Abstract:The movable tooth gear drives are categorized as those with movable tooth on their gear blank. There are two major kinds of movable tooth gear drive, one with local degrees of freedom gear tooth or the positions of the movable teeth relative to the gear blank (carrier) remains unchanged, and the other with revolute joint or sliding gear tooth. The first kind may be considered as an evolution from their predecessor of pin cycloildal gear drives and the second kind from their predecessor of harmonic gear drives. Because there are one or more moving pairs in movable tooth gear drives, the topological constructions can vary greatly. Many research works have been done in China since 1980's and a lot of new mechanisms for the movable constructions are patented [1]. In this paper, we summarized the characteristics of the conceptual developments of movable tooth gear drives and generate the atlas graph for the movable tooth gear drive. Two groups of design components are described in the paper, they are sleeve tooth gear drive, ball cycloid gear drive, sliding tooth gear drive, swing tooth gear drive and variable speed ratio movable tooth gear mechanism.

Abstract:This paper introduces a systematic methodology for the creation and classification of movable tooth gear mechanisms. The approach is partly enumerative and partly analytical. Two kinds of movable tooth gear drives are categorized and the kinematic mechanism structures are sketched and evaluated. The results are helpful in creative design of feasible mechanisms and the dimensional synthesis, kinematic and dynamic analyses, design optimization, and design detailing.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. Rotate Vector (RV) reducer involves multiple crankshafts to drive the cycloidal-pin transmission in parallel, leading to an over-positioning structure and high manufacturing and assembly requirements for the reducer, restricting the development of industrial robots. In view of the above problems, a novel configuration of Abnormal Cycloidal Gear (ACG) reducer with a 2K-H internal meshing planetary transmission is proposed. The design innovatively replaces the multiple crankshafts with a pin mechanism, thereby addressing the over-positioning and simplifying the manufacturing and assembly processes. To improve the performance of the reducer, the "epicycloid-involute-hypocycloid" combined tooth profiles are designed and adopted as the ACG reducer's drive teeth. The configuration principle of the ACG reducer is conducted. Next, a manufacturing method utilizing a rack cutter to generate the profile of drive teeth is presented. Finally, the meshing performance and mechanical behaviors of the designed internal meshing pair for the ACG reducer are evaluated. Results show that ACG reducer has the advantages of a simple structure and large transmission ratio. The combined tooth profiles can be machined at one time using the designed cutter, simplifying the tooth machining process. The internal meshing pair is linear contact and exhibits an obviously multi-teeth meshing effect, which benefits the carrying capacity and transmission performance of the ACG reducer.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 15, Issue 3, March 2023. A precision reducer with a high ratio and a small size is essential for precise control of the position of a robotic arm. The rotate vector (RV) is a reducer widely applied in robotic joints. However, its complex structure, over-positioning and difficult assembly restrict its application industrial robots. Herein, a novel abnormal cycloidal gear (ACG) reducer is proposed. In comparison to the RV reducer, the proposed reducer has the characteristics of compact structure, less over-positioning and high ratio. The compound tooth profile of "epicycloid-involute hypocycloid" is used as the driving teeth for improving the performance of the reducer. The operating principle, mechanism design and reduction ratio of the proposed reducer is investigated, and the design method of the ACG tooth profile is also introduced. A dynamic characteristic model is established to verify the correctness of the design method of the reducer. A prototype of the ACG reducer is fabricated by using the computer numerical control (CNC) machining technology. Results show that the ACG reducer is capable to cover a wide range of reduction ratios with a simple mechanism. The numerical and theoretical results are in agreement, which depict the structural feasibility and correctness of the design method of the reducer. The adaptation of the ACG tooth profile as the driving teeth helps in improving the performance of the reducer.

Abstract:The robot joint is one of the key components of robots. With the wide application of robot joints, the demand for joint torque is becoming higher and higher. However, at present, most high-torque robot joints are generally large in weight and size, which creates problems for some applications. For this purpose, a high-torque and high-torque-density robot joint is proposed. To improve the joints’ torque density, the lightweight motor and reducer with a large reduction ratio are selected, and the mechanical structure design is based on weight reduction, miniaturization, and heat dissipation. The maximum torque of the proposed robot joint can reach up to 182Nm, and its mass is only 1.8kg. Besides, an embedded control system is designed to control the robot joint. Many experiments were conducted to measure the robot joint’s characteristics, such as torque, speed, and control features. And the designed robot joints are successfully applied to a biped robot. The results verify the performance of the designed robot joint and its control system.

