Abstract:Objective: Yoga targets psychological processes which may be important for long-term weight loss (WL). This study is the first to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of yoga within a weight management program following WL treatment. Methods: 60 women with overweight or obesity (34.3±3.9 kg/m2, 48.1±10.1 years) were randomized to receive a 12-week yoga intervention (2x/week; YOGA) or a structurally equivalent control (cooking/nutrition classes; CON), following a 3-month behavioral WL program. Feasibility (attendance, adherence, retention) and acceptability (program satisfaction ratings) were assessed. Treatment groups were compared on weight change, mindfulness, distress tolerance, stress, affect, and self-compassion at 6 months. Initial WL (3-mo WL) was evaluated as a potential moderator. Results: Attendance, retention, and program satisfaction ratings of yoga were high. Treatment groups did not differ on WL or psychological constructs (with exception of one mindfulness subscale) at 6 months. However, among those with high initial WL (≥5%), YOGA lost significantly more weight (-9.0kg vs. -6.7kg) at 6 months and resulted in greater distress tolerance, mindfulness, and self-compassion and lower negative affect, compared to CON. Conclusions: Study findings provide preliminary support for yoga as a potential strategy for improving long-term WL among those losing ≥5% in standard behavioral treatment.

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of yoga incorporated into a pediatric weight management program (promoting health in teens; PHIT Yoga) to racially diverse caregivers and youth and to compare this program with a cohort that received a program that did not include yoga (PHIT Kids). Methods: Thirty children with obesity were enrolled in a 12-week pediatric weight management intervention (PHIT Kids, n = 17; PHIT Yoga, n = 13). Weight, BMI z-score (BMIz), BMI percent of the 95th percentile, and health habits assessment were obtained from both cohorts pre- and post intervention. Acceptability was assessed in the yoga cohort. Results: Fifty-four percent of children in the PHIT Yoga cohort and 65% of children in the PHIT Kids cohort attended ≥75% of the intervention sessions. Survey results support that the PHIT Yoga was acceptable to both caregivers and children. Improvements in BMIz were observed in 50% of children in each cohort and both groups improved on five of seven health habits; cohorts overlapped on three habits (breakfast, screen time, and sugar-sweetened drinks). Conclusion: Findings support that yoga classes added to a pediatric weight management program are feasible and acceptable in racially diverse children with severe obesity and their caregivers.
A comprehensive yoga programme for weight reduction in children & adolescents with obesity: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background & objectives: Obesity is a rising pandemic in childhood. There is scarcity of evidence on the efficacy of yoga in achieving weight loss in overweight/obese children. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of family-based comprehensive yoga intervention in the reduction of body mass index (BMI) in overweight/obese children, in comparison to standard dietary and lifestyle counselling and control group. Methods: This was an open-label randomized controlled study. Children aged 8-15 yr who were overweight or had obesity were randomized to one of the three arms for 18 wk; standard weight management (group 1), yoga with dietary modification (group 2) and control (no intervention; group 3). Reduction in BMI and improvement in physiological, biochemical and psychological parameters from baseline to 18 wk was compared between the three arms. Late follow up was also done at 6-12 months. Results: A total of 165 children with mean±standard deviation (SD) age of 11.6±1.8 yr and mean BMI 26.3±4.2 kg/m2 were enrolled. Outcome analysis at 18 wk was performed for 109 children. Improved diet quality and reduced intake were observed in both intervention arms. The median (IQR) reduction in BMI in standard and yoga arms was similar [-1.4 (-3.1, -0.5) kg/m2 and -1.2 (-2.3, -0.6) kg/m2, respectively], while it increased by +0.3 (-0.3, 0.1) in the control arm. In the yoga arm, mean systolic BP reduced from 118 (10) to 114 (8) mmHg, (P=0.019). In the standard arm, significant improvement in psychological scores was noted. In group 3, the mean fasting glucose increased from 93±10 to 102±12 mg/dl (P<0.001). Interpretation & conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that yoga in conjunction with dietary modification is equally effective as the standard weight management for BMI reduction in the paediatric age group.

