Abstract:In this study, the microscopic pore characteristics of shale in marine strata are evaluated. Based on field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-temperature N 2 adsorption (LT-N 2 GA), low-pressure CO 2 adsorption (LP-CO 2 GA) and high-pressure methane adsorption (HPMA) experiments, the pore characteristics of 12 shales from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations in northern Yunnan and Guizhou are characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. Fractal Frenkel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) theory is used to analyse the fractal characteristics, and the adsorption pore characteristics of shale are discussed. The correlation between the fractal dimension and pore structure and adsorption performance is determined. The results show that the total organic carbon (TOC) contents of the 12 shales are in the middle–low level, ranging from 0.43% to 5.42%, and the shales are generally in the highly mature to overmaturity stage (vitrinite reflectance ( R o ) values between 1.80% and 2.51%). The mineral composition is mainly quartz and clay minerals. The average clay mineral content is 40.98% (ranging from 24.7% to 63.3%), and the average quartz content is 29.03% (ranging from 16.8% to 39.6%), which are consistent with those of marine shale in the Sichuan Basin. FE-SEM and LT-N 2 GA isotherms reveal a complex shale pore structure and open pore style, mainly ink bottle-shaped and parallel plate-like pores. The total pore volumes (PVs) range from 0.012–0.052 cm 3 /g, and the specific surface area (SSA) values range from 18.112–38.466 m 2 /g. All shale samples have abundant micropores and mesopores, accounting for >90% of the total SSA. The fractal dimensions, D1 and D2, were obtained from N 2 adsorption data, with different adsorption characteristics at 0–0.5 and 0.5–1.0 relative pressures. The fractal dimensions increase with increasing BJH PV and BET SSA and decrease with decreasing average pore diameter (APD). The fractal dimensions are positively correlated with the TOC and clay mineral contents and negatively correlated with the quartz content. The fractal dimension can be used to evaluate the methane adsorption capacity; the larger the fractal dimension is, the larger the methane adsorption capacity is. Fractal analysis is helpful to better understand the pore structure and adsorption capacity of shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Nanopores in organic shale reservoirs are of great significance for shale gas accumulation and carbon dioxide geological sequestration. To explore the multifractality and classification of nanopores in the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation shales, nine shale samples were selected from the well TX1 in North Guizhou, South China. Then, we conducted TOC analysis, XRD analysis and SEM to investigate shale material composition and nanopore morphology and low temperature N2 and CO2 adsorption experiments were used to quantitatively characterize the nanopore structure. The multifractal theory was applied to study the spatial distribution of nanopores. Results showed that nanopores in Niutitang Formation shales are mainly organic pores with pore sizes less than 50 nm, followed by intraparticle dissolution pores; interparticle pores are rarely observed. According to the results of the N2 adsorption experiments, our samples can be divided into three types. Type I samples have the highest average pore size, whereas Type III samples have the highest pore volume and surface area. Results of the CO2 adsorption experiments indicated a trimodal distribution of measured pores. Our study revealed the multifractality of nanopores, and the complexity of pores measured via N2 adsorption is stronger than that measured via CO2 adsorption. Results of multifractal analysis via N2 adsorption demonstrated that Type I samples have the strongest pore agglomeration and Type III samples have the most uniform pore size distribution. For nanopores measured via CO2 adsorption, subtle differences exist in multifractal characteristics of the various samples. An increase in the pore volume measured via N2 adsorption corresponds to a decrease in pore aggregation and heterogeneity and an increase in pore connectivity. For nanopores detected via CO2 adsorption, no obvious correlations were observed between the pore structure and multifractal parameters. We propose a new nanopore-classification scheme based on pore heterogeneity and connectivity. Nanopores of the selected samples can be classified as micropores (<10 nm), mesopores (10–25 nm), and macropores (>25 nm). Fractal properties of nanopores obtained from SEM images showed that mesopores have weaker heterogeneity and better connectivity than micropores and macropores, which also indicates the reasonability of our pore classification.

