Abstract:The interest in unmanned systems especially unmanned aerial vehicle is continuously increasing. Unmanned aerial vehicles started to become of great benefit in many different fields. It is anticipated that unmanned aerial vehicles will soon become a main component of the future urban air traffic. The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles within existing air traffic environments has started getting the attention of researchers. Integrating unmanned systems in the real-world urban air traffic requires the development of tools and simulators to enable researchers in their ongoing efforts. In this article, a simulator called UTSim is introduced. The proposed simulator is built using the Unity platform. UTSim is capable of simulating unmanned aerial vehicle physical specification, navigation, control, communication, sensing and avoidance in environments with static and moving objects. The simulator enables studying and exploring several unmanned aerial vehicle air traffic integration issues like sense and avoid, communication protocols, navigation algorithms, and much more. UTSim is designed and developed to be easily used. The user can specify the properties of the environment, the number and types of unmanned aerial vehicles in the environment, and specify the algorithm to be used for path planning and collision avoidance. The simulator outputs a log file with a lot of useful information such as the number of sent and received messages, the number of detected objects and collided unmanned aerial vehicles. Three scenarios have been implemented in this article to present the capabilities of UTSim and to illustrate how it can benefit researchers in the field of integrating unmanned aerial vehicles in urban air traffic.

Abstract:The Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) system is a set of services offering an automated management of the airspace and thus providing safe and secure Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flights in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Controlled airspace refers to the portion of the airspace that is under the authority of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and where separation services are offered, while uncontrolled airspace refers to the portion of airspace where aircraft are not regulated by ATC. This article is a comprehensive survey of the existing UTMs development efforts with a focus on the different UTMs architectures, the provided services, the used communication technologies and the decision-making process within UTMs. We firstly review the different UTM architecture and propose a novel UTM taxonomy based on high-level qualitative criteria. Secondly, we detail the services provided by UTMs with an emphasis on the used technologies in the identification, the surveillance, the monitoring, and the deconfliction services. Effective decision-making is crucial, particularly in emergency scenarios such as Air-to-Ground (A2G) communication loss, battery or motor malfunction, or encountering aerial obstacles, among other potential hazards. Despite its significance, the UTM decision-making process is not enough considered in the literature and especially in UTM surveys. We analyze and compare in this article both the centralized and decentralized UTM decision-making. Centralized decision-making is not conducted in real-time and primarily relies on Air-to-Ground (A2G) communication. In the decentralized case, the decision-making process primarily relies on communication and collaboration among UAVs with varying degrees of autonomy. We show in this paper that centralized decision-making may encounter issues with packet loss and imperfect data, which can negatively impact the quality of decision-making. We also highlight that the decentralized decision-making may also face challenges related to security and scalability, which can hinder its effectiveness. Finally, evaluating the performance of UTMs on a real environment raises several challenges and the simulation is a cost-effective alternative. Hence, we provide a summary of the existing UTMs simulators and discuss their main features.

Abstract:Nowadays, the demand for optimized services in urban environments to provide better society wellness is increasing. In this sense, ground transportation in dense urban environments has been facing challenges for many years (e.g., congestion and resilience). One import outcome of the effort made toward the creation of new concepts for enhancing urban transportation is the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concept. UAM aims at enhancing city transportation services using manned and unmanned vehicles. However, these operations bring many challenges to be faced, e.g., the interaction between the controller agent and autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, trajectory planning is not a simple task due to several factors. Firstly, the trajectories must consider a reduced minimum separation as eVTOL vehicle are expected to operate in complex urban environments. This leads the trajectory planning process to observe safety primitives more restrictively once the airspace is expected to comport many vehicles that follow small minimum separation standards. Thereupon, the main goal of the Trajectory-Based UAM Operations Simulator (TUS) is to simulate the Trajectory-Based UAM operations in urban environments considering the presence of both manned and unmanned eVTOL vehicles. For this, a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) approach is adopted, which considers an input (i.e., the eVTOL vehicles, their origin and destination, and their respective trajectories) and produces an output (which describes if the trajectories are safe and the elapsed operation time). The main contribution of this simulation tool is to provide a simulated environment for testing and measuring the effectiveness (e.g., flight duration) of trajectories planned for eVTOL vehicles.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are necessary across diverse domains, including disaster surveillance and wildlife conservation. However, the development and evaluation of UAV-related algorithms often encounter a significant hurdle: the scarcity of authentic training data. In this paper, we introduce U2USim, a telepresence simulation platform with a dynamic environment, serving as a realistic synthetic data generation, performance evaluation, and visualization tool for UAV-to-UAV (U2U) cooperative learning. This paper presents the architecture, features, and capabilities of U2USim. Leveraging Unreal Engine (UE), AirSim APIs, and ROS (Robot Operating System), our platform enables realistic simulations, mirroring real-world conditions and facilitating research in UAV technology.

