Abstract:Excessive reliance on chemical fertilizer (CF) in conventional farming is a serious concern owing to its negative effects on soil health, the environment, and crop productivity. Organic manure is an alternative source of fertilizer to reduce the amount of CF usage in agriculture, decrease environmental pollution, and ensure sustainable crop production. This study assessed the integrated effect of poultry manure (PM) and cattle manure (CM) with CF on soil properties, plant physiology, and rice grain yield. Additionally, the difference in pre-and post-anthesis dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) accumulation and their relationship with grain yield was also determined. Pot experiments were performed in the early and late growing season at the experimental station of Guangxi University, China, in 2018. A total of six treatments, i.e., T1—CF0; T2−100% CF; T3−60% CM + 40% CF; T4−30% CM + 70% CF; T5−60% PM + 40% CF, and T6−30% PM + 70% CF were used in this pot experiment. Results showed that T6 enhanced leaf photosynthetic efficiency by 11% and 16%, chlorophyll content by 8% and 11%, panicle number by 12% and 16%, and grain yield by 11% and 15% in the early and late seasons, respectively, compared to T2. Similarly1, post-anthesis N and DM accumulation, N uptake, and soil properties (i.e., soil organic carbon, total N, and bulk density) were improved with integrated CF and manure treatments over the sole CF treatments. Interestingly, increases in post-anthesis N uptake and DM production were further supported by enhanced N-metabolizing enzyme activities (i.e., nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase, and glutamate oxoglutarate aminotransferase during the grain-filling period in combined treatments. In-addition, the linear regression analysis showed that post-anthesis DM (R2 = 0.95) and N (R2 = 0.96) accumulation were highly associated with grain yield of rice. Thus, the combination of 30% N from PM or CM with 70% N from CF (i.e., urea) is a promising option for improvement of soil quality and rice grain yield. Furthermore, our study provides a sustainable nutrient management plan to increase rice yield with high N use efficiency.

Abstract:The combined use of organic manure and chemical fertilizer (CF) is considered to be a good method for sustaining high crop yields and improving soil quality. We performed a field experiment in 2019 at the research station of Guanxi University, to investigate the effects of cattle manure (CM) and poultry manure (PM) combined with CF on soil physical and biochemical properties, rice dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) accumulation and grain yield. We also evaluated differences in pre-and post-anthesis DM and N accumulation and their contributions to grain yield. The experiment consisted of six treatments: no N fertilizer (T1), 100% CF (T2), 60% CM + 40% CF (T3), 30% CM + 70% CF (T4), 60% PM + 40% CF (T5), and 30% PM + 70% CF (T6). All CF and organic manure treatments provided a total N of 150 kg ha-1. Results showed that the treatment T6 increased leaf net photosynthetic rate (Pn) by 11% and 13%, chlorophyll content by 13% and 15%, total biomass by 9% and 11% and grain yield by 11% and 17% in the early and late season, respectively, compared with T2. Similarly, the integrated manure and CF treatments improved post-antheis DM accumulation and soil properties, such as bulk density, organic carbon, total N, microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) relative to the CF-only treatments. Interestingly, increases in post-anthesis DM and N accumulation were further supported by enhanced leaf Pn and activity of N-metabolizing enzyme during the grain-filling period. Improvement in Pn and N-metabolizing enzyme activity were due to mainly improved soil quality in the combined manure and synthetic fertilizer treatments. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed a strong relationship between grain yield and soil properties, and a stronger relationship was noted with soil MBC and MBN. Conclusively, a combination of 30% N from PM or CM with 70% N from CF is a promising option for improving soil quality and rice yield.

Abstract:Abstract Organic fertilizers are widely used in agriculture production and change the soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents, thus improving crop production. The increased amount of soil C and N exhibit a greater potential to improve the leaf physiological activity, yields and grain quality of rice by improving soil fertility indices. To understand the relationship between soil C and N contents with leaf physiological activity and grain quality; organic fertilizers (i.e., cattle manure (CM) and poultry manure (PM)) coupled with chemical fertilizer (CF) was applied at the different proportion. The recommended rate of N 150 (kg ha −1 ) was provided from manure and CF using six treatments, i.e., T 1 — CF 0 ; T 2 —100% CF; T 3 —60% CM + 40% CF; T 4 —30% CM + 70%CF; T 5 —60% PM + 40% CF, and T 6 —30% PM + 70% CF. Results showed that soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), leaf net photosynthetic rate ( Pn ), SPAD values, grain yield and grain quality attributes were significantly increased with combined organic and inorganic fertilizer application. Averaged over the years, T 6 treatment significantly improved SOC, TN, Pn , starch content (SC), amylose content (AC), and grain yield by 16%, 12%, 9%, 7%, 12%, and 24%, respectively, compared to CF-only. However, no significant differences among T 4 and T 6 were observed for studied parameters. In addition, the linear regression exhibited that SOC (R 2 = 0.70** & R 2 =0.50*) and TN (R 2 = 0.62* & R 2 =0.58*) were positively correlated with grain SC and AC, respectively. Likewise, Pn (R 2 = 0.51* & R 2 =0.62*) were also positively associated with SC and AC, respectively. The correlation analysis showed that improving SOC and TN played a key role in enhancing leaf physiological activity and grain nutritional quality. Thus, the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers at a 30:70 ratio is a promising option for the improvement of soil fertility and grain yield of rice as well as grain nutritional traits.

