Abstract:Since China's economic reforms began in 1978, rural–urban migration has accelerated urban growth and the consequential need for regional planning. In order to make effective strategic decisions on regional planning, it is essential to identify the determinants that promote or restrain urban growth. Based on the theoretical underpinnings of classical economics, spatial economics and sustainable development, this paper establishes a theoretical model of urban population growth and uses a case study of China's Guangdong Province to test a hypothesis. The driving force of urban population growth is derived from natural and mechanical increases that include original urban size, living environment, industrial agglomeration, and location. Regression results from the case study reveal that during the period 2000–2010, factor of dominant industry significantly and consistently impacted urban growth, whereas the influence of living conditions and location on urban growth varied from year to year. These findings imply that local government pays less attention to residents' livelihood and more to the effect of location on urban growth. The paper concludes by proposing some regional planning policies for sustainable development.
Spatiotemporal Differentiation and Driving Mechanism of Coupling Coordination between New-Type Urbanization and Ecological Environment in China

Abstract:The coupling coordination between new-type urbanization and ecological environment is important for regional sustainable development in China. This study proposes an evaluation index system of new urbanization and ecological environment, and adopts a coupling coordination degree model and a spatial error model to explore the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and driving factors of the coupling coordination degrees of new-type urbanization and ecological environment in 31 provinces of China from 2010 to 2019. The results show spatiotemporal differences in the overall coupling coordination degree, which has shifted from a mild disorder stage to a near disorder stage over the study period. The spatial distribution of the coupling coordination degrees by province has shifted over time from a pattern of low in the middle and high in both east and west regions to a pattern of stepwise decreasing from east, middle to west regions. The spatial correlation of the coupling coordination degrees is gradually weakening over time. Regional economic development, social security, technological progress, industrial structure, and education input can all contribute to inject strong impetus to the coupled and coordinated development of the two systems. As the development of impetus is still insufficient, it is suggested to pay attention to local conditions, strengthen inter-regional cooperation, and strengthen the superposition effect of multiple driving forces.

Abstract:The interplay between urbanization and ecological environmental efficiency has gained increasing significance in the context of sustainable development, as rapid urban growth poses challenges to resource consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and the overall ecological well-being of urban areas. Understanding and analyzing the coordinated development of urbanization and ecological environmental efficiency, as well as assessing the influence of drivers on this relationship, is crucial for developing effective policies and strategies that promote environmentally sustainable urban development. This study establishes an urbanization index based on four key aspects: economy, society, population, and ecology. This investigation focuses on 30 provinces in China spanning from 2011 to 2020. The following methods are applied: global Malmquist–Luenberger productivity index, entropy method, TOPSIS model, coupled coordination degree model, panel-corrected standard error (PCSE), and feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) models. The empirical results demonstrate a favorable level of coordinated development between urbanization and the ecological environment overall, with more pronounced regional evolution trends. The trade openness, energy structure, and digitalization level play significant roles in effectively promoting the coordinated development of urbanization and the ecological environment to varying extents. The growth of trade openness and digitalization level promote coordinated development between urbanization and the ecological environment by 0.125 and 0.049, respectively. However, the increase in the energy structure decreases it by 0.509. These results have significant implications for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that prioritizes ecological environmental protection in urbanization efforts. This study underscores the importance of sustainable urban development strategies to ensure long-term ecological and environmental sustainability.

Analysis of Driving Forces of Urban Land Expansion in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Region