Abstract:The characteristics of the nanopore structure in shale play a crucial role in methane adsorption and in determining the occurrence and migration of shale gas. In this study, using an integrated approach of X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), we systematically focused on eight drilling samples of marine Taiyuan shale from well ZK1 in southern North China to study the characteristics and heterogeneity of their nanopore structure. The results indicated that different sedimentary environments may control the precipitation of clay and quartz between transitional shale and marine shale, leading to different organic matter (OM)–clay relationships and different correlations between total organic carbon (TOC) and mineral content. The shale with high TOC content tended to have more heterogeneous micropores, leading to a higher fractal dimension and a more complex nanopore structure. With the increase of TOC content and thermal evolution of OM, the heterogeneity of the pore structure became more significant. Quartz from marine shale possessed abundant macropores, resulting in a decrease of the Brunauere–Emmette–Teller (BET) surface area (SA) and an increase of the average pore size (APS), while clay minerals developed a large number of micropores which worked together with OM to influence the nanopore structure of shale, leading to the increase of the SA and the decrease of the APS. The spatial order of interlayer pores increased with the increase of mixed-layer illite–smectite (MLIS) content, which naturally reduced the fractal dimensions. In contrast, kaolinite, chlorite, and illite have a small number of nanopores, which might enhance the complexity and reduce the connectivity of the nanopore system by mean of pore-blocking. Taiyuan shale with higher heterogeneity is highly fractal, and its fractal dimensions are principally related to the micropores. The fractal dimensions correlate positively with the SA and total pore volume, suggesting that marine shale with higher heterogeneity may possess a larger SA and a higher total pore volume.

Abstract:Lower Cambrian Niututang Formation shale in south China is one of the main target zones for shale gas exploration.However, the exploration of shale in northeastern Chongqing is not satisfactory as the pore structure of the shale is unclear.This study examined pores in shale samples from the Niutitang Formation using focused ion-beam scanning electron microscopy, nano-CT, and gas adsorption analysis.Results show that pores in Niutitang shale are rare and have small diameters and poor connectivity.Most Niutitang-shale pores are inorganic pores, including intraparticle and intergranular pores.N2 adsorption hysteresis loop of Niutitang shale belongs to type H4 corresponding to narrow slit pore.The average total pore volume of the Niutitang shale is 0.0317mL/g, and the average total surface area is 34.57m2/g.Over-high thermal evolution degree resulting small number of organic pores and poor connectivity of micro-nano pores in Niutitang shale.Mesopores contributed most of the pore volume and micropores contributed more pore surface area than that of mesopores.

Abstract:To study the microscopic pore characteristics of marine–continental transitional shale, we studied the Daning–Jixian block of the Shanxi Formation using low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LP-CO2A) and low-temperature N2 adsorption (LT-N2A) methods in conjunction with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), geochemistry, and mineral composition analysis in order to obtain pore structure characteristic parameters. The fractal dimension of the pores was calculated using the Frankel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) model, and the study also discusses the factors that influence the pore structure. The study found that the marine–continental transitional phase shale of the Shanxi Formation has clay mineral contents ranging from 36.24% to 65.21%. The total organic carbon (TOC) contents range from 0.64% to 9.70%. Additionally, the organic matter maturity is high. The FE-SEM and gas adsorption experiments revealed that the transitional shale of the Shanxi Formation possesses a diverse range of pore types with relatively large pore sizes. The dominant pore types are organic and intragranular pores, with pore morphologies predominantly appearing as slit and parallel plate structures. According to the experimental data on gas adsorption, the total SSA values range from 11.126 to 47.220 m2/g. The total PV values range from 0.014 to 0.056 cm3/g. Micropores make up a greater proportion of the total SSA, whereas mesoporous pores make up a greater proportion of the total PV. The distribution of shale pore fractal dimensions D1 and D2 (D1 is 2.470 to 2.557; D2 is 2.531 to 2.755), obtained through LT-N2A data, is relatively concentrated. D1 and D2 have a positive correlation with the TOC content, clay mineral content, and BET-SSA, and D1 and D2 have a negative correlation with the quartz content. D2 is positively correlated with the Langmuir volume, showing that D2 can be used to evaluate the methane adsorption capacity.

