Abstract:Recently, considerable attention has k e n paid to the effecu of new-retonant (i.e. close to subharmonic resonance) perturbations on the dynamics of nonlinear systems near bifurcation points. This interest is morivated by the fact that under such conditions the essential dynamics of the system is confined to a low-dimensional manifold. This has allowed to Wiesenfeld and coworkers to predict theoretically in Refs.l.2 a variety of nonlinear paramemc effects for nonautonomous systems near a period doubling bifurcation. Experimentally, most of these effects have k e n observed in a number of non-optical nonlinear systems. Here we report the resulis uf experilrmtal iwcstigations of parametric effects near period doubling bifurcation in a loss-driven C O 2 laser which is subjected to near-resonant periodical loss perturbations. The experimental set-up is described in details in Ref. 3. The investigations were perfonwxl with a cw single mode frequency-stabilized CQ laser with two acousto-optic modulators placed inside the cavity for driving and perturbation loss modulations. The frequency of the perturbation signal was equal fd2+6, where t =IO0 kHz was the driving frequency and 6 was the detuning which was changed from 0.5 kHz up to 5 kHz. We have investigated the foUowing effects predicted in Refs.l.2: (i) The suppression of period doubling and the shifi of the bifurcation point wth increasing of the perturbation amplitude (ii) the influence of the deNning on the period doubling suppression and the shift of the bifurcation point, (iii) the emergence of evenly spaced set of peaks in the spectrum of the laser response as the bifurcation point is approached, (iv) a paramemc amplification at the perturbation frcquency as a function of the perturbation amplitude as well as the discontinuity in the laser response at a critical perturbation amplitude, (v) the reaching of maximum gain between the original (unperturbed system) and the shifmi bifurcation points, (vi) a scaling law relating the idler-to-signal amplitude ratio and the bifurcation parameter. When the system is far from the fmt threshold of period doubling we have also found that there is a range of perturbation phase values, for which by increasing perturbation amplitude up to a critical value the system follows a period doubling route to chaos. At a critical value of the pertutbation, there is a symmetry-breaking bifurcation accompanied by disappearance of the primary perioddoubling bifurcation. Besides, we have performed computer simulations of the majority of the above-mentioned nonlinear paramemc effects using a simple two-level rate-equation model in the usual plane-wave approximation. These results are in a good agreement with experimental ones.
