Abstract:Zirconia ceramics have become increasingly used as dental implant material which is mainly due to their "tooth-like" color, superior biocompatibility, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the bio-inertness of the zirconia surface limits its use for a wider range of clinical applications. To enhance the surface bioactivity, a combination of magnetron sputtering, and anodization has in the present study been used to deposit a homogeneous nano-porous coating (ZrNP) on the zirconia surface (forming ZrO2/ZrNP with a ZrNP pore diameter of 20-30 nm, and a ZrNP layer thickness of similar to 2 mu m). EDS and XRD analysis showed that the distribution of the surface chemical components, as well as the crystalline structure of the zirconia (ZrO2), remained unchanged. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of the ZrO2/ZrNP surface became significantly improved (as compared with a control group). In addition, the bond strength of the coating was decreased as a result of the anodization treatment. Moreover, both the Zr and ZrNP nanolayers exhibited improved proliferation and osteogenic properties in the in vitro cell experiment. Also, the ZrNP nanolayer was found to promote the biocompatibility and osteogenic ability to the largest extent. The ZrNP nanolayer did also provide numerous adhesion sites for MC3T3-E1 whereby the cell morphology could be enhanced. Additionally, the nano porous ZrNP layer improved the new bone formation around the zirconia implant and did robustly enhance the push out bond strength, thereby indicating the best osteointegration ability. In conclusion, a nano porous zirconium layer has been found to be very promising for the improvement of the bioactivity of the zirconia implant material.
Antibacterial performance of glucose-fructose added MW based zirconia coatings - Possible treatment for bone infection

Abstract:Use of ceramic coatings has increased dramatically in orthopedics by improving their wear resistance and consequent long-term stability. Such stability involves not only the strength of material but also its resistance toward bacterial attacks. Amongst all ceramics, zirconia is selected in the present study due to its white color and high value of hardness making it a potential candidate to be used as implants and their coatings. In the present study effect of varying microwave powers (i.e. 100W, 200W, 300W, 400W, 500W, 600W, 700W, 800W, 900W and 1000W) on sol-gel synthesized glucose and fructose added zirconia coatings has been investigated. Formation of mixed tetragonal - monoclinic phases has been observed at relatively low microwave powers, i.e. 100-500W. However, at 600-1000W phase pure tetragonal zirconia is observed without any post heat treatment. FTIR analysis confirms formation of tetragonal phase of zirconia at 600-1000W microwave power. XPS results confirm the binding energies of Zr 3d and O 1s of microwave assisted zirconia coatings. High value of transmittance, i.e. ~90%, is observed at higher microwave powers. Variation in microwave powers is observed to tune the energy band gap of zirconia coatings in the range of 4.2-5.1 eV. Dielectric constant of 8-10 at log f = 4 is observed. High value of hardness and fracture toughness i.e. 1231 HV and 24.85 MPam-1/2, respectively, is observed for stabilized tetragonal zirconia coatings. Stabilized glucose fructose added zirconia shows strong antioxidant activity. Zirconia coatings are tested against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria for their potential application to treat bone infection. Results suggest that stabilized tetragonal zirconia can be successfully employed for orthopedic coatings.
Microorganism Adhesion Inhibited by Silver Doped Yttria-stabilized Zirconia Ceramics

Abstract:The aim of this study was to incorporate silver nanoparticles into yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramic for eliminating microorganism adhesion on dental restoration graft. Y2O3 (3% mol) partially stabilized ZrO2 powder with particle size around 80nm was employed to fabricate tetragonal phase dominated YSZ ceramic block. Silver nanoparticles were efficiently loaded at pH 9.5 by NaBH4 reducing of AgNO3. The biocompatibility of silver incorporated YSZ was evaluated by MTT assay. Antimicrobial activities were quantitatively determined by optical density measurement and qualitatively analysed by scanning electro microscope. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that YSZ block containing 0.0047 wt% nanosilver, which is safe to mammalian cell, can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mitis and Candida albicans. The pristine YSZ disc had no effect on bacterial growth. This study suggests that silver nanoparticles incorporated into YSZ blocks possess a broad spectrum antimicrobial effect and may help prevent biofilm formation on their surfaces to improve implant survival rate.
Dicationic Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Coatings on Zirconia Surfaces: Physico-Chemical and Biological Characterization