Abstract:Conventional farming systems are highly reliant on chemical fertilizers (CFs), which adversely affect soil quality, crop production and the environment. One of the major current challenges of current agriculture is finding ways to increase soil health and crop yield sustainably. Manure application as a substitute for CF is an alternative fertilization strategy for maintaining soil health and biodiversity. However, little is known about the complex response of soil bacterial communities and soil nutrients to manure and CFs application. This study reports the response of soil nutrients, rice yield, and soil microbial community structure to 2 years of continuous manure and CFs application. The study consisted of six treatments: no N fertilizer control (Neg-Con); 100% CF (Pos-Con); 60% cattle manure (CM) + 40% CF (High-CM); 30% CM + 70% CF (Low-CM); 60% poultry manure (PM) + 40% CF (High-PM), and 30% PM + 70% CF (Low-PM). We used high-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicons to characterize the soil bacterial communities. Results revealed that the addition of manure significantly altered the soil bacterial community composition and structure; and enhanced the relative abundance of phyla Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, and Planctomycetes. Organic fertilizer treatments, particularly high CM and PM had the highest measured soil bacterial diversity of all treatments. Similarly, integrated application of manure and CFs increased the soil biochemical traits [i.e., pH, total N (TN), soil organic C (SOC), microbial biomass N (MBN), and microbial biomass C (MBC)] and rice grain yield. Average increases in SOC, TN, MBN, and MBC were 43.66, 31.57, 24.34, and 49.45%, respectively, over the years in the High-PM compared with Pos-Con. Redundancy analysis showed that the dominant bacteria phyla were correlated with soil pH, SOC, TN, and microbial biomass, but the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was strongly correlated with environmental factors such as soil pH, SOC, TN, and MBC. We employed a structural equation model to examine the relationship between microbial biomass, soil nutrients and grain yield among treatments. This analysis supported the hypothesis that soil nutrient content and availability directly affect rice grain yield while soil bacteria indirectly affect grain yield through microbial biomass production and nutrient levels. Overall, the findings of this research suggest that the integrated application of CF and manure is a better approach for improving soil health and rice yield.

Abstract:Current farming systems are highly reliant on chemical fertilizers (CF), which negatively affect soil health, the environment, and crop productivity. Substituting organic fertilizer for chemical fertilizer (CF) is an important agricultural practice that improves soil health and crop productivity and is eco-friendly. To explore the effects of organic fertilizer in the form of cattle manure (CM) or poultry manure (PM) combined with CF on soil properties, leaf physiological traits, and grain physiochemical characteristics of rice, a 2-year field experiment was conducted in a dual cropping system with six treatments: Neg-CF (no N fertilizer control), Pos-CF (100% CF), High-CM (60% CM + 40% CF), Low-CM (30% CM + 70% CF), High-PM (60% PM + 40% CF), and Low-PM (30% PM + 70% CF). The results exhibited that the adding of organic manure significantly improved soil chemical traits such as soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), and available N (AN). Similarly, applying the combined fertilizer led to significant increases in the leaf net photosynthetic rate (Pn), SPAD values, and rice grain nutritional and cooking characteristics according to Rapid Visco-Analyzer (RVA) profile. Average increases in SOC, TN, Pn, starch content (SC), and amylose content (AC) were 16%, 12%, 9%, 7%, 9%, and 12%, respectively, across the year in the Low-PM compared to the Pos-CF treatment. Moreover, the manure amendments significantly altered the RVA profile attributes, including peak viscosity, tough viscosity, final viscosity, and the setback and pasting temperatures compared to Pos-CF. Linear regression analysis revealed that SOC and TN were positively associated with leaf Pn and SPAD values. Further, leaf Pn and SPAD were positively correlated with rice grain SC and AC. The correlation heat map analyses revealed a positive correlation in the RVA profile between the soil properties and leaf physiological traits. These correlation analyses showed that the increase in soil chemical traits and leaf physiological activities played a significant role in higher rice grain nutritional and cooking quality. Overall, the findings of this study show that the integrated use of organic fertilizers and CF in rice fields enhances soil functionality and the quality of rice on a sustainable basis.

