Abstract:Background Malnutrition is prevalent across healthcare settings and has adverse outcomes for patients and the health system. However, some patients do not recall being informed about their malnutrition risk/diagnosis. Objective This meta-synthesis of qualitative studies aimed to identify and synthesise patient, carer and health worker perceptions and understanding of the terminology used by health workers for malnutrition risk/malnutrition. Methods Four databases were searched (Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Embase) up until August 2023. Title, abstract and full text screening were independently completed by 2 reviewers. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Qualitative Studies Checklist. Data were analysed by the review team using thematic synthesis. The resulting themes informed review findings. The confidence in each finding was assessed using GRADE-CERQual. Results Seventeen studies were included contributing perspectives from patients (n=7 studies), health workers (n=5 studies) or both patients and health workers (n=5 studies); no studies included carer perspectives. There were 5 themes: "Patients have differing understanding, interpretation of, and identification with malnutrition risk and malnutrition terminology" (very low confidence); "Health workers perceive that patients do not identify with or understand malnutrition risk and malnutrition terminology" (low confidence); "Patients do not routinely perceive their malnutrition risk or malnutrition diagnosis as problematic" (low confidence); "Health workers use varied terminology for malnutrition risk and malnutrition" (low confidence); "Action is required to improve malnutrition diagnostic communication" (low confidence). Conclusions Findings highlighted disparity in patients' perspectives regarding the terms used for malnutrition risk and malnutrition. Varied terms were used by health workers and patients did not often associate these terms with a health condition that required treatment. Health workers and patients called for action to improve the communication of malnutrition. To do this, further research exploring malnutrition terminology and the broader concept of malnutrition communication is required with patients, carers and health workers.

Abstract:Background Nutrition screening on admission is critically important to systematically identify patients with undernutrition given the known relationship with deleterious clinical outcomes. Limited data exist regarding optimal processes and criteria for pediatric nutrition screening. Therefore, we sought to characterize nutrition screening practices in pediatric hospitals. Methods A total of 365 inpatient pediatric hospitals in the United States were identified, eligible, and contacted. Eligible hospitals included general pediatric hospitals, adult hospitals with pediatric units, and specialty pediatric hospitals. One respondent at each eligible hospital was asked to complete a 33‐question survey of admission nutrition screening practices. Results Of 268 survey respondents, 37% represented pediatric units in adult hospitals, 35% general pediatric hospitals, and 28% pediatric specialty or psychiatric hospitals. A total of 98.5% endorsed the existence of a screening process on admission. Anthropometrics (eg, body mass index z score, 84%) and nutrition status (eg, change in intake, 67%) were the most common screening criteria applied. A nutrition screening instrument was used in 37% of institutions, and only 31% of institutions reported using pediatric‐specific screening instruments. Pediatric units within adult hospitals were 1.38 times more likely to use a screening instrument validated in any population. Barriers to nutrition screening included the lack of a standard screening procedure and insufficient staff to conduct screening. Fifty‐four percent of respondents reported a desire to change their hospital's nutrition screening process. Conclusion Most pediatric hospitals screen for nutrition risk on admission. However, methods and criteria varied widely across pediatric hospitals, highlighting the importance of standardized best practices.