Abstract:Due to the involute worm and helical gear drive is different from the parallel shaft helical gear drive and the worm drive, the plane meshing theory and the space enveloping principle cannot be directly applied for this worm drive when the meshing analysis is performed, there has been no good analysis method to accurately calculate the meshing situation. To satisfy the increasing requirements of low-noise and long-lifetime in the service robots and the modern intelligent house systems, especially the intelligent shading system in the modern intelligent house system, a novel meshing performance analysis method is proposed for the involute worm and helical gear drive based on the counterpart rack. By calculating the contact line between the counterpart rack and helical gear and the contact line between the counterpart rack and involute worm, we can get the contact point of involute worm and helical gear finally. This novel meshing performance analysis makes it possible to use the plane meshing theory and the space enveloping principle to analyze involute worm and helical gear drive. The meshing relationship between the involute worm and the counterpart rack, as well as the counterpart rack and the helical gear are presented, and the computational model of contact ratio and contact ellipse are obtained through the counterpart rack. The mathematic model for the instantaneous contact point and contacts trace of the worm drive with different assembly errors is established, and the meshing performances are investigated through the numerical analysis, simulation analysis and performance testing. The results show that this worm drive is insensitively to the assembly errors, and it is beneficial for reducing the vibration-noise and extending the service life. This theoretical research provides theoretical support for further optimizing the vibration and noise of involute worm and helical gear drive and improving the fatigue life.

Abstract:A novel specific type of worm drive, so-called end face engagement worm gear(EFEWD), is originally presented to minimize or overcome the gear backlash. Different factors, including the three different types, contact curves, tooth profile, lubrication angle and the induced normal curvature are taken into account to investigate the meshing characteristics and create the profile of a novel specific type of worm drive through mathematical models and theoretical analysis. The tooth of the worm wheel is very specific with the sine-shaped tooth which is located at the alveolus of the worm and the tooth profile of a worm is generated by the meshing movement of the worm wheel with the sine-shaped tooth, but just the end face of the worm(with three different typical meshing types) is adapted to meshing, and therefore an extraordinary manufacturing methods is used to generate the profile of the end face engagement worm. The research results indicates that the bearing contacts of the generated conjugate hourglass worm gear set are in line contacts, with certain advantages of no-backlash, high precision and high operating efficiency over other gears and gear systems besides the end face engagement worm gear drive may improve bearing contact, reduce the level of transmission errors and lessen the sensitivity to errors of alignment. Also, the end face engagement worm can be easily made with superior meshing and lubrication performance compared with the conventional techniques. In particular, the meshing and lubrication performance of the end face engagement worm gear by using the end face to meshing can be increased over 10% and 7%, respectively. This investigate is expect to provide a new insight on the design of the future no-backlash worm drive for industry.

Abstract:This article proposes a novel linear contact face worm gear drive. The novel face worm gear drive consists of a face worm gear and a cylindrical worm enveloped by a tapered surface. The meshing theory for the novel face worm gear drive is systematically built up. The meshing theory on the base of the reference point is further developed aimed at the worm pair where the indexing surfaces are planar and cylindrical. The design methods of the rough size for the face worm gear are introduced. The computing method for the worm limit axial mounting distance is presented by employing the meshing limit line function. The asymmetry of the tooth surfaces for the worm pair is evaluated using the helix angle at the midpoint on the line of section for the worm gear tooth surface and the tooth profile angle for the worm axial section. Numerical results show that the geometric characteristics and the meshing properties for the tooth surface on both flanks of the novel face worm gear drive are asymmetrical. However, the meshing properties for the novel face worm gear drive are satisfactory.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a novel backlash-adjustable worm drive, and it is composed of a dual-lead involute cylindrical (DIC) worm and an involute helical beveloid (IHB) gear. It is characterized by the low error sensitivity, easy to manufacture and with the backlash-adjustable. The design criteria for the novel worm drive are presented based on a variable-lead and variable-thickness media rack. Then the mathematical model and meshing performance analysis model are deduced and established, and the theory of backlash-adjustable is proposed. The tooth contact analysis (TCA) is conducted by the numerical calculation and stress analysis. Moreover, the experimental gearbox is manufactured, and the contact tests and transmission accuracy tests are completed. These results indicate that the novel worm drive can effectively adjust backlash without affecting the transmission accuracy. This theoretical research provides the theoretical support for further analysis and application of the novel backlash-adjustable worm drive.