Abstract:The number of daily small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operations in uncontrolled low altitude airspace is expected to reach into the millions. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) is an emerging concept aiming at the safe and efficient management of such very dense traffic, but few studies are addressing the policies to accommodate such demand and the required ground infrastructure in suburban or urban environments. Searching for the optimal air traffic management policy is a combinatorial optimization problem with intractable complexity when the number of sUAS and the constraints increases. As the demands on the airspace increase and traffic patterns get complicated, it is difficult to forecast the potential low altitude airspace hotspots and the corresponding ground resource requirements. This work presents a Multi-agent Air Traffic and Resource Usage Simulation (MATRUS) framework that aims for fast evaluation of different air traffic management policies and the relationship between policy, environment and resulting traffic patterns. It can also be used as a tool to decide the resource distribution and launch site location in the planning of a next-generation smart city. As a case study, detailed comparisons are provided for the sUAS flight time, conflict ratio, cellular communication resource usage, for a managed (centrally coordinated) and unmanaged (free flight) traffic scenario.

Abstract:This paper presents the Simulation Infrastructure for Research on Interoperating Unmanned Systems (SIRIUS), a research framework for simulation and analysis of future conceptual Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations. SIRIUS is being developed under the auspices of the NASA Air Traffic Management eXploration project, UAM subproject (ATM-X UAM). SIRIUS provides an intuitive, highly configurable graphical user interface to design complex traffic scenarios and airspace configurations representative of conceptual UAM operations. Aircraft simulated with SIRIUS can be equipped with flight-tested capabilities for detect and avoid (DAA), geofencing, distributed merging and spacing, path conformance, and path planning while executing time-constrained, 4D trajectories generated by a UAM ground operations system. Central to the design of the SIRIUS simulation framework is the capability to evaluate the integration and interoperability of ground-based separation services (e.g., strategic separation) with extended DAA functionality (e.g., path monitoring, separation provision, merging and spacing, etc.) The simulation environment also supports modelling of wind, navigation, and sensor uncertainties, as well as communication delays. SIRIUS enables distributed simulation of large-scale scenarios. An interactive graphical analysis capability helps isolate, visualize, and compare relevant vehicle state data and widely used measures of performance metrics across multiple scenarios.

Abstract:Despite significant progress, the deployment of UAV technology in commercial and civil applications is still lagging. This is essentially due to the risks associated with drone flights and the lack of coordinated technologies that would mitigate these risks. While Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management systems (UTM) are being developed worldwide to enable safe operation, the counter-drone technology operates on an all-enemy basis and regards any sighted drone as a threat. This situation is essentially caused by the lack of information exchange between stakeholders. Without the exchange of relevant information, a counter-drone system can misclassify drones and initiate erroneous interdiction procedures. This paper proposes a system that integrates counter-drone technology into the UTM system for information exchange and coordination using a set of clarification protocols towards accountable response to sighted drones. The system functionality and performance were evaluated by simulation.

Abstract:The application areas for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) Systems (UAS) are constantly expanding. Aside from providing an attractive alternative in applications that are risky for humans, smaller UAS become highly attractive for applications where use of larger aircraft is not practical. This paper presents the UAS Collaboration Wireless Network (UAS-CWN), a secure and reliable UAS communication mesh-network. This solution is proposed for the circumstances where a large number of UAS are deployed to cooperatively accomplish a mission such as surveillance in hostile environments. The proposed UAS-CWN system provides high fault-tolerance through use of information dispersal algorithm and meanwhile reduces the risk of information exposure to the adversaries via security-enhancing mechanisms. Our evaluation shows promising results. Especially, a UAS-CWN with high security-level settings can withstand losing 30% of the total number of unmaned aircrafts while steadily achieving above 96% data recovery rate.

