Abstract:With the steady growth in the worldwide solar installed capacity, there is an immediate concern about the fate of the solar panels at the end of their life. Solar panel waste is often disposed of indiscriminately, exposing the environment to chemical hazards. The major objective of the current study was to evaluate the leaching potential of the polycrystalline solar panel waste under different simulated disposal conditions through toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and pH static leaching procedure tests. Moreover, the study evaluates the effects of ageing and the breakage of the Glass Laminate Encapsulation (GLE) of solar panels on their leaching potential. Among the metals studied (silver (Ag), aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)), the concentrations of Pb were as high as 9.3 mg/L, 1.4 mg/L, 6.7 mg/L in the TCLP, SPLP, and pH static test respectively. This indicated the hazardous nature of the waste with leaching potential of Pb above the permissible limits stipulated by various regulatory bodies. The presence of GLE reduced the mobility of Pb by a factor of 4.1-8.8 in the TCLP test, thereby rendering the waste as non-hazardous for its disposal in a landfill. However, the indiscriminate disposal of solar panel waste in the natural environment as simulated by the SPLP test indicated its harmful nature irrespective of the physical condition. Ageing of the solar panels before disposal and acidic pH conditions also positively influenced the leaching potential of the selected metals subjected to their reactivity and the accessibility of internal layers of waste to the leaching solution. Strategies such as extended producer responsibilty, advance-recycling fee, and incentivizing the recycling industry will lead to both economic benefit creation and effective waste management of this waste stream.

Abstract:Environmental management of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules is attracting attention as a growing number of field-operated PV modules approach end of life (EoL). PV modules may contain small amounts of toxic metals, and the procedures for assessing and regulating the toxic metal content and release of such materials at EoL differ widely across nations. This paper provides an overview of the metal composition of PV modules and common procedures for toxicity assessment through extensive research and review of technical literature and legislative documents. This review focuses on three primary aspects: first, it explores the distribution of toxic elements within current and emerging PV module designs, with a specific focus on obtaining representative samples for proportional toxicity testing within different module laminate areas. Second, it examines a sampling standard and the diverse toxicity testing methods and regulations employed in various regions, encompassing standards like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Test Method 1311 (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, TCLP) in the U.S., Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Europe, and the Waste Extraction Test (WET) in California. Third, the review examines the sources of variability in toxicity testing outcomes, including techniques for securing homogeneous samples from non-uniform PV modules, selecting particle sizes representative of landfill conditions in extracted samples, determining appropriate leachate characteristics such as leaching agents and pH levels, and considering factors like test duration and temperatures. In summary, this review summarizes relevant regulations and offers a comprehensive overview of the strengths and limitations associated with several toxicity assessment procedures currently in practice.

Abstract:In their recent publication in Journal of Hazardous Materials (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jhazmat.2015.12.018), Tammaro et al. evaluate the potential environmental impacts of an illegal disposal scenario of photovoltaic panels in the European Union. Critical assumptions that underlie the study's conclusions would benefit from clarification. A scenario of photovoltaic panels finely crushed and abandoned in nature is not supported with field breakage data, in which photovoltaic panels remain largely intact with a number of glass fractures or cracks, as opposed to breakage into cm-scale pieces. Fate and transport analysis is necessary to evaluate how leachate transforms and disperses in moving from the point of emissions to the point of exposure, prior to making comparisons with drinking water limits. Some hazardous metal content has declined in both crystalline silicon and thin film panels, including a 50% decline in semiconductor material intensity in CdTe thin film panels (g CdTe/W) from 2009 to 2015. Waste laws, recycling requirements and minimum treatment standards under the EU WEEE Directive, and illegal disposal rates affect the accuracy of forecasts of releasable metal amounts from PV panels in Europe through 2050.