Integrated Yoga Practice in Cardiac Rehabilitation Program: A Randomized Control Trial

Abstract:Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a detrimental noncommunicable disease, which is increasing due to sedentary lifestyle and urbanization in the young population. It is further elevated with risk factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, an increase in triglycerides, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and so on, which manifests as atherosclerotic disease. Yoga-based lifestyle intervention is a noninvasive effective treatment method to control and prevent cardiac risk factors in CAD patients. Yoga has been used in India as a therapeutic method to manage hypertension and other chronic disorders and is fast gaining popularity as an effective means for the alleviation of stress, improvement of fitness, and enhancement of well-being. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of introducing the integrated approach of yoga therapy (IAYT) in a cardiac rehabilitation center in India and understand its usefulness in improving the cardiac function and managing the cardiac risk factors in acute myocardial infarction patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Methods and Design: Cardiac patients were randomized to a yoga-practicing group (n = 33) and a control group (n = 33). The yoga-practicing group was instructed to attend three supervised IAYT classes 3 days per week for 12 weeks at the hospital yoga center. The control group received standard care that included pharmacologic treatment and the instructions of the cardiologist. The outcome measures were assessed at baseline (T1 = 0) and completion (T2 = 3 months). The primary outcome measure was the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Results: There was no statistically significant difference in LVEF (U = 420.500, p value = 0.218) between the two groups. However, the yoga-practicing group showed significant reduction in depression (Cardiac Depression Scale [CDS], U = 71, p value = 0.0), anxiety (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale [HAM-A], U = 128, p value = 0.0), and a significant increase in quality of life (QOL) scores (Duke Activity Status Index [DASI], U = 146, p value = 0.0; and metabolic equivalents (METs), U = 136, p value = 0.0) at 3 months compared to control. Overall, the CAD patients practicing yoga showed a favorable profile compared to control individuals on CDS, HAM-A, DASI, and MET outcomes. Control and yoga practicing groups did not differ significantly in the lipid levels. Conclusion: This study indicated that the integration of yoga practice in a cardiac rehabilitation program is feasible and has no added benefit in improving the cardiac function. However, the addition of yoga to cardiac rehabilitation may be beneficial in reducing depression and anxiety and improving QOL in patients.

Abstract:Background and hypothesis: The efficacy of yoga as an adjunctive treatment for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) has garnered interest. While yoga may positively influence various symptom domains, further investigation is needed due to the limited number, quality, and generalizability of studies. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability (primary outcome) of a yoga-based group intervention (YoGI) developed in a participatory approach and explored its preliminary effectiveness. Study design: In addition to the primary outcomes, this preregistered randomized controlled trial examined rater-blinded general psychopathology, positive- and negative symptoms, and self-rated depression, anxiety, stress, body mindfulness, mindfulness, psychological flexibility, cognition, social functioning, quality of life, and medication regime at baseline and postintervention as secondary outcomes. Study results: Fifty inpatients with SSD received either TAU (n = 25) or YoGI + TAU (n = 25) for four weeks. Outcomes showed 95% protocol adherence of YoGI, feasibility, and retention rates of 91% and 94%, respectively, and a dropout rate of 6%. ANCOVA revealed significant between-group postintervention improvements for YoGI + TAU in positive symptoms, depression, cognitive fusion, and a mindfulness subscale. Medium-to-large pre- to postintervention effects were found for body mindfulness, positive, negative, and general psychopathology, cognitive fusion, depression, anxiety, stress, quality of life, and attention in YoGI + TAU, while within-group changes were consistently smaller in TAU. No severe adverse events were reported. Conclusions: This trial supports the feasibility and acceptability of YoGI for inpatients with SSD and provides preliminary evidence of YoGI's benefits beyond TAU. Further robust, multicentric RCTs are warranted to deepen our understanding of YoGI's therapeutic potential and inform clinical interventions for SSD.

Abstract:Yoga-based clinical research has shown considerable promise in varied ageing-related health outcomes in older adults. However, robust frameworks have yet to be used in intervention research to endorse yoga as a healthy ageing intervention to test the multidimensional construct of healthy ageing. This was an assessor-masked, randomized controlled trial conducted among 258 sedentary, community-dwelling older adults aged 60–80 years, randomly allocated to 26-week yoga-based intervention (YBI) ( n = 132) or waitlist control (WLC) ( n = 126). The effectiveness of YBI was assessed through two separate global statistical tests, generalized estimating equations and rank sum-based test, against a comprehensive healthy aging panel comprised of ten markers representing the domains of physiological and metabolic, cognitive, physical capability, psychological, and social well-being. The secondary outcomes were individual primary marker scores, Klotho, inflammatory markers, and auxiliary blood markers. We could establish the healthy aging effect of the 26-week YBI over WLC using two models of global statistical test (GEE, β = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.20 to 0.38, p < 0.001), and rank sum-based test ( β = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.19 to 0.36, p < 0.001). There were also significant improvements in direction of benefit at individual levels of all the aging markers. Exploratory evaluation with adopted indices from contemporary clinical trials also validated the potential of YBI for healthy aging; HATICE adapted composite score (mean difference = − 0.18; 95% CI = − 0.26 to − 0.09, p < 0.001) and healthy ageing index (mean difference = − 0.33; 95% CI = − 0.63 to − 0.02, p = 0.03). The global effect of YBI across multiple ageing-related outcomes provides a proof of concept for further large-scale validation. The findings hold a great translational value given the accelerated pace of population aging across the globe. Trial registration: CTRI/2021/02/031373.