Abstract:The Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation's lacustrine shales in the Songliao Basin are among China's most promising shale oil reservoirs. To elucidate their pore and fractal characteristics, a comprehensive set of analyses encompassing total organic carbon (TOC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and low-temperature N 2 adsorption (LTNA), Rock-Eval pyrolysis experiments and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) were conducted. Using the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill (FHH) method, fractal dimensions (D) were calculated, and their relationship with pore metrics and shale compositions were explored. Two distinct fractal dimensions, D 1 (0 < P/P 0 < 0.5) and D 2 (0.5 <p p 0 <1.0), were derived from LTNA isotherms via the FHH approach. D 1 values fluctuated between 2.5715 and 2.7551 (mean 2.6564), while D 2 spanned from 2.3247 to 2.4209 (mean 2.3653). Notably, D 1 consistently surpassed D 2 , signifying that smaller pores exhibit greater homogeneity compared to their larger counterparts. D 1 gradually increases with the increase of clay content. A direct correlation was observed between pore volume (PV), specific surface area (SSA), and D (both D 1 and D 2 ), whereas the association between average pore diameter (APD) and D was inverse. Both D 1 and D 2 escalated with diminishing TOC, 2D-NMR solid organic matter (OM), S 1 content and 2D-NMR light oil. Intriguingly, D 1 showed a stronger association with key pore and "sweet spot" parameters, highlighting its utility in assessing pore structural complexity and shale oil potential. This study illustrates how fractal theory enhances our understanding of pore structures and the shale oil enrichment process for the lacustrine shale.

Abstract:This study focuses on understanding the fractal characteristics and controlling factors of micropore structures within organic-rich shale of the Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation in the Yichang area of Hubei Province. Mineralogy, petrology, and organogeochemical characteristics were confirmed through comprehensive testing methods, including whole-rock X-ray diffraction and organic geochemical analyses. Additional experiments included low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, and high-pressure mercury injection. Fractal dimensions of micropores, mesopores, and macropores were calculated using the V-S, FHH, and MENGER sponge models, respectively. Results indicate that the Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation represents a typical deposit from an alkaline water body, resulting in high-calcareous shale. Fractal dimensions were as follows: micropores (D1) ranged from 2.1138 to 2.3475 (average 2.2342), mesopores (D2) ranged from 2.5327 to 2.7162 (average 2.6171), and macropores (D3) ranged from 2.7361 to 2.9316 (average 2.82905). Correlations were observed between total organic carbon (TOC) content and Ro with D1 and D2 (positive) and D3 (negative). Shale pore volume and specific surface area exhibited positive correlations with D1 and D2 but negative correlations with D3. High bio-deposited silica positively influenced micropore and mesopore development, while clay mineral compaction and dehydration transformations favored macropore development. Carbonate minerals primarily contributed to regular macropores, with complex correlations involving fractal dimensions D1, D2, and D3. The research results provide theoretical support for analyzing pore fractal characteristics of shallow old Marine shale reservoirs and the prediction and development plan of high-quality reservoirs of the Shuijingtuo Formation in the Yichang area.