Abstract:The solar energy sector has grown rapidly in the past decades, addressing the issues of energy security and climate change. Many photovoltaic (PV) panels that were installed during this technological revolution, have accumulated as waste and even more are nearing their End-of-Life (EoL). Based on circular economy, a new hydrometallurgical process has been proposed for the management of the EoL PVs. This results in a chemical extract containing 0.7% w/w Ag, along with various other metals. This study investigates the MFC technology as an alternative method for valuable metal recovery from the chemical extract of PV panels. Moreover, metal recovery from the chemical extract is compared with the individual recoveries obtained using corresponding synthetic solutions. The results indicated that silver was completely recovered from the synthetic and the real chemical extract, with a rate of ~ 82 and ~ 32 μmol/h, respectively. The difference is attributed to the simultaneous reduction of other heavy metals in amorphous compounds, hindering the silver reduction kinetics and leading to a gradual electrode passivation. Nevertheless, silver can be 100% retrieved from the chemical extract, with a purity of 68–96% w/w (average 86% w/w), in crystal (face center cube) structure, containing minor metal impurities.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of the installed capacity of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules, the number of used modules that reach their End of Life (EoL) is accumulating dramatically and it is expected to pose significant environmental hazards. To solve this upcoming issue, this research investigated a comprehensive hydrometallurgical recycling process for crystalline silicon (C-Si) solar cells with regard to the problems of low element separation efficiency, inadequate component recovery rate, and deficient environmental considerations in the current recycling processes. Appropriate hydrometallurgical recovery processes were designed to recover valuable elements and entrap hazardous material lead (Pb) while properly treating wastewater from the recycling process. Nitric acid (HNO3) is an effective choice for elemental leaching from the waste, with 98.12% and 99.57% simultaneous leaching rates of silver (Ag) and aluminum (Al), respectively. The overall recovery rate of Ag was 96.13% using the hydrochloric acid (HCl) precipitation-ammonia solubilization-hydrazine process route. The purity of Ag after reduction was 99.8%. The silicon nitride (SiNx) and silicon phosphide (Si3P4) layers on the surface of the silicon wafer can be completely etched and removed by low-concentration HCl, and the product obtained is pure silicon. Most importantly, heavy metal elements such as Pb were captured to prevent potential damage to the environment and human health.

Abstract:Abstract Indium, selenium, tellurium, gallium, molybdenum, cadmium and silicon are some of the major elements used in photovoltaic cells. Fully aware of the limited availability of these metals in future, recycling has been recognized as the most advisable end-of-life strategy to save these raw materials from turning into production wastes. On the other hand, statutory measures such as “Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz” (the German law encouraging closed-loop economy) aim to achieve a maximum quota of recycling and a minimum use of resources such as energy and raw materials. By the year of 2050, end-of-life photovoltaic panels are anticipated to amount to 9.57 million tons [1]. Although we are not there yet, discussions on recycling have already started. We have to prepare for higher waste volumes expected in the coming years. But already today we need to solve some environmental problems like loss of conventional resources (e.g., glass) and rare metals [2]. All of the known approaches for recycling photovoltaic semiconductor material seem economically and environmentally inefficient [3, 4]. In this paper, we report about reclaiming metals from scrap of thin film systems and associated photovoltaic manufacturing wastes like sandblasting dust and overspray. We also report one universal wet-chemical treatment for reclaiming the metals from CIS, CIGS or CdTe photovoltaic waste. Further, we discuss the application of our method to new PV systems, such as substrates other than glass (stainless steel, aluminum or plastic foil sheets) and alternative semiconductor alloys such as GaAs.

Abstract:Toxicants like Pb in lead-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) may become available to humans through leaching and transport through water, air, and soil. Here, we summarize the potential toxicity of different substances in PSCs and determine the leaching concentration of typical heavy metals used in PSCs through dynamic leaching tests (DLTs). Extraction fluids for the standard toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, synthetic precipitation leaching procedure, and deionized water were used as the DLT leaching solutions. Results indicated that the leaching concentration of Pb exceeded the hazardous waste limit of 5 mg/L. In addition, Pb was found to continuously leach out in the leaching cycles of water extraction. The findings confirmed that discarded PSCs may release Pb when subjected to water, rain, and landfill leachate. Total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand analyses indicated that discarded PSCs could increase the oxygen consumption and may release CO2 into the environment.
A Comprehensive and Sustainable Recycling Process for Different Types of Blended End-of-Life Solar Panels: Leaching and Recovery of Valuable Base and Precious Metals and/or Elements

Abstract:The production of photovoltaic modules is increasing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, this results in a significant amount of waste at the end of their lifespan. Therefore, recycling these solar panels is important for environmental and economic reasons. However, collecting and separating crystalline silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper–indium–gallium–selenide panels can be challenging, especially in underdeveloped countries. The innovation in this work is the development of a process to recycle all solar panel waste. The dissolution of all metals through the leaching process is studied as the main step of the flowchart. In the first step of leaching, 98% of silver can be recovered by 0.5 M nitric acid. Then, the second and third step involves the use of glycine for base metal dissolution, followed by the leaching of valuable metals with hydrochloric acid. The effect of parameters such as the initial pH, acid concentration, solid/liquid ratio, and hydrogen peroxide concentration is studied. The results show that up to 100% of Cu, Pb, Sn, Zn, Cd, In, Ga, and Se can be recovered under optimal conditions. The optimal conditions for the dissolution of Cu, Zn, and Cd were a glycine concentration of 0.5 M, a temperature of 25 °C, a solid/liquid ratio of 10 gr/L, and 1% of hydrogen peroxide. The optimized glycine concentration for the leaching of lead and tin was 1.5 M. Indium and gallium were recovered at 100% by the use of 5 M hydrochloric acid, S/L ratio = 10 gr/L, and T = 45 °C. Separation of selenium and tellurium occurred using 0.5 M HCl at a temperature of 60 °C. Additionally, for the first time, a general outlook for the recycling of various end-of-life solar panels is suggested.