Abstract:The challenge of reducing the environmental contamination related to agricultural practices to improve nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE), carbon (C) sequestration, and crop yield, requires efficient N fertilization and management strategies. We carried out a field experiment from 2016 to 2018 exploring the effect of the gradual replacement of mineral N with organic manure N on soil properties, soil organic C storage, soil total N storage, rice grain yield and yield components, N uptake and C accumulation of rice, and NUE. Moreover, we explained the relationship among the proportions of manure added to fertilizers, soil properties, rice grain yield and yield components, and aboveground N uptake and C accumulation of rice after harvest. Compared to mineral fertilization, 50% manure improved NUE and increased the effective panicle, seed setting rate, grain yield, and straw yield. However, in comparison to mineral fertilization, 100% manure decreased the effective panicle, the number of spikelets per panicle, grain yield, and straw yield and decreased partial factor productivity (PFP), N agronomic efficiency (AEN), and N recovery efficiency (REN). Moreover, in comparison with mineral fertilization, 50% manure increased the aboveground N uptake and C accumulation of rice, decreased the N surplus by 61.5%, and increased the apparent accumulated N recovery efficiency by 10.7%. In comparison to mineral fertilization, manure percentages exceeding 25% increased the total and available N, phosphorus, potassium, and organic C contents in soil. According to redundancy analysis, aboveground C accumulation and N uptake of rice jointly contributed to the variation in grain yields and yield components by 27.9%. In conclusion, 50% manure is a promising ecologically friendly strategy that improves the grain yield, N uptake, C sequestration, and NUE of rice and improves soil fertility. Simultaneously, 50% manure decreases the risk of environmental contamination.

Study on the Effects of Reducing Nitrogen Fertilizer: Stabilizing Yield and Carbon Sequestration by Synergistic Utilization of Chinese Milk Vetch and Rice Straw in Double-Cropping Rice Area

Abstract:The excessive application of chemical fertilizers in rice fields exacerbates soil degradation and poses a threat to food security. Achieving an increase in rice production and minimizing environmental costs are inevitable requirements for achieving sustainable rice production. The synergistic utilization of rice straw (RS) and Chinese milk vetch (MV) is a sustainable measure to improve soil quality in Southern China. How this management strategy impacts agricultural productivity and soil carbon (C) sequestration under different fertilization conditions is unclear. Several treatments, including only chemical fertilizer (F), F + MV (FM), F + RS (FS), and F + MV + RS (FMS) under a standard rate of nitrogen (N100) and 40% reduced nitrogen (N60) levels were designed to explore changes in rice yields and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations, stocks, and soil labile organic C fractions (permanganate oxidizable C) during 2018–2020 in a double-rice-cropping system. The results show that the FMS treatment reduced soil bulk density to alleviate soil compaction and improved the soil carbon management index. The synergistic utilization of MV and RS replacing 40% of the chemical N fertilizer could still maintain the rice yield. Compared to the F treatment, the average annual grain yield was significantly increased by 9.82% and 5.84% in the FMS treatment; SOC concentration was increased by 16.05% and 19.98% on average (p < 0.05), and SOC stock was increased by 1.78 Mg C ha−1 and 2.37 Mg C ha−1 under the N60 and N100 levels, respectively. The random forest regression model and correlation analysis demonstrated that the inputs of chemical N, organic N and C, and appropriate C/N ratio promoted soil C accumulation. Furthermore, the structural equation model analysis exhibited that the C input affects the highly labile organic carbon (HLOC) and total labile organic carbon (LOC); the HLOC had a positive effect on SOC (p < 0.05). N input had a significant effect on LOC and yield. Our results suggest that the synergistic utilization of MV and RS plays an important role in ensuring stable grain production, improving soil C sequestration capacity, and maintaining soil environmental health in Southern China.

