Abstract:Background: Nurturing a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can cause major distress. As a result, these parents tend to experience a poor quality of life (QoL) compared to those raising typically developing (TD) children. Objectives: To evaluate the factors which affect the QoL of parents raising children clinically-diagnosed with ASD in Jeddah, and to provide knowledge for the establishment of comprehensive policies and projects that can improve their mental well-being. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was utilized to assess 200 parents of children clinically-diagnosed with ASD at least 3 months prior to the research. A self-administered WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was employed to assess the QoL of participants through four domains, namely physical health, psychological well-being, social relationships, and environment. Results: Most of the participants were female (58.5%), married (87.0%), and employed (56.5%). Majority completed high school (68.5%), lived in the city (95.5%) and rented their homes (88.5%). Quality of life was significantly affected by gender, employment, social status, and educational attainment of participants. Parents with higher educational attainment and employment and social status exhibited better. Furthermore, female parents experienced lower QoL and more depressive symptoms than males. Conclusion: Gender, educational attainment, and both employment and social status significantly affected the QoL of parents raising children diagnosed with ASD. Furthermore, improving the physical health, psychological, social relationships, and environment of these parents would give them a better QoL and health satisfaction.
Gender differences in predictors of quality of life for parents of children with Autism Spectrum disorder in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Purpose: Few researchers have examined gender differences in the quality of life (QoL) of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in diverse cultural contexts. The purpose of this study was to identify how ASD severity, affiliate stigma, perceived social support, family functioning, and coping strategies differentially predict the QoL of mothers and fathers of children with ASD in Saudi Arabia. Design and methods: Based on a cross-sectional research design, data were gathered between April and July 2023 from a convenience sample of 376 parents (220 mothers and 156 fathers) of children with ASD in Saudi Arabia. Welch's t-test and regression were used to achieve the study purpose. Results: Mothers of children with ASD reported lower QoL, perceived social support, and family functioning than fathers. Mothers relied on emotion-focused coping strategies, whereas fathers used problem-focused coping strategies. Furthermore, affiliate stigma, perceived social support, and family functioning significantly predicted the QoL of mothers and fathers of children with ASD. However, the severity of ASD affected only the QoL of the mothers. Problem-focused coping significantly predicted fathers' QoL but not mothers' QoL. Conclusions: The results highlight gender differences in the factors that predict the QoL of parents of children with ASD in Saudi Arabia. Practice implications: Healthcare professionals should consider parents' gender when providing support and interventions to improve parental QoL.

Abstract:Background: Several studies among parents of children afflicted with ASD reported higher levels of parenting stress compared to parents of other children with intellectual disabilities (ID) or typically developing (TD) children (Miranda et al., 2019). Also, Omani literature postulates that Omani parents of children with ASD endure a higher parental burden, clinically significant stress levels, anxiety, depression, and an increased public stigma compared to parents of TD children. However, relatively little is known about parental stress constructs in the Omani literature. Research Design: A cross-sectional design was used to test a predictive model of parental stress in mothers raising children diagnosed with ASD in the Sultanate of Oman. Aims: This study examined mental health, parental burden, and affiliate stigma as predictors of parenting stress. It also examined the mediating role of self-compassion and the moderating role of coping strategies and social support between these potential predictors and parenting stress. Results: Results showed that affiliate stigma and parental burden were significant predictors of parenting stress. Self-compassion partially moderated the relationship between mental health, parental burden, and parenting stress. Implications are discussed in light of supporting programs and interventions to help these mothers cope and ultimately improve the quality of life in families of children with ASD. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of addressing parental burden and stigma in supporting parents and promoting family well-being

Abstract:Parents are an essential element of family intervention for all children, including those with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We can better understand and address parents' knowledge gaps about ASD through in-depth research and inquiry into parents' current level of understanding, attitude, and perception. We aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception of ASD and influencing factors towards ASD among a group of parents with and without a child diagnosed with ASD in Sakaka, Al-Jouf Region, Saudi Arabia. Using the cross-sectional study design, information from the parents was gathered using a pretested questionnaire that included validated scales for measuring knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions related to ASD. The required number of participants was selected using the convenience sampling method. We used Spearman's correlation test to determine the strength and direction of correlation between each domain. As a last step, we analyzed the influencing factors using binomial logistic regression. Among the 400 participants, 41.2% had high knowledge, 69.1% had a positive attitude, and 60.3% had a high perception of ASD. We found that knowledge was significantly higher among the parents with autistic individuals in the family (p = 038). The high and positive attitude was significantly greater among females (p = 0.010) and parents with high income (p = 0.007), and the perception was significantly associated with females (p = 0.037) and highly educated participants (p = 0.046). Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between knowledge, attitude, and perception. Overall, only less than half of the participants had a high knowledge of ASD. Hence, we recommend awareness-raising programs for the parents in this region. Furthermore, a prospective study involving parents from all provinces of Saudi Arabia is recommended.

