Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.
Ultrafine Nanoparticle-Supported Ru Nanoclusters with Ultrahigh Catalytic Activity.

Abstract:The design of an ideal heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reaction is to impart the catalyst with synergetic surface sites active cooperatively toward different reaction species. Herein a new strategy is presented for the creation of such a catalyst with dual active sites by decorating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoclusters at atomic level. This strategy is exemplified by the design and synthesis of Ru nanoclusters supported on Ni/NiO nanoparticles. This Ru-nanocluster/Ni/NiO-nanoparticle catalyst is shown to exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activity for benzene hydrogenation reaction, which is 55 times higher than Ru-Ni alloy or Ru on Ni catalysts. The nanoclusters-on-nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, Cs-corrected high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping, high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, and X-ray absorption spectra. The atomic-scale nanocluster-nanoparticle structural characteristics constitute the basis for creating the catalytic synergy of the surface sites, where Ru provides hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, Ni acts as a "bridge" for transferring H species to benzene adsorbed and activated at NiO site, which has significant implications to multifunctional nanocatalysts design for wide ranges of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pt-based nanodendrites are of particular interest in various catalytic applications due to their high surface areas and low densities. Herein, we provide a facile method for one-pot synthesis of PtRu nanodendrites via the co-reduction of Pt and Ru precursors in oleylamine by H2. The as-fabricated PtRu nanodendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability compared with PtRu nanocrystals (NCs), synthesized under the same reaction conditions, and the commercial Pt/C catalyst towards the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Abstract:We report a facile one-pot solvothermal synthesis of monodisperse iridium (Ir) ultrasmall (1.5–2.5 nm in diameter) nanoparticles (NPs), worm-like chain nanowires (NWs), and porous nanodendrites (NDs), for which CO oxidation reaction has been employed as a probe reaction to investigate the effects of nanoparticle size and surface-capping organics on the catalytic activities. Time-dependent experiments revealed that an oriented attachment mechanism induced by the strong adsorption of halide anions (Br− and I−) on specific facet of Ir nanoclusters or by decreasing the reduction rate of Ir precursors with changing their concentrations during the synthesis was responsible for the formation of Ir NWs and NDs. Annealing tests indicated that an O2-H2 atmosphere treatment turned out to be an effective measure to clean up the surface-capping organics of Ir NPs supported on commercial SiO2. Catalytic CO oxidation reaction illustrated that a significant improvement in the catalytic activity of CO oxidation reaction was achieved together with the changing of activation energies after such atmosphere treatment for the supported catalysts of the ultrasmall Ir NPs. It is noteworthy that this enhancement in catalytic activity could be ascribed to the changes in the surface status (including populations of Ir species in metallic and oxidized states, removal of surface capping organics, the variety of active sites, and total effective active site number) for the supported nanocatalysts during the atmosphere treatment.

Abstract:The antiarrhythmic agent quinidine blocks the human cardiac hKv1.5 channel expressed in mammalian cells at therapeutically relevant concentrations (EC50, 6.2 mumol/L). Mechanistic analysis has suggested that quinidine acts as a cationic open-channel blocker at a site in the internal mouth of the ionic pore and that binding is stabilized by hydrophobic interactions. We tested these hypotheses using site-directed mutagenesis of residues proposed to line the internal mouth of the channel or of nearby residues. Amino acid substitutions in the midsection of S6 (T505I, T505V, T505S, and V512A) reduced the dissociation rate for quinidine, increased the affinity (0.7, 1.5, 3.4, and 1.4 mumol/L, respectively), and preserved both the voltage-dependent open channel-block mechanism and the electrical binding distance (0.19 to 0.22). In contrast, smaller or nonsignificant effects were observed for: deletion of the intracellular C-terminal domain, charge neutralizations in the region immediately C-terminal to S6, elimination of aromatic residues in S6, and mutations at the putative internal turn of the P loop, at the external entrance of the pore, and at sites in the S4S5 linker. The approximately 10-fold increase in affinity with T505I and the reduction of the dissociation rate constant with the mutations that increased affinity are consistent with a hydrophobic stabilization of binding. Moreover, the T505 and V512 residues align on the same side of the putative alpha-helical S6 segment. Taken together, these results localize the hydrophobic binding site for this antiarrhythmic drug in the internal mouth of this human K+ channel and provide molecular support for the open channel-block model and the role of S6 in contributing to the inner pore.

