Abstract:Light availability is a primary factor influencing the growth and survival of tree seedlings in the forest understory. The effects of growth irradiance on the growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of an evergreen shrub, Gardenia jasminoides, were investigated with three levels of light: full light, 52.2% light and 18.2% light. The results showed that G. jasminoides grown under 18.2% light attained the lowest plant height and the highest crown diameter. The highest and lowest values of ground diameter were obtained in the 52.2% light and 18.2% light environments, respectively. Leaf area increased in plants grown under shade conditions. G. jasminoides grown under 52.2% light had the greatest leaf biomass, stem biomass and total biomass. Shade resulted in significant reductions in electron transport rate through PSII (ETR), photochemical quenching (qP) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). Plants grown under shade conditions had lower heat dissipation in the antenna and higher excess energy. Chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, Chl (a + b) and carotenoids (Car) increased and the Chl a/b ratio decreased in response to shade. Area-based photosynthesis (Aarea), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) decreased significantly with decreasing growth irradiance, while there was no significant difference in mass-based photosynthesis (Amass) between full light and 52.2% light. G. jasminoides had the highest whole-plant photosynthesis (Aplant) value in 52.2% light and the lowest value in 18.2% light. The results suggest that approximately 52.2% light is the optimum growth irradiance for G. jasminoides.
Improving Production Yield and Nutritional Quality of Coastal Glehnia Using Developed Hydroponic Nutrient Solution in Controlled Environment Agriculture

Abstract:This study was conducted to develop a nutrient solution for coastal glehnia, evaluate the performance of the newly developed nutrient solution, and determine an adequate electrical conductivity (EC) level for growth and bioactive compounds production in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Coastal glehnia plants cultivated in Hoagland nutrient solution with EC 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 dS·m−1 for 20 weeks had the same ratio of cations and anions in terms of macro essential elements. Based on the ratio, a new nutrient solution for coastal glehnia was developed. Subsequently, seedlings with two main leaves were grown in Hoagland nutrient solution (H1 and H2; EC 1 and 2 dS·m−1) or a newly developed nutrient solution (N1–5; EC 1–5 dS·m−1) for 23 weeks (about 6 months), and the leaves were harvested every 5 weeks. The N1 treatment resulted in significantly higher accumulated and average shoot fresh and dry weights than in the H1 and H2 treatments. In addition, the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity per shoot were the highest under the N1 treatment. Individual bioactive compounds, such as xanthotoxin, bergapten, and imperatorin, levels per shoot with the N1 treatment were significantly higher than those with the H1 and H2 treatments. These results demonstrate that the newly developed nutrient solution of EC 1 dS·m−1 increases the biomass and bioactive compound levels of coastal glehnia and is suitable for cultivating coastal glehnia in CEA, such as vertical farms and greenhouses.

Effects of Led Light Intensity and Carbon Dioxide Concentration on the Growth of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) in a Plant Factory

Abstract:This research aimed to investigate the effects of light intensity and the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on spinach’s growth during vegetative stage in plant factory (PF). Two experiments were conducted with different CO2 concentration in closed chamber (500 ppm and 800 ppm). In each experiment, plants were hydroponically grown under three light intensities of 115, 140 and 160 μmol.m-2s-1. Growth’s parameters were determined at different growth stages (T30, T37 and T44 respectively to 30, 37 and 44 days after sowing). ANOVA analysis and non-parametric Kruskal analysis of variance were used to evaluate the statistical significance of the treatment effects. The results showed that, before 30 days old, the increase of light intensity was not significantly effected to the growth of plant. During later growing periods (30 days old afterward), the increase of light intensity remarkably boost up yield’s related traits such as leaf number, fresh mass and dry mass under 500ppm CO2 concentration. The combination of light intensity and CO2concentration at 800ppm showed the plant growth indicators increased significantly at the T37 and T44 stages (after 30 days old), especially at the last week of growth period, fresh weight and dry weight of plants were significantly different at the light treatment L2, increased 37% and 57.6%, respectively as compared to light treament only. The results suggested that, during latest growing period, the average light intensity of 140 μmol.m-2s-1combining with elevating CO2 concentration is an alternatively way to enhance spinach growth. The findings of this study could be helpful for growers to improve growing conditions for a better development of spinach in the indoor farming (PF)
Effects of Different Hydroponic Conditions on the Growth and Total Saponin Accumulation of Gynostemma pentaphyllum

