Abstract:Generally, solvents used to synthesize perovskite NCs are toxic, which leads to waste liquid pollution and environmental degradation. Herein, we developed a novel environmentally friendly polar solvent method to synthesize CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs). Over 65% photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQYs) for NCs could be maintained over 45-850 h of storage time, and a maximum was 78% at 750 h. Such amazing stability in polar solvents is dominated by a ripening process, which heals surface defects. Additionally, their solid films also exhibited good moisture stability. Abstract:Colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX 3 PNCs) are prone to instability due to low lattice energy and dynamic ionic bonding between the PNC core and the inorganic–organic interface. To address this issue, we propose a stapled ligand, perfluoroglutaric acid (PFGA), that can effectively passivate the surface of CsPbBr 3 PNCs through atomic-scale double chelating coordination with Pb 2+ between neighboring [PbBr 6 ] 4 − unit cells. Theoretical calculations show that this precise double chelating on the surface of CsPbBr 3 PNCs can achieve a much stronger bonding energy (−5.19 eV) compared to single-chelated perfluoroadipic acid (−1.42 eV) or other similar ligands with trivial changes in chain length. The PFGA enables CsPbBr 3 PNCs to achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 85% with a single acid as a capping agent, as well as outstanding dispersion in a variety of polar solvents. Furthermore, the PFGA-capped CsPbBr 3 PNCs exhibit excellent purification stability after five rounds of vigorous washing and long-term stability after more than six months of storage within ethanol, which has been successfully applied for chloride sensing in different circumstances. Our findings provide insight into the design of surface engineering strategies to produce highly emissive and stable PNCs and broaden the sensing field of PNCs in polar media.

Abstract:The extremely poor stability of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) in polar solvent is a critical unsolved problem and seriously hinder their practical application scenarios. Herein, a surface chemistry engineering strategy is proposed for synthesizing robust CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) NCs in non-toxic ethanol-based solvent by building an extensive inter-ligand H-bond network on perovskite lattice. The obtained unsealed CsPbX3 NCs show unprecedented year-long stability in ethanol. Notably, a water (∼6–50%, v/v) post-treatment can obviously decrease surface defects of NCs, thus yielding a significant enhancement in their emission efficiency (increased from 9.6% to 83.4% for CsPbBr3 NCs in ethanol). We further translated the obtained CsPbBr3 NCs to fluorescent sensor and visible-light-driven photocatalysts, achieving ultra-high sensitivity (limit of detection is 11 nM) and high photocatalytic efficiency (>99% removal within 10 min). Overall, the low-cost, easy-to-process, highly efficient and ethanol/water tolerant perovskites NCs indicate their promising application prospect in multifunctional photoelectric devices.

