Abstract:In recent years, many research achievements are made in the medical image fusion field. Fusion is basically extraction of best of inputs and conveying it to the output. Medical Image fusion means that several of various modality image information is comprehended together to form one image to express its information. The aim of image fusion is to integrate complementary and redundant information. In this paper, a multimodal image fusion algorithm based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) and adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) is proposed. Fusion is achieved through the formation of a fused pyramid using the DTCWT coefficients from the decomposed pyramids of the source images. The coefficients are fused by the weighted average method based on pixels, and the weights are estimated by the APSO to gain optimal fused images. The fused image is obtained through conventional inverse dual-tree complex wavelet transform reconstruction process. Experiment results show that the proposed method based on adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm is remarkably better than the method based on particle swarm optimization. The resulting fused images are compared visually and through benchmarks such as Entropy (E), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, (PSNR), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Standard deviation (SD) and Structure Similarity Index Metric (SSIM) computations.

Abstract:Effective fusion method of remote sensing multispectral and panchromatic image must ensure maximizations of spectrum and space information. Using the fusion algorithm framework with combining HIS transformation and wavelet transform (HIS-wavelet), in this paper we propose a new method to extract high frequency coefficients and a new multispectral and panchromatic image fusion method by using multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm. According to the physical characteristics that the edge information in the high frequency has the nature of direction and noise points in the high frequency are generally isolated, a high frequency coefficient extraction method based on Gauss first order differential is proposed. The final resulting image is optimally combined by two images obtained by using different fusion rules in HIS-wavelet. Multiple fusion evaluation indicators are used as object functions and the MOPSO algorithm is used to find the optimal weights. The experiments on TM multi-spectral image and SPOT panchromatic image are carried out. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved method has a better improvement in spectral and spatial information. At the same time, the resulting image which is obtained using MOPSO algorithm has obvious advantages in retaining the spectral information and the spatial information is also greatly improved.

Abstract:For proper homoeopathic identification of the medical image, image fusion has been proposed as a mandatory solution to obtain high-spectral and high-spectral spatial data. This article presents a complete fusion system for several types of medical images according to their multi-resolution, multi-scale transforms and the Modified Central Force Optimization (MCFO) technique. Four main techniques have been proposed for this purpose; Optimized Discrete Wavelet and Dual-Tree based fusion techniques as a multi-resolution transform. Besides, the optimized Non-Sub-Sampled Contourlet and Non-Sub-Sampled Shearlet as multi-scale fusion techniques. The perfect matching between input images and minimum artifacts after image registration can be achieved through four stages in the proposed fusion algorithms. First, the input medical image is initially decomposed into their coefficients, and the MCFO method establishes the optimal gain parameter values of the resulted coefficients. Finally, the adaptive histogram equalization and the histogram matching are applied for higher clearness and better visualization of information details. The proposed algorithms are evaluated using various datasets for different medical and surveillance applications through some quality metrics. The Experimental test outcomes indicate that the proposed fusion algorithms achieve good performance with high image quality and appreciated estimation metrics principles. Moreover, it provides better image visualization and minimum processing time, which helps diagnose diseases.

Abstract:Image fusion is significant in various distinct sectors of image processing, from remote sensing to medical applications. In recent years, real-valued wavelet transforms have been utilized to fuse images. This approach has offered enhancements against various poor approaches; however, this task lacks the shift variance and suffers from the directionality connected with its wavelet bases. Moreover, the conventional architecture of this hard wavelet decomposition implements a very hard resolution of filters to attain an essential quarter shift in the coefficient result. The establishment of image fusion methodology is to provide data integrated from distinct images to avoid inconsistency and redundancy presented among the images. This approach is utilized to enhance the utilization, reliability, accuracy, and interpretation of the data with the development of image data transparency by creating an accurate and clear detail of the monitored target. In this research work, a transform-aided image fusion mechanism is utilized to enhance the effectiveness in a better way. With the support of this approach, good "peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR)" with a minimum "mean square error (MSE)" can be achieved. Therefore, this work is aimed to implement a new multi-image fusion approach by fusing the normal images. Initially, the standard normal images are manually collected for the approach. Then, the decomposition of two images in the same scene is done through "optimal non-subsampled shearlet transform (ONSST)," where the attributes of NSST are optimized with the help of recommended fitness improved puzzle optimization algorithm (FIPOA). Moreover, the high-frequency fusion is done by optimal weighted average fusion, and low-frequency fusion is carried out by filter mapping-based fusion. In the end, the inverse ONSST is taken to get the final integrated images. The experimental analysis of the recommended approach is evaluated with various performance measures. The validation shows that the developed model attains 44.7%, 6.18%, 17.4%, 17.4%, and 9.7% enhanced performance than DOX-ONSST, AOA-ONSST, SFO-ONSST, and POA-ONSST in terms of standard deviation. The experimental analysis of the developed model shows better performance rather than the existing approaches. The image fusion is widely applicable in the field of clinical and healthcare applications.

