Abstract:Ti-based alloys are widely used in orthopedic implants because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, in the complex physiological environment and influenced by other factors like cyclic loading, these implants can lose their natural properties and become incompatible or cyto-toxic to the body tissues and cells. Two of the causes are the deteriorated mechanical properties in this dynamic environment and the effects of by-products stemming from corrosion. In serious cases, implant failure results. Nano architectures on the surface of these alloys can improve the in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility of these alloys. This paper reviews recent progress pertaining to the design and construction of nano surface architectures on Ti-based alloys and their effects on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in the simulated physiological environment.

Abstract:In the quest to engineer advanced biomaterials for orthopedic implant applications, this study presents a meticulous exploration into the biocompatibility of TiZrNbCrV, TiZrNbFeCr, and TiZrNbFeV alloys. The research endeavors to unveil the intricate interplay between material attributes and cellular responses, offering nuanced insights into the development of biocompatible implant materials. A salient discovery emerges as the investigation scrutinizes the role of adhesion patches residing within enriched areas, yielding a profound impact on cellular spreading dynamics. This phenomenon, previously observed in Bio-HEA alloys, accentuates the pivotal role of surface characteristics as architectural orchestrators of cellular behavior. Central to cellular functionality, cell proliferation governs a spectrum of vital processes, including gene expression, migratory dynamics, and protein synthesis. The alloy samples under scrutiny reveal distinctive cell morphologies, with the TiZrNbFeCr alloy mirroring the morphology of Bio-HEA. In contrast, the TiZrNbCrV and TiZrNbFeV samples portray a diminutive osteoblast phenotype, signaling variances in cytoskeletal organization. The study underscores a compelling correlation between low cytotoxicity profiles and the tandem attributes of robust corrosion resistance and the formation of stable oxide passivation layers. Remarkably, the TiZrNbFeCr alloy emerges as a standout, characterized by augmented cell adhesion and an early commitment to ossification, as evidenced by the proliferation of larger cells. The significance of thermomechanical processing on the cellular response of biomedical Co-Cr-Mo alloys

Abstract:Strengthening of biomedical Co-Cr-Mo alloys has been explored via thermomechanical processing for enhancing the durability of their biomedical applications. However, the effects of cold and hot deformation on the cellular activity continue to be unclear. In this study, we prepared Co-Cr-Mo alloy rods via cold swaging and hot-caliber rolling and studied the relationship between the microstructure and cellular response of pre-osteoblasts. The cold-swaged rod experienced strain-induced martensitic transformation, which increased the volume fraction of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) ε-martensite to ∼60 vol.% with an increase in area reduction (r) to 30%. The 111γ fiber texture of the face-centered cubic (fcc) γ-matrix followed the Shoji-Nishiyama orientation relationship with ε-martensite. Cell culture results revealed beneficial effects of cold swaging on the cell response, in terms of adhesion, proliferation and morphology of cells, although increasing r did not significantly affect cellular metabolism levels. The addition of small content of Zr (0.04 wt.%) led to enhanced focal adhesion of cells, which became more significant at higher r. The microstructural evolution during hot-caliber rolling, namely, grain refinement without any phase transformation and strong texture development, did not appreciably affect the cellular activity. These findings are envisaged to facilitate alloy design and microstructural optimization for favorable tuning the osseointegration of biomedical Co-Cr-Mo alloys.
Biocompatibility and Microstructure-Based Stress Analyses of TiNbZrTa Composite Films