Abstract:Multiwalled boron nitride nanotube (BNNT), as a catalyst support, has become one of the promising materials due to its high oxidation resistance and thermal stability. In this work, ruthenium (Ru) supported on BNNT catalysts with different metal loading and treatment conditions was investigated for the CO oxidation as a model reaction. To understand the physicochemical properties of prepared samples, a suite of techniques, including FTIT, UV-Raman, SEM, TEM, and XPS, was utilized. The results showed that the RuOx species were located on both the interior and exterior surfaces of BNNT, and an increase in metal loading led to increased active sites. The 1 wt% RuOx/BNNT (oxidized) exhibited better catalytic activity than the 1 wt% Ru/BNNT (reduced), indicating that treatment conditions significantly affect the catalytic properties. The external mass transfer limitation and reaction mechanism on the CO oxidation of 1 wt% RuOx/BNNT catalyst were investigated by varying gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) conditions and CO to O2 ratio. The peculiar tubular morphology of BNNT resulted in negligible external mass transfer limitation, and the catalyst might primarily follow the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism over the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism.

Abstract:Developing Ru-based catalysts with strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) is a significant approach to achieve highly-efficient catalytic activity and satisfactory stability. Nevertheless, the current strategies to construct SMSI are generally time-consuming and tedious, and then leading to aggregation. In this research, ultrafast microwave (45 s) is employed to affix small Ru-M (Fe, Co, Ni) nanoparticles onto nitrogen-doped two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanosheets (NCN, Ru-M/NCN), leading to robust metal-support interactions that enhance reaction kinetics and boost stability. Furthermore, the electronic interplay between Ru and M is pivotal in augmenting catalytic efficacy. The small size of the Ru-M nanoparticles and high specific surface area also favor exposing active sites and abundant interconnected channels to accelerate mass transport. Subsequent low-temperature oxidation process, to prepare RuM@RuO x /NCN, which is conducted to achieve oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Thus, the as-synthesized RuCo/NCN only requires 65 mV, 58 mV, and 98 mV to achieve 10 mA cm -2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M KOH and alkaline seawater. RuM@RuO x /NCN is obtained by low-temperature oxidation to achieve excellent oxygen reduction reaction performance in 1 M KOH, the low overpotential of only 273 mV, 256 mV and 284 mV can reach 10 mA cm -2 and satisfactory stability. Moreover, the prepared electrocatalysts also achieve satisfactory electrocatalytic activity for overall water-splitting in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes. This work provides a superior pathway for multifunctional nanomaterials for sustainable energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Carbon‐loaded amorphous 1.5‐nm‐thick Pt53Ru47 nanowires (NWs) are synthesized through a local oxidation induced amorphization process to serve as an excellent electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). The products are featured with a series of structural merits, including disordered oxide/metal atomic heterojunctions, amplified accessible catalytic sites, hydrogen‐selected permeability, and CO‐shielded internal sites, and thus display a super‐high activity and outstanding CO‐tolerance. Low‐dimensional amorphous metallic nanomaterials provide great possibility for creating high‐performance electrocatalysts owing to their conspicuous reacting merits derived from the flexible coordination structures, but remain extremely challenging in synthesis. Herein, this work reports a facile synthesis of carbon‐loaded amorphous 1.5‐nm‐thick Pt–Ru nanowires (NWs) through a local oxidation induced amorphization process. During annealing premade crystalline Pt–Ru NWs/C in air, a local‐oxidation of the oxyphilic Ru generates abundant random Ru–O bonds and disturbs the order bimetallic lattices. The as‐prepared amorphous Pt53Ru47 (a‐Pt53Ru47) NWs/C exhibits an extremely high activity (13.7 A mg−1 at 25 mV overpotential) and an excellent CO‐tolerance for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysis, drastically outperforming the crystalline counterpart and commercial benchmarks. Mechanism studies indicate the Pt–Ru bimetallic effects as well as the rich disordered "Pt–Ru–O" and/or "Pt–O–Ru" atomic heterojunctions can weaken the *H binding energy and inversely strengthen the *OH adsorption, thus promoting the alkaline HOR kinetics. More uniquely, the small interatomic spaces derived from the disordered bond nets present a H2/*H‐selected permeability, which spatially obstruct the relatively larger CO molecules to poison the internal catalytic sites during HOR. The CO‐shielded internal catalytic sites and the enriched surface *OH jointly upgrade the CO‐tolerance of the a‐Pt53Ru47 NWs/C catalysts.

Morphology-Engineered Highly Active and Stable Ru/TiO2 Catalysts for Selective CO Methanation.

