Abstract:Water plays a notable role in the ecology of most terrestrial organisms due to the risks associated with water loss. Specifically, water loss in terrestrial animals happens through evaporation across respiratory tissues or epidermis. Amphibians are ideal systems for studying how abiotic factors impact water loss since their bodies often respond quickly to environmental changes. While the effect of temperature on water loss is well known across many taxa, we are still learning how temperature in combination with humidity or water availability affects water loss. Here, we tested how standing water sources (availability) and temperature (26 and 36°C) together affect water loss in anuran amphibians using a Bayesian framework. We also present a conceptual model for considering how water availability and temperature may interact, resulting in body mass changes. After accounting for phylogenetic and time autocorrelation, we determined how different variables (water loss and uptake rates, temperature, and body size) affect body mass in three species of tropical frogs (Rhinella marina, Phyllobates terribilis, and Xenopus tropicalis). We found that all variables impacted body mass changes with greater similarities between P. terribilis and X. tropicalis, but only temperature showed a notable effect in P. terribilis. Furthermore, we describe how the behavior of P. terribilis might affect its water budget. This study shows how organisms might manage water budgets across different environments and is important for developing our models of evaporative water loss and species distributions.

Abstract:Body and limb size are associated with many aspects of the biology of animals. Geographic variation in morphological traits has often been investigated through ecogeographical rules. Bergmann's rule posits an inverse relationship between body size and temperature in homeotherms, while Allen's rule posits that endothermic animals inhabiting colder climates have relatively shorter protruding parts (e.g., limbs) in comparison to populations from warmer climates. However, the applicability and validity of these rules in poikilotherms are currently contentious. In this study, we aimed to test predictions of Bergmann's and Allen's rules in populations of the Neotropical frog Boana platanera. We analysed 142 adult male museum specimens from 17 localities along a mountain range in western Venezuela. We obtained six external morphological measurements and assessed the correlation of body size and limb size with temperature data for each locality. Our results were contrary to the expectations but consistent with previous studies. All this together indicates that exceptions to the Bergmann's and Allen's rules are frequent and idiosyncratic in anurans. We discuss alternative hypotheses that could explain geographic variation of body and limb size in future studies.

Sex‐specific Shifts in Morphology and Diet in a Frog after 50 Years of Anthropogenic Habitat Fragmentation

Abstract:Aim Phenotypic shifts are commonly observed when animals face insular habitat change and may reflect ongoing stresses on individuals. However, the generality and the driving processes of this 'island rule' remain equivocal, notably in amphibians. Here, we investigate both morphological and dietary shifts in a frog using a mosaic of human-created islands to assess the potential operating mechanisms underlying these phenotypic responses. Location Thousand Island Lake, China. Taxon The Chinese piebald odorous frog, Odorrana schmackeri. Methods We compared body size between insular and mainland populations and between sexes. We examined the potential underlying mechanisms regarding body size shifts using structural equation modelling (SEM). Finally, we analysed changes in diet composition and compared intersexual diet overlap between islands and mainland sites. Results We found insular dwarfism in female but not male frogs. Meanwhile, insular females also had smaller gape widths than mainland females after accounting for snout-vent lengths (SVLs). According to SEMs, resource availability had a direct positive effect on body size. Finally, diet composition differed between the island and mainland populations but only in females. Males and females on islands exhibited greater overlaps in the diet. Main conclusions In contrast with most studies in amphibians, we found insular dwarfism rather than gigantism in females. The smaller gape width after accounting for SVL in insular females suggests potential changes in prey utilization or food availability on these human-created islands. This notion is further supported by the differentiation of diet composition between island and mainland females. The higher diet overlap between sexes implies stronger intersexual competition for food resources after habitat fragmentation. Overall, we found rapid shifts in morphology and diet in frogs, which might result from habitat fragmentation in only 50 years and underscore the need to consider intersexual differences when assessing responses of species to anthropogenic disturbances.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects > 180 million people worldwide. It is persistent in Thai communities in spite of much effort in prevention and control. This study examined the knowledge capacity of villagers in the Klongmai community of Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, regarding diabetes by way of action research. A health status assessment and a survey of the community were carried out and used as the basis for designing an educational video on diabetes that is accessible regardless of age and educational background. Evaluations of the pre- and poststudy questionnaires were carried out using statistical analysis. The results indicated that the devised educational materials were effective in encouraging the community's self-awareness and perception of diabetes at the significance level of 0.05. Most importantly, the participants demonstrated proficiency in adapting the knowledge gained from the workshop to their own lifestyle.

