Abstract:A dispersion-free scheme for stable multi-access radio frequency dissemination in a fibre loop link is proposed and demonstrated. The phase jitter and dispersion-induced power fading are suppressed simultaneously by transmitting different single-band signals in opposite propagating directions. Experimentally, a 2.5 GHz radio frequency signal is steadily transmitted to different remote sites, with phase deviations less than 0.6 ps over 15,000 s.

Abstract:The performances of radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with fixed incident optical power on photodetector (PD) are improved through carrier suppression method. Firstly, a precise analytical model is proposed to quantify the relationship between the improvement of link gain, noise figure (NF), spur-free dynamic range (SFDR) and the carrier suppression ratio x, in which, the modulation index m is fully considered for the first time to our knowledge. Then the optimum optical carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) for RoF link performances in both double-sideband and single-sideband modulation is obtained from the optimum x for the link performances. Finally the experiments with the carrier subtraction method realized by Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are carried out and the experimental results show good agreement with the simulation ones.

Abstract:A carrier phase-shifted (CPS) double sideband (DSB) modulation technique in radio-over-fiber (RoF) system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By tuning the biases in a single-drive dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (SD-DPMZM), the optical carrier in the DSB spectrum acquires additional phase shift. The transmittance response of a dispersive RoF link is thus being controlled and shifted in the frequency domain. Experiments successfully turned the maximum transmission frequency to 10 GHz and 15 GHz for both 25 and 39 km fiber links. Abstract:We propose a multi-order digital-analog radio-over-fiber (DA-RoF) scheme with different quantization factors at each stage and verify it experimentally in a D-band photonics-aided RoF transmission system. The 10-Gbaud multi-order DA-RoF signal with a common public radio interface equivalent data rate (CPRI-EDR) of 78.13 Gb/s/λ is successfully transmitted in a 130-GHz 4.6-km wireless link. The calculated capacity-distance product is 359.4 Gb/s/λ·km with a spectral efficiency (SE) of 7.81 bit/s/Hz. Results show that the 4-order DA-RoF scheme achieves a maximum recovered signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 38.26 dB and minimum error vector magnitude (EVM) of 1.22%, which meets the requirement of 4096-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (4096-QAM) transmission. Compared with the traditional analog-RoF (A-RoF) scheme, an average SNR enhancement of 3.8 dB for each linearly increased bandwidth is achieved in the DA-RoF scheme. Our work suggests many optimistic possibilities for the low-cost 5G wireless fronthaul and future radio access networks.

Abstract:A high-quality broadband radio frequency linear frequency modulation (RF-LFM) signal generation method based on the optical frequency quadrupling and the direct digital waveform synthesize (DDWS) with time-domain pre-distortion compensation is theoretical analyzed and experimental demonstrated. In this method, the optical frequency quadrupling is realized by beating the higher-order sidebands using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) so as to achieve the RF-LFM signal output. Since this optical frequency quadrupling link will induce the amplitude and phase distortions for the LFM signal, a time-domain pre-distortion compensation technique is used based on polynomial fitting. The experimental result shows that a LFM signal with the bandwidth 12 GHz and pulse width 10 is at the central frequency 22 GHz can be obtained. With the pre-distortion compensation the output LFM spectrum flatness is improved from 6dB to 2dB, the phase error is reduced from 30 degrees to 5 degrees, and the peak side lobe ratio (PSLR) is improved from -10.12dB to -13.01dB, which is close to the theoretical value -13.26dB.

Abstract:Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication system is a special index modulation (IM) technique with low hardware complexity and physical layer security potential. However, the deployment of the SFDM system is always complicated and time-consuming. To solve the problems, an adaptive SFDM system without phase measurement is proposed and implemented in this paper. We design a system architecture fit for self-adjustment and propose the corresponding adaptive algorithm. The state isolation and the BER performance are measured under an indoor channel, which verifies its validity.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate an optical millimeter-wave and a full-duplex radio-over-fiber system by using one optical modulator was proposed and experimentally demonstrated.A mixer was employad to generate electrical millime-ter-wave,and single-arm electronic-optical modulator to generate double sideband signals.Then an optical interleaver is employed to separate the spectrum of the double-sideband signals.The separated first-order sidband modes were used to generate optical millimeter-wave with double RF frequency,while the separated optical carrier was reused for upstream connection.The experiment results show that the 40GHz optical millimeter-wave will be generated by 20GHz RF re-source,and 2.5Gbit/s downstream and upstream data can be transmitted over 20km in fiber.

