Abstract:There are a large number of macropores/tubular channels of a few centimeters and plant roots in reclaimed dump soils, which are the main reasons for the formation of soil macropores and soil preferential flow. To systematically study the morphological characteristics and variation of soil preferential flow for different reclaimed vegetations in a dump, a dye-staining experiment and physical and chemical analysis were carried out to investigate the formation mechanism and influencing factors of soil preferential flow in the vegetation restoration process. The results indicate that there were differences in the soil water breakthrough curves for different plots. The macropore effluent rate generally increased at first and then tended to stabilize. The soil steady effluent rate decreased with increasing soil depth, which reached the maximum and minimum values at the depths of 0∼5 cm (0.0193∼0.0315 mm s−1) and 50∼60 cm (0.0028∼0.0035 mm s−1), respectively. Furthermore, the radius of soil macropores under different types of reclaimed vegetation ranged from 0.03 to 4.71 mm, most of which ranged from 0.11 to 2.36 mm. The soil macroporosity of different reclaimed vegetation types ranged from 0.03 to 16.58%, which was significantly greater than 5%. The soil macroporosity determined 65% of the variation in the steady effluent rate and 42% of the variation in the saturated hydraulic conductivity. Furthermore, the dye coverage ratio decreased as the soil layer depth increased in different plots, and there were some differences in each plot. The maximum dye coverage ratio occurred in the 0∼5 cm soil layer, which reached 90.37%. The dye coverage ratio at a depth of 0∼60 cm in six plots followed the order of Robinia pseudoacacia (26.48%) > Ulmus pumila (20.12%) > mixed forest (17.32%) > farmland (15.06%) > shrub (13.97%) > weeds (10.07%). The soil preferential flow mostly occurred in the 0∼40 cm soil depth layer, which occupied more than 93% of the total soil profile (0∼60 cm). Moreover, a Pearson correlation was used to analyze the relationship between environmental factors (soil, water, and plant factors) and the dye coverage ratio. The dye coverage ratio of soil preferential flow under different reclamation vegetations was very significantly or significantly positively correlated with the gravel content, mean radius of soil macropores, soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, root weight density, and root length density, which promoted the formation and development of soil preferential flow. This study will provide a scientific basis for understanding the formation mechanism and perfecting the research system of soil preferential flow, vegetation restoration, and reconstruction in a dump; furthermore, this research offers significance guidance in the construction of green mines and the development of regional economics.

Abstract:The problems of water scarcity and ecological fragility are common in the loess gully area. To research the distribution and evolution of the overburden fissures and quantitatively analyze them have certain theoretical and engineering significance for realizing the evaluation of overburden damage degree and safe and green mining. This paper takes the 6102 working face of Chuancao Gedan Coal Mine as the engineering background. The development law and distribution characteristics of overburden fissures caused by the mining of shallow coal seams in the loess gully area were studied by the combination of physical similarity simulation, numerical similarity simulation and fractal theory. The results show that the fractal dimension change of the overburden fissures caused by the shallow mining of coal seam groups in the loess gully area can be divided into three stages during the mining process of the working face. Repeated mining causes the activation and development of overburden fissures, the fractal dimension increases significantly, and the regularity of changes weakens. The magnitude of the stress near the working face and the fluctuation times of the stress in the goaf have an influence on the change of the fractal dimension of the overburden fissures. According to the development angle and the fractal dimension of the overburden fissures, the overburden rock above the goaf is divided into the collapse fissure area, the compaction fissure area, and the vertical fissure area. Overburden fissures develop violently in the vertical fissure area, the overburden fissures in the compaction fissure area are mostly transverse fissures, and the overburden fissures in the caving fissure area are irregular.

