Abstract:In this study, the growth, biomass, and bio-constituents of Chroococcus sp., Haematococcus pluvialis, Dunaliella sp., Coelastrella saipanensis, and Chlorella sp. grown in dairy wastewater and fish waste as nutrients were assessed. As both wastes constitute organic and inorganic nutrients, dairy wastes contain proportionately higher amount of K, Na, and sugars than the fish wastes which contains nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, and protein as nutrients. Algae grown among different dilutions of wastes showed that medium supplemented with 50% dairy waste significantly increased the growth, biomass, carbohydrates, and protein content in algae such as Chroococcus sp., H. pluvialis, C. saipanensis, and Chlorella sp., whereas in Dunaliella sp. by addition of 10% dairy waste showed maximum growth and other bio-constituents, but 50% fish waste used for Chroococcus sp., C. saipanensis, and Chlorella sp. growth medium. A total of 25% fish waste used for Dunaliella sp. and H. pluvialis. The enhanced growth and bio-constitute accumulation in microalgae grown using waste nutrients was further confirmed by increased growth observed in nitrogen-depleted waste supplemented medium over control (only medium). Despite increased growth and bio-constituent accumulation in algae grown by waste nutrients, Chroococcus sp., H. pluvialis, and Chlorella sp. grown by waste nutrients showing significant decrease in chlorophyll content were found as efficient in absorbing waste nutrients by heterotrophic mode. The Chroococcus sp. and Dunaliella sp. grown in dairy waste and Chlorella sp., H. pluvialis, and C. saipanensis grown in fish waste accumulated intracellular non-polar storage lipids identified through fluorescence study were recognised as suitable biorefinery candidates for lipid sequestration by utilizing waste nutrients, besides high value pigments. This study concludes that dairy and fish wastes are cost-effective nutrient resource for enhanced growth, bio-constituents, lipids, and high values pigments accumulation in microalgae as biorefinery.

Abstract:Microalgae have been identified as a promising option for concomitant bioremediation of wastewaters and biodiesel generation. However, the nutritional composition of wastewater differs between locations, and some wastewater contains low nitrogen levels that inhibit microalgae growth, resulting in poor total nutrient removal and biomass output. Furthermore, the high cost of harvesting microalgae biomass is a barrier to commercial microalgae farming. This study aims to employ a novel microalga, Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I for bioremediation of low-nitrogen domestic wastewater. The nutritional balance of the wastewater was achieved with the addition of urea at two different levels and then was used for the cultivation of microalgae. The results showed that the optimized nutritional condition included total nitrogen (TN) of 250 mg/L and total phosphorus (TP) of 5 mg/L (N 250 /P 5 ). The culture cultivated in this optimal medium improved chemical oxygen demand (COD), TN, and TP removal by as much as 89.5 %, 99.98 %, and 99.1 %, respectively. Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I growth was likewise at its peak, with a value of 5.1 g/L, but with a low harvesting efficiency (0.02 %). Subsequently, Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I was co-cultured with a novel cyanobacterium, Limnothrix sp. DDVG II under the optimal nutritional condition. The results revealed a 99.5 % increase in harvesting efficiency with effective wastewater treatment. The co-culture-derived biodiesel also complied with the standard specifications. Further, analysis of the essential amino acid content and in vitro digestibility of the biomass proved its usefulness as a feed supplement. Overall, this study demonstrated a promising future for a cleaner environment and sustainable bio-economy of microalgae.

Abstract:Cytidine deaminase from Escherichia coli was found to catalyze the hydrolytic deamination of 5,6-dihydrocytidine, at a rate slightly lower than its rate of action on the normal substrate. The results suggest that nucleophilic addition by the enzyme at the 5,6 position of the substrate is not an essential part of catalysis, unless the active site is so flexible that deamination can occur with addition in one case (cytidine) and without addition in another case (5,6-dihydrocytidine). 3,4,5,6-Tetrahydrouridine bears a close structural resemblance to a hypothetical "tetrahedral" intermediate formed by direct water addition to 5,6-dihydrocytidine. The hydrolytic activity of the enzyme toward 5,6-dihydrocytidine and its potent inhibition by 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrouridine are presumably related by the ability of the active site to stabilize structures of this kind by tight binding. Cytidine deaminase shows no detectable activity as a catalyst for the dehydration of 6-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrouridine.