Abstract:Gynostemma pentaphyllum is an important medicine-food homology plant. It enjoys the reputation of ‘Southern ginseng’ as it contains compounds of ginsenosides. As wild resources of G. pentaphyllum depleted gradually, artificial introduction and cultivation of G. pentaphyllum has become an inevitable trend. However, due to soil irrigation, fertilization,and pesticide use, problems such as unstable quality of medicinal materials and excessive heavy metal content in G. pentaphyllum occur from time to time, which seriously affects its standardized cultivation and the quality and safety of medicinal materials. Hydroponic production has the advantages of short cycle, high yield, no continuous cropping obstacles,and can effectively avoid heavy metal pollution, so it is widely used in the production of various Chinese medicinal materials. In this study, G. pentaphyllum seedlings were treated with different nutrient solution, temperature, light intensity and photoperiod. After that, growth characteristics and accumulation of total saponins of G. pentaphyllum were examined to obtain the most suitable hydroponics conditions, and thus provide reference and technical support for the large-scale production and organic cultivation of G. pentaphyllum. The results showed that Japanese Yamzaki formula with pH value 6.0 was the best nutrient solution for hydroponics of G. pentaphyllum. Correlation analysis showed that under different nutrient solution conditions, the total saponin content of single plant was highly positively correlated with plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, fresh weight per plant and dry weight per plant, indicating that the cultivation of high-biomass plants was the key of the cultivation of high-quality plants of G. pentaphyllum. Under variable temperature of 20 to 30 ℃, photoperiod of 10 to 14 hours of light per day, and light intensity of 100 μmol/（m~2·s）, seedlings of G. pentaphyllum grew well and the total saponin content of the dry samples exceeded 3%, which was higher than the existing standards. This study would provide a scientific basis for the realization of double precise control of production and quality of G. pentaphyllum, and lay the foundation for the future research on large-scale production and quality standards of it.

Abstract:Various hilling materials (rice hulls, pine sawdust, and perlite) were compared to produce sprout vegetables using beach silvertop ( Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schm. ex Miq.). We have investigated the yield, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant capacities (DPPH, ABTS), phenolic compounds, and volatile compounds of G. littoralis sprout vegetables. Comparing the yield and phenolic compounds according to the hilling materials, the rice hulls treatment was the most and followed by sawdust and perlite. The leaves and stems of G. littoralis sprout vegetable contain approximately 27 volatile compounds. The sawdust treatment had a pine scent even during the hilling process, and these scent components were entirely absorbed by the stem. The result suggested that sawdust treatment, like rice hulls, had a high yield and high content of beneficial compounds, but the stem of G. littoralis had a pine tree scent, reducing the inherent scent of G. littoralis .

Abstract:Pyropia haitanensis was cultured under two CO 2 (410 (LC), 1000 (HC) μL L -1 ) concentrations and six chloramphenicol (CAP)-methanol solutions (0, 0+methanol, 10, 50, 100, 250 μg mL -1 ) to investigate the effects of elevated CO 2 and CAP on its growth, photosynthesis and biochemical characteristics. HC had no obvious effects on the growth rate (RGR) with CAP in the range of 10 to 100 μg mL -1 , but the decrease of RGR by HC was statistically significant with the CAP dosage at 250 μg mL -1 . HC had no significant effect on net photosynthetic rates (P n ) in the present of CAP (10-250 μg mL -1 ). CAP greatly reduced net photosynthesis as well as the maximal photochemical yield (F v /F m ) and photosynthetic efficiency (α ETR ). In contrast, the maximum relative electron transport rates (rETR m ) were almost constant with the CAP dosage from 10 to 100 μg mL -1 . HC significantly increased the energy fluxes (per RC) for absorption (ABS/RC), trapping (TR o /RC) and transport fluxes (ET o /RC) with the dosage of CAP at 250 μg mL -1 . Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that CAP was positively correlated with the synthesis of free amino acids (FAA), contents of umami-, sweet- and essential AA were significantly enhanced with the interaction of HC and higher CAP dosage at 100 μg mL -1 , which led to the variation of flavor in algae. Furthermore, phycobiliproteins and soluble protein (SP) contents were remarkably reduced by CAP. Contents of chlorophyll a (Chl a ), carotenoids (Car), soluble carbohydrates (SC) and C/N ratios were almost unchanged among treatments. The study indicates that future ocean acidification has no obvious effects on the biomass productivity of P. haitanensis , maintained steady photosynthetic activities with the CAP (within 100 μg mL -1 ) and induces better flavor. The data obtained have important theoretical relevance for in-depth understanding of algal responses to global changes and oceanic contamination.