Abstract:Summary Backgrounds & aims Malnutrition is prevalent among hospitalized patients in developed countries, contributing to negative health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Timely identification and management of malnutrition are crucial. The lack of a universally accepted definition and standardized diagnostic criteria for malnutrition has led to the development of various screening tools, each with varying validity. This complicates early identification of malnutrition, hindering effective intervention strategies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the most valid and reliable nutritional screening tool for assessing the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized adults. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted to identify validation studies published from inception to November 2023, in the Pubmed/MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL databases. This systematic review was registered in INPLASY (INPLASY202090028). The risk of bias and quality of included studies were assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies version 2 (QUADAS-2). Meta-analyses were performed for screening tools accuracy using the symmetric hierarchical summary receiver operative characteristics models. Results Of the 1646 articles retrieved, 60 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review, and 21 were included in the meta-analysis. A total of 51 malnutrition risk screening tools and 9 reference standards were identified. The meta-analyses assessed four common malnutrition risk screening tools against two reference standards (Subjective Global Assessment [SGA] and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism [ESPEN] criteria). The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) vs SGA had a sensitivity (95% Confidence Interval) of 0.84 (0.73–0.91), and specificity of 0.85 (0.75–0.91). The MUST vs ESPEN had a sensitivity of 0.97 (0.53–0.99) and specificity of 0.80 (0.50–0.94). The Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) vs SGA had a sensitivity of 0.81 (0.67–0.90) and specificity of 0.79 (0.72–0.74). The Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) vs ESPEN had a sensitivity of 0.99 (0.41–0.99) and specificity of 0.60 (0.45–0.73). The Nutrition Universal Screening Tool-2002 (NRS-2002) vs SGA had a sensitivity of 0.76 (0.58–0.87) and specificity of 0.86 (0.76–0.93). Conclusions The MUST demonstrated high accuracy in detecting malnutrition risk in hospitalized adults. However, the quality of the studies included varied greatly, possibly introducing bias in the results. Future research should compare tools within a specific patient population using a valid and universal gold standard to ensure improved patient care and outcomes.

Abstract:Background Malnutrition screening is not widely practiced in outpatient cancer centers. This review aims to determine the validity of malnutrition screening tools and provide recommendations for clinical use. Methods Studies identified by a systematic review assessed the general validity of screening tools in adult oncology outpatients from five databases through 2022. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) convened a working group of members from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, American Cancer Society, American Society for Clinical Oncology, American Society for Nutrition, American Society for Radiation Oncology, Association of Cancer Care Centers, and Oncology Nursing Society to answer the following questions: (1) should clinicians screen for malnutrition, (2) which malnutrition screening tools are recommended, and (3) what are the clinical applications for malnutrition risk screening in adult oncology outpatients? Results Twenty of 738 studies met the criteria and were reviewed. Six screening tools with specific cut‐points demonstrated validity and are recommended, including the Mini Nutritional Assessment (≤23.5), Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST; MST ≥ 2 and patient‐led MST ≥ 2), Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST; MUST ≥ 1 and MUST ≥ 2), Nutrition Risk Screening‐2002 (NRS‐2002; NRS‐2002 ≥ 2 and NRS‐2002 ≥ 3), NUTRISCORE ≥ 5, and Patient‐Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form (PG‐SGA SF; PG‐SGA SF ≥ 7 and PG‐SGA SF ≥ 8). Conclusion Six screening tools are valid for malnutrition risk identification in oncology ambulatory settings and recommended before treatment initiation and regularly thereafter, depending on treatment course. Research is needed to understand to what extent early diagnosis and management of malnutrition improves the clinical care of oncology patients.

Abstract:Whether nonhuman primates exhibit population‐level handedness remains a topic of considerable debate. Previous research has shown that chimpanzees are right‐handed when frequencies of hand use are recorded but some have questioned the validity of this approach. In this study, we evaluated handedness in 180 captive chimpanzees for a task measuring bimanual actions. Bouts rather than frequency of hand use were recorded in each subject. Population‐level right‐handedness was found using both continuous and nominal scales of measurement. Neither sex nor rearing history had a significant effect on hand use. These results indicate that chimpanzees are right‐handed, even when using a more conservative measure of handedness. Limitations in the use of bouts in handedness assessment are also discussed.

Abstract:Malnutrition (undernutrition) remains one of the most serious health problems for older people worldwide. Many factors contribute to malnutrition in older people, including: loss of appetite, polypharmacy, dementia, frailty, poor dentition, swallowing difficulties, social isolation, and poverty. Malnutrition is common in the hospital setting, yet often remains undetected by medical staff. The objective of this review is to compare the validity and reliability of Nutritional Screening Tools (NSTs) for older adults in the hospital setting. We also provide an overview of the various nutritional screening and assessment tools used to identify malnutrition in hospitalised older adults. These include: Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), MNA-short form (MNA-SF), Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ), Geriatric Nutrition Risk Index (GNRI) and anthropometric measurements. The prevalence and outcomes of malnutrition in hospitalised older adults are also addressed.

