Abstract:Verification pattern (VP) is a new technique to test embedded systems rapidly, and it has been used to test industrial safety-critical embedded systems successfully. The key concept of this approach is to classify system scenarios into patterns, and use the same code template to test all the scenarios of the same pattern. In this way, testing effort can be greatly reduced. This paper extends VPs so that they can fully interoperate with a formalized scenario model ACDATE. In this way, various static and dynamic analyses can be performed on system scenarios as well as on system patterns. Furthermore, this paper provides a mapping from system scenarios into temporal logic expressions. In this way, a practitioner can specify system constraints in scenarios, and follow the mapping to obtain the temporal logic expressions easily to perform formal model checking. This paper also provides an OO framework to support automated test script development from VPs. In this way, VPs can be used in an integrated process where both semi-formal analyses and formal techniques can be used together to develop mission-critical embedded applications.

Abstract:Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) consist of software interacting with the physical world, such as robots, vehicles, and industrial processes. CPS are frequently responsible for the safety of lives, property, or the environment, and so software correctness must be determined with a high degree of certainty. To that end, simply testing a CPS is insufficient, as its interactions with the physical world may be difficult to predict, and unsafe conditions may not be immediately obvious. Formal verification can provide stronger safety guarantees but relies on the accuracy of the verified system in representing the real system. Bringing together verification and implementation can be challenging, as languages that are typically used to implement CPS are not easy to formally verify, and languages that lend themselves well to verification often abstract away low-level implementation details. Translation between verification and implementation languages is possible, but requires additional assurances in the translation process and increases software complexity; having both in a single language is desirable. This paper presents a formalization of MARVeLus, a CPS language which combines verification and implementation. We develop a metatheory for its synchronous refinement type system and demonstrate verified synchronous programs executing on real systems.

Verification Patterns for Rapid Embedded System Verification

Abstract:Test result verification is always a costly task for embedded system testing. This paper presents a systematic process to develop verification patterns and use these patterns to verify test results for state-based real-time/embedded systems. The verification patterns are organized into an object-oriented verification framework so that it can be adaptive to changes rapidly The verification patterns are reusable and thus can save significant time and effort in constructing the test execution infrastructure and generating test scripts. This paper describes a systematic process to perform rapid embedded system verification: 1) abstracts verification patterns based on requirement/scenario patterns analysis; 2) generates test cases/scripts from the verification patterns; 3) develops data acquisition component for raw data retrieval and event assemblers; 4) executes test scripts locally or remotely, and 5) collects and analyzes the test results. This process has been applied to a car-alarm system and implantable device applications, which shows the framework developed can perform the verification tasks efficiently.

Abstract:Industries such as flexible manufacturing and home care will be transformed by the presence of robotic assistants. Assurance of safety and functional soundness for these robotic systems will require rigorous verification and validation. We propose testing in simulation using Coverage-Driven Verification (CDV) to guide the testing process in an automatic and systematic way. We use a two-tiered test generation approach, where abstract test sequences are computed first and then concretized (e.g., data and variables are instantiated), to reduce the complexity of the test generation problem. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we developed a testbench for robotic code, running in ROS-Gazebo, that implements an object handover as part of a human-robot interaction (HRI) task. Tests are generated to stimulate the robot's code in a realistic manner, through stimulating the human, environment, sensors, and actuators in simulation. We compare the merits of unconstrained, constrained and model-based test generation in achieving thorough exploration of the code under test, and interesting combinations of human-robot interactions. Our results show that CDV combined with systematic test generation achieves a very high degree of automation in simulation-based verification of control code for robots in HRI.

Abstract:The prospect of performing software verification directly using natural language requirements could pave the way to improved correctness and dependability. The key is to use natural language processing to derive a checkable specification and apply verification techniques to identify any software defects that may exist. However, imprecise or incomplete natural language requirements, as well as limitations of language processing, can lead to difficulties in achieving this goal. This paper proposes a framework that uses principles of design by contract to formalise requirements, by generating contracts from natural language requirements. We provide a case study on a sample Java source code to illustrate the opportunity of static checking and runtime assertion checking using natural language.
Synthetic Programming Elicitation for Text-to-Code in Very Low-Resource Programming and Formal Languages

