Abstract:Background and Objective: Plantain (Musa paradisiaca L) remains one of themost important staple food crop and perhaps, one of the oldest cultivated fruit tree crop in the humid tropics of Africa, Central Asia, South America and the West Indies.Fourteen (14) elite plantain cultivars were evaluated for genetic diversity using agro-morphological yield related attributes and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Materials and Methods: Six (6) microsatellite markers that showed distinct fragments varying from 50 bp to 3.0 Kbp in size of polymorphic bands were selected and used for molecular characterization and fingerprinting, while agro-morphological (yield–related) attributes assessed included bunch weight, number of hands/bunch, number of fingers/hands, number of fingers/bunch, harvest interval, length of plant cycle, pulp hardness and pulp to skin weight ratio of the elite plantain cultivars. Results: The total number of amplified bands (TNB), mean percentage polymorphism (%P), mean polymorphic information content (PIC), average marker index (MI) and mean gene diversity for the SSR assay were 59, 70.24%, 0.79, 3.74 and 0.832 respectively. Results of agro-morphological fingerprint study revealed a significant variations in terms of the bunch weight, number of finger per hands/bunch, number of fingers per hand, number of fingers /bunch, harvest interval, length of crop cycle, pulp hardness and pulp/wt. ratio all showed significant variations among the cultivars. The distribution of the elite cultivars along with the principal components showed cluster pattern of distribution within the study location. Principal component analysis revealed four principal components contributing 99.91% to the observed morphological variations while analysis of molecular variance revealed 96.00% contributed by molecular characteristics to observed variations. The yield displayed revealed significant contributions of bunch weight, fingers/hand and fingers/bunch as the main indices for plantain yield. The dendrograms for both morphological and molecular characteristics delineated the cultivars into four distinct cluster groups and subgroups each varying in genetic distance. Conclusion: These good cultivars can be exploited for the improvement of low yielding cultivars in other region to increase and improve plantain yield, promote food security and income generation especially under the present economic realities where food security is threatened by the global food crises and declining crop productivity.

Abstract:BackgroundBanana is a nutritionally important crop across tropical and sub-tropical countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America and Asia. Although cultivars have evolved from diploid, triploid and tetraploid wild Asian species of Musa acuminata (A genome) and Musa balbisiana (B genome), many of today's commercial cultivars are sterile triploids or diploids, with fruit developing via parthenocarpy. As a result of restricted genetic variation, improvement has been limited, resulting in a crop frequently lacking resistance to pests and disease. Considering the importance of molecular tools to facilitate development of disease resistant genotypes, the objectives of this study were to develop polymorphic microsatellite markers from BAC clone sequences for M. acuminata subsp. burmannicoides, var. Calcutta 4. This wild diploid species is used as a donor cultivar in breeding programs as a source of resistance to diverse biotic stresses.FindingsMicrosatellite sequences were identified from five Calcutta 4 BAC consensi datasets. Specific primers were designed for 41 loci. Isolated di-nucleotide repeat motifs were the most abundant, followed by tri-nucleotides. From 33 tested loci, 20 displayed polymorphism when screened across 21 diploid M. acuminata accessions, contrasting in resistance to Sigatoka diseases. The number of alleles per SSR locus ranged from two to four, with a total of 56. Six repeat classes were identified, with di-nucleotides the most abundant. Expected heterozygosity values for polymorphic markers ranged from 0.31 to 0.75.ConclusionsThis is the first report identifying polymorphic microsatellite markers from M. acuminata subsp. burmannicoides, var. Calcutta 4 across accessions contrasting in resistance to Sigatoka diseases. These BAC-derived polymorphic microsatellite markers are a useful resource for banana, applicable for genetic map development, germplasm characterization, evolutionary studies and marker assisted selection for traits.
Evidence for metabolite composition underlying consumer preference in Sub-Saharan African Musa spp.

Abstract:Breeding programs for disease resistant bananas in Sub-Saharan Africa generated resistant bananas, which did not meet fruit quality characteristics preferred by consumers. The present study aimed to establish chemotypes underlying preferred cooking bananas of Matooke, Mchare and plantain and less preferred Mbidde bananas, used for beer brewing. The metabolite data of Mbidde showed higher levels of metabolites associated with sour, sweet, and astringent taste; as well as different textural properties associated with cell wall composition and lignin content. Significant differences in the majority of specialised and primary metabolites were observed in the pulp of cooking banana groups. Analysis of peel tissue indicated similar metabolic differences in the protective layer surrounding the pulp and suggested a distinct genetic regulation of phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways between the genome groups. In summary, the present data can be used to establish metabolic traits associated with consumer preference, which can augment modern breeding programs.