Abstract:Promoting biomass production of the involved strains simultaneously with efficient nutrients removal from wastewater is realistic significance to ensure successful application of microalgae-based process for wastewater treatment. Enhancement of biomass productivity and nutrients removal by mixotrophic cultivation of Desmodesmus sp.CHX1 was conducted in this study when treating aerated piggery wastewater. The results showed that air-stripping might be an effective option as a pre-treatment to remove ammonia nitrogen from piggery wastewater. Mixotrophic cultivation of microalga-bacteria system significantly promoted algal growth and nutrients removal efficiency with the maximal biomass and lipid productivity being 0.869gl(-1)d(-1) and 118.2mgl(-1)d(-1) (14.5% of the lipid content), respectively, which were superior to other reported values. Nutrients in the piggery wastewater were also removed efficiently, for example, the removal rates of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus were 87.3%, over 95%, and 93.1%, respectively. This study suggested that mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae-bacteria system might be a practical alternative to efficiently enhance nutrients removal from piggery wastewater coupled with biomass production. A slight reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), however, indicate that it cannot replace the traditional biological treatment, and more researches are required to find the optimum balance between reduction in COD value and biomass production.
Utilizing Mixed Cultures of Microalgae to Up-Cycle and Remove Nutrients from Dairy Wastewater

Abstract:This study explores the novel use of mixed cultures of microalgae—Spirulina platensis, Micractinium, and Chlorella—for nutrient removal from dairy wastewater (DW). Microalgae were isolated from a local wastewater treatment plant and cultivated under various light conditions. The results showed significant biomass production, with mixed cultures achieving the highest biomass (2.51 g/L), followed by Spirulina (1.98 g/L) and Chlorella (1.92 g/L). Supplementing DW (75%) with BG medium (25%) significantly enhanced biomass and pH levels, improving pathogenic bacteria removal. Spirulina and mixed cultures exhibited high nitrogen removal efficiencies of 92.56% and 93.34%, respectively, while Chlorella achieved 86.85% nitrogen and 83.45% phosphorus removal. Although growth rates were lower under phosphorus-limited conditions, the microalgae adapted well to real DW, which is essential for effective algal harvesting. Phosphorus removal efficiencies ranged from 69.56% to 86.67%, with mixed cultures achieving the highest removal. Microbial and coliform removal efficiencies reached 97.81%, with elevated pH levels contributing to significant reductions in fecal E. coli and coliform levels. These findings suggest that integrating microalgae cultivation into DW treatment systems can significantly enhance nutrient and pathogen removal, providing a sustainable solution for wastewater management.

Abstract:The piggery digestate of high ammonia was mixed with the anoxic aerated effluent of high nitrate and phosphorus, to cultivate a microalgal-bacterial consortium for simultaneous pollution removal and resource recovery. The highest removal of total inorganic nitrogen was achieved at 324.77 mg/L in 40% piggery digestate mixed with 60% anoxic aerated effluent, along with the most microalgae biomass production. The crude protein and fatty acids of C14-C20 in microalgae cells were 21.80% and 69.78%, indicating that this mixing strategy could produce abundant microalgal biomass suitable for biofuel generation and animal feed. High-throughput sequencing showed that microbial diversity increased and Paenibacillus, Thiopseudomonas and Pseudomonas were the dominant species promoting microalgal growth. Overall, these results provided a new insight of mixing two types of wastewaters for cultivating microalgal-bacterial consortia, to remove contamination and recover nutrients simultaneously.

Abstract:Abstract The combination of wastewater treatment and biodiesel production using algal cultivation was studied in the present work. The two main goals of the work were achieved by the cultivation of freshwater microalgae such as Chlamydomonas sp., Scenedesmus ecornis , and Scenedesmus communis in two different dilutions of fertilizer plant wastewater (FWWD1 and FWWD2) collected from Yara Suomi Oy, Finland. The growth pattern of different algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 was observed. The effect of pH on biomass concentration, lipid content, biomass productivity, and lipid productivity by all three algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 were monitored. The maximum biomass concentration and productivity were observed in FWWD1 at pH7.5 for Chlamydomonas sp. and at pH 8.5 for S. ecornis and S. communis . The maximum lipid content was detected in Chlamydomonas sp at pH5.5, followed by S. ecornis and then S. communis at pH 7.5 in FWWD2 obtained after co-solvent extraction method. The most significant removal percentage of COD by all algal species were observed in FWWD1, whereas the highest removal percentage of TN and TP were detected in FWWD2, respectively. The fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) characterization of each algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 at their optimum pH was investigated to determine the quality of obtained biodiesel.