Abstract:Background: the clinical application of orthopedic or dental implants improves the quality of the lives of patients. However, the long-term use of implants may lead to implant loosening and related complications. The purpose of this study is to deposit titanium (Ti)-niobium (Nb)-zirconium (Zr)-tantalum (Ta) alloys on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V to increase structural strength and biocompatibility for the possible future application of implants. Materials and methods: Ti, Nb, Zr, and Ta served as the materials for the surface modification of the titanium alloy. TiNbZr and TiNbZrTa coatings were produced using cathodic arc evaporation, and a small amount of nitrogen was added to produce TiNbZrTa(N) film. Annealing and oxidation were then conducted to produce TiNbZrTa-O and TiNbZrTa(N)-O coatings. In this study, biological tests and finite element analyses of those five alloy films, as well as uncoated Ti-6Al-4V, were performed. Human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) and mouse fibroblast cells (L-929) were used to analyze cytotoxicity, cell viability, and cell morphology, and the bone differentiation of MG-63 was evaluated in an alkaline phosphatase experiment. Furthermore, for measuring the gene expression level of L-929, reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was conducted. The three-dimensional (3D) computational models of the coated and uncoated sample films were constructed using images of transmission electron microscopy and computer-aided design software and, then, the stress distributions of all models were evaluated by finite element analysis. Result: the cytotoxicity test revealed that the surface treatment had no significant cytotoxic effects on MG-63 and L-929 cells. According to the results of the cell viability of L-929, more cell activity was observed in the surface-treated experimental group than in the control group; for MG-63, the cell viability of the coated samples was similar to that of the uncoated samples. In the cell morphology analysis, both MG-63 and L-929 exhibited attached filopodia and lamellipodia, verifying that the cells were well attached. The alkaline phosphatase experiment demonstrated that the surface treatment did not affect the characteristics of early osteogenic differentiation, whereas RT-qPCR analysis showed that surface treatment can promote better performance of L-929 cells in collagen, type I, α1, and fibronectin 1. Finally, the results of the finite element analysis revealed that the coated TiNb interlayer can effectively reduce the stress concentration inside the layered coatings. Conclusions: TiNbZrTa series films deposited using cathodic arc evaporation had excellent biocompatibility with titanium alloys, particularly in regard to soft tissue cells, which exhibited an active performance. The finite element analysis verified that the TiNb interlayer can reduce the stress concentration inside TiNbZrTa series films, increasing their suitability for application in biomedical implants in the future.
The Effect of Cold Swaging Deformation on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of a Novel Metastable β Type Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb Alloy for Biomedical Devices

Abstract:This work investigated the microstructures, texture evolution, and mechanical properties of newly designed metastable β type Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb (wt.%) alloys for biomedical devices, which were subjected to cold swaging deformation with reductions of 15–75%. With the increment in the reduction of swaging deformation, the grains are broken and gradually refined, and stress-induced martensite transformation takes place, resulting in the formation of the α” phase. Moreover, the {1 1 2} <1 1 1> and {1 1 0} <1 1 2> fibers turn into γ-fiber {1 1 1} <1 1 0> and α-fiber {1 1 2} <1 1 0> with the increment in the swaging reduction. The α-fiber texture in particular, first weakens and then strengthens during cold deformation. Under the combined effect of sub-structures, grain refinement, and texture evolution, the strength of the alloy is gradually enhanced with the increment in the cold deformation reduction. The solution-treated alloy bar shows superior cold workability in the swaging process. The plasticity remains at a moderate level because the initial grains have not been completely broken at the beginning of cold swaging deformation. The elastic modulus of the alloy shows a downward trend with an increasing reduction, which is related to the dislocation multiplication, grain refinement, and grain orientation evolution during cold swaging deformation.

Abstract:Bioresorbable implants are intended to be biocompatible, mechanically stable, and to corrode gradually in response to an appropriate host response. In this work, a Zn-2Cu-0.1Ti (ZCT) alloy was fabricated by a combination of casting and hot-rolling. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of both TiZn 16 phase and a CuZn 4 phase in the alloy. ZCT showed an extraordinary increase in yield strength compared with the unalloyed Zn to 248 MPa (from 100 MPa) and a similar elongation to failure (33–34%). The alloy also possesses a relatively low corrosion rate when immersed in simulated body fluid. The 50 % extract of ZCT alloy exhibits excellent biocompatibility for MC3T3-E1 cells. These results indicate that the ZCT alloy has potential for clinical applications.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing of TC4–5Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of medical load-bearing implants. In this study, TC4–5Cu alloy was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) technology, aiming at investigating the microstructure, mechanical properties, as well as the biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of the alloys under different surface treatments (building, sandblasting and grinding) and comparing them with traditional TC4 alloy. The results demonstrate that the microstructure of TC4–5Cu becomes finer and the Cu element is mainly dispersed in the Ti matrix in the form of the CuTi 2 phase. The TC4–5Cu alloy's strength is obviously improved, and its elastic admissible strain (EAS) is higher than that of TC4. Surface grinding removes sticky powder and leftover pollutants from the surface, and a relatively flat surface is better for enhancing the overall biological activity of the TC4–5Cu alloy. The TC4–5Cu alloy's toxicity also decreased from grade 1 of TC4 to grade 0, demonstrating good cytocompatibility.

