Abstract:Atomically thin van der Waals materials stacked with an interlayer twist have proven to be an excellent platform toward achieving gate-tunable correlated phenomena linked to the formation of flat electronic bands. In this work we demonstrate the formation of emergent correlated phases in multilayer rhombohedral graphene-a simple material that also exhibits a flat electronic band edge but without the need of having a moire superlattice induced by twisted van der Waals layers. We show that two layers of bilayer graphene that are twisted by an arbitrary tiny angle host large (micrometer-scale) regions of uniform rhombohedral four-layer (ABCA) graphene that can be independently studied. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that ABCA graphene hosts an unprecedentedly sharp van Hove singularity of 3-5-meV half-width. We demonstrate that when this van Hove singularity straddles the Fermi level, a correlated many-body gap emerges with peak-to-peak value of 9.5 meV at charge neutrality. Mean-field theoretical calculations for model with short-ranged interactions indicate that two primary candidates for the appearance of this broken symmetry state are a charge-transfer excitonic insulator and a ferrimagnet. Finally, we show that ABCA graphene hosts surface topological helical edge states at natural interfaces with ABAB graphene which can be turned on and off with gate voltage, implying that small-angle twisted double-bilayer graphene is an ideal programmable topological quantum material.

Abstract:Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moiré materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrate that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^\circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap between flat and remote bands. Since ABC trilayer graphene and twisted bilayer graphene are known to host broken-symmetry phases, we further investigate the ostensibly similar magic angle AtABC system. We study the effect of electron-electron interactions in AtABC using both Hartree theory and an atomic Hubbard theory to calculate the magnetic phase diagram as a function of doping, twist angle, and perpendicular electric field. Our analysis reveals a rich variety of magnetic orderings, including ferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism, and demonstrates that a perpendicular electric field makes AtABC more susceptible to magnetic ordering.

Abstract:The recent discovery of correlated insulating states and superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene has opened the door to a new approach to designing correlated materials by controlling the twist angles. In this study, the authors propose a large class of graphene-based moiré heterostructures which similarly exhibit flat bands at a sequence of magic angles whose pattern is analytically related to the bilayer magic angles. Abstract:Highly controlled electronic correlation in twisted graphene heterostructures has gained enormous research interests recently, encouraging exploration in a wide range of moiré superlattices beyond the celebrated twisted bilayer graphene. Here we characterize correlated states in an alternating twisted Bernal bilayer–monolayer–monolayer graphene of ∼ 1.74°, and find that both van Hove singularities and multiple correlated states are asymmetrically tuned by displacement fields. In particular, when one electron per moiré unit cell is occupied in the electron-side flat band, or the hole-side flat band (i.e., three holes per moiré unit cell), the correlated peaks are found to counterintuitively grow with heating and maximize around 20 K – a signature of Pomeranchuk effect. Our multilayer heterostructure opens more opportunities to engineer complicated systems for investigating correlated phenomena.

Independently Tunable Flat Bands and Correlations in a Graphene Double Moiré System

Abstract:We report on a double moiré system consisting of four graphene layers, where the top and bottom pairs form small-twist-angle bilayer graphene, and the middle interface has a large rotational mismatch. This system shows clear signatures of two sets of spatially separated flat bands associated with the top and bottom twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) subsystems, each independently tunable. Thermodynamic analysis reveals weak correlations between layers that allow the chemical potential to be measured as a function of carrier density for each constituent TBG. We find that correlated insulating states at integer number of electrons per moiré unit cell are most robust near magic angle, whereas gapped states at neutrality are more robust at larger twist angles.

