Abstract:The use of natural systems such as wetlands constructed in the treatment of wastewater has become increasingly important due the ability of these systems to remove large amounts of macronutrients and microorganisms and to promote the degradation of organic matter. Given this background, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of an experimental constructed wetland horizontal flow system subsurface cultivated with Zantedeschia aethiopica filled with sand and gravel substrates. The parameters were evaluated by the characterization of physicochemical and microbiological indicators of wastewater from the septic tank of the State University of Goiás in Anápolis city, Goiás, Brazil. The reductions of macronutrients ranged from 57.9 to 94.7%, and 87.0 to 91.0% for organic matter. In addition, a significant reduction in coliform levels in wastewater was observed after wetland treatment. It was concluded that the constructed wetland system could be proposed to treat wastewater from septic tanks at both secondary and tertiary levels, due to its high percentage efficiency in the removal of organic matter and macronutrients. The results obtained demonstrated the applicability of the studied system to be used as a versatile, sustainable, and economical treatment of effluents complementary to the septic tank treatment system.

Abstract:The present study was undertaken in a constructed wetland (CW), setup in a tourism house, for domestic wastewater treatment. The influence of season variations on the abundance of fecal indicator organisms (total coliforms and Escherichia coli) in the wastewater and in the substrate and the roots of plants inhabiting the inlet and outlet zones of the CW was evaluated along three consecutive years. The structure and diversity of bacterial communities associated to the CW’s substrate of inlet and outlet zones was also analyzed overtime. Wastewater was characterized for physicochemical and microbiological parameters and the bacterial communities colonizing the substrate surface, were analyzed by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE). The CW was effective in removing COD, BOD5, TSS, PO43−, NH4+, NO3−, and NO2−. It was also effective in removing fecal indicators, with a generalized decrease of total coliforms and E. coli in the substrate and in the wastewater from inlet to outlet of up to 2–3 log. The structure and composition of bacterial communities associated with the substrate was mainly influenced by the year rather than by the season or the CW zone.

Abstract:This work presents a bibliographic review of the literature regarding the simultaneous removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and disinfection in domestic wastewater matrices. These two responses are usually evaluated independently, as most attention has been centered on the discussion over the removal of CECs in the last 10 years. However, the simultaneous removal of CECs and pathogens from wastewater has been recently brought to the spotlight, especially considering the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Aiming at a reproducible and nonbiased methodology, a combination of the construction of a bibliometric portfolio with systemic analysis was performed with peer-reviewed manuscripts published between 2008 and 2019 in five distinct databases. Several keyword combinations were necessary to achieve a relevant portfolio according to strict criteria. As a result, five highly cited papers and authors were selected. Among the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) explored for simultaneous removal of CECs and disinfection in these papers, detailed results have been elucidated mainly for ozonation. Thus, revealing the broad range of questions that have yet to be investigated in depth for new technologies such as irradiated solar processes. In addition, there is a lack of information associated with simultaneous assessment of CEC removal and disinfection in real samples and in wastewater matrices originated from different secondary treatment technologies in diverse locations.

Abstract:Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 μg/ L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%–96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%–99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased intl1, tetA, tetW , sul1 and qnrS gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, qnrS gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for Streptococcus and Clostridium, respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination.

Abstract:Microbiological investigations into the occurrence and fate of pathogens in wastewater were carried out in a multi-annual measurement programme, using samples from three artificial wetlands equipped with pre-treatment systems (multi-chamber septic tanks, lagoons) and predominantly treating domestic wastewater. In this study, the concentrations of indicator organisms and pathogenic or potentially pathogenic microorganisms were determined in the various components or stages of the systems. The evaluation of data from some 3.600 microbiological analyses and a comparison with older data from a plant which has already been operation for 18 y made it possible for the first time ever to include operational factors in the assessment. Average removal of all major indicator organisms and pathogens is 1.5-2.5 log units for one-stage systems and increases to 3-5 log units for multi-stage systems. Significant differences between horizontal and vertical filters were not found. If no clogging problems arise during their operation, multi-stage systems can meet the requirements of the EU bathing water and irrigation water directives. Influent concentration, wastewater temperature, and hydraulic loading rate were found to be major factors of influence. The performance of constructed wetlands in removing microorganisms is clearly superior to that of conventional biological activated sludge systems.