Abstract:Indoor growing systems with light-emitting diodes offer advantages for the growth of tomato seedlings through uniform and optimized environmental conditions which increase consistency between plants and growing cycles. CO 2 enrichment has been shown to improve the yield of crops. Thus, this research aimed to characterize the effects of varied light intensities and CO 2 enrichment on the growth, morphology, and production efficiency of tomato seedlings in indoor growing systems. Four tomato cultivars, “Florida-47 R,” “Rebelski,” “Maxifort,” and “Shin Cheong Gang,” were subjected to three different daily light integrals (DLIs) of 6.5, 9.7, and 13 mol m –2 d –1 with a percent photon flux ratio of 40 blue:60 red and an end-of-day far-red treatment of 5 mmol m –2 d –1 . The plants were also subjected to three different CO 2 concentrations: 448 ± 32 (400-ambient), 1010 ± 45 (1000), and 1568 ± 129 (1600) μmol mol –1 . Temperature was maintained at 24.3°C ± 0.48/16.8°C ± 1.1 (day/dark; 22.4°C average) and relative humidity at 52.56 ± 8.2%. Plant density was 1000 plants m –2 until canopy closure. Morphological measurements were conducted daily to observe the growth response over time. In addition, data was collected to quantify the effects of each treatment. The results showed increases in growth rate with increases in the DLI and CO 2 concentration. In addition, CO 2 enrichment to 1000–1600 μmol mol –1 increased the light use efficiency (g DM mol –1 applied ) by 38–44%, and CO 2 enrichment to 1600 μmol mol –1 did not result in any additional increase on shoot fresh mass, shoot dry mass, and stem extension. However, the net photosynthetic rate obtained with 1600 μmol mol –1 was 31 and 68% higher than those obtained with 1000 and 400 μmol mol –1 , respectively. Furthermore, the comparison of the light and CO 2 treatment combinations with the control (13 mol m –2 d –1 –400CO 2 ) revealed that the plants subjected to 6.5DLI–1600CO 2 , 9.7DLI–1000CO 2 , and 9.7DLI–1600CO 2 treatment combinations exhibited the same growth rate as the control plants but with 25–50% less DLI. Furthermore, two treatment combinations (13.0DLI–1000CO 2 and 13.0DLI–1600CO 2 ) were associated with the consumption of comparable amount of energy but increased plant growth by 24–33%.

Studies on the Optimum Light Intensity for Growth of Panax Ginseng II. Effect of Light Intensity on the Contents of Saponin and Free Sugar in the Ginseng Leaf

Abstract:This study was conducted to define the effects of light intensity on the amount of saponin and free sugar and the ratio of triol group saponin and diol group saponin (PT/PD) in the leaf of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. 4-Year-old ginseng plants were grown under the shadings of different light transmittance rate(LTR) of 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% for 5 months and the leafiets were sampled from 2nd low at late August to determine the amount of saponin and free sugar.-Rd was main ginseuoside in the diol group saponin but in triol group saponin, ginsenoside-Re showed highest value and next was ginsenoside- and respectively. Up to 20% of light transmittance rate (LTR), the ginseng leaves grown under high light intensity showed an increase in the amount of total saponin and the ratio of PT/PD but the amount of total saponin and the ratio of PT/PD but the amount of total saponin and the ratio of PT/PD was decreased at the ginseng leaves grown under the shading of 30% LTR. The ginseng leaves grown under the shading of 20% LTR showed a significant increase in the amount of glucose and fructose but a significant decrease of sucrose content. A significant positive correlation () was recognized between the of amount of total saponin and glucose.

