Abstract:Retinal vessel segmentation is a crucial step in diagnosing and screening various diseases, including diabetes, ophthalmologic diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we propose an effective and efficient method for vessel segmentation in color fundus images using encoder-decoder based octave convolution networks. Compared with other convolution networks utilizing standard convolution for feature extraction, the proposed method utilizes octave convolutions and octave transposed convolutions for learning multiple-spatial-frequency features, thus can better capture retinal vasculatures with varying sizes and shapes. To provide the network the capability of learning how to decode multifrequency features, we extend octave convolution and propose a new operation named octave transposed convolution. A novel architecture of convolutional neural network, named as Octave UNet integrating both octave convolutions and octave transposed convolutions is proposed based on the encoder-decoder architecture of UNet, which can generate high resolution vessel segmentation in one single forward feeding without post-processing steps. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed Octave UNet outperforms the baseline UNet achieving better or comparable performance to the state-of-the-art methods with fast processing speed. Specifically, the proposed method achieves 0.9664 / 0.9713 / 0.9759 / 0.9698 accuracy, 0.8374 / 0.8664 / 0.8670 / 0.8076 sensitivity, 0.9790 / 0.9798 / 0.9840 / 0.9831 specificity, 0.8127 / 0.8191 / 0.8313 / 0.7963 F1 score, and 0.9835 / 0.9875 / 0.9905 / 0.9845 Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve, on DRIVE, STARE, CHASE_DB1, and HRF datasets, respectively.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a complication of long-standing, unchecked diabetes and one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. This paper focuses on improved and robust methods to extract some of the features of DR, viz. Blood Vessels and Exudates. Blood vessels are segmented using multiple morphological and thresholding operations. For the segmentation of exudates, k-means clustering and contour detection on the original images are used. Extensive noise reduction is performed to remove false positives from the vessel segmentation algorithm's results. The localization of Optic Disc using k-means clustering and template matching is also performed. Lastly, this paper presents a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) model with 14 Convolutional Layers and 2 Fully Connected Layers, for the automatic, binary diagnosis of DR. The vessel segmentation, optic disc localization and DCNN achieve accuracies of 95.93%, 98.77% and 75.73% respectively. FS-Net: Full Scale Network and Adaptive Threshold for Improving Extraction of Micro-Retinal Vessel Structures

Abstract:Retinal vascular segmentation, is a widely researched subject in biomedical image processing, aims to relieve ophthalmologists' workload when treating and detecting retinal disorders. However, segmenting retinal vessels has its own set of challenges, with prior techniques failing to generate adequate results when segmenting branches and microvascular structures. The neural network approaches used recently are characterized by the inability to keep local and global properties together and the failure to capture tiny end vessels make it challenging to attain the desired result. To reduce this retinal vessel segmentation problem, we propose a full-scale micro-vessel extraction mechanism based on an encoder-decoder neural network architecture, sigmoid smoothing, and an adaptive threshold method. The network consists of of residual, encoder booster, bottleneck enhancement, squeeze, and excitation building blocks. All of these blocks together help to improve the feature extraction and prediction of the segmentation map. The proposed solution has been evaluated using the DRIVE, CHASE-DB1, and STARE datasets, and competitive results are obtained when compared with previous studies. The AUC and accuracy on the DRIVE dataset are 0.9884 and 0.9702, respectively. On the CHASE-DB1 dataset, the scores are 0.9903 and 0.9755, respectively. On the STARE dataset, the scores are 0.9916 and 0.9750, respectively. The performance achieved is one step ahead of what has been done in previous studies, and this results in a higher chance of having this solution in real-life diagnostic centers that seek ophthalmologists attention.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a primitive cause of blindness in diabetic patients. There are chances for DR in certain cases, due to the damage in the retinal vascular area. It may lead to blindness or loss of vision if DR is not detected. At the final stage, there is a threat of loss of vision. During the initial stage of this chronic disease, it has been observed that no symptoms are required to determine the loss of vision. Hence, there is a need for better and early diagnosis of the blood vessels to prevent vision loss in diabetic patients. The primary task of early diagnosis is to carry out a proper segmentation process. But, segmenting vasculture from retinal photographs is a vital laborious effort. Therefore, blood vessel segmentation of fundus images has grown in favor among researchers. There are many existing methods to process bio-medical retinal images, and most of them are computationally intensive and difficult to deploy in real-time. The objective of this work is to develop a novel and efficient deep learning framework to perform the segmentation with the U-Net as a primary module. The U-Net architecture has been modified so that the model would be lightweight and the model is cost efficient in terms of time and space complexity. The proposed method, DRLeU- Net, is evaluated using a publicly available color retinal fundus images dataset. The model was trained using the k-fold cross-validation technique. The proposed method shows a promising results of 0.988 AUC (Area Under the Curve) and 0.94 IOU (Intersection over Union when compared with the existing methods.The robust and efficient deep learning framework has been deployed to do the segmentation process efficiently and it has evauated with the expremental results by comparing with the existing methodologies.