Abstract:Introduction: Image Fusion techniquesconsist of three stages: extraction of features, reduction of dimensions, and classification. Problem: This paper presents a novel approach for Multiresolution analysis. Objective: It is most widely used in image fusion science, which captures the features of an image not only at different resolutions, but also at different orientations. Methodology: This Wavelet based algorithm has additional advantages of fast implementation, versatility, auxiliary memory saving, complete reconstruction properties and simplicity as wavelet transformation was used. Results: The simulation results of the MRI and CT images show perfectly acceptable image quality and cover disease detection in the subsequent final image. Conclusion: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on fusion algorithms will empower medical researchers or clinicians to properly apply image fusion and data transmission, which leads to better care practices to minimize redundancies and can also handle data loss. Originality: Fusing images can decrease the image size, which can decrease the bandwidth when transmitting images. This also compresses the images; here an attempt is made to retain the same consistency. Limitations: As this is still a relatively novel method, mistakes with regard to the handling of clinical data may prompt treatment deficiencies for the patient. Abstract:Medical image fusion is a synthesis of visual information present in any number of medical imaging inputs into a single fused image without any distortion or loss of detail. It enhances image quality by retaining specific features to improve the clinical applicability of medical imaging for treatment and evaluation of medical conditions. A big challenge in the processing of medical images is to incorporate the pathological features of the complement into one image. The fused image presents various challenges, such as existence of fusion artifacts, hardness of the base, comparison of medical image input, and computational cost. The techniques of hybrid multimodal medical image fusion (HMMIF) have been designed for pathologic studies, such as neurocysticercosis, degenerative and neoplastic diseases. Two domain algorithms based on HMMIF techniques have been developed in this research for various medical image fusion applications for MRI-SPECT, MRI-PET, and MRI-CT. NSCT is initially used in the proposed method to decompose the input images which give components of low and high frequency. The average fusion rule applies to NSCT components with low frequency. The NSCT high frequency components are fused by the law of full fusion. NSCTs high frequency is handled with directed image filtration scheme. The fused picture is obtained by taking inverse transformations from all frequency bands with the coefficients obtained from them. The methods suggested are contrasted with traditional approaches in the state of the art. Experimentation proves that the methods suggested are superior in terms of both qualitative and quantitative assessment. The fused images using proposed algorithms provide information useful for visualizing and understanding the diseases to the best of both sources' modality.

Abstract:Wavelets with their multiresolution property, have been proved to be effective in the integrating of the coarse features and finer resolution details of source images to produce a good fused image. The theory of rough sets has emerged as a major mathematical approach for managing uncertainty that arises from inexact, noisy, or incomplete information. Image fusion algorithm using rough sets and wavelet analysis is proposed in this paper. Multifocus images are enhanced using rough sets, then fused them using Db4 wavelet. The proposed fusion scheme is examined on images which are contaminated by salt-pepper noise. Entropy is used to evaluate image quality. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the image fusion algorithm.
A Novel Hybrid Multimodal Medical Image Fusion Scheme Based on Non-subsampled Shearlet Transform

Abstract:A novel hybrid fusion scheme is proposed by employing non-subsampled shearlet transform (NSST) and stationary wavelet transform (SWT). In the preliminary stage, multimodal input images are putrefied comprehensively by NSST. The regional energy as an activity parameter is used to fuse the high-frequency sub-band coefficients of NSST. The approximation sub-band of NSST is fused using SWT. The maximum entropy of the squared coefficients and regional energy as the activity parameters are employed to fuse the LF and HF sub-bands of SWT, respectively. This step is explicitly performed for preserving contrast, edges, texture and brightness information within the image. The final output is taken by employing the inverse NSST. The research is verified both qualitatively and quantitatively from the fused images. It is seen that the suggested methodology obtained enriched results of the textural details such as divergence, boundaries, consistency and brightness of any of the brain intracranial masses (tumor or stroke or haemorrhage or even fungal infection). It is further observed that the morphology of the associated intracranial mass and the minimum path distance during invasive surgery along with the bone are prerequisites for the radiologist and are better depicted by the present method (as per the radiologist’s perception). The fusion performance parameters of the suggested technique are related to seven existing methods. The quantitative evaluation of the proposed algorithm is done using mutual information, edge information index, entropy, standard deviation and mean. The parametric values obtained in any of the publicly available datasets or real-time datasets gave assuring outcomes.

