Abstract:The effect of different surfactants on the transport of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in quartz sand-packed columns was firstly investigated under various conditions. The stable plateau values (C(max)) of the breakthrough curves (BTCs), critical PVs (the number of pore volumes of infusions needed to reach the C(max)), maximum transport distances (L(max)), deposition rate coefficients (kd) and retention rates were calculated to compare the transport and retention of MWCNTs under various conditions. Stability of the MWCNT suspensions as a function of the influencing factors was examined to reveal the underlying mechanism of the MWCNT retention. Results showed that MWCNTs suspended by different surfactants presented different BTCs; the MWCNT transport increased with increasing sand size and MWCNT concentration; high flow velocity was favorable for the MWCNT transport, while high Ca(2+) concentration and low pH were unfavorable for the transport; hetero-aggregation, straining and site blocking occurred during the transport.

Abstract:The environmental fate and risks of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in the subsurface have raised intensive concerns. Herein, the transport behaviors of CIP in both saturated quartz sand and sand/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) mixtures under different solution ionic strength of the solution and coexisting cation types were investigated. Batch adsorption experiments highlighted growing adsorptive capacity for CIP with the increasing content of MWCNTs in the MWCNTs-quartz sand mixtures (from 0.5% to 1.5%, w/w). Breakthrough curves (BTCs) of CIP in the MWCNTs-quartz sand mixtures were well fitted by the two-site chemical nonequilibrium model (R 2 > 0.833). The estimated retardation factors for CIP increased from 9.68 to 282 with growing content of MWCNTs in the sand column, suggesting the presence of MWCNTs significantly inhibited the transport of CIP in saturated porous media. Moreover, the values of retardation factors are negatively correlated with the ionic strength and higher ionic strength could facilitate the transport of CIP in the saturated porous media. Compared with monovalent cations (Na + ), the presence of divalent cations (Ca 2+ ) significantly facilitated the transport of CIP in the columns due to the complexation between CIP and Ca 2+ as well as deposition of MWCNTs aggregates on the sand surface. Results regarding CIP retention in columns indicated that MWCNTs could enhance the accumulation of CIP in the layers close to the influent of sand columns, while they could hinder upward transport of CIP to the effluent. This study improves our understanding for transport behaviors and environmental risk assessments of CIP in the saturated porous media with MWCNTs.

Surfactant removal with multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:The ability of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to remove a non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX100), an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulonate (SDBS), and a cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) from the aqueous phase was investigated. Untreated, OH-, and COOH-functionalized MWCNTs with different outer diameters and chemical composition were examined and compared. As both the concentrations of surfactants and MWCNTs initially added may affect removal efficiency of surfactants, a relationship between the initial concentration ratio of surfactants and MWCNTs (Rc) and the removal efficiency (E) was established. The results showed that for a given Rc (e.g., 0.8), removal efficiency of the tested surfactants by a specific MWCNT (e.g., the untreated one with outer diameter <8 nm) decreased in the following order: TX100 (52.3%) > SDBS (26.2%) > CTAB (3.8%). TX100 was more readily removed by MWCNTs than SDBS and CTAB, due to its longer aliphatic chain compared to SDBS and CTAB thus higher hydrophobicity, and stronger π-π interactions with the aromatic structure of the surfaces of graphite sheets relative to CTAB. Based upon the established relationship between Rc and E of surfactants by MWCNTs, the maximum removal efficiency and the most appropriate Rc of TX100 and SDBS by two MWCNTs (UT8 and OH8) were derived. It was interesting to notice that, except for the case to remove TX100 using UT8, even though a large quantity of UT8 or OH8 was added to the TX100 or SDBS removal systems, they cannot be completely removed, with the maximum removal efficiency in the range of 55.88-87.17%. This mostly resulted from strong aggregation of MWCNTs thus reducing their readily accessible surface area and porosity for sorption.
Effect of Clay Minerals on Transport of Surfactants Dispersed Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Porous Media