Abstract:Implications of cultural accommodation-hybridization were explored within the framework of individualism-collectivism. Individualism highlights the personal and centralizes individuals as the unit of analyses, whereas collectivism highlights the social and contextualizes individuals as parts of connected social units. In 2 experiments, the ways in which individualism, collectivism, and identity salience influence social obligation to diverse others was explored. The authors varied the personal goal interrupted (achievement-pleasure), the target (individual-group), and focus (in-group-larger society) of social obligation within subjects. The authors hypothesized that collectivism would increase obligation to the in-group when identity was made salient; that individualism alone would dampen social obligation; and that cultural accommodation-hybridization (being high in both individualism and collectivism) would increase obligation to larger society.

Abstract:Background Yoga has shown promise as an add-on therapy for patients with schizophrenia. However, most studies have been short-term, with methodological limitations. Methods We conducted a six-month parallel-group randomized-controlled trial (with rater blinding) to evaluate the effectiveness of a yoga-based intervention in improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia. We recruited 110 patients from an urban tertiary hospital and a semi-urban community centre who met DSM 5 criteria for schizophrenia and were on stable medication for at least six weeks. Participants were randomly assigned to either yoga add-on therapy (YT) or treatment-as-usual (TAU) groups. Clinical assessments were conducted at baseline and at one, three and six months. The primary outcome was changes in positive/negative symptom scores and secondary outcomes included changes in quality of life, perceived stress and socio-occupational functioning. Results Intention to treat analysis with a longitudinal mixed model approach revealed a significant group-by-time interaction with the YT group showing medium effect improvements in negative symptoms (η 2 p = 0.06) and small effect improvements in positive symptoms (η 2 p = 0.012), WHOQOL-BREF quality of life [psychological well-being (η 2 p = 0.015) and environmental health (η 2 p = 0.048)] when compared to TAU. The patients successfully learned and performed yoga practices without reporting any significant adverse effects. Discussion Our findings suggest that yoga-based intervention may be a valuable adjuvant therapy for medication-stabilized patients with schizophrenia, especially in ameliorating negative symptoms and enhancing quality of life. Future controlled trials, including active physical interventions, are crucial to validate yoga's efficacy, optimize clinical use, and elucidate underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the development of a novel multiple thin‐slab projection‐reconstruction acquisition technique. To eliminate the slab boundary artifact, the slabs are highly overlapped and only a small fraction of the projection view angles are sampled at each slab position. After Fourier transformation in the slice direction, there are sufficient numbers of projection measurements at each slice position to obtain very high resolution MR angiograms. The technique presented has all of the advantages of multiple overlapping thin slab acquisition (MOTSA) with no evidence of slab boundary artifact. J. Magn. Reson. Development, validation, and feasibility testing of a yoga module for substance use disorder

