Abstract:We present a study on the interaction between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and the soluble polymer poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT). Composites of SWNTs embedded in the polymer matrix were fabricated by drop casting of the nanotube/P3OT mixture dissolved in chloroform and have been studied using absorption spectroscopy, electrical characterization methods and high-resolution electron microscopy. The electrical conductivity was measured as a function of the SWNTs content in the solution. As the nanotube concentration increases from 0 to 20wt.%, the conductivity of the resulting films increases by five orders of magnitude. The enhancement in conductivity can be explained by means of simple percolation path theory, resulting in an estimated percolation threshold of 11wt.%.
Low Percolation Thresholds of Electrical Conductivity and Rheology in Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Through the Networks of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Coagulation method was first used to prepare nanocomposites of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The morphology of nanocomposites is characterized using transmission electronic microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy. A coating on MWNT by PET chains is observed by comparison of micrographs of purified MWNT and MWNT encapsulated by PET chains in the nanocomposites, and this coating is considered as evidence of interfacial interaction between MWNT and PET chains. Both electrical conductivity and rheological properties have been well characterized. With increasing MWNT loading, the nanocomposites undergo transition from electrically insulative to conductive at room temperature, while the melts show transition from liquid-like to solid-like viscoelasticity. The percolation threshold of 0.6wt% (based on viscosity) for rheological property and 0.9wt% for electrical conductivity has been found. The low percolation threshold results from homogeneous dispersion of MWNT in PET matrix and high aspect ratio of MWNT. The less rheological percolation threshold than electrical percolation threshold is mainly attributed to the fact that a denser MWNT network is required for electrical conductivity, while a less dense MWNT network sufficiently impedes PET chain mobility related to the rheological percolation threshold.

Abstract:The electrical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) embedded in a poly(3-octylthiophene) matrix have been investigated as a function of SWNT concentration. The electrical conductivity and its temperature dependence were measured as a function of the SWNT concentration. As the nanotube concentration increased from 0 to 20 wt %, the conductivity of the resulting films is dramatically increased by six orders of magnitude. The enhancement in conductivity can be explained by means of a three dimension simple percolation path theory, resulting in an estimated threshold of 4 wt %. The temperature dependence of the SWNT conductivity mat obeys a three-dimensional variable range hopping. In contrast, the polymer-nanotube composite conductivity follows a fluctuation induced tunneling model. The main divergence is that in the polymer-nanotube composite, the nanotubes are coated with polymer, which acts a barrier in bundle to bundle hopping. (C) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Electrical conductivity is studied in two component composites, one of which is insulating polymer (nylon6, nylon66) in fibers coated with conducting polypyrrole and the other, polyethylene in spheres without coating. Conductivity is enhanced by more than 15 orders of magnitude when the concentration of polypyrrole-coated insulating polymer exceeds 2–5 vol%, which corresponds to an effective polypyrrole concentration of 0.01–0.03 vol%. This insulator-metal transition-like characteristic can be explained by a percolation model. Thermoelectric power is proportional to absolute temperature and is independent of the concentration of polypyrrole-coated insulating fibers above the percolation threshold, which support the percolation model. The percolation threshold depends on the shape of the coated fibers of the insulating polymer but does not depend on the type of coated insulating polymer. The percolation threshold increases with decreasing length of polypyrrole-coated insulating fibers.
Significant Ultra-low Percolation Threshold, Enhanced Positive Temperature Coefficient Effect and Dielectric Permittivity in Polymer-based Composites with Immiscible Polymers

Abstract:Significant conductive polymer-based composites consisting of immiscible semi-crystalline polymers PP and PVDF, at different volume ratios loaded with a certain concentration of CB were prepared by blending and sequent hot-pressing technology. The distributing status of CB in the polymers was evaluated through the micrographs of the composite. The percolation threshold of this kind of composite is much lower than those of the individual polymers. Even more, the composite at 1/1 volume ratio of PP and PVDF displays the best conductivity among different ratios at a certain concentration of CB, and it displays an outstanding PTC effect more than five orders of magnitude, and synchronously an enhanced dielectric permittivity about 24.9 at 100 Hz. These inimitable properties may owe to the formation of PP/PVDF co-continuous phases and a double-percolation effect in the composite. The novel polymer-based composite with ultra-low percolation threshold, enhanced PTC effect, as well as the significant dielectric permittivity is promising a potential application.