Abstract:PurposeEvidence-based guidelines exist to guide health professionals and services about cancer nutrition care; however, the views of cancer patients and carers are not well understood. This study aimed to understand the experience and needs of cancer patients and carers regarding nutrition care across the care continuum.MethodsUsing a mixed-methods approach, cancer patients and carers completed a cross-sectional online survey and focus groups. Participants were recruited through health services and cancer organisation consumer networks via email distribution lists, e-newsletters, and social media. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using content analysis.ResultsOf 165 survey respondents, only 51% (n=84) reported they talked to a health professional about their nutrition care at any time-point, and only 32% with a dietitian. The majority (84%) of patients and carers felt nutrition was important at one or more time-points in their cancer path, indicating during and after cancer treatment the most important. However, perceived support from health professionals for nutrition care was deemed low at all time-points. Five focus groups were held (n=20; 16 patients, 2 carers, 2 both patients/carers) and five themes emerged: nutrition information, experiences and need; control over diet and nutrition; importance and value of nutrition; access to support; what optimal nutrition care looks like.ConclusionPatients and carers felt nutrition was important during their cancer path, but perceived support from health professionals for nutrition care was low. This study has highlighted patient and carer nutrition experiences that will inform development of a co-designed optimal cancer nutrition care pathway.

Evidence Summary of Malnutrition Risk Screening in Adult Inpatients

Abstract:Objective To assess and summary the guideline best evidence on malnutrition risk screening in adult inpatients so as to provide a reference for malnutrition risk screening of adult inpatients. MethodsGuidelines on malnutrition risk screening in adult inpatients were systematically retrieved in nutrition association official website, guideline website and database and were screened. All of the guidelines were assessed by 4 trained researchers with the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREEⅡ). Guidelines with level C were excluded, and guidelines with level A and B were selected to extract, translate and summary the recommendations. ResultsA total of 213 guidelines were retrieved and 140 were selected after eliminating repetitive guidelines. Finally, 13 guidelines were included after eliminating 128 guidelines by reading titles and abstracts. AGREE Ⅱ evaluation results showed that there were 3 guidelines with level A and 10 guidelines with level B. Analysis and summary showed that a total of 16 items of 3 classes best evidence on malnutrition risk screening in adult inpatients were selected including screening qualification, population, time and tools. ConclusionsIn this study, guidelines best evidence on malnutrition risk screening in adult inpatients provides a credible reference for clinical practice. Population with high risk of malnutrition should be assessed in comprehensive nutrition and should be treated in nutritional department when necessary.
Relationship between markers of malnutrition and clinical outcomes in older adults with cancer: systematic review, narrative synthesis and meta-analysis

Abstract:Abstract Malnutrition predicts poorer clinical outcomes for people with cancer. Older adults with cancer are a complex, growing population at high risk of weight-losing conditions. A number of malnutrition screening tools exist, however the best screening tool for this group is unknown. The aim was to systematically review the published evidence regarding markers and measures of nutritional status in older adults with cancer (age ≥ 70). A systematic search was performed in Ovid Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, British Nursing Database and Cochrane CENTRAL; search terms related to malnutrition, cancer, older adults. Titles, abstracts and papers were screened and quality-appraised. Data evaluating ability of markers of nutritional status to predict patient outcomes were subjected to meta-analysis or narrative synthesis. Forty-two studies, describing 15 markers were included. Meta-analysis found decreased food intake was associated with mortality (OR 2.15 [2.03–4.20] p = < 0.00001) in univariate analysis. Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) was associated with overall survival (HR 1.89 [1.03–3.48] p = 0.04). PNI markers (albumin, total lymphocyte count) could be seen as markers of inflammation rather than nutrition. There a suggested relationship between very low body mass index (BMI) (<18 kg/m 2 ) and clinical outcomes. No tool was identified as appropriate to screen for malnutrition, as distinct from inflammatory causes of weight-loss. Risk of cancer-cachexia and sarcopenia in older adults with cancer limits the tools analysed. Measures of food intake predicted mortality and should be included in clinical enquiry. A screening tool that distinguishes between malnutrition, cachexia and sarcopenia in older adults with cancer is needed.