Abstract:The common means of wastewater pre-treatment is impractical in large-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). There is still a lack of suitable microalgae to treat raw dairy wastewater (DWW) with high organic matter concentration. For screening more diverse microalgae to treat raw DWW, the growth characteristics and metabolite production of ten algal strains cultured in undiluted DWW were studied in this paper, among which three were able to tolerate excessive chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and yielded high biomass concentration. Under the condition of 25 +/- 1 degrees C and 55 mu mol/m2/s, the most suitable strain were Scenedesmus SDEC-13, Chlorella pyrenoidosa SDEC-35, and Chlorella vulgaris SDEC-34, all of which had biomass concentrations above 1.2 g/L and protein contents above 45%. Based on the feasibility of cultivating microalgae with raw DWW, an alternative alga-based WWTP strategy was provided for the first time. The most important modification was the construction of the photobioreactor (PBR) to replace hydrolytic upflow sludge bed (HUSB) reactor and remove anaerobic-aerobic (AO) pond. The dairy WWTP with a PBR unit (1.68 x 104 m3) will yield a biomass production of 1.44 x 106 kg/year while capturing 2.59 x 106 kg CO2/year. Through carbon comparison and economic analysis, we believe that the use of microalgal PBRs for the treatment of wastewater from dairy plants presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for the future. And future research should focus on pilot scale photobioreactor in the natural environment and large-scale treatment of dairy wastewater.

Abstract:Impact of varying nitrate (NO 3 -N) and phosphate (PO 4 -P) concentrations and sewage water (SW) on the growth, nutrient removal, lipid accumulation, enzymatic antioxidant activity and phytochemical contents of the microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus, Coelastrella tenuitheca, Chroococcus turgidus and Parachlorella kessleri under monoculture and their consortia have been investigated. High growth rates were observed for all the four algae in both mono and mixed culture conditions at enhanced concentrations of N (1500 mg/L NO 3 -N) and P (40 mg/L PO 4 -P). The species Scenedesmus dimorphus outperformed other microalgae growing in SW in efficiently removing nitrogen. The algal consortia of mixed species was found to be more effective in phosphorus removal. The carbohydrate and protein contents were highest in Parachlorella kessleri, about 37% and 44%, respectively, in SW cultivation. The algal consortia demonstrated highest starch content (4%) in nitrogen deprived growth medium. Highest lipid production (43%) was observed in the SW culture. The species Coelastrella tenuitheca, Chroococcus turgidus and Scenedesmus dimorphus irrespective of the growth media indicated significant accumulation of phenol, flavonoid and tannin. The DPPH, catalase and ascorbic peroxidase assay showed pronounced antioxidant activity. Nutrient (N and P) enrichment exhibited enhanced antioxidant enzymatic activity and accumulation of cell storage products. This study explores the response mechanisms and nutrient removal capabilities of various microalgal species and their consortia in sewage water treated media. The results provide valuable insights into the potential role of algae in wastewater treatment processes, revealing high tolerance and considerable NO 3 -N and PO 4 -P removal capabilities of Scenedesmus dimorphus and algal consortia toward different wastewaters. The results of the study are relevant for the development of sustainable solutions for water pollution management. The algae and their consortia grown in wastewater showed high levels of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, bioactive compounds accumulation and antioxidant activity rendering them a sustainable and renewable resource for various industrial applications.

Abstract:Unplanned and unmonitored growth of civilization and industries recorded in the previous decades have resulted in the introduction of several pollutants of emerging concern like pharmaceuticals and antibiotic drugs, endocrine disrupters, personal care products, etc. in adjacent aquatic environments. Moreover, the primary considerations of recent wastewater treatment strategies include energy neutrality and efficient recovery of valuable products as end/byproducts of the concerned process. The present study reviews such recent advances in designs, development, and implementation of algae based photobioreactors for simultaneous CO2 capture and treatment of effluents containing various types of emerging contaminants with negligible energy input. It also discusses the subsequent usage of algal biomass for production of value-added products like bioethanol, alginate, etc. This study has primarily addressed the potential and limitations of such photobioreactors for simultaneous achievement of wastewater remediation, CO2 sequestration, and bioenergy production with a zero-discharge concept.