A Coupled CFD-DEM Investigation into Suffusion of Gap-Graded Soil Considering Anisotropic Stress Conditions and Flow Directions

Abstract:Seepage-induced losses of fine particles from the matrix of coarse fraction (i.e., suffusion) and the subsequent collapse of the force transmission structure of the gap-graded soil is a severe threat to the stability of hydraulic structure such as dams. The gap-graded soil element at different locations within such geo-structure suffers different anisotropic stress conditions and flow directions. The influences of both anisotropic stress condition and flow direction on suffusion must be considered in practice, but it remains unclear. This paper presents a three-dimensional coupled CFD-DEM investigation into suffusion considering different anisotropic stress conditions and flow directions in gap-graded granular soils from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives. It is found that the fine particles in the samples with higher anisotropic stress ratios have larger initial contact anisotropy and friction mobilization, both facilitating the erosion of these participles. For the sample with high initial contact anisotropy, the soil contact fabric is approaching isotropic during suffusion due to the erosion of the fine particles even though the stress anisotropy of the sample is kept. The sample with the major principal stress direction close to the seepage flow direction is prone to be eroded during suffusion, since the seepage forces applied to the particles increase the contact number and contact forces in the flow direction, which enhances the contact anisotropy and stress anisotropy of sample and thus increases the cumulative fine particles loss. It is also found that the contact-based fabric anisotropy variable A can be used to feature the suffusion susceptibility of samples under combined effects of stress anisotropy and flow directions.
Laboratory and field characterization of preferential flow under consideration of geometric fracture features in a karst region in southwest China

Abstract:As a result of the widespread distribution of soil fractures in karst regions, preferential flow is a well-known occurrence there, and understanding how it moves is crucial for the cognition of the local hydrological process. This study used indoor column experiments in conjunction with dye tracing to simulate the widely dispersed soil fractures in the karst region, and analysed the movement of preferential flow under various fractures. On the basis of indoor test results, field experiments were designed to measure the real-time infiltration process of the preferential flow under two typical forests. Results revealed that preferential flow only occurred when the fracture was connected to the soil surface. The connectivity of fractures and their angle affected the movement of preferential flow, as well as the magnitude of wetting adjacent to the preferential flow paths. The magnitude of flow imbibition into the matrix system is ranked as follows: soil with fractures connected to the surface > soil with fractures not connected to the surface > homogeneous soil without fracture. In addition, the wetting area in the soil was larger when two adjacent fractures were inwardly inclined than when two fractures were vertical or outwardly inclined, but the degree of preferential flow development was relatively lower. The cumulative infiltration volume and steady infiltration rate of the preferential flow under the mixed forest were higher than those of the matrix flow, whereas the opposite was true for the Pinus massoniana pure forest. The cumulative infiltration volume and steady infiltration rate of both matrix flow and the preferential flow under the mixed forest were greater than those of the P. massoniana pure forest. The response of soil fracture characteristics on the preferential flow could not be ignored, and it can provide directions for the hydrological processes in the karst region.

Abstract:The soil arching effect and properties of the flow field have been recognised as key factors for controlling soil erosion behaviour at the opening of underground facilities. However, little attention has been paid to the influence of fine particles on gap-graded soil erosion at the opening. For this reason, a series of simulations that consider different fines content (Fc) and stress condition (p ' v) was performed using the coupled CFD-DEM. Soil erodibility at the opening was found to decrease when the fine particles under-fill the voids (e.g., Fc = 10% and 20%). Conversely, the fine particles start to facilitate soil erosion at the opening when over-filling the voids (e.g., Fc = 30%). The micromechanical analyses, including the evolution of the contact force chain and the coordination number, reveal that when the fine particles under-fill the voids, the increase in soil dilatancy and the supporting effect of the fine particles help stabilise the soil arch at the opening. When the fine particles start to over-fill the voids, the small number of coarse-coarse contacts and the large opening-to-particle size weakens the stability of the soil arch at the opening, increasing soil erodibility compared with Fc = 10% and 20%.

Abstract:Ground fissures are generated during the coal mining process due to overlying strata migration, which provides gas and water seepage channels and usually contributes to coal mining accidents in shallow buried coal seams with larger mining height working faces. Thus, the evolution features of ground fissures in large mining height working faces and shallow buried coal seams were explored by considering field observation data, similar simulation, and numerical simulations. The results show that the weathered rock layer above the thin bedrock inhibits fracture growth caused by coal mining. Overlying strata fracture expansion can be quantitatively divided into three stages based on fractal dimension: the overburden fracture formation stage, the overburden deformation fracture expansion stage, and the overburden fracture stable development stage. The movement deformation region of the ground fissure can be described by three characteristic zones: the boundary tension zone, the central compression zone, and the central dynamic tension and compression zone. Central dynamic fissures usually have 3–5 fissure counts with 2–5 m intervals between each group of fissures; central fissures develop twice from open to closed widths; the time period for two central fissures to reach their with maximum widths is 11–20 days; and border fissures expand rapidly with maximum values in a time period of 5–6 days.

