Abstract:In this work, an electrooxidation (EO) of amoxicillin (AMX) wastewater treatment was performed based on a three-stage electrochemical flow-through mode to address the emerging issue of antibiotic contaminants in water matrices. The removal of 96.1 % for AMX was obtained and followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics (kobs) with a value of 0.1197 min−1 and electric energy per order (EE/O) of 20.47 kWh/m3 at a current density of 8.49 mA/cm2. Compared with single-stage EFTM, the three-stage EFTM had an outstanding performance with a slight difference for AMX degradation and a significantly reduced EE/O. However, a marked difference was achieved in mineralization efficiency. It obtained TOC removal of 81.3 %, which was improved about 1.52 times that of the single-stage EFTM (53.5 %) when an analogous current was applied (500 mA) and reduced 1.77 times concerning the specific energy consumption (EC) of TOC mass removed (3.337 kWh/g TOC). It was moreover astonished that the EC per unit TOC mass removed decreased by increasing an initial quantity of TOC mass. More interestingly, the electrocatalytic of porous Ti–ENTA/SnO2–Sb benefited the production of OH in a three-stage EFTM at high current, which contributes a vital role in removing organic pollutants. Furthermore, scavenging experiments revealed that SO4− radical plays a dominant role as the main radical species compared to OH radical in indirect electrooxidation of AMX. As such, the results of this study indicate that both hydroxyl and sulfate radicals-mediated oxidation. Furthermore, the feasibility and stability of the porous Ti-ENTA/SnO2-Sb anode were evidenced by the practical application potential of a multi-stage flow-through system through its significant and stable AMX removal efficiency of at least 94.2 % during the long-term EO test of 12 h. Hence, the three-stage flow-through system furnishes the superiority with insight and application into the effective treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract:Antidepressant drugs play a crucial role in the treatment of mental health disorders, but their efficacy and safety can be compromised by drug degradation. Recent reports point to several drugs found in concentrations ranging from the limit of detection (LOD) to hundreds of ng/L in wastewater plants around the globe; hence, antidepressants can be considered emerging pollutants with potential consequences for human health and wellbeing. Understanding and implementing effective degradation strategies are essential not only to ensure the stability and potency of these medications but also for their safe disposal in line with current environment remediation goals. This review provides an overview of degradation pathways for amitriptyline, a typical tricyclic antidepressant drug, by exploring chemical routes such as oxidation, hydrolysis, and photodegradation. Connex issues such as stability-enhancing approaches through formulation and packaging considerations, regulatory guidelines, and quality control measures are also briefly noted. Specific case studies of amitriptyline degradation pathways forecast the future perspectives and challenges in this field, helping researchers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to provide guidelines for the most effective degradation pathways employed for minimal environmental impact.

Degradation of 4-aminoantipyrine by electro-oxidation with a boron-doped diamond anode: Optimization by central composite design, oxidation products and toxicity

Abstract:Electro-oxidation with electrogenerated H2O2 (EO-H2O2) was applied to treat acidic aqueous solutions of 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AA), a persistent drug metabolite of dipyrone, in sulfate medium. Trials were made using a boron-doped diamond anode in the presence of H2O2 electrogenerated on site. A 24 central composite design (CCD) was employed to evaluate the effect of four independent variables, namely current density (j), pH, 4-AA concentration and electrolysis time, on the percentages of degradation and mineralization, as well as on mineralization current efficiency (MCE). Predicted responses agreed with observed values, showing linear trendlines with good R2 and R2adj values. The degradation was optimum at j=77.5mAcm-2, pH3.5 and 62.5mgL-1 4-AA, leading to 63% and 99% removal after 3 and 7min, respectively. For those solutions, the largest mineralization was found at j=77.5mAcm-2, attaining 45% abatement at 175min. Low MCE values were obtained in all electrolyses. An initial route for 4-AA degradation is proposed based on one dimer and eleven aromatic and aliphatic intermediates detected in the treated solutions at pH3.5 by LC-MS. The initial 62.5mgL-1 solution at pH3.5 presented acute toxicity on Artemia salina larvae, with LC50=13.6mgL-1, being substantially reduced after 3 and 7min of EO-H2O2 at j=77.5mAcm-2 due to the formation of less toxic derivatives.

