Abstract:Since the debate between Lu Xun's "indigenous theory" and Hu Shi's "exotic theory" on the origin of the image of Sun Wukong, there has been nearly a hundred years of academic discussion. Scholars from various schools have conducted a large number of beneficial studies and reached well-founded conclusions. However, due to the unique nature of Journey to the West as a work that has been accumulated across generations and carries a distinct historical sediment, the controversy surrounding it has always been at an impasse, with no consensus reached. Based on previous studies, this paper will provide an overview of the mainstream theories within the academic community. It will then conduct etymological and dialectical analysis of the character of Sun Wukong from the perspective of the "indigenous theory", thus demonstrating the high plausibility of the indigenous viewpoint.

Abstract:This paper examines the symbolism of the cultural image Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), a Chinese legendary hero, and how it influenced an eight-year-old boy's psychic development. Through an analysis of Sun Wukong's life from his birth to attaining Buddhahood, a three-phase healing process is identified in Sun Wukong's tale and the psychotherapeutic process: "naming and initiating," "nurturing and taming," and "transforming and transcending," proposed by Dr. Heyong Shen. Sandplay visually highlighted these key clinical changes in conscious awareness and developmental behaviour influencing the boy's individuation process. Images found either in cultural traditions or spontaneously emerging from the unconscious in individuals are of significance in human life, offering pathways to psychic healing and development. Further, myths and cultural resources used in clinical work demonstrate that having cultural competency is invaluable in Jungian analysis. Pathogenic and health-maintenance factors of culture can be explored in future clinical practice and research.

Abstract:Up to this date, the study on the cultural factors which is amalgamated in the prototype of Sun Wukong’s image is not satisfactory. Chiyou is one of the factors amalgamated in the prototype of Sun Wukong’s image, while people paid not enough attenion to the influence on the creation of Sun Wukong’s image. In My opinion, in the writter’s reation of Sun Wukong, Chiyou’s mythical image and stories affected the reation of Sun Wukong’s image. In this paper, this opinion is based on three evidences. The first one is the external feature, which is called “铜头铁额(copper head and iron forehead)”, the second one is the similarity between Chiyou and Sun Wukong’s achievement (from resisting, being stifled to obtain the designation of Mars), the third is the similarity between Sun Wukong’s taking a fancy to the weapon and Chiyou’s invention of original weapon in Chinese history, and the ability of contorlling the wind, the rain, the cloud and the thunder.

Abstract:The classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, written by Wú Chéng’ēn in the 16th century of the Ming Dynasty, is an influential work in Chinese culture. The main character of the novel, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, has become a highly popular character and been adapted into various cultural products. Sun Wukong’s popularity was adapted into three films directed by Cheang Pou-soi, namely Monkey King 1 (2014), Monkey King 2 (2016), and Monkey King 3 (2018). This article analyzes the reconfiguration of Sun Wukong in the films based on the monomyth schemes by Joseph Campbell, focusing on the construction of Sun Wukong’s heroic journey and his hybridity visualization that is closely related to his transformation from an archetypal hero who represents the principle of the “Three Teachings in One” to a modern superhero who represents social and individual values in the “Twelve Core Values of Chinese Socialism”. Through the archetypal theme of the journey, hybridity visualization, and a set of values associated with Sun Wukong, this article tries to analyze the transformation of his heroism from a classic hero into a modern superhero. The re-contextualization of this transformation to the contemporary China’s situation reflects the spirit of China today and its long journey from traditionalism to modernity.

Abstract:The Western tragic heroes, who are often destinguished persons with definite will to challenge, can actively take action, dominate the situation, bring fatal destruction to the enemy at the cost of great pains for themselves; the disasterous end, which is out of their own choice, is the fulfillment of their own will without much regret, therefore poetic justice is not needed. The Chinese tragic heroes, who are often kind-hearted weak persons without will to challenge, are not even well-prepared to protect themselves; without active measures, they can not attack the enemy efficiently, so they have to suffer passively; the disasterous result is caused by external forces, against their own will, therefore poetic justice is needed to pacify the anger in the readers' mind. The different fortunes of poetic justice in China and Western ccountries have deep roots in their culture, showing different relations between happiness and virtue.

