Abstract:The biomass, root morphology and nutrient uptake capacities of 15 species of local wetland plants were investigated in hydroponic culture. The wetland plants were exposed to 38.5mg center dot L-1 of NH[image omitted]-N, 132.8mg center dot L-1 of NO[image omitted]-N and 10mg center dot L-1 of dissolved inorganic P for 28days. Mean total biomass of the 15 species ranged from 1.2 to 21.6gplant-1, with above/below ground ratios (AG:BG) in the range 1.7-5.5. Mean NH[image omitted]-N, NO[image omitted]-N uptake rates ranged from 3.7 to 14.3mgN center dot day-1 (accounting for 8.0-49.4% of the NH[image omitted]-N supply) and 17.8 to 59.4mgN center dot day-1 (17.8-59.6% of the NO[image omitted]-N supply). Mean P uptake rate ranged from 1.71 to 4.61mgP center dot day-1 (24.1-61.5% of the P supply). The N and P concentrations in plant tissues ranged from 28.2 to 606.1mgN center dot plant-1 and 4.1 to 53.1mgP center dot plant-1, with AG:BG ratio in the range 1.7-7.0 and 1.6-4.6, respectively. The accumulation of N and P in plant tissues was both significantly correlated with plant biomass and root surface area. Among the different species, Canna generalis, Typha latifolia, Thalia dealbata and Lythrum salicaria had greater above- and below-ground biomass, larger root surface area, and greater nutrient uptake and storage rates than the other plants. Our results suggest (or indicate) that the selection of plant species suitable for constructed wetlands can be based on plant biomass and root surface area.
Studies on Nitrogen and Phosphorous Removal Efficiency and Spatial Distribution in Constructed Wetland Systems

Abstract:Two lab-scale constructed wetland systems using sands as their substrates,with and without plants(Lythrum salicaria Linn),were used to investigate nitrogen and phosphorous removal efficiency and their distribution in the sys-tems.The mean removal efficiency of NH+4-N,TN,TP in the planted system were 55.02%,45.44%,98.52%,respectively,and 38.08%,33.63%,91.37% in the unplanted system,respectively;the removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in the planted system were higher than that in the unplanted system.Biomass and accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in plants decreased along the transect from the inlet to the outlet in the subsurface of the constructed wetland,the concentration of TP in substrates showed the similar pattern as nitrogen and phosphorus distribution in plants;the results suggested that proper combination of different plant species was helpful for the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency.Analysis of nitrogen and phosphorus removal pathway showed that nitrogen was mainly removed through nitrification/denitrification process and phosphorous through adsorption and sedimentation by substrates;plant uptake amounted for 9.38% and 12.77%,respectively,of the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus loaded into the wetland,plant uptake was also an important pathway for nitrogen and phosphorus removal.
Absorbability of wetland plants on N and P from eutrophic water