Abstract:The pore structure of gas shale reservoirs strongly influences gas occurrence, migration, and enrichment, which has become an important fundamental issue for shale gas exploration and production. To investigate variations in the pore structure of organic-rich shale and provide some insights into gas storage and pore evolution, this study focused on three dominant types of shale lithofacies in the Wufeng (WF) and Longmaxi (LMX) Formations in the Jiangdong (JD) Block of the Fuling Shale Gas Field. To qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the nanoscale pore structure of organic shale in the WF and LMX Formations, experiments including total organic carbon (TOC) content, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and low-temperature gas (nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2)) adsorption were conducted. Based on the N2 adsorption experiment and fractal theory, the fractal dimensions (D) of micropores (<2 nm), mesopores (2–50 nm), and macropores (50–300 nm) were respectively calculated, and the relationships between pore structure parameters and mineral composition, TOC content, and fractal dimension of shale in different lithofacies were investigated. The results show that the organic pores, inorganic pores (intergranular pores and intragranular pores), and microfractures are all developed in the WF and LMX shales. The pore morphology is dominated by slit or parallel plate pores, in addition to a few inkbottle pores. The pore size distribution (PSD) is multipeaked, and the total pore volume (PV) is mainly provided by mesopores and macropores (contribution rate is approximately 80%), while the pore specific surface area (SSA) is mainly provided by micropores (approximately 70%). Due to the various contents of clay minerals, quartz, and TOC, shale samples with different lithofacies show different pore evolution characteristics, resulting in strong heterogeneity and complex pore structure. Pores in the WF and LMX shale formations have obvious scale-dependent fractal features and are characterized by their corresponding D values for micropores, mesopores, and macropores. The D values of micropores in argillaceous shale (CM) are the largest among the shales, suggesting rougher micropore surfaces in the argillaceous shale (CM). In contrast, the D values of mesopores in mixed shale (M) and siliceous shale (S) are comparable but are larger than those of argillaceous shale (CM), indicating the much more complex mesopore structure in mixed shale (M) and siliceous shale (S), which could be conducive for gas adsorption and accumulation. The D values of macropores in siliceous shale (S) shales are relatively large and can provide a considerable amount of PV and SSA for the storage of free and adsorbed gas.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Knowledge of CH4 and CO2 storage in pore systems of organic-rich shale can provide valuable perspectives on gas-bearing properties and CO2 sequestration in shale reservoirs. To finely characterize the angstrom-scale pores and investigate their role in CH4/CO2 storage behaviors, this study examines 14 Lower Cambrian Niutitang shale samples by using an array of experiments, including total organic carbon (TOC) content tests, optical observations, section analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LPGA-CO2), and isothermal adsorption experiments. FE-SEM images reveal the presence of three main types of pores in the studied samples: intraparticle organic pores, dissolved intrapores within quartz particles, and intercrystal pores of clay minerals. Furthermore, the pore size distribution (PSD) curves from LPGA-CO2 possess two prominent peaks, and the pore structure parameters show significant linear covariations with the TOC, clay, quartz, and dolomite contents. The pore structure information exhibits multifractal behavior, and the Q-type cluster analysis on generalized fractal dimension spectrum parameters reveals two distinct types of samples. Type I samples have a stronger degree of PSD heterogeneity, whereas type II samples have better pore connectivity. By virtue of the spherical pore and conceptual pore-filling models, we demonstrate that CO2 has a higher storage volume in the angstrom scale than CH4, whereas CH4 has a higher ratio of the filling volume to the maximum adsorbed capacity. The filling capacity of CO2 is 1.121–2.087 (an average of 1.473) times that of CH4. From the perspective of pore multifractality, higher pore heterogeneity results in stronger CH4 and CO2 storage capacities. The gas filling density in subnano-scale micropores changes with varying pore sizes, which differs from a constant value of the adsorbed gas density for mono-/multilayer adsorption in mesopores. Our findings can provide new geometrical constraints on gas storage behavior in shale reservoirs, which contributes to understanding the gas storage capacity and adsorbed-phase gas density.

Abstract:The Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation is one of the most important shale reservoirs in the Northern Guizhou. To study the characteristics of pore structures and the relationships between shale's physical properties and pore structures in the complex tectonic area, from the perspective of hydrocarbon generation and evolution, the mineral composition, pore structure characteristics of shale samples in northern Guizhou were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopic composition analysis, focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), vitrinite reflectivity and nitrogen adsorption experiments. Results indicate that the pore structures can be categorized into conical, ink bottle, spherical, elliptical, beaded, irregular, and plate-like intersecting microfractures. Shale samples are organic-rich with an average total organic carbon content of 4.39%. Organic matter is consumed within the shale matrix during the hydrocarbon generation and evolution, which increases the organic pore size and the proportion of organic pores. The high TOC content is conducive to developing organic pores. In addition, the average content of brittle minerals is greater than 70%. High content of brittle minerals during diagenesis is conducive to developing the residual pores at the edges of mineral particles and dissolved pores within mineral particles. Thus, the high content of brittle minerals and TOC content is favorable for the development of meso-macropores. The content of clay minerals within the shale samples ranges from 6.3% to 42.2%, with an average of 20.02%. Micropores and mesopores mainly occur in the clay minerals. Pores in clay minerals are easily compacted under tectonic stress. Meanwhile, high thermal evolution degree and the vitrinite reflectance Ro greater than 3.5 is not conducive to developing pores. Hence, high TOC content, high brittle minerals content, and thermal evolution degree ranging from 0.6% to 3% make the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation shale reservoirs favorable for shale gas exploration.