Abstract:The colloidal all-inorganic CsPbX3(X=I, Br, Cl) perovskite nanocrystals(NCs) with unique optical properties have attracted considerable attention in the field of semiconductor nanocrystals, but their application is hindered by stability issues caused by surface defects and environmental factors. Usually with inert layer encapsulation, the stability of CsPbX3 NCs can be significantly enhanced. However, due to the loss of highly dynamic oleic acid/oleylamine ligands, it is usually accompanied by a decrease in the photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY). Herein, we report a facile method for preparing CsPbBr3 NCs based green phosphors with high stability and bright emission. With modification of colloidal CsPbBr3 NCs by di-dodecyldimethylammonium bromide and sequent encapsulation in the as-synthesized mesoporous MOF-5, the green emitting phosphors with enhanced stability and a PLQY of 77% were obtained. The phosphors exhibit enhanced resistance against ambient oxygen, UV light, heat treatment and water. These excellent properties show the potential value of our prepared NCs as stable phosphors in light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Practical applications of CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) are limited by their poor stability. The formation of a heterojunction between CsPbX3 NCs and oxides is an effective means to protect perovskite from polar solvents and other external factors. Significantly improving the stability and photocatalytic properties of the core/shell perovskite is very important for its application in photoelectric and photocatalytic technology. Here, we report the synthesis of asymmetrical CsPbBr3/TiO2 core–shell heterostructure NCs at the single-particle level by hot-injection liquid-phase synthesis and sol–gel method, where each CsPbBr3 NCs is partially covered by titanium dioxide. We tested not only the optical properties of the material but also the electrochemical impedance and photocurrent density of the material in sodium sulfate solution. It is shown that the type II arrangement is generated at the heterogeneous interface, which greatly facilitates the separation of electron–hole pairs and increases the carrier transport efficiency. Compared with CsPbBr3 NCs, CsPbBr3/TiO2 has higher photocatalytic efficiency. More crucially, due to the protection of the titanium dioxide shell, the product has higher long-term stability in humid air compared with bare CsPbBr3 NCs. The asymmetrical core–shell heterostructure prepared in this study not only improves the stability of CsPbX3 NCs but also provides some ideas for optoelectronic device applications and TiO2-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been widely applied in optoelectronic devices owing to their excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties. However, poor stability upon exposure to water, UV light or heat strongly limits their practical application. Herein, CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites with exceptional stability against water, UV light, and heat are synthesized by ultrasonic processing the precursors of lead-based MOF (Pb-MOF), oleylammonium bromide (OAmBr) and cesium oleate (Cs-OA) solutions at room temperature. Pb-MOF can not only provide the lead source for the in situ growth of CsPbBr3 NCs, but also the protective layer of perovskites NCs. The formed CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites show a considerable PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 67.8%, and can maintain 90% of the initial PL intensity when immersed in water for 2 months. In addition, the outstanding PL stability against UV light and heat is demonstrated with CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized by the conventional method as a comparison. Finally, a green (light-emitting diode) LED is fabricated using green-emitting CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites and exhibits excellent stability without packaging when immersed in water for 30 days. This study provides a practical approach to improve the stability in aqueous phase, which may pave the way for future applications for various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The instability of the cesium lead halide perovskite (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) upon exposure to humidity or heat strongly hinders their applications in optoelectronic devices. In this work, an in situ adsorption strategy is adopted to directly grow uniform CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) on flower-like TiO2 microspheres to achieve a hybrid structure. Benefiting from the isolation effect of flower-like structure, the as-synthesized TiO2–CsPbBr3 composites exhibit excellent water stability when soaked in water for 35 days and retain 62.7% of the initial photoluminescence (PL) emission intensity. CsPbBr3 NCs also present enhanced thermal stability under the protection of TiO2 matrix. It is intriguing that the TiO2-CsPbX3 composites with blue, green and red emissions are fabricated successfully by this method with excellent moisture and thermal stability, which provides a feasible solution for the effective application of CsPbX3 NCs in light emitting diode (LED) devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have high quantum efficiency, adjustable optical band gap and high carrier migration efficiency which has a good application prospect in LED, HD flexible display, solar cells and photoelectric detection. However, due to its own structural composition and weak binding force of ligands on the surface of nanocrystals, the structure of the material is very easy to be destroyed when exposed to polar solvents. At the same time, in the process of separation and purification, a large number of ligands on the surface are easy to be lost, which reduces the stability and quantum efficiency of halide perovskite nanocrystals to different degrees. These problems seriously hinder the development of the material in practical application. In this paper, the effects of organic and inorganic materials coating, Lewis acid and Lewis base passivation on the stability and optical properties of CsPbX3(X = Br, Cl, I) perovskite nanocrystals were summarized and analyzed in detail. Finally, the improvement of the stability of CsPbX3(X = Br, Cl, I) perovskite nanocrystalline was prospected.

Abstract:The undercoordinated Pb2+ sites on a CsPbBr3 surface would induce serious instability issue. Here we demonstrate a facile method to eliminate the undercoordinated Pb2+ sites of CsPbBr3 for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The SO42- ions can bond with the surface Pb2+ sites, thus forming a water-insoluble PbSO4. The surface PbSO4 can effectively improve the water resistance and decrease the defects of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs). The resultant CsPbBr3-SO4 NCs exhibit an improved photocatalytic activity toward CO2 reduction, which is about 8 times higher than that of the CsPbBr3 NCs. This work highlights the importance of surface modification on improving the photoelectronic properties of perovskites.

Abstract:The instability and clumping of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals in polar solutions have limited their practical use. In this paper, a convenient and effective surface modification strategy was applied to substitute the typical oleic acid (OA) with 3-bromopropionic acid (BPA) ligand for the one-step synthesis of CsPbBr3 NCs in the absence of any inert gas atmosphere with water as the non-solvent. Thanks to the synergistic effect of BPA and OAm on the surface of CsPbBr3 NCs, it has excellent dispersibility while exhibiting excellent stability in water. Even after being fully submerged in water for 168 h, the material can still emit a vibrant green light, and the emission peak position is stable at 520 nm. In contrast, the CsPbBr3 NCs of the OA ligand were completely burst in water within minutes. This study opens the door for the direct synthesis and preservation of CsPbBr3 NCs in the aqueous phase, which will be an important step in advancing their large-scale applications in extreme environments.