Abstract:Substituting chemical fertilizers with manure is an important method for efficient nutrient management in rice cropping systems of China. Labile nitrogen (N) is the most active component of the soil N pool and plays an essential role in soil fertility. However, the effects of manure substitution on soil labile N in rice cropping systems and their relationships with soil properties, fertilization practices, and climatic conditions remain unclear and should be systematically quantified. Here, we investigated rice grain yield and four types of soil labile N that have been widely reported, including available nitrogen (AN), ammonium nitrogen (NH+4-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO-3-N), and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN). We reviewed 187 published articles and performed a meta-analysis to quantify the effects of manure substitution on yield and soil labile N. The results showed that manure substitution increased AN, MBN, NH+4-N, and NO-3-N by 11.3%, 38.5%, 5.9%, and 8.1%, respectively. Partial substitution significantly increased the yield by 1.4%–5.9%, but full substitution significantly decreased the yield by 2.9%. The positive effects of manure substitution on yield and AN were stronger with long-term fertilization. The differences in responses varied across specific manure types, N application rates, soil properties, and climatic factors. In conclusion, manure substitution can increase soil labile N and is regarded as an efficient strategy for improving soil N fertility and a recommended measure for applying both chemical and organic fertilizers in rice systems. This study provides evidence of the effects of manure substitution on yield enhancement by increasing soil labile N.
Higher Yield Sustainability and Soil Quality by Manure Amendment Than Straw Returning under a Single-Rice Cropping System

Abstract:Context: Combined application of chemical fertilizers with organic amendments has been shown to improve soil fertility and agronomic performance of rice.Research question: The responses of sustainable rice production and soil quality to long-term different fertilization regimes have not been widely discussed. What is the effect on rice yield and soil quality under different fertilization management practices?Methods: A ten-year field trial was performed to systematic evaluation the impact of different fertilization regimes [no fertilized (control), chemical fertilizers alone (NPK), NPK along with cattle manure application (NPK+m), NPK along with rice straw return (NPK+s)] on rice grain yield, yield sustainability, and soil quality. A total of twenty soil indicators in two-layer soil depth (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) were determined, including soil physical, chemical and biological indicators.Results: The NPK+m produced higher averaged rice grain yield, increased by 11.6% and 4.3% for rice cultivar LYP9, 10.5% and 7.6% for cultivar YY12, respectively, compared to the NPK and NPK+s treatments. In addition, sustainable yield index (SYI) was the highest for both rice cultivars in the NPK+m treatment. However, the relative rice grain yield (NPK+s/NPK) against time showed a significant (P < 0.05) downward trend for LYP9. Soil total organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the surface soil significantly increased by 10.5-17.6% when NPK applied along with cattle manure or rice straw over time. The NPK+m had significantly higher soil P, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Zn contents in both soil depths than the other fertilization practices. However, no differences in K contents were observed among fertilization treatments, which decreased by half compared with the initial value. The random forest model analysis showed that available P, K and soil acid phosphatase had greater impacts on rice grain yield than did the other parameters. Soil quality index (SQI) value calculated by the minimum data set method were the highest in the NPK+m. A significantly positive correlation between the SQI and SYI (y = 0.52x + 0.4, R2 = 0.4, P < 0.05), indicating that SQI was an important factor contribution to sustainable rice production. Conclusions: The NPK+m had more stable rice production and higher soil quality index than the NPK+s and NPK alone treatments. Significance: High and sustainable rice yields could be achieved by combined application of cattle manure and chemical fertilizers.
Effect of substituting nitrogen fertilizer with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria on yield in a double-rice cropping system in southern China