Abstract:Clay minerals can hinder the transport of various contaminants in soil and aquifer, but how clay minerals affect the transport of nanoparticles in aquifers has not been investigated in depth. In this paper, the transport of surfactants dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in well-defined quartz sand and mixtures of quartz sand and clay minerals (kaolinite and montmorillonite) with varying ionic strengths was studied. Sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) and octyl-phenol-ethoxylate (TX100) MWCNT suspensions can migrate through quartz sand easily, but the presence of less than 2% w/w clay minerals in quartz sand can significantly hinder the transport of MWCNT suspensions, especially at high ion strength (0.6 mM CaCl2). The inhibition mechanism of clay minerals for surfactant-dispersed MWCNTs in porous media is the interception of MWCNTs. Kaolinite has stronger inhibition effect for MWCNTs transport than montmorillonite because more kaolinite can be retained in the quartz sand. Adsorption of surfactants by clay minerals does not affect the transport of MWCNTs significantly. This finding is important for the environmental assessment of MWCNT transport risks in soils and aquifers.

Abstract:The authors discuss a large series of biopsy and necropsy findings in patients with giant cell arteritis (Buerger's thromboangiitis, Horton and Takayasu's diseases), and then in patients with other forms of arteritis with an inconstant plasmodial factor, such as the Chürg and Strauss syndrome, Wegener's disease, the pseudo-sarcoidosis form of lymphomatoid granulomatosis. The histology, correlated when necessary with ain immunofluorescent study, was completed by a topographical and evolutional study of the lesions in all cases. The pathogenesis of these different forms of arteritis is discussed in the light of the ultrastructural data concerning the formation of the various types of giant cell and the methods of identification of the vascular walls.
Transport behavior of functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes in water-saturated quartz sand as a function of tube length

Abstract:A series of one-dimensional column experiments was conducted to examine the effects of tube length on the transport and deposition of 4-ethoxybenzoic acid functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in water-saturated porous media. Aqueous MWCNTs suspensions were prepared to yield three distributions of tube lengths; 0.02-1.3 μm (short), 0.2-7.5 μm (medium), and 0.2-21.4 μm (long). Results of the column studies showed that MWCNT retention increased with increasing tube length. Nevertheless, more than 76% of the MWCNT mass delivered to the columns was detected in effluent samples under all experimental conditions, indicating that the functionalized MWCNTs were readily transported through 40-50 mesh Ottawa sand. Examination of MWCNT length distributions in the effluent samples revealed that nanotubes with lengths greater than 8 μm were preferentially deposited. In addition, measured retention profiles exhibited the greatest MWCNT deposition near the column inlet, which was most pronounced for the long MWCNTs, and decreased sharply with travel distance. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that MWCNTs were deposited on sand surfaces over the entire column length, while larger MWCNT bundles were retained at grain intersections and near the column inlet. A mathematical model based on clean bed filtration theory (CBFT) was unable to accurately simulate the measured retention profile data, even after varying the weighting function and incorporating a nonuniform attachment rate coefficient expression. Modification of the mathematical model to account for physical straining greatly improved predictions of MWCNT retention, yielding straining rate coefficients that were four orders-of-magnitude greater than corresponding attachment rate coefficients. Taken in concert, these experimental and modeling results demonstrate the potential importance of, and need to consider, particle straining and tube length distribution when describing MWCNT transport in water-saturated porous media.
Adsorption of Sulfamethoxazole on Different Types of Carbon Nanotubes in Comparison to Other Natural Adsorbents.

Abstract:The environmental risks of wide application and occurrence of antibiotics have attracted great concern but their environmental behaviors are still unclear. The fast development of nanotechnology also arise environmental concerns, one of which is that the discharge of nanomaterials into the environment may alter the environmental behavior and risks of various contaminants. This study conducted batch adsorption experiments of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a widely studied antibiotic, on various carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and sediment particles. The SMX adsorption data on other natural adsorbents were also collected from literature. The surface area of CNTs is an important parameter controlling their adsorption to SMX. Other properties, including diameters and surface functional groups, were also observed to be important in regulating SMX adsorption. Inorganic mineral particles have comparable adsorption coefficients with other natural sorbents including soils, sediments and sludges, suggesting the contribution of inorganic fractions to SMX adsorption could not be ignored and the normalization of adsorption coefficient by organic carbon content should be avoided. The adsorption coefficients of SMX on CNTs were generally two orders of magnitude higher than other natural sorbents. The presence of CNTs in the environment, especially in waste water and solid waste of water treatment plant, could greatly alter SMX behavior as well as its risks.
Dispersant Selection for Nanomaterials: Insight into Dispersing Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes by Small Polar Aromatic Organic Molecules