Abstract:Ru/TiO2 catalysts exhibit an exceptionally high activity in the selective methanation of CO in CO2- and H-2-rich reformates, but suffer from continuous deactivation during reaction. This limitation can be overcome through the fabrication of highly active and non-deactivating Ru/TiO2 catalysts by engineering the morphology of the TiO2 support. Using anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with mainly {001}, {100}, or {101} facets exposed, we show that after an initial activation period Ru/TiO2-{100} and Ru/TiO2-{101} are very stable, while Ru/TiO2-{001} deactivates continuously. Employing different operando/in situ spectroscopies and ex situ characterizations, we show that differences in the catalytic stability are related to differences in the metal-support interactions (MSIs). The stronger MSIs on the defect-rich TiO2-{100} and TiO2-{101} supports stabilize flat Ru nanoparticles, while on TiO2-{001} hemispherical particles develop. The former MSIs also lead to electronic modifications of Ru surface atoms, reflected by the stronger bonding of adsorbed CO on those catalysts than on Ru/TiO2-{001}.
Core-shell Structured Ru-Ni@SiO2: Active for Partial Oxidation of Methane with Tunable H2/CO Ratio

Abstract:This study demonstrated that a Ru-Ni bimetallic core-shell catalyst(0.6%Ru-Ni)@Si O 2 with a proper surface Ru concentration is superior in achieving better catalytic activity and tunable H 2 /CO ratio at a comparatively lower reaction temperature(700°C).Compared to the impregnation method,the hydrothermal approach leads to a highly uniform Ru distribution throughout the core particles.Uniform Ru distribution would result in a proper surface Ru concentration as well as more direct Ru-Ni interaction,accounting for better catalyst performance.Enriched surface Ru species hinders surface carbon deposition,but also declines overall activity and H 2 /CO ratio,meanwhile likely enhances Ni oxidation to certain degree under the applied reaction conditions.Over the current(m%Ru-Ni)@Si O 2 catalyst,the formation of fibrous carbon species is suppressed,which accounts for good stability of catalyst within a TOS of 10 h.
Charge redistribution of Ru nanoclusters on Co3O4 porous nanowire via the oxygen regulation for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Ru-based catalysts are widely studied for hydrogen evolution reaction. However, there is still a lack of research on which chemical environment is more favorable for the catalytic performance of Ru. In this work, Ru nanoclusters are loaded on porous Co3O4 nanowires (Ru/Co3O4 NWs), spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope and extended X-ray absorption fine structure confirm the coordination environment of Ru with oxygen bond. Compare to Co nanowires, Ru/Co3O4 NWs have the better HER performance in alkaline medium (an overpotential of 30.96 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, electrochemical areas of 4.31 mF cm−2). Theoretical calculation also demonstrates the charge redistribution of Ru through the O binding, which has a smaller |ΔGH*| value. Besides, Ru clusters are loaded on Co foam and further oxygen doped to achieve efficient and stable HER activity. This work put a deep insight into the role of oxygen regulation of Ru-based HER catalysts.

CeO2 nanorods supported CuOx-RuOx bimetallic catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts often outperform monometallic catalysts due to changeable structural orientation, synergistic effects, and integration of two different metal or metal oxide properties. Here, a series of CeO2 nanorods (NR) supported bimetallic CuOx and RuOx catalysts (Cu: Ru ratios of 9:1, 7:3, and 5:5) were prepared using a wet impregnation method. In situ DRIFTS, H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO temperature programmed desorption (CO-TPD), and other characterization techniques were used to investigate the effect of the Cu:Ru ratio on the activity of low-temperature CO oxidation. Among three catalysts, CeO2 NR supported 7 wt% Cu-3 wt% Ru catalyst after a reduction activation treatment showed the best performance with 100 % CO conversion at 166 °C and the lowest activation energy of 18.37 kJ mol-1. Raman and XPS profiles revealed that the origin of the superior performance is at least partially related to the high surface oxygen vacancy concentration and other distinct oxygen species (physi-/chemi-sorbed oxygen and bulk lattice oxygen), leading to outstanding adsorption and oxidation property of CO.