Abstract:The East African highlands, home to more than 80 cultivated varieties of locally evolved bananas, constitute a secondary centre of banana diversity. Uganda is the leading producer and consumer of banana in the region and also enjoys the highest diversity of a group of bananas uniquely adapted to this region. These East African highland bananas comprise cooking and brewing types. The former is a staple for more than 7 million people and thus important for food security. Little is known about the distribution of the vast germplasm and this study was set up to help determine a distribution pattern and to understand the dynamics of cultivar change using farmers participatory appraisal methods. The study involved a guided interview with 120 farmers, at 24 sites throughout the banana-growing region of Uganda, to reveal cultivar diversity, proportions, distribution and preferences. Cultivar diversity ranged from 18 to 34 (mean = 26) cultivars per site, and from 4 to 22 (mean = 12.3), cultivars per individual farm. Such high diversity was attributed to a variety of end uses, better food security and the perception that each cultivar had a unique range of strengths and weaknesses. Highland banana (AAA-EA) represented 76% of total production while Kayinja (‘Pisang Awak’ subgroup) (ABB) contributed 8%; Ndiizi (’Ney Poovan’ subgroup) (AB) 7%; Kisubi (‘Ney Poovan’ subgroup) (AB) 5%; Gros Michel (‘Bogoya’) (AAA) 2%; and plantain (AAB) 2%. Although 130 highland cultivars were recorded, only 10 constituted 50% of highland banana production while 45 cultivars were found at only 1 or 2 sites. A few cultivars showed more universal distribution and it is proposed that these may be the oldest and best performing local landraces.

Abstract:New varieties are often developed on research stations with limited farmer involvement until the final stages of testing. Recently, farmer participatory approaches have been employed to include farmers' input into breeding objectives at much earlier stages of varietal development. This paper reports on a farmer survey in Uganda to record farmer selection criteria for banana cultivars as a pre-breeding activity. From ranked data, bunch size and crop maturation time were the key selection criteria in the county's most important commercial production zones. Stand longevity, taste and crop maturation time were key factors where banana production is in decline and sale of bananas less important. Principal component analysis revealed that, nationally, stand longevity and tolerance of marginal soils were the most important criteria, probably because the larger part of overall production is for subsistence.

Abstract:The majority of cultivated bananas originated from inter- and intra(sub)specific crosses between two wild diploid species, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. Hybridization and polyploidization events during the evolution of bananas led to the formation of clonally propagated cultivars characterized by a high level of genome heterozygosity and reduced fertility. The combination of low fertility in edible clones and differences in the chromosome structure among M. acuminata subspecies greatly hampers the breeding of improved banana cultivars. Using comparative oligo-painting, we investigated large chromosomal rearrangements in a set of wild M. acuminata subspecies and cultivars that originated from natural and human-made crosses. Additionally, we analyzed the chromosome structure of F1 progeny that resulted from crosses between Mchare bananas and the wild M. acuminata 'Calcutta 4' genotype. Analysis of chromosome structure within M. acuminata revealed the presence of a large number of chromosomal rearrangements showing a correlation with banana speciation. Chromosome painting of F1 hybrids was complemented by Illumina resequencing to identify the contribution of parental subgenomes to the diploid hybrid clones. The balanced presence of both parental genomes was revealed in all F1 hybrids, with the exception of one clone, which contained only Mchare-specific SNPs and thus most probably originated from an unreduced diploid gamete of Mchare.
Stability of fruit ripening traits of banana (Musa species) across postharvest environments