Abstract:Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) will be an important component of the smart city and intelligent transportation environments of the near future. The demand for sUAS related applications, such as commercial delivery and land surveying, is expected to grow rapidly in next few years. In general, sUAS traffic routing and management functions are needed to coordinate the launching of sUAS from different launch sites and determine their trajectories to avoid conflict while considering several other constraints such as expected arrival time, minimum flight energy, and availability of communication resources. However, as the airborne sUAS density grows in a certain area, it is difficult to foresee the potential airspace and communications resource conflicts and make immediate decisions to avoid them. To address this challenge, we present a temporal and spatial routing algorithm and simulation platform for sUAS trajectory management in a high density urban area that plans sUAS movements in a spatial and temporal maze taking into account obstacles that are either static or dynamic in time. The routing allows the sUAS to avoid static no-fly areas (i.e. static obstacles) or other in-flight sUAS and areas that have congested communication resources (i.e. dynamic obstacles). The algorithm is evaluated using an agent-based simulation platform. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other route management algorithms in many areas, especially in processing speed and memory efficiency. Detailed comparisons are provided for the sUAS flight time, the overall throughput, conflict rate and communication resource utilization. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can be used to address the airspace and communication resource utilization needs for a next generation smart city and smart transportation.

Abstract:Within the framework of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, one of the main goals of the Labyrinth project was to develop and test the Conflict Management services of a U-space-based Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system. The U-space concept of operations (ConOps) provides a high-level description of the architecture, requirements and functionalities of these systems, but the implementer has a certain degree of freedom in aspects like the techniques used or some policies and procedures. The current document describes some of those implementation decisions. The prototype included part of the services defined by the ConOps, namely e-identification, Tracking, Geo-awareness, Drone Aeronautical Information Management, Geo-fence Provision, Operation Plan Preparation/Optimization, Operation Plan Processing, Strategic Conflict Resolution, Tactical Conflict Resolution, Emergency Management, Monitoring, Traffic Information and Legal Recording. Moreover, a Web app interface was developed for the operator/pilot. The system was tested in simulations and real visual line of sight (VLOS) and beyond VLOS (BVLOS) flights, with both vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and fixed-wing platforms, while assisting final users interested in incorporating drones to support their tasks. The development and testing of the environment provided lessons at different levels: functionalities, compatibility, procedures, information, usability, ground control station (GCS) integration and aircrew roles.

Abstract:Visibility and communication are the essential pillars for safe flight operations in dense airspaces. Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) of the order of up to 25 kg are increasingly being used at airports as a cost-effective alternative for maintenance and calibration work. However, the joint operation of manned and unmanned aircraft in busy airspaces poses a major challenge. Due to the small diameter of such UAVs, the established principle of “see and avoid” is difficult or even impossible to implement, especially during take-off and landing. For this reason, a certified Mode A/C/S transponder supporting ADS-B was extended with an embedded system and a cellular interface to realize a Multi-Mode-Transceiver (MMT). Integrated into a UAV, the MMT can provide aircraft visibility in the context of traditional manned Air Traffic Management (ATM) and future UAS Traffic Management (UTM) at the same time. This multimodal communication approach was investigated in flight test campaigns with two commercially available UAS that were connected to an experimental UTM with a simulated controlled airspace. The results confirm the safety gain of the multimodal cooperative approach. Furthermore, the collaborative interface with ATC enables the digital transmission of transponder codes, entry clearances and emergency procedures without the need for a voice radio communication. However, the parallel operation of both radio technologies in a confined space requires modifications to the transmission power and alignment of the radio antennas to avoid mutual interference. Furthermore, different reference planes of barometric altitude measurement in manned and unmanned aviation pose additional challenges that need to be addressed.