Abstract:Abstract Flat-band physics of Moiré superlattices, originally discovered in the celebrated twisted bilayer graphene, have recently been intensively explored in multilayer graphene systems that can be further controlled by electric field. In this work, we experimentally find the evidence of correlated insulators at half filling of the electron moiré band of twisted monolayer-trilayer graphene with a twist angle around 1.2 degrees. Van Hove singularity (VHS), manifested as enhanced resistance and zero Hall voltage, is observed to be distinct in conduction and valence flat bands. It also depends on the direction and magnitude of displacement fields, consistent with the asymmetric crystal structure. While the resistance ridges at VHS can be enhanced by magnetic fields, when they cross commensurate fillings of the moiré superlattice in the conduction band, the enhancement is so strong that signatures of correlated insulator appear, which may further develop into an energy gap depending on the correlation strength. At last, Fermi velocity derived from temperature coefficients of resistivity is compared between conduction and valence bands with different displacement fields. It is found that electronic correlation has a negative dependence on Fermi velocity, which in turn could be used to quantify the correlation strength.

Abstract:Understanding and tuning correlated states is of great interest and importance to modern condensed-matter physics. The recent discovery of unconventional superconductivity and Mott-like insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene presents a unique platform to study correlation phenomena, in which the Coulomb energy dominates over the quenched kinetic energy as a result of hybridized flat bands. Extending this approach to the case of twisted multilayer graphene would allow even higher control over the band structure because of the reduced symmetry of the system. Here we study electronic transport properties of twisted monolayer–bilayer graphene (a bilayer on top of monolayer graphene heterostructure). We observe the formation of van Hove singularities that are highly tunable by changing either the twist angle or external electric field and can cause strong correlation effects under optimum conditions. We provide basic theoretical interpretations of the observed electronic structure.

Spin and Charge Fluctuation Induced Pairing in ABCB Tetralayer Graphene

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental realization of ABCB stacked tetralayer graphene [Wirth et al., ACS Nano 16, 16617 (2022)], we study correlated phenomena in moiré-less graphene tetralayers for realistic interaction profiles using an orbital resolved random phase approximation approach. We demonstrate that magnetic fluctuations originating from local interactions are crucial close to the van Hove singularities on the electron- and hole-doped side promoting layer selective ferrimagnetic states. Spin fluctuations around these magnetic states enhance unconventional spin-triplet, valley-singlet superconductivity with $f$-wave symmetry due to intervalley scattering. Charge fluctuations arising from long range Coulomb interactions promote doubly degenerate p-wave superconductivity close to the van Hove singularities. At the conduction band edge of ABCB graphene, we find that both spin and charge fluctuations drive $f$-wave superconductivity. Our analysis suggests a strong competition between superconducting states emerging from long- and short-ranged Coulomb interactions and thus stresses the importance of microscopically derived interaction profiles to make reliable predictions for the origin of superconductivity in graphene based heterostructures.

Abstract:Twisted graphene multi-layers have been recently demonstrated to share several correlation-driven behaviours with twisted bilayer graphene. In general, the van Hove singularities (VHSs) can be used as a proxy of the tendency for correlated behaviours. In this paper, we adopt an atomistic method by combining tight-binding method with the semi-classical molecular dynamics to investigate the electronic structures of twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) with two independent twist angles. The two independent twist angles can lead to the interference of the moiré patterns forming a variety of commensurate/incommensurate complex supermoiré patterns. In particular, the lattice relaxation, twist angle and angle disorder effects on the VHS are discussed. We find that the lattice relaxation significantly influence the position and magnitude of the VHSs. In the supermoiré TTG, the moiré interference provides constructive or destructive effects depending on the relative twist angle. By modulating the two independent twist angles, novel superstructures, for instance, the Kagome-like lattice, could constructed via the moiré pattern. Moreover, we demonstrate that a slight change in twist angles (angle disorder) provides a significant suppression of the peak of the VHSs. Apart from the moiré length, the evolution of the VHSs and the LDOS mapping in real space could be used to identify the twist angles in the complicated TTG. In practice, our work could provide a guide for exploring the flat band behaviours in the supermoiré TTG experimentally.
Electric Field Tunable Correlated States and Magnetic Phase Transitions in Twisted Bilayer-Bilayer Graphene