Abstract:A duplex radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with a novel scheme to generate 60-GHz millimeter (mm)-wave using 20 GHz double sideband (DSB) optical mm-wave with signal carried only by its optical carrier is investigated. In the RoF downlink, the modulation frequency to generate the DSB optical mm-wave is reduced greatly. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that this scheme cannot only eliminate the code form distortion caused by the time shifting of the sidebands, but also reduce the influence of the fading effect as the DSB optical mm-wave signal is transmitted along the fiber. Based on the scheme, the duplex RoF link with the frequency up- (down-) conversion of the down- (up-) link mm-wave signal is built and the uplink transmission performance is analyzed theoretically.

Abstract:The second-and third-order spurious free dynamic ranges (SFDRs) are two key performance indicators for a multioctave analogy photonic link (APL). The linearization methods for either second-or third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD2 or IMD3) have been intensively studied, but the simultaneous suppression for the both were merely reported. In this paper, we propose an APL with improved second-and third-order SFDRs for multioctave applications based on two parallel DPMZM-based sub-APLs. The IMD3 in each sub-APL is suppressed by properly biasing the DPMZM, and the IMD2 is suppressed by balanced detecting the two sub-APLs. The experiment demonstrates significant suppression ratios for both the IMD2 and IMD3 after linearization in the proposed link, and the measured second-and third-order SFDRs with the operating frequency from 6 to 40 GHz are above 91dB.Hz(1/2) and 116dB.Hz(2/3), respectively. Abstract:We present a fiber-based radio-frequency signal distribution system. In our system, we use a hybrid technique, in which digital signal processing is combined with analog electronic architectures to effectively reduce the fiber-induced phase noises and ensure high-accuracy frequency distributions. The technique encompasses a digital signal processing module for active phase fluctuation analysis and a resistance-capacitance microwave phase shifter for the noise suppression. Our system achieves a fractional frequency transfer stability of $3\times 10^{-14}$ at 1 s and ${\sim}8\times 10^{-17}$ at $5\times 10^{4}$ s over a 22-km outdoor fiber link. The system is easily implemented and very scalable, while suppressing the fiber-induced phase noises by over two orders of magnitude in the long-term.

Abstract:We propose a digital-cascaded-pulse-code-modulation radio-over-fiber (DCP-RoF) scheme and verify it experimentally in a coherent transmission system. The 50-Gbaud 2-order 6-bit DCP-RoF signal with a common public radio interface equivalent data rate of ${279}\;{\rm Gb/s/}\lambda$ is successfully transmitted in a 10-km standard single-mode fiber link. Results show that the 2-order 6-bit DCP-RoF scheme achieves a maximum recovered signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 83.43 dB, which meets the requirements for 16,777,216-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16,777,216-QAM) transmission. The DCP-RoF scheme has advantages over analog RoF and digital–analog RoF in terms of SNR improvement, as well as advantages over digital RoF (D-RoF) in spectral efficiency. Furthermore, an average SNR enhancement of 13.48 dB for each linearly increased bandwidth is achieved in the DCP-RoF scheme. Our work suggests many optimistic possibilities for the future radio access networks and mobile fronthaul.

Abstract:We propose a truncated digital delta-sigma modulated radio-over-fiber (TDDSM-RoF) scheme and verify it experimentally in a 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) coherent system. The 40-Gbaud TDDSM-RoF signal with a common public radio interface equivalent data rate (CPRI-EDR) of 0.214 Tb/s is successfully transmitted in the system with excellent performance. The recovered error vector magnitude (EVM) of TDDSM-RoF signal is 1.27%, meeting the EVM requirement for 4096-quadrature amplitude modulation (4096-QAM) transmission in fronthaul. Compared with the analog RoF (A-RoF) and digital-analog RoF (DA-RoF) schemes, the TDDSM-RoF scheme with a 6-times oversampling rate (6-OSR) DSM achieves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains of 15.7 and 10.2 dB, respectively, at the cost of extra bandwidth. We also demonstrate a truncated-DA-RoF (TDA-RoF) scheme with analog quantization error. Although the TDA-RoF consumes less bandwidth than TDDSM-RoF, it has limited improvement in SNR. Compared with the commercial digital RoF (D-RoF) solution, the proposed TDA-RoF has an advantage in the required bandwidth and the TDDSM-RoF achieves a higher SNR gain and higher-QAM transmission. Both of them can serve as promising solutions for future 6G fronthaul.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the joint sparse beamforming and power control for network-assisted full duplex (NAFD) in large-scale distributed antenna system (L-DAS), where the remote antenna units either be operating in half-duplex mode or full-duplex mode are all connected to the central processing unit (CPU) via high-speed backhaul links. With joint processing at CPU, NAFD could achieve truly flexible duplex, including flexible half-duplex and full-duplex. Cross-link interference and the finite-capacity backhaul are the main problems of NAFD in L-DAS. To solve these problems, we aim to maximize the aggregated rate of uplink and downlink subject to quality of service constraints and backhaul constraints. Two approaches have been proposed to solve the optimization problem, where the first approach converts the object function to the difference of two convex functions with semi-definite relax (SDR) and then an iterative SDR-block coordinate descent method is applied to solve the problem. The second method is based on sequential parametric convex approximation. Simulation results have shown that the proposed algorithms yield a higher rate gain compared to the traditional time-division duplex scheme.