Abstract:Banana (Musa species) is the fourth most important export crop worldwide after cereals, oil crops and sugar. In spite of this socio-economic significance, the crop suffers massive postharvest losses caused by mechanical fruit damage, limited infrastructure for fruit ripening, postharvest diseases and physiological disorders. Although use of optimum postharvest environments such as packaging and storage temperatures can reduce fruit loss and improve ripening quality; information regarding the interaction between varieties and postharvest environments and stability of fruit ripening traits across postharvest environments is limited. The objectives of this study were to determine the magnitude of interaction of varieties with postharvest environments on fruit ripening traits and to identify stable banana variety for ripening across postharvest environments. Seven commonly grown banana varieties (Dwarf Cavendish, William I, Grand Naine, Poyu, Giant Cavendish, Butazu and Local variety) were laid out in a completely randomized design with five replications in ten varied postharvest environments. The result indicated that pulp and peel ratio had negative high principal component one (PCA1) score whereas the PCA1 score for postharvest period, peel weight and fruit weight were positive and high. Cluster analysis grouped Dwarf Cavendish and Grand Naine; Poyu and Butazu varieties together for postharvest traits whereas the local variety was clustered separately. This study has demonstrated that hybridization of local with the introduced varieties can be done to improve postharvest traits. AMMI depicted significant variation for genotype, postharvest environments and their interactions for all traits. The magnitude of environmental effect was higher than the genotype and interaction effects. AMMI and GGE biplot analyses identified Gran Naine, Poyu and William I as consistent for ripening traits across postharvest environments.
Genome-Wide Novel Genic Microsatellite Marker Resource Development and Validation for Genetic Diversity and Population Structure Analysis of Banana

Abstract:Trait tagging through molecular markers is an important molecular breeding tool for crop improvement. SSR markers encoded by functionally relevant parts of a genome are well suited for this task because they may be directly related to traits. However, a limited number of these markers are known for Musa spp. Here, we report 35136 novel functionally relevant SSR markers (FRSMs). Among these, 17,561, 15,373 and 16,286 FRSMs were mapped in-silico to the genomes of Musa acuminata, M. balbisiana and M. schizocarpa, respectively. A set of 273 markers was validated using eight accessions of Musa spp., from which 259 markers (95%) produced a PCR product of the expected size and 203 (74%) were polymorphic. In-silico comparative mapping of FRSMs onto Musa and related species indicated sequence-based orthology and synteny relationships among the chromosomes of Musa and other plant species. Fifteen FRSMs were used to estimate the phylogenetic relationships among 50 banana accessions, and the results revealed that all banana accessions group into two major clusters according to their genomic background. Here, we report the first large-scale development and characterization of functionally relevant Musa SSR markers. We demonstrate their utility for germplasm characterization, genetic diversity studies, and comparative mapping in Musa spp. and other monocot species. The sequences for these novel markers are freely available via a searchable web interface called Musa Marker Database.

Abstract:Bananas (Musa spp.) are herbaceous plant members of the Musaceae family, which has different morphological characters. This study aims to identify the relationship between banana cultivars based on morphological characteristics. The research was done from August to November 2022 in Sungai Pinyuh District, Mempawah Regency. This research used the exploratory method with the purposive sampling technique and was then analyzed using the UPGMA method through the Numeric Taxonomy and Multivariate System (NTSYS version 2.0) program. The bananas from Sungai Pinyuh regency consist of kepok banana, ambon banana, forty-day banana, barangan banana, awak banana, and kak mirah banana. The results of the banana relatedness analysis show a similarity level of 0.44, which is divided into two groups, A and B. Group A consists of 3 cultivars, namely banana kepok, banana awak, and banana kak mirah; group B consists of 3 cultivars, namely banana ambon, banana barangan, and banana forty days.
Fruit Morphology and Nutritional Composition of Different Genome Groups of Six Bananas Cultivars from Bali Island

Abstract:Bali is home to at least 43 banana cultivars, each serving a wide range of purposes. To support its future development, there is a need to obtain essential information on the morphological and nutritional characteristics of these bananas for domestic needs and the tourism market. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the fruit morphology and nutritional composition of six local Balinese banana cultivars mainly consumed on Bali Island, namely Pisang Mas (AA), Buluh (AAA), Lumut (AAA), Susu (AAB), Raja (ABB) and Kepok (ABB) genomes. The observation of fruit morphology followed the guidelines of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute method for bananas. The nutritional composition was analyzed using standard methods by measuring the proximate composition, vitamin C and concentrations of minerals K, Ca, Fe and P. Based on the morphological relationship coefficient values, it was discovered that all banana cultivars were closely related. Dessert bananas of Pisang Mas, Buluh, Lumut and Susu shared a close relationship with their ancestor Musa acuminata , which contributed to the ‘A’ genome. Meanwhile, Pisang Raja, which could be employed as a dessert or cooking banana, and Pisang Kepok as a cooking banana, exhibited a closer relationship. Various cultivars showed different nutritional compositions in their fruits. In every 100 g of edible portion, the nutrient values of the six bananas contained high carbohydrates and total energy, abundant vitamin C and K, moderate total fibers and protein, as well as low fat and Fe. Based on the nutritional composition, six Bali banana cultivars were found suitable as valuable ingredients in alleviating food insecurity or as dietary components.
The impact of phenotypic and molecular data on the inference of Colletotrichum diversity associated with Musa