Abstract:Ecological studies testing the preponderance of environmental filters on ontogeny to explain the variation in tadpole morphology are scarce for Neotropical anurans. We used tadpoles of the stone frog Limnomedusa macroglossa (Alsodidae): (1) to assess the variation in body and tail shape; (2) to examine the effect of streamlet depth and allometry on tadpole shape, and (3) to re-describe and compare the tadpole external morphology with closely related species. We obtained the body shape and size from 150 tadpoles. The re-description was based on 57 qualitative and 24 quantitative characters, from 19 tadpoles between stages 30 and 37 and 31 to 37, respectively. Allometry was the major factor influencing the lateral view of body shape: smaller tadpoles had round bodies and eyes and nostrils positioned more laterally in comparison with larger ones. Thus, the power of ontogenetic variations reported here makes the tadpole developmental “climax” period a questionable concept that deserves additional attention. The depth gradient of streamlets also affected the shape: in shallower environments, the tadpoles presented a decrease in height of the body, fins and tail muscles, and an increase in body width. These results may indicate adaptations allowing better swimming performance in lotic environments with intense water flow. The external morphological characterization of L. macroglossa presented here differed from that previously reported, mainly due to coloration, body shape, nostril, anal tube, tail, shape and position of nostrils and snout. Additionally, we presented unknown traits for this species, making comparisons with closely related species within the Alsodidae family.

Abstract:Reproductive patterns observed in organisms are direct outcomes of the interaction among parameters such as phylogeny, body size, and environmental characteristics. However, the action of these parameters is rarely observed in an integrated perspective in the literature. Here, we collected 109 specimens of two congeneric species of treefrogs living in the same microhabitat (bromeligenous species of genus Ololygon ) to compare the reproductive patterns of the two species, evaluating the effect of different parameters on the reproductive ecology of the organisms. Our results show that morphometric measurements between females of the two species were not significantly different, indicating similar body sizes. The species exhibited different degrees of sexual dimorphism, and interspecifically, females showed significant differences in breeding traits, with the species O. perpusilla demonstrating higher reproductive effort, characterized by increased ovarian mass and increased average egg size compared to O. littorea . We observed that differences in reproductive effort were strongly associated with egg size, which drove higher reproductive investment in O. perpusilla females. We conclude that although the species share many traits commonly related to the degree of reproductive investment, other drivers, not yet completely understood, may influence the reproductive aspects of organisms, generating unexpected patterns.

Abstract:Understanding how environmental stress modifies life-history traits of vertebrates is highly important for their conservation and management. Amphibians, in particular, have experienced rapid declines in abundance due to their relatively low mobility and strict physiological constraints. Therefore, it is important to understand how amphibians have evolved to cope with environmental stress, and to identify the relevant life-history traits that mediate these dynamics. In this study, we quantified the variation of life-history traits (i.e., body size and age) across the distributional range for a mountain frog species, Feirana quadranus, and identified potential impacts of environmental stress on these traits. Based on the similarity of environmental variables describing bioclimatic and ultraviolet-B radiation conditions from a hierarchical cluster analysis, all populations were assigned to three distinct groups: low, intermediate and high environmental harshness regimes. We found no significant difference in age structure among environmental regimes, with 68% of individuals being between four and six years old. The average age of individuals did not differ among regimes or between sexes, but snout-vent length (SVL) and hind limb length differed significantly among both. When environmental stress was represented along the principle component axes, we found a significant correlation between environmental stress and hind limb length, but not for age or SVL. Our results help us understand potential impacts of environmental stress on life-history variation in F. quadranus covering its whole distribution range. Specifically, our findings highlight the adaptive potential of amphibians to changing environmental conditions via life-history variation as a function of environmental stress.