Abstract:A novel algorithm for the multimodalities medical images fusion based on wavelet transform has been proposed and implemented. The auto-adaptive weighted coefficients have been calculated recursively to maximize the mutual information between the source image and the result image. Adopting multi-resolution analysis of wavelet transform, we achieved the MRI and CT image fusion. In addition, the new algorithm has been extended to MRI and color image fusion. The experiment results demonstrate that the new algorithm with wavelet transform have better fusion result's compared with other mutual information fusion schemes without wavelet transform.

Abstract:In view of the serious color and definition distortion in the process of the traditional image fusion, this study proposes a Haar-like multi-scale analysis model, in which Haar wavelet has been modified and used for the medical image fusion to obtain even better results. Firstly, when the improved Haar wavelet basis function is translated, inner product and down-sampled with each band of the original image, the band is decomposed into four sub-images containing one low-frequency subdomain and three high-frequency subdomains. Secondly, the different fusion rules are applied in the low-frequency domain and the high-frequency domains to get the low-frequency sub-image and the high-frequency sub-images in each band. The four new sub-frequency domains are inverse-decomposed to reconstruct each new band. The study configures and synthesizes these new bands to produce a fusion image. Lastly, the two groups of the medical images are used for experimental simulation. The Experimental results are analyzed and compared with those of other fusion methods. It can be found the fusion method proposed in the study obtain the superior effects in the spatial definition and the color depth feature, especially in color criteria such as OP, SpD, CR and SSIM, comparing with the other methods.

Abstract:Medical image fusion (MIF) techniques are proficient in combining medical images in distinct morphologies to obtain a reliable medical analysis. A single modality image could not offer adequate data for an accurate analysis. Therefore, a novel multimodal MIF-based artificial intelligence (AI) method has been presented. MIF approaches fuse multimodal medical images for exact and reliable medical recognition. Multimodal MIF improves diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making by combining complementary data in different imaging modalities. This article presents a new multimodal medical image fusion model utilizing Modified DWT with an Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (MMIF-MDWTAOA) approach. The MMIF-MDWTAOA approach aims to generate a fused image with the significant details and features from each modality, leading to an elaborated depiction for precise interpretation by medical experts. The bilateral filtering (BF) approach is primarily employed for noise elimination. Next, the image decomposition process uses a modified discrete wavelet transform (MDWT) approach. However, the approximation coefficient of modality_1 and the detailed coefficient of modality_2 can be fused interchangeably. Furthermore, a fusion rule is derived from combining the multimodality data, and the AOA model is enforced to ensure the optimum selection of the fusion rule parameters. A sequence of simulations is accomplished to validate the enhanced output of the MMIF-MDWTAOA technique. The investigational validation of the MMIF-MDWTAOA technique showed the highest entropy values of 7.568 and 7.741 bits/pixel over other approaches.

Abstract:Summary Medical image fusion has advanced to the point that it is now possible to combine multiple medical images for accurate disease diagnosis and treatment. The state‐of‐art techniques based on spatial and transform domains suffer from different limitations such as low fused image quality, spectral degradation, contrast reduction, low edge information preserving, lack of shift‐invariance, high computational complexity, classification accuracy, and sensitivity to noise. The main motivation of this work is to generate a single image with excellent visual clarity that retains the features of the source images. This article proposes a water wave optimized nonsubsampled shearlet transformation technique (NSST) for multimodal medical image fusion, in which the water wave optimization (WWO) algorithm is used to allocate the weights of the NSST approach's high‐frequency subbands. The NSST approach is primarily used in this work due to its ability to withstand shift‐invariance and its potential to improve the visual clarity of the fused multimodal image by preserving the essential features present in the image's various directions and edges. We combined the NSST technique with the WWO algorithm, which processes the edges, details, and contourlets of medical images using a max selection strategy based on the fitness function, to improve image quality and computational costs. The WWO algorithm is mainly applied to the NSST to minimize the L1 distance between the fused and the source images. Hence to overcome this problem a condition CNN optimized with a hybrid tunicate swarm memetic (TSM) algorithm is used to incorporate both the benefits offered by the condition CNN–TSM algorithm and NSST. The TSM optimized condition CNN architecture is used to preserve the coefficients of the image and improve the perceiving capability of the high‐frequency sub‐bands. An inverse NSST is used for fused frequency sub‐band integration. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed methodology is evaluated in terms of enhanced visual feature quality, edge detection, contour detection, and computational performance.