Abstract:A diagnostic for assessing the quality of a fold has been developed to which further criteria can be progressively added. The goal is to create a measure that can follow the status of a protein structure in a simulation or modeling process, when the answer (the experimental structure) is not known in advance, rather than simply reject deliberate misfolds. This places greater emphasis on the need to study, and calibrate against, marginal cases, i.e., unusual native structures, incomplete structures, partially erroneous X-ray structures, good models, poor models, and the effect of cofactors. The first three terms introduced in the diagnostic are appropriate core-forming properties or noncore properties of residues in relation to tertiary structure, appropriate neighboring structure density for each residue in relation to tertiary structure, and secondary structure consistency. While the method emerges as a useful simulation analysis tool, we find a need for further fine-tuning to diminish sensitivity to minor conformational changes that retain essential features of the fold, balanced against the need to obtain a more sensitive response when a conformational change involves less physically meaningful interatomic interactions. This dual utility is difficult to obtain: the investigation highlights some of the issues. Initial attempts to obtain it have led to terms in the diagnostic that are admittedly complex: simplifications must also be explored.
Toxicity evaluation of hospital laundry wastewaters treated by microbial fuel cells and constructed wetlands

Abstract:Hospital laundries generate high wastewater volumes with the presence of several contaminants. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the toxicity of these effluents and looked for treatment alternatives that might reduce this eventual toxicity. So, the present study assessed the performance of an integrated system combining a microbial fuel cell (MBFC) and a constructed wetland (CW) to reduce toxic effects of wastewaters generated at a hospital laundry. After collection, raw effluents remained 7 days at the first unit (MBFC) of integrated system. Afterward, they were transferred to the second unit (CW) unit where remained more 7 days totaling a hydraulic detention time of 14 days. The toxicity evaluation involved three different organisms: Daphnia magna (acute ecotoxicity), Lactuca sativa (phytotoxicity) and Allium cepa (phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and genotoxicity). Got results revealed an extremely acute ecotoxicity against D. magna, high phytotoxic effects in the L. sativa and A. cepa assays, and genotoxicity in the A. cepa assay for the untreated effluents. Furthermore, no significant incidence of micronuclei was observed in the raw wastewaters. Regarding the treatment, after the first stage, it was possible to verify that MBFC reduced the toxicity of the wastewaters only in some tested assays (endpoints) while after the CW (second stage) the effluents presented a complete absence of toxicity of the investigated bioassays. Therefore, the use of the integrated system combining two environmentally friendly technologies can be considered promising, since both MBFC and CW presented a complimentary effect with excellent results regarding the reduction of the overall toxicity of hospital laundry wastewaters.
Reduction of pathogens in greywater with biological and sustainable treatments selected through a multicriteria approach

Abstract:Non-potable reuse of greywater (GW) can represent a valid alternative to freshwater consumption, satisfying the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by United Nations. The Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) was applied to select the most suitable processes for the reduction of microbiological contamination in GW. A pilot plant, including horizontal flow constructed wetland (CW) and anaerobic filtration (AF) in parallel, best treatment options according to MCA results, was built to treat GW collected from a Venezuelan family. (i) The removal efficiency of microbiological parameters, and (ii) the turbidity as possible microbiological contamination indicator and possible influence factor of disinfection treatment, were investigated. Except for Escherichia coli (4.1 ± 0.9 log reduction with AF), CW achieved the best reductions yields for total coliforms, faecal coliforms, and Salmonella, respectively equal to 3.1 ± 0.5 log, 4.3 ± 0.5 log, and 2.9 ± 0.4 log. In accordance with Venezuelan legislation and WHO guidelines, GW treated with CW was found to be suitable for irrigation reuse for non-edible crops. However, the reduction of pathogens by CW should be considered as a preliminary and not complete disinfection treatment. To reuse GW, especially in the irrigation of edible crops, stronger disinfection treatment should be considered as a complement to the preliminary disinfection performed by CW, to avoid any kind of risk. No significant correlation was found for turbidity either as a possible predictor of microbiological contamination or as an influence on biological disinfection.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to verify the relationships between environmental conditions and microbial processes along a raw-light greywater flow in an improved constructed wetland (CW) system. Physicochemical analysis and high-throughput DNA sequencing were performed in the different zones to investigate the environmental conditions and microbial communities. The results showed that the system operated predominantly under anaerobic conditions, with redox potential (Eh) increasing from the inlet (−342.9 mV) to the outlet (−316.4 mV). Conversely, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) decreased along the greywater flow, suggesting negative correlation between these characteristics. The zones of the evapotranspiration and treatment tank (CEvaT) were characterized by lower community diversity and richness and by the presence of specific groups: Proteobacteria and Synergistetes related to the first steps of the conversion of organic carbon, in the bottom layer inside the anaerobic chamber (AnC); methanogens (Methanosaeta and Methanobacterium) and sulphate-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio, Desulforhabdus and Desulfomonile) in the middle layer; and microorganisms associated with the nitrogen cycle and oxygen release (Acinetobacter, Novosphingobium, Candidatus Nitrososphaera) in the top layer. On the other hand, the increase of the ORP and decrease of organic matter concentrations were associated with higher community diversity and richness in the middle layer of the CW, which showed higher abundance of microorganisms involved in methane (Methylobacterium and Candidatus Koribacter) and sulphur (Rhodoblastus and Thiobacillus) oxidation.

