Abstract:We propose the use of Z index and SPI index of different time scales through an analysis on the monthly precipitation statistics at 11 weather stations for the period 1951~2008.We interpolate the drought index with an ordinary Kriging Method and focus on the spatial patterns of three major droughts that occurred in the Qiantang River basin.We find that the drought patterns derived with Z index and SPI index are nearly the same,but the results of Z index in the extreme drought conditions are closer to the actual values,while the SPI method is computationally more stable.In this paper,the Z index of different time scales for the first time is applied in the Qiantang River basin and it is compared with SPI index method.This study provides significant reference to water resources evaluation and drought monitoring in the humid regions of south China.

Abstract:Drought is a natural hazard disaster that can deeply affect environments, economies, and societies around the world. Therefore, accurate monitoring of patterns in drought is important. Precipitation is the key variable to define the drought index. However, the spare and uneven distribution of rain gauges limit the access of long-term and reliable in situ observations. Remote sensing techniques enrich the precipitation data at different temporal-spatial resolutions. In this study, the climate prediction center morphing (CMORPH) technique (CMORPH-CRT), the tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite precipitation analysis (TRMM 3B42V7), and the integrated multi-satellite retrievals for global precipitation measurement (IMERG V05) were evaluated and compared with in situ observations for the drought monitoring in the Xiang River Basin, a humid region in China. A widely-used drought index, the standardized precipitation index (SPI), was chosen to evaluate the drought monitoring utility. The atmospheric water deficit (AWD) was used for comparison of the drought estimation with SPI. The results were as follows: (1) IMERG V05 precipitation products showed the highest accuracy against grid-based precipitation, followed by CMORPH-CRT, which performed better than TRMM 3B42V7; (2) IMERG V05 showed the best performance in SPI-1 (one-month SPI) estimations compared with CMORPH-CRT and TRMM 3B42V7; (3) SPI-1 was more suitable for drought monitoring than AWD in the Xiang River Basin, because its high R-values and low root mean square error (RMSE) compared with the corresponding index based on in situ observations; (4) drought conditions in 2015 were apparently more severe than that in 2016 and 2017, with the driest area mainly distributed in the southwest part of the Xiang River Basin.

Abstract:The study of regional drought characteristics is vital for identifying drought patterns and offering scientifically informed guidance for drought warnings. This research focuses on the Sichuan Basin, where the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was calculated across various time scales using meteorological data from 1963 to 2022. Wavelet analysis was applied to examine the periodic fluctuations of the SPEI across different time scales. Drought events were identified using run-length theory and spatially visualized with ArcGIS 10.7 interpolation techniques to elucidate the temporal and spatial dynamics of drought occurrences. The findings are as follows: (1) Over nearly 60 years, the SPEI in the Sichuan Basin fluctuated between −1.5 and 1, with an insignificant annual downward trend but a significant downward trend in autumn (p < 0.05). (2) The SPEI displayed a primary cycle of 6 years in spring, autumn, and winter, while the summer cycle matched the annual SPEI cycle of 8 years. (3) Drought events were more frequent in the eastern part of the basin compared to the west. The area with high drought frequency shifted counterclockwise from east to north, northwest, west, and south with the changing seasons. (4) Drought duration was longer in the western and northern regions of the basin than in the east. Severe drought events were mainly concentrated in the Chengdu Plain and the Central Sichuan Hilly Region, although the drought intensity index was lowest in the Chengdu Plain and Chongqing in eastern Sichuan. The peak values of drought showed an insignificant decreasing trend, indicating a potential expansion in the extreme impacts of drought disasters in the study area.

Abstract:Drought is a widespread and destructive natural hazard and is projected to occur more frequently and intensely, with more severe impacts in a changing environment. In this study, we used the standardized precipitation index (SPI) at various time scales (i.e., 3, 6, and 12 months) to provide an overall view of drought conditions across Sichuan Province, southwestern China, from 1961 to 2016. Then, the relationship between the SPI and the soil moisture anomalies was analyzed. Furthermore, the causes of SPI drought from the perspective of large-scale atmospheric circulation were assessed in the study area. The results showed that most stations with decreasing trends were located in the eastern part of Sichuan Province, while most stations with increasing trends were located in the northwestern part, indicating that the eastern region presented a drying trend, while the northwestern part exhibited a wetting trend. The specific analysis focused on extreme drought indicated an increasing occurrence the probability of extreme drought events, which could induce a high potential drought risk in the study area. The SPI values had a strong relationship with the soil moisture anomalies, and the linear correlation coefficients decreased as the time scale increased. This result indicated that SPI3 (3-month SPI) could be regarded as a good predictor of soil moisture drought. The cross wavelet analysis revealed that the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) had statistically significant correlations with the SPIs in Sichuan Province. The results of this study are useful for assessing the change in local drought events, which will help reduce the losses caused by drought disasters in Sichuan Province.