Prospective validation of five malnutrition screening and assessment instruments among medical inpatients: Secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial

Abstract:Background & aims: Screening for malnutrition upon hospital admission is the first crucial step for proper nutritional assessment and treatment. While several nutritional screening and assessment instruments exist, there is a lack of head-to-head validation of these instruments. We studied the ability of five different nutrition screening and assessment instruments to predict 1-year mortality and response to nutritional treatment in participants of the EFFORT randomized trial. Methods: In this secondary analysis of a Swiss-wide multicenter, randomized clinical trial comparing individualized nutritional support with usual care nutrition in medical inpatients, we prospectively classified patients as low, intermediate, and high nutritional risk based on five nutritional screening and assessment instruments (NRS 2002, SGA, SNAQ, MNA and MUST). Results: Overall mortality at 1-year in the 1866 included patients was 30.4%. There were significant correlations and a significant concordance between all instruments with r-values ranging from 0.23 to 0.55 and kappa values ranging from 0.10 to 0.36. While high nutritional risk was associated with higher mortality in all instruments, SGA and MNA showed the strongest association with adjusted odds ratios of 3.17 (95%CI, 2.18 to 4.61, p < 0.001) and 3.45 (95%CI, 2.28 to 5.22, p < 0.001). When comparing mortality in intervention group patients to control group patients stratified by severity of malnutrition, there was overall no clear trend towards more benefit in patients with more severe malnutrition, with NRS 2002 and SGA showing the most pronounced relationship between the severity of malnutrition and reduction in mortality as a response to nutritional support. Conclusion: Among all five screening and assessment instruments, higher nutritional risk was associated with higher risk for mortality and adverse clinical outcome, but not with more or less treatment response from nutritional support with differences among scores. Adding more specific parameters to these instruments is important when using them to decide for or against nutritional support interventions in an individual patient. Food Insecurity Screening in High-Income Countries, Tool Validity, and Implementation: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Household food insecurity has significant negative implications across the lifespan. While routine screening is recommended, particularly in healthcare, guidelines are lacking on selection of screening tools and best-practice implementation across different contexts in non-stigmatizing ways. The objective of this scoping review was to synthesize evidence on household food insecurity screening tools, including psychometrics, implementation in a range of settings, and experiences of carrying out screening or being screened. Four electronic databases were searched for studies in English published from 1990 until June 2023. A total of 58 papers were included, 21 of which focused on tool development and validation, and 37 papers described implementation and perceptions of screening. Most papers were from the USA and described screening in healthcare settings. There was a lack of evidence regarding screening in settings utilized by Indigenous people. The two-item Hunger Vital Sign emerged as the most used and most valid tool across settings. While there is minimal discomfort associated with screening, screening rates in practice are still low. Barriers and facilitators of screening were identified at the setting, system, provider, and recipient level and were mapped onto the COM-B model of behavior change. This review identifies practical strategies to optimize screening and disclosure.

Abstract:Background: Malnutrition is pervasive in hospitalized patients and older adults. Although evidence shows the benefits of nutrition interventions in hospitalized patients, less is known about the role these interventions play on outcomes in patients in the community. Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the current evidence on nutrition interventions’ impact on health and nutrition outcomes among community-dwelling adults. Methods: This systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Original studies of previously published research were identified by using a predefined search strategy. Articles identified through electronic and manual searches were compared against predefined study selection criteria. Results: Twenty articles were deemed eligible for inclusion. Most of the studies examined nutrition interventions through oral nutritional supplements, dietary advice, counseling, and home visits, and were conducted in subjects who either had or were at risk of malnutrition. Nutrition interventions were found to improve anthropometrics (body weight), nutritional and functional status, energy and protein intake, and muscle strength (handgrip strength). However, their impact was inconclusive for body composition, quality of life, readmissions, complications/morbidity, and mortality, mainly due to a limited number of studies. Conclusion: Nutrition interventions were found to improve health and nutrition outcomes among community-dwelling adults. Future research is needed to examine the pervasiveness of malnutrition in the community, to evaluate the impact that nutrition interventions have on improving health outcomes in this population, and to inform the design of novel nutrition-focused intervention programs for adults living in different community settings to improve outcomes.
Survey of Nutritional Screening Status as Well as Dietitian to Patient Ratio in Various Healthcare Setups in India