Abstract:In the present work, dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated as multi-functional coatings on a zirconia (ZrO₂) surface to prevent biofilm formation and enhance the wear performance of zirconia while maintaining the material's compatibility with host cells. ILs containing phenylalanine and methionine were synthesized and deposited on zirconia. Intermolecular interactions driving IL deposition on zirconia were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Anti-biofilm activity and cell compatibility were evaluated in vitro after one and seven days, and wear performance was tested using a pin-on-disk apparatus. ILs were observed to form strong hydrogen bonds with zirconia. IL containing phenylalanine formed a stable film on the surface after one and seven days in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and artificial saliva and showed excellent anti-biofilm properties against Streptococcussalivarius and Streptococcussanguinis. Compatibility with gingival fibroblasts and pre-osteoblasts was maintained, and conditions for growth and differentiation were preserved. A significantly lower coefficient of friction and wear volume loss were observed for IL-coated surfaces as compared to non-coated substrates. Overall, zirconia is an emerging alternative to titanium in dental implants systems, and this study provides additional evidence of the materials' behavior and IL coatings as a potential surface treatment technology for improvement of its properties.
Adsorption of oral antibacterial agents on zirconia surfaces with different crystal systems

Abstract:Zirconia ceramics are widely used as dental prosthetics owing to their high biocompatibility, excellent mechanical strength, and aesthetic properties similar to color tones of natural teeth. However, there exists a growing demand for the facile attachment of antibacterial properties in long-term dental restoration. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the adsorption ability of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and benzalkonium chloride (BKC)-quaternary amines widely used as antibacterial substances in commercial toothpaste and other oral care products-onto zirconia surfaces with tetragonal and monoclinic crystal structures. Although tetragonal zirconia has been widely used in dental prosthetic materials such as crowns etc., monoclinic zirconia has also been used under oral conditions because of long-term implantation. When antibacterial molecule loading on zirconia powders under simulated oral conditions, it was revealed that monoclinic zirconia adsorbed approximately five times more CPC and BKC per unit area compared with that of tetragonal zirconia. Moreover, in tetragonal zirconia, the adsorption amounts of both CPC and BKC increased slightly with growing Y2O3 content as a stabilizer. This phenomenon was attributable to the formation of complexes between rare earth elements (REE) such as Y2O3 in zirconia and quaternary amines such as CPC and BKC. In this study, the antibacterial molecular adsorption ability of dental zirconia was observed, and new advantages of zirconia in dental applications were discovered.

Abstract:Abstract Dental caries is a commonly occurring non-communicable disease throughout the world that might compromise the quality of any individual’s life. Glass ionomer cements (GIC) are the most acceptable restorative materials due to their ease of manipulation, minimal tooth loss and least invasive strategy; however, they lack mechanical stability that has become a point of concern. Nanoparticles (NPs) are an outstanding option for modifying and enhancing the properties of dental materials. The focus of this study was to prepare novel, biocompatible titania dioxide (TiO 2 ) NPs as a dental-restorative material using an efficient probiotic Bacillus coagulans . The prepared NPs were incorporated into glass ionomer restorative material at varying concentrations and investigated for cell viability percentage, microhardness and surface morphology. Results indicated that pure 100% anatase phase TiO 2 NPs with particle size of 21.84 nm arranged in smooth, spherical agglomerates and clusters forms. These NPs depicted cell viability > 90%, thus confirming their non-cytotoxic behavior. GIC restorative materials reinforced by 5% titania (TiO 2 ) NPs demonstrated the highest microhardness in comparison to the control group and other experimental groups of the study. Surface morphology analysis revealed a reduction in cracks in this novel dental-restorative material supporting its compatible biological nature with better hardness strength and negligible crack propagation. Overall, these results indicated that TiO 2 NPs produced using a biological approach could be easily used as restorative materials in dental applications. Graphical Abstract

