Abstract:Prediction has a fundamental role in language processing. However, predictions can be made at different levels, and it is not always clear whether speech sounds, morphemes, words, meanings, or communicative functions are anticipated during dialogues. Previous studies reported specific brain signatures of communicative pragmatic function, in particular enhanced brain responses immediately after encountering an utterance used to request an object from a partner, but relatively smaller ones when the same utterance was used for naming the object. The present experiment now investigates whether similar neuropragmatic signatures emerge in recipients before the onset of upcoming utterances carrying different predictable communicative functions. Trials started with a context question and object pictures displayed on the screen, raising the participant's expectation that words from a specific semantic category (food or tool) would subsequently be used to either name or request one of the objects. Already 600 msec before utterance onset, a larger prediction potential was observed when a request was anticipated relative to naming expectation. As this result is congruent with the neurophysiological difference previously observed right after the critical utterance, the anticipatory brain activity may index predictions about the social-communicative function of upcoming utterances. In addition, we also found that the predictable semantic category of the upcoming word was likewise reflected in the anticipatory brain potential. Thus, the neurophysiological characteristics of the prediction potential can capture different types of upcoming linguistic information, including semantic and pragmatic aspects of an upcoming utterance and communicative action.
A speech planning network for interactive language use

Abstract:During conversation, people take turns speaking by rapidly responding to their partners while simultaneously avoiding interruption1,2. Such interactions display a remarkable degree of coordination, as gaps between turns are typically about 200 milliseconds3-approximately the duration of an eyeblink4. These latencies are considerably shorter than those observed in simple word-production tasks, which indicates that speakers often plan their responses while listening to their partners2. Although a distributed network of brain regions has been implicated in speech planning5-9, the neural dynamics underlying the specific preparatory processes that enable rapid turn-taking are poorly understood. Here we use intracranial electrocorticography to precisely measure neural activity as participants perform interactive tasks, and we observe a functionally and anatomically distinct class of planning-related cortical dynamics. We localize these responses to a frontotemporal circuit centred on the language-critical caudal inferior frontal cortex10 (Broca's region) and the caudal middle frontal gyrus-a region not normally implicated in speech planning11-13. Using a series of motor tasks, we then show that this planning network is more active when preparing speech as opposed to non-linguistic actions. Finally, we delineate planning-related circuitry during natural conversation that is nearly identical to the network mapped with our interactive tasks, and we find this circuit to be most active before participant speech during unconstrained turn-taking. Therefore, we have identified a speech planning network that is central to natural language generation during social interaction.

Abstract:In this fMRI study we investigated whether language production and understanding recruit the same phoneme-specific networks. We did so by comparing the brain responses to different phoneme categories in minimal pairs: Bilabial-initial words (e.g., monkey) were contrasted to alveolar-initial words (e.g., donkey) in 37 participants performing both language production and comprehension tasks. Region-of-Interest analyses showed that the same sensorimotor networks were activated across the language modalities. In motor regions, word production and comprehension elicited the same phoneme-specific topographical activity patterns, with stronger haemodynamic activations for alveolar-initial words in the tongue cortex and stronger activations for bilabial-initial words in the lip cortex. In the posterior and middle superior temporal cortex, production and comprehension likewise resulted in similar activity patterns, with enhanced activations to alveolar- compared to bilabial-initial words. These results disagree with the classical separation between language production and understanding in neurobiological models of language, and instead advocate for a cortical organization where the same phoneme-specific acoustic-and-articulatory representations carry production and comprehension.

Linguistic signs in action: The neuropragmatics of speech acts

Abstract:What makes human communication exceptional is the ability to grasp speaker's intentions beyond what is said verbally. How the brain processes communicative functions is one of the central concerns of the neurobiology of language and pragmatics. Linguistic-pragmatic theories define these functions as speech acts, and various pragmatic traits characterise them at the levels of propositional content, action sequence structure, related commitments and social aspects. Here I discuss recent neurocognitive studies, which have shown that the use of identical linguistic signs in conveying different communicative functions elicits distinct and ultra-rapid neural responses. Interestingly, cortical areas show differential involvement underlying various pragmatic features related to theory-of-mind, emotion and action for specific speech acts expressed with the same utterances. Drawing on a neurocognitive model, I posit that understanding speech acts involves the expectation of typical partner follow-up actions and that this predictive knowledge is immediately reflected in mind and brain.
Causal role of frontocentral beta oscillation in comprehending linguistic communicative functions

