Abstract:BackgroundPregnancy is a period of transition with important physical and emotional changes. Even in uncomplicated pregnancies, these changes can affect the quality of life (QOL) of pregnant women, affecting both maternal and infant health. The objectives of this study were to describe the quality of life during uncomplicated pregnancy and to assess its associated socio-demographic, physical and psychological factors in developed countries.MethodsA systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Searches were made in PubMed, EMBASE and BDSP (Public Health Database). Two independent reviewers extracted the data. Countries with a human development index over 0.7 were selected. The quality of the articles was evaluated on the basis of the STROBE criteria.ResultsIn total, thirty-seven articles were included. While the physical component of QOL decreased throughout pregnancy, the mental component was stable and even showed an improvement during pregnancy. Main factors associated with better QOL were mean maternal age, primiparity, early gestational age, the absence of social and economic problems, having family and friends, doing physical exercise, feeling happiness at being pregnant and being optimistic. Main factors associated with poorer QOL were medically assisted reproduction, complications before or during pregnancy, obesity, nausea and vomiting, epigastralgia, back pain, smoking during the months prior to conception, a history of alcohol dependence, sleep difficulties, stress, anxiety, depression during pregnancy and sexual or domestic violence.ConclusionsHealth-related quality of life refers to the subjective assessment of patients regarding the physical, mental and social dimensions of well-being. Improving the quality of life of pregnant women requires better identification of their difficulties and guidance which offers assistance whenever possible.

Factors associated with oral health-related quality of life during pregnancy: a prospective observational study

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the evolution of perceived quality of life in relation to oral health during pregnancy and to determine the risk factors involved in this process. Methods: A follow-up study was carried out with pregnant Spanish women. Two oral examinations and an oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) assessment, using the OHIP-14 questionnaire, were performed in the first and third trimester of pregnancy. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, medical history, O'Sullivan Test measures, oral hygiene habits, history of caries, and periodontal status of participants were collected through structured medical-dental questionnaires. Results: A complete dataset comprising 246 pregnant women was available for analysis. Overall scores for negative impacts on the OHIP questionnaire were significantly higher during late pregnancy (74%). This indicated a deterioration in oral health-related quality of life amongst participants. Items describing "painful aching", "self-consciousness", "unsatisfactory diet", and "interrupted meals" showed the greatest increase between the first and third trimester of gestation. Multivariate analysis showed that pre-gestational/gestational diabetes mellitus and poor oral hygiene habits during the first trimester of gestation were directly associated with worse oral health-related quality of life during the third trimester of gestation (hyperglycemia: OR 2.86; 95% CI 1.019-8.050: p = 0.043 / oral hygiene: OR 1.33; 95% CI 0.970-1.836; p = 0.076). Conclusions: In the present research, hyperglycemia during pregnancy and poor oral hygiene habits during the first trimester of gestation led to a higher risk of poor oral quality of life during late pregnancy.
Profiles and associated factors of prenatal psychological symptoms and their association with health-related quality of life among pregnant women: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objectives To cluster prenatal psychological symptoms into different profiles and investigate prenatal psychological symptoms' sociodemographic, health-related and pregnancy-related factors. Furthermore, health-related quality of life was compared across prenatal psychological symptom profiles. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Obstetrics clinics of two university-affiliated, governmental, tertiary hospitals in Xi'an City, Northwestern China. Participants Between June and August 2020, 1020 pregnant women who maintained their health assessment appointments at the two research sites participated in this study. Primary and secondary outcome measures This study's primary outcome was the creation of latent profiles of prenatal psychological symptoms. These were represented by the coexisting symptoms of three common psychological disorders: depression measured using the eight-item Patient Health Questionnaire, anxiety measured using the Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 and stress measured using the Pregnancy Stress Rating Scale. Secondary outcomes included potential sociodemographic, health-related and pregnancy-related factors associated with prenatal psychological symptoms, which were measured using a researcher-designed information sheet, and health-related quality of life, measured using the 5-Level EuroQol 5-Dimension questionnaire. Results Prenatal psychological symptoms were classified into three latent profiles using latent profile analysis: low (62.9%), moderate (31.3%) and severe (5.8%). Factors associated with the severity of prenatal psychological symptoms included age, relationship with partner, relationship with mother-in-law, history of gynaecological diseases, history of dysmenorrhoea, stage of pregnancy, unplanned pregnancy, severity of vomiting symptoms and abnormal pregnancy indicators. Moreover, an inverse association was identified between the severity of prenatal psychological symptoms and health-related quality of life. Conclusions Considering the high prevalence of prenatal psychological symptoms and their adverse effects on health-related quality of life, the assessment of prenatal psychological symptoms should be integrated into prenatal healthcare and made routine practice. Investigating the relevant associated factors would be beneficial for identifying vulnerable individuals.

