Abstract:The challenge to prepare conductive hydrogel electrode for stretchable supercapacitors with high areal capacitance and excellent stability during stretching attract tremendous attention from researchers. Herein, we report a method to enhance performance of conductive hydrogel electrode. The in‐situ oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer is performed in the prestretched polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel. After releasing the hydrogel, the polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles can shrink with the PAAm substrate to form a dense and continuous conductive network. Due to the enhanced conductive networks, the prestretched PAAm‐PANI conductive hydrogel with prestrain of 500% (PPCH5) electrode shows high areal capacitance of 509.9mF cm‐2 at 0.5 mA cm‐2. The symmetrical stretchable supercapacitor based on PPCH5 electrodes exhibits a high areal capacitance of 219.7 mF cm‐2. The device shows high capacitance retention of 68.5 % even when stretched to 200 % strain, and non‐capacitance decays after 2000 stretching cycles at 100% strain. This strategy can be expanded to the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) filled hydrogel systems. The PAAm‐PANI‐CNT conductive hydrogel with prestrain of 500% based supercapacitor performs the specific capacitances of 1429.87 mF cm‐2. The results demonstrate that the prestretching is a highly effective method to enhance capacitance and stretching stability of PANI hydrogel electrode for stretchable supercapacitors. Abstract:A dynamically stretchable solid state supercapacitor using graphene woven fabric (GWF) as electrode materials is designed and evaluated. The electrode is developed after GWF film is transferred onto a pre-stretched polymer substrate. Polyaniline is deposited covering the GWF film through in-situ electropolymerization to improve the electrochemical properties of the electrode. The supercapacitor is assembled in sandwich structure and packaged in polymer and its electrochemical performance is investigated under both static and dynamic stretching modes. The stretchable supercapacitors possess excellent static and dynamic stretchability. The dynamic strain can be up to 30% with excellent galvanic stability even under high strain rates (up to 60%/s).

Abstract:Multiple stretchability has never been demonstrated as supercapacitors because the hydrogel used cannot fully recover after being heavily deformed. Now, a highly reversibly stretchable all-polymer supercapacitor was fabricated using a developed double network hydrogel (DN hydrogel) as electrolyte and pure polypyrrole (PPy) as electrode. The DN hydrogel provides excellent mechanical properties, which can be stretched up to 500 % many times and then restore almost 100 % of the original length. To fabricate the fully recoverable stretchable supercapacitor, we annealed a free-standing pure conducting polymer film as electrode so that the electrodes induced retardance is minimized. The as-fabricated DN hydrogel/pure conducting polymer supercapacitors can be perfectly recovered from 100 % strain with almost no residual deformation left and the electrochemical performance can be maintained even after 1000 stretches (but not bending).