Abstract:One of the most important requirements for a metallic biomaterial is the mechanical biocompatibility, which means excellent mechanical properties—high strength and fatigue strength, but low elastic modulus, to be mechanically harmonized with hard tissues. In order to improve the mechanical and biocompatible performance of the Ti-25.5Nb-4.5Ta-8.0Zr wt% alloy, the influence of cold plastic deformation and solution treatment on its properties were investigated. The Ti-25.5Nb-4.5Ta-8.0Zr wt% alloy was fabricated by melting in a cold crucible furnace (in levitation) and then subjected to several treatment schemes, which include cold rolling and different solution treatments. Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of specimens in as-cast and thermo-mechanically processed condition were determined by SEM microscopy and tensile testing, for different structural states: initial as-cast/as-received, cold rolled and solution treated at different temperatures (800, 900, and 1000 °C) and durations (5, 10, 15, and 20 min), with water quenching. It was concluded that both cold rolling and solution treatment have important positive effects on structural and mechanical properties of the biomaterial, increasing mechanical strength and decreasing the elastic modulus. Samples in different structural states were also corrosion tested and the results provided important information on determining the optimal processing scheme to obtain a high-performance biomaterial. The final processing route chosen consists of a cold rolling deformation with a total deformation degree of 60%, followed by a solution heat treatment at 900 °C with maintenance duration of 5 min and water quenching. By applying this thermo-mechanical processing scheme, the Ti-25.5Nb-4.5Ta-8.0Zr wt% alloy showed an elastic modulus of 56 GPa (5% higher than in the as-cast state), an ultimate tensile strength of 1004 MPa (41.8% higher than in the as-cast state), a yield strength of 718 MPa (40.6% higher than in the as-cast state), and increased corrosion resistance (the corrosion rate decreased by 50% compared to the as-cast state).

Abstract:The effect of copper (Cu) addition on the microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of L605 (Co-20Cr-15 W-10Ni) alloy during cold deformation was investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The results indicated that the addition of Cu slightly decreased the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, while it significantly increased the elongation. EBSD results revealed that hexagonal close-packed (HCP) martensite was generated during cold deformation and increased with increasing cold deformation level. The deformation microstructure of both alloys at different cold deformation levels shows that the stacking faulting was the primary deformation mechanism at early stage of cold deformation, in contrast, dislocation planar-slip and face-centered cubic (FCC) to HCP martensitic transformation were prevailed at both medium and late cold deformation level. Cu addition significantly suppressed the dislocation and stacking fault multiplication at early deformation stage and delayed the martensitic transformation at medium and late deformation stage, which could be ascribed to the relatively high stacking faulting energy by Cu addition, resulting in the low strain hardening behavior in the entire deformation process. These cumulative results and analyses could provide a solid foundation for the further development of this novel type of biomedical Cu-containing cobalt-based alloy.

The Underlying Biological Mechanisms of Biocompatibility Differences Between Bare and TiN-coated NiTi Alloys

Abstract:TiN coating has been demonstrated to improve the biocompatibility of bare NiTi alloys; however, essential biocompatibility differences between NiTi alloys before and after TiN coating are not known so far. In this study, to explore the underlying biological mechanisms of biocompatibility differences between them, the changes of bare and TiN-coated NiTi alloys in surface chemical composition, morphology, hydrophilicity, Ni ions release, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and gene expression profiles were compared using energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, contact angle, surface energy, Ni ions release analysis, the methylthiazoltetrazolium (MTT) method, flow cytometry and microarray methods, respectively. Pathways binding to networks and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were employed to analyze and validate the microarray data, respectively. It was found that, compared with the bare NiTi alloys, TiN coating significantly decreased Ni ions content on the surfaces of the NiTi alloys and reduced the release of Ni ions from the alloys, attenuated the inhibition of Ni ions to the expression of genes associated with anti-inflammatory, and also suppressed the promotion of Ni ions to the expression of apoptosis-related genes. Moreover, TiN coating distinctly improved the hydrophilicity and uniformity of the surfaces of the NiTi alloys, and contributed to the expression of genes participating in cell adhesion and other physiological activities. These results indicate that the TiN-coated NiTi alloys will help overcome the shortcomings of NiTi alloys used in clinical application currently, and can be expected to be a replacement of biomaterials for a medical device field.
Surface treatment of 3D printed Cu-bearing Ti alloy scaffolds for application in tissue engineering