Abstract:In traditional image fusion, source images are separated into a fixed space. The low-frequency part and the high-frequency part are not discriminated according to the nature of the image. Traditional fusion rules often use a fixed proportion, causing colour distortion. In this study, a new adaptive decomposition algorithm is proposed to distinguish high frequency and low frequency of structure image to obtain smoothing layer and texture layer. The smoothing layer of the structural image and the colour information of the function image are fused according to dynamic rules, and then the texture layer is added. On the basis of the objective evaluation metrics, the spectral information evaluation metrics are introduced to evaluate the retention of colour. In the experiments, the proposed method is compared with other six classical image fusion methods. The experiment results show that the proposed method can retain the colour information and structure information very well at the same time. Concerning subjective and objective evaluation, the proposed algorithm is superior to other algorithms.

Abstract:Multi-modal medical image fusion has emerged as a famous and efficient tool in medical applications. The major goal of this fusion is to fuse diverse multi-modal medical images attained from varied imaging modalities into a single fused image, which is broadly utilized by surgeons for the precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Multi-modal medical images generally consist of captured images with the specific organ of a patient. These images will indicate a modality, which will provide the observed organ in a different way that leads to dissimilar examinations of a specific incident like stroke. The detection with more suitable clinical decisions is taken by the accurate analysis of each modality. Multi-modal medical imaging is an efficient research area that incorporates the improvement of robust techniques, which can facilitate the information of image fusion attained with diverse sets of modalities. The major goal of this paper is to develop the multi-modal medical image fusion model using the new hybrid meta-heuristic approach. At first, the high-frequency sub-bands and low frequency sub-bands of the images that to be fused split by the weighted fast discrete curvelet transform (W-FDCuT). Once the sub-bands are split, the high-frequency sub-bands of the two images are fused by the optimized Type-2 fuzzy entropy. On the other hand, Averaging approach is used for performing the fusion of low frequency sub-bands. Finally, the inverse W-FDCuT is done for generating the final fused image. To improvise the performance of W-FDCuT and Type-2 fuzzy entropy, the hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm named hybrid jaya with sun flower optimization (HJ-SFO) is adopted, thus enhances the significant parameters by maximizing the structural similarity index measure (SSIM). The comparison over the conventional image fusion models proves the efficiency of the proposed model in terms of diverse analysis.

