Abstract:Purpose: Cherenkov radiation carries the potential of direct in-water dose measurements, but its precision is currently limited by a strong anisotropy. Taking advantage of polarization imaging, this work proposes a new approach for high accuracy Cherenkov dose measurements. Methods: Cherenkov produced in a 15x15x20 cm^3 water tank is imaged with a cooled CCD camera from four polarizer transmission axes [0{\deg}, 45{\deg}, 90{\deg}, 135{\deg}]. The water tank is positioned at the isocenter of a 5x5 cm^2, 6 MV photon beam. Using Malus' law, the polarized portion of the signal is extracted. Corrections are applied to the polarized signal following azimuthal and polar Cherenkov angular distributions extracted from Monte Carlo simulations. Percent depth dose and beam profiles are measured and compared with the prediction from a treatment planning system (TPS). Results: Corrected polarized signals on the central axis reduced deviations at depth from 20% to 0.8\pm1%. For the profile measurement, differences between the corrected polarized signal and the TPS calculations are 1\pm3% and 8\pm3% on the central axis and penumbra regions respectively. 29\pm1% of the Cherenkov signal was found to be polarized. Conclusions: This work proposes a novel polarization imaging approach enabling high precision water-based Cherenkov dose measurements. The method allows correction of the Cherenkov anisotropy within 3% on the beam central axis and in depth.
Polarization-degree Imaging Contrast in Turbid Media: a Quantitative Study.

Abstract:Scattering in biological tissue can degrade imaging contrast and reduce the probe depth. Polarization-based measurement has shown its advantages in overcoming such drawbacks. Here, linear and circular polarization degree imaging is applied to a comblike metal target submerged in Intralipid solutions. Contrasts of the metal bars are measured quantitatively as functions of the Intralipid concentration and the submersion depths. Different behaviors in contrast for linear and circular polarizations are compared. Contributions to the background of circular polarization degree images by backscattering, snake, and diffusive photons are examined carefully.

Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.
Estimation and correction of produced light from prompt gamma photons on luminescence imaging of water for proton therapy dosimetry

Abstract:Although the luminescence images of water during proton-beam irradiation using a cooled charge-coupled device camera showed almost the same ranges of proton beams as those measured by an ionization chamber, the depth profiles showed lower Bragg peak intensities than those measured by an ionization chamber. In addition, a broad optical baseline signal was observed in depths that exceed the depth of the Bragg peak. We hypothesize that this broad baseline signal originates from the interaction of proton-induced prompt gamma photons with water. These prompt gamma photons interact with water to form high-energy Compton electrons, which may cause luminescence or Cherenkov emission from depths exceeding the location of the Bragg peak. To clarify this idea, we measured the luminescence images of water during the irradiations of protons in water with minimized parallax errors, and also simulated the produced light by the interactions of prompt gamma photons with water. We corrected the measured depth profiles of the luminescence images by subtracting the simulated distributions of the produced light by the interactions of prompt gamma photons in water. Corrections were also conducted using the estimated depth profiles of the light of the prompt gamma photons, as obtained from the off-beam areas of the luminescence images of water. With these corrections, we successfully obtained depth profiles that have almost identical distributions as the simulated dose distributions for protons. The percentage relative height of the Bragg peak with corrections to that of the simulation data increased to 94% from 80% without correction. Also, the percentage relative offset heights of the deeper part of the Bragg peak with corrections decreased to 0.2%-0.4% from 4% without correction. These results indicate that the luminescence imaging of water has potential for the dose distribution measurements for proton therapy dosimetry.

Polarization Gated Imaging in Turbid Media: a Study with Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:Polarized light has been increasingly used in biomedical imaging to study the optical properties of biological tissues or enhance the imaging contrast by eliminating the scattered light. In this report, we combine polarization gating and Fourier gating to suppress interference by the diffusive photons and improve the quality of projection images. A Monte Carlo simulation is utilized to study the propagation of different polarized light through turbid media. Polarization of a photon is represented by a Stokes vector and the scattering matrix is calculated from Mie theory. By tracing the trajectory and the polarization of the photons, spatial distribution and polarization of photons transmitted through a spatial filter aperture are simulated. It is shown that polarization gating and Fourier gating can effectively reject the multiple scattered photons and improve the contrasts of the images. Differences between linearly and circularly polarized lights for scatterers of different size are compared. However, for large particles, effects of both gating techniques are limited.