Abstract:Among the pharmaceutical compounds, tetracycline is the second most common group of antibiotics in terms of production and consumption worldwide, which their entrance in to hospital, domestic and industrial wastewaters pollute water sources and environment and finally leads to antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of electrochemical processes, Fenton, electro-Fenton (EF) and sono-electro-Fenton (SEF) separately and using Graphite (G)/β-PbO 2 anode to remove tetracycline from aqueous solutions. First, experiments for the electrochemical process by the response-surface methodology (RSM) using variables including pH (3–9), initial tetracycline concentration (20–100 mg/L), electrolysis time (4–45 min) and current density (0.5–4.5 mA/cm 2 ) was designed and the optimal conditions of these variables were 3.5, 25.6 mg/L, 42.6 min, and 1.98 mA/cm2, respectively. Under the optimal conditions of the electrochemical process, the effect of FeSO 4 with values of 0.02-0.08 g/250 mL in the Fenton process and the effect of H 2 O 2 of 0.05–0.5 mg/L in the EF process were investigated, and the optimal values of 0.06 g/250 mL and 0.2 mg/L was obtained for FeSO 4 and H 2 O 2 , respectively. Under optimal conditions, the removal efficiencies of SEF, EF, sono-electrochemical (SEC), electrochemical, Fenton and ultrasonic processes were 98.8%, 93.6%, 87.9%, 81.3%, 71.6%, and 11.5%, respectively. G/β-PbO 2 anode had only 37.5% higher removal efficiency than graphite anode. Under the optimal conditions of SEF process, changes in toxicity reduction by bioassay with E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were 86% and 58.4%, respectively, and the kinetic study showed that the removal of tetracycline by SEF process with R 2 =0.9975 followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Finally, intermediate compounds obtained from tetracycline analysis were identified using LC-MS analysis.

Abstract:The recent increase in the global consumption of antibiotics has led to faster entry of these pollutants into the environment as well as an increase in public concern about its impact on ecosystem and human health. Generally, due to high toxicity of antibiotics, biological methods are not used to treat these pollutants; therefore, advanced oxidation processes are recommended to treat and reduce the toxicity of the wastewater. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of photo-oxidation (P) and electro-oxidation (E) processes in the removal of amoxicillin (AMX) from wastewater, either as integrated or separate processes. Moreover, the effect of variables, including current density (2-100 mA/cm2), reaction time (2–120 min), and electrolyte concentration (100–1,000 mg/l) on antibiotic removal efficiency were investigated by Box Behnken design under response surface methodology, and optimal conditions were determined for pollutant removal. Then, the effect of AMX concentration and pH variables on the removal efficiency was investigated. The COD removal efficiency was also evaluated under optimal conditions, and eventually the toxicity and bioavailability of the effluent from the combined Photo-Electro oxidation process (PE) were examined. The optimal conditions for variables, including current density, reaction time, and electrolyte concentration for removal efficiency of 62.4%, were 94 mA/cm2, 95 min and 997 mg/l, respectively. Investigating the Amoxicillin and pH variables showed that by reducing the contaminant concentration and pH, the antibiotic removal efficiency increased. The toxicity and bioavailability of the final effluent show the reduction of both parameters in the PE reactor effluent. The PE process can provide an appropriate function to reduce the toxicity and antibacterial properties of effluent by removing more than 60% of amoxicillin and 30% of COD from wastewater.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals are often found in municipal wastewater due to human excretion and disposal of drugs into sewerage systems. Conventional wastewater treatment plants were not designed for pharmaceutical removal and, hence, pharmaceutical concentrations ranging from ng L−1 to μg L−1 are often detected in treated wastewater, with additional treatment required for full removal. This study has investigated the potential of Trametes versicolour laccase enzyme and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) mediator system to degrade sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, metronidazole and phenytoin. The best degradation was observed at pH 5 for both sulfamethoxazole (97% in 12 hours) and trimethoprim (44% in 168 hours), using an initial micropollutant concentration of 100 µM, an enzymatic activity between 110–115 U L−1, and an ABTS concentration of 200 µM. Phenytoin and metronidazole were not degraded. Deamination followed by hydroxylation led to the formation of the two major sulfamethoxazole transformation products (TPs), whilst hydroxylation and hydroxylation/demethylation mechanisms formed the majority of the trimethoprim TPs. The sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim TPs observed from the laccase-ABTS system were similar to the TPs obtained from degradation processes such as advanced oxidation or photodegradation. The laccase-ABTS system shows promise for control of emerging contaminants containing electron donating groups (such as amines and methoxy groups) on aromatic rings in wastewater systems.