Retinal Vessels Segmentation Based on Dilated Multi-Scale Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract:Accurate segmentation of retinal vessels is a basic step in Diabetic retinopathy(DR) detection. Most methods based on deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) have small receptive fields, and hence they are unable to capture global context information of larger regions, with difficult to identify lesions. The final segmented retina vessels contain more noise with low classification accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a DCNN structure named as D-Net. In the proposed D-Net, the dilation convolution is used in the backbone network to obtain a larger receptive field without losing spatial resolution, so as to reduce the loss of feature information and to reduce the difficulty of tiny thin vessels segmentation. The large receptive field can better distinguished between the lesion area and the blood vessel area. In the proposed Multi-Scale Information Fusion module (MSIF), parallel convolution layers with different dilation rates are used, so that the model can obtain more dense feature information and better capture retinal vessel information of different sizes. In the decoding module, the skip layer connection is used to propagate context information to higher resolution layers, so as to prevent low-level information from passing the entire network structure. Finally, our method was verified on DRIVE, STARE and CHASE dataset. The experimental results show that our network structure outperforms some state-of-art method, such as N4-fields, U-Net, and DRIU in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and AUCROC. Particularly, D-Net outperforms U-Net by 1.04%, 1.23% and 2.79% in DRIVE, STARE, and CHASE three dataset, respectively.

Abstract:Biomedical image segmentation plays an important role in Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)-related biomarker detection. DR is an ocular disease that affects the retina in people with diabetes and could lead to visual impairment if management measures are not taken in a timely manner. In DR screening programs, the presence and severity of DR are identified and classified based on various microvascular lesions detected by qualified ophthalmic screeners. Such a detection process is time-consuming and error-prone, given the small size of the microvascular lesions and the volume of images, especially with the increasing prevalence of diabetes. Automated image processing using deep learning methods is recognized as a promising approach to support diabetic retinopathy screening. In this paper, we propose a novel compound scaling encoder-decoder network architecture to improve the accuracy and running efficiency of microvascular lesion segmentation. In the encoder phase, we develop a lightweight encoder to speed up the training process, where the encoder network is scaled up in depth, width, and resolution dimensions. In the decoder phase, an attention mechanism is introduced to yield higher accuracy. Specifically, we employ Concurrent Spatial and Channel Squeeze and Channel Excitation (scSE) blocks to fully utilise both spatial and channel-wise information. Additionally, a compound loss function is incorporated with transfer learning to handle the problem of imbalanced data and further improve performance. To assess performance, our method is evaluated on two large-scale lesion segmentation datasets: DDR and FGADR datasets. Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common form of diabetic eye disease. Retinopathy can affect all diabetic patients and becomes particularly dangerous, increasing the risk of blindness, if it is left untreated. The success rate of its curability solemnly depends on diagnosis at an early stage. The development of automated computer aided disease diagnosis tools could help in faster detection of symptoms with a wider reach and reasonable cost. This paper proposes a method for the automated segmentation of retinal lesions and optic disk in fundus images using a deep fully convolutional neural network for semantic segmentation. This trainable segmentation pipeline consists of an encoder network, a corresponding decoder network followed by pixel-wise classification to segment microaneurysms, hemorrhages, hard exudates, soft exudates, optic disk from background. The network was trained using Binary cross entropy criterion with Sigmoid as the last layer, while during an additional SoftMax layer was used for boosting response of single class. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using sensitivity, positive prediction value (PPV) and accuracy as the metrices. Further, the position of the Optic disk is localised using the segmented output map.