Abstract:Medical image fusion of images obtained via different modes can expand the inherent information of original images, whereby the fused image has a superior ability to display details than the original sub-images, to facilitate diagnosis and treatment selection. In medical image fusion, an inherent challenge is to effectively combine the most useful information and image details without information loss. Despite the many methods that have been proposed, the effective retention and presentation of information proves challenging. Therefore, we proposed and evaluated a novel image fusion method based on the discrete stationary wavelet transform (DSWT) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). First, we analyze the details or feature information of two images to be processed by DSWT by using two-level decomposition to separate each image into seven parts, comprising both high-frequency and low-frequency sub-bands. Considering the gradient and energy attributes of the target, we substituted the pending parts in the same position in the two images by using the proposed enhanced RBFNN. The input, hidden, and output layers of the neural network comprised 8, 40, and 1 neuron(s), respectively. From the seven neural networks, we obtained seven fused parts. Finally, through inverse wavelet transform, we obtained the final fused image. For the neural network training method, the hybrid adaptive gradient descent algorithm (AGDA) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) were implemented. The final experimental results revealed that the novel method has significantly better performance than the current state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:The key problem of multi-modal image fusion is that the complementary features of the source images are easily lose in the fusion. In this paper, the fusion algorithm is proposed with the hybrid ℓ 0 ℓ 1 layer decomposing and multi-directional filter banks to extract edge, contour, and detail features from images and fuse the complementary features well. First, the hybrid ℓ 0 ℓ 1 layer decomposing is ability to effectively overcome halo artifacts and over-enhancement, when the detail features are eliminated, so the low-frequency and detail features of the source images are separated. Then, the visual salient detection based on ant colony optimisation and local phase coherenceis is introduced to guide the fusion of the base lay images. Then the detail image is decomposed by using multi-directional filter banker, and the different direction detail features are extracted, and the fusion rule multi-directional gradient and principal component analysis are adopted for the detail sub-band images to prevent the loss of detail features. Finally, the final fused image is reconstructed by the inverse transformation of the hybrid ℓ 0 ℓ 1 layer decomposing. Experimental results demonstrate that the values of the spatial frequency, the the standard deviation, the edge strength,the difference seminary index, and the difference structural similarity are increased significantly, so the proposed fusion algorithm can effectively preserve the complementary information between images and improve the quality of fused images.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer technology and the advent of the information age, diverse medical imaging devices are emerging. However, limited by imaging principles, single-mode images have their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is difficult to fully express all practical information, causing the limitations of diagnosis. Accordingly, medical image fusion is inevitable trend which could integrate or highlight the complementary information, achieve enhanced image quality, reduce redundancy, and provide a reliable diagnosis. In the past, there were many methods that were proposed, but the effect was largely dependent on the experimental data. Based on this, in this study, we proposed a new image fusion method based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and fuzzy radial basis function neural network (FRBFNN). Here, we used a 2- level decomposition, so that each image was decomposed into 7 parts including high frequency sub-bands and low frequency sub-bands. Subsequently, for the parts of the same position of the two images, we substituted them to the proposed FRBFNN. So, with the operation of these seven neural networks, we obtained seven fused parts in turn. Finally, through the inverse wavelet transform, we could get the final fused image. For the training method of neural network, we adopted the combination of error backpropagation algorithm and gravity search algorithm. The final experimental results demonstrated that our method performed significantly better than other algorithms.

Abstract:Multi-modal medical image fusion brings many benefits to clinical diagnosis and analysis because it creates favorable conditions for diagnostic imaging practitioners to make a more accurate diagnosis. According to our current knowledge, there are still some disadvantages to current image fusion approaches. The first one is that the fused images often have low contrast. The reason for this is several approaches use a weighted average rule for fusing low-frequency components. The second drawback is that the loss of detailed information in the fused image. This can be explained by the fact that the high-frequency components synthesized by the rules are not really effective. In this paper, two novel algorithms are proposed to tackle the above two disadvantages. The first algorithm is based on the Equilibrium optimizer algorithm (EOA) to find optimal parameters to fuse low-frequency components. This allows the fused image to have good contrast. The second algorithm is based on the sum of local energy functions using the Prewitt compass operator to create an efficient rule for the fusion of high-frequency components. This allows the fused image to significantly preserve details transferred from input images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach not only effective in significantly enhancing the quality of the fusion image but also preserving edge information carried from input images.

Abstract:A physics-based explanation of image fusion is proposed in this paper. Multiwavelet transform offers simultaneous orthogonality, symmetry, compact support, and vanishing moment, which are not possible with scalar wavelet transform. In the case of multiwavelet, there are more than one different coefficient detail blocks in the same direction and in the same resolution. Objectives of image fusion schemes extract all useful information from the source images. In this paper, optical image and IR image are fused using multiwavelets and scalar wavelet. Image fusion performances of Db4 scalar wavelet, GHM multiwavelet, and CL multiwavelet are compared quantitatively. Experimental results demonstrate that the fused image entropy using CL multiwavelet is the maximum in all fused images.

Abstract:A novel fusion method for optical image and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image using balanced multiwavelet transform is proposed to fuse optical image and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image, and the multiwavelet function of the orthogonal balanced multiwavelet constructed are symmetric and asymmetric, respectively. This image fusion algorithm is compared quantitatively with Db4 scalar wavelet's, GHM multiwavelet's, and CL4 multiwavelet's using entropy as a performance evaluation criteria of image fusion. Experimental results demonstrate that the balanced multiwavelet image fusion algorithm which increments entropy max outperforms other multiwavelets-based and scalar wavelet-based fusion algorithms. Fused image using. balanced multiwavelet is suitable for human visual system and image edges can be preserved well using. this image fusion algorithm.