Abstract:Cost-effective pore characterization is essential for understanding gas storage and flow in shale reservoirs. Herein, we thoroughly investigated the pore structure of Qiongzhusi shale from Northeastern Yunnan, China, utilizing field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry (HP-MIP), and low-pressure gas adsorption (LP-N2/CO2GA). Scale-dependent fractal properties were identified to evaluate the applicability of fluid intrusion methods. Furthermore, geological factors controlling the pore structure were analyzed. Fractal analysis via the Menger sponge model and the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill model revealed scale-dependent fractal features that act as a “fingerprint” to identify sequential stages during measurements. Mercury intrusion was identified in three stages: pore volume filling, matrix compression, and pore structure damage. Matrix compression appeared at approximately 25 MPa, corresponding to 50 nm in pore size; thereby, HP-MIP is unreliable for characterizing pores below 50 nm. Likewise, N2 adsorption was identified in four stages: micropore filling, monolayer adsorption, multilayer adsorption, and capillary condensation. As the fractal dimensions from the micropore filling stage are invalid for certain samples, LP-N2GA is inadequate for micropore characterization. To cover full-scale pore size distribution (PSD), LP-CO2GA, LP-N2GA, and HP-MIP were employed to characterize micropores (<2 nm), mesopores (2–50 nm), and macropores (>50 nm), relatively. The resulting PSDs are unimodal or bimodal, with peaks at 0.3–1.0 and 5–20 nm. The Qiongzhusi shale contains interparticle pores along brittle mineral edges and within clay interlayers, intraparticle pores within pyrite framboids and dissolution-related minerals, and organic matter (OM) pores with varying morphologies influenced by surrounding minerals. OM and quartz were found to promote pore development, with quartz-based frameworks protecting internal OM pores from compaction-induced damage. However, clays demonstrate a multifaceted impact on pore structure, with interlayer pores between illite–smectite mixed layers contributing to pore volume, while illites negatively affect pore volume. This study provides valuable insights into full-scale pore characterization and shale reservoir evaluation.

Abstract:Shale oil/gas is a crucial development in the exploitation of unconventional reservoirs. However, owing to the small pore size and complicated structure, finding an inexpensive and accurate method of accurately representing the pore structure has become an important issue. This paper summarizes and compares the current popular shale pore structure research methods and investigates three rock samples from well Z-1 and two rock samples from well Z-2 in block Z in the Ordos Basin, China. The components of the shale were analyzed using X-ray diffraction. In addition to the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory, there are also the Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda theoriesfor mesopores and the Horvath and Kawazoe method for macropore. Based on these theories, the pore size distribution was analyzed using nitrogen adsorption experiments at low temperatures. According to the fractal model of Frenkel–Halsey–Hill, the characteristics of the shale pore structure were studied. The fractal dimension values of single and bilinear segments fitted by double logarithm curves were applied to describe the fractal features of the pores, and the differences were compared. The relationship between the fractal characteristics and the pore parameters was analyzed. The outcomes of the tests indicate that the shale is mainly comprised of kaolinite, illite, and quartz, and the N2 adsorption curves are type IV. There are hysteresis loops, which indicate the occurrence of multi-layer adsorption. The fractal analysis revealed that the shales have significant fractal characteristics, which are chiefly affected by the mesopores and macropores. Otherwise, the fractal dimension values of the single line segment D and the bilinear segments D1 and D2 generally consistently represent the fractal pore features. Relationships were found between the pore parameters and the fractal dimensions.

