Abstract:Catalytic performances of Mn2O3 nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation were comprehensively investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that 10 mg/L BPA could be 100% degraded within 20 min with the dosages of 0.2 g/L Mn2O3 and 0.1 mM PMS. Moreover, Mn2O3 showed remarkable activity in activation of PMS and excellent adaptability in various real water matrices, including river water, tap water and secondary effluents. Based on the radical detection and scavenging experiments, it was found that both radical and non-radical oxidation contributed to the degradation of BPA and O-1(2) was the dominant species in the degradation compared to (OH)-O-center dot, SO4 center dot- and O-2(center dot-). A total of 15 transformation products were identified by LC/MS-MS during BPA degradation in the Mn2O3/PMS system, and degradation pathways via three routes are proposed. Compared with lab-made catalysts reported in the literature, the Mn2O3 catalyst demonstrated its superiority in terms of its high TOC removal, low PMS consumption and fast degradation rate for BPA.

Abstract:To gain a deeper understanding of the roles of N-doping in nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-based catalysts for persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), five catalysts, biochar (BC), N-doped biochar (NBC), nZVI, nZVI-loaded pristine biochar () and nZVI-loaded N-doped biochar (), were prepared for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). Because of the synergy between nZVI and NBC, exhibited a better catalytic ability and possessed more active species in PDS activation. Mechanisms were proposed including radical pathways (HO• and SO4•−) and nonradical pathways (1O2). PDS activation by Fe0 generated radicals while graphitic N, pyridinic N and CO in were employed for 1O2 generation. In addition, showed a high anti-interference capacity and stability. The analysis of the intermediates produced by the degradation of BPA confirmed that HO•, SO4•− and 1O2 are involved in the reaction of the system. Our research provides a new perspective on the synergistic effect of nZVI and N-doped materials in AOPs for endocrine disrupter degradation.

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.
N-doped biochar mediated peroxydisulfate activation for selective degradation of bisphenol A: The key role of potential difference-driven electron transfer mechanism

Abstract:N-doped biochar has emerged as a promising material for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation to degrade organic pollutants; however, its reaction mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we synthesized N-doped piggery biogas residue biochar (NBRBC) and investigated an NBRBC-mediated PDS activation system for contaminants degradation. The experimental results show that the NBRBC/PDS system exhibits superior activity for selective degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) via an electron transfer pathway (ETP) but does not work for the degradation of bisphenol S (BPS) and hexafluorobisphenol A (BPAF). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the removal efficiencies of contaminants are highly related to the potential difference (E PD ) between the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of contaminants and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the NBRBC/PDS system (R 2 = 0.9568). Contaminants with low E PD (e.g., BPA) were more easily degraded via ETP, while the oxidation of high E PD contaminants (e.g., BPS, BPAF) was inert to ETP. In addition, N-doping process endowed NBRBC with superior PDS activation activity by lowering the E HOMO −E LUMO gap of the NBRBC/PDS system, thereby accelerating electron transfer. Graphitic carbon, pyridinic N and graphitic N are regarded as the predominant active sites. Our NBRBC/PDS system also possessed resistance to the interference of water matrix and efficient mineralization capacity during BPA degradation. This work further clarified the in-depth mechanism of PDS activation over N-doped biochar catalysts, unraveled the mysterious selective degradation behavior of the NBRBC/PDS system toward BPA, and provides a novel perspective for developing a "fit-for-purpose" strategy for organic wastewater purification.

The contents of different N species, especially Co-N-x and graphitic N sites, were tuned by different calcination temperatures (800, 900, and 1000 degrees C). Characterization results demonstrated that hollow polyhedron with high graphitization degree and abundant porosity anchored numerous Co nanoparticles, which could enhance the catalytic performance. Compared to other as-prepared catalysts, Co/HNCP-900 (pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C) showed a more outstanding performance of PMS activation towards BPA degradation, and 95.1 % of BPA (20 mg/L) could be removed within 3 min. Abundant Co-Nx sites were a critical factor to induce the reaction process. Based on trapping, radical scavenger, and electrochemical analysis experiments, a nonradical process (singlet oxygen and direct electron transfer) was proposed to play the dominant role in BPA degradation. Benefiting from the nonradical process, BPA degradation efficiency almost remained stable either in a wide pH range (2.5-8.0) or in the presence of coexisting ions and natural organic matter. The findings of this study will elucidate a new opportunity for improving environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived Co3O4/NiCo2O4 double-shelled nanocages (DSNCs) were fabricated and utilized as catalysts to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for bisphenol A (BPA) de-gradation. The results showed that Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs exhibited superior BPA degradation performance over Co3O4 NCs and NiCo2O4 NCs. PDS combined with the interfaces of both the Co3O4 inner shell and NiCo2O4 outer shell to form complex, inducing the nonradical oxidation of BPA by electron abstraction. The double shelled hollow structure helped to increase the instantaneous concentration of reactants in the void space of Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs, thus promoting the decomposition of BPA. The Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs had high selectivity for BPA degradation and were resistant to halogens and background organic matter in wastewater. Our work indicated that metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanomaterials with a hollow structure have a promising application prospect for persulfate-based advanced oxidation technology.