Abstract:The recent discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has paved the way to the experimental investigation of electronic correlations in tunable flat band systems realized in twisted van der Waals heterostructures. This novel twist angle degree of freedom and control should be generalizable to other 2D systems, which may exhibit similar correlated physics behavior while at the same time enabling new techniques to tune and control the strength of electron-electron interactions. Here, we report on a new highly tunable correlated system based on small-angle twisted bilayer-bilayer graphene (TBBG), consisting of two rotated sheets of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. We find that TBBG exhibits a rich phase diagram, with tunable correlated insulators states that are highly sensitive to both twist angle and to the application of an electric displacement field, the latter reflecting the inherent polarizability of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. We find correlated insulator states that can be switched on and off by the displacement field at all integer electron fillings of the moiré unit cell. The response of these correlated states to magnetic fields points towards evidence of electrically switchable magnetism. Moreover, the strong dependence of the resistance at low temperature and near the correlated insulator states indicates possible proximity to a superconducting phase. Furthermore, in the regime of lower twist angles, TBBG shows multiple sets of flat bands near charge neutrality, resulting in numerous correlated states corresponding to half-filling of each of these flat bands. Our results pave the way to the exploration of novel twist-angle and electric-field controlled correlated phases of matter in novel multi-flat band twisted superlattices.

Topological flat bands in a family of multilayer graphene moiré lattices

Abstract:Moiré materials host a wealth of intertwined correlated and topological states of matter, all arising from flat electronic bands with nontrivial quantum geometry. A prominent example is the family of alternating-twist magic-angle graphene stacks, which exhibit symmetry-broken states at rational fillings of the moiré band and superconductivity close to half filling. Here, we introduce a second family of twisted graphene multilayers made up of twisted sheets of $M$- and $N$-layer Bernal-stacked graphene flakes. Calculations indicate that applying an electric displacement field isolates a flat and topological moiré conduction band that is primarily localized to a single graphene sheet below the moiré interface. Phenomenologically, the result is a striking similarity in the hierarchies of symmetry-broken phases across this family of twisted graphene multilayers. Our results show that this family of structures offers promising new opportunities for the discovery of exotic new correlated and topological phenomena, enabled by using the layer number to fine tune the flat moiré band and its screening environment.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are an emergent class of metamaterials comprised of vertically stacked two-dimensional (2D) building blocks, which provide us with a vast tool set to engineer their properties on top of the already rich tunability of 2D materials. One of the knobs, the twist angle between different layers, plays a crucial role in the ultimate electronic properties of a vdW heterostructure and does not have a direct analog in other systems such as MBE-grown semiconductor heterostructures. For small twist angles, the moiré pattern produced by the lattice misorientation creates a long-range modulation. So far, the study of the effect of twist angles in vdW heterostructures has been mostly concentrated in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) twisted structures, which exhibit relatively weak interlayer interaction due to the presence of a large bandgap in h-BN. Here we show that when two graphene sheets are twisted by an angle close to the theoretically predicted 'magic angle', the resulting flat band structure near charge neutrality gives rise to a strongly-correlated electronic system. These flat bands exhibit half-filling insulating phases at zero magnetic field, which we show to be a Mott-like insulator arising from electrons localized in the moiré superlattice. These unique properties of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TwBLG) open up a new playground for exotic many-body quantum phases in a 2D platform made of pure carbon and without magnetic field. The easy accessibility of the flat bands, the electrical tunability, and the bandwidth tunability though twist angle may pave the way towards more exotic correlated systems, such as unconventional superconductors or quantum spin liquids.

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene with a twist angle of around 1.1° features a pair of isolated flat electronic bands and forms a strongly correlated electronic platform. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe local properties of highly tunable twisted bilayer graphene devices and show that the flat bands strongly deform when aligned with the Fermi level. At half filling of the bands, we observe the development of gaps originating from correlated insulating states. Near charge neutrality, we find a previously unidentified correlated regime featuring a substantially enhanced flat band splitting that we describe within a microscopic model predicting a strong tendency towards nematic ordering. Our results provide insights into symmetry breaking correlation effects and highlight the importance of electronic interactions for all filling factors in twisted bilayer graphene.