Abstract:Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects young children in social relatedness and communication besides other characteristics. A community's awareness and early intervention services in diagnosing and treating autistic children are essential for preventing the expected complications, eg language delay, social interaction, and intellectual ability. Aim: To assess the parent's knowledge and perceptions regarding autism and its associated clinical features and effects. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted targeting all available parents aged 18 years or more living in Aseer region. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire from randomly selected parents who attended outpatient clinics at Abha Maternity and Children Hospital and Aseer Central Hospital. Parents' knowledge regarding autism was assessed covering general knowledge, clinical features, social effects, consequences, and curability. Results: A total of 477 parents participated. Parents' ages ranged from 18 to 85 years. 261 (54.7%) parents were male and 216 (45.3%) were females. Nearly 65.6% of parents were university graduates and 28.3% had a secondary level of education. About 50.9% of the parents know that genetics play a major role in causing autism, 69.6% think that most children with autism have special talents or abilities, 64.2% know that delayed language development is one of the main symptoms of autism, 61.2% also know that repetitive movements of the hands and head are a common symptom of autism. About 36.9% of parents think that diagnosing a child with autism will lead to discrimination against the child, 33.3% of parents think that autism is a rare condition in this country compared to the West. Conclusion: The study showed that parents had poor knowledge levels regarding autism and its related clinical features, especially male parents with low levels of education. On the other hand, their perception of the disease and its frequency in the study area was satisfactory.

Abstract:Background Caring for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) poses significant challenges and parents are at increased risk of psychological distress and reduced wellbeing. Methods We investigated the impact of having an autistic child on the wellbeing of 103 parents in Pakistan. Data were collected using the Self-Reported Questionnaire (SRQ-20), Autism Parenting Stress Index (APSI) and the WHO's Quality of Life Brief Version. Results Parents reported reduced psychological health and worsened social relationships in comparison with population norms. The mean prevalence of APSI responses indicating frequent stress was 78 % overall; 91 % around core autism behaviours, 77 % around comorbid behaviours and 65 % around comorbid physical problems. SRQ-20 scores suggested that there were moderate mental distress levels in parents of children with ASD; 60 % of participants scored ≥ 8 indicating probable mental disorder. Parenting stress, including stress specific to comorbid behaviours, was modestly associated with (total) levels of (general) mental distress and with poorer physical and psychological health. Mothers reported significantly poorer psychological health and greater levels of mental distress than fathers, while quality of life markers concerning social relationships and environmental health were higher in parents of younger children with ASD. Conclusions Parents of children with ASD experience significant ASD-specific parental stress, psychological distress and decreased quality of life and wellbeing. These parents frequently present with reduced energy levels and depressive symptoms. This data provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by parents of children with ASD in Pakistan and provides a framework to guide further research and clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: Parenting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with increased stress, affecting both family dynamics and the well-being of the parents. Understanding this stress is crucial for developing effective support mechanisms. Objective: The primary goal of this study was to quantitatively assess the stress levels among parents of children with ASD, focusing on the disparities between mothers and fathers. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional design, with a sample size of 144 parents from various public and private hospitals. Participants were selected based on specific inclusion criteria, including having a child aged 3-6 years with a diagnosis of ASD. Data collection was performed using the Parental Stress Scale (PSS). Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 22, incorporating chi-square tests, t-tests, and regression analysis to explore correlations between stress levels and demographic variables. Results: Of the participants, 76.4% were female and 23.6% male. The age distribution was 27.8% (20-30 years), 46.5% (30-40 years), and 25.7% (40-50 years). Educational backgrounds varied: 2.1% under Matric, 9.0% Matric, 19.4% Intermediate, 29.2% Bachelors, 36.8% Masters, and 3.5% PhD. The data revealed mothers experienced higher stress levels, with an average PSS score of 35.4 compared to 28.7 in fathers. Additionally, stress levels were found to be significantly correlated with the child's severity of autism (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study concludes that parents of children with ASD, particularly mothers, experience high levels of stress. These findings highlight the necessity for specialized support systems tailored to the needs of these families, informing future research and policy-making in this area.