Effects of maternal opiate abuse on the newborn.

Abstract:Infants born to opiate-dependent women frequently have low birth weights and low 1- and 5-min Apgar scores. Significant postnatal problems, excluding neonatal withdrawal, can include jaundice, infection, aspiration pneumonia, transient tachypnea, and hyaline membrane disease. Neonatal abstinence may be severe and persist for as long as 3 months. Abstinence symptoms can include central nervous system hyperirritability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, respiratory distress, tremors, fever, high-pitched cry, increased muscle tone, uncoordinated sucking and swallowing reflexes, dehydration, and possible electrolyte imbalance. During the first week of life, increased respirations associated with hypocapnia and alkalosis may occur. The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale has been used to quantify the neurobehavioral effects on neonates of narcotics administered prenatally. A marked decline in mortality rates of infants born to opiate-dependent mothers is evident. In Philadelphia, infant morbidity has been related not only to the type of maternal narcotic dependence, but also to the amount of prenatal care. Infants whose mothers received prenatal care have been found to have higher birth weights similar to infants of control mothers. Although the newborn with intrauterine exposure to narcotic agents may appear normal at birth, the effects of the pharmacologic agent may not become apparent until later in development. To obtain a more favorable outcome for the high-risk mother and child involved in the problems of perinatal addiction, several recommendations are proposed.

Abstract:Pregnancy affects a woman's physiological and psychological state. One of the most important aspects that requires attention is the quality of life of pregnant women. The quality of life of women during this period is influenced by a number of factors, such as back and pelvic pain, physiotherapy and physical activity, and also sexual satisfaction. Eighty-five women aged 21–40 years (30.80 ± 5.05) in pregnancy trimesters participated in the study: 17 women were in the first trimester, 32 women were in the second, and 36 women in the third trimester. The World Health Organisation Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Sexual Satisfaction Scale for Women SSS-W-R15 were used to answer the research hypotheses. Respondents also provided information on questions regarding physiotherapy treatments and physical activity. Quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and disability due to back pain (ODI) showed a statistical association and relationship (p-value = 0.045, rho = − 0.22). Quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) has an association with sexual satisfaction in pregnant women (SSS-W-R15) (p-value = 0.003, rho = 0.32). The trimester of pregnancy has an effect on ODI (p-value = 0.027). A significant effect occurred in a detailed comparison between the first and third trimesters of pregnancy (p-value = 0.026). The trimester also has an impact on quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) (p-value = 0.002). In a detailed analysis, a significant effect occurred between the first and third trimesters of pregnancy (p-value = 0.001). Moreover, the trimester of pregnancy has an impact on sexual satisfaction (SSS-W-R15) (p-value = 0.027). After detailed statistical analysis, a significant effect occurred between trimesters one and three of pregnancy (p-value = 0.046). On the other hand, the number of days of physical activity performed by pregnant women per month and the type of physical activity had no effect on the ODI (p-value = 0.071). The type of physical activity performed by pregnant women also has no effect on ODI (p-value = 0.023). The number of physiotherapy treatments used has no effect on the ODI (p-value = 0.156). Type of physiotherapy treatment has no effect on ODI (p-value = 0.620). Normal pregnancy quality of life (WHOQOL) is related to ODI and sexual satisfaction (SSS-W-R15), while the trimester of pregnancy also has an impact on quality of life, disability due to back pain and sexual satisfaction.