Abstract:Linguistic communication is often considered as an action serving the function of conveying the speaker’s goal to the addressee. Although neuroimaging studies have suggested a role of the motor system in comprehending communicative functions, the underlying mechanism is yet to be specified. Here, by 2 EEG experiments and a tACS experiment, we demonstrate that the frontocentral beta oscillation, which represents action states, plays a crucial part in linguistic communication understanding. Participants read scripts involving 2 interlocutors and rated the interlocutors’ attitudes. Each script included a critical sentence said by the speaker expressing a context-dependent function of either promise, request, or reply to the addressee’s query. These functions were behaviorally discriminated, with higher addressee’s will rating for the promise than for the reply and higher speaker’s will rating for the request than for the reply. EEG multivariate analyses showed that different communicative functions were represented by different patterns of frontocentral beta activity but not by patterns of alpha activity. Further tACS results showed that, relative to alpha tACS and sham stimulation, beta tACS improved the predictability of communicative functions of request or reply, as measured by the speaker’s will rating. These results convergently suggest a causal role of the frontocentral beta activities in comprehending linguistic communications.

Abstract:While human speech comprehension is thought to be an active process that involves top-down predictions, it remains unclear how predictive information is used to prepare for the processing of upcoming speech information. We aimed to identify the neural signatures of the preparatory processing of upcoming speech. Participants selectively attended to one of two competing naturalistic, narrative speech streams, and a temporal response function (TRF) method was applied to derive event-related-like neural responses from electroencephalographic data. The phase responses to the attended speech at the delta band (1-4 Hz) were correlated with the comprehension performance of individual participants, with a latency of - 200-0 ms relative to the onset of speech amplitude envelope fluctuations over the fronto-central and left-lateralized parietal electrodes. The phase responses to the attended speech at the alpha band also correlated with comprehension performance but with a latency of 650-980 ms post-onset over the fronto-central electrodes. Distinct neural signatures were found for the attentional modulation, taking the form of TRF-based amplitude responses at a latency of 240-320 ms post-onset over the left-lateralized fronto-central and occipital electrodes. Our findings reveal how the brain gets prepared to process an upcoming speech in a continuous, naturalistic speech context.
Predictive brain activity shows congruent semantic specificity in language comprehension and production.

Abstract:Sentence fragments strongly predicting a specific subsequent meaningful word elicit larger pre-word slow waves, Prediction Potentials (PP), than unpredictive contexts. To test current predictive processing models, 128-channel EEG data was collected from both sexes to examine whether (i) different semantic PPs are elicited in language comprehension and production, and (ii) whether these PPs originate from the same specific ‘prediction area(s)’ or rather from widely-distributed category-specific neuronal circuits reflecting the meaning of the predicted item. Larger slow waves after predictable than unpredictable contexts were present both before subjects heard the sentence-final word in the comprehension experiment and before they pronounced the sentence-final word in the production experiment. Crucially, cortical sources underlying the semantic PP were distributed across several cortical areas and differed between the semantic categories of the expected words. In both production and comprehension, anticipation of animal words was reflected by sources in posterior visual areas, whereas predictable tool words were preceded by sources in frontocentral sensorimotor cortex. For both modalities, PP size increased with higher cloze probability, thus further confirming that semantic predictions are reflected, and with shorter latencies with which participants completed sentence fragments. These results sit comfortably with theories viewing distributed semantic-category-specific circuits as the mechanistic basis of semantic prediction in the two modalities. Significant statement We report larger anticipatory negative-going Prediction Potentials (PPs) after sentence fragments with predictable than unpredictable endings both during language comprehension and production. In production and comprehension experiments, PP topographies resembled each other but, for each modality, PPs differed in the same way between semantic categories of the predictable words. Likewise, cortical source estimation revealed similar prediction-related cortical activations across modalities but consistent activation differences reflecting the meaning of predicted symbols. Furthermore, PP size was linked with behavioural measures of predictability (Cloze probability) and ease of processing (Reaction Times) and correlated PPs were seen in production and comprehension; these observations are consistent with similar prediction mechanisms across modalities but different ones for semantic types.