Research on Seepage Properties and Pore Structure of the Roof and Floor Strata in Confined Water-Rich Coal Seams: Taking the Xiaojihan Coal Mine as an Example

Abstract:During the construction and exploitation process in the Xiaojihan coal mine, which is located in Yulin of northern Shaanxi, we find a special hydrogeological phenomenon that coal seam is acted as a confined fractured aquifer. The water-rich coal seam has natural fissures which are confined with water storage. However, the water comes from the static and original reserves in coal seams, which have a weak link to other aquifers in the roof and floor strata. It indicates that the roof and floor strata provide a natural waterproof barrier for the fissure water in the coal seam, resulting in a relatively closed storage space of confined water. In order to further investigate the critical function that mechanical properties of permeability play in the confined fractured aquifer, the rock complete stress-strain permeability test and pore development structure test are carried out with rock samples of the roof and floor strata in this field. Results are as follows: (1) coal seams of Xiaojihan coal mine are confined fractured aquifers, the fissure confined water in coal seams has a strong relationship with total stress-strain permeability and development characteristics of the pore structure of the roof and floor strata. (2) The permeability of the roof and floor strata is extremely low, when the strata is less than 30 meters away from the coal seam with the magnitude order remaining less than 10 −12 m/s. If they are closer to the coal seam, the watertightness and plasticity of the strata will be stronger, and the antidestructive capability of the strata during the distortion process will be also increased, resulting in the larger strain for the formation of macroscopic water-conducting fissures. The roof and floor strata effectively cut off the hydraulic connection between the fissure water in the coal seam and other aquifers, which ensure the coal seam acts as water storage space of confined fractured aquifers. (3) For undeveloped fissures, the effective porosity is less than 2% of the roof and floor strata which are less than 30 meters away from the coal seam, and particularly, this index is less than 1% of the strata within 20 meters away from the coal seam, indicating that the strata have good water resistance. When the distance between the roof strata and the coal seam is greater than 40 meters, the effective porosity has a large fluctuation, and the effective porosity of the partial strata is greater than 10%, reflecting that the rock strata fissure has been well developed. It should be attached great importance to prevent water-conducting fissures from getting hydraulic connection with the fractured water-rich coal seams and other aquifers of the roof and floor, so as to reduce the risk of mining water hazards.

Investigation of Preferential Flow and Leakage Location in Landfill: A Field Tracer Test and Numerical Analysis

Abstract:A field tracer test was carried out in an uncontrolled valley-type landfill. Fluorobenzoic acid (FBA) was firstly used in the landfill to study the preferential flow. A two-dimensional advection-diffusion dual-porosity model coupled with indirect streamline and terrain conditions was developed to analyze the breakthrough curves. The leakage location method was proposed based on the volume proportion of fracture domain in the total domain wf distribution. The results show that FBA is an excellent tracer due to its lower dosage, high peak concentration and long residence time at monitoring wells. The tracer transport depth and length can reach up to 15 m and 86.3 m, respectively. Diffusion drive the tracer flow to upstream with high velocity. The anisotropy value is mainly influenced by the effect of compression rather than the waste age. The horizontal preferential flows dominate in the landfill. The preferential flow is observed to be more obvious with the increasement of the depth due to the increasement of the content of 2D particles. The leakage probability of different part in the landfill is determined by the proposed dual-porosity model and leakage location method. The proposed leakage detection method can be used for active landfills, especially those with thick layers of wastes. It can also provide scientific guidance for the design of subsequent vertical barrier for the landfills.