Abstract:Urbanization is one of most important characteristics of global development.The rapiddevelopment of urbanization leads to the expansion of urban land use.Suzhou-Wuxi-ChangzhouRegion is one of the areas with the highest rate of economic growth and urbanization developmentin China.Based on bivariate correlation and partial correlation obtained in SPSS,we analyzed thecharacteristics of urban land expansion in this region during 1995~2005,and quantify itsrelationship with the driving factors.In recent 11 years,the total urban land area has increasedlinearly at an annual rate of around 45.55km2,or 12.83%of the total urban area.The regressionanalysis reveals that urban expansion was driven by regional gross domestic product(GDP),urbannon-agricultural population,investment of fixed assets,annual mean salary of employees and realestate investment.In particular,the first two factors,(the growth of regional GDP and urbannon-agricultural population)were the key driving forces of urban land growth,as revealed by themulti-regression.The partial correlation coefficient of regional GDP and non-agriculturalpopulation was 0.514 and 0.535 respectively,being much higher than other factors.It is thereforeconcluded that GDP and urban non-agricultural population are two explaining indicators of urbanland expansion of the region.They can not only directly drive the expansion of urban land use,butalso indirectly affect it through stimulating investment of fixed assets,annual mean salary ofemployees and real estate investment.Influenced by population growth and rapid development ofprivate economy,the growth rates of per capita urban land area in mostly county-level cities are muchhigher than those of prefecture-level cities in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Region.One reason is thatrapid development of private enterprises needs more factory buildings and employee dormitories;theother is excessive pursuit of high green ratio.Rapid development of private economy leads toscattered distribution and low efficiency of land utilization in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Region.Inthis paper,we suggest that the government should establish standard factory buildings and multistorymill buildings to enhance the intensive degree of land utilization.

Abstract:As an important platform for participating in international competition and cooperation, supporting economic growth and promoting coordinated regional development, urban agglomeration plays an important role in China’s economic, social and urbanization development. At this time, the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration (GZPUA), as the second largest urban agglomeration in western China, has a moderate population density. The high demand and high input of resources for population growth make the regional ecological destruction and environmental pollution more prominent. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to study the coordinated development of urbanization and ecological environment in GZPUA. By using the panel data of the GZPUA of China between 2008 and 2017, this study constructed evaluation index system of new-type urbanization and ecological environment quality and calculated the weights of the indices within the evaluation system via the improved entropy weight method, finally determined the new-type urbanization and ecological environment quality of each city. Then the coupling coordination degree model was used to analyze the coupling coordination relationship between two systems of GZPUA and their coupling stages and levels. In addition, the driving mechanism of their coordination degree was explored by using geographic detector method. The results show that: 1) The GZPUA new-type urbanization quality is characterized by both slow growth except Xi’an by a rapid increase. The ecological environment quality is characterized by both slow growth and fluctuations, except Qingyang by a decrease. There are spatial differences between the quality of new-type urbanization and the quality of ecological environment. 2) The 11 cities can be divided into high-high type (Xi’an), high-low type (Xianyang, Yuncheng, Linfen), low-low type (Pingliang, Weinan), and low-high type (Shangluo, Tianshui, Qingyang), different types should take different development paths. 3) The coordination degree between urbanization and ecological environment quality in GZPUA showed an upward trend, and formed a spatial distribution pattern with Xi’an as the core and decreasing to the outer circle cities, with regional differences. 4) The coordinated development of new-type urbanization and ecological environment is a process in which various driving factors act on different driving forces. These driving forces can be summarized as market driving force, endogenous driving force, outward driving force and administrative driving force. Based on the current situation of coordinated development of new-type urbanization and ecological environment in the GZPUA, it is recommended to promote the coordinated development of urbanization and ecological environment according to local conditions, strengthen the urbanization market mechanism, and optimize the industrial layout. Further, guide the flow of various factors across regions, strengthen technological innovation on the basis of breaking regional divisions, narrow the gap between urban and rural areas, establish the concept of coordinated development, and give play to the government’s “visible hand” role.