Abstract:The efficient use of nitrogen fertilizer to increase rice production is essential for food security in China. However, the high-input of chemical nitrogen fertilizer has also resulted in soil N losses and environmental pollution. Here we investigated the possibility of using biofertilizer to reduce nitrogen fertilizer use via partial substitution of chemical nitrogen fertilizer (NF) with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) in red soil. The effects of 100% NF (N10C0) and different substitution rates of NF with NFC (70%, 50%, 30%, and 0% NF plus 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100% N obtained through NFC, labeled as N7C3, N5C5, N3C7, and N0C10, respectively) on rice yield and soil properties were assessed in a double-rice system in greenhouse (six treatments) and field experiments (four treatments) from 2018 to 2019. The N10C0 and N7C3 treatments had no significant effect on grain and straw yields and the nutrient uptake in the greenhouse experiment. The higher substitution treatments could not sustain stable rice yields and the nutrient uptake in either greenhouse or field experiments, which indicated that 30% substitution was appropriate to sustain rice yields. For rice growth traits, higher substitution rates (70–100%) significantly decreased the number of tillers/plant and panicles/plant. In general, soil TN and TP contents in the 0–15 cm layer increased with increasing substitution rate during the early and late rice seasons. Compared to the N7C3 and N5C5 treatments, there were no significant differences in NH4+-N and NO3−-N contents under the N10C0 treatment. Compared to the application of NF as the sole nitrogen source, 30% substitution with NFC could result in monetary savings of approximately 5.77 US$ ha−1. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that substituting NF with an appropriate amount of NFC is beneficial for improving the productivity and sustainability of paddy fields under the double-rice cropping system.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization losses result in low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and various environmental impacts in agroecosystems. Machine-transplanted rice with side-deep fertilization (MRSF) has been recommended as an effective alternative to traditional transplantation with manual broadcasting of fertilizer. Controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer (CRF) can enhance rice yield and NUE in paddy fields. However, there is scarce information about combined effects of MRSF and CRF on NH 3 volatilization loss and rice grain yield, NUE, net economic benefit (NEB) in a double rice cropping system. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of MRSF with CRF on grain yields, NUE and economic returns of early rice and late rice from 2019 to 2021, as well as NH 3 emissions in two rice seasons (2019 and 2021). Six treatments were designed as no N fertilizer (N0), compound fertilizer broadcasting (CFB), compound fertilizer side-deep placement (CFD), CRF broadcasting (CRFB), CRF side-deep placement (CRFD1), and single side-deep placement of CRF (CRFD2). The results showed that the CFD and CRFB treatments decreased NH 3 volatilization while enhancing or maintaining rice yield and NUE compared to the CFB treatment. MRSF with CRF (CRFD1 and CRFD2) significantly reduced NH 3 emissions of early and late rice by 57.6–67.9% and 62.2–80.9% by decreasing the NH 4 + –N concentrations in the surface water compared to the CFB treatment, respectively. Rice grain yields in the MRSF with CRF treatments increased by 3.9–17.3% in early rice and 5.4–21.6% in late rice relative to the CFB treatment. In addition, MRSF with CRF treatments improved NUE for early and late rice from 32.1 to 36.2% and 21.3–28.4% in the CFB treatment to 48.4–61.2% and 39.7–62.3%, respectively. The yield-scale NH 3 volatilization losses were reduced under the MRSF with CRF treatments by 61.2–71.5% in early rice and 67.4–84.3% in late rice. Furthermore, MRSF with single basal application of CRF reduced time-consuming and labor-intensive while increasing rice yields and net economic benefits. Overall, co-application of MRSF and CRF can reduce NH 3 emissions, and improve rice yield, NUE and profitability in double rice cropping systems.

Abstract:A major challenge in modern rice production is to achieve the dual goals of high yield and good quality with low environmental costs. This study was designed to determine whether optimized nitrogen (N) fertilization could fulfill these multiple goals. In two-year experiments, two high yielding 'super' rice cultivars were grown with different N fertilization management regimes, including zero N input, local farmers' practice (LFP) with heavy N inputs, and optimized N fertilization (ONF). In ONF, by reducing N input, increasing planting density, and optimizing the ratio of urea application at different stages, N use efficiency and the physicochemical and textural properties of milled rice were improved at higher yield levels. Compared with LFP, yield and partial factor productivity of applied N (PFP) under ONF were increased (on average) by 1.70 and 13.06%, respectively. ONF increased starch and amylose content, and significantly decreased protein content. The contents of the short chains of A chain (degree of polymerization (DP) 6–12) and B1 chain (DP 13–25) of amylopectin were significantly increased under ONF, which resulted in a decrease in the stability of rice starch crystals. ONF increased viscosity values and improved the thermodynamic properties of starch, which resulted in better eating and cooking quality of the rice. Thus, ONF could substantially compensate the negative effects caused by N fertilizer and achieve the multiple goals of higher grain quality and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) at high yield levels. These results will be useful for applications of high quality rice production at high yield levels.