Abstract:Dispersion remains a technical challenge for effective applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We observed an interesting sorption phenomenon that measured sorption capacity of small and polar aromatic organic molecules (SPAOMs) by CNTs is up to 230 times higher than their theoretically calculated monolayer sorption capacity. Therefore, here we report the dispersion of CNTs using SPAOMs. The stability of CNTs suspension was enhanced by increasing equilibrium concentration of SPAOM, CNTs surface functionalization coverage and SPAOM water solubility. A nanoscaled sorption isotherm model was developed, showing a better performance than traditional bulkscaled model. More importantly, the new model is applicable to a wide range of organic compounds sorption on different nanomaterials. The dispersion parameter, m derived from the new model has a good linear relationship with the maximum available SPAOM–CNT contact area and SPAOM water solubility, respectively. Further, we successfully made CNT suspensions with different dispersibility by SPAOM according to the m value, indicating that m is an effective index representing the dispersibility of a compound. The reversible adsorption on CNT indicates SPAOM, as a new type of potential dispersant, is recyclable in CNT dispersion. Our study expands the knowledge on selecting of effective dispersants for nanomaterials and has great environmental significance.
Transport of TiO2 Nanoparticles in Soil in the Presence of Surfactants

Abstract:This paper aimed to investigate the influences of surfactants on the nanoparticle transport behavior in soil. The transport behaviors of TiO2 nanoparticles (nTiO2) in soil with three different surfactants, including Triton X-100 (TX-100), sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cationic cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were studied. Results showed that all the three surfactants decreased the mobility of nTiO2 in soil column, which were mainly caused by the strong adsorption of surfactants on soil and nTiO2. The inhibition order was as follows: CTAB>SDBS>TX-100. Combined effect experiments showed that when solution ionic strength (IS) increased, TX-100 or CTAB inhibited the mobility of nTiO2 in soil. However, the effect of SDBS on nTiO2 transport shifted from inhibition to facilitation when IS increased from 0.1 to 5mM. This was mainly attributed to the decreasing adsorption of SDBS on soil with increased IS, whereas the adsorption of TX-100 and CTAB was independent of IS. This innovative information motivates further insight into the role of surfactants on nanoparticle transport behavior in soil.
Adsorption of Triton X-series surfactants and its role in stabilizing multi-walled carbon nanotube suspensions