Abstract:The discovery of interaction-driven insulating and superconducting phases in moiré van der Waals heterostructures has sparked considerable interest in understanding the novel correlated physics of these systems. While a significant number of studies have focused on twisted bilayer graphene, correlated insulating states and a superconductivity-like transition up to 12 K have been reported in recent transport measurements of twisted double bilayer graphene. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of gate-tunable twisted double bilayer graphene devices. We observe splitting of the van Hove singularity peak by ~20 meV at half-filling of the conduction flat band, with a corresponding reduction of the local density of states at the Fermi level. By mapping the tunneling differential conductance we show that this correlated system exhibits energetically split states that are spatially delocalized throughout the different regions in the moiré unit cell, inconsistent with order originating solely from onsite Coulomb repulsion within strongly-localized orbitals. We have performed self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that suggest exchange-driven spontaneous symmetry breaking in the degenerate conduction flat band is the origin of the observed correlated state. Our results provide new insight into the nature of electron-electron interactions in twisted double bilayer graphene and related moiré systems.

Helical trilayer graphene: a moiré platform for strongly-interacting topological bands

Abstract:Quantum geometry of electronic wavefunctions results in fascinating topological phenomena. A prominent example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in which a Hall voltage arises in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The AHE requires a coexistence of Berry curvature and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. These conditions can be realized in two-dimensional moiré systems with broken $xy$-inversion symmetry ($C_{2z}$) that host flat electronic bands. Here, we explore helical trilayer graphene (HTG), three graphene layers twisted sequentially by the same angle forming two misoriented moiré patterns. Although HTG is globally $C_{2z}$-symmetric, surprisingly we observe clear signatures of topological bands. At a magic angle $\theta_\mathrm{m}\approx 1.8^\circ$, we uncover a robust phase diagram of correlated and magnetic states using magnetotransport measurements. Lattice relaxation leads to large periodic domains in which $C_{2z}$ is broken on the moiré scale. Each domain harbors flat topological bands with valley-contrasting Chern numbers $\pm(1,-2)$. We find correlated states at integer electron fillings per moiré unit cell $\nu=1,2,3$ and fractional fillings $2/3,7/2$ with the AHE arising at $\nu=1,3$ and $2/3,7/2$. At $\nu=1$, a time-reversal symmetric phase appears beyond a critical electric displacement field, indicating a topological phase transition. Finally, hysteresis upon sweeping $\nu$ points to first-order phase transitions across a spatial mosaic of Chern domains separated by a network of topological gapless edge states. We establish HTG as an important platform that realizes ideal conditions for exploring strongly interacting topological phases and, due to its emergent moiré-scale symmetries, demonstrates a novel way to engineer topology.

Abstract:Electronic correlations in two-dimensional materials play a crucial role in stabilising emergent phases of matter. The realisation of correlation-driven phenomena in graphene has remained a longstanding goal, primarily due to the absence of strong electron-electron interactions within its low-energy bands. In this context, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently emerged as a novel platform featuring correlated phases favoured by the low-energy flat bands of the underlying moiré superlattice. Notably, the observation of correlated insulators and superconductivity has garnered significant attention, leading to substantial progress in theoretical and experimental studies aiming to elucidate the origin and interplay between these two phases. A wealth of correlated phases with unprecedented tunability was discovered subsequently, including orbital ferromagnetism, Chern insulators, strange metallicity, density waves, and nematicity. However, a comprehensive understanding of these closely competing phases remains elusive. The ability to controllably twist and stack multiple graphene layers has enabled the creation of a whole new family of moiré superlattices with myriad properties being discovered at a fast pace. Here, we review the progress and development achieved so far, encompassing the rich phase diagrams offered by these graphene-based moiré systems. Additionally, we discuss multiple phases recently observed in non-moiré multilayer graphene systems. Finally, we outline future opportunities and challenges for the exploration of hidden phases in this new generation of moiré materials.