Abstract:This study is to find the optimum classifier that can be easy and robust diagnostic method of the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using a heartbeat signal. The heartbeat signal was acquired from the 92 patients with OSA. The dataset consists 98,060 epochs, from them the training sets contained 68,642 epochs from the 63 OSA patients and test sets contained 29,418 epochs from the 29 OSA patients, respectively. The heartbeat signal was analyzed in the time and frequency domain and six features were extracted (normal-to-normal [NN], standard deviation of mean NN [SDNN], root mean square of successive differences [rMSSD], low-frequency [LF], high-frequency [HF], and LF/HF ratio). All extracted features were used to train the following classifiers: linear discriminant analysis (LDA), decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and support vector machine (SVM). The top three classifiers (SVM, DT, and LDA) showed the accuracy of 93.2%, 93.2%, and 93.2% for test sets, respectively. Then, the top three classifiers could be effective on sleep studies and OSA detections.

Abstract:Eighteen microalgae, including two local isolates, were evaluated for their ability to grow and remove nutrients from unsterilized primary or secondary wastewater effluents as well as wastewater supplemented with nutrient-rich anaerobic digester centrate (ADC). Most of the tested species except several phylogenetically clustered Chlorella sorokiniana including local isolates and Scenedesmus strains were unable to grow efficiently. This may reflect the presence of certain genetic traits important for robust growth in the unsterilized wastewater. The maximum algal-specific growth rates and biomass density obtained in these bacterial-contaminated cultures were in the range of 0.8–1 day−1 and 250–350 mg L−1, respectively. ADC supplementation was especially helpful to biologically treated secondary effluent with its lower initial macronutrient and micronutrient content. As a result of algal growth, total nitrogen and orthophosphate levels were reduced by as much as 90 and 70 %, respectively. Biological assimilation was estimated to be the main mechanism of nitrogen removal in primary and secondary effluents with ammonia volatilization and bacterial nitrification-denitrification contributing for cultures supplemented with ADC. Assimilation by algae served as the principal mechanism of orthophosphate remediation in secondary wastewater cultures, while chemical precipitation appeared also to be important for orthophosphate removal in primary wastewater. Overall, cultivation of microalgae in primary and primary + 5 % ADC may be more favorable from an economical and sustainability perspective due to elimination of the costly and energy-intensive biological treatment step. These findings demonstrate that unsterilized wastewater and ADC can serve as critical nutrient sources for biomass generation and that robust microalgae can be potent players in wastewater phytoremediation.

Abstract:Abstract Biopesticides offer a sustainable and efficient alternative to synthetic pesticides, providing a safer and more eco-friendly solution to pest management. The present work proposes an innovative approach that integrates crop protection and wastewater treatment using thermophilic microalgal strain Chlorella thermophila (CT) cultivated in nutrient-rich dairy wastewater as a growth medium. The microalgae was cultivated mixotrophically and was able to reduce both organic carbon as well as nutrient load of the dairy wastewater efficiently. The integrated circular biorefinery approach combines biomass cultivation, extraction of biopesticide compounds, and conversion to biocrude. The antimicrobial activity of the biopesticidal extracts against Xanthomonas oryzae and Pantoea agglomerans , the causative agent of bacterial rice blight, is assessed through in vitro studies. The biomass extract obtained is able to inhibit the growth of both the above-mentioned plant pathogens successfully. Mass spectroscopy analysis indicates the presence of Neophytadiene that has previously been reported for the inhibition of several pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Several other value-added products such as linoleic acid and nervonic acids were also been detected in the microalgal biomass which have extremely high nutraceutical and medicinal values. Furthermore, the study investigates the potential for co-production of biocrude from the biorefinery process via hydrothermal liquefaction. Overall, the findings of this present work represent an innovative and sustainable approach that combines wastewater treatment and crop protection using microalgal biomass.