Abstract:Objective Health-related quality of life allows the health care professionals to envisage new axes of improvement in antenatal care and is a core aspect of contemporary maternity care provision. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and explore the relationship between anxiety symptoms and health-related quality of life among Chinese pregnant women. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in a local teaching hospital in Guangzhou, China between April and June, 2018. Seven hundred and seventy Chinese pregnant women completed the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and socio-demographic questionnaires. Results 18.2% women were classified as having elevated anxiety symptoms as evidenced by a SAS score >= 50. Compared with women without anxiety symptoms, the pregnant women with anxiety symptoms had worse physical (SF36-PCS) and mental (SF36-MCS) health-related quality of life and a lower level of seven domains of SF-36 (GH, RP, BP, VT, SF, RE and MH). Elevated anxiety symptoms predicted worse physical (SF36-PCS) and mental (SF36-MCS) health-related quality of life. The third trimester predicted a lower level of physical (SF36-PCS) health-related quality of life, while an unsatisfied relationship with mother-in-law predicted a lower level of mental (SF36-MCS) health-related quality of life. Conclusions The pregnant women with anxiety symptoms had impaired health-related quality of life. Health care professionals should identify pregnant women with anxiety symptoms and facilitate their treatment, which could improve their health-related quality of life.

Abstract:Background: Physical inactivity during pregnancy has been shown to be linked to an increased risk of complications. However, during pregnancy, doubts arise about what type, intensity and frequency of physical activity are most recommended. Objective: Our main objective was to know the level of physical activity (PA) and sedentary lifestyle in a representative sample of pregnant women in Málaga, one of the most populated cities in Spain. Also, we aimed to find out the effects of PA on obstetric and perinatal outcomes and on the mental health of pregnant women, differentiated according to PA intensity and domain. Methods: Five hundred and forty full-term pregnant women who had their obstetric checks in the maternity ward of the Regional University Hospital of Málaga were recruited through consecutive sampling. Participants answered a questionnaire that included the WHO Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), the Edinburgh Depression Scale (EDS), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and some other sociodemographic and health-related questions. Subsequently, information about perinatal outcomes was obtained after birth. Results: Only 50.8% of women followed the WHO recommendations on activity. We found a high proportion of obese pregnant women and a direct effect of a sedentary lifestyle on the rate of cesarean sections and vulvovaginal tears in spontaneous births, as well as on the mental health of future mothers. Women's age, the number of children, BMI at the beginning of pregnancy and leisure time physical activity (LTPA) explained anxiety scores, and age, LTPA, BMI at the end of pregnancy and intense work-related physical activity (WTPA) predicted depression scores. Conclusions: LTPA improves obstetric outcomes, helping to reduce the rate of cesarean sections and vulvovaginal tears, as well as reducing prenatal anxiety and depression.