Abstract:It’s very well documented that malnutrition is an independent risk factor that has an impact on treatment outcomes and further influences the quality of life and survivorship. Nutritional attention with timely intervention is an integral component of patient care which corresponds to improved disease outcomes. Adequate nutrition not only provides economic and physiological benefits but also ensures psychological comfort throughout the patient’s journey and during and after treatment. Evaluation of the patient’s nutritional status is critical in determining the nutritional prescription for the patient. Several studies indicate early identification of malnourished patients or at risk of malnutrition is the key to begin timely and adequate nutrition attention. This multi-centre study attempted a nationwide online survey on malnutrition screening from 19th November to 18th December 2022. Out of 644 responses received, 443 were considered for analysis, and 201 were excluded. Responses from hospitals with less than 50 beds and multiple entries from the same hospital were not considered for analysis. Out of 443 hospitals, 287 (64.7%) were accredited and 156 (35.2%) were non-accredited. It was observed in the survey that nutritional screening (NS) was performed in 361 (81.5%) hospitals out of 443. A majority (90.9%) of the accredited hospitals (n=261) undertook regular NS as opposed to government and charitable trust hospitals (n=100). For NS, 47.4% of accredited and 22.4 % of non-accredited hospitals used a single screening tool of choice. There were 26 non-accredited hospitals with no dietician service. The average number of dieticians in accredited hospitals and non-accredited hospitals were 4.4±3.94 SD and 2.3±3.93 respectively. The dietician-patient ratio in accredited and non-accredited hospitals was 1:73, and 1:212 respectively. Conclusion: Adequate and standard NS practices are lacking in both accredited and non-accredited hospitals with a poor dietitian-to-patient ratio. We propose a better dietician-patient ratio and a simple and rapid first-line tool to detect malnutrition in patients in Indian healthcare setups where there is a massive influx of patients to be matched with multifaceted socio-economic issues and fewer staff. Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is common in hospitalized patients with prevalence rates of up to 30% in Australian hospitals with adverse consequences for both the patients and health care services. Despite formulation of nutritional screening protocols, not all hospitalized patients get nutritional screening. Real life screening rates of hospitalized elderly patients are unknown.AIM: The present study explored nutrition screening rate in acutely unwell elderly patients admitted in a large tertiary hospital and how these patients fared depending upon their nutrition status.METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study involving 205 general medical patients ≥60years recruited between November 2014 and November 2015. The number of patients who missed nutrition screening were noted and all patients underwent nutritional assessment by a qualified dietitian using PG-SGA and quality of life was measured using EQ-5D 5L. A survival curve was plotted and multivariate cox proportional hazard model was used to adjust for confounders.RESULTS: Only 99 (49.7%) patients underwent nutritional screening. One hundred and six (53.5%) patients were confirmed as malnourished by PG-SGA. Malnourished patients had significantly longer length of hospital stay and had worse quality of life. Mortality was significantly higher in malnourished patients at one year (23 (21.7%) vs 4 (4.3%); p<0.001) and cox proportional hazard model suggests that malnutrition significantly affects survival even after adjustment for confounders like age, sex, Charlson index and polypharmacy.CONCLUSION: This study confirms that nutrition screening is still suboptimal in elderly hospitalized patients with adverse consequences and suggests need for review of policies to improve screening practices.