Abstract:3D printed medical titanium alloy has shown great advantages in manufacturing complex and personalized scaffolds for tissue engineering. To promote the repair of bone defects, fabrication of a scaffold with high accuracy and excellent cell behaviors is required. However, the partially melted or un-melted powders must be removed in the post-process. In this study, the effects of unfused metal powders on the biocompatibility of 3D printed Ti alloy scaffolds were analyzed by co-culture with MC3T3-E1 cells and RAW 264.7 cells, and the surface treatment strategy was proposed. Results showed that surface treatment can enhance the biocompatibility of the 3D printed Ti alloy scaffolds. The vitro tests with MC3T3-E1 cells demonstrated that the ETi5Cu (etched Ti5Cu) showed the better cell proliferation and osteogenic potential, and the lower cell apoptosis rates. Moreover, higher concentration of powders showed inhibitory effects on cytocompatibility and osteogenesis of MC3T3-E1 cells, and promoted the polarization of macrophages to M1 type. In , the removal of metal powders on the 3D printed scaffolds plays an important role in the biological performance, which provided a promising strategy for the application of Ti implants.

Abstract:The high strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance of alloys are highly desirable functional materials for biomedical applications. Multi-component alloys with a single face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase structure can provide superior ductility, while microstructures such as twins and stacking faults (SF) can be incorporated into the matrix to improve the strength of the alloy without damaging plasticity. Here, we have developed a single-fcc phase alloy Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 with low stacking faults energy, which can effectively produce annealed twins by recrystallization annealing after cold rolling. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 compared to commercial 316L alloy was methodically investigated by EBSD, TEM, and tensile testing. The results reveal that the Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy contains more twin boundaries and a high density of nano-twins and SFs in the microstructure, which effectively improve the strength of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy meanwhile maintaining a similar ductility to commercial 316L. The corrosion behavior of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 and 316L in simulated body fluids has been investigated using electrochemical characterization, indicated that compared to 316L ss, pitting in Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloys is easily inhibited and rapid re-passivation, meanwhile the twin boundaries were effective in weakening the formation of corrosion pits and impeded the expansion of corrosion crack. Compare the surfaces of the two alloys after passivation, apart from the Cr2O3/Cr(OH)3 contained in the passive film, the interactions between Co and other components in the passivation film produce more indissoluble substances with a lower enthalpy of formation that will enhance the passive film stability of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of different temperatures and exogenous gibberellic acid (GA3) treatments on the germination of Eranthis hyemalis (L.) Salisb. seeds were studied. E. hyemalis seeds were exposed to the germination process at +4 °C and +23 °C in distilled water (control) and 0.10 , 5 and 10 mM concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3). While no germination was observed at +23 °C either in the control group or in the germination dishes where GA3 was applied, at +4 °C, both in the control group (except for the 60th and 75th days) and with the all concentrations of GA 3 , seed germination was observed. At +4 °C, all concentrations of GA3 caused germination one month before germination occurred in to the control group.
Mechanical properties and bio-corrosion behavior of Mg-Zn-Zr alloy influenced by rotary swaging