Abstract:Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong hereditary neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by a lack of social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviours. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) classified symptoms of autism into two domains: the social communication and interaction domain. However, studies on autism in Saudi Arabia are still insufficient. Therefore, awareness and knowledge about autism can facilitate early detection and treatment, resulting in better outcomes. Aim: To evaluate parents’ knowledge, awareness, and attitude towards their autistic children in a tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Baljurashi Mental Health Hospital, ALBaha region, Saudi Arabia, from January 2023 to November 2023. A total of 69 parents with autistic children who attended the outpatient clinic at Baljurashi Mental Health Hospital were included in the study. A questionnaire was administered among parents to assess their knowledge, awareness, and attitude regarding autism. Data was statistically analysed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test. Results: The age of the parents ranged from 16 to over 50 years, with 47 (68.1%) being males and 22 (31.9%) being females. Almost 29 (42.0%) of the parents were postgraduates, and 21 (30.4%) had a university-level education. About 24 (34.8%) of the participants believed that consanguineous marriage increases the risk of autism, 19 (27.5%) believed that some vaccines increase the risk of autism, and 39 (56.5%) knew that autism is associated with learning disabilities. Three-quarters of the participants, 54 (78.3%), stated that autism was known to them, 50 (72.5%) thought that an autistic child could be affected by a normal child, and 53 (76.8%) had good knowledge about autism. Conclusion: The study showed that the majority of parents had good knowledge about autism disorder. The findings reflect the positive impact of focused training initiatives and public awareness efforts aimed at improving parents’ knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward autism.

Abstract:The aim was (1) to investigate potential differences in future anxiety, experience of stigma, emotion regulation and quality of life between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Emirate and Australian mothers/fathers/caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); (2) to examine the predictive role of sociodemographic characteristics (i.e. culture, parental gender, age, and family socioeconomic status), child's features (i.e. child IQ and ASD severity) on parenting stress in parents of children with ASD in Italy and Japan; (3) to study the predictive role of culture, parents' sociodemographic characteristics, child's characteristics, future anxiety, experience of stigma, and emotion regulation on the quality of life between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Emirate and Australian mothers/fathers/caregivers of children with ASD. Participants were parents or main caregivers of autistic children. There were 280 parents of children (aged six to ten years) with a diagnosis of ASD. For analyses of gender and country differences in future anxiety, experience of stigma, emotion regulation and quality of life, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was performed. Findings highlight the importance of a cross-cultural approach to understand the predictive contribution of selected sociodemographics of parents and child on study variables.

Abstract:Aims: The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not easy as there is no direct test that exists to establish such a diagnosis. Increasing community and healthcare professional knowledge of the ASD spectrum is crucial because it will encourage parents of ASD children to seek screening and diagnosis from a specialist, allowing for better early detection and treatment. This study explored the knowledge of the general population in Saudi Arabia regarding ASD and assessed variables associated with an accurate understanding of ASD. Methods: A total of 769 participants were involved in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted in Saudi Arabia between November 2021 and February 2022 using an online survey tool to explore the knowledge of the general population in Saudi Arabia regarding typical child development and ASD. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine factors affecting participants’ knowledge of autism. Results: Overall, the study participants showed a weak level of knowledge about autism with a mean score of 5.9 (SD: 3.1), comprising 34.7% of the total maximum obtainable score. Participants with a middle income category of 5000–7500 SR are less likely to be knowledgeable about autism compared to others (OR: 0.60 (95% CI: 0.39–0.92)) (p-value = 0.020). Conclusion: The participants in our study showed limited knowledge about autism. Government funds should be made available to facilitate educational services for ASD children. More funding and resources should be allocated by the government to provide assistance for children with special needs, and changes in public facilities are required to meet the demands of ASD patients. Through an informed educational effort, various media platforms should assist in improving the community’s understanding of ASD and their attitude toward ASD patients. Educational campaigns should focus on enhancing the public’s knowledge about ASD treatment and etiology.