Abstract:It is difficult to cope with the changes in power and polarization for partially polarized light. The light polarization will also affect the image quality, especially for imaging with large numerical aperture. A novel method of analyzing the power and the polarization state of partially polarized light is proposed in this paper. This method has a good intuitiveness and requires much smaller computation. An aplanatic lens system is simulated. Polarization effect caused is analyzed with this method. The results show that for the imaging light the intensity of TM polarized light relatively increases because of large numerical aperture, which will influence image contrast. Imaging in high refractive index medium can be used to improve this problem.

Abstract:A feasibility study on the imaging of monochromatic carbon-ion beams for carbon-ion therapy was performed. The evaluation was based on Monte Carlo simulations and beam-irradiation experiments, using a pinhole x-ray camera, which measured secondary electron bremsstrahlung (SEB). The simulation results indicated that the trajectories of the carbon-ion beams with injection energies of 278, 249 and 218 MeV/u in a water phantom, were clearly imaged by measuring the SEB with energies from 30 to 60 keV, using a pinhole camera. The Bragg-peak positions for these three injection energies were located at the positions where the ratios of the counts of SEB acquisitions to the maximum counts were approximately 0.23, 0.26 and 0.29, respectively. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrated that it was possible to identify the Bragg-peak positons, at the positions where the ratios coincided with the simulation results. However, the estimated Bragg-peak positions for the injection energies of 278 and 249 MeV/u were slightly deeper than the expected positions. In conclusion, for both the simulations and experiments, we found that the 25 mm shifts in the Bragg-peak positions can be observed by this method.

Abstract:Among the various factors of polarization changes due to surface and internal structures of objects, the phenomenon of depolarization through light scattering is one of the most commonly occurring factors in visualization through polarization imaging. In the present study, depolarization due to surface light scattering over a broad wavelength range from the visible to IR regions was experimentally and theoretically elucidated. Using the polarization-probe-polarization-imaging system, we achieved successful visualization of depolarization based on surface structure differences at the nano-level while observing the instrument dial. The results of electromagnetic field analysis using the finite-difference time-domain method, incorporating surface structures observed through microscopic observation, revealed that Rayleigh scattering on the nano-scale uneven surface extends beyond depolarization.

Abstract:The editorial by Nicholl and Williatts (Anaesthesia 1998, 53, 1141–3) summarises again the Department of Health (DoH) document for the future of paediatric intensive care services in the United Kingdom [1]. As in the editorial in the British Medical Journal [2], the authors review the current proposals. No mention is made as to whether the proposed target of July 1998, after which children should no longer be looked after in the inappropriate location of general children’s wards, has been met. It is difficult to grasp, with the limited quality of the evidence for centralisation, how the DoH reached its conclusions. These studies have all used outcome as the criteria for good performance and quality of care. This is surely inappropriate in a speciality that has a less than 5% mortality. The studies have also used different scoring systems. The paediatric risk of mortality (PRISM) system was developed in the USA and scores the worst variable at 24 h whilst the paediatric index of mortality (PIM) is an Australian system that scores variables on admission. There is currently no consensus on which is the gold standard and neither has been fully validated in the British paediatric population. These issues, coupled with the fact that family and community opinions do not seem to have been taken into account, and the feeling that the Framework document is skewed towards infant and neonatal care [3], suggest that wastage of scarce resources is again taking place. What was needed, before recommendations, was good quality, properly funded long-term outcome data and research into the appropriate assessment of quality of paediatric intensive care. Once again, the gate has been shut long after the horse has bolted.
A Study on Penetration Depth of Polarization Imaging

Abstract:Optical clearing improves the penetration depth of optical measurements in turbid tissues. Polarization imaging has been demonstrated as a potentially promising tool for detecting cancers in superficial tissues, but its limited depth of detection is a major obstacle to the effective application in clinical diagnosis. In the present paper, detection depths of two polarization imaging methods, i.e., rotating linear polarization imaging (RLPI) and degree of polarization imaging (DOPI), are examined quantitatively using both experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the contrast curves of RLPI and DOPI are different. The characteristic depth of DOPI scales with transport mean free path length, and that of RLPI increases slightly with g. Both characteristic depths of RLPI and DOPI are on the order of transport mean free path length and the former is almost twice as large as the latter. It is expected that they should have different response to optical clearing process in tissues.
Circular Polarized Incident Light Scattering Properties at Optical Clearing in Tissues