Abstract:Drought has a direct impact on regional agricultural production, ecological environment, and economic development. The northwest region of China is an important agricultural production area, but it is also one of the most serious areas of water shortage due to drought and little rain. It is of great significance to make full use of agricultural resources to clarify the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the drought regime in Northwest China. Based on the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), this paper used the methods of Mann–Kendall non-parameter trend, mutation test, and Morlet wavelet analysis to explore the drought characteristics in Northwest China from 1961 to 2017. The results showed that the spatial distribution of SPEI on annual and seasonal scales differed slightly in different regions, but from northwest to southeast, the distribution was generally wetter to drier. The drought intensity (Sij) had a step-like distribution with a range of 1.14–1.98. Based on Sij analysis, the frequency of drought in Northwest China was moderate, followed by extreme drought, severe drought, and light drought. The inter-annual drought station proportion (Pj) ranged from 7.4% to 84.1%. A total of 25, 18, 7, and 5 years of pan-regional drought, regional drought, partial region drought, and local drought occurred, respectively, based on Pj analysis. Moreover, from the whole study period, the regional drought changes tended to cause humidification to different degrees. The results of Morlet wavelet analysis showed that there were multiple time scales of 33–52, 11–19, and 4–7 years of SPEI in the entire time domain, and dry and wet trends occurred. The results of the present research can provide a reference for the efficient utilization of water resources, drought monitoring and early warning, drought prevention, and drought relief in Northwest China.

Abstract:Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters in China and can cause serious environmental and socio-economic impacts. Based on monthly precipitation and temperature data from 571 meteorological stations, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was calculated on a 12-month scale (SPEI-12) from 1985 to 2018 in mainland China, and it was compared with the records of the Bulletin of Flood and Drought Disasters in China to verify its drought monitoring accuracy. Then, run theory was used to explore in depth the spatiotemporal distribution of drought characteristics and trends in various climatic sub-regions. The results showed that: (1) the comparison with the Bulletin of Flood and Drought Disasters in China indicated that the results of SPEI-12 monitoring drought had high accuracy and could identify drought events in mainland China. (2) About 70% of the regions in mainland China experienced droughts more than 50 times, and about 43% of the regions had drought durations of between 100 and 110 months. Nearly 11% of the regions had drought severities of more than 130, which were mainly located in the Northwest Desert (NWC), the southern part of Northeast China (NEC), and the western part of North China (NC). (3) In the past 34 years, the droughts in the Northwest Desert (NWC), the western part of Inner Mongolia (IM), and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) showed an aridity trend, while the droughts in South China (SC) and eastern Central and South China (CSC) presented a mitigation tendency. (4) Specifically, the droughts in South China (SC) were more influenced by precipitation, while those in the Northwest Desert (NWC) and Northeast China (NEC) were influenced by temperature and potential evapotranspiration, and the evolution of drought in North China (NC) and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) was mainly influenced by soil moisture. The study could provide scientific guidance and a reference for drought response and sustainable development in China.

Abstract:Global climate change, especially extreme drought events, presents a complicated challenge to humanity and Earth's system in the 21st century. As an extremely important carbon sink region in China, Southwest China has encountered frequent drought disasters in recent decades. It is critical to explore the frequency, duration, severity, and other associated characteristics of drought events as well as their spatial and temporal patterns in the region from a long-term perspective. In this study, we used the latest dataset from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) between 1901 and 2018 to extract all drought events by calculating the standardized anomaly of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Theil–Sen median trend analysis, the Mann–Kendall test, and the moving t-test were used to reveal the spatial trend and mutation point of drought severity. The results showed that (1) The standardized anomaly of the 3-month SPEI can accurately identify drought events in Southwest China. In total, 72 drought events occurred during this period, of which the consecutive drought in autumn, winter, and spring from 2009 to 2010 lasted the longest, having the most substantial severity and the most extensive damage range. (2) Drought events mainly started in spring and early summer and ended in autumn and winter. The distribution of drought was the most expansive and the drought severity was the most serious in September. (3) In terms of spatial pattern, Guangxi has the highest frequency of drought events, with some areas experiencing up to 100 events. The average duration of drought events ranged between 3.5 and 5.5 months, with most lasting for 4–5 months. The most severe drought areas are mainly concentrated in southern Sichuan and western Yunnan. Overall, the severity of drought events in the west were generally higher compared to that in the east. (4) Over the past 120 years, most of the region (82.46%) showed an increasing trend in drought severity, with a slope of up to −0.01. About 15.12% of the areas exhibited a significant drying trend (p < 0.05), particularly in southern Sichuan, eastern Guizhou, and northern and southern Yunnan. Such analyses can serve as a scientific foundation for developing drought prevention and mitigation measures as well as exploring how drought events affect the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems in Southwest China.