Abstract:Introduction: Research evidence and theoretical models point to the need to implement yoga and mindfulness interventions as they impact different physiological and psychological functioning associated with addiction and relapse. To ensure the safe application of yoga, a standardized yoga module that can be practiced across any drug type of substance addiction is required. This study focuses on developing, validating, and testing a yoga module's feasibility for the management of substance use disorder (SUD). Materials and Methods: The yoga module was developed for SUD by including specific yogic practices derived from research evidence from Google Scholar, PubMed, and traditional literature targeting symptoms related to SUD. Yoga experts validated the module using a 3-point Likert scale. Practices which scored a content validity ratio (CVR) score ≥0.33 were retained in the yoga module for SUD. A pilot assessment was done online to test the module's feasibility. Participants in a 9-week residential rehabilitation center participated in the study. The module was taught as an add-on to their existing treatment. The motivation for seeking treatment was assessed at baseline, and quality of life was assessed at pre- and post-intervention using the questionnaire de motivation au traitement des toxicomanies and the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF (WHOQOL BREF), respectively. Results: Thirty experts validated the developed module. Based on the CVR scoring, 37 yoga practices were retained. The final list of practices included breathing exercises, sukshmāvyāyāma (loosening exercise), āsana (postures), prāṇāyāma (breathing exercise), and dhyāna (meditation). In the feasibility study, all participants ( n = 12) reported satisfaction and mentioned no adverse effects of the yoga intervention. The participants' mean ± standard deviation (SD) of identified motivation was 26.6 ± 1.9, introjected amotivation 22.7 ± 5.1, external motivation 16.4 ± 6.2, and a motivation 15.1 ± 5.7. The Global score or Internalization coefficient mean ± SD was 29.1 ± 18.1. The participant's total score on the WHOQOL-BREF was significant post intervention ( P = 0.004). With the practice of the module, there was a significant change in the participant's psychological ( P = 0.008), social ( P = 0.002), and environmental domains ( P < 0.001) but not in physical health ( P = 0.17). At 1 month follow-up, 11 participants ( n = 12) maintained abstinence. Conclusion: The designed yoga module for SUD was validated by yoga experts and was considered safe and feasible by patients with SUD. In addition, patients reported an increase in their quality of life. This can be further studied in randomized controlled trials.

Abstract:Introduction: The philosophical tenets of yoga such as Ashtanga yoga (AY) and Trigunas are seldom considered while designing yoga programs for chronic diseases. This randomized control trial explored the impact of AY principle-based yoga on the anthropometric indices, personality traits, and quality of life (QoL) in abdominal obesity (AO).Materials and Methods: Sixty-two participants with AO were randomized (n = 31 in each arm) into an AY arm or general yoga (GY) arm. For 12 weeks, both the AY and the GY received the same yoga protocol; however, the AY received an additional AY-based orientation session fortnightly. Changes in waist circumference, hip circumference (HC), height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, Vedic Personality Inventory for gunas, and World Health Organization QoL-BREF were measured at baseline and at the end of 12 weeks.Results: By the end of 12 weeks, the AY arm significantly differed from the GY arm in HC (P = 0.05) and BMI scores (P = 0.03). The AY arm has shown a significant increase in the sattva guna (P < 0.001) and reduction in the rajas (P < 0.001) and tamas gunas (P = 0.03). There was a significant improvement in the physical and social QoL domain, whereas the other variables examined remained insignificant. The increase in sattva guna was negatively correlated with waist circumference (P = -0.489) and BMI (r = -0.553).Conclusion: Exposing participants to progressive AY philosophy can change the personality traits which are further associated with melioration in the determiners of AO. Future yoga programs for chronic disorders may consider including AY philosophy for substantive outcomes.

Abstract:Empirical studies on yoga have shown that regular practice can have a beneficial effect on risk factors of cardiovascular diseases; also, it can decrease body weight, body fat and increase muscle mass. Positive effects on balance and flexibility were also reported. This study evaluated the impact of a 3-month complex yoga-based program, including physical exercises, education, and social support, with a quasi-randomized design in a middle-aged community sample. The intervention group consisted of 46 participants while the passive control group was 29 participants. The intervention group showed a significant increase in core muscle strength and hamstring flexibility and a decrease in body fat. No significant changes were found concerning risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, body weight, muscle mass, balancing ability, and dietary habits. A 3-month yoga intervention cannot substantially impact the cardiovascular system and body weight control in middle-aged adults.

Abstract:International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Background:Depression is a leading cause of disability and the conventional management has several limitations. Recent studies demonstrated the benefits of yoga in psychological disorders.Aims:To evaluate the efficacy of the Integrated Yoga Module (IYM) to standard care with added yogic education on lifestyle modification (YELM) in patients with clinical depression.Methods:A PROBE trial was conducted at a single tertiary care hospital in India. Adults aged 18 to 64 with clinical depression were randomized to either an IYM or an active control group using a computer-generated mixed block randomization sequence. Both groups received YELM in addition to standard care and the intervention group practiced IYM, for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the reduction in depression symptoms assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and secondary outcomes involved self-compassion, brief resilience, positive and negative experiences, and quality of life, evaluated at 8 weeks.Results:The mean ± SD age of participants was 32.2 ± 10.0 and 54.3% were females. The IYM group showed statistically significant improvements in BDI-II scores β = −6.7 (95% CI [−10.8, −2.5]; p = .001), resilience β = 0.4 (95% CI [0.02, 0.80]; p = .037), physical health domain of WHOQOL - BREF β = 10.1 (95% CI [0.7, 19.5]; p = .035) and negative emotions (SPANE-N) β = 2.8 (95% CI [0.1, 5.4]; p = .037). However, no significant differences were found in SCS-SF β = −0.3 (95% CI [−0.7, 0.0]; p = .053).Conclusions:IYM as an adjunct is superior to conventional medical management in reducing symptoms and improving positive psychological resources in clinical depression.