Surface Modification of Zirconia with Polydopamine to Enhance Fibroblast Response and Decrease Bacterial Activity in Vitro: A Potential Technique for Soft Tissue Engineering Applications

Abstract:The quality of soft-tissue integration plays an important role in the short- and long-term success of dental implants. The aim of the present study was to provide a surface modification approach for zirconia implant abutment materials and to evaluate its influence on fibroblast behavior and oral bacteria adhesion, which are the two main factors influencing the quality of pen-implant soft-tissue seal. In this study, polydopamine (PDA)-coated zirconia was prepared and the surface characteristics were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, a contact-angle-measuring device, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The responses of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) to PDA-coated zirconia; i.e., adhesion, proliferation, morphology, protein synthesis, and gene expression, were analyzed. Additionally, the adhesion of Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans to zirconia after PDA coating was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and live/dead staining. The material surface analyses suggested the successful coating of FDA onto the zirconia surface. The PDA coating significantly increased cell adhesion and proliferation compared with pristine zirconia. HGFs exhibited a high degree of spreading and secreted a high level of collagen type Ion FDA-modified disks. Upregulation of integrin alpha(5), beta(1), beta(3) and fibronectin was noted in HGFs cultured on PDA-coated zirconia. The number of adherent bacteria decreased significantly on zirconia after PDA coating. In summary, our result suggest that PDA is able to modify the surface of zirconia, influence HGFs' behavior and reduce bacterial adhesion. Therefore, this surface modification approach holds great potential for improving soft-tissue integration around zirconia abutments in clinical application. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Preparation and antibacterial evaluation of silver-doped zirconia for enhanced dental restoration performance

Abstract:Because of its superior strength, esthetic properties, and excellent biocompatibility, zirconia is preferred for dental prosthetic such as crowns and bridges. However, zirconia crowns and bridges are susceptible to secondary caries owing to margin leakage. Silver is a well-known antibacterial agent, making it a desirable additive to zirconia crowns and bridges for secondary caries prevention. This study focuses on imparting zirconia composite with antibacterial properties to enhance its protective capacity in dental restorations. We used the sol-gel method to dope Ag into zirconia. Silver-doped zirconia powders were prepared at Zr:Ag molar ratios of 100:0,100:0.1, 100:0.5, 100:1, 100:3, and 100:5 (respective samples denoted as Ag-0, Ag-0.1, Ag-0.5, Ag-1, Ag-3, and Ag-5) and were subjected to firing at various temperatures (400 °C-1000 °C). We performed x-ray diffraction to investigate the crystal phase of these powders and x-ray fluorescence and field emission scanning electron microscopy to analyze their elemental composition and surface morphology, respectively. Moreover, we performed spectrophotometry to determine theL*a*b* color values, conducted dissolution tests, and quantified the Ag content through inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. In addition, we studied the antibacterial activity of the samples. Analyses of the samples fired at ⩽600 °C revealed a predominantly white to grayish-white coloration and a tetragonal crystal phase. Firing at ⩾700 °C resulted in gray or dark gray coloration and a monoclinic crystal phase. The Ag content decreased after firing at 900 °C or 1000 °C. Ag-0.5 and above exhibited antibacterial activity against bothEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureus. Therefore, the minimum effective silver-doped zirconia sample was found to be Ag-0.5. This study allows the exploration of the antimicrobial potential of silver-doped zirconia materials in dental applications such as prosthdontical lining materials, promoting the development of innovative restorations with protective capacity against secondary caries.
Antibacterial Zirconia Surfaces from Organocatalyzed Atom-Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:Antibacterial coatings are becoming increasingly attractive for application in the field of biomaterials. In this framework, we developed polymer coating zirconia with antibacterial activity using the "grafting from" methodology. First, 1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-3-butylimidazolium chloride monomer was synthesized. Then, the surface modification of zirconia substrates was performed with this monomer via surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization for antibacterial activity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, static contact angle measurements, and an atomic force microscope were used to characterize the films for each step of the surface modification. The results revealed that cationic polymers could be successfully deposited on the zirconia surfaces, and the thickness of the grafted layer steadily increased with polymerization time. Finally, the antibacterial adhesion test was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the modified zirconia substrates, and we successfully showed the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