Abstract:The global climate is noticeably warming, and drought occurs frequently. Therefore, choosing a suitable index for drought monitoring is particularly important. The standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) are commonly used indicators in drought monitoring. The SPEI takes temperature into account, but the SPI does not. In the context of global warming, what are their differences and applicability in regional drought monitoring? In this study, after calculating the SPI and SPEI at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month timescales at 102 meteorological stations in Inner Mongolia from 1981 to 2018, we compared and analyzed the performances of the SPI and SPEI in drought monitoring from temporal and spatial variations, and the consistency and applicability of the SPI and SPEI were also discussed. The results showed that (1) with increasing timescale, the temporal variations in the SPI and SPEI were increasingly consistent, but there were still slight differences in the fluctuation value and continuity; (2) due to the difference in time series, the drought characteristics identified by the SPI and SPEI were quite different in space at various timescales, and with the increase in timescale, the spatial distributions of the drought trends in Inner Mongolia were basically consistent, except in Alxa; (3) at the shortest timescale, the difference between the SPI and SPEI was the largest, and the drought reflected by the SPI and SPEI may be consistent at long timescales; and (4) compared with typical drought events and vegetation indexes, the SPEI may be more suitable than the SPI for drought monitoring in Inner Mongolia. It should be noted that the adaptability of the SPI and SPEI may be different in different periods and regions, which remains to be analyzed in the future.

Abstract:The droughts normally lead to devastating and long-lasting damage to agriculture, economy, and ecosystem, especially in Tibet Autonomous Region (hereafter Tibet) where ecosystem is fragile as a result of its special topographic, geomorphic, and climatic conditions. Due to limited observational data in this region, how often and where these droughts occur is not well understood. In this study, droughts intensity and frequency, as well as dryness condition over Tibet were assessed by using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) with meteorological data from 38 stations during period of 1971–2014. Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) was used to compared with SPEI based on observed drought area of Tibet. Moreover, the dryness condition was explained by the contribution of meteorological factors according to the method of contribution rate. Results indicated that dryness conditions were aggravating during the period 1971–2014 across Tibet. Besides, drought intensity and frequency presented considerable decadal variation over the past 44 years with more frequent moderate and severe drought occurring in period of 1981–1990 and 2001–2014 compared with other periods. This highlighted that Tibet has gone through serious drying in the 1970s and since 2000. Factor analysis indicated that precipitation played the most important role in the variation of SPEI-12M. Both drought indexes could effectively detect drought events over Tibet from 2001 to 2014. Investigating and evaluating drought characteristic, causes and drought indexes effectiveness provide essential information for balanced water resource allocation and utilization and drought prevention.

Abstract:In recent decades multiple drought indices have been developed to quantify drought characteristics and to examine drought effects. However, little is known about regional applicability of drought indices for monitoring seasonal droughts over China. Here we investigated the capacity of three commonly used drought indices (SPI, SPEI and scPDSI) for showing water deficit as compared to independent precipitation, root zone soil moisture (SM) and terrestrial water storage (TWS) estimates collected from satellite observation and model simulation, by using trend and correlation analysis of the drought indices and hydrological variables in different seasons and climatic zones from 2000 to 2019. Our results suggested that areas with a significant increasing trend in precipitation (p < 0.05) occupied 13.4–20% of the study area from spring to autumn. The corresponding area for SM varied from 20 to 26%. A wetting trend was dominant in drylands despite TWS depletion. A drying trend appeared in southern North China Plain and southwest China, where severe droughts in 2009 and 2011 led to substantial declines in SM and TWS. SPI and SPEI worked better than scPDSI in characterizing meteorological drought at the seasonal timescale, given that the inter-annual variation of precipitation was in consistent with that of SPI and SPEI in approximately 70–80% of China. scPDSI was suitable for agricultural drought monitoring in different seasons, and agricultural drought was well characterized by SPI and SPEI only in the summer. SPI, SPEI and scPDSI both showed worse performances in quantifying drought trend and magnitude in drier regions and seasons characterized by a low aridity index. Thus, potential future expansion of global drylands calls for an integration of human impact into hydrological drought modeling.