Abstract:Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) for code applications have demonstrated remarkable zero-shot fluency and instruction following on challenging code related tasks ranging from test case generation to self-repair. Unsurprisingly, however, models struggle to compose syntactically valid programs in programming languages unrepresented in pre-training, referred to as very low-resource Programming Languages (VLPLs). VLPLs appear in crucial settings, including domain-specific languages for internal tools, tool-chains for legacy languages, and formal verification frameworks. Inspired by a technique called natural programming elicitation, we propose designing an intermediate language that LLMs "naturally" know how to use and which can be automatically compiled to a target VLPL. When LLMs generate code that lies outside of this intermediate language, we use compiler techniques to repair the code into programs in the intermediate language. Overall, we introduce \emph{synthetic programming elicitation and compilation} (SPEAC), an approach that enables LLMs to generate syntactically valid code even for VLPLs. We empirically evaluate the performance of SPEAC in a case study for the UCLID5 formal verification language and find that, compared to existing retrieval and fine-tuning baselines, SPEAC produces syntactically correct programs more frequently and without sacrificing semantic correctness.

Abstract:Hybrid systems with both discrete and continuous dynamics are an important model for real-world cyber-physical systems. The key challenge is to ensure their correct functioning w.r.t. safety requirements. Promising techniques to ensure safety seem to be model-driven engineering to develop hybrid systems in a well-defined and traceable manner, and formal verification to prove their correctness. Their combination forms the vision of verification-driven engineering. Often, hybrid systems are rather complex in that they require expertise from many domains (e.g., robotics, control systems, computer science, software engineering, and mechanical engineering). Moreover, despite the remarkable progress in automating formal verification of hybrid systems, the construction of proofs of complex systems often requires nontrivial human guidance, since hybrid systems verification tools solve undecidable problems. It is, thus, not uncommon for development and verification teams to consist of many players with diverse expertise. This paper introduces a verification-driven engineering toolset that extends our previous work on hybrid and arithmetic verification with tools for (i) graphical (UML) and textual modeling of hybrid systems, (ii) exchanging and comparing models and proofs, and (iii) managing verification tasks. This toolset makes it easier to tackle large-scale verification tasks.

Abstract:Virtualization of computing and networking, IT-OT convergence, cybersecurity and AI-based enhancement of autonomy are significantly increasing the complexity of CPS and CPSoS. New challenges have emerged to demonstrate that these systems are safe and secure. We emphasize the role of control and emerging fields therein, like symbolic control or set-based fault-tolerant and decentralized control, to address safety. We have chosen three open verification problems we deem central in cost-effective development and certification of safety critical CPSoS. We review some promising threads of research that could lead in the long term to a scalable and powerful verification strategy. Its main components are set-based and invariant-based design, contracts, adversarial testing, algorithmic geometry of dynamics, and probabilistic estimation derived from compositional massive testing. To explore these orientations in collaborative projects, and to promote them in certification arenas, we propose to continue and upgrade an open innovation drone-based use case that originated from a collaborative research project in aeronautic certification reformation

Abstract:Reactive programs combine traditional sequential programming constructs with primitives to allow communication with other concurrent agents. They are ubiquitous in modern applications, ranging from components systems and web services, to cyber-physical systems and autonomous robots. In this paper, we present an algebraic verification strategy for concurrent reactive programs, with a large or infinite state space. We define novel operators to characterise interactions and state updates, and an associated equational theory. With this we can calculate a reactive program's denotational semantics, and thereby facilitate automated proof. Of note is our reasoning support for iterative programs with reactive invariants, based on Kleene algebra, and for parallel composition. We illustrate our strategy by verifying a reactive buffer. Our laws and strategy are mechanised in Isabelle/UTP, our implementation of Hoare and He's Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) framework, to provide soundness guarantees and practical verification support.

Abstract:Researchers have recently designed a number of application-specific fault tolerance mechanisms that enable applications to either be naturally resilient to errors or include additional detection and correction steps that can bring the overall execution of an application back into an envelope for which an acceptable execution is eventually guaranteed. A major challenge to building an application that leverages these mechanisms, however, is to verify that the implementation satisfies the basic invariants that these mechanisms require--given a model of how faults may manifest during the application's execution. To this end we present Leto, an SMT based automatic verification system that enables developers to verify their applications with respect to a first-class execution model specification. Namely, Leto enables software and platform developers to programmatically specify the execution semantics of the underlying hardware system as well as verify assertions about the behavior of the application's resulting execution. In this paper, we present the Leto programming language and its corresponding verification system. We also demonstrate Leto on several applications that leverage application-specific fault tolerance mechanisms.
The Right Kind of Non-Determinism: Using Concurrency to Verify C Programs with Underspecified Semantics