Abstract:Background Integrating a chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer with an organic fertilizer and using slow-release mechanism are important N management strategies to increase the N utilization efficiency (NUE) and grain yield of rice. However, the performances of both N management strategies on the productivity, the nutrient absorption and utilization efficiency, and the economic benefits of rice have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. Methods A 2-year field experiment was conducted with seven N management strategies without fertilizer (control), 100% conventional N fertilizer (conventional compound fertilizer and urea) (N 100 ), 75% conventional N fertilizer with 25% organic–inorganic compound fertilizer (N 75 +OICF 25 ), 50% conventional N fertilizer with 50% organic–inorganic compound fertilizer (N 50 +OICF 50 ), 100% organic–inorganic compound fertilizer (OICF 100 ), slow-release compound fertilizer with urea (SRCF+U), compound fertilizer with sulfur-coated urea (CF+SCU). The responses of the productivity, the nutrient absorption and utilization efficiency, and the economic benefits of rice to the different N management strategies were evaluated. Results CF+SCU performed comparably or better than N 100 , judging by the grain yield (GY), the N, phosphate (P) and potassium (K) agronomic efficiency (NAE, PAE and KAE), and the apparent N, P and K recovery efficiency (ANRE, APRE and AKRE). SRCF+U significantly increased the GY by an average of 7.7%, the NAE and the ANRE by 23.8 and 26.7%, the PAE and the APRE by 90.6 and 109.3%, and the KAE and the AKRE by 74.2 and 57.7%. The higher GY and nutrient utilization efficiency when using SRCF+U were attributed to the higher total biomass and total nutrient absorption. N 75 +OICF 25 and N 50 +OICF 50 produced a comparable grain yield than N 100 , whereas a significant yield reduction was observed when using OICF 100 . Compared with N 100 , N 75 +OICF 25 resulted in a comparable or higher fertilizer use efficiency (0.3 and 4.7% for NAE and ANRE, 0.3 and 3.2% for PAE and APRE, 0.3 and −2.8% for KAE and AKRE). However, the fertilizer use efficiency when using N 50 +OICF 50 and OICF 100 were lower than with N 100 . The highest net return (NR) (5,845.03 yuan ha −1 ) and benefit to cost (B:C) ratio (0.34) were obtained when using SRCF+U. The NR and the B:C ratio when using N 75 +OICF 25 were slightly higher than when using N 100. However, N 50 +OICF 50 and OICF 100 significantly decreased the NR and the B:C ratio compared with N 100 by 14.5 and 12.1% and by 35.1 and 29.0%, respectively. Conclusions SRCF+U and CF+SCU enhanced the crop productivity, the nutrient uptake and utilization efficiency, and the economic benefits compared with N 100. The comprehensive performance of SRCF+U was better than that of CF+SCU. N 75 +OICF 25 produced almost similar productivity, nutrient uptake and use efficiency compared with N 100 . It demonstrated that N 75 +OICF 25 stabilized the grain yield production of rice and reduced the input of chemical N fertilizer.

Abstract:Fertilization plays a crucial role in ensuring global food security and ecological balance. This study investigated the impact of substituting innovative biological manure for chemical fertilization on rice (Oryza sativa L) productivity and soil biochemical properties based on a three-year experiment. Our results suggested rice yield and straw weight were increased under manure addition treatment. Specifically, 70% of total nitrogen (N) fertilizer substituted by biological manure derived from straw, animal waste and microbiome, led to a substantial 13.6% increase in rice yield and a remarkable 34.2% boost in straw weight. In comparison to the conventional local farmer practice of applying 165 kg N ha-1, adopting 70% of total N plus biological manure demonstrated superior outcomes, particularly in enhancing yield components and spike morphology. Fertilization treatments led to elevated levels of soil microbial biomass carbon and N. However, a nuanced comparison with local practices indicated that applying biological manure alongside urea resulted in a slight reduction in N content in vegetative and economic organs, along with decreases of 10.4%, 11.2%, and 6.1% in N recovery efficiency (NRE), respectively. Prudent N management through the judicious application of partial biological manure fertilizer in rice systems could be imperative for sustaining productivity and soil fertility in southern China.

Abstract:Chemical fertilizer (CF) is necessary for optimal growth and grain production in rice farming. However, the continuous application of synthetic substances has adverse effects on the natural environment. Amending synthetic fertilizer with plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an alternate option to reduce CF usage. In this study, a field trial was undertaken in southern Taiwan. We aimed to investigate the effects of reducing CF, either partially or completely, with PGPR on the vegetative growth, biomass production, and grain yield of rice plants cultivated under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) cultivation. In addition, we aimed to determine an optimal reduction in CF dose when incorporated with PGPR for application in rice cultivation under AWD. The trial consisted of four treatments, namely, 0% CF + 100% PGPR (FP1), 25% CF + 75% PGPR (FP2) 50% CF + 50% PGPR (FP3), and 100% CF + 0% PGPR (CONT). A randomized complete blocked design (RCBD) with three replicates was used. A reduction in CF by 25–50% with the difference compensated by PGPR significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influenced the crops biomass production. This improved the percentage of filled grains (PFG), and the thousand-grain weight (1000-GW) of treated plants by 4–5%. These improvements in growth and yield components eventually increased the grain yield production by 14%. It is concluded that partial replacement of CF with PGPR could be a viable approach to reduce the use of CF in existing rice cultivation systems. Furthermore, the approach has potential as a sustainable technique for rice cultivation.