Abstract:Identification of retinal diseases in automated screening methods, such as those used in clinical settings or computer-aided diagnosis, usually depends on the localization and segmentation of the Optic Disc (OD) and fovea. However, this task is difficult since these anatomical features have irregular spatial, texture, and shape characteristics, limited sample sizes, and domain shifts due to different data distributions across datasets. This study proposes a novel Multiresolution Cascaded Attention U-Net (MCAU-Net) model that addresses these problems by optimally balancing receptive field size and computational efficiency. The MCAU-Net utilizes two skip connections to accurately localize and segment the OD and fovea in fundus images. We incorporated a Multiresolution Wavelet Pooling Module (MWPM) into the CNN at each stage of U-Net input to compensate for spatial information loss. Additionally, we integrated a cascaded connection of the spatial and channel attentions as a skip connection in MCAU-Net to concentrate precisely on the target object and improve model convergence for segmenting and localizing OD and fovea centers. The proposed model has a low parameter count of 0.8 million, improving computational efficiency and reducing the risk of overfitting. For OD segmentation, the MCAU-Net achieves high IoU values of 0.9771, 0.945, and 0.946 for the DRISHTI-GS, DRIONS-DB, and IDRiD datasets, respectively, outperforming previous results for all three datasets. For the IDRiD dataset, the MCAU-Net locates the OD center with an Euclidean Distance (ED) of 16.90 pixels and the fovea center with an ED of 33.45 pixels, demonstrating its effectiveness in overcoming the common limitations of state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy refers to the pathology of the retina induced by diabetes and is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is critical to avoid vision problem through continuous screening and treatment. In traditional clinical practice, the involved lesions are manually detected using photographs of the fundus. However, this task is cumbersome and time-consuming and requires intense effort due to the small size of lesion and low contrast of the images. Thus, computer-assisted diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy based on the detection of red lesions is actively being explored recently. In this paper, we present a convolutional neural network with residual skip connection for the segmentation of exudates in retinal images. To improve the performance of network architecture, a suitable image augmentation technique is used. The proposed network can robustly segment exudates with high accuracy, which makes it suitable for diabetic retinopathy screening. Comparative performance analysis of three benchmark databases: HEI-MED, E-ophtha, and DiaretDB1 is presented. It is shown that the proposed method achieves accuracy (0.98, 0.99, 0.98) and sensitivity (0.97, 0.92, and 0.95) on E-ophtha, HEI-MED, and DiaReTDB1, respectively.
RMSDSC‐Net: A robust multiscale feature extraction with depthwise separable convolution network for optic disc and cup segmentation

Abstract:Glaucoma is an eye disease that leads to irreversible vision loss. Accurate Optic Disc (OD) and Optic Cup (OC) segmentation can effectively facilitate ophthalmologist in glaucoma diagnosis. Recently, a series of deep learning approaches attain promising performance in OD and OC segmentation but still face the challenge to precisely segment OC boundary with enhanced computational efficiency. To address this issue, we propose a novel network named Robust Multiscale Feature Extraction with Depthwise Separable Convolution (RMSDSC‐Net), which can better solve the challenging tradeoff between segmentation performance and network cost. The proposed RMSDSC‐Net is mainly composed of Multiscale Input (MSI), Depthwise Separable Convolution Unit (DSCU), Dilated Convolution Block (DCB), and External Residual Connection (ERC). First, the introduction of MSI can reduce the information loss due to the pooling layers used in the network for capturing rich feature representations. Next, to enhance segmentation performance and computational efficiency, this paper designs DSCU and DCB modules to avoid spatial information loss from minor details of the image and preserve more high‐level semantic features. Finally, this paper develops ERC established between the encoding layers and decoding layers to minimize the feature degradation problem. Hence, a high segmentation performance can be achieved using a shallow network. To evaluate the performance of the proposed network, extensive experiments have been enforced on two publicly available databases, DRISHTI‐GS and REFUGE. Our approach outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art approaches with the Dice Coefficient of (0.978, 0.919) and (0.965, 0.910) for OD and OC segmentation on DRISHTI‐GS and REFUGE databases, respectively. As a result, the proposed approach has a strong potential in analyzing fundus images for glaucoma diagnosis.