Abstract:We present a novel and well automatable approach to formal verification of C programs with underspecified semantics, i.e., a language semantics that leaves open the order of certain evaluations. First, we reduce this problem to non-determinism of concurrent systems, automatically extracting a distributed Active Object model from underspecified, sequential C code. This translation process provides a fully formal semantics for the considered C subset. In the extracted model every non-deterministic choice corresponds to one possible evaluation order. This step also automatically translates specifications in the ANSI/ISO C Specification Language (ACSL) into method contracts and object invariants for Active Objects. We then perform verification on the specified Active Objects model, using the Crowbar theorem prover, which verifies the extracted model with respect to the translated specification and ensures the original property of the C code for all possible evaluation orders. By using model extraction, we can use standard tools, without designing a new complex program logic to deal with underspecification. The case study used is highly underspecified and cannot be handled correctly by existing tools for C.

Assured Automatic Programming via Large Language Models

Abstract:With the advent of AI-based coding engines, it is possible to convert natural language requirements to executable code in standard programming languages. However, AI-generated code can be unreliable, and the natural language requirements driving this code may be ambiguous. In other words, the intent may not be accurately captured in the code generated from AI-coding engines like Copilot. The goal of our work is to discover the programmer intent, while generating code which conforms to the intent and a proof of this conformance. Our approach to intent discovery is powered by a novel repair engine called program-proof co-evolution, where the object of repair is a tuple (code, logical specification, test) generated by an LLM from the same natural language description. The program and the specification capture the initial operational and declarative description of intent, while the test represents a concrete, albeit partial, understanding of the intent. Our objective is to achieve consistency between the program, the specification, and the test by incrementally refining our understanding of the user intent. Reaching consistency through this repair process provides us with a formal, logical description of the intent, which is then translated back into natural language for the developer's inspection. The resultant intent description is now unambiguous, though expressed in natural language. We demonstrate how the unambiguous intent discovered through our approach increases the percentage of verifiable auto-generated programs on a recently proposed dataset in the Dafny programming language.

Abstract:The design of safety-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) involve several dimensions, including physics, hardware rchitecture and software functionality. It is desirable to design CPSs by taking these issues into account uniformly and yet, few existing design workflows support this aim. For instance, AADL is an architecturecentric modelling formalism for CPSs, which focuses on modelling architecture and prototyping real-time hardware platforms, but it delegates physical and software behavioral models to so-called annexes. By contrast, Simulink/Stateflow (S/S) focuses on modelling interacting physical and software behaviors, but does not render the non-functional characteristics of their hardware platforms. To address this issue, in [1], we proposed the combination of AADL and S/S, called AADL S/S, to comodel CPSs and presented a method to uniformly analyse and verify them. AADL S/S provides a unified graphical co-modelling environment for CPS design and supports simulation through C code generation. Also, [1] presented a formal semantics of AADL S/S by translation to Hybrid Communicating Sequential Processes (HCSP), yielding a deductive verification framework of the combined models using Hybrid Hoare Logic (HHL). Additionally, [1] proved the correctness of the translation of AADL S/S to HCSP.
Hardware/Software Co-verification Using Path-based Symbolic Execution

Abstract:Conventional tools for formal hardware/software co-verification use bounded model checking techniques to construct a single monolithic propositional formula. Formulas generated in this way are extremely complex and contain a great deal of irrelevant logic, hence are difficult to solve even by the state-of-the-art Satis ability (SAT) solvers. In a typical hardware/software co-design the firmware only exercises a fraction of the hardware state-space, and we can use this observation to generate simpler and more concise formulas. In this paper, we present a novel verification algorithm for hardware/software co-designs that identify partitions of the firmware and the hardware logic pertaining to the feasible execution paths by means of path-based symbolic simulation with custom path-pruning, property-guided slicing and incremental SAT solving. We have implemented this approach in our tool COVERIF. We have experimentally compared COVERIF with HW-CBMC, a monolithic BMC based co-verification tool, and observed an average speed-up of 5X over HW-CBMC for proving safety properties as well as detecting critical co-design bugs in an open-source Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter design and a large SoC design.

Abstract:The software patterns provide building blocks to the design and implementation of a software system, and try to make the software engineering to progress from experience to science. The software patterns were made famous because of the introduction as the design patterns. After that, patterns have been researched and developed widely and rapidly. The series of books of pattern-oriented software architecture should be marked in the development of software patterns. As mentioned in these books, formalization of patterns and an intermediate pattern language are needed and should be developed in the future of patterns. So, in this book, we formalize software patterns according to the categories of the series of books of pattern-oriented software architecture, and verify the correctness of patterns based on truly concurrent process algebra. In one aspect, patterns are formalized and verified; in the other aspect, truly concurrent process algebra can play a role of an intermediate pattern language for its rigorous theory.