Abstract:Changes in precipitation exerts a huge impact on human beings and it is of vital importance to study the regular pattern of meteorological and hydrological factors. In order to explore the changing patterns of precipitation in Sichuan province in west China during 1961–2008, several precipitation related indices were analysed by the Mann–Kendall test. For monthly precipitation, significant increasing trends are mainly found during January, March and June, while significant decreasing trends mostly are observed during July, September and October. Most of extreme precipitation indices are decreasing. Especially the annual total precipitation in wet days and maximum number of consecutive wet days show significant negative trends. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal variation of dryness/wetness has been assessed by Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and principal component analysis (PCA) on 24-month time scales. The results demonstrated noticeable spatial patterns with several sub-regions characterized by different trends: a remarkable dry tendency prevails in central and east Sichuan, while the other areas are dominated by a wet tendency.

Abstract:It is of great significance to study the characteristics and change trends of drought in Xinjiang to provide a basis for implementing local strategies. Based on monthly precipitation and temperature data from 95 meteorological stations in Xinjiang, from 1960 to 2018, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was calculated, and the characteristics and trends of drought in Xinjiang were analysed, in details. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation index, i.e., Regional Drought Severity (RDS), was proposed to analyse the effects of duration of the drought and the extent of the drought affected area. The results from our study suggested: (1) In consideration of global warming, droughts in Xinjiang have intensified during the past 59 years, and the frequency and range of droughts have increased significantly; (2) During the plant growing season, spring, summer, and autumn, a drying trend was observed, while, a wetting trend was identified for winter season; (3) The drought-prone months shifted from January and December to March-November in the 1970s, and April was identified as a month with the highest frequency of droughts; (4) The meteorological change occurred a period near 1997. It can be speculated that the intensified droughts can be triggered by the excessive temperature rise, through comparing the changes in SPEI and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), before and after the meteorological change; (5) After the meteorological change, the frequency of droughts with different levels had significantly increased, in addition, the drought-prone areas shifted from the north-west to the south-east. The results from this research provide important support for drought management in Xinjiang, also offer scientific basis for the formulation of relevant policies on agricultural and animal husbandry production.

Abstract:The environment of the Mu Us Sandy Land, northern Shaanxi, is fragile, so the temporal and spatial evolution of drought can provide a reference for ecological construction and agricultural production. Based on the daily precipitation data of five meteorological stations from 1967 to 2020, the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of drought in the Mu Us Sandy Land of northern Shaanxi were analyzed using the methods Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and run-length theory. The results show that 1) the smaller the time scale, the higher the sensitivity of the SPI to primary precipitation. 2) The annual, summer, autumn, and winter SPI showed an upward and a wetting trend, and the fastest wetting speed is observed in summer, while spring showed an increasing trend of drought. 3) In the past 54 years, the duration, degree, and intensity of drought events at SPI-3 and SPI-12 scales in the Mu Us Sandy Land of northern Shaanxi showed an insignificant decreasing trend, but the decreasing rate at the SPI-12 scale was faster than that at the SPI-3 scale. The serious periods of drought are November 2018 to May 2019 and April 1999 to July 2021. 4) The duration of drought events at two timescales in each region showed a decreasing trend. The longest durations of drought were in Yulin and Jingbian; Shenmu and Dingbian are the regions with the fastest reduction rate of drought degree at the two scales. Hengshan shows rapid reduction of drought intensity at the two scales and also the region with large average drought intensity. These results are helpful in understanding and describing drought events for drought risk management under the condition of global warming.

Abstract:This study has investigated the spatio-temporal changes of droughts from 1961 to 2005 in the Wei River Basin. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was employed to describe the droughts. The trends of SPI value at all the meteorological stations were calculated by using the modified Mann-Kendall (MMK) trend test method, indicating that the western basin has a significantly wet trend, whilst the eastern basin including the Guanzhong Plain has a trend towards drought . Since the historical droughts records were too short to fully investigate drought properties in this basin, a practical nonparametric method was proposed to calculate the joint probability distribution of drought properties, which overcomes the shortcomings of the univariate and parametric frequency analysis. The frequency analysis of drought in the Wei River Basin indicates that the Guanzhong Plain and the surrounding areas of Huanxian meteorological station have a high drought risks, whilst the western and northern basin except the surrounding areas of Huanxian station has a relatively low drought risk.

