Abstract:Fresh fruits and vegetables are important dietary sources of fibres, minerals and antioxidant compounds. However, post-harvest transportation, storage and processing of horticultural crops are usually accompanied by quality deterioration, leading to the loss of commodity value. Previously used methods of post-harvest preservation may adversely affect quality properties, and have harmful chemical residues. Therefore, some plant endogenous signalling molecules are examined as non-toxic alternatives. Salicylic acid (SA), a natural phenolic acid, was first recognised as a defence-related plant hormone, which provides benefits to post-harvest storability and alleviation of injury for horticultural commodities. In recent years, studies in the application of SA have suggested a critical role in regulating post-harvest quality. In this paper, with a focus on quality control, we review the effects of pre-harvest and post-harvest applications of SA and its combination with other post-harvest technologies on horticultural commodities. Exogenous SA treatment exhibits excellent potential in quality control, which is attributed to (1) delaying fruit ripening, altering pigment composition, alleviating fruit browning; (2) reducing cell wall degrading enzyme activity, maintaining cell membrane properties; (3) reducing fruit aroma loss, improving fruit taste and (4) retaining nutrient content and enhancing antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Fruits containing beneficial nutrients are of significant economic importance. Due to the rapid development of "omic" technologies and strategies, the proteomic approach, in addition to genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics, has attracted the attention of scientists to cover the comprehensive analysis of plant physiology and biology. The implementation of quantitative proteomic approach contributed to elucidating the molecular mechanism underlying fruit development, senescence, physiological disorders, and response to exogenous treatments. During the last decade, the isotope-labeled/label-free proteomic strategies have been applied in fruit science to obtain the near-complete investigations of quantifications and functions of fruit proteomes. Additionally, the recent implementation of mass spectrometry (MS)-based selected/multiple reaction monitoring (SRM/MRM) technology in targeted proteomics introduced the possibility of quantitative follow-up of specific protein targets in hypothesis-driven experiments. This review presents a comprehensive and up-dated overview of the application of proteomics in fruit ripening and development, fruit senescence, fruit physiological disorders, and oxidative stress, as well as the fruit proteomic response to postharvest exogenous treatment. The proteomic technologies and strategies in fruit science are summarized, and the panoramic views of differentially expressed proteins are discussed.

Abstract:The limitations in current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying fruit response to the application of plant growth regulators have increasingly become major challenges in improvement of crop quality. This study aimed to evaluate the response of strawberry to the preharvest application of exogenous cytokinin known as forchlorfenuron (CPPU). Postharvest internal and physiological quality attributes were characterized following storage under different conditions. Hierarchical clustering analysis via a label-free proteomic quantitative approach identified a total of 124 proteins in strawberries across all treatments. The expression profiles of both proteins and genes spanned the ranged role of cytokinin involved in primary and secondary metabolism, stress response, and so on. Eighty-eight proteins and fifty-six proteins were significantly regulated immediately at harvest and after storage, respectively. In general, the glycolysis in strawberry was only regulated by CPPU before storage; in addition to the accelerated photosynthesis and acid metabolism, CPPU application maintained higher capacity of resistance in strawberry to stress stimuli after storage, in comparison to control. Nevertheless, the volatile biosynthesis in strawberry has been suppressed by exogenous CPPU. Novel cytokinin response proteins and processes were identified in addition to the main transcriptomic expression to gain insights into the phytohormone control of fruit postharvest quality.
Natural active products in fruit postharvest preservation: A review

Abstract:Abundantly available plants, animals, and microbes are excellent source of active substance to be used as fruit preservatives to delay postharvest fruit from decay, maintain good quality, and increase the shelf life. Although they are effective and free from toxicological risks, the use of the natural active products in agriculture is still limited due to the high cost of producing, complexity interaction in food matrix, and unacceptance of odor. This review focuses on employing naturally occurring bioactive compounds as an alternative to the synthetic preservatives used in fruit. For this purpose, natural compounds from abundantly available source, such as plants, animals, and microbes, are systematically described for their properties, mechanism of action, and applicability. Different postharvest handling of bioactive compounds and mechanism of their triggered/controlled release properties are discussed, especially with regard to challenge and future directions of these new strategy to preserve fruit in industry. This review offers a fundamental theory and technologies to develop the efficient and safe alternative strategies to synthetic fruits preservatives. Overall, the utilization of natural preservative techniques offers promising opportunities to maintain quality and extend shelf life of fruit, with potential applications in various industries such as vegetables, meat, and processed food.