Abstract:Urban agglomeration is the core area of not only regional economic development and urbanization but also human–land contradiction. Based on the population–economy–society–spatial model and the pressure–state–response model, this study develops an evaluation index system for the urbanization and eco-environment of 13 urban agglomerations in China. The urbanization index and eco-environment index are determined using the coefficient of variation method. The coupled coordination of the two indices is measured with the coupled coordination model, and the influence of the indicator factors is calculated with a geographical detector. The results reveal the following: (1) The urbanization indices of the 13 urban agglomerations in China increase year by year, and the spatial distribution pattern is high in the east and low in the west. (2) The eco-environment index shows an “S-shaped” variation trend, and the spatial difference between urban agglomerations gradually decreases. (3) The coupled coordination is mainly characterized as a mild imbalance, and the spatial distribution pattern is “balance in the east and imbalance in the west”. (4) The coupled coordination degree between urbanization and eco-environment is affected by many factors. Among such factors, economic urbanization, social urbanization, spatial urbanization, and eco-environment response are the main controlling factors. The impact of population urbanization, eco-environment pressure, and eco-environment state presents a gradual increase.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization destroys the structure and function of the ecosystem and causes severe ecological and environmental problems. Consequently, the deterioration of the ecological environment also hinders the quality of urban development and restricts the sustainable development of cities. To deeply explore the coordination measurement and the temporal and spatial heterogeneity between urbanization and ecological environment, we used the statistical data of Shaanxi Province from 2005 to 2019 as an example, and applied the index system construction method to evaluate the comprehensive level of urbanization and ecological environment. Further, we used the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM), relative development degree model (RDDM), and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) to explore the dynamic changes and spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the coupling relationship between urbanization and the ecological environment in the study area. The results show that: (1) the overall urbanization and ecological environment of Shaanxi Province show a steady upward trend. The level of urbanization remains stable, and the growth rate of the ecological environment is lower than that of urbanization. (2) The CCD of Shaanxi Province generally presents the evolution law of “basic disharmony-basic coordination-medium coordination-high coordination.” The spatial difference of coupling and coordination development state in different regions is significant, generally shown as “lagging urbanization-synchronous development-lagging ecological environment.” (3) During the study period, there was a significant interaction between urbanization and the influencing factors of the ecological environment, which regulate against each other. The contribution of the ecological environment to urbanization was suitable as a whole, while the construction of urbanization inhibited the ecological environment to varying degrees. This study provided a scientific basis for analyzing the coordination degree and the temporal and spatial differences between urbanization and the ecological environment, and offered practical guidance for formulating and implementing regional urbanization and sustainable environmental development countermeasures.

Abstract:Revealing the temporal and spatial changes on built-up land expansion and population growth is extremely important for city's sustainable development. Although the differences in land and population growth have been examined, the range and the influential factors of such a gap have not been fully studied. In this research the ratio of the land expansion rate to the population growth rate is used as coordination degree to identify the trend of the “land-population” coordination with the case study of the Yangtze River Delta Region, China by means of spatial analysis and regression. Results indicate notable built-up land expansion and demographic change in the research area. The coordination degree increased from a value of 2.28 in Period I (1990–2000) to 3.12 in Period II (2001–2014), further away from the ideal value (i.e. 0.8–1.4). Overall, the coordination level in central region of the study area is better than those of the North and the South. Regression analysis shows that neighborhood and per capita GDP are two significant influential factors of built-up land expansion and population growth in both periods, and that the impact of “neighborhood” has intensified over time. These findings demonstrate that socioeconomic situation of geographically neighboring cities contribute a lot to the coordinated development of the local population and land.

Abstract:Land and population are two key and interactive factors in urbanization, and it’s extremely important to coordinate them for healthy urbanization. To measure and analyze their coupling relationship, this study es-tablished an index system including population structure, life quality, urban size, input and output on the basis of defining population urbanization and land urbanization. Then this system was applied empirically in Nan-chang, the capital city of Jiangxi province located in the middle of China. The results showed that:1) Both the index of population urbanization and that of land urbanization were rising continuously with fluctuations, and there was a shift from land lagging urbanization to population lagging urbanization in Nanchang between 2002 and 2011. 2) The coordination relationship between population urbanization and land urbanization changed from deterioration to optimization, resulting in the transfer of urban development status from high inconsis-tence to week coordination. The study also discussed the reasons behind the results, indicating the discordance of urban development was induced by both external institutional systems and internal basic conditions. It sug-gested that it’s necessary to take measures to coordinate the relationship between land and population to pro-mote healthy urbanization.
The Spatial–Temporal Characteristics and Driving Forces of the Coupled and Coordinated Development between New Urbanization and Rural Revitalization

