Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with excellent mechanical performances have been increasingly sought after in engineering applications such as biotechnology, aerospace, and automotive areas. Through molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, this work systematically assessed the tensile performance of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite reinforced by randomly dispersed two-dimensional diamond-diamane. It is found that randomly dispersed diamane effectively enhances the tensile properties of PMMA with surface functionalization, and the enhancement effect can be remarkably augmented by cross-linking. Simulations reveal that the enhancement effect can be effectively tailored by the alignment of the diamane fillers. The PMMA nanocomposites exhibit much better tensile performance when the diamane fillers are uniformly aligned along the in-plane direction of the filler. Additional investigations show that larger diamane filler is preferred without cross-linking, while smaller diamane filler should be considered when cross-linking is present. Overall, the impacts of different factors on the tensile properties of PMMA nanocomposites are analysed in-depth in this work, which provides atomistic insights for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites with desired mechanical properties.

Abstract:Molecular composites using rigid-rod macromolecules as the reinforcement have attracted tremendous research interest. However, dispersion of rigid-rod macromolecules at molecular level in the matrix remains a great challenge. Herein, we report new epoxy (EP)-based molecular composites with sulfonated aromatic polyamides, poly(p-sulfophenylene terephthalamide) (sPPTA) and poly(benzidine-2,2'-disulfonic acid terephthamide) (PBDT), as the reinforcement, which disperse uniformly in epoxy. Covalent bonds formed by the reaction between the sulfonic acid groups of the polyamides and epoxy prevent reaction-induced phase separation during high temperature curing. The novel molecular composites exhibit extraordinarily high strength and toughness, with maximum tensile strength of sPPTA/EP and PBDT/EP (100.2 +/- 4.8 MPa and 121.9 +/- 12.5 MPa, respectively) increased by similar to 81% and similar to 120%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the improvement of mechanical properties surpasses those of molecular composites, nanofiller reinforced thermosets and liquid crystalline thermosets ever reported.

Abstract:Assessing new polymers for carbon fiber composite applications is critical due to a broadening demand in applications not typical for existing fiber-resin systems. Polydicyclopentadiene, synthesized via Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP), performs exceptionally well in high velocity impact applications, though it is challenging to reinforce with carbon fibers given the unreactive nature of both fiber and resin. In this work, we use a carbon fiber surface modification approach to promote fiber-matrix adhesion via the attachment of small molecules able to participate in the polymerization process. This strategy significantly improved flexural and fracture properties, typically between 15 and 30%, relative to composites reinforced with unmodified fibers. Similarly, the tensile yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were improved using this surface modification strategy, though a small decrease in tensile modulus was observed (<5%). Imaging the fracture surfaces shows a clear difference in adhesion, with good adhesion noted for the fibres which had undergone surface modification.

Abstract:A tapping-mode AFM investigation of core-shell cylindrical polymer brushes (CPBs) on mica shows that they can be ruptured upon spin-coating. Three different CPBs were synthesized, having a methacrylate backbone, carrying branches of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol)methacrylate] (POEGMA), POEGMA-block-poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (POEGMA-b-PDMAEMA), and POEGMA-block-poly[2-(methacryloytoxy)etby] trimethylammoniumiodide] (POEGMA-b-PMETAI). The polymer backbone of core-shell CPB with POEGMA-b-PDMAEMA or POEGMA-b-PMETAI branches is ruptured upon drying on a mica surface, while they are stable in aqueous solution. We propose that the scission behavior Is induced by Coulomb interactions between PDMAEMA or PMETAI corona and the solid surface and that this interaction Is stronger than one or more carbon-carbon single bonds. We control this scission behavior by tuning the surface interactions through switching the surface nature, varying pH, or adding multivalent counterions. Our study demonstrates that core-shell CPB serves as a template to directly compare the weak Intermolecular forces with the strong carbon-carbon covalent bonds.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based organic‒inorganic composites have attracted considerable attention due to PDMS's unique features, such as transparency, softness, biocompatibility, chemical stability, heat resistance, and insulation. To extend the lifespans of organic‒inorganic composites, high mixability and self-healing properties are needed. Herein, organic‒inorganic composite elastomers with reversible cross-links featuring cyclodextrin (CD)-modified PDMS (PDMS-CD) and adamantane (Ad)-modified poly(alkyl acrylate) were prepared to achieve high mixability and molecular adhesion properties. PDMS-CD/P(EA-Ad) (x) was obtained by the solution polymerization of ethyl acrylate (EA) and an adamantane monomer (AdAAm) in the presence of PDMS-CD. x is the molar ratio of Ad to βCD. The excess Ad units in PDMS-CD/P(EA-Ad) (5) result in high stretchability and effective self-healing properties based on molecular adhesion. The stress relaxation tests show that excess amounts of Ad units improve the reformation and exchange characteristics of reversible cross-links. A structural study using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) reveals that many Ad units improve the mixability of PDMS and acrylate polymers to effectively reform reversible cross-links and increase the healing efficiency.