Abstract:Malnutrition during cancer has a negative impact on prognosis and quality of life. Therefore, it is important to identify those patients at higher nutritional risk to prevent its development. There are nutritional screening tools, such as MUST and NRS-2002, that focus on the patient on admission to hospital. However, most patients will develop malnutrition in the outpatient or ambulatory setting. This study aims to determine which nutritional screening tool is most effective in assessing nutritional risk in the outpatient oncology patient, highlighting the parameters analysed by these tools. Seventeen articles were reviewed, with the most important variables being tumour location, tumour stage, age, and gender, as well as recent weight loss, dietary intake, and digestive disorders. The Nutriscore, NRS-2002, and MUST tools are considered suitable, but the choice varies depending on these parameters. MNA is suitable for elderly patients, while SNAQ was not considered reliable in this population. In conclusion, MUST, NRS-2002, and Nutriscore are suitable tools, but their choice depends on specific characteristics. There is currently no universal tool for nutritional risk assessment in outpatients.

Abstract:Information on the use of validated malnutrition risk screening tools in pediatric facilities to guide malnutrition identification, diagnosis, and treatment is scarce. Therefore, a survey of pediatric healthcare facilities and practitioners to ascertain malnutrition risk screening practices in North America was conducted. A pediatric nutrition screening practices survey was developed and sent to members of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the Council for Pediatric Nutrition Professionals and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group. Respondents represented 113 pediatric hospitals in the United States and six in Canada, of which 94 were inpatient and 59 were outpatient. Nutrition risk screening was completed in 90% inpatient settings, and 63% used a validated screening tool. Nurses performed most malnutrition risk screens in the inpatient setting. Nutrition risk screening was reported in 51% of outpatient settings, with a validated screening tool being used in 53%. Measured anthropometrics were used in 78% of inpatient settings, whereas 45% used verbally reported anthropometrics. Measured anthropometrics were used in 97% outpatient settings. Nutrition risk screening was completed in the electronic health record in 80% inpatient settings and 81% outpatient settings. Electronic health record positive screen generated an automatic referral in 80% of inpatient and 45% of outpatient settings. In this sample of pediatric healthcare organizations, the results demonstrate variation in pediatric malnutrition risk screening in North America. These inconsistencies justify the need to standardize pediatric malnutrition risk screening using validated pediatric tools and allocate resources to perform screening.

Abstract:It is critical to screen and assess malnutrition in cancer patients early. However, there is no uniform standard for nutritional risk screening and malnutrition assessment. We aimed to analyze the effects of the Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002) in screening for nutritional risk among adult cancer patients, using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) as the reference standard. A systematic search was performed using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP). Studies comparing NRS2002 with PG-SGA in adult cancer patients were included. To assess the quality of the included studies, the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) was used. The combined sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated. In addition, sensitivity, subgroup, and publication bias analyses were performed. Thirteen articles involving 3,373 participants were included. The combined sensitivity, specificity, DOR, and AUC were 0.62 (95% CI, 0.60–0.64), 0.86 (95% CI, 0.84–0.88), 11.23 (95% CI, 8.26–15.27), and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.82–0.88), respectively. For adult cancer patients, NRS2002 has moderate sensitivity, high specificity, and high AUC in screening for nutritional risk.

Abstract:An attempt was made to determine whether amino acid variation at position 631 in the chicken Mx protein definitely influences antiviral specificity, using an artificial mutation technique by which a single amino acid was reciprocally substituted between Ser (AGT) and Asn (AAT) at position 631 of the negative and positive chicken Mx, respectively. Using permanently transfected 3T3 cell lines, the antiviral potential of chicken Mx against vesicular stomatitis virus infection was analysed. The results indicated that the phenotype of antiviral activity depends on the amino acid difference at position 631; that is, the genotype coding Asn at position 631 corresponds to the positive antiviral phenotype, and the genotype coding Ser corresponds to the negative phenotype. The present study has confirmed that the antiviral specificity of chicken Mx protein is determined by an amino acid substitution at the carboxy terminus.