Abstract:This study reports a simple one‐pot fabrication method to prepare CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) by combining a water bath heating method with surface engineering strategy. CsPbBr3 NCs with high stability and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are finally synthesized through the common passivation of perovskite nanocrystals by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and oleylamine (OLA). Although CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) show excellent optoelectronic properties, their stability greatly limits their potential applications due to the ionicity. Stable bromine‐rich CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) are achieved by the thermal injection method, which includes adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to a cesium oleate precursor solution. The CTAB as a ligand provides strong binding to the NC surface to effectively passivate the surface defects, and most importantly helps to realize the formation of bromine‐rich CsPbBr3 NCs. The obtained bromine‐rich CsPbBr3 NCs show higher photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and enhanced moisture and UV illumination stability. These results provide a simple strategy to synthesize bromine‐rich CsPbBr3 NCs, which can be promising for integrating into the synthesize technique of perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Developing pathways to stabilize the intrinsically dynamic surface of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), especially metastable lead iodide PNCs, is an important but challenging task. Herein, we have realized ultra-stable colloidal CsPbI3 PNCs based on a multi-amine chelating ligand, N′-(2-aminoethyl)-N′-hexadecylethane-1,2-diamine (AHDA). The protonated AHDA can anchor the PNC surface lattice with a high binding energy of 2.36 eV, much larger than the 1.47 eV achieved with the commonly used oleylammonium ligands. The chelation effect greatly inhibits dynamic desorption of surface ligands and enables stabilization of CsPbI3 PNCs under various ambient stimuli, such as repeated purification (up to 15 cycles), polar solvents, heat, and light. The stable yet easily accessible surface of the AHDA-capped CsPbI3 PNCs renders them a robust photocatalyst in a stereoselective C–C oxidative coupling reaction. Furthermore, we show that the AHDA ligand can also be used to synthesize PNCs of several other compositions, namely CsPbCl3, CsPbBr3, CsPbBrI2, and hybrid FAPbI3 (FA = formamidine), with remarkably stable emission characteristics.

Water‐Assisted Size and Shape Control of CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals

Abstract:Lead-halide perovskites are well known to decompose rapidly when exposed to polar solvents, such as water. Contrary to this common-place observation, we have found that through introducing a suitable minor amount of water into the reaction mixture, we can synthesize stable CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The size and the crystallinity, and as a result the band gap tunability of the strongly emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals correlate with the water content. Suitable amounts of water change the crystallization environment, inducing the formation of differently shaped perovskites, namely spherical NCs, rectangular nanoplatelets, or nanowires. Bright CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with the photoluminescence quantum yield reaching 90 % were employed for fabrication of inverted hybrid inorganic/organic light-emitting devices, with the peak luminance of 4428 cd m-2 and external quantum yield of 1.7 %.
Facial synthesis of highly stable and bright CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals via an anion exchange at the water-oil interface

Abstract:Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted unprecedented attention owing to their compelling properties for optoelectronic applications. Compared with the classical hot-injection method, the room-temperature (RT) synthetic strategy is more facile and tender, but it is hard to obtain stable CsPbI3 NCs and it usually uses polar solvents that sometimes reduce the stability and properties of NCs. Here, we reported a simple approach to synthesize highly efficient and stable CsPbI3 as well as other color-tunable CsPbX3 NCs with high quantum efficiency at room temperature via an anion exchange at the water-oil interface, in which the as-synthesized pristine CsPbBr3 NCs in toluene were treated in aqueous solutions of HX (X=Cl, Br, and I) and protonated oleylamine (OAm) acted as a carrier. The synthesized CsPbI3 NCs had an emission at 680 nm and even showed excellent colloidal stability after being stored for 32 d. The high efficiency and stability of the obtained CsPbX3 NCs were ascribed to the facts that: (i) the polar reagents were almost removed from the surface of NCs; (ii) the defect-related nonradiative recombination was suppressed efficiently by surface passivation.

Abstract:All-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are generally prepared by liquid phase method with the help of volatile organic solvents, inert gas protection and complex organometallic precursors. Herein, a simple, efficient and green method based on all-solid-state mechanochemical synthesis is proposed to prepare CsPbBr3 NCs. NCs with excellent performance can be prepared by grinding raw materials CsBr and PbBr2 through high energy ball milling, and prepared NCs show good stability in ethanol and living conditions. Interestingly, CsPbBr3 NCs prepared by ball milling have a sudden increase in their fluorescence intensity dispersed in water. After soaking for 8 h, CsPbBr3 NCs have been almost entirely transformed into CsPb2Br5 NCs. The fluorescence intensity of samples is 80 times of that before soaking, and absolute PL quantum yield (PLQY) of samples increases significantly by up to 92%. These results provide a strong evidence for the current debate about whether CsPb2Br5 emits light and propose a deeper understanding about structural transition from orthorhombic CsPbBr3 to tetragonal CsPb2Br5, which is of great significance to the application of CsPb2Br5 in optoelectronic devices. This will provide a new idea for the synthesis and transformation of halide perovskites.