Abstract:Gallium‐doped zirconia coatings can be easily obtained by sol–gel spin coating method. The coatings are fully cytocompatible towards human gingival fibroblast and exert significant antimicrobial effect against oral pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Furthermore, proteomic analysis reveals that gallium‐doped zirconia coatings preserve the human oral microbiota. Despite the significant recent advances in manufacturing materials supporting advanced dental therapies, peri‐implantitis still represents a severe complication in dental implantology. Herein, a sol–gel process is proposed to easily deposit antibacterial zirconia coatings onto bulk zirconia, material, which is becoming very popular for the manufacturing of abutments. The coatings' physicochemical properties were analyzed through x‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy‐energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy investigations, while their stability and wettability were assessed by microscratch testing and static contact angle measurements. Uniform gallium‐doped tetragonal zirconia coatings were obtained, featuring optimal mechanical stability and a hydrophilic behavior. The biological investigations pointed out that gallium‐doped zirconia coatings: (i) displayed full cytocompatibility toward human gingival fibroblasts; (ii) exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans pathogen; (iii) were able to preserve the commensal Streptococcus salivarius. Furthermore, the proteomic analyses revealed that the presence of Ga did not impair the normal oral microbiota. Still, interestingly, it decreased by 17% the presence of Fusobacterium nucleatum, a gram‐negative, strictly anaerobic bacteria that is naturally present in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, this work can provide a valuable starting point for the development of coatings aimed at easily improving zirconia dental implants' performance.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of co-doping with aluminum or iron on structure, thermal behavior, morphology and biocompatibility of Y-TZP (yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals). Powders with stoichiometries Zr0.88Y0.12O2-δ and Zr0.85Y0.12M0.03O2-δ (M = Fe, Al) have been synthesized using a Pechini method. Powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dilatometry. They were further shaped into pellets and sintered at 1300 °C for 10 h. The sinters were investigated by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDXS). Sintered discs were inserted in oral mucosa of laboratory rats for six weeks. The local tissular reaction was evaluated by optical microscopy and histological study. Tested discs were investigated by SEM-EDXS and Raman spectroscopy. Small additions of aluminum and iron led to an improvement in powder sintering behavior of tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystals, while the morphology of the sinters is strongly affected. Biocompatibility tests shown that the tested samples tend to be surrounded by fibrous connective tissue. No major adverse reaction was evidenced for the discs inserted into the oral mucosa of lab rats. While single-doped zirconia with 6 mol % yttria is stable, additions of aluminum or iron led to formation of monoclinic secondary phase in the testing conditions. The lack of major adverse reactions in the surrounding tissues make these materials promising candidates for their use in dental prosthetics.

Optimized 3D printed zirconia-reinforced leucite with antibacterial coating for dental applications