Abstract:Amitriptyline (AMI) is one of the most common tricyclic antidepressant personal care medications. Due to its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation, release of AMI into the environment via wastewater streams in elevated levels could lead to significant ecological and human health impacts. In this study, the adsorption of AMI by montmorillonite (SWy-2), a naturally abundant smectite clay with sodium ions as the main interlayer cations, was investigated. Maximum AMI adsorption (276 mg/g) occurred at pH 7-8. After adsorption, examination of the adsorbent's X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that interlayer expansion had occurred, where chemical stoichiometry confirmed cation exchange as the principal adsorption mechanism. AMI adsorption reached equilibrium within 4 h, with kinetic data best fitting the pseudo-second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.98). AMI adsorption was unaffected by solution pH in the range 2-11, where adsorption was endothermic, and molecular simulations substantiated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric investigations indicated that the orientation of AMI molecules in the interlayer was via an amine group and a benzene ring. Overall this research shows that SWy-2 has significant potential as a low cost, effective, and geologically derived natural material for AMI removal in wastewater systems.

Abstract:The mineralization of tetracycline by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) as well as the study of the toxicity of its intermediates and degradation products are presented. Electro-Fenton (EF), anodic oxidation (AO), and electro-Fenton coupled with anodic oxidation (EF/AO) were used to degrade tetracycline on carbon felt (cathode) and a sub-stoichiometric titanium oxide (Ti4O7) layer deposited on Ti (anode). As compared to EF and AO, the coupled EF/AO system resulted in the highest pollutant removal efficiencies: total organic carbon removal was 69 ± 1% and 68 ± 1%, at 20 ppm and 50 ppm of initial concentration of tetracycline, respectively. The effect of electrolysis current on removal efficiency, mineralization current efficiency, energy consumption, and solution toxicity of tetracycline mineralization were investigated for 20 ppm and 50 ppm tetracycline. The EF/AO process using a Ti4O7 anode and CF cathode provides low energy and high removal efficiency of tetracycline caused by the production of hydroxyl radicals both at the surface of the non-active Ti4O7 electrode and in solution by the electro-Fenton process at the cathodic carbon felt. Complete removal of tetracycline was observed from HPLC data after 30 min at optimized conditions of 120 mA and 210 mA for 20 ppm and 50 ppm tetracycline concentrations. Degradation products were elucidated, and the toxicity of the products were measured with luminescence using Microtox® bacteria toxicity test.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (electrochemical, Fenton and electro-Fenton) in the removal of oxytetracycline using SS316 and SS316/β-PbO 2 anodes. This study was performed experimentally on a laboratory scale in a 250 mL reactor. First, experiments were designed for the electrochemical process using a central composite design, and the optimal conditions for the variables pH(3.53), electric current density(3.85mA/cm 2 ), initial concentration of oxytetracycline (20mg/L) and electrolysis time (42.35min) was obtained; then, under these conditions, the efficiency of Fenton process with FeSO 4 variable without the presence of electrodes was evaluated, and its optimal value was 0.3 g/L, and then in the presence of optimal values of the above 5 variables, the efficiency of electro-Fenton process with H 2 O 2 changes were investigated and the optimal value of 0.12 was obtained for H 2 O 2 . The removal efficiencies of oxytetracycline in electrochemical, Fenton, and electro-Fenton processes were 84.7%, 73.4%, and 98.2%, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the SS316/β-PbO 2 anode electrode enhanced the oxytetracycline efficiency by electron-Fenton process to 100%. The results of bioassay with microorganisms showed that the reduction of toxicity of the effluent treated by electro-Fenton process for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus was 84.5% and 69%, respectively.
Correlation between degradation pathway and toxicity of acetaminophen and its by-products by using the electro-Fenton process in aqueous media