Abstract:Introduction: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in children in Saudi Arabia. ADHD significantly impacts children and their families, particularly by increasing parental stress and diminishing quality of life. In Saudi Arabia, there is a research gap regarding the quality of life and coping mechanisms of parents managing children with ADHD. This study assesses levels of depression and anxiety, quality of life, and coping strategies among parents of children diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey with 151 parents of ADHD-diagnosed children, utilizing the WHOQOL-Brief for life quality, the Brief-COPE for coping strategies, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) for depression (PHQ9-9 items) and generalized anxiety (GAD7-7 items) modules. Results: Among the parents surveyed, 36% reported moderate to severe depression, while 39.1% experienced moderate to high anxiety levels. Quality of life was significantly positively correlated with higher household monthly income (HHI), employment status, sibling count, and effective coping strategies. Conversely, a parent’s age, educational level, and, in particular, maternal status were inversely related to anxiety levels, with fathers displaying higher maladaptive coping scores. Conclusion: This study sheds light on the considerable anxiety and depression experienced by parents of children with ADHD, significantly affecting their quality of life. Lower quality of life among parents is associated with high levels of depression, anxiety, and ineffective coping strategies. These insights highlight the critical need for interventions to aid parental mental health, thereby improving their overall quality of life amidst ADHD challenges.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifetime neurodevelopmental condition. It affects not only the child but also the members of the family and parents particularly. The current study was qualitative in nature, designed to explore the experiences of parents, raising a child with ASD in Pakistan. The sample of the study comprised 15 mothers and 13 fathers of children with ASD. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data and five stages of stress and six major themes (Child management and diagnosis, Treatment and financial challenges, Social suffering, Emotional and psychological pain, Marital discord and Coping mechanism) emerged from the data. In the current study, parents of children with ASD reported lack of guidance, high fee demands, lack of awareness, family pressure, high level of stress and stigmatization. Parents also suffered from unbearable distress and marital discords including conflict, disharmony, lack of communication, and lack of spousal support. Parents deemed these challenges as never ending and it had a great impact on their wellbeing and on their abilities to cope or manage things in their daily life. This research project has wide implications in the fields of counseling psychology, educational psychology, and mental health.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The present study investigated the use of perforated plastic floors in the rearing of male and female poultry under thermal comfort conditions. The study was conducted in 2 climate chambers, in one was conventional poultry litter (wood shavings) and in the other was a perforated plastic floor. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with the factors wood shavings and plastic floor. In each chamber, the animals were divided into 16 experimental pens (8 with males and 8 with females) with a density of 12 birds/m2. The poultry rearing effect was evaluated in terms of air quality (% concentration of ammonia [NH3] and carbon dioxide [CO2]); broiler performance, e.g., weight gain (kg), feed intake (kg), feed conversion, carcass yield and parts (%), meat production (kg/m2), and viability (% of live birds at d 42); scores of hygiene and mobility; and injuries in the chest, hocks, and footpads. Treatments affected air quality, with higher concentrations of NH3 on d 42 (25 ppm vs. 2 ppm) and CO2 (1,400 ppm vs. 1,000 ppm) for wood shavings than for perforated plastic floor, respectively. Males showed a better performance (weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion) than females on d 42 in both floor types (wood shavings and plastic floor). Males reared on wood shavings showed a higher meet production (35.992 kg/m2) than females (32.257 kg/m2). On the plastic floor, males showed a better viability (100%) than females (94.05%), as well better meet production for males (38.55 kg·m‐2) than females (31.64 kg/m2). There was no incidence of breast lesions in any of the studied systems. The birds reared on the plastic floor had better hygiene scores and lower hock injury rates than birds reared in the wood shavings chambers. The results of the present study show that the use of perforated plastic floors in chicken farming is an efficient method, which promotes a better‐quality environment, superior production rates, and reduced incidence of injuries.

Abstract:This comprehensive study delves into the family quality of life (FQOL) of caregivers in Saudi Arabia, focusing on those caring for individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, and other disabilities and those without any disabilities. Employing the Arabic version of the Beach Center FQOL Scale, the research encompasses a diverse group of 1065 family members. It reveals that caregivers of individuals without disabilities experience notably higher FQOL, especially in domains such as family interaction, parenting, emotional, and physical/material well-being. The study also identifies unique FQOL challenges encountered by caregivers of individuals with autism. These insights underscore the necessity for specific support mechanisms catering to the distinct needs of caregivers, particularly those handling autism-related challenges, highlighting a critical area for targeted interventions and policy formulation.

Abstract:Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurological condition which results in social skill deficits, communication difficulties, and restrictive and repetitive behaviour. The difficulties associated with parenting children with ASD have been studied extensively, mainly from the perspectives of mothers. The extent of involvement of fathers in the raising of children with ASD has received limited scholarly attention, especially in non-Western contexts such as the United Arab Emirates. Objectives: This study asked mothers to evaluate the involvement of fathers in the development of children with ASD. Methods: In all, 240 mothers completed the Fathers' Involvement in Development and Rehabilitation Scale, designed based on a review of literature on the construct of involvement, namely attitude, participation in training, and support domains. The data were subjected to computation of mean scores, multivariate analysis of variance, hierarchical regression, and moderation analyses. Results: The results suggested that fathers held positive attitudes and provided substantial support to their children with ASD. However, mothers were ambivalent regarding the participation of fathers in training to support the development of their children. Differences were also observed between participants according to marital status, location, child gender, and ASD severity. Conclusion: Recommendations for targeted training for fathers and other study implications are discussed.