Abstract:In this article, we review current literature on coffee, both regular and decaffeinated, and its potential effects in humans. Moderate coffee consumption is believed to have no persistent effect on blood pressure. Large intake of coffee may increase total cholesterol levels; boiled coffee increases cholesterol levels more than filtered coffee. Consuming more than four cups per day may be associated with increased risk of acute myocardial infarction. There appears to be an association between urinary bladder cancer and coffee consumption. No association was found between ingestion of coffee and incidence of duodenal ulcer and ulcerative colitis. Increased coffee consumption by pregnant women appears to decrease fetal birth weight. Fetal heart rate, respiration, and both maternal and fetal anemia are increased with coffee consumption but coffee has not been shown to be teratogenic. Coffee consumption appears to pose no particular threat in most people if consumed in moderation. Naturally decaffeinated, filter-brewed coffee further diminishes its potential harmful effects.

Abstract:Composites combining the polymer and inorganic phases are ubiquitous in nature and the industry. The relationship between interfacial molecular structures and their mechanical performance is a critical issue to be addressed in practical applications. Structural and mechanical properties of the polymer-inorganic interfaces are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations in this work. Representative material systems are constructed, consisting of compliant polymer films (ultraviolet-light adhesives, polymethyl methacrylate) and brittle inorganic substrates (Si, SiO2, ZrO2). The conformational characteristics of polymer chains near the inorganic surface shows a distinct contrast with that of bulk polymers. Interfacial strength and toughness are calculated from the simulations. We elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and report the material parameters that can be used in continuum models such as the cohesive zone models and assessed by experimental tests. The results allow us to predict the modes of failure, which are determined by the competition between cohesion in the polymer phases and adhesion at the polymer-inorganic interface. In addition, modifying the polymers and interfaces through the molecular weight, crosslink and surface charges is proposed as practical approaches to engineer the mechanical performance of the polymer-inorganic composites.

Abstract:Glass beads, non-modified and modified separately with two different coupling agents, were incorporated in high density polyethylene to prepare composite materials with different interfacial adhesion strengths. Tensile tests show that the mechanical behaviour of the materials is sensitive to the strain rates. The strong interfacial adhesion can delay the occurrence of damage and so increase the load-bearing ability under both monotonic and cyclic loading. In situ tensile tests give damage mechanisms mainly induced by the interfacial debonding. The stronger the interfacial adhesion, the lower the number of glass beads debonded from the matrix under a given stress. The degree of microdamage defined as the percentage of debonded particles is obtained as a function of the applied load. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The properties of rigid particle filled polymers,glass bead-filled polypropylene with different interfacial designs are studied through experiments.The interfacial modification is achieved by the application of coupling agent to improve the interfacial intensity between the particle and the polymer matrix phases.Firstly,tensile and impact experiments are carried out,the mechanical performances before and after the interfacial modification are compared.In addition,based on the SEM observation,discussions on the failure and toughening mechanism of the composites are presented,which betrays that the destructing mode of the composite varies with different interface intensities,and the modification gives rise to the dynamic fracture resistant ability.Then the relations between mesoscopic structures and the macro tensile behaviors are investigated by the one dimensional in situ tension experiments.It is proved that the employment of interfacial modifier has an important influence on the interface debonding in the mesoscopic point of view as well as the macroscopic yielding process of the material.The experimental results of this paper provide a significant guidance for developing new polymer composites.