Abstract:Sixth-Generation (6G) networks are set to provide reliable, widespread, and ultra-low-latency mobile broadband communications for a variety of industries. In this regard, the Internet of Drones (IoD) represents a key component for the development of 3D networks, which envisions the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial infrastructures. The recent employment of Intelligent Reflective Surfaces (IRSs) in combination with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) introduces more degrees of freedom to achieve a flexible and prompt mobile coverage. As the concept of smart radio environment is gaining momentum across the scientific community, this work proposes an extension module for Internet of Drones Simulator (IoD-Sim), a comprehensive simulation platform for the IoD, based on Network Simulator 3 (ns-3). This module is purposefully designed to assess the performance of UAV-aided IRS-assisted communication systems. Starting from the mathematical formulation of the radio channel, the simulator implements the IRS as a peripheral that can be attached to a drone. Such device can be dynamically configured to organize the IRS into patches and assign them to assist the communication between two nodes. Furthermore, the extension relies on the configuration facilities of IoD-Sim, which greatly eases design and coding of scenarios in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) language. A simulation campaign is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal by discussing several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as Radio Environment Map (REM), Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), maximum achievable rate, and average throughput.

Abstract:Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to revolutionize various applications in civilian domain such as disaster management, search and rescue operations, law enforcement, precision agriculture, and package delivery. As the number of such UAVs rise, a robust and reliable traffic management is needed for their integration in national airspace system (NAS) to enable real-time, reliable, and safe operation. Management of UAVs traffic in NAS becomes quite challenging due to issues such as real-time path planning of large number of UAVs, communication delays, operational uncertainties, failures, and noncooperating agents. In this work, we present a novel UAV traffic management (UTM) architecture that enables the integration of such UAVs in NAS. A combined A*–mixed integer linear programming (MILP)-based solution is presented for initial path planning of multiple UAVs with individual mission requirements and dynamic constraints. We also present a distributed detect-and-avoid (DAA) algorithm based on the concept of resource allocation using a market-based approach. The results demonstrate the scalability, optimality, and ability of the proposed approach to provide feasible solutions that are versatile in dynamic environments.

Abstract:Urban Air Mobility is a new concept of regional aviation that has been growing in popularity as a solution to the issue of ever-increasing ground traffic. Electric vehicles with vertical take-off and landing capabilities are being developed by numerous market companies as a result of the push toward environmentally sustainable aviation. The next stage in the eVTOL development process would be to define the concept of operation of these conceptual aircraft and then to integrate them with the existing airspace once they are airborne. In addition to coordinating with conventional air traffic and other Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles, collision avoidance with uncooperative airspace users has to be addressed. Birds and drones of all sizes could be dangerous for these low-flying aircraft. Innovative collision detection and avoidance techniques need to be employed due to the uncooperative nature of these airspace users and different performance characteristics of urban air mobility vehicles compared to classical fixed-wing aircraft. The aim of this study is to validate one such system by means of fast-time solutions. This system uses a decision tree and safety envelopes to prevent collisions with non-cooperative airspace members. The system is designed to work with different aircraft configurations used for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations. Various scenarios are modelled by varying intruder type, location, flight path among others. Changes in flight time and closest point of approach are assessed to evaluate the system with regard to safety and efficiency.

Abstract:An unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) system to support flights beyond visual line-of-sight is considered necessary for the promotion of commercial drone use. In the research and development of UTM systems, cost and time constraints make it difficult to actually fly a large number of drones in the same airspace, so research is mainly conducted using a simulator. This paper presents details of a UTM simulator named the “scalable simulator for knowledge of low-altitude environment” (SKALE) developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), with respect to the construction of a model case of drone delivery model set in 2030 in Japan. Moreover, UTM concepts for airspace safety and efficient airspace utilization (parcel transport) are proposed and evaluated using JAXA’s UTM simulator and drone delivery model cases. Simulation results are discussed, and the knowledge gained for the improvement of airspace safety and airspace utilization (parcel transport) efficiency is documented.

Abstract:The implementation of Urban Air Mobility represents a complex challenge in aviation due to the high degree of innovation required across various domains to realize it. From the use of advanced aircraft powered by novel technologies, the management of the air space to enable high density operations, to the operation of vertidromes serving as a start and end point of the flights, Urban Air Mobility paradigm necessitates significant innovation in many aspects of civil aviation as we know it today. In order to understand and assess the many facets of this new paradigm, a Collaborative Agent-Based Simulation is developed to holistically evaluate the System of Systems through the modeling of the stakeholders and their interactions as per the envisioned Concept of Operations. To this end, models of vertidrome air-side operations, unmanned/manned air space management, demand estimation and passenger mode choice, vehicle operator cost and revenues, vehicle design, and fleet management are brought together into a System of Systems Simulation of Urban Air Mobility. Through collaboration, higher fidelity models of each domain can be integrated into a single environment achieving fidelity levels not easily achievable otherwise. Furthermore, the integration enables the capture of cross-domain effects and allows domain-specific studies to be evaluated at a holistic level. This work demonstrates the Collaborative Simulation and the process of building it through the integration of several geographically distributed tools into an Agent-Based Simulation without the need for sharing code.