Abstract:Compared with other speed reducers, the two-stage cycloidal planetary one also known as RV reducer has higher precision, higher mechanical efficiency, higher loading capacity as well as long service life. These characteristics make it attractive for industrial applications, especially for robotics applications and machine tools, where high precision and large torque transmission are required. The traditional RV reducer uses cycloidal drive which is comprised of the cycloidal wheel and the pins. It has some disadvantages in the pin design, because of small clearance between the pin and the cycloidal wheel, the collision between the pin and the cycloidal wheel may lead to unstable stress in the key parts and output velocity fluctuation. This paper presents an innovative cycloidal planetary reducer using internal meshing principle instead of external meshing between cycloidal wheel and pins in traditional RV reducer. In the new design of the reducer, the internal teeth with cycloidal profile are processed inside the reducer housing, meshing with two pin holders which are placed at the inner side of the cycloidal teeth to achieve transmission. The pin holder is a new integral structure of pins integrated on a round plate. Then a comparison study is conducted through establishment of system dynamics analysis. The transmission characteristics and meshing force of both the new type of reducer and the traditional RV reducer are analyzed under the same condition of reduction ratio. The results show the new reducer improves on these shortcomings, its transmission performance is competitive as compared to traditional RV reducer. What’s even better is that its output speed is more stable, and the contact force between the pin position on the pin holder and the internal cycloidal teeth inside the reducer housing is smaller, as well as the contact frequency is obviously decreased.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of a new type of planetary traction drive bearing-type reducer. In this design, the transmission outer ring is replaced with an elastic ring. The design constructs a circular arc at the axial end of the rolling body's contour line. This ensures that the contact point of this arc with the reducer's outer ring and the inner ring's axial end face is maintained on the radial traction contact line. As a result, it can replace the thrust bearing and provide an axial support function. It has the advantages of simple structure, easy processing, smooth transmission, and low noise. This paper first introduces the design and development process of this bearing-type reducer and presents systematic research on its transmission principle and dynamics. Subsequently, in response to the edge effect phenomenon of the outer ring contact line, the contour line of the outer ring is refined by adopting the shaping method used for bearing rollers, establishing a full circular arc profile shaping method, which significantly improves its edge effect. Finally, in our investigations, combined with experimental tests, a prototype of the bearing-type reducer was fabricated, and the speed ratio, torque, and transmission efficiency of the reducer were studied. The results demonstrate that the bearing-type reducer can achieve high transmission accuracy and efficiency. The transmission performance varies significantly under different lubrication conditions, with the peak efficiency reaching as high as 99.97% when using Santotrac 50 traction oil. The results verify the feasibility of the proposed design method and have the potential to be applied in wheel hub motors and robot joints.

Optimal design for an end face engagement worm gear with multiple worm-wheel meshing

Abstract:To solve the problem for lacking a special mechanical transmission that could provide multiple outputs with high transmission efficiency and good lubrication in the modern industrial, a novel worm gear, named end face engagement worm gear, with multiple worm-wheel meshing is proposed for the first time. The essential parameters for the worm gear are optimized to enhance lubrication and meshing properties. Moreover, analysis of variance(ANOVA) is applied to determine the optimum levels and to determine the influence of parameters. The ANOVA results show that the novel end face engagement worm gear with multiple worm wheels provides high lubrication(the lubrication angle is more than 89°) and meshing performance(the induce normal curvature is less than 0.0002 mm−1). The interaction between center distance and roller slant distance most strongly influences the lubrication angle(contributed 51.6%), followed by the parameters of center distance(contributed 25.0%), roller slant distance(contributed 16.4%), tooth angle of gear, gear ratio, and roller radius. In addition, roller radius most strongly influences the induced normal curvature(contributed 39.4%), followed by roller slant distance(contributed 15.2%), tooth angle of the gear(contributed 9.0%), center distance, and gear ratio. The proposed worm gear helps to enrich the no-backlash high precision worm drive and the optimal design method can provide a useful reference on performance improvement of other worm gear.