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: This study aims to produce by robocasting leucite/zirconia pieces with suitable mechanical and tribological performance, convenient aesthetics, and antibacterial properties to be used in dental crown replacement.METHODS: Leucite pastes reinforced with 12.5%, 25%, and 37.5% wt. ZrO2 nanoparticles were prepared and used to print samples that after sintering were characterized in terms of density, shrinkage, morphology, porosity, mechanical and tribological properties and translucency. A coating of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) was applied over the most promising material. The material's antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity were assessed.RESULTS: It was found that the increase of ZrO2 reinforcement up to 25% enhanced both microhardness and fracture toughness of the sintered composite. However, for a superior content of ZrO2, the increase of the porosity negatively affected the mechanical behaviour of the composite. Moreover, the composite with 25% ZrO2 exhibited neglectable wear in chewing simulator tests and induced the lowest wear on the antagonist dental cusps. Although this composite exhibited lower translucency than human teeth, it was three times higher than the ZrO2 glazed material. Coating this composite material with SDF+KI conferred antibacterial properties without inducing cytotoxicity.SIGNIFICANCE: Robocasting of leucite reinforced with 25% ZrO2 led to best results. The obtained material revealed superior optical properties and tribomechanical behaviour compared to glazed ZrO2 (that is a common option in dental practice). Moreover, the application of SDF+KI coating impaired S. aureus proliferation, which anticipates its potential benefit for preventing pathogenic bacterial complications associated with prosthetic crown placement.

Effect of ultraviolet treatment on soft tissue healing and bacterial attachment to Titania-coated zirconia

Abstract:Zirconia is the most promising implant abutment material due to its excellent aesthetic effect, good biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. To obtain ideal soft tissue sealing, the implant abutment surface should facilitate cell adhesion and inhibit bacterial colonization. In this study, pre-sintered zirconia was placed in a suspension of titania (TiO2) and zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2) and heated in a water bath for dense sintering. A titania coating was prepared on the zirconia surface and subjected to UV irradiation. The surface morphology, elemental composition and chemical state of each group of samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray energy spectrometer (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The responses of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and common oral pathogens Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) to modified zirconia were systematically assessed. Our findings demonstrated that the surface of titania-coated zirconia after UV irradiation produced a large number of hydroxyl groups, and its hydrophilicity was significantly improved. Meanwhile, the UV irradiation also greatly removed the hydrocarbon contaminants on the surface of the titania-coated zirconia. The UV-treated titania coating significantly promoted the proliferation, spreading, and up-regulation of adhesion-related genes and proteins of HGFs. Furthermore, the titania coating irradiated with UV could reduce the adhesion, colonization and metabolic activity of S. mutans and P. gingivalis. Therefore, UV irradiation of titania-coated zirconia can promote the biological behavior of HGFs and exert a significant antibacterial effect, which has broad clinical application prospects for improving soft tissue integration around zirconia abutments. &#xD.

Abstract:Background Glass ionomer cement (GIC) serves as a crucial biomaterial in dental restoration, offering applications in filling, lining, and adhesive procedures. Nevertheless, its mechanical properties often fall short, particularly in regions subjected to considerable stress. To address this issue, zirconia nanoparticles are incorporated at specific levels. Aim To assess the antimicrobial efficacy and compressive resilience of GIC modified with zirconia nanoparticles synthesized through green synthesis methods. Material and methods Zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized via a green method utilizing aloe vera extract in solvent form. These nanoparticles were then mixed into GIC at different concentration levels. Group I incorporated zirconia nanoparticles at a concentration of 3%, Group II at 5%, and Group III at 10%, while Group IV was the control, consisting of traditional GIC. Following that, samples were prepared and underwent characterization through various analytical techniques. The ability to inhibit microbial growth and the compressive resilience of the groups were examined. Microbial inhibition against the bacterial strains was assessed through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and the ability to withstand compression was gauged by measuring the maximum force the specimen could endure before fracturing. Data underwent analysis with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 24.0, Armonk, NY). Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized to gauge average MIC values and compressive strength. Following this, Tukey's post hoc test was employed for pairwise comparisons. Results The findings indicated, incorporating zirconia nanoparticles into GIC led to an improvement in its antimicrobial effectiveness, with a noticeable enhancement observed as the weight percent (% wt) of the additive increased. This improvement was notably noticeable in its effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus, exceeding that of the control with a noteworthy distinction. Furthermore, there were significant enhancements in compressive strength, in Group I (180.48 ± 1.02), Group II (191.25 ± 0.52), and Group III (197.52 ± 0.75), compared to Group IV (167.22 ± 1.235), with significant disparities (p < 0.05). Conclusion The research illustrates that introducing green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC leads to heightened bactericidal potency and compressive resilience when contrasted with the control group (Group IV). Notably, the highest concentration of 10% demonstrated the most favourable antimicrobial attributes alongside enhanced strength. Consequently, integrating green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC holds potential as a proficient material. In future studies, there should be an exploration of molecular chemistry and bonding mechanisms to enhance our comprehension of its capabilities.
Novel Zircaloy nanomaterials with antibacterial activity