Abstract:Surfactants can enhance the stabilization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in water through their adsorption, thus affecting the environmental behavior and application of CNTs. However, the quantitative relationship between adsorption and stabilization and the role of the surfactant structure in the surfactant-CNT interactions are largely unknown. Therefore, Triton X-series surfactants with a same hydrophobic functional group (4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-phenyl) and different hydrophilic polyethoxyl chain lengths were selected to investigate their adsorption onto CNTs and their ability to stabilize CNT suspensions. Adsorption data were fitted well by Langmuir equation, indicating monolayer coverage on CNTs. Adsorption capacities of the surfactants increased with decreasing hydrophilic chain length: Triton-305<Triton-165<Triton-114<Triton-100. Electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond could be excluded as the main mechanism because adsorption was not significantly affected by pH change. Hydrophobic and pi-pi interactions between the surfactants and CNTs were the dominant mechanism for their adsorption. CNT suspension data were well fitted to a nonlinear equation with a similar form to the Langmuir equation. Suspended CNT amounts in water were positively related to the adsorption capacities of the surfactants, but negatively with the hydrophilic fraction ratio of the X-series surfactants.
Clay Minerals Affect the Stability of Surfactant-Facilitated Carbon Nanotube Suspensions.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), because of their wide application, will inevitably enter aquatic systems, but the fate and transport of their suspensions in the environment are largely unknown. Clay minerals are expected to interact with CNT suspensions, affecting their fate and bioavailability. This study investigated the influence of clay minerals (kaolinite and montmorillonite) on the stability of surfactant (SDBS, CTAB, and TX100) facilitated multiwalled CNT (MWCNT) suspensions. Adsorption of the surfactants by MWCNTs and clay minerals was also examined. This is a first study on the interaction between clay minerals and surfactant-CNT suspensions. Sorption of SDBS by clay minerals and MWCNTs followed the order MWCNTs >> montmorillonite approximately kaolinite; but sorption of CTAB and TX100 followed the order montmorillonite > MWCNTs > kaolinite. For SDBS suspended MWCNTs, introduction of montmorillonite and kaolinite could not change their stability; for CTAB suspended MWCNTs, both montmorillonite and kaolinite greatly deposited the suspended MWCNTs; for TX100 suspended MWCNTs, montmorillonite could partially deposit the suspended MWCNTs, whereas kaolinite showed minimal effect. Two mechanisms of clay minerals affecting MWCNT suspensions are (1) removal of surfactants by clay minerals from solution and MWCNT surface and (2) bridging between clay mineral and MWCNTs by surfactant.
Oxytetracycline Increases the Mobility of Carbon Nanotubes in Porous Media.

Abstract:The effect of engineered nanoparticles on the mobility of co-existing contaminants has been increasingly studied, while the reverse effect receives little attention. This study provides results from investigating the effect of oxytetracycline (OTC) on the mobility of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) in quartz sand (QS) columns at various solution ionic strengths (ISs) and pHs. The mobility of O-MWCNTs in QS columns was significantly enhanced by the presence of OTC under all of the tested solution conditions (IS: 0.1, 1.0, and 10mM; pH: 3.0, 5.5, and 8.5), with an increase of 8.6-50.9%. Such enhancement was nonlinear over OTC concentration, which firstly increased (0 to 2.5mgL-1 OTC) and then decreased (2.5 to 20mgL-1OTC) at pH5.5. The major contributor to the OTC-enhanced O-MWCNTs mobility was competition of the two analytes for adsorption sites on the QS surface. Batch attachment results show that the adsorption of O-MWCNTs in the presence of OTC onto QS was also nonlinear with OTC concentration (firstly decreased and then increased with increasing OTC) at pH5.5, which gave the plausible explanation for the nonlinear enhancement of O-MWCNTs transport in QS columns by the presence of OTC. In turn, both the carrier and competition actions of O-MWCNTs determined the mobility of OTC in QS columns and the carrier action was stronger when more OTC was associated with O-MWCNTs in the influent. These results imply that the mobility of O-MWCNTs in OTC polluted water and soil can be significantly stronger than that in non-polluted area.CAPSULE:OTC can increase the migration of O-MWCNTs mainly through the competition for adsorption sites on collectors.
Adsorption of Phenanthrene on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in the Presence of Nonionic Surfactants