Abstract:Communication, especially conversation, is essential for human social life. Many previous studies have examined the neuroscientific underpinnings of conversation, i.e. language comprehension and speech production. However, conversation inherently involves two or more people, and unless two people actually interact with one another, the nature of the conversation cannot be truly revealed. Therefore, in this study, we used two magnetoencephalographs that were connected together, and simultaneously recorded brain activity while two people took turns speaking in a word association/alphabet completion task. We compared the amplitude modulation of the alpha- and beta-band rhythms within each of the 62 brain regions under semantic (word association; less predictable) and non-semantic (alphabet completion; more predictable) conditions. We found that the amplitudes of the rhythms were significantly different between conditions in a wide range of brain regions. Additionally, significant differences were observed in nearly the same group of brain regions after versus before each utterance, indicating that a wide range of brain areas is involved in predicting a conversation partner's next utterance. This result supports the idea that mentalizing, e.g. predicting another person's speech, plays an important role in conversation, and suggests that the neural network implicated in mentalizing extends over a wide range of brain regions.

Abstract:Recent event-related potential (ERP) studies in language comprehension converge in finding anticipatory negativities preceding words or word segments that can be pre-activated based on either sentence contexts or phonological cues. We review these findings from different paradigms in the light of evidence from other cognitive domains in which slow negative potentials have long been associated with anticipatory processes and discuss their potential underlying mechanisms. We propose that this family of anticipatory negativities captures common mechanisms associated with the pre-activation of linguistic information both within words and within sentences. Future studies could utilize these anticipatory negativities in combination with other, well-established ERPs, to simultaneously track prediction-related processes emerging at different time intervals (before and after the perception of pre-activated input) and with distinct time courses (shorter-lived and longer-lived cognitive operations).

Abstract:The present study investigated whether lexical processes that occur when we name objects can also be observed when an interaction partner is naming objects. We compared the behavioral and electrophysiological responses of participants performing a conditional go/no-go picture naming task in two different conditions: individually and jointly with a confederate participant. To obtain an index of lexical processing, we manipulated lexical frequency, so that half of the pictures had corresponding names of high-frequency and the remaining half had names of low-frequency. Color cues determined whether participants should respond, whether their task-partner should respond, or whether nobody should respond. Behavioral and ERP results showed that participants engaged in lexical processing when it was their turn to respond. Crucially, ERP results on no-go trials revealed that participants also engaged in lexical processing when it was their partner's turn to act. In addition, ERP results showed increased response inhibition selectively when it was the partner's turn to act. These findings provide evidence for the claim that listeners generate predictions about speakers' utterances by relying on their own action production system.

Abstract:Self-generated overt actions are preceded by a slow negativity as measured by electroencephalogram, which has been associated with motor preparation. Recent studies have shown that this neural activity is modulated by the predictability of action outcomes. It is unclear whether inner speech is also preceded by a motor-related negativity and influenced by the same factor. In three experiments, we compared the contingent negative variation elicited in a cue paradigm in an active vs. passive condition. In Experiment 1, participants produced an inner phoneme, at which an audible phoneme whose identity was unpredictable was concurrently presented. We found that while passive listening elicited a late contingent negative variation, inner speech production generated a more negative late contingent negative variation. In Experiment 2, the same pattern of results was found when participants were instead asked to overtly vocalize the phoneme. In Experiment 3, the identity of the audible phoneme was made predictable by establishing probabilistic expectations. We observed a smaller late contingent negative variation in the inner speech condition when the identity of the audible phoneme was predictable, but not in the passive condition. These findings suggest that inner speech is associated with motor preparatory activity that may also represent the predicted action-effects of covert actions.
Revealing Spatiotemporal Brain Dynamics Of Speech Production Based On Eeg And Eye Movement

Abstract:To understand the neural circuitry associated with speech production in oral reading, it is essential to describe the whole range spatiotemporal brain dynamics in the processes including visual word recognition, orthography-phonology mapping, semantic accessing, speech planning, articulation, self monitoring, etc. This has turned out to be extremely difficult because of demanding resolution in both spatial and temporal domains and advanced algorithms to eliminate severe contamination by articulatory movements. To tackle this hard target, we recruited 16 subjects in a sentence reading task and measured multimodal signals of electroencephalography (EEG), eye movement, and speech simultaneously. The onset/offset of gazing and utterance were used for segmenting brain activation stages. Cortical modeling of causal interactions among anatomical regions was conducted on EEG signals through (i) independent component analysis (ICA) to identify cortical regions of interest (ROls); (ii) multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) modeling of representative cortical activity from each ROI; and (iii) quantification of the dynamic causal interactions among ROIs using the Short-time direct Directed Transfer function (SdDTF). The resulting brain dynamic model reveals a widely connected bilateral organization with left-lateralized semantic, orthographic and phonological sub-networks, right-lateralized prosody and motor sequencing sub-networks, and bi-lateralized auditory and multisensory integration sub-networks that cooperate along interlaced and paralleled temporal stages for speech processing.
The Same Ultra-Rapid Parallel Brain Dynamics Underpin the Production and Perception of Speech