Abstract:Pinellia ternate (Thunb.) Breit (Araceae) is a shade-tolerant perennial medicinal plant, but its optimum light intensity is not sufficiently known. Hence, the influence of light intensity on the physiological responses, growth and secondary metabolic products in P. ternata under four light conditions (15%, 25%, 45% and 100% of full sunlight) in a greenhouse were to be investigated. The results show that the fresh and dry tuber weight, leaf area, tuber number and propagation index were highest in P. ternata grown under the intermediate light level (45% sunlight). In contrast, 15% sunlight induced the lowest growth parameters but the highest plant height. Sunlight from 15% to 45% significantly increased the chlorophyll concentration compared to that under full sunlight conditions. Moreover, 100% sunlight enhanced the POD and CAT activities and induced MDA, total alkaloid, guanosineand succinic acid accumulation. The maximum yields of total alkaloids, guanosineand succinic acid occurred under 45% sunlight. Overall, 45% sunlight was the most efficient way of improving the tuber yields and qualities of P. ternata. These results suggest that P. ternata is suitable for growth in a moderate-low-light environment and an appropriate light control can produce higher tuber and secondary metabolite yields within agroforestry systems.

Abstract:Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is a shade plant, and its leaves are an important medicinal part of P. ginseng . Light intensity plays a crucial role in physiological activities and metabolite accumulation in P. ginseng . Currently, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological changes and quality under different light intensities in P. ginseng leaves. Therefore, we investigated the changes in photosynthetic physiology, secondary metabolism, transcriptomics, and metabolomics of P. ginseng leaves under different light intensities [T20 (20 μmol m -2 ·s -1 ), T50 (50 μmol m -2 ·s −1 ), T100 (100 μmol m −2 ·s −1 )]]. Higher light intensity positively influenced the yield, photosynthesis, and accumulation of polysaccharides, soluble sugars, terpenoids, and ginsenosides in P. ginseng leaves. The T100 treatment notably promoted the accumulation of ginsenosides in the leaves, resulting in a 68.32% and 45.55% increase in total ginsenosides compared to the T20 and T50 treatments, respectively. Ginsenosides Rg1, Re, Rb1, Rc, Rg2, Rb2, Rb3, and Rd were 1.28-, 1.47-, 2.32-, 1.64-, 1.28-, 2.59-, 1.66-, and 2.28-times higher than in the T20 treatment. Furthermore, 285 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) and 4218 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the metabolome and transcriptome of P. ginseng leaves, respectively, were identified. 13 triterpenoid saponins were significantly upregulated, and three were downregulated. The expression of genes encoding photosystem II reaction center proteins was upregulated under the T100 treatment, thereby increasing photosynthetic activity. The T100 treatment enhanced the expression of genes involved in photosynthetic carbon and energy metabolism in P. ginseng . The expression of antenna protein synthesis genes was upregulated under the T20, which increased the ability to capture light in P. ginseng leaves. T100 upregulated the expression of HMGR, SS, CYP716A53v2, UGT74AE, PgUGT1, and UGTPg45, thereby promoting terpene and ginsenoside synthesis. In summary, 100 μmol m −2 ·s −1 was conducive to quality formation of P. ginseng leaves. This study elucidates molecular mechanisms underlying the photosynthetic physiology and ginsenoside synthesis in P. ginseng under varying light intensities and provides a theoretical basis for the P. ginseng cultivation and its industrial production of secondary metabolites.