Abstract:A number of investigations have implicated the involvement of free radicals in various pathogenic process including initiation/promotion stages of carcinogenesis and antioxidants have been considered to be a protective agent for this reason. An iron chelate, ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA), is a potent nephrotoxic agent and induces acute and subacute renal proximal tubular necrosis by catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide-derived production of hydroxyl radicals, which are known to cause lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. The latter is associated with a high incidence of renal adenocarcinoma in rodents. Lipid peroxidation and DNA damage are the principal manifestation of Fe-NTA-induced toxicity, which could be mitigated by antioxidants. In this study, we therefore investigated the effect of curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa for a possible protection against lipid peroxidation and DNA damage induced by Fe-NTA and hydrogen peroxide in vitro. Incubation of renal microsomal membrane/and or calf thymus DNA with hydrogen peroxide (40 mM) in the presence of Fe-NTA (0.1 mM) induces renal microsomal lipid peroxidation and DNA damage to about 2.2-and 5.6-fold, respectively, as compared to saline treated control (P<0.001). Induction of renal microsomal lipid peroxidation and DNA damage was modulated by curcumin dose dependently. In lipid peroxidation protection studies, curcumin treatment showed a dose-dependent strong inhibition (18-80% inhibition, P<0.05-0.001) of Fe-NTA and hydrogen peroxide-induced lipid peroxidation as measured by MDA formation in renal microsomes. Similarly, in DNA-sugar damage protection studies, curcumin treatment also showed a dose dependent inhibition (22-57% inhibition, P<0.05-0.001) of DNA-sugar damage. From these studies, it was concluded that curcumin modulates Fe-NTA and hydrogen peroxide-induced peroxidation of microsomal membrane lipids and DNA damage. Curcumin might, therefore, be a suitable candidate for the chemoprevention of Fe-NTA-associated cancer.
The Mediating Effect of Parenting Stress on the Relationship Between Social Support and Quality of Life in Parents of Children With Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract:Objective The aim of the present study is to investigate whether parenting stress mediate the relationship between social support and quality of life in parents of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. In addition, we examined what other variables moderate the relationships in this mediation model. Methods Using the two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling approach (MASEM), 44 correlation matrices were synthesized from 28 empirical studies ( N = 13,270) and fitted to the hypothesized mediation model. Results There is a significant partial mediation effect of parenting stress on the relationship between social support and quality of life. Subgroup analysis through the first stage analysis suggested that social support measurements, parental role, and child's age moderated the relationship between social support and parenting stress, and that the focus of quality of life moderated the relationship between social support and quality of life. Subgroup analysis through the second stage analysis indicated that parenting stress had a significantly stronger predictive effect on quality of life in Western culture, while the predictive effect of social support on quality of life was significantly stronger in Eastern culture. Conclusion Having more social support can reduce parents' stress and then improving their quality of life, which can help them cope more positively and effectively with their autistic children.

Abstract:Children with chronic illnesses pose a significant burden on parents who are directly involved in caregiving. Despite the high prevalence of chronic illnesses among children in Saudi Arabia, no study has examined caregiver burden and other related factors in the Saudi Population. Thus, this study determined the levels of caregiver burden, perceived social support, and perceived stress and their association among parents who provide care to their child with a chronic illness.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by difficulties in communication and social-emotional interaction. It is associated with an increase of parental stress and poor family functioning, both of which are harmful for a child's functioning and adaptive behavior. An important source of support to parents are grandparents, especially in traditional populations. One such population is the Bedouin population. The present study tested the association between emotional support from mother and mother-in-law to the adaptive behavior of children with ASD, and whether this relation is serially mediated by family functioning and satisfaction in life as reported by Bedouin mothers of children with ASD. 100 mothers of children with ASD fulfilled a questionnaire about emotional support from their mothers and mother-in-law, family functioning, satisfaction in life and child's adaptive behavior. We found that indeed, family functioning and satisfaction in life serially mediated the relations between emotional support from mother and mother-in-law and child adaptive behavior. These findings indicate that intergenerational solidarity between women can improve not only the functioning of the nuclear family and wife's satisfaction with life, but also, indirectly, the adaptive behavior of a child with ASD. It highlights the importance of women solidarity, especially in traditional society, where women are kept marginal.