Abstract:Abstract The temporal dynamics by which linguistic information becomes available is one of the key properties to understand how language is organized in the brain. An unresolved debate between different brain language models is whether words, the building blocks of language, are activated in a sequential or parallel manner. In this study, we approached this issue from a novel perspective by directly comparing the time course of word component activation in speech production versus perception. In an overt object naming task and a passive listening task, we analyzed with mixed linear models at the single-trial level the event-related brain potentials elicited by the same lexico-semantic and phonological word knowledge in the two language modalities. Results revealed that both word components manifested simultaneously as early as 75 ms after stimulus onset in production and perception; differences between the language modalities only became apparent after 300 ms of processing. The data provide evidence for ultra-rapid parallel dynamics of language processing and are interpreted within a neural assembly framework where words recruit the same integrated cell assemblies across production and perception. These word assemblies ignite early on in parallel and only later on reverberate in a behavior-specific manner.
Brain Signatures of Meaning Access in Action Word Recognition

Abstract:Abstract The brain basis of action words may be neuron ensembles binding language-and action-related information that are dispersed over both language-and action-related cortical areas. This predicts fast spreading of neuronal activity from language areas to specific sensorimotor areas when action words semantically related to different parts of the body are being perceived. To test this, fast neurophysiological imaging was applied to reveal spatiotemporal activity patterns elicited by words with different action-related meaning. Spoken words referring to actions involving the face or leg were presented while subjects engaged in a distraction task and their brain activity was recorded using high-density magnetoencephalography. Shortly after the words could be recognized as unique lexical items, objective source localization using minimum norm current estimates revealed activation in superior temporal (130 msec) and inferior frontocentral areas (142-146 msec). Face-word stimuli activated inferior frontocentral areas more strongly than leg words, whereas the reverse was found at superior central sites (170 msec), thus reflecting the cortical somatotopy of motor actions signified by the words. Significant correlations were found between local source strengths in the frontocentral cortex calculated for all participants and their semantic ratings of the stimulus words, thus further establishing a close relationship between word meaning access and neurophysiology. These results show that meaning access in action word recognition is an early automatic process reflected by spatiotemporal signatures of word-evoked activity. Word-related distributed neuronal assemblies with specific cortical topographies can explain the observed spatiotemporal dynamics reflecting word meaning access.

Abstract:Language processing requires the integration of diverse sources of information across multiple levels of processing. A range of psycholinguistic properties have been documented in previous studies as having influence on brain activation during language processing. However, most of those studies have used factorial designs to probe the effect of one or two individual properties using highly controlled stimuli and experimental paradigms. Little is known about the neural correlates of psycholinguistic properties in more naturalistic discourse, especially during language production. The aim of our study is to explore the above issues in a rich fMRI dataset in which participants both listened to recorded passages of discourse and produced their own narrative discourse in response to prompts. Specifically, we measured 13 psycholinguistic properties of the discourse comprehended or produced by the participants, and we used principal components analysis (PCA) to address covariation in these properties and extract a smaller set of latent language characteristics. These latent components indexed vocabulary complexity, sensory-motor and emotional language content, discourse coherence and speech quantity. A parametric approach was adopted to study the effects of these psycholinguistic variables on brain activation during comprehension and production. We found that the pattern of effects across the cortex was somewhat convergent across comprehension and production. However, the degree of convergence varied across language properties, being strongest for the component indexing sensory-motor language content. We report the full, unthresholded effect maps for each psycholinguistic variable, as well as mapping how these effects change along a large-scale cortical gradient of brain function. We believe that our findings provide a valuable starting point for future, confirmatory studies of discourse processing.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The left inferior frontal gyrus (Broca's area) is generally believed to be critical for the motor act of speech. A lesion-based analysis has, however, shown that the left anterior insula is necessary for accurate articulation. We used functional imaging in normal people to show the neural systems involved in speech during different speech tasks.METHODS: 12 normal people underwent positron emission tomography with oxygen-15-labelled water as tracer. We measured cerebral activity while participants performed three different tasks: repetition of heard nouns at different rates; listening to single nouns at different rates; and anticipation of listening or repetition. We analysed the data with imaging software.FINDINGS: Repetition of single words did not activate Broca's area but activity in three left-lateralised regions was seen: the anterior insula, a localised region in the lateral premotor cortex, and the posterior pallidum. The left anterior insula and lateral premotor cortex showed a conjunction of activity for hearing and articulation. In addition, articulation modulated the response to hearing words in the left dorsolateral temporal cortex, the physiological expression of the speaker's auditory attention being directed towards the stimuli and not his or her articulated responses.INTERPRETATION: The formulation of an articulatory plan is a function of the left anterior insula and lateral premotor cortex and not of Broca's area. The left basal ganglia seem to be dominant for speech, although the axial muscles involved receive their motor output from both cerebral hemispheres.