Abstract:The bioavailability and mobility of phenanthrene (Phe) adsorbed by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) may be substantially influenced by nonionic surfactants used both in the synthesis and dispersion of MWCNTs. The adsorption mechanisms of Phe adsorbed onto MWCNTs under the different nonionic surfactants Tween 80 (TW-80) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) in the aqueous phase were investigated in terms of changes in the MWCNTs' compositions and structures. The results showed that TW-80 and TX-100 were easily adsorbed onto MWCNTs. Phe adsorption data onto MWCNTs were better suited to the Langmuir equation than the Freundlich equation. Both TW-80 and TX-100 reduced the adsorption capacity of Phe onto MWCNTs. When TW-80 and TX-100 were added in the adsorption system, the saturated adsorption mass of Phe decreased from 35.97 mg/g to 27.10 and 29.79 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the following three reasons. Firstly, the hydrophobic interactions between MWCNTs and Phe became weakened in the presence of nonionic surfactants. Secondly, the nonionic surfactants covered the adsorption sites of MWCNTs, which caused Phe adsorption to be reduced. Finally, nonionic surfactants can also promote the desorption of Phe from MWCNTs.
Understanding Interfacial Dynamics: Hydrostatic Pressure-Induced Sono-Dispersion of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Homogeneously dispersing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is crucial for minimizing agglomeration issues commonly encountered in commercially available CNTs samples, thereby enhancing their unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties. In this study, we propose an alternative hydrostatic pressure-driven dispersion approach to effectively disperse CNTs and assess the impact of hydrostatic pressure on CNTs dispersion in deionized water (DIW). Our results demonstrate that ultrasonic treatment under a hydrostatic pressure of 0.1 MPa enables the achievement of a high concentration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at approximately 4.23 mg/ml, significantly surpassing concentrations reported in recent studies (∼1.9 mg/ml). Thin buckypaper generated from these solutions exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity (∼4938 S/m). Numerical modeling demonstrates that the shock wave induced by bubble implosion is significantly enhanced, reaching 80 MPa under hydrostatic pressure, markedly higher than atmospheric pressure in previous studies (∼1.6 MPa). This enhancement leads to a twofold improvement in dispersion efficiency. For the first time, we reveal the underlying mechanism of nanobubbles (NBs) in dispersion stability. Our experimental results show a significant increase in the generation of NBs resulting from ultrasonic bubble collapse under hydrostatic pressure. This phenomenon plays a crucial role in the long-term stabilization of dispersion, which we observed over several months. The presence of negatively charged hydroxyl groups on the interface of the NBs is identified as a key factor in this stabilization process. The hydrostatic pressure-driven dispersion approach presented is essential for the large-scale dispersion of CNTs and other nanomaterials.
Influence of bentonite particles on the transport and deposition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in saturated porous media

Abstract:The influences and mechanisms of bentonite particles on the transport and deposition kinetics of multi?walled carbon nanotubes ( MWCNTs ) in irregular quartz sand were examined by direct comparison of both breakthrough curves and retained profiles with bentonite particles (10 mg·L-1 ) in MWCNTs suspension versus those without bentonite particles. Packed column experiments were conducted in both NaCl (1 mmol·L-1 and 30 mmol·L-1 ionic strengths) and CaCl2 (0.3 mmol·L-1 and 1. 2 mmol·L-1 ionic strengths) solutions at unadjusted pH (~5. 6). The breakthrough curves and retained profiles of MWCNTs with and without bentonite particles were almost the same in 1 mmol·L-1 NaCl solutions, indicating that bentonite particles in solutions had no obvious influence on MWCNTs transport and deposition at low ionic strength NaCl solutions. However, the breakthrough curve of MWCNTs with bentonite particles in solutions was lower than that without bentonite particles in 30 mmol·L-1 NaCl solutions, demonstrating that bentonite particles decreased MWCNTs transport at high ionic strength in NaCl solutions, and the increased MWCNTs deposition with bentonite particles was mainly observed at segments near to column inlet. In contrast to the opposite observation for MWCNTs transport with bentonite particles at low and high ionic strengths NaCl solutions, breakthrough curves and retained profiles of MWCNTs with bentonite particles and without bentonite particles were similar at both low and high ionic strengths CaCl2 solutions, demonstrating that bentonite particles had no influence on the transport and deposition of MWCNTs in CaCl2 solutions.

Abstract:The effect of a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX100), on the distribution of four representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenanthrene, fluorene, acenaphthene and naphthalene, in soil–water system was studied on a natural soil. The apparent soil–water distribution coefficient with surfactant (Kd∗) for these compounds increased when TX100 equilibrium concentration from zero to around the critical micelle concentration (CMC), followed by a decrease in Kd∗ at TX100 equilibrium concentration greater than CMC. This is a direct result of surfactant sorption onto soil followed by PAHs partitioning to the sorbed surfactant. The values of carbon-normalized solute distribution coefficient (Kss) with the sorbed TX100 are greater than the corresponding partition coefficients with soil organic matter (Koc), which indicates the soil-sorbed nonionic surfactant is more effective per unit mass as a partitioning medium than the native soil organic matter for PAHs. When Kd∗=Kd the corresponding initial concentration of surfactant was defined as critical washing concentration (CWC). Depending on the surfactant initial concentration below or above the CWC, the addition of nonionic surfactant can enhance the retardation of soil for PAHs or promote the removal of PAHs from soil, respectively. The values of Kd∗ and CWC can be predicted by a model, which correlates them with the compounds’ octanol–water partition coefficients (Kow), soil property and the amount of soil-sorbed surfactant.