Abstract:The absorbability of wetland plants on nitrogen and phosphorus was investigated by means of nutrient solution incubation. The results indicated that mean biomass of wetland plant ranged from 9.31 to 49.53 g/plant (dry weight),and shoot to root ratio ranged from 1.21 to 3.09. The above-ground biomass of Canna indica,Coix lacryma-jobi,Eichhornia crassipes and Phragmites australis was quite high, while Ophiopogon japonicus had the lowest above-ground biomass. The concentration of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) of above-ground tissue ranged from 22.13 to 33.03 (mg/g) and 2.53 to 5.38 mg/g (dry weight),respectively. The amount of nitrogen and phosphorus uptaked by wetland plant ranged from 252.99 to 1279.98 and 23.55 to 251.83 mg/plant,respectively, which was mainly determined by plant biomass. The removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus of wetland plant ranged from 10.91% to 59.32% and 50.13% to 87.26%, respectively. These results showed that Canna indica,Coix lacryma-jobi,Eichhornia crassipes and Phragmites australis had stronger absorbability on nitrogen and phosphorus indicating they are promising plants to purify water and eliminate eutrophication.
Kinetics of Ammonium, Nitrate and Phosphate Uptake by Candidate Plants Used in Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:The constructed/artificial wetland system is a new sewage technique with low cost and less energy consumption for removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater, and the wetland plants have the important functions in the system. In wastewater purification, plants can absorb and utilize the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) directly, and enhance nutrient transformation processes such as nitrification, denitrification, adsorption and desorption. In this study, a series of experiments for investigating the kinetics of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate uptake by 8 candidate wetland plants, such as Carex taliensis Franch, Dracaena sanderiana Virens, Impatiens balsamina, rush (Juncus effusus L.), mulberry (Morus indica L.), wetland rice (Oriza Sativa L.), Salvia plebeia R. Br., and Sesbania cannabina Poir, were carried out under controlled conditions (temperature 25-28, illumination 3000Lux, relative°C humidity 60-70%). The results indicated that the kinetic characteristics of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate uptake by the selected plants could be well illustrated with the Michaelis-Menten equation, and the kinetic parameters (maximum rate and Km value of absorption) could also be calculated using the regression equations. The orders of maximum uptake rate were as follows: Morus indica L.>Carex taliensis Franch>Oriza Sativa L.>Impatiens balsamina>Juncus effusus L.>Sesbania cannabina Poir>Salvia plebeia R. Br.>Dracaena sanderiana for ammonium; Carex taliensis Franch>Oriza Sativa L.>Sesbania cannabina Poir>Juncus effusus L.>Impatiens balsamina>Morus indica L.>Salvia plebeia R. Br.>Dracaena sanderiana for nitrate; Oriza Sativa L.>Juncus effusus L.>Salvia plebeia R. Br.>Dracaena sanderiana>Impatiens balsamina>Morus indica L. Sesbania cannabina Poir>Carex taliensis Franch for phosphate. Sesbania cannabina Poir., Dracaena sanderiana Virens and Salvia plebeia R. Br. had the smallest Km value for ammonium uptake, and Impatiens balsamina, Dracaena sanderiana Virens and Salvia plebeia R. Br. had the smallest Km value for nitrate uptake, Sesbania cannabina Poir., mulberry and Dracaena sanderiana Virens had the smallest Km value for phosphate uptake. According to the kinetic characteristics of N and P uptake, we suggested that plant species with higher maximum uptake rates could be used in the first section for cleaning up wastewater with high nutrient concentrations, and plant species with lower Km values could be used in subsequent sections for cleaning up wastewater with lower nutrient concentrations.
Nitrogen and Phosphorus Uptake of 18 Aquatic Plant Species in Sanyang Wetland

Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus uptake of the aquatic plants is the determining factor in remediation of eutrophic wetland.In this study,the uptake abilities of nitrogen and phosphorus in 18 kinds of aquatic plants were compared.The results indicated that there was significant difference in individual biomass among different aquatic plants.The biomass of Canna generalis and Cortaderia selloana were the highest.The nitrogen contents in plant varied significantly in the aboveground and the underground parts waking 23.52~55.00 g/kg and 14.36~50.50 g/kg,respectively.The nitrogen content in shoot was closely and positively correlated with that in underground part with a correlation coefficiency 0.387.The phosphorus contents were also significantly different among those species.The P contents in the aboveground and the underground were 0.53 to 8.1 g/kg and 0.46 to 6.08 g/kg,respectively.The phosphorus content in the aboveground was also positively correlated with that in the underground part with a correlation coefficiency 0.828.The nitrogen uptake per plant varied from 0.356 to 3.951 g while P per plant varied from 0.014 to 0.324 g.Cortaderia selloana,Canna generalis,Lythrum salicaria had higher nitrogen uptake.Lythrum salicaria had higher phosphorus uptake.It is suggested that Canna generalis,Thalia dealbata,Typha angustifolia,Acorus calamus,Cyperus alternifolius,Cyperus prolifer,Lythrum salicaria,Coix lacrymajobi ware recommendable in the restoration of eutrophic wetland considering their better uptake of N and P and their appearance.
Chemical Oxygen Demand, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Removal by Vegetation of Different Species in Pilot-Scale Subsurface Wetlands