Abstract:Studies of language production in bilinguals have seldom considered the fact that language selection likely involves proactive control. Here, we show that Chinese-English bilinguals actively inhibit the language not-to-be used before the onset of a picture to be named. Depending on the nature of a directive cue, participants named a subsequent picture in their native language, in their second language, or remained silent. The cue elicited a contingent negative variation of event-related brain potentials, greater in amplitude when the cue announced a naming trial as compared to when it announced a silent trial. In addition, the negativity was greater in amplitude when the picture was to be named in English than in Chinese, suggesting that preparation for speech in the second language requires more inhibition than preparation for speech in the native language. This result is the first direct neurophysiological evidence consistent with proactive inhibitory control in bilingual production.

Large-scale replication study reveals a limit on probabilistic prediction in language comprehension. eLife, 7, e33468, 2018] replication of DeLong and colleagues (2015) [DeLong, K. A., Urbach, T. P., & Kutas, M. Probabilistic word pre-activation during language comprehension inferred from electrical brain activity. Nature Neuroscience, 8, 1117–1121, 2005]. Participants (n = 356) viewed sentences containing articles and nouns of varying predictability, while their EEG was recorded. We measured ERPs preceding the critical words (namely, the semantic prediction potential), in conjunction with postword N400 patterns and individual neural metrics. ERP activity was compared with two measures of word predictability: cloze probability and lexical surprisal. In contrast to prior literature, semantic prediction potential amplitudes did not increase as cloze probability increased, suggesting that the component may not reflect prediction during natural language processing. Initial N400 results at the article provided evidence against phonological prediction in language, in line with Nieuwland and colleagues' findings. Strikingly, however, when the surprisal of the prior words in the sentence was included in the analysis, increases in article surprisal were associated with increased N400 amplitudes, consistent with prediction accounts. This relationship between surprisal and N400 amplitude was not observed when the surprisal of the two prior words was low, suggesting that expectation violations at the article may be overlooked under highly predictable conditions. Individual alpha frequency also modulated the relationship between article surprisal and the N400, emphasizing the importance of individual neural factors for prediction. The present study extends upon existing neurocognitive models of language and prediction more generally, by illuminating the flexible and subject-specific nature of predictive processing.

Abstract:Perceptual anticipation is known to impact the reaction time of decisions. While anticipatory patterns have been identified in human brain activity, the single-trial neural signature of anticipation remains unexplored. Similarly, past studies have underlined an effect of pre-stimulus alpha-band activity on reaction times. Still, it remains unknown whether this activity is stimulus-specific or rather acts as a general indicator of readiness. This study aimed to determine whether human participants expected a visual or an auditory stimulus at the single-trial level in both cued and uncued trials. We show that pre-stimulus brain activity entails information about the expected upcoming stimulus, and that the information content can be extracted from single-trial brain activity. Behavioral analyses helped uncover the link between correct anticipation and shifts in decision strategy, and additionally validated the classification of uncued trials. This understanding of single-trial stimulus-specific neural signatures of anticipation can significantly impact cognitive neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and neuroergonomics research, enabling the development of real-time systems capable of predicting and adapting to an individual's anticipated stimuli, thereby enhancing task performance and user experience in diverse applications ranging from adaptive interfaces to clinical interventions.