Abstract:Background: Pregnancy is universally considered a normal physiological process. However, it has a considerable impact on the quality of mothers' lives. This study piloted the use of the generic EuroQoL-5 Dimensions-5 Levels (EQ-5D-5L) descriptive system and the EuroQol Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) questionnaire, to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) during pregnancy and its associated factors. Methods: In this cross-sectional pilot study carried out from August to December 2019 we assessed the HRQoL and its associated factors among Moroccan pregnant women who received prenatal care at Settat's health centers. The collected data from 270 pregnant women were compared to a dataset of 289 non-pregnant women using the EQ-5D-5L instrument and socioeconomic and obstetrical questionnaires. A multiple linear regression model was used to identify associated factors. The HRQoL comparison was made using the improved RIDIT approach, which allows estimating the Absolute Risk Increase (ARI) of problems related to mobility, usual activities, and self-care and the ARI of pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression (i.e. an ARI = 10% in mobility means that pregnancy increases problems in this health dimension by 10%). Findings: A total of 559 women were included in our study. Our results showed that the HRQoL in pregnant women was significantly lower than in non-pregnant women (EQ-5D index score = 0.71 ± 0.24 vs 0.79 ± 0.29; p < 0.0001). Similarly, the pregnancy reduced the EQ-VAS score (mean difference = -7.8 ± 17.21; p < 0.0001). The pregnancy increased the problems in mobility (ARI = 9.7% [1.7-17.6], p = 0.02), in self-care (ARI = 8% [2-14], p = 0.01), and in usual activities (ARI = 27.3% [18.9-35.7], p < 0.0001). Also, the pregnancy increased pain/discomfort (ARI = 26.5% [18-35.1], p < 0.0001) and anxiety/depression (ARI = 12% [3.2-20.9], p = 0.0112). The rural pregnant women had the worst HRQoL (EQ-5D index score = 0.57) compared to their urban peers (EQ-5D index score = 0.77). Likewise, women in the third trimester and nulliparous had the worst HRQoL (EQ-5D index score = 0.64 and 0.84 respectively). Interpretation: The results highlighted that place of residence, parity, and gestational age are strongly associated with pregnant's HRQoL. The five EQ-5D-5L dimensions were affected during pregnancy. Consequently, there is a need to develop specific programs to monitor the HRQoL during pregnancy in order to ensure better maternal health care. Abstract:Background: Pregnancy is a period of physiological and hormonal alterations that can decrease the quality of life (QoL). Women's subjective perception of QoL is clinically relevant for assessing the effectiveness of interventions and identifying susceptibility to depression. Objectives: This review aims to identify, present, and critically appraise the assessment tools of QoL during pregnancy. Methods: A narrative review of the English-language literature was conducted through the PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Google Scholar electronic databases. Conclusion: Several generic instruments have been proposed, such as pregnancy-specific and disease- specific questionnaires concerning common diseases during pregnancy. Plasma, salivary and hair cortisol, inflammatory, genetic and epigenetic biomarkers and gut microbiome have also been investigated as potential indicators of maternal anxiety. Their use can quantify the association between pregnancy-specific anxiety and QoL. Application of validated assessment tools of QoL during pregnancy could improve QoL, maternal health interventions, and early identification of susceptibility to maternal depression.

Abstract:Pregnancy is a transformative time for women and their bodies, and therefore thoughts and feelings and about one's own body and internal bodily sensations may understandably change during this period. Body satisfaction and interoception have been found to influence factors such as antenatal attachment (AA) and maternal mental health. However, mixed results in the literature suggest complex relationships between the bodily experience during pregnancy and outcomes, necessitating a broader investigative approach. We aim to examine the relationship between the pregnancy bodily experience and multiple mother–infant outcomes. It is hypothesised that poor bodily experiences during pregnancy will have negative impacts on these outcomes. Cross‐sectional online survey data was collected from individuals at various gestations throughout pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study (N = 253, mean age = 32). We analysed validated measures of pregnancy body satisfaction, interoceptive sensibility, AA and mood, as well as intentions to breastfeed. Linear regressions were used to confirm findings from previous literature and a network analysis allowed for a more exploratory approach to understanding the importance of the bodily experience during pregnancy. Multiple regressions found low body satisfaction predicts higher levels of anxiety, depression and AA. A network analysis revealed relationships between body satisfaction and interoception during pregnancy and mother–infant outcomes, including depression and AA. Our results highlight the far‐reaching effects of poor bodily experiences during pregnancy on a variety of outcomes. Understanding the impact of the pregnant bodily experience can help identify at‐risk individuals and inform interventions.