Abstract:In this ecomorphological study, we investigate how the ventral pectoral girdle morphology of anurans correlates with their locomotor modes, habitat preferences, and phylogenetic relationships. We analysed 18 morphometric variables of the pectoral girdle's ventral region across 19 anuran species, encompassing diverse locomotion modes (jumping, hopping, walking, and swimming) and habitats (arboreal, bushy, terrestrial, and aquatic). Our findings, predominantly explained by the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck model, reveal evolutionary adaptations in pectoral girdle morphology driven by habitat‐specific demands. Notably, bushy and walker‐jumper species exhibit large clavicles, coracoids, and sternums, along with a broad medial pectoral girdle and bigger epicoracoid. Terrestrial and arboreal‐ jumpers have a larger omosternum area compared to predominantly swimming species. Arboreal walkers show shorter epicoracoid horns and narrower coracoids. Interestingly, bushy and terrestrial species have a higher proportion of bone tissue in their pectoral girdles. This indicates a potential adaptation to support the additional to adaptation to participate in shock absorption. The patterns recovered underscore the intricate relationship between anatomical evolution and environmental adaptation in anurans.

Abstract:Terrestrial breeding is a derived condition in frogs, with multiple transitions from an aquatic ancestor. Shifts in reproductive mode often involve changes in habitat use, and these are typically associated with diversification in body plans, with repeated transitions imposing similar selective pressures. We examine the diversification of reproductive modes, male and female body sizes, and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in the Neotropical frog genera Cycloramphus and Zachaenus, both endemic to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. Species in this clade either breed in rocky streams (saxicolous) or in terrestrial environments, allowing us to investigate reproductive habitat shifts. We constructed a multilocus molecular phylogeny and inferred evolutionary histories of reproductive habitats, body sizes, and SSD. The common ancestor was small, saxicolous, and had low SSD. Terrestrial breeding evolved independently three times and we found a significant association between reproductive habitat and SSD, with shifts to terrestrial breeding evolving in correlation with decreases in male body size, but not female body size. Terrestrial breeding increases the availability of breeding sites and results in concealment of amplexus, egg-laying, and parental care, therefore reducing male-male competition at all stages of reproduction. We conclude that correlated evolution of terrestrial reproduction and small males is due to release from intense male-male competition that is typical of exposed saxicolous breeding.

Abstract:Abstract Female fecundity is an important selective force leading to female-biased sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in frogs. Because anurans exhibit diverse reproductive modes, we investigated whether variation in SSD and fecundity are related with oviposition site. We asked whether arboreal breeding species show pronounced female-biased SSD and if, paradoxically, females have lower fecundity because of the costs of carrying oocytes and amplectant males. Conversely, we tested whether species that deposit eggs in concealed sites show less pronounced SSD, because females do not carry males and space limitation may reduce female size and fecundity. Our results showed that, in general, males were approximately 20% smaller than females. However, for species with hidden oviposition sites, males and females exhibited more similar body sizes and arboreal hylids showed more pronounced female-biased SSD. Overall, fecundity was higher in aquatic breeders, as expected, but in hylids, fecundity was smaller in arboreal breeders, which suggests that arboreality may impose restrictions on fecundity. By analysing SSD in a broader and more specific lineage (Hylidae), we found that reproductive microhabitat may also influence female size and fecundity, playing an important role in the evolution of SSD in frogs at different evolutionary scales.