Abstract:We propose a highly linear radio-over-fiber system with low intermodulation distortion (IMD) using a single-drive dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (SD-DPMZM). The optical carrier is modulated in one of the two parallel modulators, while remaining unmodulated in the other one. There exists optimal working points for SD-DPMZM that makes its two kinds of origins of third-order IMD (IMD3) have opposite phase and equal intensity, and cancel each other; hence the output IMD3 is suppressed dramatically. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a spurious-free dynamic range of up to 122.9 dB · Hz2/3, which is in agreement with the theoretical analysis. It is about 20 dB more than a conventional MZM. The error vector magnitude of the proposed scheme, for a 16-QAM 10-MSym/s signal centered at 4 GHz, is 1.94%.

Abstract:For the fronthaul between the baseband unit and the remote radio unit (RRU), radio over fiber (RoF) is promising to replace the Common Public Radio Interface in beyond fifth-generation and the sixth-generation wireless communication systems. The weight, size, and power consumption of the RRU can be greatly reduced, along with easy support for the millimeter-wave band. In this paper, a dual-band RoF link is proposed, where flexible switching between high-frequency (28 GHz) and low-frequency (3.5 GHz) RF channels is realized through polarization control. Single-sideband modulation is performed on 28 GHz signals to avoid periodic power fading during long-distance fiber transmission. By adjusting the DC bias, the third-order intermodulation distortion component in the 3.5 GHz signal is suppressed, and the spur-free dynamic range (SFDR) is improved. Experimental results show a channel isolation of above 43 dB. The link gain of the 28 GHz signal channel is flat, and the SFDR of the 3.5 GHz signal channel can reach <math display="inline"> <mrow> <mn>118.6</mn> </mrow> <mspace width="thickmathspace"></mspace> <mrow> <mrow> <mi mathvariant="normal">d</mi> <mi mathvariant="normal">B</mi> <mo> ⋅ </mo> <mi mathvariant="normal">H</mi> </mrow> </mrow> <mrow> <msup> <mrow> <mrow> <mi mathvariant="normal">z</mi> </mrow> </mrow> <mrow> <mn>4</mn> <mrow> <mo>/</mo> </mrow> <mn>5</mn> </mrow> </msup> </mrow> </math> . In the case of RF vector signal transmission, the adjacent channel power ratio of the 3.5 GHz signal channel is optimally up to 48 dB, and the error vector magnitude is 2.9%.

Abstract:We propose a digital pulse-code-modulation radio-over-fiber (DP-RoF) scheme and verify it experimentally in a 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) coherent system. The 20-Gbaud DP-RoF signal with a common public radio interface equivalent data rate (CPRI-EDR) of 112 Gb/s is successfully transmitted in the system with excellent performance. The recovered signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of wireless signal in DP-RoF scheme is 50.14 dB, which is 26.62, 20.01 and 13.28 dB higher than that of analog radio-over-fiber (A-RoF), digital-analog radio-over-fiber (DA-RoF) and digital radio-over-fiber (D-RoF), respectively. The DP-RoF scheme meets the error vector magnitude (EVM) requirement of 65536 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), while A-RoF and DA-RoF schemes cannot reach the EVM threshold of 1024 QAM. With improved SNR, the proposed DP-RoF system is a promising scheme for ultra-high-order QAM transmission in future 6G fronthaul.