Abstract:The ‘Journey to the West’, also translated as the’ Pilgrimage to the West’, is one of the masterpieces of ancient Chinese literature. Published anonymously by the putative author Wu Cheng'en in the late 16th century, the story traces in broad outline the journey taken by the monk Tripitaka in the year 629 a.D. to India to acquire Buddhist scriptures, and it is the result of reworking antecedent works, such as ‘Poetic notes on the pilgrimage of Tripitaka of the Great Tang to acquire the Sutras’ and ‘‹Journey to the West› Opera’. In this fiction, the writer moves away from the authenticity of the traditional pilgrimage: here the monk is escorted by sinful-followers (i.e., a dragon-horse, a pig, a demon, and a monkey) capable of removing malevolent beings throughout the journey. Sun Wukong is the wild and skillful monkey that ascends to Buddhity, becoming a ‘Victorious Fighting Buddha’ at the end of the literary work. Later on, the Chinese work of fiction was used as a source of inspiration for the creation of Dragon Ball, a Japanese fantasy & martial arts manga. Published in 1984 as a manga and then adapted into an anime, Dragon Ball sketchily follows the Chinese work of fiction. After coming across Bulma, young Son Gokū decides to escort the girl in her quest to collect seven magic dragon spheres. The series’ success allowed the manga’s author, Akira Toriyama, to continue the story arc and launch a new series in 2015. Since 1986, several videogames with a monkey character have entered the market. The purpose of this article is to highlight the main affinities between Sun Wukong and his Japanese counterpart Son Gokū first, and then attempt to explain how the monkey character has become a world-famous symbol, and contextualise it into the phenomenon of ‘worldwide pilgrimage’.

Abstract:This paper makes an exploration of the relationship between the folk and the enlightening and Lao She the author's psychlogy of writing , which underlines the text of A Camel of Xiangzi. Symbolically, the novel has an implicit structure, namely, a man's path of downfall. In Xiangzi's struggle against the fate, Hunu and Ruan Ming acted only as the roles of lure of the web respectively. And a hierarchic interpretation of the image of Hunu in the novel's explicit structure reveals the rich implication and immortal charm of Hunu as an artistic image both in the folk form and in the real sense of human nature. However, the novel leaves something to be desirable in the later part. As a member of townpeople, Lao She goes beyond his limitations when he describes Xiangzi's charge at the political web. Although he is bitterly critical about the townpeople, he is not likely to create a distillation of spirit.

Abstract:This paper discusses the external image and internal spirit of Kong Yiji from Lu Xun's works "Kong Yiji". Moreover, why he chose to leave at the end of the day to explore how the author used special literary techniques to create and highlight the characters. Kong Yiji was a victim of the imperial examination system in the Qing Dynasty. He spent his life in the Four Books and the Five Classics and was reduced to begging and refusing to take off his long gown, which symbolized his status as a scholar. Speaking of classical Chinese words, he emphasized several times that he was a scholar, even teased by others, but also pretentious, self-admiration. Feudal culture and feudal education poisoned Kong Yiji and made him develop the bad habits of despising labor and being indolence. Through the exploration and study of words, sentences and paragraphs in the text, from different positions and perspectives, from external to internal, the character characteristics and behavior of the characters before and after the comparison, in-depth analysis of a diversified and complex character image. Kong Yiji was not only an aristocratic and intellectual scholar but also a cowardly and helpless scholar who was poisoned by feudal society. His body not only shined with the light of honest and good human nature but also had a lazy, self-deceiving national bad nature.

The Relationship between the Mad Imagery in Lu Xun’s “the Eternal Lamp” and Taoist Philosophy of Life

Abstract:Lu Xun’s works have always been one of the key research topics, and many researchers focus on the relationship between Lu Xun and Taoism. However, there is still a gap in the study of linking his crazy imagery with Taoism. Therefore, this paper takes “The Eternal Lamp” as an example to analyze the relationship between the madman image and the Taoist philosophy of life. Firstly, the paper points out the unique significance of the image of the madman in “The Eternal Lamp” and then explores the connection between his character image and Taoism in order to obtain Lu Xun’s attitude towards traditional religion. The study argues that Lu Xun unconsciously inherited the positive aspects of the Taoist philosophy of life in shaping his literary image, especially drawing on the prominent power of the subject’s personality. Future academic research can focus on studying traditional philosophy and religion in Lu Xun’s novels, which can help provide a comprehensive understanding of Lu Xun and his works.

Abstract:Abstract A little-studied aspect of the Monkey character 孫悟空 (Sun Wukong) in Wu Cheng'en's 吳承恩 Xiyou ji 西遊記 (Journey to the West) is his identity in terms of category of being, that is, how he fits into and rebels against the cosmic system of the ranking and classifying of beings that governs the novel. He is a human-like monkey, who is also an aspiring immortal, who was once a miscreant demon, who moreover never completely sheds his demon-like behavior. Journey to the West pays particular attention to the taxonomy of beings, which therefore needs a more detailed examination than has appeared so far, including a look at the lists of categories that Journey to the West applies. A deep sense of category envy and species rivalry courses through the novel, which underlies both the conflicts that Monkey initiates and the ones he meets head on. Two types of being, immortal (xian 仙) and demon (yao 妖), are in special need of unfolding. Originating in ancient times, they remain as expansive and malleable as ever in Journey to the West, in which Monkey alternates between the two even after his subjugation.
