Abstract:The livelihoods approach has become dominant for understanding poverty issues and advising on development policies. Spatial perspectives have been increasingly recognised to be important for understanding the increasing complexity and dynamics of livelihoods with regional development, urbanisation and close rural-urban interactions. This study further develops this perspective by highlighting the concepts of geographical context, location and urban hierarchy and adopts a multi-scalar analytical approach. The study examines the rural poor's livelihood strategies in Jilin Province of China based on two surveys conducted with about 3000 households in total and multiple logistic regression analysis. Our results demonstrate that half of the rural poor depend on incomes and livelihood strategies without labour input. From a macro-spatial view, the rural poor living in the Western and Eastern Areas, which have more challenging geographical contexts, are more dependent on subsidy income. From a micro-spatial view, rural livelihoods change, with spatial patterns depending on distance to urban areas and the type of these areas; small and medium-sized urban areas are more important for the rural poor's livelihoods. Geographical context makes these urban effects on rural livelihoods spatially more heterogeneous. Spatial understandings of livelihoods research help to better target and tailor poverty alleviation policies.
Rural Land Transfer and Urban Settlement Intentions of Rural Migrants: Evidence from a Rural Land System Reform in China

Abstract:Using data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this paper provides new evidence on the impact of rural land transfer on urban settlement intentions of rural migrants. There was a rural land system reform in rural China that provided increased compensation for rural land expropriation and allowed the transaction of collective construction land for business purposes. We determine an increase in urban settlement intentions of rural migrants following the reform as an exogenous change in rural land transfer of rural migrants. We examine two mechanisms that may explain how the reform increased the settlement intentions of rural migrants, and our empirical evidence suggests that the reform increased social integration and reduced rural place attachment of rural migrants. Furthermore, we determine variations in the effect of the reform across migrants of various ages, social security benefits, and migration distances. Overall, this study extends the implications of the market-oriented rural land reform to sustainable and inclusive urbanization and highlights the role of social integration and rural place attachment in migration decisions.

Abstract:There has been a lack of clear understanding of the characteristics and correlates of rural residents' access to periodic markets. This study contributes to the new evidence for this by using data from face-to-face interviews with 4777 rural residents from 276 villages across China. The results show that village terrain is substantially associated with access to periodic markets. Rural residents living in the mountain, high plateau, and hilly areas are more likely to travel a long distance to the nearest periodic market than those living in the plain area. The proximity of the town center positively relates to access to periodic markets. In addition, we found a larger number of shop point of interests within a 2000 m circular buffer around the village center associate with better access to the neatest periodic market. These findings offer new insights for policymaking on improving access to periodic markets for residents in rural areas.

Abstract:Building livable rural settlements has been an important goal in China's rural revitalization strategy. However, few studies have conducted to explore the livability of rural areas in the metropolitan area like Beijing. This study establishes a comprehensive index system from a socio-spatial perspective to examine the rural livability and its influencing factors in Beijing, using the structural equation model (SEM). Empirical data was collected from 466 respondents in Beijing's twenty-five villages between October 2021 and February 2022. The results suggest that, in general, respondents are moderately satisfied with rural livability, and mountain residents tend to have higher satisfaction levels than residents in plain areas. SEMs analysis reveals significant associations between the five dimensions of rural livability (including infrastructure condition, village appearance, economic burden, social atmosphere, and public service level) and overall satisfaction. Public service level emerges as the most important determinant. Then, mediation effects are also identified. Specifically infrastructure condition and environmental quality can influence overall satisfaction by affecting village appearance, while public service level indirectly influences overall satisfaction through the mediation of social atmosphere. Additionally, there are differences in the impact of the factors influencing rural livability between the plains and the mountains, with the mountainous region experiencing a greater influence from multiple factors. The article contributes to the academic discourse on rural livability by providing empirical evidence on determinants of satisfaction in metropolitan area such as Beijing. The findings provide insightful policy suggestions for improving rural livability.