Abstract:Flexible electronics are currently highly favored because of their promising applications in flexible displays, artificial electronic skin, wearable devices, etc. Exploiting flexible energy storage systems, which are supercapacitors, that have a decent electrochemical performance as well as flexibility and stretchability is essential to promote the development of flexible electronic products. In this work, a flexible and stretchable polyaniline (PANI) supercapacitor based on a conductive stainless steel mesh was developed via a simple electrodeposition route with an elastic gel polyvinyl alcohol polymer (PVA)/phosphoric acid (H3PO4) electrolyte, which exhibits a considerable rate capability and mechanical properties. The as‐prepared capacitor delivers a specific capacitance of 282 F g−1 under a specific current of 2.5 A g−1. Meanwhile, the polyaniline capacitor exhibits perfect pseudocapacitance behavior at low scan rates (up to 50 mV s−1) and great capacitive characteristics at high scan rates up to 5000 mV s−1. More impressively, this supercapacitor displays excellent tolerance against mechanical deformation, including bending, folding and stretching, even to 20% with a well‐maintained capacitance. This stretchable polyaniline supercapacitor with a high rate capability provides a facile and cost‐effective route for the design of flexible energy storage devices.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Nanostructured conductive polymer hydrogels (CPHs) have been extensively applied in energy storage owing to their advantageous features, such as excellent electrochemical activity and relatively high electrical conductivity, yet the fabrication of self‐standing and flexible electrode‐based CPHs is still hampered by their limited mechanical properties. Herein, macromolecularly interconnected 3D graphene/nanostructured CPH is synthesized via self‐assembly of CPHs and graphene oxide macrostructures. The 3D hybrid hydrogel shows uniform interconnectivity and enhanced mechanical properties due to the strong macromolecular interaction between the CPHs and graphene, thus greatly reducing aggregation in the fiber‐shaping process. A proof‐of‐concept all‐gel‐state fibrous supercapacitor based on the 3D polyaniline/graphene hydrogel is fabricated to demonstrate the outstanding flexibility and mouldability, as well as superior electrochemical properties enabled by this 3D hybrid hydrogel design. The proposed device can achieve a large strain (up to ≈40%), and deliver a remarkable volumetric energy density of 8.80 mWh cm−3 (at power density of 30.77 mW cm−3), outperforming many fiber‐shaped supercapacitors reported previously. The all‐hydrogel design opens up opportunities in the fabrication of next‐generation wearable and portable electronics.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are widely used in various fields due to their high power density, fast charging and discharging speeds, and long service life. However, with the increasing demand for flexible electronics, integrated supercapacitors in devices are also facing more challenges, such as extensibility, bending stability, and operability. Despite many reports on stretchable supercapacitors, challenges still exist in their preparation process, which involves multiple steps. Therefore, we prepared stretchable conducting polymer electrodes by depositing thiophene and 3-methylthiophene on patterned 304 stainless steel (SS 304) through electropolymerization. The cycling stability of the prepared stretchable electrodes could be further improved by protecting them with poly(vinyl alcohol)/sulfuric acid (PVA/H2SO4) gel electrolyte. Specifically, the mechanical stability of the polythiophene (PTh) electrode was improved by 2.5%, and the stability of the poly(3-methylthiophene (P3MeT) electrode was improved by 7.0%. As a result, the assembled flexible supercapacitors maintained 93% of their stability even after 10,000 cycles of strain at 100%, which indicates potential applications in flexible electronics.

Abstract:As power source for integrated wearable electronics, stretchable supercapacitors have gained significant attention. Here, an in-plane compression strategy is proposed to make highly stretchable current collectors from commercially available stainless steel mesh. Polyaniline is deposited on the compressed metal mesh to produce stretchable pseudo-capacitive electrode with 100% stretching deformation capability. An intrinsically stretchable supercapacitor is demonstrated using such electrodes and poly(vinyl alcohol)-H3PO4 polymer gel electrolyte. The assembled supercapacitor shows an areal capacitance of 13.5 mF cm(-2) at a current density of 0.1 mA cm(-2). It can maintain 89% of its initial capacitance after 1000 stretching/releasing cycles at a high strain of 100%. It can also endure a dynamic stretching rate of 7.5% s(-1) with a capacitance retention of 92.9%. This work proves the potential of fabricating stretchable devices with commodity materials. High-Performance Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Conductive Hydrogels for Stretchable Elastic All-Hydrogel Supercapacitors and Flexible Self-Powered Integrated Systems

Abstract:Conductive polymer hydrogels exhibit unique electrical, electrochemical, and mechanical properties, making them highly competitive electrode materials for stretchable high-capacity energy storage devices for cutting-edge wearable electronics. However, it remains extremely challenging to simultaneously achieve large mechanical stretchability, high electrical conductivity, and excellent electrochemical properties in conductive polymer hydrogels because introducing soft insulating networks for improving stretchability inevitably deteriorates the connectivity of rigid conductive domain and decreases the conductivity and electrochemical activity. This work proposes a distinct confinement self-assembly and multiple crosslinking strategy to develop a new type of organic-inorganic hybrid conductive hydrogels with biphase interpenetrating cross-linked networks. The hydrogels simultaneously exhibit high conductivity (2000 S m-1), large stretchability (200%), and high electrochemical activity, outperforming existing conductive hydrogels. The inherent mechanisms for the unparalleled comprehensive performances are thoroughly investigated. Elastic all-hydrogel supercapacitors are prepared based on the hydrogels, showing high specific capacitance (212.5 mF cm-2), excellent energy density (18.89 µWh cm-2), and large deformability. Moreover, flexible self-powered luminescent integrated systems are constructed based on the supercapacitors, which can spontaneously shine anytime and anywhere without extra power. This work provides new insights and feasible avenues for developing high-performance stretchable electrode materials and energy storage devices for wearable electronics.
A Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitor Based on Graphene/polyaniline Paper Electrodes