Abstract:Understanding the transport behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in porous media is essential in determining their environmental impact, especially on the fate and mobility of organic contaminants. The transport of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS)-dispersed CNTs and their effects on the mobility of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in saturated glass bead-packed columns were investigated. The behavior of single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) were compared. A simulation was carried out using a model based on convection-dispersion equation. The results showed that MWNTs was more mobile than SWNTs under the same solution conditions through porous media. CNTs transport was controlled by surface attachment and physical straining. CNTs in the feed significantly enhanced TBBPA mobility and acted as TBBPA carriers in the column. Adsorption-desorption experiments indicated that the enhanced mobility came from the irreversible adsorption and slow desorption kinetics of CNT-associated TBBPA. The modified model was in good agreement with the transport data

Abstract:The stability of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in particulate aggregates and surfactant-facilitated suspensions after being mixed into eight types of fresh surface water samples was investigated. MWNTs in particulate aggregates could not be stabilized in any of the water samples except for the one having relatively high content of dissolved organic matter with the aid of sonication. Sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether (TX100) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) were used to prepare MWNT suspensions. SDBS- and TX100-stabilized MWNTs could partly remain suspending after being mixed into the water samples, whereas CTAB-stabilized MWNTs readily sedimentated due to the surface charge neutralization by the surface water contained negatively-charged anions and colloids. This is a first systematic study examining the stability of carbon nanotubes in natural surface waters, the results from which will be useful for understanding the transport, fate and ecological effect of carbon nanotubes in the aqueous environment.

Abstract:Sorption of an nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100, TX-100) on bentonite from water and the effects of ancationic surfactant (Cetyl Pyridinium Chloride, CPC), an anionic surfactant (Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate, SDBS), sodium chloride (NaCl) and temperatures on TX-100 sorption were investigated. TX-100 sorption on Na-bentonite is greater than on Ca-bentonite, which will be enhanced by CPC with low concentrations (Ce<0.03CMC) but reduced by CPC with high concentrations (Ce>1CMC) and SDBS. Mixed micelle formation of TX-100 and other surfactants in water could be used to explain the observed TX-100 sorption in the presence of CPC and SDBS. TX-100 sorption will also be enhanced by NaCl enormously, showing the removal rates increase from 56% to 99% when the added NaCl dose is higher than 1.7mol·L-1.The sorption amounts of TX-100 on bentonite were increased with temperatures.The parameter of thermodynamics, ΔH = 12.68kJ·mol-1,suggests that the driving force of sorption is the decreasing ΔG0 and the increasing ΔS0.The experimental results provide theoretical values for bentonite application in treatment of wastewater containing surfactants.

Abstract:Developing methods to measure interactions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with soils and sediments and understanding the impact of soil and sediment properties on CNT deposition are essential for assessing CNT environmental risks. In this study, we utilized functionalized carbon-14 labeled nanotubes to systematically investigate retention of multiwall CNTs (MWCNTs) by 3 humic acids, 3 natural biopolymers, and 10 model solid-phase polymers, collectively termed macromolecules. Surface properties, rather than bulk properties of macromolecules, greatly influenced MWCNT retention. As shown via multiple linear regression analysis and path analysis, aromaticity and surface polarity were the two most positive factors for retention, suggesting retention was regulated by pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. Moreover, MWCNT deposition was irreversible. These observations may explain the high retention of MWCNT in natural soils. Moreover, our findings on the relative contribution of each macromolecule property on CNT retention provide information on macromolecule selection for removal of MWCNTs from wastewater and provide a method for measuring CNT interactions with organic macromolecules.