Abstract:In the 21st century's global push for sustainable development, strategies for new urbanization and rural revitalization in China have transitioned from traditional geographic expansion to a focus on high-quality integration across ecological, social, and economic dimensions. Employing advanced methods such as the entropy weight TOPSIS, coupling coordination model, kernel density estimation, Markov chain, and geographic detector, this study comprehensively explores the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving mechanisms of urban–rural integration in China from 2001 to 2022. Key findings reveal increasing coupling coordination degrees in each province, with significant spatial variations. Notably, during the 15th Five-Year Plan, all regions, including eastern, central, and western areas, exhibited low-level coupling coordination. However, a decreasing ladder-like distribution emerged during the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plans, forming a development pattern centered on eastern coastal regions and spreading inland. The central regions experienced significant changes in development kernel density, while the national eastern and western regions remained relatively stable. Looking ahead, highly coupled regions are expected to maintain leadership, positively influencing neighboring areas and propelling overall urban–rural development towards sustainable goals. Conversely, low-level coupled regions require deeper reforms for leap-frog development. The core driving forces behind spatiotemporal differences in coupling coordination degrees involve innovation within the environment, government capabilities, openness to the outside world, and population agglomeration. Secondary roles are played by factors like non-agricultural industrialization, per capita GDP, government investment, and market conditions, while education, healthcare, transportation, and natural resource levels act as bridges in spatiotemporal differentiation. Overall, this study provides a concise spatiotemporal interpretation and strategic recommendations for urban–rural sustainable integration development, advancing towards a more harmonious, green, and just future in alignment with the core principles of sustainable development.

Abstract:Exploring the spatial pattern and development strategies of urbanization from the perspective of the multi-dimensional coordination of population, economy, and land is the key to solving the problems of the urban–rural gap and human–land contradiction. This paper analyzed the spatial agglomeration of population, economy, and construction land area growth rates and explored their coordinated development in Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2010 to 2020 by using the spatial autocorrelation model, elasticity coefficient model, and coupling coordination model. The results are as follows: (1) China's population, economy, and construction land area were all growing, with the highest economic growth and the lowest population growth, and most prefecture-level cities in central and northeastern China had negative population growth. (2) The growth rates of the population, economy, and construction land in Chinese prefecture-level cities had significant positive spatial clustering characteristics; the spatial agglomeration of the economy was the most prominent and the high-value areas were mainly concentrated in western China. (3) The elasticity coefficients between the population, economy, and construction land in most Chinese prefecture-level cities indicate uneven development of urbanization, manifested as population growth lagging behind construction land expansion and further lagging behind economic development. (4) More than 56% of Chinese prefecture-level cities have uncoordinated development among the population, economy, and construction land mainly distributed in northeast China and central China. The results can provide references and decision-making support for promoting the sustainable development of China's new urbanization.

Abstract:For high-quality growth to occur, new-type urbanization and environmental preservation must coexist and advance at the same time. The focus has shifted to maintain a balance between ecological quality and urbanization growth. This study focuses on the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China, utilizing panel data from 41 cities in the YRD spanning from 2009 to 2021 to construct evaluation index systems for new (type of) urbanization and ecological environment. To analyze spatial-temporal evolutionary aspects and determine the causes of the degree of coupling coordination between new-type urbanization and the ecological environment, methodologies such as the entropy weight method, coupled coordination degree model, and Tobit regression approach were used. The results show that (1) economic urbanization has experienced the most growth in the level of new-type urbanization in the YRD, which has been steadily increasing. Moreover, the ecological environment evaluation score increased from 0.581 in 2009 to 0.701 in 2021, revealing a cyclical pattern of increase and decrease in its evolutionary trajectory. (2) Within the scope of the study, the overall coupling coordination degree between new-type urbanization and ecological environment has increased, with the average value rising from 0.512 in 2009 to 0.540 in 2021. In comparison to Lishui, Huaibei, Huainan, Ningbo, Chuzhou, and Bozhou saw a greater increase in coupling and coordination degree, with pronounced variations and clustering patterns visible in their spatial distribution. (3) According to the Tobit regression analysis, the level of economic development, technological progress, industrial concentration, global openness, and educational investment had significant positive effects on the degree of coupled coordination between new-type urbanization and the ecological environment in the YRD, whereas the level of information technology did not reach the significance threshold. The findings of the study are crucial for establishing a regional framework for green and sustainable development, as well as for facilitating the coordinated growth of new-type urbanization and ecological environment. These findings hold great potential for driving positive change in both urban development and environmental conservation efforts.