Abstract:The direct coating of graphene sheets obtained by electrochemical exfoliation on commercial paper ren- ders the preparation of highly conductive flexible paper substrate for subsequent deposition of polyani- line (PANi) nanorods via electrochemical polymerization. The deposition of PANi can be well-controlled by adjusting the electrochemical polymerization time, leading to the formation of PANi coated graphene paper (PANi-GP). The as-prepared electrode exhibited high areal capacitance of 176 mF cm ? 2 in three- electrode system at a current density of 0.2 mA cm ? 2 , which is around 10 times larger than that of pris- tine graphene paper due to the pseudocapacitive behavior of PANi. In-situ Raman test was used to de- termine the molecular changes during redox process of PANi. More importantly, all-solid-state symmetric capacitor assembled with two PANi-GP electrodes in a polymer electrolyte delivered an areal capacitance of 123 mF cm ? 2 , corresponding to an areal energy density of 17.1 μWh cm ? 2 and an areal power density of 0.25 mW cm ? 2 . The symmetric capacitor held a capacitive retention of 74.8％ after 500 bending tests from 0 to 120 °, suggesting the good flexibility and mechanical stability. These results showed the great promising application in flexible energy-storage devices.
High-Performance Flexible Solid-State Carbon Cloth Supercapacitors Based on Highly Processible N-Graphene Doped Polyacrylic Acid/Polyaniline Composites

Abstract:Improving the solubility of conductive polymers to facilitate processing usually decreases their conductivity and they suffer from poor cycling stability due to swelling-shrinking during charging cycles. We circumvent these problems with a novel preparation method for nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) enhanced polyacrylic acid/polyaniline (NG-PAA/PANI) composites, ensuring excellent processibility for scalable production. The content of PANI is maximized under the constraint of still allowing defect-free coatings on filaments of carbon cloth (CC). The NG content is then adjusted to optimize specific capacitance. The optimal CC electrodes have 32 wt.% PANI and 1.3 wt.% NG, thus achieving a high capacitance of 521 F/g at 0.5 F/g. A symmetric supercapacitor made from 20 wt.% PANI CC electrodes has more than four times the capacitance (68 F/g at 1 A/g) of previously reported flexible capacitors based on PANI-carbon nanotube composites and it retains the full capacitance under large bending angles. The capacitor exhibits high energy and power densities (5.8 Wh/kg at 1.1 kW/kg), a superior rate capability (still 81% of the 1 A/g capacitance at 10 A/g) and long-term electrochemical stability (83.2% retention after 2000 cycles).
Supercapacitors Based on Flexible Graphene/polyaniline Nanofiber Composite Films.

Abstract:Composite films of chemically converted graphene (CCG) and polyaniline nanofibers (PANI-NFs) were prepared by vacuum filtration the mixed dispersions of both components. The composite film has a layered structure, and PANI-NFs are sandwiched between CCG layers. Furthermore, it is mechanically stable and has a high flexibility; thus, it can be bent into large angles or be shaped into various desired structures. The conductivity of the composite film containing 44% CCG (5.5 x 10(2) S m(-1)) is about 10 times that of a PANI-NF film. Supercapacitor devices based on this conductive flexible composite film showed large electrochemical capacitance (210 F g(-1)) at a discharge rate of 0.3 A g(-1). They also exhibited greatly improved electrochemical stability and rate performances.
Mechanically stable all-hydrogel supercapacitor achieved by electrodes with excellent flexibility and high capacitance performance