Abstract:Presently, India is in the stage of installation of solar photovoltaic panels and no focus is being given towards the impending problem of handling solar waste. The absence of adequate regulations, guidelines and operational infrastructure for photovoltaic waste in the country may lead to waste being inappropriately landfilled or incinerated in a manner that may be detrimental to human health and the environment. Business as usual projection estimates 6.64 million tonnes and 5.48 million tonnes of waste generation due to the early and regular losses using the Weibull distribution function, respectively by 2040 in India. The current study also systematically investigates various policies and legislation developments on the end-of-life of photovoltaic modules in various regions of the world, to identify gaps for further assessment. Using life cycle assessment methodology, this paper compares the environmental impacts of landfilling end-of-life crystalline silicon panels with avoided burden approach due to the recycling of materials. It has been demonstrated that solar photovoltaic recycling and reusing the recovered materials will result in impact reduction in the forthcoming production phase by as high as 70%. Further, the outcomes of carbon footprint, single score indicator with the application of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change also predicts lower values for avoided burden approach due to recycling (15,393.96 kgCO 2 eq) in comparison to landfill approach (19,844.054 kg CO 2 eq). The outcomes of this study aim to illuminate the importance of the sustainable management of photovoltaic panels at end-of-life.

Abstract:The installed capacity of photovoltaic solar energy is on the rise, which will lead to significant amounts of end-of-life solar panels in the future. It is estimated that at least 60 million tons of solar panel waste will be generated by the year 2050. Several countries have adopted standardized waste leaching regulations to assist in the management of this waste. This review addresses the environmental risks of photovoltaic panel waste. Abstract:With the rapid deployment of renewable energy using photovoltaic (PV) panels, the sustainable management of decommissioned PV modules has become challenging. Decommissioned modules contain heavy metals, such as copper, cadmium, and lead, and hazardous polymer substances, such as ethylene vinyl acetate, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinylidene fluoride, which can pose a serious threat to the environment if disposed in a landfill. In addition, the low concentration value of critical metals, such as silver, indium, and tellurium, can also be lost. In this context, recycling decommissioned PV panels can be useful to resource recovery of valuable metals while lowering environmental stress. However, the lower share of PV modules and the prolonged life of 25-30 years compared to other waste volumes (e.g., electronic waste) hinder the progress in this direction. In contrast, reaching the end-of-life of the deployed first-generation PV panels is creating attraction toward the recycling of decommissioned modules. Henceforth, exploring the commercial viability of PV recycling necessitates a review of the methodologies that have been investigated on a laboratory scale and have the potential to be up-scaled. In this review, the recent trends in various PV-recycling steps, including frame disassembly, delamination, metal extraction, and recovery, are underlined while the associated problems are determined to suggest the required improvements in future technology. Furthermore, the environmental and economic feasibility of a few techniques are discussed to establish the viability of the recycling process. This review contributes to formulating PV waste management strategies and providing future research directions.
Response to the Upcoming Emerging Waste: Necessity and Feasibility Analysis of Photovoltaic Waste Recovery in China.

Abstract:With the widespread photovoltaic deployment to achieve the net-zero energy goal, the resulting photovoltaic waste draws attention. In China, considerable steps have not been taken for photovoltaic waste management. The lack of relevant scientific information on photovoltaic waste brings difficulties to the establishment of photovoltaic waste regulatory systems. In this study, the necessity and feasibility of photovoltaic waste recovery were investigated. In China, the photovoltaic waste stream was quantified as 48.67-60.78 million t in 2050. In photovoltaic waste, indium, selenium, cadmium, and gallium were in high risk, judging by the metal criticality analysis, which meant that their recovery was significant to alleviate the resource shortage. The full recovery method was proved to reduce the environmental burdens most. For cost and benefit analysis, the net present value/size was -1.02 $/kg according to the current industrial status. However, it can be profitable with the recovery of silver. This study provides scientific and comprehensive information for photovoltaic waste management in China and is expected to promote the sustainable development of photovoltaic industry.