Abstract:To assess the removal characteristics of different wetland plants, gravel-based pilot-scale subsurface wetlands vegetated by monoculture vegetation of Salix babylonica, Phragmites australis, Typha angustata, Zizania latifolia, and Lythrum salicaria with stem densities of 20, 1,010, 135, 105, and 58 stem m(-2) were used to treat artificial sewage characterized by chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) pollution. It was revealed that chemical oxygen demand, TN, and TP removal loads of S. babylonica, P. australis, T. angustata, and Z. latifolia vegetation reached 0.112-0.172, 5.7-7.1, and 0.0674-0.152 g m(-2) day(-1), respectively, accounting for 24.5-37.6%, 34-42%, and 36.1-81.4% of that of the unvegetated control wetland. Moreover, there were exponential relationships between TN removal and evapotranspiration rate in wetlands vegetated by T. angustata, L. salicaria, and S. babylonica, whereas there were linear relationships between TP removal and evapotranspiration rate in wetlands vegetated by P. australis, T. angustata, Z. latifolia, and L. salicaria. After harvest, the N and P standing stocks of all the five kinds of vegetation were only 4.3-9.6 g P m(-2) and 2.2-23.9 g N m(-2) because both the above-ground biomass and the N and P contents of wetland vegetation harvested in late autumn were low.
EFFECTS OF PLANT DIVERSITY ON PLANT BIOMASS AND EFFLUENT NITROGEN REMOVAL IN A CONSTRUCTED WETLAND

Abstract:The short-term effects of plant diversity (number of plant species and species compositions) on aboveground biomass, substrate inorganic nitrogen (N) concentrations, and substrate solution "effluent" N concentrations were studied in a subsurface verticalflow constructed wetland (CW). Results showed that (1) the number of plant species increased aboveground biomass (P< 0.05) but had no effect on the overyielding index D-Max; (2) the species compositions and presence of the very productive species (e.g., C. alternifolius, A. donax) had a positive effect on plant biomass, while negative effects on substrate and substrate solution N concentrations; (3) substrate nitrate and ammonium concentrations negatively responded to the plant diversity (P< 0.05); (4) the plant diversity decreased substrate solution nitrate and ammonium concentrations (P< 0.05), suggesting that plant diversity increased effluent N removal. The results confirmed that plant biomass and N removal were enhanced by plant diversity in a short time span, and plant diversity could be managed to improve the N removal in a CW at the beginning stage (the second year after cultivation) for wastewater treatment.
Variation in Plant Biomass and Nitrogen Removal in Two Wetland Blocks with Species Composition

Abstract:The variation in plant biomass and nitrogen (N) removal capacity with species composition was studied in two constructed wetlands. Findings indicated that increased species compositions had a positive influence on plant biomass and a negative effect on the inorganic N concentrations in substrate and substrate solution (effluent). Elevated N concentrations enhanced the effects of species compositions on plant biomass. The Cyperus alternifolius+ Arundo donax mixture produced the largest plant biomass and the smallest inorganic N concentrations in substrate. The Cyperus alternifolius+ Coix lacryma-jobi +Arundo donax and the Cyperus alternifolius+ Coix lacryma-jobi + Lythrum salicaria +Arundo donax mixtures produced the largest plant biomass under high N condition (146 g N m–2 yr–1). In general, the three- and four-species compositions produced the largest plant biomass and the smallest inorganic N concentrations in substrate and effluent. It suggests that plant mixtures are useful in increasing plant biomass and the wastewater N removal capacity.
Characteristics of Plants in Constructed Wetland Treating Light Eutrophic Water

Abstract:Characteristics of growth and nutrient absorption of the plant species in the constructed wetland were compared. The plant species includes Canna indica, Typha augustifolia, Phragmites australis, Tradescantia reflexa, Saccharum arundinaceum, Lolium perenne and Juncus effusus, which are grown in gravel-bed wetland fed with fishery low eutrophic water. In the middle of July 2002. The total biomass of plant species ranged between 348 to 967 g·m -2 . Of all species, Saccharum arundinaceum is the highest in aboveground biomass, and Lolium perenne is the lowest. The total tissue concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) range from 16.43 to 35.33 and 1.15 to 1.61 mg·g -1 , respectively. The maximum accumulations of N and P are 27.02 g·m -2 and 1.46 g·m -2 , respectively. The plant nutrient accumulation is positively linearly correlated with plant biomass. In addition, the growth characteristics of these plant species and their nutrient uptake and application value were compared and discussed. For the plant species with landscape function, harvest in alternate lines or shifting harvest can remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as remain landscape effect.
Physicochemical and Biological Contribution of Native Macrophytes in the Constructed Wetlands to Treat Municipal Wastewater: A Pilot-Scale Experiment in a Sub-Tropical Climate Region