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have received wide attention for their outstanding biocompatibility and an elastic modulus that is close to human bone. Whereas their mechanical and corrosion properties are poor, which need to be improved by alloying, processing and heat treatment processes, so as to expand their applications in the field of biomaterials. For the study, Mg-2.98 wt% Zn-0.50 wt% Zr alloys were produced by rotary swaging and some of the alloys were T2-treated at 250 °C for 1 h. The microstructure, mechanical properties, bio-corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility of the experimental alloys were evaluated using optical and scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, tensile, electrochemical, immersion and cytotoxicity tests. The results indicated that the experimental alloys had good biocompatibility. After rotary swaging, the homogeneous alloy grains were significantly refined, the presence of twins could be observed obviously, and the alloy exhibited superior mechanical properties (with a yield strength of 274 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 316 MPa and an elongation of 22.9%) and corrosion rate (0.539 mm/y in electrochemical test and 0.31 mm/y in immersion test). After further T2-treated, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloy decreased by 26% and 20%, respectively, and the elongation increased by only 6.6%. Additionally, the corrosion rate increased by 17.8% in the electrochemical test and by more than 14 times in the immersion test. Such changes in properties are closely associated with the disappearance of twins.

Abstract:Ti–10Cr alloy is a beta titanium alloy that exhibits variable Young's modulus, which can be beneficial for spinal implants. This study investigates the effects of cold deformation and heat treatment on the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of Ti–10Cr alloy. The ingot was homogenized, hot rolled, and annealed at various temperatures. Cold rolling was performed with different thickness reductions to examine the Young's modulus variation. Cell culture was employed to evaluate the biocompatibility. The microstructure and tensile test results of the heat-treated samples showed that recrystallization occurred during annealing, and 900 °C was the optimal heat treatment temperature. The Young's modulus exhibited the highest variation when the thickness was reduced by 10%. Moreover, the biocompatibility tests revealed that Ti–10Cr had higher biocompatibility than Ti–6Al–4V alloy.

Abstract:β-type titanium (Ti) alloys have been extensively investigated as orthopedic implant materials due to their unique combination of low elastic modulus, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, friction and wear performance, and cytotoxicity of β-type Ti–24Nb–38Zr–2Mo (TNZM) and Ti–24Nb–38Zr–2Mo–0.1Sc (TNZMS) have been comparatively investigated for orthopedic applications. Cold-rolling (CR) and cold-rolling plus solution-treatment (CR+ST) were performed on the as-cast (AC) alloys and their microstructures and material properties were characterized. The impact of Sc addition on the mechanical and corrosion properties, friction and wear behavior, and in vitro cytocompatibility of the TNZMS alloy was assessed. The CR+ST TNZMS alloy exhibited the best combination of properties among all the alloy samples, with a yield strength of 780 MPa, ultimate strength of 809 MPa, elongation of 19%, Young's modulus of 65.4 GPa, and hardness of 265 HV. Electrochemical testing in Hanks' Solution indicated that the CR+ST TNZMS sample also showed the highest corrosion resistance with a corrosion potential of –0.234 V, corrosion current density of 0.07 μA/cm2, and corrosion rate of 1.2 μm/y. Friction and wear testing revealed that the TNZMS alloy showed higher wear resistance compared to the TNZM alloy and the wear resistance of the different samples was ranked CR > CR+ST > AC. Finally, both the CR+ST TNZM and TNZMS showed no-cytotoxicity towards MG-63 cells and the TNZMS exhibited slightly higher cytocompatibility than the TNZM alloy.

Abstract:Zn, a promising biodegradable material, possesses excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, however its low strength and hardness largely limit its application in biodegradable implants. The addition of alloying elements would generally be suggested as an effective method for improving the mechanical properties. In the current study, alloying with a minor amount of Ca or Sr in Zn–1.5Mg alloy, the ternary alloys were composed of the matrix Zn and precipitated phase (Mg2Zn11 and CaZn13 for Zn–1.5Mg–0.1Ca alloy, Mg2Zn11 and SrZn13 for Zn–1.5Mg–0.1Sr alloy, respectively). Besides, the grain size of ternary alloys became more homogeneous and smaller than that of Zn–1.5Mg alloy. Meanwhile, the effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of Zn–1.5Mg alloy were analyzed. The results showed that the ternary alloys exhibited much higher yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation than those of Zn–1.5Mg alloy. The measured corrosion rates of the ternary alloys were slightly increased due to galvanic corrosion reaction. Besides, a model of the corrosion mechanism in the simulated body fluid was discussed here based on the results of the studied alloys.