Abstract:Urban wastewater is a significant by-product of human activities. Conventional urban wastewater treatment plants have limitations in their treatment, mainly concerning the low removal efficiency of conventional and emerging contaminants. Discharged wastewater also contains harmful microorganisms, posing risks to public health, especially by spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. Therefore, this study assesses the potential of a native microalgae-bacteria system (MBS) for urban wastewater bioremediation and disinfection, targeting NH4+-N and PO43−-P removal, coliform reduction, and antibiotic resistance gene mitigation. The MBS showed promising results, including a high specific growth rate (0.651 ± 0.155 d−1) and a significant average removal rate of NH4+-N and PO43−-P (9.05 ± 1.24 mg L−1 d−1 and 0.79 ± 0.06 mg L−1 d−1, respectively). Microalgae-induced pH increase rapidly reduces coliforms (r > 0.9), including Escherichia coli, within 3 to 6 days. Notably, the prevalence of intI1 and the antibiotic resistance genes sul1 and blaTEM are significantly diminished, presenting the MBS as a sustainable approach for tertiary wastewater treatment to combat eutrophication and reduce waterborne disease risks and antibiotic resistance spread.

Abstract:This study aimed at quantifying the concentration and removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) employing different advanced treatment systems [biological aerated filter, constructed wetland, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection]. The concentrations of tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetW, sulI, sulII, intI1, and 16S rDNA genes were examined in wastewater and biosolid samples. In municipal WWTPs, ARG reductions of 1-3 orders of magnitude were observed, and no difference was found among the three municipal WWTPs with different treatment processes (p > 0.05). In advanced treatment systems, 1-3 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in constructed wetlands, 0.6-1.2 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in the biological aerated filter, but no apparent decrease by UV disinfection was observed. A significant difference was found between constructed wetlands and biological filter (p < 0.05) and between constructed wetlands and UV disinfection (p < 0.05). In the constructed wetlands, significant correlations were observed in the removal of ARGs and 16S rDNA genes (R(2) = 0.391-0.866; p < 0.05). Constructed wetlands not only have the comparable ARG removal values with WWTP (p > 0.05) but also have the advantage in ARG relative abundance removal, and it should be given priority to be an advanced treatment system for further ARG attenuation from WWTP.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To present the morphology of the extremities, craniofacial structures, and the oral cavity based on roentgencephalometry and three-dimensional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scanning in a patient with hypoglossia-hypodactylia syndrome, discuss the orthodontic treatment method, and review the literature for the syndrome. PATIENT The patient was a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with hypoglossia-hypodactylia syndrome at birth. He had hypodactylia as well as micrognathia with steep inclination of the anterior surface of the mandible in relation to the lower mandibular plane. He had missing mandibular incisors with concomitant bone defect limited to the associated alveolar ridge and an absence of any malformations in the mandibular ramus and condylar head. The patient had a bilateral scissors bite with an extremely constricted mandibular dental arch, skeletal Class II jaw relationship with an average mandibular plane angle and maxillary incisors inclined palatally. He had extremely reduced tongue size and hypertrophy of the floor of the mouth. Anomalies of the central nervous system were not observed. There was no evidence of hearing loss.
Microbiological Analysis of Two Deep Constructed Wetlands with Special Emphasis on the Removal of Pathogens and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Abstract:With the global concern on the role of wastewater treatment technologies in manifesting the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), it has now become imperative to analyze the emerging technologies for handling them. This study assesses the efficiency of two deep constructed wetlands (CWs) receiving partially treated sewage from a residential complex and a hospital designed for the removal of organics and pathogens. These systems were further analyzed for the presence of major ARB to identify the role of CWs in mitigating antibiotic resistance among microbial communities. The bacterial community responsible for metabolic conversions was analyzed by metagenomic sequencing. Finally, the efficiencies of deep CWs were analyzed for the removal of specific bacteria resistant to three antibiotics—piperacillin, colistin (polymixin E), and cefoperazone. The overall removal of extended spectrum beta lactamase producers and carbapenemase producers was also studied. Our results indicate that CWs offer decent BOD and COD removal efficiencies of 74.04–78.71% and 53.85–64.37% respectively. However, a zero-order reaction between loading rate and removal rate was obtained after loading rate of 170 g/m<sup>2</sup>.day indicating the organic loading capacity of the system. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence of bacteria with diverse metabolic potentials for substrate conversion. Removal of fecal coliforms was high in the CWs, but the most interesting observation was the attenuation in ARB, which was found to be comparable to, or even better, than the reported values from conventional moving bed bioreactor. This observation may be attributed to the high retention times offered by CWs compared to that of conventional systems making them an attractive future alternative for treating domestic as well as hospital sewage for emerging pollutants.