Abstract:Multiphase immiscible polymer blend systems have shown great potential to reduce the electrical percolation threshold for conductive applications. However, the material generally possesses poor mechanical properties since none of the polymer components can maintain substantially all of their original bulk properties, and also because coarse phase sizes are generally obtained due to the incompatible interfaces. In this work, a new technique to fabricate multiple percolated polymer composites through fibrillation of a completely wet ternary blend system composed of a matrix and two minor phases is reported. After melt compounding, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) formed dispersed droplets fully encapsulated by a conductive poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) layer in the polypropylene (PP) matrix. PET/PEBA nanofibrils with core-sheath structure and a typical diameter of 100–300 nm were then generated through melt spinning of the PP/PEBA/PET blends. The transformation of complex PET/PEBA droplets into high aspect ratio core-sheath nanofibrils significantly reduced the phase percolation threshold, allowing the development of conductive PEBA network structures at low minor phase (both PET and PEBA) contents to preserve the bulk properties of the PP matrix.

Abstract:Ultralow percolation threshold, strong positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, and abnormal alternating current electrical behaviors were obtained in ternary nanocomposites consisting of polypropylene (PP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) (volume ratio: 1∕1) loaded with different amounts of nanosized carbon black (CB). These unusual properties could be assigned mainly to the special formation of electrically double-percolation network, the consecutive volume expansion of (PP-PVDF) cocontinuous phase, and the tunnel conduction between CB clusters. Both the low percolation threshold and the strong PTC effect should make the (CB-PP)/PVDF nanocomposites one of the most promising functional dielectric materials.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Electrical conductivity of polymer composite containing insulating polyrner fiber coated with thin polypyrrole layer has been found to increase remarkably by more than ten orders of magnitude above some threshold concentration. The activation energy of the electrical conductivity also changes drastically above this threshold. Thermoelectric power at concentration above this threshold is nearly the same with that of doped polypyrrole. The threshold concentration has been found to be dependent on the length of fiber remarkably. Longer length of fiber exhibits lower threshold concentration. These results are discussed in terms of percolation theory by taking the shape of fiber in, consideration.

Abstract:The blends prepared by incorporation of carbon black (CB) or graphite powder (GP) into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix have been novel and extensively applied polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PTC) composites. A phenomenological model was proposed on the basis of the GEM equation and the dilution effect of filler volume fraction due to the thermal volume expansion of the polymer matrix. Accordingly, the contribution of the thermal expansion of the matrix to the jump-like PTC transition of the composites was quantitatively estimated and a mechanical explanation was given. It was proved that the contribution of the volume expansion to PTC effect decreased for HDPE/CB composites crosslinked through electron-beam irradiation. Furthermore, the influences of the filler content, temperature and crosslinking on the self-heating behavior as well as the nonlinear conduction characteristics at electrical-thermal equilibrium state were examined. Based on the electric-field and initial resistivity dependence of the self-heating temperature and resistance dependence of the critical field, the mechanisms of the self-heating of the polymeric PTC materials were evaluated. The intrinsic relations between macroscopic electrical properties and microscopic percolation network at electrical-thermal equilibrium state were discussed according to the scaling relationship between the self-heating critical parameter and the conductivity of materials.
Electrical Conduction Near Percolation Threshold in Polymer Composite Containing Conducting Polypyrrole-Coated Insulating Polymer Fiber

Abstract:New types of conductor-insulator composites are prepared, in which conducting polymer-coated insulating polymers (polyethylene in spheres, nylon66 in fibers), whose size and shape are well controlled, are used as the conductor, and noncoated polyethylene spheres are used as the insulator. The dependence of electrical conductivity on the concentration of coated insulating polymers near the percolation threshold is studied in detail. The percolation threshold decreased with increasing length of coated nylon66 fibers. In the composite made of polypyrrole-coated polyethylene spheres and noncoated polyethylene spheres, the critical exponent t is evaluated to be 2.0±0.2. In the composite made of polypyrrole-coated nylon fibers (400 µ m, 800 µ m) and noncoated polyethylene spheres, a larger value t (3.0±0.4) is obtained. The dependence of t on applied voltage is also studied. In the composites made of polypyrrole-coated nylon66 fibers, t increases with increasing applied voltage. This can be explained by taking interparticle tunneling conduction into consideration in the percolation model.
Electrical conductivities of carbon nanotube-filled polycarbonate/polyester blends