Abstract:This review discusses the physiological aspects of the ripening of juicy fruits in relation to the problem of extending the shelf life of horticultural products. The achievements of molecular biology in the field of genetic regulation of plant quality formation processes are used. Particular attention is paid to the hormonal regulation of the accumulation of nutrients and biologically active substances in fruits. The role of ARF/IAA and DELLA receptor proteins in the interaction of auxin and GA signalling pathways during the growth of tomato, strawberry, and grape fruits is demonstrated. The involvement of DELLA proteins in integrating the function of other phytohormones – cytokinin, ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids and jasmonic acid – is noted. Evidence is presented for the interaction of cytokinin with auxin and GA in the regulation of early development and fruit size. The combination of transcription factors and epigenetic modifications during fruit development and senescence is considered. The involvement of mechanisms of senescence and loss of fruit shelf life in the absence of external signs is shown. The ripening characteristics of climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits are considered. One of the key regulators of the ripening process in both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits is the MADS domain transcription factor RIPENING INHIBITOR (RIN). The regulation of non-climacteric fruit ripening is reviewed using grape and strawberry as examples. Special attention is paid to growth processes, water exchange, photosynthesis, primary and secondary metabolism of developing and ripening fruits. The formation of integuments and cell walls as a structural basis for the physical properties of products is considered. Promising methods of using regulators of vital processes in the post-harvest period to slow down the fruit senescence are given. Increased knowledge of genetic, hormonal and metabolic networks opens up broad prospects for improving and maintaining the quality of fleshy horticultural products.

Abstract:The applications of salicylic acid (SA) and its derivatives including acetylsalicylate (ASA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) have been widely used to preserve fruit and vegetables. This paper reviewed recent researches on preharvest and postharvest treatment methods of SA and its derivatives and summaried the effectiveness on postharvest physiological processes of fruit. The preharvest spraying is recommended as the optimal method because of its rapid absorption efficiency of salicylates and the less time of postharvest handing time. Applications of SA and its derivatives have been demonstrated to improve the storage quality by decreasing ethylene production and respiration rate, suppressing fruit softening and color change, keeping the sugars, organic acids and aroma, inhibiting chilling injury, promoting pathogen resistance and activating antioxidant system. The comparison of treatment method and physiological analysis in this review can provide deep insight into practical application of SA and its derivatives on storage of fruit and vegetables.

Abstract:Polyamines (PAs) are natural compounds involved in many growth and developmental processes in plants, and, specifically in fruits, play a vital role regulating its development, ripening and senescence processes. Putrescine (PUT), spermine (SPE), and spermidine (SPD) are prominent PAs applied exogenously to extend shelf life of fruits. They also originate endogenously during developmental phases of horticultural crops and simultaneously affect the quality attributes and shelf life. Their anti-ethylene nature is being exploited to enhance the shelf life when exogenously applied on fruits. In growth and development of fruits, PA levels generally fall, which marks the beginning of senescence at postharvest phase. PUT, SPE and SPD treatments are being applied during postharvest phase to prolong the shelf life. They enhance the shelf life of fruits by reducing respiration rate, ethylene release and enhance firmness and quality attributes in fruits. PAs have a mitigating impact on biotic and abiotic stresses including chilling injury (CI) in tropical and sub-tropical fruits. PAs are environment friendly in nature and are biodegradable without showing any negative effect on environment. Biotechnological interventions by using chimeric gene constructs of PA encoding genes has boosted the research to develop transgenic fruits and vegetables which would possess inherent or in situ mechanism of enhanced biosynthesis of PAs at different stages of development and thereby will enhance the shelf life and quality in fruits. Internal and external quality attributes of fruits are improved by modulation of antioxidant system and by strengthening biophysical morphology of fruits by electrostatic interaction between PAs and phospholipids in the cell wall.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds (PCs), flavonoids, non-flavonoids and hybrid phenolics, with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which can be applied to improve the fruit quality at the postharvest phase. Exogenous PCs improve postharvest fruits quality by inhibiting disease, maintaining nutraceutical compounds, delaying senescence, and improving respiratory metabolism and energy status. They attach to targets in cell walls and membranes of fungal, can inhibit the defensive enzyme activity and disturb the synthesis of ergosterol that is the main component of fungal cell membrane. Moreover, they can significantly decrease the reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in fruits as effective ROS scavengers. Therefore, this paper reviewed the classification and the potential mechanism and application of exogenous PCs treatment in controlling diseases, improving fruits quality and regulating metabolism in fruits during storage, and encourages research on more precise physical simulation methods to determine the specific action sites in PCs-fungal-fruits.