Robust Segmentation of Optic Disc and Cup from Fundus Images Using Deep Neural Networks

Abstract:Optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) are regions of prominent clinical interest in a retinal fundus image. They are the primary indicators of a glaucomatous condition. With the advent and success of deep learning for healthcare research, several approaches have been proposed for the segmentation of important features in retinal fundus images. We propose a novel approach for the simultaneous segmentation of the OD and OC using a residual encoder-decoder network (REDNet) based regional convolutional neural network (RCNN). The RED-RCNN is motivated by the Mask RCNN (MRCNN). Performance comparisons with the state-of-the-art techniques and extensive validations on standard publicly available fundus image datasets show that RED-RCNN has superior performance compared with MRCNN. RED-RCNN results in Sensitivity, Specificity, Accuracy, Precision, Dice and Jaccard indices of 95.64%, 99.9%, 99.82%, 95.68%, 95.64%, 91.65%, respectively, for OD segmentation, and 91.44%, 99.87%, 99.83%, 85.67%, 87.48%, 78.09%, respectively, for OC segmentation. Further, we perform two-stage glaucoma severity grading using the cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) computed based on the obtained OD/OC segmentation. The superior segmentation performance of RED-RCNN over MRCNN translates to higher accuracy in glaucoma severity grading.

DRStageNet: Deep Learning for Diabetic Retinopathy Staging from Fundus Images

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent complication of diabetes associated with a significant risk of vision loss. Timely identification is critical to curb vision impairment. Algorithms for DR staging from digital fundus images (DFIs) have been recently proposed. However, models often fail to generalize due to distribution shifts between the source domain on which the model was trained and the target domain where it is deployed. A common and particularly challenging shift is often encountered when the source- and target-domain supports do not fully overlap. In this research, we introduce DRStageNet, a deep learning model designed to mitigate this challenge. We used seven publicly available datasets, comprising a total of 93,534 DFIs that cover a variety of patient demographics, ethnicities, geographic origins and comorbidities. We fine-tune DINOv2, a pretrained model of self-supervised vision transformer, and implement a multi-source domain fine-tuning strategy to enhance generalization performance. We benchmark and demonstrate the superiority of our method to two state-of-the-art benchmarks, including a recently published foundation model. We adapted the grad-rollout method to our regression task in order to provide high-resolution explainability heatmaps. The error analysis showed that 59\% of the main errors had incorrect reference labels. DRStageNet is accessible at URL [upon acceptance of the manuscript].

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a long-term complication of diabetes, is notoriously hard to detect in its early stages due to the fact that it only shows a subset of symptoms. Standard diagnostic procedures for DR now include OCT and digital fundus imaging. If digital fundus images alone could provide a reliable diagnosis, then eliminating the costly optical coherence tomography would be beneficial for all parties involved. Optometrists and their patients will find this useful. Using deep convolutional neural networks, we provide a novel approach to this problem. Our approach deviates from standard DCNN methods by exchanging typical max-pooling layers with fractional max-pooling ones. In order to collect more subtle information for categorisation, two such DCNNs, each with a different number of layers, are trained. To establish these limits, we use deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and features extracted from picture metadata to train a support vector machine classifier. In our experiments, we used information from Kaggle's open DR detection database. We fed our model 34,124 training images, 1,000 validation examples, and 53,572 test images to train and test it. Each of the five classes in the proposed DR classifier corresponds to one of the steps in the DR process and is given a numeric value between 0 and 4. Experimental results show a higher identification rate (86.17%) than those found in the existing literature, indicating the suggested strategy may be effective. We have jointly developed an algorithm for machine learning and accompanying software, and we've named it Deep Retina. Images of the fundus acquired by the typical person using a portable ophthalmoscope may be instantly analyzed using our technology. This technology might be used for self-diagnosis, at-home care, and telemedicine.
DRG-Net: Interactive Joint Learning of Multi-lesion Segmentation and Classification for Diabetic Retinopathy Grading