Abstract:The evolution of the degradation by-products of an acetaminophen (ACE) solution was monitored by HPLC-UV/MS and IC in parallel with its ecotoxicity (Vibrio fischeri 81.9%, Microtox® screening tests) during electro-Fenton (EF) oxidation performed on carbon felt. The aromatic compounds 2-hydroxy-4-(N-acetyl) aminophenol, 1,4-benzoquinone, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid were identified as toxic sub-products during the first stage of the electrochemical treatment, whereas aliphatic short-chain carboxylic acids (oxalic, maleic, oxamic, formic, acetic and fumaric acids) and inorganic ions (ammonium and nitrate) were well identified as non-toxic terminal sub-products. Electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals then converted the eco-toxic and bio-refractory property of initial ACE molecule (500 mL, 1 mM) and subsequent aromatic sub-products into non-toxic compounds after 2 h of EF treatment. The toxicity of every intermediate produced during the mineralization of ACE was quantified, and a relationship was established between the degradation pathway of ACE and the global toxicity evolution of the solution. After 8 h of treatment, a total organic carbon removal of 86.9% could be reached for 0.1 mM ACE at applied current of 500 mA with 0.2 mM of Fe2+ used as catalyst.

Abstract:Antidepressant pharmaceuticals have recently been detected at low concentrations in wastewater and surface water. This work reports studies of the direct and indirect photochemical fate and treatment by advanced oxidation of three antidepressant compounds (duloxetine, venlafaxine and bupropion) in solutions of humic acid in order to elucidate their behavior in the natural environment prior to reaching a water treatment facility and potentially entering a potable water supply. Humic acid solution was prepared by adding to distilled water a known amount of organic matter as a photosensitizer. All three antidepressants react very rapidly with hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and hydrated electrons (e(aq)(-)) rate constants of similar to 10(8) to 10(10) M-1 s(-1), but significantly slower with singlet oxygen ((1)Delta O-2) (similar to 10(3) to 10(5) M-1 s(-1)). The steady-state concentrations of (OH)-O-center dot and (1)Delta O-2, in a sample of humic acid solution were measured and used with the second order rate constants to show that the hydroxyl radical was an order of magnitude more effective than the singlet oxygen in the solar-induced photochemical degradation of the antidepressants. Excited state dissolved organic matter also accounted for a substantial portion of degradation of duloxetine, decreasing its half-life by 27% under solar irradiation. Several reaction pathways and by-products arising from the photodegradation were identified using gamma-irradiation followed by LC-MS analysis. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Comparison of the degradation of multiple amine-containing pharmaceuticals during electroindirect oxidation and electrochlorination processes in continuous system