Abstract:This paper focuses on polarization imaging during optical clearing process in tissues due to refractive index matching of tissue structural components. We start with some single-dispersed tissue models, composed of large spheres, small spheres, and large cylinders, respectively. Along with the simulated refractive index matching inside and outside the scatterers, the linear polarized incident photons show similar decreased depolarization. It is worth noting that the circular polarized incident light show different polarization change for different scatterers, sensitive to scatterer size and shape. For small Rayleigh-like spherical scatterers, the circular depolarization also decreases with index matching. However, the depolarization by the larger scatterers can be enhanced, supported by the photon distribution change with the index matching in the backward detection. After some extreme points, the depolarization of circular polarized photons will be suppressed until almost disappear. Furthermore, by the simulation of hybrid-dispersed models, we can find out that the transmission of circular polarized photons during optical clearing, is more sensitive to the content of smaller scatterers in the turbid medium, and also has a close relationship with the proportion of the anisotropic scatterers. We also extract a character to describe the difference of linear and circular polarized photons. The value and the change of this character can help us to explain the main scatterers contributed to the polarization features of tissue-like medium during optical clearing. The above results indicate different polarization features for different scattering systems by optical clearing, which are potentially useful for studying optical clearing by polarization methods.
Contrasts of the polarization difference projection images with linearly and circularly polarized lights

Abstract:Polarization gating has been an attractive technique for optical imaging in turbid media. In this study, we investigate the polarization difference projection image (PDPI) in turbid media with linearly and circularly polarized lights. An iris is placed at the focal spot of the imaging optics to examine the influence of spatial filtering on imaging contrast. Polystyrene microsphere suspensions in Rayleigh and Mie domains are used as the phantoms. Scattering coefficient g, and anisotropy factor g are varied independently to obtain the quantitative relation between the PDPI contrasts and the optical properties of the phantom. We also compare the PDPI contrast with the contrast of degree of polarization (DOP). Primary results show that the PDPI contrast is better than DOP image contrast either in Rayleigh or Mic scattering domain. In the Mie scattering domain, linear and circular PDPI contrasts are compared for different scattering coefficients. We also discussed how Fourier spatial gating improves the image contrast. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:We have studied charged nuclear fragments produced by 200 - 400 MeV/nucleon carbon ions, interacting with water and polycarbonate, using a newly developed emulsion detector. Total and partial charge-changing cross sections for the production of B, Be, and Li fragments were measured and compared with both previously published measurements, and model predictions. This study is of importance for validating and improving carbon ion therapy treatment planning systems, and for estimating the radiological risks for personnel on space missions, since carbon is a significant component of the Galactic Cosmic Rays.
Neutron irradiation and polarization effect of 4H-SiC Schottky detector

Abstract:Neutron irradiation experiments were carried out on a 4H-SiC Schottky detector. The effects of neutron and accompanying γ-rays irradiation on the electrical properties, charge collection efficiency (CCE), energy resolution and crystal defects of 4H-SiC detectors were investigated. The total irradiation fluence was 1.24×10 14 n/cm 2 , with an equivalent 1 MeV neutron fluence of 1.33×10 15 n/cm 2 . Following neutron irradiation, the turn-on voltage increased significantly, and the capacitance of the Schottky junction no longer varied with the reverse bias voltage. The CCE of the detector decreased from 100% to 90.8%, while the energy resolution increased from 0.79% to 1.49%. The irradiated detector required a higher bias voltage for optimal performance. Additionally, we observed two defect levels, E c -0.5 eV and E c -0.35 eV, in the 4H-SiC crystals after irradiation. Their generation is also related to gamma ray irradiation. The detector exhibited a polarization effect, where the energy spectrum split into two distinct components during prolonged measurement of monoenergetic α particles. The peak position gradually shifted towards the lower energy side with increasing testing time. These effects can be mitigated by increasing the bias voltage to enhance the electric field strength in the drift region.

Study on the influence of optical clearing on polarization imaging contrast

Abstract:During optical clearing process, different microstructural features may show different polarization change. We simulated the tissue clearing process focusing on two type tissue anisotropy: the interstitial birefringence and the fibrous scatterers. Based on our previous research, in our simulations, we set up a sphere-cylinder birefringence model (SCBM) to mimic the anisotropic tissues, and employ the multiple clearing mechanisms mainly by refractive index matching, and supplemented by the alignment of the fibrous structures and the birefringence of the interstitial medium. It can be seen that the change regularity of depolarization and phase retardance along with the clearing is connected with the tissue modeling parameters, implying in what case the polarization contrast can be improved by clearing should be discussed. By comparing experiments and simulations, we examine how the polarization contrast changes with the clearing and what characters can be suitable for the polarization imaging applied in tissue clearing. © 2017 OSA.