Abstract:During th logarithmic phase of growth of the myxobacterium Myxococcus fulvus the specific carotenoid content and the molar ratio of the two main carotenoids keto-torulene (3',4'-didehydro-beta,psi-caroten-4-one, 15%) and myxobacton ester (1'-glucosyloxy-3',4'-didehydro-1',2'-dihydro-beta,psi-caroten-4-one ester, 80%) are highly constant. When the formation of these carotenoids was prevented by an inhibitory block at the level of phytoene desaturation, the normal specific content is rapidly reached after release of this block by a two-three-fold enhanced rate of synthesis. The experimentally accumulated phytoene molecules however, are not used as a precursor pool for the formation of the coloured carotenoids. The absolute amount of phytoene does not decrease, although a considerable molecule exchange between this pool and the pathway occurs. Furthermore, experimentally accumulated lycopene is only converted into myxobacton ester when the carotenogenic pathway is blocked at an earlier step, at the level of phytoene desaturation. Without this blockage the lycopene pool remains unaffected. The results are discussed in terms of arrangement of the carotenogenic enzymes in a sort of assembly line in association with the cytoplasmic membrane. Four sites of control are suggested in this pathway.
Optimizing Nitrogen Fertilization Managements Under Mechanical Deep Placement for Raising Rice Grain Yield

Abstract:It is not known whether both reducing tiller-fertilizer and increasing panicle-fertilizer can significantly increase grain yield under mechanical deep placement. The two-year field experiment was conducted to access the effects of optimal nitrogen fertilization including reducing tiller-fertilizer, increasing panicle-fertilizer, with the method of mechanical deep placement on grain yield and its physiological traits of rice, in 2019 and 2020. The experimental materials were selected with hybrid rice Wufengyou615 ( WFY615 ) and inbred rice Yuxiangyouzhan ( YXYZ ). There were six experiment treatments, i.e., no any fertilization (H1); traditional surface broadcast fertilization (SB) (90 kg N ha −1 as basal fertilization (BF) and 60 kg N ha −1 as tillering fertilizer (TF), namely, BF 90 kg N (SB) + TF 60 kg N (SB), (H2); BF 90 kg N (SB) + TF 45 kg N (DP, deep placement) + FF (flowering fertilizer) 7.5 kg N (SB), (H3); BF 90 kg (SB) + TF 45 kg N (DF) + FF 15 kg N (SB), (H4); BF 90 kg N(SB) + TF 30 kg N (DP) + FF 7.5 kg N (SB), (H5); BF 90 kg N (SB) + TF 30 kg N (DP) + FF 15 kg N (SB), (H6). The results showed that mean grain yield of WFY615 and YXYZ for H4 was 10.57 t ha −1 and 10.42 t ha −1 , which was 14.58% and 7.49% higher than H2, respectively. The main reason was due to the increase of productive panicle per ha, spikelet per panicle and grain filling percentage. The highest total dry matter of WFY615 and YXYZ at heading (HS) and mature stages (MS) was for H4, which was 9.24, 15.97, 11.65, and 14.71 t ha −1 , respectively. There was 31.09, 25.96, 41.73, and 20.58% higher total dry matter material of WFY615 and YXYZ for H4 than H2 at HS and MS, respectively. The largest leaf area index of H4 was also found at HS and fifteen days after HS for two rice cultivars, which was 6.24, 8.79, 6.09, and 8.29, respectively. The H4 treatment had the largest net photosynthetic rate, followed by H3 and H2, while the least net photosynthetic rate was recorded for H1. In addition, significant improvements were also founded in chlorophyll content, glutamate synthase, and nitrate reductase activities of sword leaves at HS for H4. Therefore, the fertilizer management can be regarded as one of high-efficiency fertilization method with 90 kg N ha −1 basal fertilizer by surface broadcast plus 45 kg N ha −1 tillering fertilizer under mechanical deep placement and 15 kg N ha −1 flowering fertilizer by surface broadcast.