Abstract:In this study, the physicochemical and biological contributions of different macrophytes in horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) to treat low-strength municipal wastewater operated at high hydraulic loads under a sub-tropical climatic region is investigated. Out of the four identical beds, three were planted with locally available macrophytes (P. australis, Sagittaria, and Iris), whereas one bed was kept as a control. The beds were filled with media and operated in parallel continuously for eight months, with increasing the surface loading rate (SLR) from 0.19 to 2.78 m day−1. The results indicate that the planted beds performed significantly (p Sagittaria (0.0061 day−1) > Iris (0.0059 day−1). When compared to the performances of the species used, Sagittaria and P. australis produced better results than Iris. The investigations on biomass showed that Sagittaria yielded higher production, followed by P. australis and Iris. The proportions of uptake by the macrophytes were found to be 9.3%, 6.3%, and 3.9% of mass N removal, and 7.6%, 5.1%, and 4.4% of mass p removal in Sagittaria, P. australis, and Iris, respectively. This study contributes to the effective response to the environment, which validates a major role of macrophytes and their disparate response to pollutant removal processes by different species from municipal wastewater through HSSF-CWs.
Should young adults with sore throat be treated with antibiotics?

Abstract:The diagnosis of streptococcal sore throat on clinical grounds remains a problem. In this study the clinical prediction in a group of young adults corresponded with laboratory findings indicative of a streptococcal (group A or non-A) infection in 23% of cases. The culture of throat swabs was of little value, as the only group A culture-positive patient did not show an antibody response, indicating a carrier state. In 5 cases a streptococcal infection was diagnosed on rising antibody titres only, as culture remained negative. The value of rising antibody titres as a diagnostic tool is also questioned, since they occurred more frequently in the healthy controls than in the sore-throat group. Antibiotic treatment for sore throat was rarely supported by laboratory findings in the young adult population studied.
Vegetation contribution on phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Constructed wetlands have been proven as efficient natural-like technologies to treat different wastewater types. However, phosphorus (P) removal with these systems is still a challenge due to their low performance. This study aims to compare, in microcosm subsurface flow constructed wetland system, the PO4-P apparent balance of five macrophytes (Carex elata All., Juncus effusus L., Phalaris arundinacea L. var. picta, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin., and Typha latifolia L.) and an unvegetated control to evaluate plants' contribution in P removal. Compared with unvegetated systems, plant presence increased the PO4-P removal between 5.4% (P. arundinacea) and 9.4% (C. elata). Only T. latifolia was able to remove more than the PO4-P load (13.05 g m−2) whereas the removal reached 86.2%, 48.1%, 37.6% and 36.0% for P. aundinacea, C. elata, J. effusus and P. australis, respectively. Considering the total P load (51 g m−2), its removal from wastewater reached the highest value with T. latifolia (21.8% of inlet quantity) whereas the other species had an average removal value of 6.5%. The biennial study indicates: 1) T. latifolia as the best solution to remove PO4-P from the wastewater being able to remove more than PO4-P load (1.5 times); 2) P. aundinacea as other possible choice able to remove about 86% of PO4-P load.

Sustainable growth and nutrient uptake of plants in a subtropical constructed wetland in Southeast China

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach for continuous plant growth year-round without time gaps in a constructed wetland (CW). Two plant species were chosen for this purpose, Coix lacryma-jobi, belonging to the warm season functional group, and Lolium perenne, belonging to the cold season functional group. A vertical/ reverse-vertical flow CW was built to treat the eutrophic creek water. Growth traits and the effects of harvesting on biomass and nutrient removal of the both species were examined. Results showed that (4) concerning the nutrient removal effect, L. perenne should be harvested in mid-May with a harvesting frequency of two events per year, while C lacryma-jobi should be harvested in late August and subsequently one more times per year in subtropical regions; (2) during the rapid growth stage of L perenne, the absorbed N and P accounted for approximately 21.3% and 9.1 %, respectively, of the entire CW while the absorbed N and P by C. lacryma-jobi accounted for approximately 31.8% and 33.2%, respectively, during the growth stage.
Recurrence Rate of Idiopathic Sudden Low-Tone Sensorineural Hearing Loss Without Vertigo: A Long-Term Follow-Up Study