Experimental, cost and waste analysis of recycling process for crystalline silicon solar module

Abstract:Photovoltaic (PV) technology is projected to supply nearly one fourth of the power need worldwide by year 2050. However, owing to the various toxic as well as valuable materials contained in the panel makes the technology questionable after the end of life. Therefore, there is a need to recycle and recover materials from the solar panels. This study explores different aspects of recycling like recovery of materials, cost involved, and waste generated. Firstly, thermal process was optimized for the maximum utilization of energy and space inside the muffle furnace with which a total of 800 gm solar panel pieces, placed in five stacks, successfully processed in a single run. Following that, solar cell pieces and connecting wires were separated and treated with optimized solution of KOH, HNO 3 for extraction of Al and Ag, respectively. Connecting wires treated with optimized solution of 4 M HCl at 80 °C to recover Cu wires and liberate Pb and Sn ions. The acidic waste water generated during the process was neutralized using Ca(OH) 2 . Addition of Ca(OH) 2 to waste water not only maintained the pH of water but also lead to the precipitation of toxic metal ions like Pb. Cost analysis has shown that the input cost is higher than the output cost, majority of which resulted from the zinc dust employed to recover Sn and Cu. CuO powder and K 2 SO 4 crystals were also obtained as the by-product. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy revealed that majority of solid waste generated is toxic in nature due to Pb.

Abstract:Photovoltaic panels (PV) are expected to generate considerable amounts of wastes in the next years due to their life cycle (approximately 25 years). Among others (Ti, Te, Cd, In, Se, Ga etc.) silver is one of the heavy metals used as a conductor in the solar cell of PV panels. Synthetic silver containing wastewater was prepared, simulating the chemical extract originating from 1st generation PV. The real extract was produced by a hydrometallurgical method that was developed. A dual chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) was constructed and used for recovery of silver from a medium with an initial silver concentration of 50 mg/L. The effect of the catholyte’s conductivity and pH on silver reduction was examined. High silver recoveries were observed (> 93%) both at pH 2 and pH 7. The conductivity affected the time required for silver recovery. In particular at a conductivity of 0.06 mS/cm, the recovery was complete within 24 h while at a conductivity of 18.9 mS/cm the silver recovery was completed within 5 h. The system achieved a higher power output (248 mW/m2) at pH 2 versus pH 7 (202 mW/m2) whereas a lower internal resistance was observed at pH 2 (604 Ω) in comparison with the internal resistance at pH 7 (1103 Ω). The highest silver reduction rate (2.65 g Ag/h/m2) was achieved at pH 2. SEM imaging and EDS confirmed the deposition of silver crystals on the cathodic electrode.

Abstract:The increasing number of photovoltaic (PV) panels installed worldwide requires solutions for their disposal at their end-of-life. PV modules contain several valuable metals like copper and silver as well as toxic ones like lead used in solder. Another valuable component are silicon wafers, because of their high purity, which is obtained in energy and resource intensive production processes. Many recycling procedures, however, are downcycling processes that do not recover these components, but rather are based on shredding and landfilling the modules or obtaining only one of those materials. Often, nitric acid is used as leaching agent for the recovery of silver and copper resulting in harmful NO x emissions that necessitate additional gas treatment. We present an alternative electrochemical process by which leaching reagents are generated on boron-doped diamond electrodes as anode material, which are ideal for this task due to their high overpotential for the oxygen evolution reaction. By evaluating different electrolytes, sulfuric acid was found to be suitable by generating peroxydisulfate (S2O82−). With its standard redox potential of +2.0 V, it is possible to oxidize rather noble metals like silver. To evaluate the efficiency of the process S2O82− was generated from sulfuric acid in an H-cell setup and the leaching rate of copper, silver and tin was investigated and optimized by varying acid concentration and current density. Efficient leaching of all metals was achieved in 5 M sulfuric acid at 200 mA/cm2. The feasibility of the process for real waste streams was demonstrated by disassembling PV modules and leaching busbars and silver coatings from wafers. The complete removal of the metal coatings from the residual wafers was confirmed by EDX. A significant advantage of the process with S2O82− as leaching agent is, that the reaction with metals forms sulfate that can be oxidized again within a cyclic process driven by electricity as displayed in figure 1. Additionally, the metals can be recovered by electrowinning from the etching solution within the same cell. This was demonstrated by recovering Ag, Cu and Sn from sulfuric acid solution. By using potentiostatic conditions it was additionally possible to separate the metals by consecutively plating them in the order of their respective redox potentials. Leached metals from PV waste were recovered electrochemically with 99 % and 88 % yield for Cu and Ag, respectively. Sn could not be plated due to the high amounts of persulfate present in solution, however recovery by precipitation is possible. Pb is obtained as undissolved residue during leaching, due to the extremely low solubility of PbSO 4 and PbO 2 . Aside from the H-cell experiments the generation of S2O82− and electrowinning was successfully investigated in a flow cell setup. This system benefits from a significantly decreased cell voltage making the process more energy efficient and allows easier upscaling towards industrial applications. The presented process is energy efficient as both electrode reactions are utilized and furthermore does not require the continuous addition of chemicals, therefore, making it an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to conventional recycling methods. Abstract:The impending wave of decommissioning of photovoltaic (PV) modules, installed in the early 2000s and reaching gigawatt scale by 2030, poses a significant environmental and social challenge. End-of-life silicon PV modules, abundant in high-purity trace metals, offer a significant potential for recycling. We have developed an innovative and sustainable chemical process that combines low-concentration alkaline solutions with iron chloride for the efficient recovery of aluminium and metallic silver from waste solar cells. This process is characterized by a minimal environmental impact, reducing the life cycle assessment impact by half compared to conventional methods.