Abstract:Abstract Background Heterochrony, change in the rate or timing of development, is thought to be one of the main drivers of morphological evolution, and allometry, trait scaling patterns imposed by size, is traditionally thought to represent an evolutionary constraint. However, recent studies suggest that the ontogenetic allometric trajectories describing how organisms change as they grow may be labile and adaptive. Here we investigated the role of postnatal ontogenetic development in the morphological diversification of Paleoanguimorpha, the monitor lizards and allies, a clade with extreme body size disparity. We obtained linear and geometric morphometric data for more than 1,600 specimens belonging to three families and 60 species, representing ~ 72% of extant paleoanguimorph diversity. We used these data to undertake one of the largest comparative studies of ontogenetic allometry to date. Results Heterochrony is likely dictating morphological divergence at shallow evolutionary scales, while changes in the magnitude and direction of ontogenetic change are found mainly between major clades. Some patterns of ontogenetic variation and morphological disparity appear to reflect ontogenetic transitions in habitat use. Generally, juveniles are more similar to each other than adults, possibly because species that differ in ecology as adults are arboreal as juveniles. The magnitude of ontogenetic change follows evolutionary models where variation is constrained around an optimal value. Conversely, the direction of ontogenetic change may follow models with different adaptive optima per habitat use category or models where interspecific interactions influence its evolution. Finally, we found that the evolutionary rates of the ontogenetic allometric trajectories are phylogenetically variable. Conclusions The attributes of ontogenetic allometric trajectories and their evolutionary rates are phylogenetically heterogeneous in Paleoanguimorpha. Both allometric constraints and ecological factors have shaped ontogeny in the group. Our study highlights the evolutionary lability and adaptability of postnatal ontogeny, and teases apart how different evolutionary shifts in ontogeny contribute to the generation of morphological diversity at different evolutionary scales.

Abstract:Morphology plays a crucial role in understanding the intricacies of biological forms. Traditional morphometric methods, focusing on one- or two-dimensional geometric levels, often fall short of accurately capturing the three-dimensional (3D) structure of organisms. The advent of 3D scanning techniques has revolutionized the study of organismal morphology, enabling comprehensive and accurate measurements. This study employs a 3D structured light scanning system to analyze the morphological variations in the Chinese toad (Bufo gargarizans Cantor, 1842) along the Yellow River Basin. The 3D digital model obtained from the scan was used to calculate various morphological parameters including body surface area, volume, fractal dimensions, and limb size. The research explores geographic variability patterns and identifies environmental drivers affecting the 3D phenotypic variation of B. gargarizans. Results reveal a bimodal pattern of variation in the toad population, with higher elevations exhibiting smaller body sizes, greater appendage proportions, and more complex body structures. Linear regression analyses highlight the influence of elevation and annual mean temperature on the morphological variation of B. gargarizans, with elevation playing a significant role. This study underscores the significance of 3D morphometric analysis in unraveling the intricacies of organismal morphology and understanding the adaptive strategies of species in diverse environments.

Larval Body Shape and Eye Size Variation in Japanese Toads (Anura: Bufonidae: Bufo): An Ecological Implication for Lentic and Lotic Habitats