Abstract:Objective: Among the types of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, low-tone type without vertigo has attracted attention for its recurrence and progression to Ménière's disease. The purpose of this article is to characterize the recurrent type of sudden low-tone sensorineural hearing loss without vertigo using neuro-otologic examination. Study Design: Retrospective. Setting: Tertiary referral center. Interventions: Diagnostic and prognostic. Methods: Long-term follow-up of 82 patients diagnosed at the university hospital with idiopathic sudden low-tone sensorineural hearing loss without vertigo. The recurrence rate was determined according to results of electronystagmography (ENG) and electrocochleography (ECochG) tests at the onset of the first episode of hearing loss. Results: Forty percent of the patients experienced recurrent hearing loss. Among the patients who experienced recurrence, 45% had a recurrence within 6 months from the first episode of hearing loss. The recurrence rate varied largely according to the results of the ENG and ECochG tests. In patients with an elevated ratio of the summating potential to the action potential and spontaneous nystagmus on ENG, the recurrence rate was 78.6%. However, in those with a normal ratio of the summating potential to the action potential and without spontaneous nystagmus, the recurrence rate was 31.8%. Conclusion: Our results indicate that idiopathic sudden low-tone sensorineural hearing loss without vertigo has a high recurrence rate when vestibular alteration and endolymphatic hydrops are detected on initial examination. A combination of nystagmus detection and ECochG test well characterizes the pathophysiology of sudden low-tone sensorineural hearing loss without vertigo.
Effect of Different Plant Species on Nutrient Removal and Rhizospheric Microorganisms Distribution in Horizontal-Flow Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:Three macrophyte species, Phragmites australis, Arundo donax L., and Typha latifolia L. have been separately grown in a horizontal-flow (HF) constructed wetland (CW) fed with domestic wastewater to investigate effects of plant species on nutrient removal and rhizospheric microorganisms. All the three mesocosms have been in operation for eight months under the loading rates of 1.14gNm(-2)d(-1) and 0.014gPm(-2)d(-1). Appropriately 34-43% phosphorus (P) was removed in HF CWs, and no distinct difference was found among the plants. In the growing season, A. donax L. removed 31.19gm(-2) of nitrogen (N), followed by P. australis (29.96gm(-2)), both of which were significantly higher than T. latifolia L. (7.21gm(-2)). Depending on the species, plants absorbed 1.73-7.15% of the overall N, and 0.06-0.56% of the P input. At least 10 common dominant microorganisms were found in the rhizosphere of all the three plants, and 6 of the 10 kinds of bacteria had close relationship with denitrifying bacteria, implying that denitrifiers were dominant microorganism distributed in rhizosphere of wetland plants.
Nitrogen and phosphorus removal by wetland mesocosms subjected to different hydroperiods

Abstract:The effect of hydroperiod on nutrient removal efficiency from simulated wastewater was investigated in replicate wetland mesocosms (area, 2 m2, planted with Scirpus californicus). Alternate draining and flooding of sediments (pulsed discharge) increased nutrient removal efficiency compared to the continuous-flow “control”. Average PO43− removal efficiency was 20–30% higher in wetland mesocosms that drained twice daily compared to the control. Inorganic N removal efficiency was less affected than phosphate removal by hydroperiod variation. At the higher NH4+ loading rate (1.83 g N m−2 day−1), inorganic N removal efficiency was consistently 5–20% higher in pulsed-discharge wetland mesocosms than in the control. At the lower NH4+ loading rate (0.9 g N m −2 day −1), pulsed-discharge hydrology had no effect on inorganic N removal efficiency. Twice-daily drainage exhibited average inorganic N removal efficiencies of 96% (lower N loading rate) and 87% (higher N loading) and average phosphate removal efficiencies of 81% (lower P loading) and 90% (higher P loading). Mass balance data from the continuous-flow treatment revealed that the aquatic macrophyte Scirpus californicus was the most important nutrient sink, assimilating 50% of the NH4+ and PO43− supply. The high plant productivity in the mesocosms (15.6 kg m−2 year−1) occurred under conditions of high light (high edge per mesocosm area) and high root contact with nutrient-rich influent (shallow, sandy substrate) and may overestimate plant uptake in larger wetlands. The addition of a nitrification-inhibitor (N-Serve) indicated that 34% of the NH4+ supply was transformed to NO3− by nitrifying bacteria.