Abstract:The development of ground fissures in the subsidence area induced by shallow-buried extra-thick coal seam mining leads to a decrease in soil water-holding capacity and vegetation withering. The investigation of the spatial distribution characteristics of soil pore structure in mining-induced subsidence areas and the elucidation of the response mechanism between soil physical parameters and soil structure are essential prerequisites for achieving effective ecological environment protection and restoration in mining areas. In this study, three-dimensional visualization reconstruction of soil porosity, pore diameter, roundness rate and pore connectivity at different profile depths in subsidence area caused by ultra-thick coal seam mining was conducted by using the soil CT scanning technology. Additionally, a correlation analysis model was established between physical parameters such as soil moisture content, bulk density, and pore structure parameters. The results indicate that: (1) Compared to the non-subsidence area, the number, size, and proportion of soil pores significantly increase in the tension zone, compression zone, and neutral zone, and the pore network and connectivity are extensively interconnected, and the fissure development in the tension zone is most significant, and the soil pores in the subsidence compression zone are concentrated on one side due to the influence of soil deformation. (2) As the depth of the soil profile increases, the level of soil pore development significantly decreases. The large profile depth (40–100 cm) causes a significant decrease in pore development. (3) There is a significant correlation between soil pore structure parameters and soil physical parameters (P ≤ 0.05), a highly significant correlation between soil pore structure parameters and soil moisture content (P ≤ 0.01), and a highly significant correlation between soil texture and soil moisture content (P ≤ 0.01). This research is of great significance for guiding underground production layout and repairing damaged soil.

Abstract:Soil cracks significantly affect preferential flow, and various uncertainties are associated with the effect of soil cracks on preferential flow in karst areas in Southwest China. This study investigated soil crack properties (inclusions, width, and configuration) by applying ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) to pedons. Blue dye‐tracing experiments were designed based on the geophysical detection results to assess the influences of crack inclusions (sand grains and rock fragments), crack widths (1, 1.5, and 2 cm), and configurations (I‐shape, V‐shape, and Λ‐shape) on preferential flow. The following results were obtained: (1) the GPR envelope can describe the configuration of isolated soil cracks; (2) soil cracks can accelerate infiltration and increase the maximum dye‐penetration depth, cumulative infiltration, and wetting‐front depth by averages of at least 5.2%, 63.2% and 4.4%, respectively; and (3) the I‐ and Λ‐shaped soil crack configurations contributed to preferential flow, but preferential flow was not observed along the V‐shaped‐configuration‐crack pore paths despite the retardation of Brilliant Blue FCF. The I‐shaped configurations, with a crack width of 1.5 cm, were filled with rock fragments and had higher preferential flow ratios (18.2%–52.3%) and length indices (4.0%–33.8%) compared than the other configurations. Abstract:Studying the evolution law of overlying rock fissures and predicting the development height of water-conducting fissure zones is the key to preventing roof water damage, protecting mine water resources, and realizing the safe and sustainable development of the mine. To study the overburden fracture evolution law of coal mining under aquifer conditions, the 1402 working face of Longwangzhuang Mine in Shaanmian Coalfield serves as the engineering background based on the Fractal Theory and similar simulation technology; this paper analyzes the fracture evolution of overburden rock and the development law of Water-Conducting Fracture Zone (WCFZ) during the advancing of working face, and further puts forward a model for the location discrimination of overburden fracture based on plate theory. The results indicate that post-mining, overburden rock failure assumes a trapezoidal shape, and fractures around the cutting hole and the side of the working face fully develop, while those in the middle of the goaf tend to compact. The distribution of the fracture network of mining strata at different advancing distances has good self-similarity, and the fractal dimension of the fracture network of overlying rock can be divided into three stages: ascending dimension, decreasing dimension, and stable phase. The II 1 coal seam fracture does not spread to the Sandstone Fissure Confined Aquifer. These findings provide strategic guidance for protecting mine aquifer water resources, preventing and controlling roof water inrush, and ensuring safe and sustainable production within the study area.

Abstract:Soil cracks significantly affect preferential flow; however, there are some uncertainties associated with the effect of soil cracks on preferential flow in karst areas in southwest China. Abstract:In Fenwei Basin, most of the tectonic ground fissures show characteristics of growth faults on the section. They continue to destroy the engineering properties of soil at different depths. This has introduced significant security risks to the construction processes of deep underground spaces. However, there are few studies have been conducted on syn-depositional ground fissures. Therefore, in this study, a physical simulation test was used to study the fracture propagation of syn-depositional ground fissures. The characteristics of sections and surface fractures were analyzed. The engineering properties of model soil were divided into bad and poor areas. The syn-depositional ground fissure fracture propagation process was divided into five phases. The results show that soil profile exhibited a composite Y-shaped fracture morphology. Syn-deposition affects the fracture angle and healing state of fractures. The soil strain and surface displacement were positively correlated with the number of deposition layers. The conclusions of this study provide a theoretical geological basis and practical engineering significance for design of deep underground space structures.