Abstract:Variation in morphological traits of anurans has evolved due to the pressures imposed by inhabiting different environments. The Japanese stream toad, Bufo torrenticola, breeds in running water, such as mountain streams, where the larvae grow. This lotic-breeding habit of B. torrenticola was suggested to have evolved from a lentic-breeding ancestor. Evolutionary shift of breeding habit from lentic- to lotic-breeding caused larval morphological changes to adapt to the stream habitat. However, morphological adaptation associated with the larval habitat of these three types of Japanese toads has not been explored well. In this study, we applied geometric morphometrics and distance measurements to compare body and eye characters among the tadpoles of three Japanese toads. The results showed that B. torrenticola has more dorsally and posteriorly positioned eyes, and a longer and wider rostrum because of having a larger mouth and more-developed oral muscles than its close relatives. These characters might be related to lotic lifestyle. Meanwhile, tadpoles of B. torrenticola and its sister taxon B. japonicus japonicus showed similar eye growth pattern, supporting their close phylogenetic relationship. Some of the lotic-adapted characters have also been reported in other lotic tadpoles, which is indicative of convergent evolution among stream-adapted tadpoles.
Ecological constraints and trait conservatism drive functional and phylogenetic structure of amphibian larvae communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Abstract:In coastal plains of Atlantic forest, tadpole communities show that ponds with lower environmental complexity or heterogeneity show more closely related species than expected from random samples, generating an emergent clustering structure. Ecologists strive to untangle the complex interplay of current and historical factors, along with evolutionary history of species, to understand communities' structure. However, this can be achieved by integrating different approaches to expanding our knowledge about the underlying processes connecting assemble rules of ecological communities. In order to better understand how ecological and/or evolutionary factors may affect the structure of communities, we assessed the phylogenetic and functional structure of 33 tadpole communities in the Atlantic Forest Southeastern Brazil and tested whether phylogenetic conservatism drives tadpole traits. We identified 19 communities which were significantly phylogenetic clustered and 10 which were significantly functional clustered. Trait diversity was skewed towards the root, indicating phylogenetic trait conservatism as an important driver of the structure of tadpole communities. The best explanatory model of the phylogenetic diversity included, in order of importance, presence of potential fish predators, water conductivity, external diversity of vegetation structure, canopy cover, internal diversity of vegetation structure and dissolved oxygen. Most variables were negatively correlated with phylogenetic diversity, but the presence of potential fish predators was positively correlated. For functional structure, external diversity of vegetation structure, canopy cover, area, dissolved oxygen and presence of potential fish predators were selected as the best explanatory model (presented in order of importance). Furthermore, of the 10 functionally structured communities, eight were also phylogenetically structured. In this sense, environmental variables could be filtering tadpole lineages interacting with phylogenetically conserved species traits, thus driving anura tadpole species' occurrence on communities. Our study provides evidence that anuran communities structure results from interacting ecological and evolutionary processes.

Body Size Variation And Sexual Dimorphism In Eleven Species Of Venezuelan Anurans

Abstract:This study investigates intra and interspecific variation in snout vent length (SVL) and abdominal width (AW) across 11 anuran species in Venezuela, revealing significant patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in seven species. Females exhibited larger SVL than males in most species (e.g., Atelopus cruciger, Leptodactylus fuscus, and Phyllomedusa trinitatis), with mean SVL differences ranging from 4 to 15 mm (p < 0.05). This study provides the first reference AW values for these species, contributing novel data for morphometric studies. Four species (Boana punctata, Leptodactylus fuscus, Rhinella marina, and Scinax rostratus) showed no significant differences in SVL or AW (p > 0.05), indicating limited SSD or monomorphism. Statistical analyses highlighted geographic variation in SVL, with female-biased SSD more pronounced in arboreal species and male-biased SSD associated with territorial, burrow-digging behaviors in terrestrial species (p < 0.05). These findings support Rensch rule, where SSD scales with body size: SSD decreases with increasing female size and increases with male-biased size. In L. fuscus, for instance, SVL values (males: 54.5 mm; females: 61.56 mm) exceeded reported ranges but lacked statistical significance (p = 0.595), highlighting substantial geographic and ecological influences. Directional asymmetry was evident in arboreal species, linked to their ecological adaptations for locomotion. Conversely, terrestrial species displayed larger size variation associated with competition and reproductive strategies. Statistical tests demonstrated the role of ecological traits, activity patterns, and reproductive pressures in shaping SSD (e.g., p < 0.01 for differences in tree vs. ground-dwelling species). This study underscores the complexity of SSD, influenced by ecological, behavioral, and geographic factors. Morphometric indices validated here offer practical tools for future studies, requiring careful application across species, populations, and developmental stages. The results emphasize the ecological and evolutionary importance of body size variation and provide critical data for conservation efforts in Venezuelan anurans.