Abstract:(1) Background: With the aging population, effective interventions are needed to enhance the health of older adults. This study investigated the combined effects of yoga and the Mediterranean diet on various health outcomes in community-dwelling older adults; (2) Methods: The study employed a randomized controlled trial design with a total of 116 older adults randomized to an experimental group (n = 57) that underwent a combined yoga and Mediterranean diet program and a control group (n = 59) that did not receive any intervention. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment, flexibility with the Back Scratch Test and the Chair Sit-and-Reach Test, balance, gait, and fall risk with the Tinetti Scale, and muscle strength with a dynamometer and the 30 s Chair Stand Test; (3) Results: Regarding nutritional status, there were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group (Cohen's d = 0.02). The participants in the experimental group showed greater balance (11.12 ± 3.01 vs. 10.03 ± 2.35, Cohen's d = 0.41 and gait (7.63 ± 1.96 vs. 6.69 ± 2.50, Cohen's d = 0.44) with respect to the control group. In terms of flexibility, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in the right arm (Cohen's d = 0.43), left arm (Cohen's d = 0.64), right perineum (Cohen's d = 0.42), and left leg (Cohen's d = 0.37) Finally, in terms of strength, participants in the experimental group experienced statistically significant improvements in grip strength and lower body strength (Cohen's d = 0.39 and 0.81, respectively); (4) Conclusions: The study highlights the potential benefits of a 12-week intervention combining yoga with a Mediterranean diet to improve the health and functional capacities of community-dwelling older adults.

Evaluation of the effect of storage medium on fragment reattachment.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/AIM Fragment reattachment is a conservative and a valid alternative to a direct composite restoration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of commonly available storage media on the fracture resistance of reattached fragments. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty sound human maxillary incisors were divided into three groups, the teeth were then sectioned and the fragments were kept dry (Group A), stored in milk (Group B) and in saline (Group C) for 24 h. The fragments were then reattached using simple reattachment technique with flowable composite resin. These teeth were then subjected to thermocycling and the fracture resistance of these reattached fragments were recorded. The mode of fracture was also recorded. RESULTS Group C (saline) recorded the highest mean fracture resistance (76.9 N) followed by Group B (milk) and Group C (dry), (38.7 N and 27.2 N, respectively). Most of the samples in Group A (65%) and Group C (70%) showed adhesive fracture, whereas 50% of the samples in Group B showed adhesive fracture. CONCLUSIONS Fragments stored in saline and milk showed greater fracture resistance than those kept dried.
Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of a Standard Versus Postures-Only Yoga Session: Potential Self-Regulatory and Neurophysiological Mechanisms of an Ancient Practice

Abstract:Background: It is well-recognized that maintaining a regular yogic practice is associated with numerous physical and psychological health benefits. However, few studies have explored the possible psychological and neurophysiological mediators through which the component parts of yoga-ethics, breath regulation, postures, and meditation-work to produce salutary effects. Purpose: To address this gap, we conducted a cluster randomized trial to test the following set of theory-based mechanisms: emotion regulation for ethics, self-control for breath regulation, discomfort and distress tolerance for postures, and mindfulness for meditation. We also explored yoga's effects on the autonomic nervous system by examining salivary acetylcholinesterase levels. Methods: Participants (N = 260) were randomly assigned in clusters (n = 37) to a single, hour-long standard or postures-only yoga class. Results: Findings suggest that a single yoga class may confer both psychological and neurophysiological benefits, yet there were few differences between the two types of yoga classes. Pre- to post-session main effects of time, all in the expected direction, emerged for five of eight theoretical mediators, as well as for salivary acetylcholinesterase levels. Time X condition interactions observed for three of the mediators-cognitive reappraisal, discomfort tolerance, and expressive suppression-along with findings from the exploratory mediation analysis suggest potential unique benefits of the two yoga sessions for certain outcomes. Conclusions: Additional studies are needed to replicate these results and to test other potential mediators and/or primary outcomes through which yoga might work to promote health.