Abstract:The dynamic fluctuations of CO2 concentration in the tissue culture growth chamber after transplantation of petunia, chrysanthemum and tomato plantlets were recorded with a real-time control system to determine the critical CO2 concentration levels of 35μll−1 at which CO2 enrichment is needed. The experimental data showed that the tissue-cultured plantlets of petunia, chrysanthemum and tomato had the same CO2 concentration dynamics. The results indicated that CO2 enrichment was proper on the second day after transplantation. Petunia plantlets were used to conduct experiments under PPFD of 80μmolm−2s−1, and CO2 concentrations of 350±50μll−1, 650±50μll−1 and 950±50μll−1 as well as medium moisture contents of 60%, 70% and 80%, with the result that plantlets grew better under CO2 concentration of 650±50μll−1 than under the other two concentrations with all the different media water contents. Three media water contents under the same CO2 concentration produced plantlets with the same quality. The impacts of CO2 concentrations on plantlets are more important than those of the media water contents. Sugar-free tissue culture, as compared with the conventional culture, showed that CO2 enrichment to 350±50μll−1 can promote the growth of the cultured plantlets. Sugar-free tissue culture produced healthy plantlets with thick roots, almost equivalent to the common plantlets.
Changes in Endogenous Phytohormones of Gerbera jamesonii Axillary Shoots Multiplied under Different Light Emitting Diodes Light Quality

Abstract:Light quality is essential in in vitro cultures for morphogenesis process. Light emitting diodes system (LED) allows adjustment as desired and the most appropriate light spectrum. The study analyzed the influence of different LED light quality on the balance of endogenous phytohormones and related compounds (PhRC) in in vitro multiplied axillary shoots of Gerbera jamesonii. Over a duration of 40 days, the shoots were exposed to 100% red light, 100% blue light, red and blue light at a 7:3 ratio with control fluorescent lamps. Every 10 days plant tissues were tested for their PhRC content with the use of an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). Shoots' morphometric features were analyzed after a multiplication cycle. We identified 35 PhRC including twelve cytokinins, seven auxins, nine gibberellins, and seven stress-related phytohormones. Compounds content varied from 0.00052 nmol/g to 168.15 nmol/g of dry weight (DW). The most abundant group were stress-related phytohormones (particularly benzoic and salicylic acids), and the least abundant were cytokinins (about 370 times smaller content). LED light did not disturb the endogenous phytohormone balance, and more effectively mitigated the stress experienced by in vitro grown plants than the fluorescent lamps. The stress was most effectively reduced under the red LED. Red and red:blue light lowered tissue auxin levels. Blue LED light lowered the shoot multiplication rate and their height, and induced the highest content of gibberellins at the last stage of the culture.
Growth and Accumulation of Secondary Metabolites in Perilla as Affected by Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density and Electrical Conductivity of the Nutrient Solution

Abstract:The global demand for medicinal plants is increasing. The quality of plants grown outdoors, however, is difficult to control. Myriad environmental factors influence plant growth and directly impact biosynthetic pathways, thus affecting the secondary metabolism of bioactive compounds. Plant factories use artificial lighting to increase the quality of medicinal plants and stabilize production. Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and electrical conductivity (EC) of nutrient solutions are two important factors that substantially influence perilla (Perilla frutescens, Labiatae) plant growth and quality. To identify suitable levels of PPFD and EC for perilla plants grown in a plant factory, the growth, photosynthesis, and accumulation of secondary metabolites in red and green perilla plants were measured at PPFD values of 100, 200, and 300 μmol m-2 s-1 in nutrient solutions with EC values of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 dS m-1. The results showed significant interactive effects between PPFD and EC for both the fresh and dry weights of green perilla, but not for red perilla. The fresh and dry weights of shoots and leafy areas were affected more by EC than by PPFD in green perilla, whereas they were affected more by PPFD than by EC in red perilla. Leaf net photosynthetic rates were increased as PPFD increased in both perilla varieties, regardless of EC. The perillaldehyde concentration (mg g-1) in red perilla was unaffected by the treatments, but accumulation in plants (mg per plant) was significantly enhanced as the weight of dry leaves increased. Perillaldehyde concentrations in green perilla showed significant differences between combinations of the highest PPFD with the highest EC and the lowest PPFD with the lowest EC. Rosmarinic acid concentration (mg g-1) was increased in a combination of low EC and high PPFD conditions. Effect of Plant Growth Regulators on Physiological Productivity and Seed Quality of Soybean [Glycine Max (L.) Merill]