Abstract:Due to their advantages of compact size, high reduction ratio, large stiffness and high load capacity, RV reducers have been widely used in industrial robots. The dynamic characteristics of RV reducers in terms of vibratory response and dynamic transmission error have a significant influence on positioning accuracy and service life. However, the current dynamic studies on RV reducers are not extensive and require deeper study. To bridge this gap, a more effective and realistic lumped parameter dynamic model for RV reducers is developed, considering the tooth profile modification of cycloid gears and system errors. Firstly, for an efficient solution, the equivalent pressure angle and equivalent mesh stiffness of the cycloid–pin gear pair are introduced in the dynamic model based on the loaded tooth contact analysis. Secondly, the differential equations of the system are derived by analyzing the relative displacement relationships between each component, which are solved using the Runge–Kutta method. With this, the effects of errors such as machining errors, assembly errors and bearing clearances on the dynamic behaviors and transmission precision are investigated by comparison to quantify or qualify their influence. This research is helpful in characterizing the multi-tooth mesh and dynamic behavior, and revealing the underlying physics of the RV reducer.

Abstract:The authors propose methods of computerized design and analysis of a spiroid worm-gear drive with ground worm based on the following considerations: (1) The theoretical thread surface of the hob is generated by a cone surface. (2) The worm surface is crowned in profile and longitudinal directions in comparison with the hob thread surface. (3) The double crowning of the worm enables to localize the bearing contact and obtain a predesigned parabolic function of transmission errors of an assigned level. Computerized design of the worm-gear drive enables to discover and avoid singularities of the generated worm face-gear surface and pointing of teeth. The meshing and contact of the double-crowned worm and the worm face-gear is simulated to determine the influence of misalignment on the shift of bearing contact and transmission errors. Computer program for numerical solution is developed and applied. A numerical example that illustrates the developed theory is provided.

Abstract:In this paper, a new kind of the anti-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm (ADEHW) with line contact between intersecting axes has been studied by means of the theory of gearing and the space engagement theory for the first time. The engagement equation and tooth profile equation have been derived by applying the theory of gearing. Meanwhile the important factors that impact the performances of the worm were numerical calculated analysis. Based on the developed mathematical model of the Anti-backlash Double-roller Enveloping Hourglass worm, computer graph of the gear set has been designed by applying Pro/Engineering. The study results show that the new kind of Anti-backlash worm gearing has the advantage of big carrying capacity and high efficiency, The most important is that can solve the problem of Anti-backlash on the worm gear.

Computerized Design and Generation of Worm Gear Drives with Stable Bearing Contact and Low Transmission Errors

Abstract:The authors propose a new approach for design and generation of low-noise, stable bearing contact gear drive with cylindrical worm. The approach is based on application of an oversized hob and varied plunging of worm generating tool. It is discovered that without plunging positive transmission errors occur (that are unacceptable for favorable conditions of force transmission). A predesigned parabolic function is provided that is able to absorb transmission errors caused by misalignment and reduce the level of vibrations, especially in the case of application of multi-thread worms. The developed approach is tested by computerized simulation of meshing and contact by the developed computer program. The investigation is accomplished for a worm-gear drive with the Klingelnberg type of the worm that is ground by a circular cone, but the proposed approach may be applied for other types of worm gear drives with cylindrical worms.

Abstract:The new precision transmission system-Anti-backlash roller enveloping hourglass worm gears are now widely employed in many industrial sectors such as robot joint design, packaging production line, and CNC (computer numerical control) machine tools. Therefore, it is of great interest to have knowledge of their corresponding transmission principles that are seldom discussed in the literature. Using the theories of differential geometry and gear meshing, the objective of this paper is to analyze and compare meshing characteristics of anti-backlash single- and double-roller enveloping hourglass worm gears in terms of their transmission principle, engagement equation, induced normal curvature, lubrication angle, autorotation angle, entrainment velocity, helix angle, and distribution of contact curves. The major differences between these two roller enveloping hourglass worms are theoretically investigated in this work. Our results show that the anti-backlash single-roller enveloping hourglass worm (ASEHW) gears provide better performance with respect to gear meshing and transmission than the anti-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm (ADEHW) gears. In addition, compared with the ADEHW gears, the ASEHW gears are easier to fabricate, install, and calibrate. However, the ADEHW gears are more auto-adjustable in eliminating gear backlash. Our study puts forward a theoretical background for futuristic design, application, and promotion of the anti-backlash roller enveloping hourglass worm gears.