Abstract:Underground coal mining inevitably causes ground fissures, especially permanent cracks that cannot be closed at the boundary of the working face. Studying the underground three-dimensional morphology of the permanent cracks allows one to accurately constrain the formation and development of the ground fissures. This information will contribute to reducing mine disasters and is also a prerequisites to avoid environmental pollution. We selected the Zhangjiamao coal mine (China), which is situated in a collapsible loess area, as a case study for deciphering the formation of permanent cracks. After injecting gypsum slurry into the mine, a three-dimensional model of the ground fissures is obtained by three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner technology that records the 3D underground morphology. Integrating the geological context of a collapsible loess area, the characteristics and main processes of the ground fissure development are constrained: (1) The width of the ground fissure decreases to 0 with increasing depth and is strongly affected by the soil composition. (2) Along the vertical extension direction, the ground fissures are generally inclined to the inner-side of the working face, but the direction remains uncertain at different depths. (3) The transverse propagation direction of the ground fissure becomes more complex with increasing depth. (4) Under the influence of soil texture and water, loose soil fills the bottom of the ground fissure, thus affecting the underground 3D morphology.

Abstract:During 1958 through 1968, 91 cases of breast carcinoma in women below 30 years of age were reported to the Swedish Cancer Registry. A histologic re‐examination showed that 16 of these women had only benign proliferative conditions. Among the remaining 75 patients, two had noninvasive carcinoma, eight advanced carcinoma, and 65 operable invasive carcinoma. The carcinomas were characterized by little fibrous stroma and little or no elastosis. The survival rate of the patients with invasive breast carcinomas was similar to that in a total geographic material of all ages with breast carcinoma. The carcinoma was treated during pregnancy or within 1 year after delivery in 15 patients, with the same survival rate as for those whose carcinoma was not complicated by pregnancy. Study on the Ground Fissure Development Law of Coal Mining Based on UAV Photogrammetry and the Particle Flow Theory

Abstract:Ground fissures caused by underground coal seam mining easily result in secondary geological disasters and destroy the ecological environment, which seriously impacts the production and life of mining areas and residents. The traditional monitoring methods, such as manual measurement and satellite monitoring, have their disadvantages. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a large-scale monitoring technology for ground fissures and study its development law. In this article, we analyzed the distribution characteristics of ground fissures based on the low-altitude UAV remote sensing images and combined them with field investigation as validation. Moreover, we introduced the particle flow theory to study the development law and formation mechanism of ground fissures. This article takes the 8092 working face of a mine in Ordos City as the study area. The results showed that the accuracy rate of ground fissures based on the visual interpretation of UAV images was 95%. The ground fissures were mainly distributed near the stopping line and the groove of the working face. The plane forms of ground fissures were mainly two types: the linear type and arc type, and the location relationship can be divided into the parallel type and bifurcation type. The types of ground fissures were the tensile type and step type. Whether the upper and lower parts of the key strata were broken simultaneously is the root cause of tensile ground fissures and step ground fissures. The stability of the overlying strata had a significant influence on the change of abutment pressure above the goaf. The process of surface movement and deformation can be divided into three stages: tensile failure of the slope bottom, traction failure of the slope body, and sliding failure of the slope top. In addition, the zero point of the surface horizontal movement value and the maximum surface subsidence were not in the center of the goaf. Due to the horizontal slip of the downhill direction in the horizontal movement on the surface, the value of the downhill direction subsidence was zero. However, the value of the horizontal movement was not zero, and there was even a large horizontal movement. In conclusion, the research results can provide a useful reference for the rapid monitoring of large-scale geological disasters caused by underground coal seam mining and the application of the particle flow theory.