Abstract:Decentralised wastewater treatment is becoming a suitable strategy to reduce cost and environmental impact. In this research, the performance of two technologies treating black water (BW) and grey water (GW) fractions of urban sewage is carried out in a decentralised treatment of the wastewater produced in three office buildings. An Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) treating BW and a Hybrid preanoxic Membrane Bioreactor (H-MBR) containing small plastic carrier elements, treating GW were operated at pilot scale. Their potential on reducing the release of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) such as Organic Micropollutants (OMPs), Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) and pathogens was studied. After 226 d of operation, a stable operation was achieved in both systems: the AnMBR removed 92.4 ± 2.5 % of influent COD, and H-MBR removed 89.7 ± 3.5 %. Regarding OMPs, the profile of compounds differed between BW and GW, being BW the matrix with more compounds detected at higher concentrations (up to μg L −1 ). For example, in the case of ibuprofen the concentrations in BW were 23.63 ± 3.97 μg L −1 , 3 orders of magnitude higher than those detected in GW. The most abundant ARGs were sulfonamide resistant genes ( sul1) and integron class 1 ( intl1) in both BW and GW. Pathogenic bacteria counts were reduced between 1 and 3 log units in the AnMBR. Bacterial loads in GW were much lower than in BW, being no bacterial re-growth observed for the GW effluents after treatment in the H-MBR. None of the selected enteric viruses was detected in GW treatment line.

Abstract:Water shortage is a current problem faced by many regions. The deterioration of water bodies driven by the directly discard of untreated wastewater worsens the water shortage and implies in more costly treatments to meet local standards for water quality. In rural areas, the problem is even worse, once conventional centralized treatment plants do not encompass them. Decentralized treatment systems must present low-cost, local availability, standards-meeting efficiency, and simplified operation. The present study examines the combined use of algae turf scrubber and down-flow vertical constructed wetlands for a University's sanitary wastewater treatment. After a hydraulic detention time of 21 days, the unit was able to reach 49%, 48%, 98%, 82%, 99.2%, 70.1%, 44%, 83%, 72%, 86%, 69%, 95%, and 99.9% for conductivity, total soluble solids, turbidity, apparent color, N-NH3, total nitrogen, P-soluble, total carbon, chemical oxygen demand, inorganic carbon, TOC, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms. In accord to the Brazilian standard ABNT 13969/97, the treated effluent is eligible for reuse in floor and sidewalks washing, garden irrigation, and landscaping purposes.
Assessment of pathogen removal efficiency of vertical flow constructed wetland treating septage

Abstract:Septage refers to the semi-liquid waste material that accumulates in septic tanks and other onsite sanitation systems. It is composed of a complex mixture of human excreta, wastewater, and various solid particles. Septage is a potential source of water pollution owing to presence of high organic content, significant pathogen concentrations, and a range of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. The harmful impacts of septage pollution poses significant risks to public health through the contamination of drinking water sources, eutrophication of water bodies and spread of water borne diseases. Conventional septage treatment technologies often face limitations such as high operational costs, energy requirements, and the need for extensive infrastructure. Therefore, with an aim to treat septage through an alternative cost effective and energy-efficient technology, a laboratory-scale constructed wetland (CW) system (0.99 m2) consisting of a sludge drying bed and a vertical flow wetland bed was utilized for the treatment of septage. The sludge drying bed and vertical flow beds were connected in series and filled with a combination of gravel with varying sizes (ranging from 5 to 40 mm) and washed sand. Canna indica plants were cultivated on both beds to facilitate phytoremediation process. The system was operated with intermittent dosing of 30 Ltrs of septage every day for 2 months. The HRT of the system was fixed at 48 h. The average inlet loads of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) were measured as 150 ± 65.7 g m-2 day-1, 713 ± 443.9 g m-2 day-1, and 309 ± 66.3 g m-2 day-1, respectively. After treatment, the final effluent had an average load of 6 g m-2 day-1 for BOD5, 15 g m-2 day-1 for COD, and 51 g m-2 day-1 for TSS, indicating that the CW system achieved an average removal efficiency of 88% for BOD, 87% for COD, and 65% for TSS. The average load of total coliforms and helminthes eggs in the influent was recorded as 4 × 108 Colony-Forming Units (CFU) m-2 day-1 and 3 × 107 eggs m-2 day-1, respectively. However, the CW system demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing microbial contamination, with an average removal efficiency of 99% for both total coliforms and helminthes eggs. The vertical flow constructed wetland system, equipped with pretreatment by sludge drying bed, has proven to be efficient in treatment of septage.