Rural Poverty and Mobility in China: A National-Level Survey

Abstract:Enhancing mobility for the rural poor is believed to be a vital component of poverty reduction policy in many countries. However, the relationship between poverty and mobility in rural areas is still arguable. This paper aims to provide new evidence by exploring rural residents' mobility in China, using nationwide survey data with 15,388 respondents from rural areas. The results of the analysis show the mobility of the poverty group is notably lower than medium-income and wealthy groups in rural China. The low level of mobility among the poorest group in both rural townships and farm villages is mainly affected by fewer travel demands for living and jobs in higher-order centres, low car ownership, unemployment and regional remoteness. In particular, for poor farm villagers, their mobility is limited by the availability of cars and public transport services. Higher mobility is significantly related to an increase in income for wealthy people living in townships. But for the poor, higher mobility would not guarantee a higher income. Other socioeconomic factors for example low labour skills and a lack of education have stronger relationship with their poverty. Transport policies designed to alleviate poverty in rural areas should be integrated with other policies such as education and labour training to be more successful. The findings and conclusion in this paper enhance our existing knowledge of the relationships between rural poverty and mobility and add value to both transport and poverty-reduction policies.
Association between Hometown Landholdings and Housing Quality of Rural Migrants in Urban Areas: Evidence from China

Abstract:Urbanization progress in developing countries is reflected in the urban living conditions of their rural migrants. Housing quality, in particular, is linked to migrants' social integration and development of human capital. In China, where urban housing is highly stratified by urban citizenship via the "hukou" or household registration system, improving housing quality is a top priority for the central government in its pursuit of human-centered urbanization. Despite some social and economic elements affecting migrants' housing quality being documented, few studies have analyzed the determinants of rural migrants' housing quality from the perspective of rural landholdings or possession of use rights of rural lands, which is endowed by the land system of China. Using large micro-data from the China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), this study investigates the association between hometown landholdings and rural migrants' housing quality in their host cities. The empirical results suggest that possessing rural landholdings in their hometown is negatively correlated with rural migrants' housing quality in their host cities, wherein rural migrants' hukou transfer intention is found as an intermediary factor. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of the relationship across demographic characteristics and regions was investigated. In addition, short-term revenue derived from hometown landholdings is also verified to have a very limited positive effect on migrants' housing quality. Land transfer policies customized for subgroups of rural migrants across sociological attributes and urban stratification are concluded finally.

Abstract:Effectively identifying and restoring the livelihood resilience of rural vulnerable populations are essential for consolidating poverty alleviation achievements. Previous studies have focused on low-income populations and have classified assistance for monitoring rural vulnerability. However, little research has defined the rural vulnerable and their key influencing factors from a multi-dimensional perspective. This paper constructs an indicator system for monitoring the return to poverty from a multi-dimensional perspective, based on survey data from rural households in poverty-stricken areas in 2005 and 2015. The dual cut-off method is used to identify the rural vulnerable and their key influencing factors from a multi-dimensional perspective. The results show that: (1) The incidence of multi-dimensional poverty has significantly decreased from 2005 to 2015; However, a vulnerable group still exists in rural China in 2015, and types of multi-dimensional poverty vary among regions. (2) Geographical environment and social resources are the primary influencing factors of rural vulnerability, followed by living standards. Income remains an important influencing factor of severe multi-dimensional poverty. (3) To restore the livelihood resilience of the rural vulnerable, targeted policies should be implemented based on influencing factors such as geographical environment and social resources. This study has significant reference value for policy implementation aimed at restoring the livelihood resilience of the rural vulnerable.

Abstract:Abstract Working-age migrants need to possess adequate social capital in order to secure a stable and satisfactory job so that they can pursue a better quality of life (QOL). The positive relationship between social capital and vocational experiences, including successful employment, has been well established. In this study we focused on testing a multi-step mediation model linking social capital with employment experiences, and further to QOL. Survey data from rural-to-urban migrants randomly selected from Wuhan, China were analyzed. Social capital, including bonding and bridging capital, was measured using the Personal Social Capital Scale; employment experiences were measured using five job-related items; and QOL was measured using the Brief Symptoms Inventory. Structural equation modeling analysis indicated that job security and job satisfaction were positively and significantly associated with QOL, and social capital measures were significantly associated with higher QOL (primarily for males). Furthermore, job security and job satisfaction fully mediated the relationship between social capital and QOL after controlling for covariates. Findings of this study suggest the significance of social capital, job security and satisfaction in improving migrants’ QOL, implying the importance of vocational experiences in mediating the effect from social capital to QOL. If the findings can be confirmed with longitudinal data, these factors should be considered in decision making to improve rural-to-urban migrants’ QOL in China.