New Insights from Soil Microorganisms for Sustainable Double Rice-Cropping System with 37-Year Manure Fertilization

Abstract:Long-term intensive use of mineral fertilizers in double rice-cropping systems has led to soil acidification and soil degradation. Manure fertilization was suggested as an alternative strategy to mitigate soil degradation. However, the effects of long-term mineral and manure fertilization on rice grain yield, yield stability, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, soil total nitrogen (TN) content, and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Based on a long-term experiment established in 1981 in southern China, we compared four treatments: no fertilizer application (Control); application of nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (NPK); NPK plus green manure in early rice (M1); and M1 plus farmyard manure in late rice and rice straw return in winter (M2). Our results showed that 37 years of NPK, M1, and M2 significantly increased rice grain yield by 54%, 46%, and 72%, and yield stability by 22%, 17%, and 9%, respectively. M1 and M2 significantly increased SOC content by 39% and 23% compared to Control, respectively, whereas there was no difference between Control and NPK. Regarding soil TN content, it was significantly increased by 8%, 46%, and 20% by NPK, M1, and M2, respectively. In addition, M2 significantly increased bacterial OTU richness by 68%, Chao1 index by 79%, and altered the bacterial community composition. Changes in soil nutrient availability and bacterial Simpson index were positively correlated with the changes in grain yield, while shifts in bacterial community were closely related to yield stability. This study provides pioneer comprehensive assessments of the simultaneous responses of grain yield, yield stability, SOC and TN content, nutrient availability, and bacterial community composition to long-term mineral and manure fertilization in a double rice-cropping system. Altogether, this study spanning nearly four decades provides new perspectives for developing sustainable yet intensive rice cultivation to meet growing global demands.

Abstract:Whether combining rice-straw biochar (RSB) with leguminous cover crop (LCC) has synergistic effects in the rice production system or not, is still unknown. Two pot experiments were conducted to systematically explore the impacts of RSB on mass decomposition and nitrogen (N) release from LCC residues after incorporation into acidic paddy soil. Similarly, the effect of combining these two factors on soil nutrient status and microbial biomasses in the rice production system was also examined. Five treatments, namely, no N fertilizer (CK), 100% N fertilizer (150 kg N ha –1 as N 100 ), 80% N fertilizer plus RSB (N 80 B), LCC (N 80 M), and a combination of RSB with LCC (N 80 BM), were included. The results indicated that biomass decomposition and N release pattern followed a double exponential decay model such that the addition of RSB slightly stimulated the rates of both mass decomposition and N release during the initial rapid phase of decomposition. Thereafter, it notably slowed down the rates of both these parameters during the relatively slower stage of incorporating LCC residues to paddy soil during early rice season. Compared to 100% N, applying 80% N in conjunction with RSB and/or LCC residue increased grain yield and its components (i.e., effective panicles, 1,000-grain weight, and fully filled grains) that subsequently increased N accumulation and its physiological use efficiency ( PUE N ) of rice shoot. Moreover, under 20% N, applying RSB and/or LCC residue remarkably increased the soil organic matter and total N, and soil microbial populations and biomasses, while the contents of NH 4 + and NO 3 – were decreased in RSB-amended paddy soil (N 80 B and N 80 BM), in comparison with N 100 . Thus, combining RSB with LCC residue is a novel and promising management intervention for reducing mineral fertilizer use, improving soil fertility and rice production, and consequently minimizing the overall production cost in south China.

Abstract:A long-term field experiment was carried out (since 2008) for evaluating the effects of different substitution rates of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer by green manure (GM) on yield stability and N balance under double rice cropping system. Treatments included, (1) N0 (no N fertilizer and no green manure); (2) N100 (recommended rate of N fertilizer and no green manure); (3) N100-M (recommended rate of N fertilizer and green manure); (4) N80-M (80% of recommended N fertilizer and green manure); (5) N60-M (60% of recommended N fertilizer and green manure); and (6) M (green manure without N fertilization). Results showed that, among all treatments, annual crop yield under N80-M treatment was highest. Crop yield did not show significant differences between N100-M and N80-M treatments. Substitution of different N fertilizer rates by GM reduced the yield variability index. Compared to the N0 treatment, yield variability index of early rice under N100-M, N80-M, and N60-M treatments was decreased by 11%, 26%, and 36%, respectively. Compared to the N0 treatment, yield variability index of late rice was decreased by 12%, 38%, 49%, 47%, and 24% under the N100, N100-M, N80-M, N60-M, and M treatments, respectively. During period of 2009–2013 and 2014–2018, nitrogen recovery efficiency (NRE) was highest under N80-M treatment and N balance was highest under N100 treatment. NRE of all treatments with GM was increased over the time from 2009–2013 to 2014–2018. All treatments with GM showed increasing trend of SOC over the years. Substitution of N fertilizer by GM also increased C inputs and soil C:N ratio compared to the N100 and N0 treatments. Boosted regression model indicated that C input, N uptake and AN were most influencing factors of crop yield. Thus, we concluded that N fertilization rates should be reduced by 20% under GM rotation to attain high yield stability of double rice cropping system through increasing NRE and C inputs.