Abstract:An all-in-one flexible and all-solid-state matrix conductive hydrogel electrode with high capacitance has been effectively generated in this work. Using multi-dimensional materials collaborative construction, one-dimensional (1D) polypyrrole (PPy) nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanolayers are incorporated into a three-dimensional (3D) polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The cross network of PVA effectively prevents PPy aggregation and inhibits the collapse of the PPy skeleton, while is uniformly distributed and immobilized the RGO layer within the three-dimensional matrix of physically cross-linked PVA. This further enhances the overall material's mechanical properties and the conductivity. The confined growth PPy provides certain capacitive properties to the material. The hydrogen bonding and synergistic effect between each component make the PVA/RGO/PPy-0.5 hydrogel electrode to have an excellent area specific capacitance of 483.3 mF/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 , along with outstanding flexibility and 91.2 % high cycle stability after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. By employing a layer-gelation strategy, an all-in-one flexible and all-solid-state supercapacitor set has a high energy density of 44.6 μWh/cm 2 and high cycling stability of 94.8 % after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, there is no significant capacitance loss when supercapacitor bent at various angles, demonstrating the great potential of the feasible flexible supercapacitors with high capacitance and deformability made possible through multi-dimensional materials collaborative construction.

Abstract:Graphene fiber-based supercapacitors have attracted tremendous interest and possess the greatest potential for flexible/wearable energy storage devices. However, their specific capacitance and energy density are not sufficient and impede their widespread practical application. Here, polyaniline/graphene hybrid fibers (PANI/GF) were fabricated by a simple in situ chemical polymerization of polyaniline on graphene fibers synthesized by the wet-spinning method and a chemical reduction process. The crumpled morphology of the graphene fibers and polymerization process in a dilute solution of aniline monomer improve the structural uniformity and stability of the composite fibers. The hybrid fibers based flexible supercapacitor with solid-state electrolyte not only deliver high specific capacitance of 87.8 m F cm−2 and high energy density of 12.2 μW h cm−2 at a current density of 0.22 mA cm−2, but also exhibits long cycling stability after 10,000 cycles. This is mainly ascribed to the uniform dispersion of polyaniline on the graphene fibers and the stable structure of the hybrid fibers. The as-synthesized graphene hybrid fibers are a promising candidate for flexible/wearable supercapacitors.

Abstract:PAM‐DVB‐Li hydrogel electrolyte was synthesized by radiation method, which exhibited ultrastretchable and high ionic conductivity. An all‐in‐one supercapacitor was prepared on PAM‐DVB‐Li, demonstrating high capacitance, cyclic stability, safety, and ultra‐tensile resistance. Stretchability is a crucial property of flexible all‐in‐one supercapacitors. This work reports a novel hydrogel electrolyte, polyacrylamide‐divinylbenzene‐Li2SO4 (PAM‐DVB‐Li) synthesized by using a strategy of combining hydrophobic nodes and hydrophilic networks as well as a method of dispersing hydrophobic DVB crosslinker to acrylamide monomer/Li2SO4 aqueous solution by micelles and followed γ‐radiation induced polymerization and crosslinking. The resultant PAM‐DVB‐Li hydrogel electrolyte possesses excellent mechanical properties with 5627 ± 241% stretchability and high ionic conductivity of 53 ± 3 mS cm−1. By in situ polymerization of conducting polyaniline (PANI) on the PAM‐DVB‐Li hydrogel electrolyte, a novel all‐in‐one supercapacitor, PAM‐DVB‐Li/PANI, with highly integrated structure is prepared further. Benefiting from the excellent properties of hydrogel electrolyte and the all‐in‐one structure, the device exhibits a high specific capacitance of 469 mF cm−2 at 0.5 mA cm−2, good cyclic stability, safety, and deformation damage resistance. More importantly, the device demonstrates a superior tensile resistance (working normally under no more than 300% strain, capacitance stability in 1000 cycles of 1000% stretching and 10 cycles of 3000% stretching) far beyond that of other all‐in‐one supercapacitors. This work proposes a novel strategy to construct tensile‐resistant all‐in‐one flexible supercapacitors that can be used as an energy storage device for stretchable electronic devices.