Abstract:Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) exhibits a range of strongly correlated electronic phases that spontaneously break its underlying symmetries. The microscopic nature of these phases and their residual symmetries stands as a key outstanding puzzle whose resolution promises to shed light on the origin of superconductivity in twisted materials. Here we investigate correlated phases of MATTG using scanning tunneling microscopy and identify striking signatures of interaction-driven spatial symmetry breaking. In low-strain samples, over a filling range of about 2-3 electrons or holes per moiré unit cell, we observe atomic-scale reconstruction of the graphene lattice that accompanies a correlated gap in the tunneling spectrum. This short-scale restructuring appears as a Kekulé supercell -- implying spontaneous inter-valley coherence between electrons -- and persists in a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures that coincide with the development of the gap. Large-scale maps covering several moiré unit cells further reveal a slow evolution of the Kekulé pattern, indicating that atomic-scale reconstruction coexists with translation symmetry breaking at the much longer moiré scale. We employ auto-correlation and Fourier analyses to extract the intrinsic periodicity of these phases and find that they are consistent with the theoretically proposed incommensurate Kekulé spiral order. Moreover, we find that the wavelength characterizing moiré-scale modulations monotonically decreases with hole doping away from half-filling of the bands and depends only weakly on the magnetic field. Our results provide essential insights into the nature of MATTG correlated phases in the presence of strain and imply that superconductivity emerges from an inter-valley coherent parent state.

Abstract:Superconductivity can occur under conditions approaching broken-symmetry parent states<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1695-0#ref-CR1">1</a>. In bilayer graphene, the twisting of one layer with respect to the other at 'magic' twist angles of around 1 degree leads to the emergence of ultra-flat moiré superlattice minibands. Such bands are a rich and highly tunable source of strong-correlation physics<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1695-0#ref-CR5">5</a>, notably superconductivity, which emerges close to interaction-induced insulating states<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1695-0#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1695-0#ref-CR7">7</a>. Here we report the fabrication of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene devices with highly uniform twist angles. The reduction in twist-angle disorder reveals the presence of insulating states at all integer occupancies of the fourfold spin–valley degenerate flat conduction and valence bands—that is, at moiré band filling factors ν = 0, ±1, ±2, ±3. At ν ≈ −2, superconductivity is observed below critical temperatures of up to 3 kelvin. We also observe three new superconducting domes at much lower temperatures, close to the ν = 0 and ν = ±1 insulating states. Notably, at ν = ± 1 we find states with non-zero Chern numbers. For ν = −1 the insulating state exhibits a sharp hysteretic resistance enhancement when a perpendicular magnetic field greater than 3.6 tesla is applied, which is consistent with a field-driven phase transition. Our study shows that broken-symmetry states, interaction-driven insulators, orbital magnets, states with non-zero Chern numbers and superconducting domes occur frequently across a wide range of moiré flat band fillings, including close to charge neutrality. This study provides a more detailed view of the phenomenology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, adding to our evolving understanding of its emergent properties.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent observation of correlated insulator states and unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, we study the dependence of electron correlations on the twist angle and reveal the existence of strong correlations over a narrow range of twist-angles near the magic angle. Specifically, we determine the on-site and extended Hubbard parameters of the low-energy Wannier states using an atomistic quantum-mechanical approach. The ratio of the on-site Hubbard parameter and the width of the flat bands, which is an indicator of the strength of electron correlations, depends sensitively on the screening by the semiconducting substrate and the metallic gates. Including the effect of long-ranged Coulomb interactions significantly reduces electron correlations and explains the experimentally observed sensitivity of strong correlation phenomena on twist angle.