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss in the world, and early DR detection is necessary to prevent vision loss and support an appropriate treatment. In this work, we leverage interactive machine learning and introduce a joint learning framework, termed DRG-Net, to effectively learn both disease grading and multi-lesion segmentation. Our DRG-Net consists of two modules: (i) DRG-AI-System to classify DR Grading, localize lesion areas, and provide visual explanations; (ii) DRG-Expert-Interaction to receive feedback from user-expert and improve the DRG-AI-System. To deal with sparse data, we utilize transfer learning mechanisms to extract invariant feature representations by using Wasserstein distance and adversarial learning-based entropy minimization. Besides, we propose a novel attention strategy at both low- and high-level features to automatically select the most significant lesion information and provide explainable properties. In terms of human interaction, we further develop DRG-Net as a tool that enables expert users to correct the system's predictions, which may then be used to update the system as a whole. Moreover, thanks to the attention mechanism and loss functions constraint between lesion features and classification features, our approach can be robust given a certain level of noise in the feedback of users. We have benchmarked DRG-Net on the two largest DR datasets, i.e., IDRID and FGADR, and compared it to various state-of-the-art deep learning networks. In addition to outperforming other SOTA approaches, DRG-Net is effectively updated using user feedback, even in a weakly-supervised manner.

Abstract:Objective: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its angiography (OCTA) have several advantages for the early detection and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, automated, complete DR classification frameworks based on both OCT and OCTA data have not been proposed. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method is proposed to fulfill a DR classification framework using en face OCT and OCTA. Methods: A densely and continuously connected neural network with adaptive rate dropout (DcardNet) is designed for the DR classification. In addition, adaptive label smoothing was proposed and used to suppress overfitting. Three separate classification levels are generated for each case based on the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy scale. At the highest level the network classifies scans as referable or non-referable for DR. The second level classifies the eye as non-DR, non-proliferative DR (NPDR), or proliferative DR (PDR). The last level classifies the case as no DR, mild and moderate NPDR, severe NPDR, and PDR. Results: We used 10-fold cross-validation with 10% of the data to assess the network's performance. The overall classification accuracies of the three levels were 95.7%, 85.0%, and 71.0% respectively. Conclusion/Significance: A reliable, sensitive and specific automated classification framework for referral to an ophthalmologist can be a key technology for reducing vision loss related to DR.

CLC-Net: Contextual and Local Collaborative Network for Lesion Segmentation in Diabetic Retinopathy Images

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness among people of working age. Fundus lesions are clinical signs of DR, and their recognition and delineation are important for early screening, grading, and monitoring of the disease. We propose in this work a fully automatic deep convolutional neural network method for simultaneous segmentation of four different types of DR-related fundus lesions. To exploit multi-scale image information, we propose a collaborative architecture that comprises a contextual branch and a local branch. An attention mechanism is designed to fuse feature maps from all decoding layers in order to effectively and fully combine informative features from the two branches. Moreover, an auxiliary classification task with a novel supervision scheme is introduced to reduce model overfitting and further improve the accuracy of lesion segmentation. Extensive experiments are conducted using three public fundus datasets, and our method produces a mean AUC value of 0.677, 0.629, and 0.581 on them respectively. The results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method, outperforming alternative strategies and other state-of-the-art methods in the literature.