Abstract:Understanding variations in precipitation from a variety of aspects is important for the utilization of water resources. Based on daily precipitation records at 98 meteorological stations in Sichuan province, southwestern China, the spatial and temporal changes in wet/dry spells were investigated by using 14 precipitation indices. The Mann–Kendall trend test is used to detect trends in the index series. Results suggest that the decrease of precipitation in central and eastern Sichuan was significant in terms of decreasing tendencies of wet spell indices. However, the decreasing trend of dry spell indices suggested an increase in precipitation in western Sichuan province. A higher risk of droughts can be expected in autumn and wet spell indices in winter and spring are increasing, implying obvious seasonality and seasonal shifts of change in precipitation within this province. Wet/dry spells with short duration were accounted for a large proportion of spells in Sichuan. The occurrence and fractional contribution of short-duration wet spells were increasing. Abstract:Weibei Loess Plateau is an important grain production base of Shaanxi Province. In this study, in order to promote the ability for coping with drought, daily precipitation data from 1986 to2015 of this region were selected, and the standardized precipitation index (SPI) was calculated as an indicator to quantitatively analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of drought in this area. Results showed that: (1) In the recent 30 years, SPI varied with the precipitation except some particular months. That is because the sensitivity of SPI to precipitation differed in different time scales. (2) Dividing the SPI into different time scales, can better reflect the development status and trend of drought and flooding. The short time scale (1 month) was used to reflect the drought variation monthly, while the medial scale (3 months) can be used to reflect the drought variation by season. In addition, the longtime scale (12 months) was observed to reflect the moisture hysteresis effect. Through the analysis of SPI in multiple time scales, the Weibei Loess Plateau presented a tendency of being wet, and the randomness of SPI declined with the increase of time scales, whereas the duration strengthened. Corresponded to the climate change, the drought frequency declined. (3) It was tested to be drought in 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998 and 2001, in this area. Meanwhile, according to the SPI, the spring and summer are much more prone to be drought than the autumn and winter, which can be concluded to be higher frequency during dry seasons. (4) The drought condition was relatively consistent within the whole Weibei Loess Plateau. The results for Weibei Loess Plateau will provide a scientific basis for agricultural drought management and decision-making.
Multi-scale assessments of droughts: A case study in Xinjiang, China

Abstract:Understanding the multi-scale variation of drought is essentially important in drought assessment. Now, a comprehensive assessment is still lacking on the meteorological, ecological and hydrological drought perspectives. In order to better investigate multi-scale droughts, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of their long-term variation based on the two drought indices and observation data in Xinjiang, China, from 1961 to 2015. The two indices are the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The results show that the SPI and SPEI are highly consistent for most stations and time scales in Xinjiang. Based on multi-scale and considered evaporative demand, the SPEI from 1961 to 2015 showed a wetting trend followed by a drying trend (as of 1997), giving an overall slight drying trend (-0.0122±0.0043 per year) for the 54-year period. We assessed the sensitivity of the two drought indices to precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration (PET) and found that the SPEI shows different sensitivity to P and PET. In arid regions characterized by high PET, drought severity is mostly determined by changes in PET. The intensified warming and diminished precipitation in Xinjiang that have been observed over the past two decades have resulted in SPEI-drought severity. These changes also amplify the risk of ecological drought. However, the hydrological drought was highly complex and not entirely comparable to the SPEI and SPI droughts. Hydrological records indicate that runoff in most rivers in the Tianshan Mountains has increased, whereas runoff in the Kunlun Mountains is either stable or has slightly decreased over the past 20years. A moderately high and statistically significant correlation between the runoff anomaly and the SPEI and SPI was revealed for four major rivers in the region. This implies that the accelerated river runoff in Xinjiang is a function of both precipitation and increasing glacier melt.

Abstract:Understanding the spatial and temporal variation of drought is essentially important in drought assessment. In most previous studies, drought event is usually identified in space and time separately, ignoring the nature of the dynamic processes. In order to better understand how drought changes have taken place in China during the past half-century, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of their spatio-temporal variation based on multiple drought indices from a climatic perspective. A 3-dimensional clustering method is developed to identify drought events in China from 1961 to 2012 based on the 0.25 degrees gridded indices of SPI3 (3 months Standardized Precipitation Index), RDI3 (3 months Reconnaissance Drought Index) and SPEI3 (3 months Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index). Drought events are further characterized by five parameters: duration, affected area, severity, intensity, and centroid. Remotely sensed soil moisture data were used to validate the rationality of identified drought events. The results show that the two most severe drought events in the past half century which occurred in the periods 1962-1963 and 2010-2011 swept more than half of the non-arid regions in China. Large magnitude droughts were usually centered in the region from North China Plain to the downstream of Yangtze River. The western part of North China Plain, Loess Plateau, Sichuan Basin and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau had a significant drying trend, which is mainly caused by the significant decrease of precipitation. The three drought indices have almost the same performance in the humid regions, while SPI and RDI were found to be more appropriate than SPEI in the arid regions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