The effects of nausea, vomiting, and social support on health-related quality of life during early pregnancy: A prospective cohort study

Abstract:Objective: To date, no previous study has examined the independent association between nausea, vomiting, and social support and health-related quality of life among early pregnant women. Methods: To fill this gap, we investigated these associations within this group using repeated-measurement data. Methods: A prospective cohort design was conducted from August 2018 to February 2019 with perinatal outpatients in a general hospital. Participants were 153 pregnant women aged 20 years or older and under 20 weeks of gestation at their first prenatal visit. Along with reporting their sociodemographic data, participants completed the Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (INVR), the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and re-completed INVR, and SF-12 at follow-up checkups a maximum of three times. Results: After controlling for internal correlations and confounding factors, INVR was found to be significantly negatively associated with the physical component summary scale score of SF-12; however, MSPSS showed no association with the physical component summary scale score. Conversely, the scores for both INVR and MSPSS were negatively and positively, respectively, significantly associated with the mental component summary scale score of SF-12. Conclusion: The severity of nausea and vomiting significantly impacts physical quality of life during early pregnancy. Both nausea and vomiting and social support significantly and independently affect mental quality of life. Health professionals should recognize these impacts and be aware that social support contributes to improving mental quality of life.
Self perceived health and stress in the pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had numerous maternal and neonatal consequences, especially at the mental level. Pregnant women experience a rise in anxiety symptoms and prenatal stress. Aims: The aim was to describe self-perceived health status, general stress and prenatal stress and to analyze relations and associations with sociodemographic factors. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted using non-probabilistic circumstantial sampling. The sample was recruited during the first trimester of pregnancy during the control obstetrical visit. The Google Forms platform was used. A total of 297 women participated in the study. The Prenatal Distress Questionnaire (PDQ), the Perceived Stress Score (PSS) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) were used. Results: Primiparas presented higher levels of worry about childbirth and the baby (10.93 ± 4.73) than multiparous women (9.88 ± 3.96). Somatic symptoms were present in 6% of the women. Anxiety-insomnia was scored positively by 18% of the women. In the Spearman correlation analysis, statistically significant values were found between almost all study variables. A positive correlation was observed between self-perceived health and prenatal and general stress levels. Discussion: During the first trimester of gestation, prenatal concerns increase when levels of anxiety, insomnia and depression also increase. There is a clear relationship between prenatal worries, anxiety, insomnia and depression with stress. Health education that focuses on mental health of pregnant women would help reduce worries during pregnancy and would improve the pregnant women perception of her health and well-being.

Abstract:Background: Pregnancy-related changes in women’s body shape and size predisposes to negative body image. However, the nexus between pregnancy-related body image and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is still controvertible. This study assessed the relationship between body image and HRQoL among Nigerian nulligravid, pregnant, and postpartum women.Methods: 385 women volunteered for this cross-sectional study between November 2016 and January 2017 from two selected clinics in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. Body image was assessed using the Body Attitude Questionnaire (BAQ) and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), respectively. HRQoL was assessed using the SF-12 questionnaire. Data was summarized using descriptive statistics. Inferential statistics including Chi-square test was used to test the associations between body image and HRQoL in pregnant and postpartum women. Alpha level was set at P<0.05.Results: Body attitude satisfaction and pregnancy-related women status was significantly associated with respect to abdomen (P=0.021) and genitalia (P=0.005). Postpartum women were most satisfied with their abdomen (95.2%). There was significant correlation between BAQ score and health perception (P=0.001), emotional functioning (P=0.001), and mental health (P=0.040) scales of the SF-12. There was significant correlation between BSQ score and bodily pain (P=0.020), health perception (P=0.001),and emotional functioning (P=0.003) scales of the SF-12.Conclusions: Postpartum women had better body attitude and body shape perception than their pregnant and non-pregnant counterparts. Body attitude is related to HRQoL in non-pregnant, pregnant and postpartum women. Psychometric analysis and validation of the SF‐34 PREG: An adaptation of the SF‐36 for assessing quality of life in pregnant women