Abstract:The outcome of an implant procedure largely depends on the implant's surface properties. Biomaterials are now required to have surfaces with multifunctionality such as favorable tissue integration and the ability to combat bacterial adhesion and colonization. Herein, we report on a simple approach to improving the antibacterial properties of zirconia nanotubes (ZrNT) coatings via decoration with silver nanoparticles (AgNp/Ag2O). This was done by electrochemical anodization of Zr-Ag alloy at a constant voltage in a fluoride-containing electrolyte. The modified ZrNTs were characterized using SEM, EDS, ToF – SIMS, and XPS to determine their structural morphology and chemical composition, and were further subjected to antibacterial testing The silver and zirconium ion release behavior was also monitored via ICP-MS. ZrNT decorated with AgNp/Ag2O exhibited strong antimicrobial activity (> 99 % bacterial killing) against both S. aureus and E. coli. Antimicrobial tests indicated that the antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive pathogen S. aureus could be improved by a factor of 100 compared to unmodified ZrNT while the unmodified ZrNT showed already a comparable reduction of viable Gram-negative E. coli achieved with the additional AgNp/Ag2O decoration. This modification strategy illustrates a simplified and effective approach toward optimizing the interface between the host environment and the biomaterial surface to meet the very important criteria of biocompatibility and antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Herein, present study mainly focuses on the synthesis and characterizations of boron nitride reinforced waste zirconia (wZrO2) with different concentrations. Composites were prepared via a scalable solid-state reaction method. Various physical parameters such as density, ionic concentration, polaron radius, and field strength were evaluated. XRD results reveal crystalline nature with a major phase of tetragonal zirconia and as boron nitride is reinforced, the tetragonal transforms into a monoclinic zirconia. Interconnected spherical grains and nanosheets were observed using FESEM. Mechanical characterizations revealed the highest compressive strength of 266 MPa. The latent fingerprints were visualized using a composite on different surfaces, implementing the powder dusting and solution techniques. MTT assay was performed and revealed good biocompatible nature. These results reveal that composite is suitable for fabrication of bioceramics with acceptable mechanical and biological performances. The composite can also be utilized for latent fingerprint detection in forensic science.
Zirconia toughened fluorosilicate glass-ceramics for dental prosthetic restorations

Abstract:Background: Dental glass-ceramics have limited strength and are unsuitable for high-stress-bearing areas. Zirconia stands out as a popular choice for reinforcing dental glass-ceramics due to its biocompatibility and high fracture toughness. Objectives: The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of an increase in zirconia (25, 30, 35 and 50 wt%) on microstructure, chemical solubility, hardness, fracture toughness, and brittleness index of fluorosilicate glass systems for dental restorative applications. Material and methods: The fluorosilicate glass frit was obtained through the melt-quench technique. The glass frit was ball-milled with 25, 30, 35 and 50 wt % of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (G-25Z, G-30Z, G-35Z, and G-50Z). The composites were sintered to 1000 °C for 48h at a heating rate of 5 °C/min. The glass frit was subject to differential scanning calorimetry. Phase analysis and microstructural characterization were carried out. The crystallite size of zirconia and glass-ceramics, micro-hardness, indentation fracture toughness, brittleness index, and chemical solubility were evaluated. Results: Phase analysis reveals tetragonal and monoclinic zirconia with minor peaks of forsterite, fluorphlogopite, norbergite, and spinel. Their microstructures reveal the characteristic house-of-cards arrangement of fluorophlogopite crystals with dispersed zirconia. The results of hardness and fracture toughness show a statistically significant improvement with an increase in zirconia content. The crystallite size of zirconia and fluorophlogopite crystals with aspect ratio, brittleness index, and chemical solubility declined as the zirconia content increased. Conclusions: Increase in zirconia content from 25 wt % to 50 wt % in heat-treated fluorosilicate glass systems reveals non-reactive zirconia with a stable glass matrix and limits the growth of fluorphlogopite crystals with a house-of-cards microstructure. This results in a range of properties suitable for dental restorations of enhanced hardness, and improved fracture toughness. Despite these improvements, the material maintains its machinability with reduced chemical solubility.