Abstract:The development of novel carbon-based catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has attracted extensive attention in the Advance oxidation process (AOPs) for the removal of organic pollutants in water. In this study, using different amino acids as raws to prepare two kinds of N-doping catalysts with different morphology and structure: , , and possess the 1D structure of bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) while form the 3D structure of Fe/Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped graphite-like carbon nanosheets with the entangled CNTs. The /PMS exhibited the highest degradation efficiency of BPA compared with other catalysts because the 3D structure shows a bigger pore volume with a high specific surface area than the 1D structure, which facilitated the transfer of substances and the exposure of more active sites. Meanwhile, with strong magnetic properties was easily recovered from the reaction solution. By quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance trapping and electrochemical characterization, the mechanisms of the system for BPA degradation were primarily a non-radical process of electron transfer and 1O2. This study will elicit critical insights into the structure design of high-performance carbon-based catalysts for PMS activation in environment applications.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C3N4 and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method. The as-prepared Fe-NS@C exhibited excellent performance for complete removal of BPA (20 mg/L) by activating PMS with the high kinetic constant (1.492 min-1) in 15 min. Besides, the Fe-NS@C/PMS system not only possessed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to environmental interference, but also maintained an excellent degradation efficiency on different pollutants. Impressively, increased S-C3N4 doping amount modulated the contents of different N species in Fe-NS@C, and the catalytic activity of Fe-NS@C-1-x was visibly enhanced with increasing S-C3N4 contents, verifying pyridine N and Fe-Nx as main active sites in the system. Meanwhile, thiophene sulfur (C-S-C) as active sites played an auxiliary role. Furthermore, quenching experiment, EPR analysis and electrochemical test proved that surface-bound radicals (·OH and SO4⋅-) and non-radical pathways worked in the BPA degradation (the former played a dominant role). Finally, possible BPA degradation route were proposed. This work provided a promising way to synthesize the novel Fe, N and S co-doping carbon catalyst for degrading organic pollutants with low metal leaching and high catalytic ability.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials hold considerable potential in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for environmental remediation. To fabricate highly efficient and cost-effective catalysts, renewable tannin was co-pyrolyzed with urea to achieve both efficient nitrogen doping and oxygen self-doping. The synergetic effect of N and O functional groups, combined with a well-developed porous structure, resulted in the development of N-enriched, O-functionalized porous carbon materials (NOPC) that exhibit exceptional catalytic activity in PMS activation for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. As for the optimized NOPC-700/PMS system, the removal efficiency of BPA can reach up to 97.2% with a TOC removal efficiency of 78%. Control experiments, characterization results, and DFT calculations confirmed the prominent contribution of both the graphitic N and carbonyl group (CO) to the catalytic performance of NOPC. In addition, the applicability of NOPC was evaluated via varying influential factors, changing the targeted organic pollutant, and altering the water matrix. Furthermore, it was found that the main ROSs generated from PMS activation could be altered by incorporating N into the carbon catalysts. Overall, this work will provide a straightforward approach to designing highly efficient carbon catalysts with great potential in catalytic AOPs for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped biochar encapsulating Fe/Mn nanoparticles (Fe/Mn@NBC800) was synthesized as a cost-effective catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards the degradation of bisphenol-A (BPA). Superior catalytic performance of Fe/Mn@NBC800 was observed as BPA was completely degraded within 20 min and with a reaction rate 75.88-fold higher than that of pristine biochar. This observation ascribed to redox cycles between Fe and Mn with multivalent states and nitrogen functionalization in Fe/Mn@NBC800, accelerating the electronic migration in the activation of PMS. Further investigation indicated radical pathways, especially SO4 − and OH serve a predominant role in the oxidative decomposition of BPA. Also, O2 − and non-radical (1O2) assumed an indispensable role in this process. Environmental factors had little effect on the synergistic process of radical and non-radical. The potential BPA degradation pathway was inferred by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation and intermediates analysis. In terms of excellent separability, reusability, stability, and universality, Fe/Mn@NBC800 exhibited promising application prospects.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon materials have been one of the most remarkable families of materials with promising applications in many fields. In this study, a series of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes frameworks (NCNTFs) with distinguishable nitrogen content and graphitization degree have been successfully prepared through in situ transformation of ZIF-67 under N2/H2 atmosphere at different pyrolysis temperature. Compared with conventional nitrogen-doped carbon materials derived from metal-organic frameworks, the formation of intertwined carbon nanotubes harvests desirable mesoporous structure that is favorable for the mass transfer and diffusion of reaction substances. When they are applied for catalytic degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), NCNTFs-800 (pyrolyzed at 800 °C) promises higher BPA removal efficiency than its counterparts from other pyrolysis temperature, as well as porous carbon derived from ZIF-8. Radical-quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements verify that non-radical process (1O2) dominates BPA degradation over NCNTFs-800, and some common radicals (such as OH, SO4 − and O2 −) only play auxiliary roles. It is believed that the good balance between surface graphitic nitrogen sites and graphitization degree is responsible for the enhanced catalytic performance, and facilitates electron transfer from BPA to PMS to induce the non-radical pathways. Besides, some potential influential factors, including catalyst/Oxone dosage and reaction temperature are investigated, and the effects of anions, humic acid, and actual wastewater on BPA degradation are also elucidated in detail. Finally, several intermediates are identified by GC–MS analysis and the possible degradation pathways are deduced tentatively.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation based on persulfate (PS) activation presents one of the most promising methods to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to deal with the increasing environmental contamination. However, the half-life periods of most ROS generated from PS activation are quite short. To this end, using bimetallic amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as both a precursor and a template yields functional N-doped carbonaceous hybrid nanorods (FeCo-NC) are synthesized, characterized, and studied. The results demonstrate FeCo-NC600 can effectively dissociate persulfate into ROS to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) in absence of heat and light owing to the well-defined structure and metal coordination provided by pristine MOFs and N-doped carbon network. In the FeCo-NC600/PS system, BPA achieved a complete removal in 20 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.2876 min−1, and about 85% of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal was observed. In addition, the catalyst can be reused without significant loss in activity. Further studies reveal the contribution of surface bound sulfate radical, surface bound hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen in BPA degradation. Meanwhile, a surface reaction mechanism is proposed, it can achieve the simultaneous generation of ROS on the catalytic site and efficient degradation of BPA on the adsorption site, thereby reducing the migration distance of ROS and excellently overcome the problem of short half-life of ROS, further improving the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA), representing a class of organic pollutants, finds extensive applications in the pharmaceutical industry. However, its widespread use poses a significant hazard to both ecosystem integrity and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) via heterogeneous catalysts are frequently proposed for treating persistent pollutants. In this study, the degradation performance of BPA in an oxidation system of PMS activated by transition metal sites anchored nitrogen-doped carbonaceous substrate (M-N-C) materials was investigated. As heterogeneous catalysts targeting the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), M-N-C materials emerge as promising contenders poised to overcome the limitations encountered with traditional carbon materials, which often exhibit insufficient activity in the PMS activation process. Nevertheless, the amalgamation of metal sites during the synthesis process presents a formidable challenge to the structural design of M-N-C. Herein, employing ZIF-8 as the precursor of carbonaceous support, metal ions can readily penetrate the cage structure of the substrate, and the N-rich linkers serve as effective ligands for anchoring metal cations, thereby overcoming the awkward limitation. The research results of this study indicate BPA in water matrix can be effectively removed in the M-N-C/PMS system, in which the obtained nitrogen-rich ZIF-8-derived Cu-N-C presented excellent activity and stability on the PMS activation, as well as the outstanding resistance towards the variation of environmental factors. Abstract:In this work, a g-C3N4 supported NiCx nanoclusters catalyst (NiCx-CN) was developed, and its performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was evaluated. Mechanism investigation stated that although singlet oxygen (1O2) was formed in the catalytic process, its contribution to BPA elimination was weeny. Interestingly, through the experiment with dimethyl sulfoxide as the probe, it was considered that the high-valent nickel-oxo species (Ni&+=O), generated after the interaction of NiCx-CN and PMS, was the dominating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Theoretical calculations (DFT) implied that NiCx-CN might lose electrons to generate high-valent Ni, which was consistent with the detection of Ni3+ on the surface of the used NiCx-CN. Besides, the prepared NiCx-CN showed advantages in resisting the interference of inorganic anions. Meanwhile, three BPA degradation routes had been proposed based on the transformation intermediates. This study will establish a new protocol for PMS activation using heterogeneous Ni-based catalysts to efficiently degrade organic pollutants via a nonradical mechanism.