Abstract:Retinal segmentation is a crucial step in the early warning of human health conditions. However, retinal blood vessels possess complex curvature, irregular distribution, and contain multi-scale fine structures, which make the limited receptive field of regular convolution challenging to process their vascular details efficiently. Additionally, the encoder-decoder based network leads to irreversible spatial information loss because of multiple downsampling, resulting in over-segmentation and missed segmentation of the vessels. For this reason, we develop a high-resolution network based on Deformable Convolution v3, called HRD-Net. By constructing a high-resolution representation, the network allows special attention to be paid to the details of tiny blood vessels. The proposed feature enhancement cascade module based on Deformable Convolution v3 can flexibly adapt and capture the ever-changing morphology and intricate connections of retinal blood vessels, ensuring the continuity of vessel segmentation. In the output phase of the network, the proposed global aggregation module integrates full-resolution feature maps while suppressing redundant features, achieving an effective fusion of high-level semantic information and spatial detail information. In addition, we have re-examined the selection criteria for activation and normalization methods, and also refine the network architectures from a spatial domain perspective to release redundant computational loads. Testing on the DRIVE, STARE, and CHASE_DB1 datasets indicates that HRD-Net, with fewer parameters, outperforms existing segmentation methods on several evaluation metrics such as F1, ACC, SE, SP, AUC, and IOU.

Abstract:Accurate segmentation of the optic disc (OD) regions from color fundus images is a critical procedure for computer-aided diagnosis of glaucoma. We present a novel deep learning network to automatically identify the OD regions. On the basis of the classical U-Net framework, we define a unique sub-network and a decoding convolutional block. The sub-network is used to preserve important textures and facilitate their detections, while the decoding block is used to improve the contrast of the regions-of-interest with their background. We integrate these two components into the classical U-Net framework to improve the accuracy and reliability of segmenting the OD regions depicted on color fundus images. We train and evaluate the developed network using three publicly available datasets (i.e., MESSIDOR, ORIGA, and REFUGE). The results on an independent testing set (n=1,970 images) show a segmentation performance with an average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), intersection over union (IOU), and Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.9377, 0.8854, and 0.9383 when trained on the global field-of-view images, respectively, and 0.9735, 0.9494, and 0.9594 when trained on the local disc region images. When compared with the other three classical networks (i.e., the U-Net, M-Net, and Deeplabv3) on the same testing datasets, the developed network demonstrates a relatively higher performance.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is caused as a result of Diabetes Mellitus which causes development of various retinal abrasions in the human retina. These lesions cause hindrance in vision and in severe cases, DR can lead to blindness. DR is observed amongst 80% of patients who have been diagnosed from prolonged diabetes for a period of 10–15 years. The manual process of periodic DR diagnosis and detection for necessary treatment, is time consuming and unreliable due to unavailability of resources and expert opinion. Therefore, computerized diagnostic systems which use Deep Learning (DL) Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, are proposed to learn DR patterns from fundus images and identify the severity of the disease. This paper proposes a comprehensive model using 26 state-of-the-art DL networks to assess and evaluate their performance, and which contribute for deep feature extraction and image classification of DR fundus images. In the proposed model, ResNet50 has shown highest overfitting in comparison to Inception V3, which has shown lowest overfitting when trained using the Kaggle’s EyePACS fundus image dataset. EfficientNetB4 is the most optimal, efficient and reliable DL algorithm in detection of DR, followed by InceptionResNetV2, NasNetLarge and DenseNet169. EfficientNetB4 has achieved a training accuracy of 99.37% and the highest validation accuracy of 79.11%. DenseNet201 has achieved the highest training accuracy of 99.58% and a validation accuracy of 76.80% which is less than the top-4 best performing models.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent vision-threatening disease worldwide. Laser marks are the scars left after panretinal photocoagulation, a treatment to prevent patients with severe DR from losing vision. In this study, we develop a deep learning algorithm based on the lightweight U-Net to segment laser marks from the color fundus photos, which could help indicate a stage or providing valuable auxiliary information for the care of DR patients. We prepared our training and testing data, manually annotated by trained and experienced graders from Image Reading Center, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, publicly available to fill the vacancy of public image datasets dedicated to the segmentation of laser marks. The lightweight U-Net, along with two postprocessing procedures, achieved an AUC of 0.9824, an optimal sensitivity of 94.16%, and an optimal specificity of 92.82% on the segmentation of laser marks in fundus photographs. With accurate segmentation and high numeric metrics, the lightweight U-Net method showed its reliable performance in automatically segmenting laser marks in fundus photographs, which could help the AI assist the diagnosis of DR in the severe stage.
