop system achieved high precision under different trajectories and postures.

Abstract:As a novel nonlinear control, backstepping is applied to the position tracking controller design of PMSM servo system. The design rule of backstepping makes the system global ultimate asymptotical stabilization(GUAS). The controller not only makes the system GUAS, but also has a quick and accurate position tracking performance. The position tracking can be greatly affected by the change of load torque. To efficiently reduce the effect of the change of load torque, the system design can estimate the load torque and regulate the controller with real time. The design can make the change of load torque have very little disturbance caused due to the position tracking error. At last, Matlab is used to simulate the whole system to prove the efficiency and feasibility of system design.