Abstract:Urban airspace environments present exciting new opportunities for delivering drone services to an increasingly large global market, including: information gathering; package delivery; air-taxi services. A key challenge is how to model airspace environments over densely populated urban spaces, coupled with the design and development of scalable traffic management systems that may need to handle potentially hundreds to thousands of drone movements per hour. This paper explores the background to Urban unmanned traffic management (UTM), examining high-level initiatives, such as the USA’s Unmanned Air Traffic (UTM) systems and Europe’s U-Space services, as well as a number of contemporary research activities in this area. The main body of the paper describes the initial research outputs of the U-Flyte R&D group, based at Maynooth University in Ireland, who have focused on developing an integrated approach to airspace modelling and traffic management platforms for operating large drone fleets over urban environments. This work proposes pragmatic and innovative approaches to expedite the roll-out of these much-needed urban UTM solutions. These approaches include the certification of drones for urban operation, the adoption of a collaborative and democratic approach to designing urban airspace, the development of a scalable traffic management and the replacement of direct human involvement in operating drones and coordinating drone traffic with machines. The key fundamental elements of airspace architecture and traffic management for busy drone operations in urban environments are described together with initial UTM performance results from simulation studies.

Abstract:Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial intelligence (AI) have increased automation potential within defense applications such as border protection, compound security, and surveillance applications. Advances in low-size weight and power (SWAP) computing platforms and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have enabled autonomous systems to meet the critical needs of future defense systems. Recent academic advances in deep learning aided computer vision yielding impressive results on object detection and recognition, necessary capabilities to enable autonomy in defense applications. These advances, often open-sourced, enable the opportunistic integration of state-of-the-art (SOTA) algorithms. However, these systems require a large amount of object-relevant data to transfer from general academic domains to more relevant situations. Additionally, UAS systems require costly verification and validation of autonomy logic. These challenges can lead to high costs for both training data generation and costly field autonomy integration and testing activities. To address these challenges, in conjunction with partners, Elbit America has developed a multipurpose synthetic simulation environment capable of generating synthetic training data and prototyping, verifying, and validating autonomous distributed behaviors. We integrated a thermal modeling capability into Unreal Engine to create realistic training data by enabling the real-time simulation of SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR sensors. This radiometrically correct sensor model capability enables the simulation-based training data generation for our object recognition and classification pipeline, called Rapid Algorithm Development and Deployment (RADD). Several drones were instantiated using emulated flight controllers to enable end-to-end autonomy training and development before hardware availability. Herein, we describe an overview of the simulation environment and its relevance to detection, classification, and distributed autonomous decision-making.

Abstract:Control systems on unmanned vehicles are safety-critical systems whose requirements on reliability and safety are ever-increasing. Currently, testing a complex autonomous control system is an expensive and time-consuming process, which requires massive repeated experimental testing during the whole development stage. This paper presents a unified simulation and test platform for vehicle autonomous control systems aiming to significantly improve the development speed and safety level of unmanned vehicles. First, a unified modular modeling framework compatible with different types of vehicles is proposed with methods to ensure modeling credibility. Then, the simulation software system is developed by the model-based design framework, whose modular programming methods and automatic code generation functions ensure the efficiency, credibility, and standardization of the system development process. Finally, an FPGA-based real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform is proposed to ensure the comprehensiveness and credibility of the simulation and test results. In the end, the proposed platform is applied to a multicopter control system. By comparing with experimental results, the accuracy and credibility of the simulation testing results are verified by using the simulation credibility assessment method proposed in our previous work. To verify the practicability of the proposed platform, several successful applications are presented for the multicopter rapid prototyping, estimation algorithm verification, autonomous flight testing, and automatic safety testing with automatic fault injection and result evaluation of unmanned vehicles.