Abstract:Glass beads, non-modified and modified with coupling agent, were filled separately into high density polyethylene to obtain composite materials with different interfacial adhesion strengths. In situ tensile tests reveal the damage mechanisms, which are mainly induced by the interfacial debonding. The interfacial debonding process is observed and studied. The debonding stress is found to be linearly related to the opening angle formed at two poles of the particles. Initial and final opening angles, in addition to the corresponding debonding stresses, are measured. The interfacial fracture energy obtained by using the Griffith fracture theory is found to be 0.028 J m(-2) and 0.058 J m(-2) for mechanical anchorage and physical entanglement across the interface, respectively. The stronger the interfacial adhesion, the smaller is the maximum opening angle and greater the debonding stress.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites modified with diethylaluminum phosphonate (ADP) and epoxy resin (EP) as flame retardant and toughener, respectively, were prepared via solution method for improvement on both flame retardancy and toughening purposes. The effects of ADP and EP loadings on the viscoelastic, flame retardant and thermomechanical behaviors of the resultant composites were intensively investigated using rheometer, CONE calorimetry, oxygen index (LOI) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), respectively. Heat flux complexity was obviously displayed when ADP and EP loadings increased. DMTA result showed that the increase of the modulus of the composites was primarily due to an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formed by the addition of EP, and the tensile properties were found to be greatly improved. In addition, our study also showed that at an ADP loading of 28% the maximum heat release rate (pHRR) of composites decreased by 63% as compared to neat PMMA with increase by 88% in LOI and V‐0 grade in UL‐94 test achieved. The composites prepared in this study bore excellent fire performance together with desired toughness, and the current work thus has practical significance for further expanding the application range of PMMA composites.

Abstract:Hybrid fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites are receiving important attention in lightweight applications. The fabrication process of hybrid thermoplastic composites is that discontinuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics are injected onto the continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics by over-molding techniques. The key issue during this process is to get a reliable interfacial bonding strength. To understand the bonding mechanism at the heterogeneous interface of hybrid thermoplastic composites which is difficult to obtain through experimental investigations, a series of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were conducted in this paper. The influence of processing parameters on the interfacial characteristics, i.e., the distribution of interfacial high-density enrichment areas, radius of gyration, diffusion coefficient and interfacial energy, were investigated during the forming process of a heterogeneous interface. Simulation results reveal that some of molecule chains get across the interface and tangle with the molecules from the other layer, resulting in the penetration phenomenon near the interface zone. In addition, the melting temperature and injection pressure exhibit positive effects on the interfacial properties of hybrid composites. To further investigate the interfacial bonding strength and fracture mechanism of the heterogeneous interface, the uniaxial tensile and sliding simulations were performed. Results show that the non-bonded interaction energy plays a crucial role during the fracture process of heterogeneous interface. Meanwhile, the failure mode of the heterogeneous interface was demonstrated to evolve with the processing parameters.

Abstract:Interfacial properties are a key factor influencing the overall performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs). A novel interphase with "rigid-flexible coupling" crosslinked network is established by introducing supramolecule pseudopolyrotaxane (PPR) on the high modulus carbon fiber (HMCF) surface to improve interfacial properties of CFRPs. Our design utilizes the unique molecular necklace structure of PPR composed of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and polyetheramine (PEA). Here, hydroxyl-rich β-CD acts as crosslinking sites and catalyst to enhance interfacial crosslinking density and the mobile main chain PEA serves as an internal stress relaxant to dissipate stress, thereby simultaneously improving the stiffness and toughness of the interphase. The resultant CFRPs exhibit excellent interfacial properties with a 90 % rise in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and 156 % enhancement in transverse fiber bundle test (TFBT) strength in comparison with desized HMCF composites. This work provides a new strategy for preparing carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites with excellent interfacial properties.