Abstract:Rural livelihood transition towards non-agriculturalization, non-grainization and even anti-urbanization has become a thorny social problem that undermines farmland resources and worldwide food security. Based on a simulation survey, this study explored the risk preferences and the livelihood transition mechanisms of typical farmers in the hilly and mountainous region. The results indicated that: (1) 76.86% of rural households exhibited risk aversion tendencies, with 60.67% being highly risk-averse. The ranking of risk aversion among the three typical farmers is consistent with asset abundance, with non-agriculture oriented households > semi-farmer and semi-labour households > vocational farmer households. (2) The non-grainization of vocational farmer households is significantly and positively correlated with the family labour force, land management area, and housing assets, yet negatively correlated with risk preferences. Compared to traditional grain cultivation, non-grainization in the hilly and mountainous region possesses lower risks and higher profitability for vocational farmer households. (3) The total non-agriculturalization of semi-farmer and semi-labour households correlates negatively with land management area but positively with family income. (4) Anti-urbanization and returning hometowns for farming are still regarded as a livelihood fallback by the non-agriculture oriented households, but excessive gift expenditure has become a heavy burden in rural society. Therefore, practical and systematical countermeasures are proposed in this research to guide sustainable livelihood transition.

Abstract:Under the banner of integrated urban-rural development in China, increasingly more rural population is being concentrated into large, new residential areas. For resettled residents, the rural-urban transition is rapid and affects multiple facets of their lives. This paper explores the effects of the transition on residents' social relations, drawing on the experience of resettled villagers in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. It addresses three research questions. First, how are such effects manifested in residents' social interactions and sources of social support? Second, how are these effects vary by socioeconomic attributes of residents? Third, in what ways have residents deployed the spaces of social interaction to enhance their own wellbeing? We show that for resettled rural residents, both the scope and composition of social relations have widened. In particular, those with higher income, increased household assets, or workplace located within the neighborhood are experiencing larger scope of social relations and more diverse subjects of interaction. Our analysis also points to less desirable consequences, as reflected in limited social engagement by residents with fewer financial resources and employment options.
Spatial differentiation of the impact of transport accessibility on the multidimensional poverty of rural households in karst mountain areas

Abstract:Transportation facilities are crucial prerequisite for enhancing economic development. In karst mountain areas, poverty of peasant households is multifaceted. Elucidating the characteristics of transportation accessibility and multidimensional poverty of peasant households is a crucial basis for combating poverty. Based on the cost–distance weighting method to evaluate the transport accessibility of farmers in the demonstration area, we constructed a sustainable livelihood framework for farmers in the demonstration area to examine the multidimensional poverty of farmers. Then, we used the geographic weighted regression model to explore the spatial differentiation characteristics of transport accessibility and multidimensional poverty. Farmers with high accessibility were primarily distributed near the village committee residents or on both sides of the road, while farmers with low accessibility were primarily located in areas with large slopes and no access roads or access roads but poor road connectivity. In addition, farmers in the demonstration area were usually short of natural capital, the spatial distribution of material capital poverty was notable, the overall poverty value of financial capital was high, the overall human capital was stable, the poverty value of social capital was markedly different, and high and low values interspersed each villager group. Besides, the multidimensional poverty value of farmers in the demonstration area was low (0.2714), which alternated in space and had no significant law. The poverty dimension of farmers in the demonstration area was 2.8242, demonstrating the spatial comparison of Huajiang town north of Beipanjiang in space. We assessed the impact of accessibility on multidimensional poverty of peasant households. The sample of promoting peasant households was marginally lower than that of restrictive peasant households. Besides, the spatial differentiation was characterized by the promotion of villager groups mostly distributed in Wuli village, Xiagu village, and Bashan village in the northern part of the demonstration area. Moreover, the villager group was primarily distributed in non-karst Mugong villages and Yindongwan village, Taiping village, and Chaeryan village in Fengcong depression. Using the quantitative measurement of transportation accessibility and multidimensional poverty and spatial heterogeneity research, we elucidated the measurement methods of transportation accessibility and multidimensional poverty, as well as their spatial differentiation rules, which have crucial practical significance for the formulation of regional anti-poverty policies.