Abstract:We present a holistic approach in establishing a successful green integrated bio-refinery system with improved biomass, lipid and lutein productivity, while remediating wastewater and sequestering CO2 with potential biodiesel and healthcare applications. To achieve this we evaluated the effect of four process parameters: CO2% supply; acetate concentration; poultry litter waste (PLW) concentration; and light intensity on cultivation of Chlorella minutissma following the Taguchi's design of experimental technique. A four factors, three levels orthogonal array was adopted to cultivate Chlorella minutissma in specially developed waste water medium. Effect of the process parameters on biomass productivity, CO2 fixation rate, lipid content, lutein productivity and bioremediation capacity were determined. Results obtained from individual parametric combinations and Signal/Noise (S/N) ratio responses indicated S3 (5% CO2, 100 mg L-1 of acetate, 10 g L-1 of poultry litter, and 15, 000 lux of light intensity) combination as the optimum cultivation condition. Following the S3 combination a significant enhancement in biomass productivity (292 mg L-1 d-1) with exceedingly high CO2 fixation rate and photosynthetic efficiency (51.51 g L-1 d-1 of CO2; P.E: 15.81%) was achieved. A maximum of 169.29 mg L-1 d-1 of lipid with a balanced distribution of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids conformed to the international standard for biodiesel was achieved. Additionally, 7.21 mg L-1 d-1 of lutein productivity was also accomplished within 7 day of cultivation, while remediating up to 93-90% of nitrogenous and phosphate substrates. Statistically, the results reinforced our findings with the S/N responses and experimental observations for a particular property.

Abstract:Liquid byproducts and organic wastes generated from dairy processing units contribute as the largest source of industrial food wastewater. Though bacteria-mediated treatment strategies are largely implemented, a more effective and innovative management system is needed of the hour. Thus, the current study involves the cultivation of centric diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis , and Thalassiosira weissflogii in simulated dairy wastewater (SDWW) formulated using varying amounts of milk powder with artificial seawater f/ 2 media (ASW). The results revealed that cell density and biomass productivity were highest in the 2.5% SDWW treatment cultures of both the strains, the maximum being in C. gracilis (7.5 × 10 6 cells mL − 1 ; 21.1 mg L −1 day −1 ). Conversely, the total carotenoid, chrysolaminarin, and phenol content were negatively impacted by SDWW. However, a considerable enhancement in the total lipid content was reported in the 2.5% SDWW culture of both species. Furthermore, the fatty acid profiling revealed that though the total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content was highest in the control setups, the total mono polyunsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content was higher in the 5% SDWW setups (30.66% in C. gracilis and 33.21% in T. weissflogii ). In addition to it, in the cultures utilizing energy from external carbon sources provided by SDWW, the biodiesel produced was also enhanced owing to the heightened cetane number. Thus, the current study evidently highlights the organic carbon acquisition potential of marine diatoms with the scope of providing sustainable biorefinery.

Abstract:Anaerobically treated slaughterhouse effluent is rich in nutrients, organic matter, and cause eutrophication if discharged to the environment without proper further treatment. Moreover, phosphorus and nitrogen in agro-processing industry wastewaters are mainly removed in the tertiary treatment phase. The objective of this study is to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiency of Chlorella and Scenedesmus species as well as their co-culture treating two-phase anaerobic digester effluent through microalgae biomass production. The dimensions of the rectangular photobioreactor used to conduct the experiment are 15 cm in height, 20 cm in width, and 30 cm in length. Removal efficiencies between 86.74–93.11%, 96.74–97.47%, 91.49–92.91%, 97.94–99.46%, 89.22–94.28%, and 91.08–95.31% were attained for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorous, and orthophosphate by Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture, respectively. The average biomass productivity and biomass yield of Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture were 1.4 ± 0.1, 1.17 ± 0.12, 1.5 ± 0.13 g/L, and 0.18, 0.21, and 0.23 g/L*day, respectively. The final effluent quality in terms of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous attained by Chlorella species and the co-culture were below the permissible discharge limit for slaughterhouse effluent standards in the country (Ethiopia). The results of the study showed that the use of microalgae as well as their co-culture for polishing the nutrients and residual organic matter in the anaerobically treated agro-processing industry effluent offers a promising result for wastewater remediation and biomass production. In general, Chlorella and Scenedesmus species microalgae and their co-culture can be applied as an alternative for nutrient removal from anaerobically treated slaughterhouse wastewater as well as biomass production that can be used for bioenergy.