Abstract:A systematic study of the pore structure characteristics of Lower Cambrian shales in the southeastern Upper Yangtze Platform, was conducted using organic geochemistry, mineralogy, nitrogen adsorption, physical property analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that: 1) The Total organic carbon (TOC) content shows a strong correlation with quartz and clay minerals. Shales with low TOC content and rich in clay minerals primarily exhibit slit-shaped and narrow slit-like inter-clay particle pores with pore size distribution is dominated by mesopores and macropores. Shales with high TOC content predominantly feature narrow slit-like and ink bottle-shaped pores with pore size distribution dominated by micropores and mesopores. 2) Shale pore structures vary significantly under different gas content and preservation conditions. Shales under favorable preservation conditions exhibit a relatively "high porosity, low permeability, and high gas content" pattern, with well-developed organic pores and a strong pore-permeability correlation. In contrast, shales under unfavorable preservation conditions appear dense, with excessively developed fractures increasing both average pore size and local permeability. The pore-permeability correlation is weak, presenting a relatively "low porosity, high permeability, and low gas content" pattern. 3) TOC content plays a crucial role in controlling pore structure, showing overall positive correlations with pore volume, specific surface area, and porosity, and negative correlations with pore size. High TOC content enhances shale plasticity, resulting in lower pore diameters. Factors such as compaction and unfavorable preservation conditions lead to the shrinkage, collapse, and closure of some narrow pore throats, negatively impacting pore volume, specific surface area, brittleness, and fractal dimension, exhibiting a negative correlation with TOC content. 4) The pore structure of Lower Cambrian shales is complex, with fractal dimensions D 1 and D 2 exhibiting negative correlations with average pore size and positive correlations with TOC, specific surface area, and total pore volume. A high D 1 value indicates well-preserved nanoscale pore surface structures with low complexity, suggesting minimal alteration by external fluids and better shale gas preservation. D 1 serves as an indicator for shale gas content and preservation conditions. D 2 shows better correlations with various pore structure parameters, making it suitable for characterizing pore structures.

Abstract:Abstract Pore structure characterization and its effect on methane adsorption on shale kerogen are crucial to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of gas storage, transport, and reserves evaluation. In this study, we use 3D scanning confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray nano-computed tomography (nano-CT), and low-pressure N 2 adsorption analysis to analyze the pore structures of the shale. Additionally, the adsorption behavior of methane on shales with different pore structures is investigated by molecular simulations. The results show that the SEM image of the shale sample obviously displays four different pore shapes, including slit pore, square pore, triangle pore, and circle pore. The average coordination number is 4.21 and the distribution of coordination numbers demonstrates that pores in the shale have high connectivity. Compared with the adsorption capacity of methane on triangle pores, the adsorption capacity on slit pore, square pore, and circle pore are reduced by 9.86%, 8.55%, and 6.12%, respectively. With increasing pressure, these acute wedges fill in a manner different from the right or obtuse angles in the other pores. This study offers a quantitative understanding of the effect of pore structure on methane adsorption in the shale and provides better insight into the evaluation of gas storage in geologic shale reservoirs.

Abstract:The Lower Permian Shanxi Formation in the Eastern Ordos Basin is a set of transitional facies shale, and it is also a key target for shale gas exploration in China. Based on lithofacies classification by X-ray diffraction and kerogen type identification, nanoscale reservoir space, pore volume, pore size distribution, surface area, and fractal characterization were studied using comprehensive methods including N 2 and CO 2 adsorption, mercury injection capillary pressure, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and nuclear magnetic resonance. The results indicate that Shanxi Formation shale can be subdivided into five types of lithofacies: clayey shale (lithofacies I), siliceous clayey shale (lithofacies II), siliceous shale (lithofacies IV), calcareous siliceous shale (lithofacies V), and siliceous calcareous shale (lithofacies VI). Lithofacies V and lithofacies VI are the best lithofacies in terms of organic pore morphology, connectivity, and development degree, followed by lithofacies II. Inorganic pores and microfractures are well developed in all lithofacies. The majority of pores in lithofacies I comprise organic mesopores, but pore volume is contributed by a few inorganic macropores. The pore types and pore volume contributors of lithofacies II are organic macropores. The pore size distribution of lithofacies IV is very similar to that of lithofacies I. The pore size distribution of lithofacies V shows typical bimodal characteristics. It is suggested that the inorganic pores of lithofacies V are mainly macropores, which have the greatest contribution to pore volume, followed by organic mesopores. Total organic carbon (TOC) and thermal maturity do not present obvious controls on pore structure. Vitrinite is the main kerogen type in lithofacies II and IV, and this is associated with disfavored morphology, low connectivity, and poor development degree of organic pores. In contrast, sapropelinite is observed in other shale lithofacies, and it is suggested to be an effective kerogen type that contributes to better development of organic pores.