Abstract:The main objective of this study was to evaluate the quality and reuse potential of treated effluents by constructed wetlands (CW) systems utilized for decentralized wastewater treatment in urban and rural scenarios in southern Brazil. The assessment, based on Brazilian discharge standards and wastewater reuse guidelines, revealed a close link between treatment efficiency and technological configurations, considering diverse inlet wastewater sources. Most CW treated effluents complied with regulatory standards for disposal, prompting the exploration of reuse scenarios in urban and agricultural settings. However, the study underscores the imperative for rigorous disinfection due to the limited microbiological removal capacity of CW. Overall, the research emphasizes the adaptability and resilience of CW in treating diverse wastewater compositions, highlighting their pivotal role in advancing circular economy principles within sanitation services. Importantly, the findings suggest significant potential for treated wastewater reuse in both urban and agricultural settings. Urban applications, including toilet flushing, floor washing, and garden irrigation, prove feasible for CW systems situated in residential and commercial buildings. Meanwhile, rural CW systems demonstrate suitability for reclaimed water directed toward crop fertigation, tailored to the specific needs and irrigation methods of various crops.

Abstract:The Brazilian Biodigester Septic Tank (BBST) is an on-site appropriate technology for blackwater treatment, which was developed to yield an effluent suitable for agricultural use. Although several studies have proven its efficacy for secondary blackwater treatment, there are few published studies about the microbiological quality of its effluent, and most of them focus on the quantification of total or thermotolerant coliforms. This study evaluates the performance of a BBST for the removal of human adenovirus (HAdV), Enterococcus spp., Salmonella sp., and Escherichia coli. The results further clarify the safety and risks associated with the reuse of the obtained effluent. The full-scale system consists of three 1.2 m3 interconnected reactors, with a blackwater input of 0.045 m3/day, and hydraulic retention time of 80 days. Six sample campaigns were performed at different stages of the monthly operating cycle. The system presented an average removal efficiency of 5.09 log10 for E. coli, 3.22 log10 for Enterococcus spp., 1.2 log10 for Salmonella sp., and 3.0 log10 for HAdV. According to the World Health Organization standards, the obtained effluent is suitable for subsurface irrigation, and for use in crops that develop distant from the soil or highly mechanized crop systems.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells implemented in constructed wetlands (CW-MFCs), albeit a relatively new technology still under study, have shown to improve treatment efficiency of urban wastewater. So far the vast majority of CW-MFC systems investigated were designed as lab-scale systems working under rather unrealistic hydraulic conditions using synthetic wastewater. The main objective of this work was to quantify CW-MFCs performance operated under different conditions in a more realistic setup using meso-scale systems with horizontal flow fed with real urban wastewater. Operational conditions tested were organic loading rate (4.9+-1.6, 6.7+-1.4 and 13.6+-3.2 g COD/m2.day) and hydraulic regime (continuous vs intermittent feeding) as well as different electrical connections: CW control (conventional CW without electrodes), open-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit between anode and cathode not connected) and closed-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit connected). Eight horizontal subsurface flow CWs were operated for about four months. Each wetland consisted of a PVC reservoir of 0.193 m2 filled with 4/8 mm granitic riverine gravel. All wetlands had intermediate sampling points for gravel and interstitial liquid sampling. The CW-MFCs were designed as three MFCs incorporated one after the other along the flow path of the CWs. Results showed no significant differences between tested organic loading rates, hydraulic regimes or electrical connections, however, on average, systems operated in closed-circuit CW-MFC mode under continuous flow outperformed the other experimental conditions. Closed-circuit CW-MFC compared to conventional CW control systems showed around 5% and 22% higher COD and ammonium removal, respectively. Correspondingly, overall bacteria activity, as measured by the fluorescein diacetate technique, was higher (4% to 34%) in closed-circuit systems when compared to CW control systems.