Abstract:Key messageThis review contains the regulatory mechanisms of plant hormones in the ripening process of climacteric and non-climacteric fruits, interactions between plant hormones and future research directions.The fruit ripening process involves physiological and biochemical changes such as pigment accumulation, softening, aroma and flavor formation. There is a great difference in the ripening process between climacteric fruits and non-climacteric fruits. The ripening of these two types of fruits is affected by endogenous signals and exogenous environments. Endogenous signaling plant hormones play an important regulatory role in fruit ripening. This paper systematically reviews recent progress in the regulation of plant hormones in fruit ripening, including ethylene, abscisic acid, auxin, jasmonic acid (JA), gibberellin, brassinosteroid (BR), salicylic acid (SA) and melatonin. The role of plant hormones in both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits is discussed, with emphasis on the interaction between ethylene and other adjustment factors. Specifically, the research progress and future research directions of JA, SA and BR in fruit ripening are discussed, and the regulatory network between JA and other signaling molecules remains to be further revealed. This study is meant to expand the understanding of the importance of plant hormones, clarify the hormonal regulation network and provide a basis for targeted manipulation of fruit ripening.

Abstract:Gibberellins (GAs) are plant hormones indispensable in regulating the growth and development of fruits. Recent studies have shown that GAs play important roles in delaying horticultural crop ripening and senescence, enhancing the internal and external quality of horticultural crops and resistance to stress and disease. We reviewed the role of GAs in the postharvest physiology of fruits in recent years. GAs are closely related to their ability to retard fruit senescence. GAs could effectively improve fruit storage quality and significantly increase flesh hardness, reduce respiration intensity, inhibit the release of endogenous ethylene, and effectively inhibit fruit softening and ripening. It can also improve the intrinsic and extrinsic quality of fruit storage by improving fruit shape, regulating color, delaying the reduction of soluble solids, promoting sugar accumulation, and delaying vitamin loss. GAs also play a role in postharvest biotic and abiotic stress resistance. The GA treatment effectively reduces the cold damage index, reduces the production and accumulation of superoxide anion(O2−), improves the antioxidant capacity of fruits, and maintains the integrity of cell membranes during low-temperature storage. Moreover, GAs could effectively control some postharvest fruit diseases. In conclusion, GAs play an important role in the physiological regulation of postharvest fruits and have important application prospects in postharvest fruits.

Abstract:Background: As universal energy currency, intracellular ATP (iATP) shortages in horticultural crops during postharvest stresses and senescence. In addition to function as intracellular energy currency, ATP serves as friendly extracellular signaling molecule (eATP). Scope and approach: Postharvest treatments attenuate stresses, delay senescence and maintain quality in horticultural crops by ensuring sufficient iATP supplying, which was accompanied with lower phospholipase D (PLD) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes activity concomitant with higher antioxidant system activity which along with higher heat shock proteins (HSPs) accumulation resulting in lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation leading to higher membrane unsaturated/saturated fatty acids (unSFA/SFA), higher shikimate and phenylpropanoid pathways activity revealing by higher phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzyme activity leading to higher phenols accumulation, higher endogenous proline and glycine betaine accumulation, higher endogenous polyamines accumulation, and higher pathogenesis (PRs) proteins accumulation, which are crucial for membrane fluidity and integrity maintaining and cell wall fortification. In addition to intracellular energy currency, friendly eATP signaling is crucial for promoting iATP biosynthesis machinery activity and reinforcing defense response by triggering jasmonic and salicylic acids signaling pathways. Also, friendly eATP signaling not only is crucial for regulating stomatal closure which is pivotal for attenuating stresses and delaying senescence in horticultural crops but also is crucial for postharvest biofactories representing high phenols accumulating fresh horticultural crops in response to abiotic stresses which are beneficial for human health. Key findings and conclusions: Ensuring sufficient iATP supplying and friendly eATP signaling would be crucial for attenuating stresses, delaying senescence and maintaining quality in horticultural crops during postharvest life.