Abstract:Objective This study aims to perform a psychometric analysis of the 36‐item short form health survey (SF‐36) in a population of pregnant women and validate an adapted version of the instrument to measure health‐related quality of life specific to pregnancy. Methods A cross‐sectional study design was carried out with data collection between 7 and 36 weeks of gestation, with a total sample of 547 pregnant women divided into two randomized subsamples. Data were collected between September 2021 and April 2023. An exploratory factor analysis was initially performed on one subsample, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis on the other. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega, and correlations between factors were analyzed. Results Results from the exploratory factor analysis proposed a seven‐factor model explaining 56% of the variance. All proposed dimensions achieved Cronbach's alpha scores above 0.75, with a total test score of 0.92. Furthermore, all dimensions exhibited positive and statistically significant correlations. Bartlett's test of sphericity and the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test yielded values of 5599 (P 0.90, and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) <0.06. Conclusion This study developed and validated the "SF‐34 PREG," an adapted version of the SF‐36, specifically designed for pregnant women. The SF‐34 PREG demonstrated high reliability and a robust factorial structure, making it a more precise and relevant tool for assessing health‐related quality of life during pregnancy. Although it does not include the social functioning dimension of the original SF‐36, the SF‐34 PREG offers improved relevance and accuracy for this specific population. Further research and clinical use of the SF‐34 PREG are recommended.

The current study assessed the association between social support and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as well as the mediating role of social support in the linkage between perceived stress and HRQoL among pregnant Australian women.

Abstract:Introduction: This study was conducted with the aim of creatingp a model of pregnant women's quality of life and self-care behaviors based on health literacy and mindfulness mediated by a health-oriented lifestyle. Method: The present study was a descriptive- correlative study. The study population was pregnant women who were admitted to the comprehensive health centers of the city of Bojnord in the last three months of 2019, of whom 240 pregnant women were voluntarily selected according to the available sampling method. The instruments used for data collection were the Maternal Health Literacy Questionnaire, Mindfulness Scale, Short Quality of Life Scale, World Health Organization Short Scale, Self-care in Pregnancyand Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire. The data was analyzed and structured using SPSS24 and Lisrel softwares and structural equation method. Results: The age of the participants was between 18-35 years. The independent variables " health literacy during pregnancy” and “mindfulness” and the mediating variable “health-oriented lifestyle” predicted 42% of the changes in self-care and 61% of the changes in quality of life. The indirect effects of health literacy during pregnancy on quality of life (0.52), pregnancy health literacy during pregnancy on self-care (0.50) mindfulness on quality of life (0.49), and mindfulness on self-care (0.47) were also significant due to health-oriented lifestyle (P<0.05). Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of life and self-care behavior of pregnant women, it is suggested that in addition to health literacy and mindfulness during pregnancy, attention should also be paid to a health-oriented lifestyle and its development in pregnant women.
Associations of physical activity, sedentary time, and physical fitness with mental health during pregnancy: The GESTAFIT project