Abstract:The rational matching of urban land and population has become an important prerequisite for sustainable urban development. In this paper, the traditional urban land scale elasticity model was improved, and combined with the gravity model, the spatial interaction between land expansion and population change in 618 cities in China during the period 2006–2021 was investigated. The geographical detector method was used to reveal what drives them. The main results were as follows: (1) China’s urban land expansion rate was 1.83 times faster than the population growth rate during 2006–2021. After the implementation of the New-type Urbanisation Plan in 2014, the ratio of land expansion rate to population growth rate dropped from 2.46 to 1.12. (2) Among the six interaction types identified, land rapid expansion is the most significant, accounting for 41.59% of urban samples. (3) The geographical detector method found that the indicators of urban development rights such as the level of administrative hierarchy and the ratio of fiscal revenue to fiscal expenditure were the main factors affecting land expansion and that economic indicators such as gross domestic product and employment opportunities dominated population change. Fortunately, the intervention role of urban development rights has declined, and the constraints of market mechanisms, resources and environment have gradually become the dominant factors in urban land expansion and population change. These findings provide a theoretical basis for alleviating the human–land contradiction and achieving sustainable urban development.
Investigations on Driving Factors of Coordination Development of Rural Infrastructure and Ecological Environment: The Case of Western China

Abstract:The coordinated development of rural infrastructure and ecological environment is an effective way to improve agricultural productivity. The primary focus of the current research is how the two can work together to promote regional economic development in rural areas and in related fields. This study takes the western region as the research object, constructs an evaluation index system for rural infrastructure and ecological environment, and uses the Min-max Scaling method, coupling coordination model, gray GM (1, 1) model, and standard deviation elliptical model for evaluation. The trends and driving factors for the coordinated development of rural infrastructure and ecological coupling in the region from 2012 to 2021 are analyzed. The main results are as follows: (1) Except for Tibet, Qinghai, and Ningxia, the coupling degree of rural infrastructure and the ecological environment in western China reached the maximum level during the research period, also the coordination degree showed a gradual upward trend. (2) A prediction for the development and evolution of rural infrastructure and the ecological environment in western China indicates a trend of agglomerative development in the southern region. (3) By strengthening the construction of reservoirs, improving sanitary conditions, improving cultivated land use area and forest coverage, and controlling soil erosion, the coordinated development of the two can be effectively promoted. The purpose of this study is to promote the sustainable and coordinated development of rural infrastructure and ecological environment, and to provide a reference for policy formulation in the relevant sectors and other countries and regions with similar situations.

Abstract:Scientific evaluation of the interaction between urbanization and the eco-environmental system in Central China is of great significance. To optimizing the quality of urbanization and improving the eco-environmental state. As a case study of Central China, this research attempts to build a set of analytical systems to realize the integrated deconstruction from analyzing comprehensive evaluation indexes, quantification of coupling coordination, spatiotemporal evolution traits, decoupling path exploration to influential factor analysis. It tries to clarify the differences between cities, identify problematic areas, and propose targeted improvement measures. The outcomes show that the urbanization level of the cities in Central China has been improved significantly. In contrast, their eco-environmental levels are fluctuating, with the growth rate lower than that of urbanization. The coordination level between the two systems is rising, changing from primary dysfunction to intermediate coordination. The coordination level is characterized by obvious spatial association dominated by Types H-H and L-L and ever-increasing agglomeration. The decoupling between the two systems only falls into two types: strong decoupling and relative decoupling with expansion, indicating a negative effect between them. There is a problem regarding negative urbanization development. The factors including energy consumption, investment in fixed assets, opening to the outside world, technological progress, and government management capabilities all have an impact on the coordination of the two with divergent significances.