Scalable Automated Verification for Cyber-Physical Systems in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract:We formally introduce IsaVODEs (Isabelle verification with Ordinary Differential Equations), a framework for the verification of cyber-physical systems. We describe the semantic foundations of the framework's formalisation in the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant. A user-friendly language specification based on a robust state model makes our framework flexible and adaptable to various engineering workflows. New additions to the framework increase both its expressivity and proof automation. Specifically, formalisations related to forward diamond correctness specifications, certification of unique solutions to ordinary differential equations (ODEs) as flows, and invariant reasoning for systems of ODEs contribute to the framework's scalability and usability. Various examples and an evaluation validate the effectiveness of our framework.

Abstract:Collaborative robots could transform several industries, such as manufacturing and healthcare, but they present a significant challenge to verification. The complex nature of their working environment necessitates testing in realistic detail under a broad range of circumstances. We propose the use of Coverage-Driven Verification (CDV) to meet this challenge. By automating the simulation-based testing process as far as possible, CDV provides an efficient route to coverage closure. We discuss the need, practical considerations, and potential benefits of transferring this approach from microelectronic design verification to the field of human-robot interaction. We demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed approach by constructing a custom CDV testbench and applying it to the verification of an object handover task.

Abstract:We present a technique for the automated verification of abstract models of multithreaded programs providing fresh name generation, name mobility, and unbounded control. As high level specification language we adopt here an extension of communication finite-state machines with local variables ranging over an infinite name domain, called TDL programs. Communication machines have been proved very effective for representing communication protocols as well as for representing abstractions of multithreaded software. The verification method that we propose is based on the encoding of TDL programs into a low level language based on multiset rewriting and constraints that can be viewed as an extension of Petri Nets. By means of this encoding, the symbolic verification procedure developed for the low level language in our previous work can now be applied to TDL programs. Furthermore, the encoding allows us to isolate a decidable class of verification problems for TDL programs that still provide fresh name generation, name mobility, and unbounded control. Our syntactic restrictions are in fact defined on the internal structure of threads: In order to obtain a complete and terminating method, threads are only allowed to have at most one local variable (ranging over an infinite domain of names).

Abstract:In the dynamic fields of semiconductor design and digital system development, effective verification procedures are in high demand. In particular, functional verification is essential for space systems to guarantee mission success, prevent errors in intricate environments, and uphold the reliability vital for effective space exploration. Testing phase results extremely challenging because of the high complexity of systems, often due to the intricate interplay of hardware, software, and environmental factors, impeding comprehensive validation. This paper presents an innovative methodology for the functional verification of systems involved in space telecommunications: this is based on the development and integration of software Twin Models within advanced and automated verification environments, with the dual purpose of simplifying the stimulation of the Design Under Test (DUT) and producing instant-by-instant expected behavior. The proposed solutions are developed in SystemVerilog Hardware Verification Language (HVL) and are fully compliant with Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) standard. As proof of the effectiveness and applicability of this approach, examples of verification environments for different systems are given, including high-speed interfaces, such as SpaceWire (SpW) CODECs, and high-speed encoders and modulators for both Direct-to-Earth and inter-satellite communications applications. A test campaign was conducted for all these systems, and using the Twin Models made it possible to achieve 100% of both functional and code coverage. The final result is a significant simplification in the creation of tests and DUT debugging and a very highly flexible, self-checking, and automated verification environment able to test any possible DUT configuration efficiently.

Abstract:We formally introduce IsaVODEs (Isabelle verification with Ordinary Differential Equations), an open, compositional and extensible framework for the verification of cyber-physical systems. We extend a previous semantic approach with methods and techniques that increase its expressivity, proof automation, and scalability to the level of state-of-the-art deductive verification tools. Our contributions include a user-friendly specification language, a flexible hybrid store model, including vectors and matrices, and separation-logic-style rules for local reasoning with hybrid stores using a novel form of differentiation called framed Fréchet derivatives. The formalisation of correctness specifications with forward predicate transformers, the certification of flows as unique solutions to systems of ordinary differential equations, and invariant reasoning for such systems also contribute to the scalability and usability of our framework. In combination, these features make our framework flexible and adaptable to several verification workflows. A suite of examples and hybrid systems verification benchmarks validate our framework relative to other state-of-the-art approaches.