Abstract:Biodegradable zinc (Zn) based materials have been regarded as promising candidates for orthopedic applications owing to their suitable biodegradability. However, pure Zn exhibited poor mechanical performance and inadequate biofunctionality, which restricted its biomedical applications. Herein, biodegradable Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were developed to enhance the mechanical strength of the Zn matrix and endow the alloys with antibacterial activity. The effect of Cu addition on corrosion behavior, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of biodegradable Zn-3Mg-xCu alloys was systematically investigated. In vitro immersion test revealed that Zn-3Mg-1Cu exhibited an increasing corrosion rate of 0.0504 mm∙y-1. The relative cell availability of MC3T3-E1 cells was over 70% after co-culture with 2-fold diluted extracts of the Zn-3Mg-xCu alloy for 3 d, indicating acceptable cytotoxicity. The Cu addition could enhance the antibacterial activity of the Zn-3Mg matrix, and Zn-3Mg-1Cu alloy exhibited the highest inhibition zone diameter (IZD) values of 10.4 mm and 6.0 mm against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Overall, the Zn-3Mg-1Cu could be recognized as a promising biodegradable orthopedic material owing to favorable degradation behavior, satisfying biocompatibility, and substantial antibacterial ability.

Abstract:Down syndrome is commonly associated with significant congenital heart disease with the potential for early development of pulmonary hypertension. As such, children with Down syndrome may be at increased risk for both perioperative and long-term mortality. The purpose of this study, using data collected from a population-based outcomes study, is to analyze the potential role that Down syndrome plays in the outcome of surgically "corrected" congenital heart disease. Data were collected from a registry of all Oregon residents who, in the period 1958 to the present, had a reparative operation for one of 14 congenital cardiac malformations when younger than 18 years (N = 3965 patients). Down syndrome was present in 289 (7%) of the total registry patients. In evaluating the cardiac mortality associated with Down syndrome for each of the repaired cardiac malformations, only complete atrioventricular septal defect was associated with significantly higher perioperative (13% vs 5%) as well as higher overall late cardiac mortality through 20 years after the operation (20% vs 5%; p = 0.04). The survival outcomes for each of the other cardiac malformations were similar for children with and without Down syndrome.

Abstract:The limited mechanical properties of pure Zn, such as its low strength and ductility, hinder its application as a material for biodegradable implants. Addressing this challenge, the current study focuses on the development of biodegradable Zn-based alloys, employing innovative alloy design and processing strategies. Here, alloys with compositions ranging from 0.02 to 0.10 weight percent (wt%) Cu, 1.22 to 1.80 wt% Ti, and 0.04 to 0.06 wt% Mo were produced utilizing a high-throughput gradient continuous casting process. This study highlights three specific alloys: Zn1.82Cu0.10Ti0.05Mo (HR8), Zn0.08Cu1.86Ti0Mo (HR7), and Zn1.26Cu0.13Ti0.06Mo (HR6), which were extensively evaluated for their microstructure, mechanical properties, electrochemical performance, potential as bioimplants, and cytotoxicity. These alloys were found to exhibit enhanced mechanical strength, optimal degradation rates, and superior biocompatibility, evidenced by in-vivo experiments with SD rats, positioning them as promising candidates for medical implants. This research not only introduces a significant advancement in biodegradable alloy development but also proposes an efficient method for their production, marking a pivotal step forward in biomedical engineering. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The limited mechanical properties of pure Zn have hindered its application in biodegradable implants. Our research primarily focuses on the alloy design and process strategies of biodegradable Zn-based alloys. We explore the ZnCuxTixMox alloys. This study introduces a high-throughput experimental approach for efficient screening of multi-component alloy systems with optimal properties. The ZnCuxTixMox alloys were designed and processed through gradient continuous casting, followed by homogenization and hot rolling. Our findings indicate that the Zn1.82Cu0.10Ti0.05Mo alloy demonstrates superior tensile, mechanical, and corrosion properties post hot rolling. The study suggests that Zn0.13Cu1.26Ti0.06Mo, Zn0.08Cu1.86Ti0Mo, and Zn1.82Cu0.10Ti0.05Mo alloys hold significant potential as biodegradable materials.