Abstract:Developing a comprehensive and reliable taxonomy for the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex will require adopting data standards on the basis of an understanding of how methodological choices impact morphological evaluations and phylogenetic inference. We explored the impact of methodological choices in a morphological and molecular evaluation of Colletotrichum species associated with banana in Brazil. The choice of alignment filtering algorithm has a significant impact on topological inference and the retention of phylogenetically informative sites. Similarly, the choice of phylogenetic marker affects the delimitation of species boundaries, particularly if low phylogenetic signal is confounded with strong discordance, and inference of the species tree from multiple-gene trees. According to both phylogenetic informativeness profiling and Bayesian concordance analyses, the most informative loci are DNA lyase (APN2), intergenic spacer (IGS) between DNA lyase and the mating-type locus MAT1-2-1 (APN2/MAT-IGS), calmodulin (CAL), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), glutamine synthetase (GS), β-tubulin (TUB2), and a new marker, the intergenic spacer between GAPDH and an hypothetical protein (GAP2-IGS). Cornmeal agar minimizes the variance in conidial dimensions compared with potato dextrose agar and synthetic nutrient-poor agar, such that species are more readily distinguishable based on phenotypic differences. We apply these insights to investigate the diversity of Colletotrichum species associated with banana anthracnose in Brazil and report C. musae, C. tropicale, C. theobromicola, and C. siamense in association with banana anthracnose. One lineage did not cluster with any previously described species and is described here as C. chrysophilum.
Interspecific introgression patterns reveal the origins of worldwide cultivated bananas in New Guinea

Abstract:Hybridizations between Musa species and subspecies, enabled by their transport via human migration, were proposed to have played an important role in banana domestication. We exploited sequencing data of 226 Musaceae accessions, including wild and cultivated accessions, to characterize the inter(sub)specific hybridization pattern that gave rise to cultivated bananas. We identified 11 genetic pools that contributed to cultivars, including two contributors of unknown origin. Informative alleles for each of these genetic pools were pinpointed and used to obtain genome ancestry mosaics of accessions. Diploid and triploid cultivars had genome mosaics involving three up to possibly seven contributors. The simplest mosaics were found for some diploid cultivars from New Guinea, combining three contributors, i.e., banksii and zebrina representing Musa acuminata subspecies and, more unexpectedly, the New Guinean species Musa schizocarpa. Breakpoints of M. schizocarpa introgressions were found to be conserved between New Guinea cultivars and the other analyzed diploid and triploid cultivars. This suggests that plants bearing these M. schizocarpa introgressions were transported from New Guinea and gave rise to currently cultivated bananas. Many cultivars showed contrasted mosaics with predominant ancestry from their geographical origin across Southeast Asia to New Guinea. This revealed that further diversification occurred in different Southeast Asian regions through hybridization with other Musa (sub)species, including two unknown ancestors that we propose to be M. acuminata ssp. halabanensis and a yet to be characterized M. acuminata subspecies. These results highlighted a dynamic crop formation process that was initiated in New Guinea, with subsequent diversification throughout Southeast Asia.
Banana Classification Using Sanger Sequencing of the Ribosomal DNA Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) Region

Abstract:Banana (Musa spp.) is one of the most economically important horticultural crops. There are many types of banana, with differing ploidy (usually diploid, triploid, or tetraploid) and genome types (most containing the A or/and B genome). Currently, observation and genome type detection are commonly used to identify banana germplasm resources. However, observation is tedious, while genome type detection cannot distinguish categories below genome types. It is, therefore, urgent to establish a simple and effective method for identifying banana germplasm resources. This study sequenced and analyzed the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of 62 banana germplasm resources and found that the sequencing peaks, especially the 20 bp region near the 420-bp position (referred to as the 420-bp region), exhibited relatively recognizable and repeatable polymorphism characteristics. Using the 420-bp region as a marker, we were able to quickly distinguish bananas belonging to different genome type groups or different subgroups in the same genome type group. Moreover, it appeared that Sanger sequencing of ITS could be used to identify hybrid banana offspring. In general, ITS sequencing simplifies the classification of banana germplasm resources and has potential application in several areas of Musa improvement.
Painting the diversity of a world′s favourite fruit: A next generation catalogue of cultivated bananas