Abstract:Abstract Quantitative characterization of pore structure and analysis of influencing factors of methane adsorption are important segments in shale gas reservoir and resources evaluation and have not been systematically carried out in marine–continental shale series. A series of integrated methods, including total organic carbon (TOC) contents, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, mineral composition analysis, pore structure measurement, high-pressure CH 4 adsorption analysis and FE-SEM observation, were conducted on 12 transitional shale samples of well WBC-1 in the southern North China Basin (SNCB). The results indicate that TOC contents of the transitional shales range from 1.03 to 8.06% with an average of 2.39%. The transitional shale consists chiefly of quartz, white mica and clay minerals. Interparticle pore, intraparticle pore, dissolution pore and microfracture were observed in the FE-SEM images. The specific surface area (SSA) of BET for the samples ranges from 3.3612 to 12.1217 m 2 /g (average: 6.9320 m 2 /g), whereas the DR SSA for the samples ranges from 12.9844 to 35.4267 m 2 /g (average: 19.67 m 2 /g). The Langmuir volume ( V L ) ranges from 2.05 to 4.75 cm 3 /g (average = 2.43 cm 3 /g). There is unobvious correction between BET and DR SSA with TOC contents, which means inorganic pores are the main component of pore space in the transitional shale from the SNCB. The relationship of SSA and pore volume shows that micropore has a greater impact on the CH 4 adsorption capacity than mesopore–macropore in the transitional shale. Different from shales in other petroliferous basin, clay minerals are the primary factor affecting adsorption capacity of CH 4 for transitional shale in this study. The pore structure of the transitional shale for this study is characterized by higher fractal dimension and more heterogeneous pore structure compared to shale in other petroliferous basin. This study provides an example and new revelation for the influencing factors of pore structure and methane adsorption capacity of marine–continental transitional shale.

Investigation on the Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Nanopores in High-Rank Coal: Implications for the Methane Adsorption Capacity

Abstract:The structure and fractal characteristics of nanopores of high-rank coal were investigated using an approach that integrates N₂ adsorption and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results indicated that the high-rank coal of the Shanxi Formation has a complex pore-fracture network composed of organic matter pores, mineral-related pores, and microfractures. The pore type of high-rank coal tends to be complicated, and the main pore types are inkbottle pores and open pores, which are more conducive to methane enrichment. The Ro,max has a negative relationship with the total pore volume. In addition, the ash and inertinite contents show a positive correlation with the average pore size (APS), while the fixed carbon content exhibits a negative relationship with the APS. The pore structure of high-rank coal is controlled not only by the degree of metamorphism but also by coal composition, which leads to the variation in pore structure becoming more complicated. With the increase in coal metamorphism, high-rank coal with high amounts of fixed carbon content generally possesses a higher irregularity in pore structure. No obvious relationship was observed between D₂ and the coal components, which indicates that the pore structure, ash content, moisture content and other factors controlled by the metamorphism of coal have different effects on D₂ that lead to this inapparent relationship. A negative relationship exists between adsorption volume and D1, which indicates that the high irregularity of the pore structure is not conducive to methane absorption and that no obvious correlation exists between the adsorption volume and D₂. In the high-rank coal, the high D1 value represents the complexity and heterogeneity of the pore structure and represents a low adsorption affinity for methane molecules; in addition, D₂ has no effect on the methane adsorption capacity.
Fractal characteristics of shale pore structure and its influence on seepage flow