Abstract:Due to the current situation of fossil fuels eradication and over-exploitation across the world. The energy demands of the world are to be fulfilled by renewable energy sources. Among these Solar energy has the maximum potential to be exploited to the maximum level to full fill the energy demands of the world. Renewable energies contribute to the environmental, social, and economic development of countries [1]. There are various of clean and renewable energy sources such as Solar, biomass, wind, hydrogen, fuel cell, nanocomposite, and supercapacitor. Each of the energy sources are suitable for specific geographical locations and can suits from region to region [6]. Since ages Sun has been praised as a vitalizer of life. The total Solar energy absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, oceans and land masses is approximately 122 PW·year = 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per year. Most of the world's population live in areas with insolation levels of 150– 300 watts/m2, or 3.5–7.0 kWh/m2 per day [2 google- Solar Wikipedia]. Solar energy is the most secure and ubiquitous source of energy to meet the power needs after coal exploitation. In present time installation of photovoltaic (PV) Solar modules are growing extremely fast. As result of the increase, the volume of modules that reach the end of their life will grow at the same rate in the near future. Global installed PV capacity reached around 773 GW at the end of 2020 [3] and is expected to rise further to 2840 GW by 2030 and 4500 GW by 2050 [4, 5-Abstract ]. Considering an average module lifetime of 25 years, the worldwide Solar PV waste is anticipated to reach between 4%-14% of total generation capacity by 2030 and rise to over 80% (around 78 million tonnes) by 2050 [5-Abstract]. Therefore, the disposal of PV modules will become a pertinent environmental issue in the next decades. Eventually, there is plenty of room for progress in this area. This review present core reality of Photovoltaic Life Cycle, Photovoltaic Technology, Photovoltaic Recycling Process as well as global Waste Management Regulation in different countries and the Environmental & Economic Aspects of recycling. At present, PV recycling management in many countries envisages to extend the duties of the manufacturers of PV materials to encompass their eventual disposal or reuse. However, further improvements in the economic viability, practicality, high recovery rate and environmental performance of the PV industry with respect to recycling its products are indispensable. There is potential to develop new pathway for PV waste management industry development and offer employment and prospects for both public and private sector investors. Recycling of discarded photovoltaic solar modules for metal recovery

Abstract:India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from end-of-life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained extensive attention in the field of solar photovoltaic technology over the past few years. Despite being a remarkable alternative to fossil fuels, solar cells may have detrimental effects on the environment and human health owing to the use of toxic materials during manufacturing. Although modern metal-halide-based PSCs are stable and have encapsulation to prevent the release of potentially toxic materials into the environment, their destruction due to strong winds, hail, snow, landslides, fires, or waste disposal can result in the exposure of these materials to the environment. This may lead to the contamination of soil and groundwater, and uptake of potentially toxic elements by plants, subsequently affecting humans and other living organisms via food chain contamination. Despite worldwide concern, the environmental and ecotoxicological impacts of metal-halide-based PSCs have not been comprehensively surveyed. This review summarizes and critically evaluates the current status of metal-halide-based PSC production and its impact on environmental sustainability, food security, and human health. Furthermore, safe handling and disposal methods for the waste generated from metal-halide-based PSCs are proposed, with a focus on recycling and reuse. Although some studies have suggested that the amount of lead released from metal halide PSCs is far below the maximum permissible levels in most soils, a clear conclusion cannot be reached until real contamination scenarios are assessed under field conditions. Precautions must be taken to minimize environmental contamination throughout the lifecycle of PSCs until nontoxic and similarly performing alternative solar photovoltaic products are developed.