Abstract:A facile and low-cost method has been developed to successfully fabricate 3D flower-like and sphere-like Ni2 GeO4 nanostructures with tunable sizes and shapes. It is found that the hard template, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanopsheres, is essential to the formation of the final products. The as-prepared nanostructures can serve as an outstanding support for Pt nanoparticles after surface modification with L-lysine. In the catalytic test of CO oxidation, Pt-Ni2 GeO4 nanoflowers exhibited much higher catalytic performance compared with Pt-Ni2 GeO4 nanospheres, representing a typical size-dependent catalytic property.
Ruthenium Single Atomic Sites Surrounding the Support Pit with Exceptional Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Single-metal atomic sites and vacancies can accelerate the transfer of photogenerated electrons and enhance photocatalytic performance in photocatalysis. In this study, a series of nickel hydroxide nanoboards (Ni(OH)x NBs) with different loadings of single-atomic Ru sites (w-SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x) were synthesized via a photoreduction strategy. In such catalysts, single-atomic Ru sites are anchored to the vacancies surrounding the pits. Notably, the SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x with 0.60 wt.% Ru loading (0.60-SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x) exhibits the highest catalytic performance (27.6 mmol g-1h-1) during the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR). Either superfluous (0.64 wt.%, 18.9 mmol g-1h-1; 3.35 wt.%, 9.4 mmol g-1h-1) or scarce (0.06 wt.%, 15.8 mmol g-1h-1; 0.29 wt.%, 21.95 mmol g-1h-1; 0.58 wt.%, 23.4 mmol g-1h-1) of Ru sites have negative effect on its catalytic properties. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experimental results revealed that CO2 can be adsorbed in the pits; single-atomic Ru sites can help with the conversion of as-adsorbed CO2 and lower the energy of *COOH formation accelerating the reaction; the excessive single-atomic Ru sites occupy vacancies that retard the completion of CO2RR.

Abstract:Small size ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles have shown remarkable potential for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, the complicated preparation and relatively low activity of small size Ru nanoparticles are two key challenges. In this work, carbon nanotubes supported Ru nanoparticles catalysts ( t o C) with different sizes were prepared via using the combination of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-dopa) self-polymerization oxidation reaction and different high temperature annealing to study the variation of particle activity with size. Electrochemical test results showed that the optimized 700 o C catalyst exhibited a very low overpotential at 10 mA/cm 2 (21 mV) and tafel slope of 34.93 mV/dec when the mass loading of precious metal per unit area was merely 12.11 μg/cm 2 that surpassed most recently reported high-performance Ru based catalyst. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that small Ru nanoparticles had abundant active sites, and the H 2 O dissociation on small Ru nanoparticles (110) surface is quite easy than other surfaces, while (111) surface of small Ru nanoparticles is beneficial for Tafel step of HER. The synergy between (110) and (111) surfaces on the Ru cluster contributes to its outstanding HER performance. This study provides a novel design idea in promoting the preparation method and uncovering the reason of high activity of small size Ru nanoparticles.

Abstract:Low-temperature oxidation of CO, perhaps the most extensively studied reaction in the history of heterogeneous catalysis, is becoming increasingly important in the context of cleaning air and lowering automotive emissions. Hopcalite catalysts (mixtures of manganese and copper oxides) were originally developed for purifying air in submarines, but they are not especially active at ambient temperatures and are also deactivated by the presence of moisture. Noble metal catalysts, on the other hand, are water tolerant but usually require temperatures above 100 degrees C for efficient operation. Gold exhibits high activity at low temperatures and superior stability under moisture, but only when deposited in nanoparticulate form on base transition-metal oxides. The development of active and stable catalysts without noble metals for low-temperature CO oxidation under an ambient atmosphere remains a significant challenge. Here we report that tricobalt tetraoxide nanorods not only catalyse CO oxidation at temperatures as low as -77 degrees C but also remain stable in a moist stream of normal feed gas. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the Co(3)O(4) nanorods predominantly expose their {110} planes, favouring the presence of active Co(3+) species at the surface. Kinetic analyses reveal that the turnover frequency associated with individual Co(3+) sites on the nanorods is similar to that of the conventional nanoparticles of this material, indicating that the significantly higher reaction rate that we have obtained with a nanorod morphology is probably due to the surface richness of active Co(3+) sites. These results show the importance of morphology control in the preparation of base transition-metal oxides as highly efficient oxidation catalysts.
Atomically dispersed Ru supported on microporous CoO ultrathin nanosheets synthesized by melamine induction for a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Two dimensional materials show unique advantages in catalysis. In this work, it was found that melamine could induce the directional growth of cobalt-based catalysts to form an ultra-thin two-dimensional hexagonal nanosheet structure with only 1.5 nm. In addition, these hexagonal nanosheets (HNs) could grow into a microporous structure under high temperature conditions, and the finally formed CoO hexagonal porous nanosheets (HPNs) had a surface area 11.3 times that of the nanoparticles. Embedding 1.25 wt% of monoatomic ruthenium in the CoO HPNs (CoO/Ru 1.25% HPNs) allowed the catalyst to have more active charge storage and transfer centers. The results showed that the overpotential of CoO/Ru 1.25% HPNs was 64 mV lower than that of CoO nanoparticles at 10 mA cm −2 . The Tafel slope of CoO/Ru 1.25% HPNs was only half that of CoO nanoparticles, indicating that a small amount of Ru dispersion and the two-dimensional structure control significantly increased the kinetic rate in the oxygen evolution reaction. The DFT results showed that the Ru single atoms in CoO/Ru HPNs (111) possessed the lowest energy barrier (1.19 eV). The Ru single atoms could effectively reconstruct the neighboring localized structure in the formation of ̇OOH, which desirably decreased the free energy of the system.