Abstract:The migration law of shale gas has a significant influence on the seepage characteristics of shale, and the flow of the gas is closely related to the pore structure. To explore the influence of shale pore parameters on permeability in different diffusion zones, the pore structure of the shale in the Niutitang Formation in Guizhou, China, was analysed based on liquid nitrogen adsorption experiments and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The relationship among fractal dimension, organic carbon content (TOC) and BET-specific surface area was analysed based on the fractal dimension of shale pores calculated using the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill model. Shale permeability was calculated using the Knudsen number (Kn) and permeability equation, and the influence of the fractal dimension and porosity in different diffusion zones on shale permeability was analysed. Previous studies have shown that: (i) the pores of shale in the Niutitang Formation, Guizhou are mainly distributed within 1-100 nm, with a small total pore volume per unit mass, average pore diameter, large BET specific surface area and porosity; (ii) fractal dimension has a negative correlation with average pore diameter and TOC content and a quadratic relationship with BET specific surface area; and (iii) permeability has a positive correlation with Kn, porosity and fractal dimension. In the transitional diffusion zone, fractal dimension and porosity have a significant impact on permeability. In the Knudsen diffusion zone, porosity has no obvious effect on permeability. The methodologies and results presented will enable more accurate characterization of the complexity of pore structures of porous media and allow further understanding of the seepage law of shale gas.

Abstract:Taking the Longmaxi deep-marine shale gas reservoir in Zigong region as the research target, this paper aimed to characterize the nano-scale pore structure and investigate the reservoirs' heterogeneity based on fractal theory. By conducting a series of experimental studies, mainly including TOC, XRD, gas adsorption (N 2 and CH 4 ), we were able to clarify the main controlling factors for the heterogeneity of deep shale pore structure. Our results indicated that the deep marine shale possessed a significant amount of organic matter, as the average TOC value is 3.68%. The XRD analysis results show that quartz and clay were the main mineral types, and the total content of these two minerals averaged 77.5%. Positive correlations were observed between TOC and quartz, while TOC decreases as the clay mineral increases, this discovery indicating that quartz is biogenic. Based on FHH (Frenkele-Halseye-Hill) method, by using the LTNA adsorption isotherms, we took relative pressure P/P 0 =0.5 as the boundary, then two separate fractal dimension were deduced, D 1 and D 2 represent the fractal characteristics of small and large pores, respectively. Our study revealed that both D 1 and D 2 demonstrated positive correlations with N 2 adsorption pore volume and adsorption specific surface area, while negatively correlated with the adsorption average pore diameter. Moreover, the two fractal dimensions showed positive associations with TOC and quartz and negative associations with clay. Additionally, D 1 and D 2 also demonstrated a positive correlation with Langmuir volume. The presence of micropores was found to significantly influence the formation of an irregular pore structure in shale. As the pore size decreased, the adsorption specific surface area increased, resulting in a more intricate pore structure, and the fractal dimension of the pores elevated, ultimately. This intricate structure is beneficial for the accumulation of shale gas. These research findings offer valuable insights for the comprehensive assessment of deep shale gas, and enrich our knowledge of enrichment mechanisms in deep shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Fractal dimension is a critical parameter to evaluate the heterogeneity of complex pore structure in tight sandstone gas and other low permeability reservoirs. To quantify the fractal dimension of tight sandstone at various pore size classes and evaluate their implications on mineral composition and nano pore structure parameters, we conducted an integrated approach of N2 adsorption/desorption experiment (N2-GA), X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) on Sulige tight sandstone reservoirs. By comparing the nine types of fractal dimensions calculated from N2 adsorption data, we put forward the concept of “concentrated” fractal dimensions and “scattered” fractal dimensions (DN2, DN3, DN5, DN7 and DN8) for the first time according to its concentration extent of distribute in different samples. Result shows that mineral composition has a significant influence of a different level on specific surface area (SSA), pore volume (PV), and fractal dimensions (DN), respectively, where the “scattered” fractal dimension is more sensitive to certain specific property of the reservoir, including mineral content and the specific surface area contribution rate (Sr) of type II mesopores (Mesopore-II: 10~50nm). In addition, three type of hysteresis loops were distinguished corresponding to different pore shape combination of N2-GA isotherm curve, which reveals that pore structure heterogeneity is mainly controlled by inkbottle-shaped pores and the volume contribution rate (Vr) of mesopores in this study area. These findings could contribute to a better understanding of the controlling effect of pore heterogeneity on natural gas storage and adsorption.