Abstract:Dynamic secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (DSIMS) was used to investigate the change in the failure mechanism at a heterogeneous polymer-polymer interface (polystyrene (PS)/polyamide (nylon 6, Ny6)) reinforced with in situ graft copolymers produced by the reaction between Ny6 molecules and poly(styrene- co-maleic anhydride) at the interface. The variation in fracture toughness with bonding time and temperature has been explained by two different failure mechanisms: adhesive failure at the interface for short bonding times and when the bonding temperature is low and cohesive failure between chains at the interface and bulk PS for longer bonding times and when the bonding temperature is high. DSIMS results provide the direct experimental evidence that the nonreactive molecules (PS) diffuse away from the high-potential interface, which induces the cohesive failure in the bulk of the nonreactive molecules (PS) after long annealing times. The change in the adhesion strength with temperature could also cause a change in the failure mechanism. Common features of the fracture mechanisms at heterogeneous interfaces reinforced by the in situ graft copolymers are outlined, which are independent of the polymer crystallinity.

Abstract:Amphiphilic copolymers of highly conjugated poly(acetylene)s and poly(ethylene glycol)-functionalized perylene diimide (PEG750-PDI)-incorporated poly(olefin)s have been synthesized via one-pot tandem cyclopolymerization and ring-opening metathesis copolymerization (ROMCP) methodologies. Both di- and tri-block copolymers were prepared as regular-block and random-block copolymers from 1,6-heptadiyne and cycloolefin monomers using ruthenium-based alkylidene initiators. Copolymer composition and the relative atomic weight percentages of both di- and tri-block copolymers were estimated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Photophysical properties of both copolymers have been explained based on both the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic analysis shedding more light on their different stages of organization as well as π-π stacking interactions of PEG750-incorporated perylene cores in aqueous solutions. Furthermore, these investigations elucidate the modulation of photophysical properties and H-type aggregation processes of polymers in aqueous solutions that lead to the formation of PEG750-PDI-derived amphiphiles. Copolymeric surface analysis, segmental patterns and film morphology was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealing globular or spherical morphological features enhanced by various functional groups present in the polymer bulk. In addition, the formation of these spherical morphologies was further visualized in the thin film cross-section of both di-and tri-block polymers by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to justify surface morphologies determined by AFM analysis of both polymers.

Abstract:Most of work on polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSN) focused on the importance of the chemistry used to modify the surface of the clay, usually montmorillonite (MMT) and characterization of the nano-scale structure obtained in the last decade. The role and importance of processing has been paid attention only recently. Our purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the chemistry and shear on the dispersion of clay in polymer matrix via dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM), in which the melt is firstly injected into the mold then forced to move repeatedly in a chamber by two pistons that moved reversibly with the same frequency as the solidification progressively occurs from the mold wall to the molding core part. A special orientation region between the skin region and the core region is produced via imposing the reversible shear effect during the cooling of the melt. The initial MMT and organic modified MMT (abbreviated as OMMT) were directly injection molded with powdered iPP in the DPIM without pre-extrusion. Without shearing, only an intercalated structure was obtained through organic modification and the diameter of OMMT particles has a significant reduction compared to the initial MMT. Under the effect of shear, however, an intercalated morphology in the oriented region and an exfoliated morphology in the core region can be achieved. Our result suggests that both the chemistry and shear are important to determine the dispersion of clay in polymer matrix. PP/clay nanocomposites with excellent impact strength can be prepared via simple one step, direct injection molding without a conventional pre-extrusion, by dynamic packing injection molding. The observed change of impact strength could be related to the local hierarchical structure developed during the processing.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations and micromechanics model analysis are performed to investigate the mechanical behaviours and interfacial effects of interpenetrating phase composites in the nanoscale. It is observed that the overall Young's modulus and ultimate strength of the nanocomposites vary nonlinearly with the cohesive energy of the interface. The cohesive properties affect the stiffness of the interface zone, and in turn, influence the effective Young's modulus of composites. The competition between interfacial failure and weak phase damage results in an optimal cohesive parameter of the interface, at which the composite possesses the maximal ultimate strength. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for the design and optimisation of advanced nanocomposites with superior mechanical properties.