Abstract:The bioinorganic material, such as fish mucus macromolecules crowned zirconia nanoparticles (ZrO 2 NPs) was synthesized via green methodology and has been investigated their efficacy on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains that inhabit the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tracts, and colon. The environmentally benign synthesis methodology was used for fabricating biofunctionalized ZrO 2 NPs with three different concentrations of C. striatus epidermal mucus. Spherical morphology with a size ranging from 7 to 25 nm of synthesized granular was identified by FESEM analysis. The powder XRD diffractions of synthesized ZrO 2 NPs were confirmed with the previously reported standard literature. Upon being subjected to a primary microbial study, the synthesized ZrO 2 NPs were shown to exhibit antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial pathogens. However, another Gram-negative bacterial stain, Proteus vulgaris shows almost similar efficiency to standard antibacterial drugs. Interestingly, all Gram-positive bacterial strains show a high zone of inhibition at higher concentrations of synthesized ZrO 2 NPs. In general, the antibacterial activity study proved that the synthesized biofunctionalized ZrO 2 NPs may be applied as an efficient health care beneficial material.

Abstract:Background: Dental components manufactured with zirconia (ZrO2) represent a significant percentage of the implant prosthetic market in dentistry. However, during the last few years, we have observed robust clinical and pre-clinical scientific investigations on zirconia both as a prosthetic and an implantable material. At the same time, we have witnessed consistent technical and manufacturing updates with regards to the applications of zirconia which appear to gradually clarify points which until recently were not well understood. Methods: This critical review evaluated the “state of the art” in relation to applications of this biomaterial in dental components and its interactions with oral tissues. Results: The physico-chemical and structural properties as well as the current surface treatment methodologies for ZrO2 were explored. A critical investigation of the cellular response to this biomaterial was completed and the clinical implications discussed. Finally, surface treatments of ZrO2 demonstrate that excellent osseointegration is possible and provide encouraging prospects for rapid bone adhesion. Furthermore, sophisticated surface treatment techniques and technologies are providing impressive oral soft tissue cell responses thus leading to superior biological seal. Conclusions: Dental devices manufactured from ZrO2 are structurally and chemically stable with biocompatibility levels allowing for safe and long-term function in the oral environment.

Abstract:For the past two decades, research is under progress seeking alternative materials for titanium and titanium alloys that are used as dental metal restorations. Favorable characteristics of zirconia (ZrO2) ceramic replaced metal-free restorations. This paper provides an insight on ZrO2 potential with a novel silane couplant as a material for dental applications, its mechanical properties, biological characteristics and optical properties. Review shows ZrO2's tooth like color, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and low plaque affinity makes as it a suitable implant material. It is designed to produce the shape and functions of natural teeth by filling, denture and implant. Hence, ZrO2 replaced the titanium implants as an alternate with integrated CAD/CAM techniques. The research on surface modification of ZrO2 and its capability to chemically activate the surface is critical in achieving adhesive bonding. The chemical inertness shows difficulty in achieving the reliable bonding between the resin composite cements and ZrO2 ceramics. The silanization of zirconia reported promising results confirming the stability of zirconia in the long-term.