Abstract:Banana is an important food crop for many tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Due to their sterility, banana landraces are clonally propagated. However, different factors, as synonymy and the effects of environment, make their assignment to described sets of clones, or cultivars groups, difficult. Consequently, passport data of accessions in genebanks is often uncomplete and sometimes inaccurate. With the recent advances in genomics, a new powerful tool was developed enabling the fine-scale characterization of banana′s ancestry along chromosomes, i.e. chromosome painting. We applied this method to a high-throughput genotyping data set obtained from 317 banana accessions spanning most of the known cultivar groups. This set included both genebank and new uncharacterized materials. By comparing curated morphological assignation to the chromosome painting results, we were able to compile a catalogue referencing the chromosome painting patterns of most of the described cultivar groups. Examining the genomic patterns obtained, we discovered intra-group variability. In a few groups, mitotic recombination or deletions were clonally accumulated in cultivars. In addition, we identified at least 4 groups in which cultivars resulting from distinct sexual events co-existed, notably Pisang Awak in which 5 distinct clones of two ploidy levels were identified. New clones were also discovered in the newest materials of the set, showing that a wider diversity of clones still exist on farm. Finally, we discussed the implications of these findings for the improvement of both the conservation and the use of banana genetic resources.

Abstract:Banana (Musa sp.) is a vegetatively propagated, low fertility, potentially hybrid and polyploid crop. These qualities make the breeding and targeted genetic improvement of this crop a difficult and long process. The Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) approach is becoming widely used in crop plants and has proven efficient to detecting candidate genes for traits of interest, especially in cereals. GWAS has not been applied yet to a vegetatively propagated crop. However, successful GWAS in banana would considerably help unravel the genomic basis of traits of interest and therefore speed up this crop improvement. We present here a dedicated panel of 105 accessions of banana, freely available upon request, and their corresponding GBS data. A set of 5,544 highly reliable markers revealed high levels of admixture in most accessions, except for a subset of 33 individuals from Papua. A GWAS on the seedless phenotype was then successfully applied to the panel. By applying the Mixed Linear Model corrected for both kinship and structure as implemented in TASSEL, we detected 13 candidate genomic regions in which we found a number of genes potentially linked with the seedless phenotype (i.e. parthenocarpy combined with female sterility). An additional GWAS performed on the unstructured Papuan subset composed of 33 accessions confirmed six of these regions as candidate. Out of both sets of analyses, one strong candidate gene for female sterility, a putative orthologous gene to Histidine Kinase CKI1, was identified. The results presented here confirmed the feasibility and potential of GWAS when applied to small sets of banana accessions, at least for traits underpinned by a few loci. As phenotyping in banana is extremely space and time-consuming, this latest finding is of particular importance in the context of banana improvement.
Origins And Domestication Of Cultivated Banana Inferred From Chloroplast And Nuclear Genes

Abstract:Background: Cultivated bananas are large, vegetatively-propagated members of the genus Musa. More than 1,000 cultivarsare grown worldwide and they are major economic and food resources in numerous developing countries. It has been suggested that cultivated bananas originated from the islands of Southeast Asia (ISEA) and have been developed through complex geodomestication pathways. However, the maternal and parental donors of most cultivars are unknown, and the pattern of nucleotide diversity in domesticated banana has not been fully resolved.Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied the genetics of 16 cultivated and 18 wild Musa accessions using two singlecopy nuclear (granule-bound starch synthase I, GBSS I, also known as Waxy, and alcohol dehydrogenase 1, Adh1) and two chloroplast (maturase K, matK, and the trnL-F gene cluster) genes. The results of phylogenetic analyses showed that all Agenome haplotypes of cultivated bananas were grouped together with those of ISEA subspecies of M. acuminata (Agenome). Similarly, the B-and S-genome haplotypes of cultivated bananas clustered with the wild species M. balbisiana (Bgenome) and M. schizocarpa (S-genome), respectively. Notably, it has been shown that distinct haplotypes of each cultivar (A-genome group) were nested together to different ISEA subspecies M. acuminata. Analyses of nucleotide polymorphism in the Waxy and Adh1 genes revealed that, in comparison to the wild relatives, cultivated banana exhibited slightly lower nucleotide diversity both across all sites and specifically at silent sites. However, dramatically reduced nucleotide diversity was found at nonsynonymous sites for cultivated bananas.Conclusions/Significance: Our study not only confirmed the origin of cultivated banana as arising from multiple intra-and inter-specific hybridization events, but also showed that cultivated banana may have not suffered a severe genetic bottleneck during the domestication process. Importantly, our findings suggested that multiple maternal origins and a reduction in nucleotide diversity at nonsynonymous sites are general attributes of cultivated bananas.