Abstract:We report the design and preparation of graphene and polyaniline (PANI) woven-fabric composite films by in situ electropolymerization. The introduction of PANI greatly improves the electrochemical properties of solid-state supercapacitors which possess capacitances as high as 23 mF cm(-2), and exhibit excellent cycling stability with similar to 100% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles. The devices have displayed superior flexibility with improved areal specific capacitances to 118% during deformation.
Facile Preparation of High‐Performance Stretchable Fiber‐Like Electrodes and Supercapacitors

Abstract:A facile preparation method was proposed to fabricate core-sheath structured elastic cord/carbon nanotube (CNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite fibers with excellent electrochemical performance and good mechanical stretchability. Specifically, we developed a "surface melting for stable attachment" strategy to combine CNT/PANI composite film tightly with elastic cord fiber. The fabricated fiber-like elastic cord/CNT/PANI composite electrode displays a large gravimetric capacitance of 394 F g(-1)(corresponds to a linear specific capacitance of 15.4 mF cm(-1)) and superior rate capability. The electrode capacitance has no obvious decrease when the electrode was stretched from original state to a large stretch ratio of 100%, and the capacitance maintains 98% after 100 stretch-release cycles; besides, the electrode at stretching state possesses almost same cycling stability and rate capability as it at original state. These results indicate robust micro-structure and outstanding stretchability of our fiber-like elastic cord/CNT/PANI composite electrode. Consequently, all-solid-state supercapacitors assembled based on the fiber-like electrode also exhibit impressive stretchability. Overall, the proposed facile method for producing stretchable fiber-like electrodes/supercapacitors is believed to further boost the practical application of stretchable and wearable energy storage devices.
Fabrication of PANI@Ti3C2Tx/PVA hydrogel composite as flexible supercapacitor electrode with good electrochemical performance

Abstract:Developing a new strategy to effectively prevent the restacking of MXene nanosheets will have significant impacts on designing flexible supercapacitor electrodes. Herein, a novel Ti3C2Tx/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) porous sponge with 3D interconnected structures is prepared by sol-gel and freeze-dried methods. This Ti3C2Tx/PVA porous sponge is used as the template of in-situ polyaniline (PANI) polymerization, and the fabricated PANI@Ti3C2Tx/PVA hydrogel composite is applied as flexible supercapacitors electrodes. 1D conductive polymer chains PVA could increase the interlayer spacing of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, which is beneficial to expose more electrochemical active sites. The supercapacitor based on PANI@Ti3C2Tx/PVA hydrogel composite exhibits the coexistence of double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance behavior. This supercapacitor shows a maximum areal specific capacitance of 103.8 mF cm(-2) at 2 A m(-2), and it also exhibits a maximum energy density of 9.2 mu Wh.cm(-2) and an optimum power density of 800 mu W cm(-2). The capacitance of this supercapacitor is almost not change under different bending angles. Moreover, 99% capacitance retention is achieved after 10 000 charge/ discharge cycles of the supercapacitor. The synergistic effect between PANI and Ti3C2Tx/PVA composite may improve the number of reactive sites and provide efficient channels for ion diffusion/electron transport.

Abstract:Stretchable energy storage devices, maintaining the capability of steady operation under large mechanical strain, have become increasing more important with the development of stretchable electronic devices. Stretchable supercapacitors (SSCs), with high power density, modest energy density, and superior mechanical properties are regarded as one of the most promising power supplies to stretchable electronic devices. Conductive polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene (PTh) and poly(3,4-ehtylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), are among the well-studied electroactive materials for the construction of SSCs because of their high specific theoretical capacity, excellent electrochemical activity, light weight, and high flexibility. Much effort has been devoted to developing stretchable, conductive polymer-based SSCs with different device structures, such as sandwich-type and fiber-shaped type SSCs. This review summarizes the material and structural design for conductive polymer-based SSCs and discusses the challenge and important directions in this emerging field.