Abstract:The current study was carried out on soybean variety JS 20-98 seeds that were treated to varying concentrations of plant growth regulators (PGRs). These seeds were used in field studies using Randomised Block Design (RBD) with four replications, and the observations were recorded on phenophasic observations, such as days to 50% flowering, days to pod formation, days to seed formation, days to physiological maturity, and days to field maturity.Determination of dry matter production and its partitioning in various plant parts (leaves, branches, main stem, and pod) at 45 DAS, 60 DAS, 75 DAS, and 90 DAS. Physiological obsdervations (Growth analytical parameters), Leaf Area Index (LAI), Leaf Area Duration (LAD), Crop Growth Rate (CGR), Relative Growth Rate (RGR), Specific Leaf Area (SLA), Specific Leaf Weight (SLW), Biomass Duration (BMD), Chlorophyll Content Index (CCI), Relative Water Content (RWC). Yield and yield components included viz; plant height (cm), number of branches plant-1, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, pod length (mm), pod width (mm), pod girth (mm), seed index (g), seed yield (g plant-1and kg ha-1), biological yield (g plant-1 and kg ha-1), harvest index (%). The biochemical estimation includes moisture (%), ash (%), crude fibre (%), total carbohydrate (%), protein (%), and fat (%). However, seed quality traits include germination (%), seedling length (cm), seed vigour index-I, seed vigour index-II, seedling dry weight (g), root length (cm), and shoot length (cm) in soybean. The treatment GA @ 3 ml L-1 (T5) produced the highest seed yield of 2429.93 kg ha-1, biological yield of 6804.47 kg ha-1, and harvest index of 35.71% among the six PGR treatments on soybean. The greatest value for seed quality parameters, especially germination (%), seedling dry weight (g), seedling length (cm), seed vigour index-I, and seed vigour index-II was recorded under the treatment GA @ 3 ml L-1 (T5).
Analysis of cell growth, photosynthetic behavior and the fatty acid profile in Tetraselmis subcordiformis under different lighting scenarios

Abstract:Tetraselmis has been investigated as a potential source of lipids. This microalga possesses good growth characteristics and can be used to develop viable platforms for fatty acid production. This research aims to evaluate the effect of high photon flux density with light-dark cycles and light wavelength on biomass production and fatty acid profile in Tetraselmis subcordiformis. A low light control and treatments with high photon flux density with different light-dark cycles (24:0 h, 12:12 h, 1:1 h, and 15:15 min) and different light wavelength (white, green, red, and blue) were evaluated to determine cell concentration, nutrient consumption, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic yields, lipid content, and fatty acid profile. Significant differences were found in all variables, except for phosphate consumption. High photon flux density promotes cell growth with T. subcordiformis reaching biomass productivities of 0.10 g L -1 day -1 when continuous white light is used. However, no differences were observed in biomass productivities and lipid content for all high photon flux density treatments. On the other hand, red light resulted in higher cell growth, with a productivity of 0.12 g L -1 day -1 , and the highest lipid content was achieved under white light. There was a significant effect on the fatty acid profile under different light conditions, with palmitic acid, oleic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid being the most abundant. This study demonstrated that cellular growth and fatty acid profiles in T. subcordiformis can be influenced by different lighting schemes in the cultivation.

Changes in the Photosynthetic Pigment Contents and Transcription Levels of Phycoerythrin-Related Genes in Three Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis Strains Under Different Light Intensities