Abstract:Two horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands, one planted with Iris pseudacorus (HF1) and the other with Phragmites australis (HF2), were built to treat aquaculture wastewater. Pollutants removal, especially the nitrogen removal efficiency, as well as the activities, metabolism, and functional diversities of the microbial communities involved were evaluated under different conditions. NO3--N was removed in HF1 in all seasons, while it accumulated during autumn and winter in HF2. HF2 was more efficient at removing NH4+-N than HF1 in spring and summer when HRT was above 2 d. Nitrification intensity was higher in HF2, while denitrification intensity was higher in HF1. Biolog-ECO indicated that microbial diversity was higher in HF1 than in HF2, and the structure of the microbial community was more different at the back end and in the lower layer than at other places. These results were further confirmed by qPCR and 454-pyrosequencing. The relative abundances of Nitrospira were highest in back end of the upper layer in HF2, while Denitratisoma, which involves in denitrification, was mainly found in the lower layer of HF1. The results illustrated that the radial oxygen loss from P. australis and root exudates of I. pseudacorus could have an impact on the nitrogen removal efficiency by influencing the development of microbial communities. Abstract:To determine if Vietnam theater veterans were more likely than controls to have a specific psychiatric disorder other than posttraumatic stress disorder, the rates of specific psychiatric disorders were estimated using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for national samples of veterans who served in Vietnam, other veterans of the Vietnam era, and matched civilian controls. Overall, there were few differences in rates of disorder between theater and other veterans; there were somewhat more differences between theater veterans and civilians. There were striking differences, however, in rates for most disorders, both lifetime and current, between male theater veterans with high levels of exposure to war zone stress and other male veterans or civilians. Female veterans exposed to high levels of war zone stress also had higher rates than other female respondents for several disorders.

Abstract:Four wetlands established in abandoned ricefields and dominated by Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and Scirpus lacustris were used to improve the quality of agricultural runoff in the Ebro Delta (NE Spain) in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The wetlands were continuously flooded with water from a ricefield irrigation network during the growing season and received water with between 5 and 200 mg N m−2 d−1 in the form of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), between 0 and 67 mg N m−2 d−1 in the form of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and between 1.2 and 225 μg M−2 d−1 in the form of particulate nitrogen (PN). Surface N outflows contained between 0 and 12 mg N m−2 d−1 of DIN, between 1 and 86 mg N m−2 d−1 of DON and between 1 and 40 μg m−2 d−1 of PN. The nitrogen retention efficiency was always positive 100% of the input, except for DON and PN at low inlet loadings. The emergent macrophytes accumulated between 20 and 100 mg N m−2 d−1, which accounted for between 66 and 100% of the inflowing DIN. The removal rate constants calculated according to first-order plug-flow kinetics, were between 0.003–0.09 m day−1 for total nitrogen, and 0.005–0.3 m day−1 for DIN. Plant uptake, detritus accumulation and decomposition, and nitrogen recycling in the sediment are the major processes which could explain nitrogen retention in the wetlands. Wetlands restored from ricefields act as highly efficient water polishing filters for agricultural runoff and, at the same time, can contribute to the habitat biodiversity of large areas where rice is cultivated extensively.

Abstract:Urban and industrial wastewater discharges remain a major source of pollution worldwide. Urban runoff, storm water overflows, and untreated sewage discharges are increasingly important sources of pollution. Systems of wastewater purification by aquatic plants function as biological assimilators by eliminating both biodegradable and non-biodegradable compounds as well as nutrients and metals. Developed technologies promote the pollutants elimination by taking advantage of root systems' adaptability to high pollutant loads and substrate conditions of anoxia or hypoxia, resulting in symbiotic connection between microorganisms and roots. The study aims to highlight the potentialities of filters planted with three species of macrophytes ( Phragmites australis , Typha latifolia , and Cyperus papyrus ), assessing their abilities to remove contaminants from wastewater; also, to calculate bioaccumulation (BAF) and translocation (TF) factors. The obtained results indicate a significant removal ability of nitrites (94%) and phosphorus (98%) from urban wastewater in addition to heavy metals (lead with 97%, zinc with 95%, and copper with 96%) from industrial wastewater. BAF and TF values indicate important heavy metals accumulation and translocation between plants' organs. The research confirms the interest of planted filters use for the wastewater treatment as well as the phytoremediation had a promising prospect for the environmental decontamination and preservation.