Abstract:Abstract Achieving good stability while maintaining excellent properties is one of the main challenges for enhancing the competitiveness of luminescent perovskite CsPbX 3 (X=Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs). Here, we propose a facile strategy to synthesize ceramic-like stable and highly luminescent CsPbBr 3 NCs by encapsulating them into silica derived from molecular sieve templates at high temperature (600–900 o C). The obtained CsPbBr 3 -SiO 2 powders not only show high photoluminescence quantum yield (~71%), but also show an exceptional stability comparable to the ceramic Sr 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ green phosphor. They can maintain 100% of their photoluminescence value under illumination on blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) chips (20 mA, 2.7 V) for 1000 h, and can also survive in a harsh hydrochloric acid aqueous solution (1 M) for 50 days. We believe that the above robust stabilities will significantly enhance the potential of perovskite CsPbX 3 NCs to be practically applied in LEDs and backlight displays.

Abstract:Despite intriguing physic-optical property of cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX3 NCs), the practical application is primarily hindered by their intrinsic instability. In this work, tube-like perovskite nanocrystal composites (denoted PDVB@CsPbBr3@SiO2 NCCs) are prepared via capitalizing on polymer nanotube as a nanoreactor in conjunction with concurrent in-situ silica encapsulation. By engineering surface ligand of silanes, the resulting PDVB@CsPbBr3@SiO2 NCCs exhibit no obvious PL loss after continuous UV irradiation for 30 day, heating at 80 °C for 48 h, and exposure to ambient air (with a humidity > 75%) for 60 day, which is superior to previous reports. Most importantly, PL intensity of PDVB@CsPbBr3@SiO2 NCCs is significantly enhanced after exposure to various polar organic solvents (POS) including MeOH, EtOH, IPA, DMF, THF and CHCl3, and kept strong emission after 30 day. Such dramatically improved stability of PDVB@CsPbBr3@SiO2 NCCs in POS may be attributed to the two-side protection from PDVB and SiO2 together with efficient surface passivation with solvent molecules as revealed by time-resolved PL measurement. In addition, using green emission of PDVB@CsPbBr3@SiO2 NCCs as color-converting component in liquid–crystal display (LCD) backlight film give rise to colorful and bright images with wide color gamut of 126.8%. This work represents a facile and robust strategy to craft polar organic solvent (POS)-tolerance perovskite nanocrystal composites with high emission, which shows grand promising in various catalysis reactions and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation display applications due to their attractive optical properties and low-cost production. However, the environmental stability of perovskite remains a major challenge, hindering their practical applications and scalability for commercialization. In this study, we present an effective method to enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals by coating them with a combination of Al2O3 and polymer. The unique double protection structure significantly improves their resistance to moisture, heat, and polar solvents. Notably, in comparison to conventional CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, the modified nanocrystals demonstrate superior stability along with excellent color quality. Following immersion in water for 360 hours, the modified nanocrystals retain 85% of the initial luminescence intensity. Furthermore, the thermal stability and resistance of the nanocrystals to organic solvents are both doubled compared to the nanocrystals without Al2O3 coating. The synthesized white light emitting diode using the modified PNCs achieves a color gamut coverage rate of 129% under standard NTSC, and nearly 100% under standard Rec.2020, indicating its potential for future display applications. This research presents a promising approach for the development of stable perovskites with enhanced performance in various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:All inorganic metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have been regarded as a new type of promising photocatalyst for the reduction of CO2. However, due to their strong ionicity and the labile surface ligands, there is still much room for improvement of the stability and efficiency of MHP photocatalysts. Here, we propose a new strategy simultaneously using ionic liquid (IL) as a surface passivation ligand and a precursor to mediate the growth and then stabilize CsPbBr3 MHPs for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. First, the TEM and XRD results show that the prepared CsPbBr3 has a cubic morphology with the monoclinic phase when the IL of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Omim]Br) is used as the surface ligand. When the molar ratio of [Omim]Br to Pb(CH3COO)2 is optimized to 2, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the prepared CsPbBr3 can reach as high as 90.93%, suggesting the effective reduction of surface defects by the IL ligand. Importantly, the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals show high stability under the ambient stimuli of light, heat, and humidity. The subsequent FT-IR and XPS characterizations indicate that the presence of [Omim]Br on the surface of CsPbBr3 increases the Br-rich state, which accounts for the excellent optical property and stability of the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Finally, with the assistance of IL as the activator of CO2, the CsPbBr3 photocatalysts provide a high evolution rate of 24.56 and 6.66 μmol g–1 h–1 for CO and CH4, respectively. Multifunctional ILs as passivation ligands, reaction precursors, and CO2 activators provide an efficient pathway to fabricate stable metal halide perovskites for photocatalytic CO2 conversion.