Characterization of spectral and intensity changes with measurement geometry in various light guides used in scintillation dosimetry

Abstract:PURPOSE: To characterize response changes of various light guides used in megavoltage (MV) photon beam scintillation dosimetry as a function of irradiation conditions. Particular emphasis was placed on quantifying the impact of response changes on the Čerenkov light ratio (CLR).METHODS: Intensity and spectral response measurements as a function of dose, depth, and fiber-beam angle were performed with a commercial scintillation detector stripped of its scintillation material and five different custom-made light guides. The core materials of the light guides investigated consisted of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), low- and high-hydroxyl content silica, and polystyrene. Dose levels ranging from 50 monitor units (MU) to 1000 MU, depths ranging from 1 to 20 cm, and fiber-beam angles ranging from 10° to 90° were investigated. All measurements were performed at a photon beam energy of 6 MV. The CLR was calculated by taking the ratio of the responses in the blue to green spectral regions.RESULTS: There was no significant change in the CLR measured with the modified commercial scintillation detector as a function of delivered dose. In addition, increases in the CLR as functions of depth and fiber-beam angle were observed where the maximum changes were 4.2% and 3.6%, respectively. The spectrum measurements showed no observable changes in spectral shape with depth except for the low-hydroxyl content silica fiber. Variations in the measured spectral shape with fiber-beam angle were observed for all fibers investigated. The magnitude of the changes in the spectral shape varied with fiber type, where the silica fibers exhibited the largest changes and the plastic fibers exhibited the smallest changes. Increases in the CLR were observed for the silica fibers with depth and for all fibers with fiber-beam angle. The plastic fibers showed no significant change in the CLR as a function of depth. Increases of 3.1% and 9.5% in the CLR were observed for the high- and low-hydroxyl content silica fibers, respectively, over the range of depths investigated. Variations of 2.3%, 6.1%, 5.1% and 11.9% were observed for the PMMA, polystyrene, high-hydroxyl, and low-hydroxyl content silica fiber CLR values as a function of fiber-beam angle, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The insignificant change in the CLR with delivered dose indicates that a single CLR value over the investigated dose range is sufficient for accurate Čerenkov subtraction. Variations in the stem-effect spectrum shape can occur with changes in irradiation geometry. The magnitude of the changes are governed by the fiber construction and the optical properties of the fiber. The observed spectral shape changes can be explained by a combination of variations in optical path length through the fiber and the fiber fluorescent signal contribution to the stem-effect. These spectral shape variations directly influence the calculated CLR values. This work confirms that careful characterization of scintillation detectors is important as changes in the stem-effect spectrum can cause changes in the CLR. If the CLR changes between the reference and measurement conditions, this could result in an incorrect stem-effect subtraction and reduced measurement accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to simulate the signal of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (for short, PS-OCT) by the use of the sphere cylinder birefringence Monte Carlo program developed by our laboratory. Using the program, we can simulate various turbid media based on different optical models and analyze the scattering and polarization information of the simulated media. The detecting area and angle range and the scattering times of the photons are three main conditions we can use to screen out the photons which contribute to the signal of PS-OCT, and in this paper, we study the effects of these three factors on simulation results using our program, and find that the scattering times of the photon is the main factor to affect the signal, and the detecting area and angle range are less important but necessary conditions. In order to test and verify the feasibility of our simulation, we use two methods as a reference. One is called Extended Huygens Fresnel (for short, EHF) method, which is based on electromagnetism theory and can describe the single scattering and multiple scattering of light. By comparison of the results obtained from EHF method and ours, we explore the screening regularities of the photons in the simulation. Meanwhile, we also compare our simulation with another polarization related simulation presented by a Russian group, and our experimental results. Both the comparisons find that our simulation is efficient for PS-OCT at the superficial depth range, and should be further corrected in order to simulate the signal of PS-OCT at deeper depth.

Abstract:In one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of a plasma irradiated by linearly polarized lasers from both sides of boundaries, it is found that there is an appreciable growth of the electromagnetic field in cavitons in the transverse direction perpendicular to the direction of polarization, which indicates the polarization conversion of the electromagnetic field in cavitons. This paper demonstrates the mechanism of this phenomenon based on parametric resonance induced by ponderomotive force with twice the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation in the caviton. We develop a theoretical model and verify it with simulation results. This phenomenon contributes to the heating and acceleration of particles and traps more EM energy in cavitons.