Abstract:Coal seam contains a large number of fractures, whose shape and structure of fissures are complicated, and they are the main channels for gas migration. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of the internal relationship between the microstructure and the macroscopic permeability is the key issue to increase the drainage volume. Some investigators discussed the permeability of coal seams based on the fractal theory, but the mechanisms of gas migration under the influence of fissure microstructures and coal deformation are still unclear. Moreover, most of the multi-process coupling analysis in the stage of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) mining was not taken into account. In this paper, the effects of fissure structures on the coal gas drainage rate in multi-field coupling are studied. Aiming at the mechanisms of gas drainage under the joint action of fracture structure, in-situ stress and adsorption deformation, we propose a two-scale multi-field coupling model, which takes into account the influences of micro fracture and pore structure. On this basis, we obtained the pressure evolution rule of coal seam pore system and fissure system and the distribution rule of coal seam displacement with drilling positions. Meanwhile, the effects of coal seam maximum fracture length, maximum pore diameter, the fractal dimension for fractures and fractal dimension for pores on coal seam extraction are discussed.

Abstract:In numerous subterranean projects, the impact of groundwater on the safety of the engineering undertaking is of paramount significance. Fractures, functioning as the primary channels for seepage within subterranean rock masses, necessitate the complex and challenging task of accurately characterizing seepage patterns and quantitatively investigating the effect of fissure parameters on fluid dynamics within the rock masses. This article presents a stochastic fissure model incorporated within a finite element framework, which captures the probabilistic distribution of fissures found in nature. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of pore water pressure and Darcy velocity fields. It unveils the permeation patterns of fissured rock masses and establishes a series of fissure models, quantitatively investigating the correlations between matrix permeability, water pressure, fissure density, fissure length, the length power law, fissure angle, the dispersion coefficient, fissure aperture, and the aperture power law, as well as their influence on the equivalent permeability of the rock mass. The findings reveal that in a discrete fissured rock mass, the greater the matrix permeability, the higher the equivalent permeability, and vice versa. Under water pressures of less than 10 MPa, gravity significantly impacts equivalent permeability, and permeability linearly increases with a rise in fissure density. Longer fractures result in higher permeability, and fractures parallel to the direction of water pressure contribute most significantly to the speed of seepage. Moreover, permeability markedly increases with an increase in aperture. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of matrix permeability and fissure parameters on equivalent permeability and calculates the permeability of each model. We also propose a set of predictive formulas based on fissure geometric parameters to anticipate the permeability of rock masses.

Abstract:The Jurassic coalfield in northern Shaanxi, China is one of the seven largest coalfields in the world. It is located in an arid region of northwestern China, with poor water resources and fragile ecological environment. Due to coal mining, the rock layers on the coal seam will be slumped and fractured to produce fissures. The penetrated fissures will cause a mine water burst disaster and cause damage to groundwater and surface water. The strip filling method can control the expansion of the diversion fissure zone and protect the groundwater and surface water from the underground mining of coal. In this paper, the effects of different strip filling conditions on the diversion fissure zone are studied by discrete element numerical experiments. The study indicates that the upward-fissure and the downward-fissure penetrations are the direct causes of the instability of the water-blocking rock group. After the upward fissure extends to a certain extent, there will be a downward fissure. Under the condition of controlling the width of the filling strip and the compressive strength, the strip filling method can effectively prevent the upward and downward fissures of the water-blocking rock group from penetrating and can ensure that the surface water system is not affected by the underground coal mining activities.

Abstract:The Jurassic‒Cretaceous coal seams in northern China are rich in fusains, and the pore size of the residual plant tissue in fusains is much larger than the limit value of seepage pores and even larger than that of some microfractures in coal. Therefore, understanding the 3D pore structure and permeability of fusains is helpful for determining the physical characteristics of inertinite-rich coal reservoirs . The porosity of the fusain varies widely, the pore structure has obvious directivity, and this study summarizes three pore types. Based on the visual distribution module of fluid migration, three types of seepage models of fusains were established, including the tubular cell structure seepage model, the broken cell wall pore seepage model, and the complete cell structure surface barrier seepage model. The results of the physical simulation verify the rationality of the three seepage models and show that the degree of fusification and cell pore fragmentation strongly affect the permeability of the fusain. For a low-rank coal reservoir with a rich fusain, the overall pore permeability is high, which is conducive to the seepage production of coalbed methane and is an important reference value for high-permeability layer selection.