Abstract:Fresh horticultural products satisfy the nutritional, and industrial needs of consumers worldwide. However, the lack of understanding of the fruit development process, the accelerated senescence process and the lack of post-harvest technology in some regions, present a threat to the food and economic security of the food agribusiness. Brassinosteroids (BR) are plant hormones involved in the regulation of various physiological processes and have recently proven to be a viable post-harvest technology alternative to regulate the ripening and senescence of fruits and vegetables. In this review, the current state of BR research on fruit growth and development, physicochemical changes during ripening, and biotic-abiotic stress during the post-harvest life of horticultural products is presented. Furthermore, the review encompasses the effect of the application of exogenous BR and its relationship with molecular signaling on the processes mentioned above, including aspects such as methods, moments and BR analogues at the time of application, and the molecular mechanisms involved. This review proposes a basis for research of the physiological aspects of BR regulation in fruits and vegetables during their development and post-harvest period, and also points to a direction for in-depth investigation of the molecular mechanisms.

Abstract:The influence of plant growth regulators, including auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, jasmonates, and salicylic acid, on fruit crop development and quality enhancement. Various stages of fruit crop growth, such as flowering, fruit set, ripening, and post-harvest attributes, are examined through comprehensive experimental approaches. Auxins play a crucial role in regulating fruit size, shape, and development by facilitating cell elongation. Gibberellins control fruit elongation, seed germination, and fruit set. Cytokinins influence fruit expansion, sugar metabolism, and overall quality by promoting cell division and differentiation. Ethylene affects fruit ripening processes, including color change, softening, and flavor development. Abscisic acid influences fruit maturation and dormancy. Brassinosteroids regulate fruit development, including size, ripening, and tolerance to abiotic stress. Jasmonates and salicylic acid, involved in defense responses, have an impact on fruit ripening, quality, and disease resistance. The application of these regulators shows promise in improving fruit quality, nutritional composition, and shelf life. This study aims to provide valuable insights into fruit crop physiology and develop strategies to optimize productivity and quality. It emphasizes the importance of proper regulation and responsible use of plant growth regulators to address environmental, health, and ecological concerns associated with excessive or improper application. Excessive use of PGRs can lead to various physiological issues, adversely affecting fruit crop productivity and quality. DNA diagnosis for hereditary cerebral hemorrhage with amyloidosis (Dutch type)

Abstract:Hereditary cerebral hemorrhage with amyloidosis of the Dutch type (HCHWA-D) is tightly linked to the Alzheimer amyloid precursor protein gene on chromosome 21, which codes for the amyloid beta-protein. A point mutation detected at position 1852 of the amyloid precursor protein gene in four HCHWA-D patients was hypothesized to be the basic defect. This study proves that 22 HCHWA-D patients from three pedigrees all carry this point mutation, whereas the mutation is absent in escapees from the HCHWA-D families as well as in randomly selected Dutch individuals. A mutation-specific oligonucleotide is now available for the confirmation of the HCHWA-D diagnosis. Therefore, presymptomatic testing and prenatal evaluation of individuals at risk in the HCHWA-D families is now feasible.

Abstract:Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is a commercially important horticultural fruit crop worldwide. Kiwifruit contains numerous minerals, vitamins, and dietary phytochemicals, that not only responsible for the flavor but can also serve as adjuncts in the treatment of diabetes, digestive disorders, cardiovascular system, cancer and heart disease. However, fruit quality and shelf life affect consumer's acceptance and production chain. Understanding the methods of fruit storage preservation, as well as their biochemical, physiological, and molecular basis is essential. In recent years, eco-friendly (comprehensive and environmentally friendly) treatments such as hot water, ozone, chitosan, quercetin, and antifungal additive from biocontrol bacteria or yeast have been applied to improve postharvest fruit quality with longer shelf life. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in control measures, applications, and mechanisms related to water loss, chilling injury, and pathogen diseases in postharvest kiwifruit. Further studies should utilize genome editing techniques to enhance postharvest fruit quality and disease resistance through site-directed bio-manipulation of the kiwifruit genome.

Abstract:Strawberry is one of the most favored consumed fresh fruits worldwide. However, the major constraint limiting future sustainable production and sales of strawberries is post-harvest decay. Thus, taking a deep look into the effective preservation measures including pre- and post-harvest techniques to retain freshness and inhibit the pathological spoilage of strawberries in the supply chain is of great significance and necessity. At present, relying solely on post-harvest technology is not enough to fix the aim of strawberry fruit preservation and longer shelf life. On the contrary, pre-harvest treatments could be extend shelf life of strawberry fruit and adapt to the diverse post-harvest environments. This review give the latest pre-harvest treatments, their effects on post-harvest quality and storability of strawberries, and develop the expectation of strawberries pre-harvest methods applicated in the future.