Abstract:Examining the spatiotemporal dynamics and determinants of land urbanization is critical for promoting healthy urban development and the rational use of land resources. Based on the dataset consisting of land use change data and selected factors in 2010 and 2020, this study used visual analysis to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of land urbanization across prefecture-level cities in China. Meanwhile, the driving forces underlying land urbanization were examined by using geographical detector technique. Following are the findings: 1) we find that there exist notable spatial variances in land urbanization across prefecture-level cities. Currently, the differentiation in land urbanization between the northern and southern cities is more pronounced than that between the coastal and inland cities, or between the eastern and western cities. Prefecture-level cities located in central and western China have experienced the most rapid growth in land urbanization. Conversely, the growth rate in northeastern China is the lowest, while the velocity in eastern China remains relatively stable. By using spatial autocorrelation analysis, this study reveals that the land urbanization level in prefecture-level cities has significant spatial agglomeration. 2) We further find that land urbanization in China is influenced by factors related to urban land supply and demand, and urban population growth, economic growth, land financial and political incentive have greater impact on land urbanization than other factors. 3) We also find that the impacts of determinants on China's land urbanization vary over time, the explanatory power of economic development increased, while the explanatory power of state forces declined. We argue that integrating the supply and demand factors of land urbanization can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the driving mechanisms underlying land urbanization in China and other transitional countries, and help decision-makers in these countries formulate more detailed and specific land urbanization policies.

Abstract:Urbanization is an inevitable process in human social progress; additionally, the ecological environment is the carrier and foundation of human social development. Considering central Shanghai, China, as an example, this study quantitatively analyzed the coupling coordination relationship between urbanization and the ecological environment based on urban functional zones; remote sensing images, Open Street Map roads, and point of interest data were analyzed for the urban functional zones via the remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI), comprehensive nighttime light index (CNLI), and coupling coordination degree (D). The results revealed that urban functional zones in central Shanghai were mainly mixed functional zones and comprehensive functional zones, which formed a spatial structure that gradually radiated outward from the urban core. Additionally, CNLI values were high; the proportion of CNLI between 0.6 and 1 was 94.37%. Moreover, the RSEI showed spatial differentiation; it was low in the center and gradually increased outward. Additionally, D was at the primary coordination level. The coupling coordination type in the core area corresponded to an ecological environment lag, which gradually transitioned to a state of systematic balanced development from the core area outward, but showed sluggish urbanization in some areas. This quantitative analysis of the coupling coordination between urbanization and the ecological environment based on urban functional zones provides effective scientific references for optimization of spatial planning.

Abstract:Coordinating urban development, food security, and ecological protection is a prerequisite for sustainable development. However, with a large population and rapid urbanization, there are still many challenges to optimize the urban-agricultural-ecological space. Here, taking China as a case in point, we explored the dynamic pattern of urban-agricultural-ecological space from 2000 to 2020. The driving mechanism of urban-agricultural-ecological space was simulated with the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) Model at both the national and regional scales. The results indicated that about 1/8 of urban-agricultural-ecological space types in mainland China have been changed from 2000 to 2020, most of which is the transformation between agricultural space and ecological space. According to the main type of urban-agricultural-ecological space change, there could be classified into four different zones from the east coast to the west inland in mainland China. As a whole, socioeconomic factors have more contributions to the urban-agricultural-ecological space changes, especially the GDP density for the transformation between agricultural space and ecological space (the relative importance was 61.0%), the proportion of residential area for the transformation between agricultural space and urban space (the relative importance was 38.1%), and the initial land-use type for the transformation between urban space and ecological space (the relative importance was 30.9%). These findings may support the scientifically delineation of urban space, agricultural space, and ecological space (three districts and three lines) in China.