Abstract:Growing human population demands the enhancement intensive livestock activities, which lead to severe environmental issues like water pollution. Cattle wastewater is rich in some inorganic pollutants, mainly nitrogen and phosphorous, which might constitute a risk to water bodies. Considering this scenario, microalgae's capacity to develop within manure wastewater is attracting interest, mainly for simultaneous wastewater bioremediation and biomass production. The aim of this work was evaluating the response of several microalgae strains to increasing percentages of unsterilized cattle farm wastewater. Moreover, this study also analyses the possibility of enhancing the development of indigenous native microalgal strains, to create a bioremediation system based on previously adapted species, which specific diversity was determined through taxonomic techniques. Two monospecific Chlorophyceae strains were used: Chlorella sp. and Coelastrella cogersae ; and one Cyanobacteria strain: Arthrospira platensis . Experimental assays were conducted in 6 groups and triplicates with increasing percentages of Livestock wastewater (LW): control, 15, 25, 35, 50 and 70 %. All the strains tested showed that cattle wastewater represented a source of metabolic stress for microalgae development. Nevertheless, the autochthonous microalgal bloom showed better results in terms of tolerance to wastewater percentage and development under same conditions Laboratory scale results showed that microalgae could develop with optimum results in presence of 15 % of wastewater, reaching absorbance values close to 90 % of the achieved by control cultures. Moreover, indigenous microalgae cultures were scaled up to open type industrial systems (raceways) and influence of their growth on wastewater composition was evaluated. Results showed a severe reduction of the concentration of nitrates to 43.4 (mg·L −1 ) (20 % of initial measurements). Moreover, the obtained biomass showed a biochemical profile similar to traditional crops, in terms of proteins and carbohydrates (48 and 41 % respectively), suggesting that this biomass could be further valuated into cattle feed as a circular economy approach.

Abstract:Agricultural and agro-industrial activities have risen exponentially to meet the ever-growing demand for food, energy, and other important resources. High freshwater consumption occurs in these sectors and is discharged as effluent containing excessive organic loads that require treatment. In this study, microalgal, bacterial, and fungal (yeast) isolates native to the sugar industry effluent were screened for effective chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from wastewater when co-cultured. The microalgae-bacteria consortium (MBC) comprised Chlorella sorokiniana A7 and three bacterial strains including Rhodococcus sp. B009, Bacillus sp. B010, and B013; whilst the microalgae-yeast consortium (MYC) consisted of Chlorella sorokiniana A7 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y2. When the Chlorella sorokiniana -based symbiotic systems were characterized in sugar industry wastewater, excellent COD removal efficiencies were achieved compared to the axenic Chlorella sorokiniana A7. The COD removal efficiencies were 86 %, and 71 % after 96 h of cultivation for MBC, and MYC, respectively. After 168 h of cultivation in wastewater, ≥90 % of COD removal efficiency was observed in both MBC and MYC systems. The MYC also showed improved chlorophyll- a content, photosynthesis, and respiration in Chlorella sorokiniana A7. This study has demonstrated the efficiency of Chlorella sorokiniana -based consortium systems that could be used as eco-friendly and sustainable bioremediation tools for high-strength COD wastewater streams. An insight into mechanisms of interactions between Chlorella sp., and co-cultured microbial strains grown in sugar industry wastewater still needs further studies.

Abstract:Generally wastewater such agricultural runoff is considered a nuisance; however, it could be harnessed as a potential source of nutrients like nitrates and phosphates in integrated biorefinery context. In the current study, microalgae Chlorella sp. S5 was used for bioremediation of agricultural runoff and the leftover algal biomass was used as a potential source for production of biofuels in an integrated biorefinery context. The microalgae Chlorella sp. S5 was cultivated on Blue Green (BG 11) medium and a comprehensive optimization of different parameters including phosphates, nitrates, and pH was carried out to acquire maximum algal biomass enriched with high lipids content. Dry biomass was quantified using the solvent extraction technique, while the identification of nitrates and phosphates in agricultural runoff was carried out using commercial kits. The algal extracted lipids (oils) were employed in enzymatic trans-esterification for biodiesel production using whole-cell biomass of Bacillus subtilis Q4 MZ841642. The resultant fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Subsequently, both the intact algal biomass and its lipid-depleted algal biomass were used for biogas production within a batch anaerobic digestion setup. Interestingly, Chlorella sp. S5 demonstrated a substantial reduction of 95% in nitrate and 91% in phosphate from agricultural runoff. The biodiesel derived from algal biomass exhibited a noteworthy total FAME content of 98.2%, meeting the quality standards set by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and European union (EU) standards. Furthermore, the biomethane yields obtained from whole biomass and lipid-depleted biomass were 330.34 NmL/g VS added and 364.34 NmL/g VS added , respectively. In conclusion, the findings underscore the potent utility of Chlorella sp. S5 as a multi-faceted resource, proficiently employed in a sequential cascade for treating agricultural runoff, producing biodiesel, and generating biogas within the integrated biorefinery concept.