Abstract:Research on shantytown transformation in the context of building sustainable human settlements has tended to concentrate on macro and objective factors. However, there is still room for expanding research on the livelihoods of residents in transformed poor communities of resource-based cities. This study is based on household survey data after the coal mine shantytown transformation in Datong, China, and uses the entropy method and Logit regression model to analyze the livelihood level and impact of livelihood capital on the choice of livelihood strategies of the residents after shantytown transformation. Based on the development characteristics of the Datong coal mining community, the traditional sustainable livelihood analysis framework is improved, constructing a livelihood capital evaluation system including natural capital, physical capital, financial capital, social capital, human capital and cultural capital. The research indicates that the livelihoods of the residents after shantytown transformation are in a state of low-value aggregation and differentiation, their livelihood strategies are still dependent on coal mining, financial capital and cultural capital have significant positive impacts on the residents' livelihood strategies of choosing coal mine-related industries, and males and elderly people have a greater likelihood of choosing coal mine-related industries. This study provides micro-level explanations for the livelihood status and livelihood strategy choices of residents after shantytown transformation in a resource-based city and provides policy enlightenment for local governments on how to promote the sustainable development of residents in coal mining communities.

Abstract:Mobility equity is one of the main issues in sustainable transport in both developed and developing countries. However, the existing literature in the field is dominated by the evidence from cities, while the evidence from rural areas remains scarce. In particular, mobility equity in rural areas in developing countries needs to be paid more attention since a large proportion of people in these countries still live in undeveloped rural areas. This paper contributes to new evidence of mobility and its inequity in rural areas of China. By using questionnaire data from a nationwide survey in 2016, this study investigates the rural residents' mobility characteristics with transport equity concerns and the determinants of mobility inequity. Individual people's trips amount, travel mode, and travel range are used as three main indicators for rural residents' mobility. A number of 12,524 residents from rural townships and 2,952 villagers were analysed. The results of analysis show those who live in poor areas or areas far from the city have low-level mobility. The socially disadvantaged groups had lower mobility, such as the elderly over the age of 60, women, and people from low-income households. Mobility inequity even exists in rural areas between township residents and villagers. The township residents have a higher level of mobility than rural villagers. Regression results show rural people's mobility is significantly affected by car ownership and public bus services. The policies designed to improve quality and equity of mobility in the rural areas in China should focus on not only the huge rural road constructions but also the improvements in public transport services and car ownership.

Abstract:Rural transformation, as a complex and compound process, can be dissected into different scale systems yet has not been systematically explored. This study takes Ruijin city, a hilly and mountainous area, as the example to explore the dynamic process of rural transformation and its cross-scale effects from the perspective of rural livelihood. The results showed that (1) On regional scale, institutional guarantees and policy reform were important factors influencing livelihood trajectory in the long term. The "top-down" process of rural reform needs to be embedded in the bottom-up engagement. (2) On community scale, village function is shifting from the single production to multi-function, and only by steering to the comparative advantages may villages achieve the goal of rural revitalization. (3) On household scale, rural livelihood tends to be pluriactive and is gradually differentiating from traditional smallholding to vocational farming or non-agricultural work according to livelihood assets. Further more, there existed a gap between village development and rural livelihood improvement in that farmers shared limited benefits from village industry development for multiple reasons. Therefore, a positive and inclusive rural transformation requires synergizing the government's top-down guidance with farmers' bottom-up livelihood needs in policy implementation, formulating an appropriate revitalization strategy according to the village category and development stage, and fostering the organic connection between village industry and small farmers through benefit sharing system construction and livelihood capital investment.

Abstract:This article examines the influence of social capital on the sustainable livelihood ability of rural households who are out of poverty, in order to promote the sustainable development of their livelihood. Based on the survey data of 371 out-of-poverty households in rural Jiangxi, we analyzed the relationship between social capital and households’ sustainable livelihood ability using “Ordinary Least Square (OLS) + robust standard error” regression models and quantile regression models. Households’ social capital was measured from the following three dimensions: social network, social participation, and social trust. The benchmark regression models showed that social capital index, social network, and social participation all had a significant positive effect on the sustainable livelihood ability of out-of-poverty households. However, the impact of social trust on sustainable livelihood ability was not significant. In addition, the quantile regression analysis results showed that social capital index, social network, social participation, and social trust all contributed the most to households with a low sustainable livelihood ability. Therefore, it is suggested to improve the social capital accumulation of out-of-poverty households from multiple dimensions, so as to enhance the sustainable livelihood ability of households and consolidate poverty-alleviation achievements.