Abstract:Purpose: This study was aimed to analyze the associations of objectively measured physical activity (PA), sedentary time, and physical fitness with mental health in the early second trimester (16 ± 2 gestational weeks) of pregnancy. Methods: From 229 women initially contacted, 124 pregnant women participated in the present cross-sectional study. Data were collected between November 2015 and March 2017. The participants wore Actigraph GT3X+ Triaxial accelerometers for 9 consecutive days to objectively measure their PA levels and sedentary time. A performance-based test battery was used to measure physical fitness. Self-report questionnaires assessed psychological ill-being (i.e., negative affect, anxiety, and depression), and psychological well-being (i.e., emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive affect). Linear regression analyses were adjusted for age, educational level, accelerometer wear time, miscarriages, and low back pain. Results: Moderate-to-vigorous PA was negatively associated with depression (β = -0.222, adjusted R2 = 0.050, p = 0.041). Higher levels of sedentary time were negatively associated with positive affect (β = -0.260, adjusted R2 = 0.085, p = 0.017). Greater upper-body flexibility was positively associated with better emotional regulation (β = 0.195, adjusted R2= 0.030, p = 0.047). The remaining associations were not significant (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: An active lifestyle characterized by higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous PA and lower levels of sedentary time during pregnancy might modestly improve the mental health of pregnant women. Although previous research has focused on the benefits of cardiorespiratory exercise, the present study shows that only upper-body flexibility is related to emotional regulation in early pregnant women. If the present findings are corroborated in further experimental research, physical exercise programs should focus on enhancing flexibility to promote improvements in emotional regulation during early second-trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract:Clinical Nursing Research, Ahead of Print. Prenatal depression is highly prevalent, but its relationship with the multidimensional burden of physical symptoms during pregnancy remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between pregnancy-related physical symptom burden, including frequency, severity, and impact on life and pregnancy adaptation to prenatal depression, and to identify predictors of depression during pregnancy. The study was cross-sectional in design. A hospital-based setting providing comprehensive maternity care services from outpatient to inpatient. The sample consisted of two hundred forty-three pregnant individuals aged 20 and above with no major obstetrical complications. Structured questionnaires including demographic and obstetrical characteristics, depression, symptom burden, and pregnancy adaptation were used for data collection. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify significant predictors of depression. The study revealed that approximately 32% of the variance in depression scores could be explained by the combined effects of pregnancy-related physical symptom burden and pregnancy adaptation. Specifically, low-level pregnancy adaptation, high-level symptom impact on life, unmarried status, and mid-level symptom severity were identified as the main predictors of prenatal depression among low-risk pregnant individuals. The findings contribute to the existing knowledge base, emphasizing the significance of addressing and managing pregnancy-related physical symptom burden while promoting effective adaptation to pregnancy as a means to mitigate the risk of prenatal depression.

Abstract:Background Quality of life is closely related to sociodemographic and environmental factors, living conditions and social relationships. Pregnancy is a period of adaptations and physical and emotional changes for women, which can affect their quality of life, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, when most of the physical changes occur and delivery is approaching. The evaluation of this health indicator is important so that the physiotherapist can know where to act and what to offer for the health of the pregnant woman. Objectives To describe the quality of life of pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Methods This work comprises preliminary data from a cross-sectional observational study, with a sample composed of 24 women in the third trimester of normal-risk pregnancy, with a mean age of 29.33±3.897 years and who had lower limb edema. Quality of life was assessed using the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index, adapted for pregnant women by Fernandes, Narchi and Cianciarullo. This instrument consists of 36 items divided into four domains, namely: health and functioning (16 items); family (4 items); social and economic (9 items); and psychological/spiritual (7 items). The score can vary between 0 and 30 points, with higher scores indicating better quality of life. Results The sample was characterized by being mostly married (79.2%), primiparous (70.8%), with planned pregnancy (47.1%) and complaint of lower limb edema (100%). The mean score for overall quality of life was 21.70±3.627, with a minimum score of 14.79 and a maximum score of 28.76. Only one of the pregnant women scored less than 15 points in quality of life, showing that most have a quality of life ranging from fair to good. The family domain obtained the highest average score (25.37±3.59), followed by the psychological/spiritual (23.25±4.56) and social/economic (22.30±4.00) domains. Health and functioning had the lowest score among the four (19.07±4.34), which points to how much physical changes during pregnancy can affect quality of life in the third trimester. Another piece of data that corroborates this observation is that item 7 (energy for everyday activities), within that same domain, had the lowest score in the sample. Conclusion For the characteristics of this preliminary sample of pregnant women in the third trimester, it was observed that pregnancy had a low impact on quality of life in general, with a greater decline in the health and functioning domain. It is necessary to expand the sample and correlate these data with their sociodemographic characteristics. Implications The results demonstrate the importance of the physiotherapist in relieving the physical symptoms of women in the third trimester of pregnancy, in order to increase their quality of life, and to guarantee that this period is lived in the best possible way.