Abstract:Three Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis strains, including wild type and high-temperature-resistant cultivars 981 and 2007, were studied with the changes in their photosynthetic pigment contents and related gene transcription levels under different light intensities (10, 60, 100, and 200 µmol m−2 s−1). The three G. lemaneiformis strains had the following photosynthetic pigments with high-to-low contents: phycoerythrin (PE), phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin (APC), and chlorophyll a (Chl a). Among the three strains, cultivar 981 had the highest PE content, followed by cultivar 2007. The PC and APC contents were similar among the three strains, but they were higher in cultivars 981 and 2007 than in the wild type. The Chl a contents in the three G. lemaneiformis strains were equal. A low light intensity (10 µmol m−2 s−1) promoted photosynthetic pigment accumulation in G. lemaneiformis and improved the relative PE gene transcription (peA and peB) in a short period (≤ 6 d). A high light intensity decreased the PE content. PebA and PebB, which catalyzed phycoerythrobilin synthesis, showed no compensatory upregulation at a low light intensity among the strains except for the wild type. At a high light intensity, transcription levels of pebA and pebB in the three strains were upregulated. This study provided an experimental basis for elucidating the photosynthesis of G. lemaneiformis. As key genes of algal growth, photosynthesis-related genes served as useful gene markers for screening elite varieties with good traits in breeding. Cultivar 2007 was superior to cultivar 981 in terms of maintaining high pigment levels in a wide range of light intensities, which is the most suitable for aquaculture.

Abstract:Abstract “Red Elite” geraniums were grown from the 6th leaf stage until the visible bud stage in controlled environment (CE) chambers under 3 day/night temperature regimes (27°/13°, 23°/17°, or 20°/20°C) and under enhanced CO 2 (900 μl CO 2 /liter air) at 27°/13°. Three daily light integral treatments, 24.6, 19.8, and 15.1 mol m −2 d −1 , were imposed over each of these 4 treatments. Plants also were grown in a 22714° glasshouse with 2 daily light integral treatments (18.2 or 11.3 mol m −2 d −1 ). A chlormequat (CCC) drench was applied to half of the plants immediately before the treatments were started. For the period between the 6th leaf and visible bud stages, leaf area, leaf area ratio, specific leaf weight, shoot dry weight, leaf canopy height, and time to visible bud were determined mostly by daily mean temperature rather than by day or night temperature. Most plant growth characteristics, but not the flower bud development rate from 6th leaf to visible bud, were enhanced by supplemental CO 2 and suppressed by CCC. After reaching the visible bud stage, plants from some treatments were moved into 24715° CE temperature conditions with or without CO 2 , whereas others were moved to a glasshouse until harvest at the 1st floret anthesis stage. Between visible bud and anthesis, CCC was the major factor affecting vegetative growth regardless of whether the plants were with or without supplemental CO 2 in CE rooms, or in a glasshouse. Anthesis was delayed by about 10 days in the glasshouse compared to the CE treatments but was unaffected by CO 2 or CCC treatments. Carbohydrate concentrations were highest (starch 14%, sugar 5%) in plant leaves grown with supplemental CO 2 and without CCC, and lowest with no added CO 2 but with CCC in all CE treatments. The concentrations were reduced (starch 0.5%, sugar 2.5%) in plant leaves grown in a glasshouse from 6th leaf stage to anthesis because of low daily light integrals and no supplemental CO 2 .

Abstract:Tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM) is a rare phenomenon. We present a case of an invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast metastasizing to a clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Breast cancer (BC) metastasis to the RCC is rarely reported, especially in resected kidney tumor. In several cases reported, IDC was the exclusively histologic type of BC metastasized to RCC. It seems that the different molecular type of IDC doesn't affect the metastatic tendencies to RCC. TTM was an indicator of diffuse disease. For any patient with a history of breast cancer, especially with multi-organs metastasis, resection of kidney tumor should be carefully considered.
[Effects of light quality and germplasm on growth and effective ingredients of Dendrobium officinale germchit]

Abstract:Effects of light quality and germplasm on the growth and effective ingredients of Dendrobium officinale germchit were studied. Under 8 light qualities (red, blue, yellow, green and three different red blue mix light), test-tube plantlets of different families (9 x 66, 17 x 30, 78 x 68) were used in the experiment to measure economical character and determine the content of chlorophyll, polysaccharides and total alkaloids. The results showed that light quality, germplasm and their interaction had a significant effect on the growth of D. officinale germchit. The maximal root length and height of seedling were obtained under red light, under blue light, the stem diameter was thickest and the content of total alkaloids were highest, the content of chlorophyll and polysaccharides of test-tube plantlets under red blue mix light were higher than that of other treatments. This work has laid a foundation for the high quality, low carbon and efficient production of D. officinale, and gives useful tips on production of high quality ingredients.