Abstract:The degradation of pharmaceuticals by electrochemical oxidation (EO) in simulated wastewater containing multiple pharmaceuticals was compared between batch and continuous reactors. Despite the excellent efficiencies achieved in batch experiments, the practical/large-scale applications of EO-degrading amine-containing pharmaceuticals has not yet been accomplished. This paper presents the results of continuous experiments with one of the most promising electrochemical configurations of Pt/Ti electrodes before proceeding to application. In the continuous electrooxidation system (without chloride), direct oxidation on the electrode surface and oxidation by hydroxyl radicals were the main pathways. Due to their short lifespans, the radicals could not be transferred to the bulk solution, and the removal of pharmaceuticals followed the order of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) > paracetamol (PAR) > diclofenac (DIC). In the electrochlorination system (with chloride), oxidation by residual chlorine was the main pathway. The removal of pharmaceuticals followed the order of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) > diclofenac (DIC) > paracetamol (PAR). High SMX removal was realized because of the high reaction rate of SMX with free chlorine. Among the pharmaceuticals, PAR had the lowest removal because it is a neutral species with a low mass transfer rate without the attraction of electrostatic force. These results are consistent with the predictions from our previous batch-scale study, which showed that the reaction rate of dissociated compounds could be increased by the addition of electrostatic force. Furthermore, multiple coexisting pharmaceuticals, such as SMX and PAR or DIC, may form dimers that can be transferred to complex structures and cause higher toxicity.

Abstract:Since the conventional processes employed in most wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) worldwide are not designed to entirely remove or oxidize emerging pollutants, which, due to their incidence and persistence, can cause damage to both the environment and human health, several options for their degradation and removal have emerged. Coupling the advanced Fenton oxidation process as a polishing or tertiary wastewater treatment alternative within conventional WWTP processes stands out among the treatment options. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to evaluate, at the laboratory level, the ability of the advanced Fenton oxidation process to oxidize triclosan, ibuprofen, DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), carbamazepine, caffeine, and acesulfame-K, which represent several groups of emerging pollutants in real wastewater from the second settling tank of a municipal WWTP. The compound used as a catalyst (Fe2+) supplier in the advanced Fenton oxidation process was ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4•7H2O). The results obtained upon application showed that the advanced Fenton oxidation process could simultaneously oxidize and remove practically the total concentration of the above-mentioned emerging pollutants, except for DEET (85.21%), in conjunction with the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and fecal coliforms (FC, pathogen group) in the effluent generated by the advanced Fenton oxidation process.

Abstract:The treatment of pharmaceutical industrial wastewaters, containing the antibiotic amoxicillin (218.29 mg L−1), via some advanced oxidation processes (POA), was studied. The H2O2 photolysis process presented the highest percentage of mineralization (97%), after the total reaction time (180 min). However, the photo-Fenton process showed the highest organic carbon removal rate, mineralizing 65% of the initial concentration, in 30 min. Because of this fact, this process was studied in more detail. The initial concentration of ferrous ions (0.03–1.00 mmol L−1) did not affect the performance of the photo-Fenton process, possibly operating using concentrations of below 15 mg L−1 (0.27 mmol L−1), that is the iron content limit for discharging wastewaters established in the Brazilian environmental legislation. Furthermore, experiments were performed according to the composite experimental design technique (Doehlert matrix), analyzing the following variables: (i) the inlet molar flow rate of H2O2 (FH2O2 ) and (ii) the initial concentration of ferrous ions ([Fe2+]). Besides that, the initial mineralization rate and the total organic carbon removal percentages, measured at 5, 10, 15 and 30 min of reaction, were chosen as the response variables. It was observed that FH2O2 was the most important variable in relation to the initial degradation rate. In the optimal conditions (FH2O2 = 3.27 mmol min−1 and [Fe2+] = 0.27 mmol L−1), the photo-Fenton process achieved a percentage of organic carbon removal of 84%, in only 30 min of reaction, presenting an interesting potential for real industrial applications, combined, or not, with conventional technologies (as biological treatments, for example).