Abstract:Forming core-shell and alloy structures offers generally two ways to design efficient Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we combined these two strategies and invented a versatile aqueous route to synthesize octahedral Pd@Pt1.8Ni core-shell nanocrystals. The Pt/Ni atomic ratios in the resultant shells can be varied from 0.6 to 1.8, simply by changing the amounts of Pt and Ni precursors, with the other conditions unchanged. Experimental studies showed that the mass activities of as-prepared catalysts were 5 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C. We believe that the ultrathin PtNi shells enclosed by {111} facets made it possible to reduce the Pt content while retaining the catalytic activity toward ORR. This strategy may be extended to the preparation of other multimetallic nanocrystals with shaped and ultrathin alloy shells, which is conducive to design highly active catalysts.
CO Oxidation on Ru-Pt Bimetallic Nanoclusters Supported on TiO2(101): the Effect of Charge Polarization

Abstract:Pt-based catalyst is widely used in CO oxidation, while its catalytic activity is often undermined because of the CO poisoning effect. Here, using density functional theory, we propose the use of a Ru-Pt bimetallic cluster supported on TiO2 for CO oxidation, to achieve both high activity and low CO poisoning effect. Excellent catalytic activity is obtained in a Ru1Pt7/TiO2(101) system, which is ascribed to strong electric fields induced by charge polarization between one Ru atom and its neighboring Pt atoms. Because of its lower electronegativity, the Ru atom donates electrons to neighboring Pt. This induces strong electric fields around the top-layered Ru, substantially promoting the adsorption of O2/CO + O2 and eliminating the CO poisoning effect. In addition, the charge polarization also drives the d-band center of the Ru1Pt7 cluster to up-shift to the Fermi level. For surface O2 activation/CO oxidation, the strong electric field and d-band center close to the Fermi level can promote the adsorption of O2 and CO as well as reduce the reaction barrier of the rate-determining step. Meanwhile, since O2 easily dissociates on Ru1Pt7/TiO2(101) resulting in unwanted oxidation of Ru and Pt, a CO-rich condition is necessary to protect the catalyst at high temperature.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and CO-tolerant hydrogen oxidation electrocatalysts is crucial for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC). In this work, a unique carbon molecular sieve (CMS) coating strategy is demonstrated for Ru nanoclusters, featuring strongly size sieving ultramicropores, which act as a highly efficient and CO-tolerant hydrogen electrocatalyst in alkaline conditions. The CMS coating thickness and pore size could be regulated by low-temperature carbonization of polydopamine which was beforehand in-situ polymerized over the Ru nanoclusters. It is demonstrated that dominant sub-4 Å ultramicropores in /C-400 are beneficial for H 2 /CO separation. Taking advantage of such a physical sieving barrier, along with the electronic modulation of Ru by the carbon coating layer, the CO adsorption over the Ru surface is suppressed and meanwhile, the hydrogen/oxygen species adsorption energy is optimized. The /C-400 catalyst exhibits exceptional HOR activity with a specific activity of 0.30 mA cm -2 Ru and a mass activity of 0.25 A mg −1 Ru , which are 3-folds and 1.7-folds of the counterpart Pt/C catalyst, respectively. More importantly, the catalyst is highly tolerant to CO. In the presence of 100 ppm CO, the HOR current with the /C-400 catalyst lowers by just 9.5%, but the Pt/C catalyst drops by 33.3% in the chronoamperometry test. This work highlights the tremendous potential of the encapsulating approach in refreshing catalyst performances via rationally engineering the encapsulating layer structures.