Abstract:Currently, many catalysts are inconvenient to separate from water, and the solvents used in the preparation process are not environmentally friendly, resulting in low recovery efficiency and secondary pollution. In this study, the magnetic and porous regenerated cellulose/carbon nanotubes/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (RC/CNTs/Fe3O4 NPs) composites were synthesized for activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) in a green alkaline-urea system. The RC/CNTs/Fe3O4 NPs-PDS system achieved 100% removal of bisphenol A compared with CNTs (~64.6%), RC (~0%) or Fe3O4 NPs (~0%), which was closely related to the introduction of defects and functional groups, nitrogen doping and conductive networks. Interestingly, the strong interaction between CNTs and the sheath-like protective layer formed by urea on the cellulose surface promotes the introduction of nitrogen into the composites at the preparation temperature of 70 °C. Moreover, the mechanism of the system was found to be a typical non-radical pathway. Fortunately, there is no leaching of iron ions in the system, and the effects of the actual waterbody, initial pH, and different anions are negligible. The recycling and separation experiments revealed the practicality and superiority of the composite. This work provides a feasible and sustainable strategy for the application of natural cellulose-supported catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-free catalysts are widely recognized as a promising approach toward wastewater remediation because of the absence of metal leaching. However, the oxidation products involved in the oxidation process and the corresponding mechanisms are still controversial. In this work, N-doping carbocatalysts(CN) were fabricated via as-prepared g-C3N4 and glucose solution, and the activity of the as-prepared catalysts was optimized by controlling calcination temperature. Correspondingly, the increasing calcination temperature promotes the catalytic oxidation of BPA. The positive correlations between the contents of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N and the kobs values of BPA oxidation, as well as XPS analysis indicate the important roles of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N in BPA oxidation. According to the series characterization of the oxidation products and Raman analysis of the reaction process, the moderately activated persulfate (PS) on CN catalyst is the predominant species in BPA oxidation and BPA can be oxidized to BPA polymers with high selectivity by H-abstraction under alkaline conditions. This work highlights the important role of the moderate activation of PS in polymerization of phenolic contaminants under alkaline conditions, which enriches our understanding on oxidation of aromatic contaminants by PS under alkaline conditions.