Abstract:The widespread presence of organic micropollutants in the environment reflects the inability of traditional wastewater treatment plants to remove them. In this context, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as promising quaternary wastewater treatment technologies since they efficiently degrade recalcitrant components by generating highly reactive free radicals. Nonetheless, the chemical characterization of potentially harmful byproducts is essential to avoid the contamination of natural water bodies with hazardous substances. Given the complexity of wastewater matrices, the implementation of comprehensive analytical methodologies is required. In this work, the simultaneous photoelectrochemical degradation of seven environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals and one metabolite from the EU Watch List 2020/1161 was examined in ultrapure water and simulated wastewater, achieving excellent removal efficiencies (overall >95%) after 180 min treatment. The reactor unit was linked to an online LC sample manager, allowing for automated sampling every 15 min and near real-time process monitoring. Online comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC × LC) coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was subsequently used to tentatively identify degradation products after photoelectrochemical degradation. Two reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) columns were used: an SB-C18 column operated with 5 mM ammonium formate at pH 5.8 ( 1 A) and methanol ( 1 B) as the mobile phases in the first dimension and an SB-Aq column using acidified water at pH 3.1 ( 2 A) and acetonitrile ( 2 B) as the mobile phases in the second dimension. This resulted in a five-fold increase in peak capacity compared to one-dimensional LC while maintaining the same total analysis time of 50 min. The LC x LC method allowed the tentative identification of 12 venlafaxine, 7 trimethoprim and 10 ciprofloxacin intermediates. Subsequent toxicity predictions suggested that some of these byproducts were potentially harmful. This study presents an effective hybrid technology for the simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals from contaminated wastewater matrices and demonstrates how multidimensional liquid chromatography techniques can be applied to better understand the degradation mechanisms after the treatment of micropollutants with AOPs.

Abstract:Pesticides ensure greater productivity in less time; however, they spread beyond the perimeters to which they are applied to reach non-target organisms, thereby affecting plant, animal, and human health. Thiamethoxam (TMX) is considered to be one of the main agents responsible for poisoning bees and potentially contaminating surface and groundwater. Conventional water-treatment protocols are unable to degrade thiamethoxam; therefore, electrochemically advanced oxidative processes (EAOPs) have become promising alternatives owing to their ease of operation and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we examined the use of EAOPs to oxidize thiamethoxam in commercial Actara® and analyzed treatment efficiencies through phytotoxicity studies using cucumber and maize seeds as bioindicators. In addition, the cost of each process was analyzed based on the resulting current efficiency. The treated solutions were used to germinate seeds that were analyzed for total protein, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities. EAOPs were found to effectively oxidize TMX, with more than 50% degraded and 80% COD removed under all treatment conditions, even when the commercial product was used. The photoelectro-Fenton process using 10 mg L−1 FeSO4 and 100 mg L−1 H2O2 exhibited the best results, with 79% of the TMX degraded and 83% of the COD removed, additionally exhibiting the lowest estimated operating cost (USD 1.01 dm−3). Higher enzymatic SOD and CAT activities, total protein content, and H2O2 concentration were observed; however, no significant changes in MDA were recorded. This treatment protocol effectively oxidizes TMX and reduces its phytotoxicity in maize and cucumber seedlings.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants (ECs) usually refer to pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, personal care products, cosmetics, and medications. Due to the strong demand and quick growth of these businesses, the ECs have continuously been found in alarming amounts in groundwater, surface water, and wastewater. These ECs provide a significant non-esthetic threat to the ecosystem as a whole and can cause significant non-esthetic contamination when released into the aquatic environment. The conventional wastewater treatment techniques such as activated sludge, membrane filtration, coagulation, adsorption, and ozonation showed ECs removal performance to a certain extent. In turn, numerous emerging advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), especially activated persulfate oxidation, have garnered a huge amount attention due to their outstanding performance in the remediation of ECs. This article presents a systematic and critical review of electro, sono and thermal activation of persulfate for the treatment of ECs. The effect of key parameters such as electrode materials, solution pH, persulfate concentration, current density, and temperature on electro, sono- and thermal-activated degradation of ECs was discussed. The possible reaction mechanism of ECs degradation was also elucidated in detail. It was closed with a note on the situation now and the future course of electro, sono and thermal activation in ECs degradation applications. Experiments performed in recent studies show that with the aid of persulfate in electro activation, the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand can be achieved up to 72.8%. Persulfate activated by sono shows 100% removal efficiency of 1,1,1-trichloroethane and sulfamethoxazole. While for thermal activation of persulfate, 100% removal efficiency of carbamazepine, atrazine and sulfamethazine was achieved. All these vital shreds of evidence are substantial enough to picture the negative impact of ECs on the environment.