Abstract:Public housing is a crucial means of providing sufficient housing solutions worldwide. However, many experts criticize the harsh architecture, the absence of public space, and lacking social infrastructure in these densely populated public housing projects in the Global North. In China, previous research has mainly focused on the effect of public rental housing (PRH) on real estate values, employment trajectories of rural migrants, and their life challenges. Few studies have explored the dynamic relationship between rural migrants, their daily social life, and how it interacts with the environment. By conducting multiple site observations and 120 semi-structured interviews with rural migrants living in three different PRH sites in Chongqing, this study addresses these gaps and uncovers the complexities of their daily social lives. The findings show that rural migrant residents have established neighborhood networks, provided mutual support, and developed a sense of place attachment to their new homes through various strategies in their daily social lives. The research enriches the theoretical debate on migration theories and deepens our understanding of rural migrants' social experiences in urban settings. It also sheds light on China's sustainable urban development and the overall well-being of migrating populations.

Abstract:Despite the increasing interest in understanding the mechanism of household livelihood decisions to increase household livelihood welfare, the combined role of livelihood capitals and human settlements in livelihood decisions is unclear. Therefore, in this paper we carried out extensive empirical research to explore the causal pathway between human settlements (including infrastructure, public services, and social governance) and livelihood capitals (including human, natural, physical, financial, and social capitals) on agricultural land transfer, taking employment choices as an intermediary factor. On this basis, this study analyzed the regional differences in the decision-making mechanisms of agricultural land transfer behaviors in eastern, central, and western regions of China through a multi-group structural equation model. The results demonstrated that capital accumulation can directly increase the possibility of agricultural land inflow (β = 0.130, p < 0.01), but can indirectly reduce the dependence on agricultural land by stimulating non-agricultural employment (β = −0.613, p < 0.01). The improvement in human settlement promotes the agricultural land inflow (outside the western region) and indirectly enhances the willingness to enter into agriculture. The employment choices play a significant mediating role by strengthening the livelihood capitals and weakening human settlements. To achieve the intense agricultural development and sustainable development of rural areas, the improvement of both rural human settlements and household livelihood capitals should be considered.

Analyzing space-time evolution of rural transition in a rapidly urbanizing region: A case study of Suzhou, China

Abstract:Influenced by globalization, rural transition in developed Western countries has experienced processes of productivism, post-productivism, and multifunctional development. By contrast, rural transition in most developing countries has been accompanied by rapid urbanization, which has become a core topic in geography research. As the world's largest developing country, China has undergone profound development since the reform and opening-up. Moreover, rural spaces in some eastern coastal areas have entered the stage of reconstruction after decades of industrialization and urbanization. This paper takes Suzhou as the case area and measures the process of rural transition from 1990 to 2015 by constructing an index system. It then analyzes the characteristics of space-time evolution using exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) methods to reveal the influence of economic and social development on rural transition. The results show that rural transition, which generally entails the weakening of rurality and enhancing of urbanity on a macro scale, tends to be heterogeneous across different regions on a micro scale. This paper argues that multifunctionality will be the main future trend of rural transition in rapidly urbanizing areas. The experience in Suzhou could provide an example for establishing policies on sustainable development in rural spaces and achieving urban-rural co-governance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this article, we provide a comprehensive examination of the spatial and career mobility of China's labor population. We integrate theories on stratification and social change and exploit the innovative design and measurement of the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey to minimize the undercoverage problem of the rural-urban migratory experience. Our analysis provides several fresh findings: (1) at-birth rural household registration (hukou) status leads to a greater probability of spatial mobility and career advancement than at-birth urban hukou status does; (2) education and gender differentiates rural-origin people, increasing the heterogeneity of urban labor and decreasing the heterogeneity of rural labor; (3) hukou policy relaxation favors later cohorts over earlier cohorts; and (4) among demographically comparable people, having experienced spatial mobility is correlated with having career advancement experience. Work organizations are found to be the arena where the two dimensions of mobility can happen jointly. Our findings provide a rich context for understanding the management and organization of Chinese labor.