Abstract:A novel FeOX nanoparticles supported biomass activated carbon (BAC/FeOX) composite was prepared through one-pot calcination method with FeCl3 and cherry stone powder as precursors. The carbonization of biomass, reduction of Fe3+, and FeOX anchored on carbon substrate could be achieved at the same time. Characterization with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope indicated that nanoscale FeOX distributed uniformly on carbon substrate, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high resolution TEM characterization proved that the loaded FeOX was high crystallinity of Fe3O4 and α-Fe0. Bisphenol A (BPA) was used to investigate the degradation performance of BAC/FeOX activating peroxydisulfate (PDS). The ratio of raw materials affected degradation efficiency of BPA intensively through the content, valence state, and dispersibility of FeOX nanoparticles, and the optimal material could degrade 20 mg/L BPA completely in 5 min at 0.1 g/L in the presence of 1 g/L PDS. Free radical determination and quenching experiments indicated that both SO4•− and •OH were involved in BPA degradation. The degradation pathway was proposed based on the identification of degradation intermediates. The facile synthesis method, high activation efficiency, and low-cost and environmental friendly raw materials made the BAC/FeOX-50 an alternative catalyst for organic pollution water treatment.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is a typical kind of endocrine disruption chemical, which has a negative effect on human health, and thus it is necessary to remove BPA from water. Herein, activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by Fe, Cu-Coordinated ZIF-Derived Carbon Framework bifunctional catalyst (Fe/Cu@NC-x) fabricated via hydrothermal-calcination method for BPA removal. The physicochemical properties of Fe/Cu@NC-x were studied by X-ray diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett Teller, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effects of the Fe/Cu@NC-900 dosage and PMS concentration, initial pH, and co-existing anions on BPA degradation were evaluated. Under optimized factors (pH unadjusted, Fe/Cu@NC-900 = 0.2 g/L, and PMS = 0.75 g/L), the degradation efficiency of BPA can reach 98% after 30 min. In addition, the BPA degradation efficiency was different extents restrain by inorganic anions (SO42- > Cl- > HCO3- > NO3-). Furthermore, the free radicals (SO4-·, ·OH, and O2-·) and non-radical (1O2) contribute to rapid BPA degradation in Fe/Cu@NC-900/PMS system. This study presents a novel material with significant performance for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Oxygen atoms with lone pair electrons have been used to improve the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, a one-step annealing strategy without co precursor is used to prepare O-doped graphitic carbon nitride (OCN) for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The band structure and photocatalytic performance are tuned by simply controlling the heating time. The degradation rate constant for OCN6 is improved by 29 times compared to the original CN. Experimental and the density functional theory calculated results prove that the doped-O is the key factor in promoting photocatalytic performance. The introduced O not only adjusts local electron density, but also decreases the band gap to boost e - transfer and carrier generation and separation. The elevated conductive band energy is responsible for producing O2∙-, which is the dominated reactive oxygen species. This work offers a simple and effective way for the self-modification of metal-free catalysts to resolve environmental issues.