This variation might be the response to different environmental conditions, as well as natural and sexual selection, and can result in differences in behavior and reproductive strategies among populations. Here, we use the dyeing poison frog ( Dendrobates tinctorius ) as a model to investigate how interpopulation variation in body size and sexual size dimorphism affects reproductive strategies. As body size increased, sexual size dimorphism also increased, i.e., females were larger than males, and more so in populations with overall larger frogs. This indicates that there is a stronger selection for body size in females than in males, likely as a response to divergent reproductive investment between the sexes. Females from larger-bodied populations produced larger clutches, but the overall number of froglets produced per clutch did not differ among populations. We discuss potential causes and mechanisms that might be responsible for the observed divergence in body size, sexual size dimorphism, and reproductive strategies among populations that likely represent local adaptations. Our findings demonstrate the importance of cross-population studies, cautioning against drawing general conclusions about a species' ecology without accounting for intraspecific variation.

Abstract:Sexual dimorphism (SD) is a common feature of animals, and selection for sexually dimorphic traits may affect both functional morphological traits and organismal performance. Trait evolution through natural selection can also vary across environments. However, whether the evolution of organismal performance is distinct between the sexes is rarely tested in a phylogenetic comparative context. Anurans commonly exhibit sexual size dimorphism, which may affect jumping performance given the effects of body size on locomotion. They also live in a wide variety of microhabitats. Yet the relationships among dimorphism, performance, and ecology remain underexamined in anurans. Here, we explore relationships between microhabitat use, body size, and jumping performance in males and females to determine the drivers of dimorphic patterns in jumping performance. Using methods for predicting jumping performance through anatomical measurements, we describe how fecundity selection and natural selection associated with body size and microhabitat have likely shaped female jumping performance. We found that the magnitude of sexual size dimorphism (where females are about 14% larger than males) was much lower than dimorphism in muscle volume, where females had 42% more muscle than males (after accounting for body size). Despite these sometimes-large averages, phylogenetic t-tests failed to show the statistical significance of SD for any variable, indicating sexually dimorphic species tend to be closely related. While SD of jumping performance did not vary among microhabitats, we found female jumping velocity and energy differed across microhabitats. Overall, our findings indicate that differences in sex-specific reproductive roles, size, jumping-related morphology, and performance are all important determinants in how selection has led to the incredible ecophenotypic diversity of anurans.

Abstract:This study highlights that changes in dispersal morphology and thermal tolerance play a crucial role in the range expansion of a native frog and that building separate species distribution models (SDMs) at the population‐level according to colonization history outperforms a species‐level SDM. Species range shifts due to climate alterations have been increasingly well‐documented. Although amphibians are one of the most sensitive groups of animals to environmental perturbations due to climate change, almost no studies have offered evidence of poleward distribution shifts in this taxon in response to climate warming. Range shifts would be facilitated by variation in traits associated with the ability of species to persist and/or shift their range in the face of climate change, but the extent and consequences of intraspecific variation in these traits is unclear. We studied the role of intraspecific variation in the ongoing range shift of green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea) in response to climate change. We explored factors that are often associated with range shifts to test the hypothesis that there are differences in these traits between recently range‐expanded and nearby historical populations. We then tested the consequences of intraspecific variation for modelling climate‐induced range shifts by comparing species distribution models (SDMs) that used as input either data from the entire species range or separate inputs from 'subpopulations' corresponding to the historical range or the recently expanded range. We expected that building a separate SDM for each population would more accurately characterize the species range if historical and expanded populations differed in traits related to their response to climate. We found that critical thermal minimum decreased and thermal breadth increased with latitude, but the effect of latitude was significantly stronger for expanded populations compared to historical populations. Additionally, we found that individuals from expanded populations had longer leg lengths when compared to their historical counterparts. Finally, we found higher model accuracy for one of the population‐level SDMs than the species‐level SDM. Our results suggest that thermal tolerance and dispersal morphologies are associated with amphibian distributional shifts as these characteristics appear to facilitate rapid range expansion of a native anuran. Additionally, our modelling results emphasize that SDM accuracy could be improved by dividing a species range to consider potential differences in traits associated with climate responses. Future research should identify the mechanisms underlying intraspecific variation along climate gradients to continue improving SDM prediction of range shifts under climate change.