Abstract:Postharvest diseases cause huge postharvest losses of horticultural fresh produce. Cooling and synthetic fungicide are used as traditional postharvest preservation technology. Recently, induced resistance has been thought to be an optional and perhaps alternative preservation technology. 1-methylcyclopropylene (1-MCP) and salicylic acid (SA) are two more common chemical agents used mostly as a preservative for harvested fruit in order to achieve better quality and better taste. Many reports have also proven that 1-MCP and SA could induce postharvest fruit resistance. The purpose of this review is to summarize the role of 1-MCP and SA in postharvest fruit resistance, including the effect of 1-MCP and SA on the induced resistance as well as its involved mechanism; the effects of 1-MCP and SA on firmness, phenolic metabolism, membrane lipid metabolism, and reactive oxygen species in fruit after harvest; and the effects of 1-MCP and SA on disease resistance-related defense enzymes, proteins, signaling synthesis, and signaling pathways as well as the combined effect of 1-MCP and SA on the induced resistance and its mechanism. Meanwhile, we prospect for the future direction of increasing postharvest fruit resistance by 1-MCP and SA in more depth.

Abstract:Strawberry ( Fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) is an important soft fruit crop valued for its nutritional composition. However, its highly perishable nature presents challenges for postharvest maintenance of quality attributes. The fruit's soft texture renders it prone to physiological deterioration and decay during transportation and shelf-life. This study investigated the combination of factors of gibberellic acid hormone (GA), magnetic field (MF) and temperature on the postharvest physiology and shelf-life of strawberry cv. Selva. GA at 0, 50, 100 mg/L, MF at 0, 10, and 20 mT, and temperature at 2, 8, and 20°C were evaluated. The results demonstrated the treatments significantly modulated key physiological processes impacting fruit quality retention. GA and MF upregulated the antioxidant enzymes, catalase and peroxidase, thereby maintaining cellular redox homeostasis against senescence. Concurrently, chlorophyll content in sepal was enhanced while polyphenol oxidase activity, a senescence marker, in fruit pulp was downregulated. Additional physiological parameters including total soluble solids, acidity and pH were stabilized. The integrated application of 100 mg/L GA and 20 mT MF maximized these protective physiological effects at 2°C storage. This elucidates potential synergistic modulation of quality-preserving pathways under combined stimuli. Considering issues with chemical alternatives, the study highlights GA and MF as promising non-toxic elicitors warranting further optimization. Exploitation of their physiological capacities to coordinately enhance stress defenses represents a sustainable approach for strawberry postharvest management.

Noise Analysis and Simulation Method for a Single-Slope ADC With CDS in a CMOS Image Sensor

Abstract:Many mixed-signal circuits are nonlinear time-varying systems whose noise estimation cannot be obtained from the conventional frequency domain noise simulation (FNS). Although the transient noise simulation (TNS) supported by a commercial simulator takes into account nonlinear time-varying characteristics of the circuit, its simulation time is unacceptably long to obtain meaningful noise estimation results. Since the single-slope analog-to-digital converter with correlated double sampling (CDS/SS-ADC) in a CMOS image sensor (CIS) is composed of several operation phases in which the circuit topologies are different from each other, the noise cannot be estimated by the conventional FNS. This paper presents a noise estimation method for the CDS/SS-ADC that uses the FNS results while the transient noise behavior is taken into account. The proposed method provides noise estimation results closer to that of the TNS than the conventional FNS, whereas the simulation time is about the same as that of the FNS.
Melatonin Is a Potential Target for Improving Post-Harvest Preservation of Fruits and Vegetables

Abstract:Melatonin is a ubiquitous molecule distributed in nature and not only plays an important role in animals and humans but also has extensive functions in plants, such as delaying senescence, exerting antioxidant effects, regulating growth and development, and facilitating plant adaption to stress conditions. Endogenous melatonin is widespread in fruits and vegetables and plays prominent roles in the ripening and post-harvest process of fruits and vegetables. Exogenous application of melatonin removes excess reactive oxygen species from post-harvest fruits and vegetables by increasing antioxidant enzymes, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and enzymes related to oxidized protein repair. Moreover, exogenous application of melatonin can increase endogenous melatonin to augment its effects on various physiological processes. Many previous reports have demonstrated that application of exogenous melatonin improves the post-harvest preservation of fruits and vegetables. Although overproduction of melatonin in plants via transgenic approaches could be a potential means for improving the post-harvest preservation of fruits and vegetables, efforts to increase endogenous melatonin in plants are limited. In this review, we summarize the recent progress revealing the role and action mechanisms of melatonin in post-harvest fruits and vegetables and provide future directions for the utilization of melatonin to improve the post-harvest preservation of fruits and vegetables.