Abstract:This review addresses recent developments and challenges about electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) to favor market prospecting for EAO technology. The presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in the environment (wastewater, groundwater, surface water, tap water etc.), especially the pharmaceutical compounds, has been highlighted as a worldwide environmental problem, mainly due to their difficult elimination by conventional wastewater and water treatment processes. Aiming to solve the lower removal of a wide spectrum of CEC by conventional processes, the development of (EAOPs) has grown in recent decades, mainly because they are considered compact, scalable and automatable, and chemical-free. However, most studies were carried out using single contaminant in lab-scale which does not represent the reality of treatment systems. In this scenario, the treatment of complex matrices, multi-contaminants, lower contaminant concentration, energy consumption, fouling, and scaling still remain serious obstacles and challenges in the wider spread of the EAOPs. Therefore, considerable research and development efforts should include a deeper discussion on the treatment of complex water matrices, reactor design, hybrid processes, and what is necessary for enhanced process performance and to the scale up.

Abstract:Degradation of the antidepressant venlafaxine by a novel electrocatalytic ozonation process, electro-peroxone (E-peroxone), was studied. The E-peroxone treatment involves sparging ozone generator effluent (O-2 and O-3 gas mixture) into an electrolysis reactor that is equipped with a carbonpolytetrafluoroethylene cathode to electrocatalytically transform O-2 in the bubbled gas to H2O2. The in-situ generate H2O2 then reacts with the bubbled O-3 to yield (OH)-O-center dot, which can non-selectively degrade organic compounds rapidly in the solution. Thanks to the significant (OH)-O-center dot production, the E-peroxone treatment greatly enhanced both venlafaxine degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal as compared to ozonation and electrolysis alone. Under optimal reaction conditions, complete venlafaxine degradation and TOC elimination could be achieved within 3 and 120 min of E-peroxone process, respectively. Based on the by-products (e.g., hydroxylated venlafaxine, phenolics, and carboxylic acids) identified by UPLC-UV and UPLC/Q-TOF-mass spectrometry, plausible reaction pathways were proposed for venlafaxine mineralization by the E-peroxone process. The results of this study suggest that the E-peroxone treatment may provide a promising way to treat venlafaxine contaminated water. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation process (AOP) by UV/H2O2 presented excellent performance on removing trace pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Monitoring the removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals rapidly can evaluate the effectiveness of UV/H2O2 process. And evaluating the potential risks of this technology is essential to facilitate its engineering application. In this study, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, carbamazepine and citalopram, which have potential biological effect to ecological environment, were degraded by UV/H2O2 in wastewater. Results suggested that UV/H2O2 could degrade 5 pharmaceuticals effectively. An EEM-based degradation kinetic model was constructed by combining pseudo first-order kinetic patterns of pharmaceuticals degradation and multiple exponential decay pattern of fluorescence degradation. This model could estimate the removal of pharmaceuticals rapidly and exhibited excellent predictive capability (R-2 values > 0.90). Based on suspect and untargeted screening, 40 transformation products (TPs) were identified, with hydroxylation, (de)methylation and decarboxylation being the dominant pathways. Among them, 20 TPs were newly discovered. Furthermore, the predicted toxicity results from Ecological Structure-Activity Relationship (ECOSAR) model suggested that 37.5%- 42.5% of TPs exhibited higher toxicity than parent compounds. The increased toxicity of TPs of DCF and IBP could be attributed to decarboxylation. This study provides a promising and rapid method for monitoring the degradation of pharmaceuticals and estimating the toxicity of TPs. These findings facilitate further evaluation of the practicality and risks associated with the UV/H2O2 process for pharmaceutical removal in wastewater.