Abstract:Cement and cement components have previously been shown to exhibit negligible sorption for cesium. Pyrogenic silica has been examined as an additive to cement materials for its ability to reduce the leachability of cesium and to provide a host material with permanent sorption sites. The incorporation of silica into cement composites can also improve the physical characteristics and strength of these materials as long ages. At neutral pH values, there is significant sorption of cesium by silica, but in high pH regimes, such as occur in cement environments, initial sorption is enhanced but this high level of sorption is followed by a gradual release of Cs. This apparent desorption is due to the consumption of SiO2 by Ca(OH)2 to form products which have little sorption potential for cesium. If, however, sufficient SiO2 is added to the system initially such that an excess remains after satisfying the demands of the Ca(OH)2 reaction, permanent sorption sites for cesium may be created.

Abstract:The Banana is a member of the Musaceae family and is one of India's most significant fruit crops. Micronutrients are vital for any crop, and inadequate use of micronutrients in maintaining the health and production of the soil has now reached a threatening level. Therefore, the present study, “Understanding the Degree of Association Among Different Horticultural Traits in Banana (Musa paradisiaca L.),” was carried out. The whole study was conducted at the Experimental Farm, Department of Plant Physiology, Agricultural Biochemistry, and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, College of Agriculture, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, during the years 2020–21 and 2021–22. The experiment was carried out with the Grand Naine cultivar of banana and laid out following a complete randomized block design in three replications. The treatment comprised different concentrations of micronutrients, viz., zinc (1.5 and 2.0 ppm), iron (1.5 and 2.0 ppm), and boron (0.3 and 0.6 ppm). The micronutrients were given as foliar spray at the 3rd and 5th months after planting. To find out the association between the different traits and fruit yield plant-1, correlation analysis was carried out. The results showed that various traits such as plant height, number of leaves, pseudo stem girth, leaf area (morpho-physiological traits), total acidity, zinc content (biochemical traits), bunch length, number of hands bunch-1, bunch weight, number of fruits hand-1, average length of finger and average circumference of finger were highly (p> 0.01 or p< 0.05) and positively associated with the fruit yield plant-1.

Abstract:Bananas (Musa spp.) are one of the world's most important fruit crops and play a vital role in food security for many developing countries. Most banana cultivars are triploids derived from inter- and intraspecific hybridizations between the wild diploid ancestor species Musa acuminate (AA) and M. balbisiana (BB). We report two haplotype-resolved genome assemblies of the representative AAB-cultivated types, Plantain and Silk, and precisely characterize ancestral contributions by examining ancestry mosaics across the genome. Widespread asymmetric evolution is observed in their subgenomes, which can be linked to frequent homologous exchange events. We reveal the genetic makeup of triploid banana cultivars and verify that subgenome B is a rich source of disease resistance genes. Only 58.5% and 59.4% of Plantain and Silk genes, respectively, are present in all three haplotypes, with >50% of genes being differentially expressed alleles in different subgenomes. We observed that the number of upregulated genes in Plantain is significantly higher than that in Silk at one-week post-inoculation with Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (Foc TR4), which confirms that Plantain can initiate defense responses faster than Silk. Additionally, we compared genomic and transcriptomic differences among the genes related to carotenoid synthesis and starch metabolism between Plantain and Silk. Our study provides resources for better understanding the genomic architecture of cultivated bananas and has important implications for Musa genetics and breeding.

Abstract:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may occur in patients with achondroplasia. Since the bulk of growth hormone (GH) is secreted in relation to slow wave sleep (SWS), disordered sleep may hinder GH release and subsequent growth. To examine these relationships, a 9 yr old prepubertal male achondroplastic dwarf with growth failure and OSA was studied with polysomnography and q 20 min sampling for sleep entrained GH before and 4 mos. after therapeutic tracheostomy (T).Correction of sleep apnea normalized SWS and led to normalization of sleep entrained GH secretion and distinctly increased growth rate sustained 8 mos. after T. These results suggest that OSA in achondroplasia may further impair growth in these youngsters. Deficient sleep entrained secretion of GH is fully reversible by therapeutic tracheostomy. This is the first documentation of reversible GH deficiency caused by disordered sleep.