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT)-filled polycarbonate (PC)/poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and polycarbonate (PC)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends containing 1 wt% CNTs over a wide range of blend compositions were prepared by melt mixing in a torque rheometer to investigate the structure-electrical conductivity relationship. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the blend morphology and the distribution of CNTs. The latter was compared with the thermodynamic predictions through the calculation of wetting coefficients. It was found that CNTs are selectively localized in the polyester phase and conductive blends can be obtained over the whole composition range (20 wt%, 50 wt% and 80 wt% PBT) for CNT-filled PC/PBT blends, while conductive CNT-filled PC/PET blends can only be obtained when PET is the continuous phase (50 wt%, 80 wt% PET). The dramatic difference in the electrical conductivity between the two types of CNT-filled PC/polyester blends at a low polyester content (20 wt%) was explained by the size difference of the dispersed phases on the basis of the transmission electron microscope micrographs.

Abstract:Conductive network formation and its dynamic process for multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and carboxyl-tethered MWNT (MWNT-COOH) filled poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) systems were investigated. Based on real-time tracing the variation of electrical resistivity of systems with isothermal treatment time, the conductive network formation was evaluated. It was found that the conductive network formation was temperature and time dependent. The percolation time, characterized at a certain annealing time where the electrical resistivity started to decrease drastically, decreased with the increase of the filler concentration or the annealing temperature. However, the values of the percolation time and the activation energy of conductive network formation for the PVDF/MWNT-COOH system were higher than those of the PVDF/MWNT system, indicating that the interaction between MWNTs and PVDF molecules played an important role in the conductive network formation of the composites. Furthermore, a modified thermodynamic percolation model was proposed to predict the percolation time of PVDF/MWNT composites. Abstract:Binary blends of the conjugated polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and the insulating polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) phase-separated and exhibited optical and electrical activity in light-emitting-diodes. The phase-separated PFO columns were uniformly packed and situated directly on a transparent hole-injecting contact. The length scales of lateral topographical features can be adjusted discretionarily by controlling the blend concentration and compositional ratio. The mechanism leading to the formation of lateral structures was investigated by comparing with the vertical segregation in polar conjugated polymer poly (9,9-bis(6-diethoxylphosphorylhexyl)fluorene) (PF-EP) blends with PMMA, which suggested that kinetics rather than interfacial free energy acted. In such lateral phase-separated structures, the phase-separated PFO domains were the optically and electrically active phase. This highlighted the potential opportunity as nanoscale light source for organic optoelectronic device applications with well-controllable properties.

Abstract:A type of hierarchical structured composite composed of a minor thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) phase spreading at the interface of two major phases polyoxymethylene/polyamide copolymer (POM/COPA) and carbon black (CB) particles selectively localized at the TPU/COPA interface of the tri-continuous blends was fabricated by melt compounding. The hierarchical structure was designed according to predictions and verified by a combination of electron microscopy and solvent extraction technique. The hierarchical structured composites show the dramatically decreased percolation threshold, a reduction of 60% compared to those without TPU where CB is selectively distributed in the COPA phase. The effects of CB contents and TPU on the phase morphology of POM/COPA were investigated, showing the occurrence of the POM/COPA phase inversion from a sea-island to a co-continuous structure beyond the percolation threshold of CB in the presence of TPU. The mechanism for the formation of conductive network is construction of CB network at the TPU/COPA interface of tri-continuous POM/COPA/TPU blends and double percolation effect.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polythiophene blends are prepared and their properties such as crystalline structure, thermophysical properties, thermal stability, morphology, and electrochemical properties are studied. An increase in polythiophene concentration significantly raised the lithium ion transfer number. Furthermore, lithium doping in polythiophene led to a narrowed band gap, which facilitated the movement of charge carriers and improved conductivity. In this study, polymer blends of polythiophene (PTH) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) are investigated by focusing on their structural and electrochemical characteristics. These blends displayed immiscibility confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) and interaction assessments. PTH's role as a plasticizer is evident, diminishing crystallinity. A rise in PTH level led to a lower glass transition temperature and a higher melting point, suggesting reduced intermolecular forces and increased polymer chain flexibility. Conversely, a dispersed phase presence elevated the melting point, restricting chain movement and crystallization. The thermal properties of blends are enhanced by increased PTH content. Applying the Vogel–Tammann–Fulcher model to ionic conductivity measurements, it observed a direct relationship between temperature and free volume, impacting conductivity and ion transport numbers. Certain materials exhibit increased activation energies, indicating substantial thermodynamic barriers to local motion. Higher PTH content within the PVDF matrix notably increased the lithium ion transfer number from 0.22 to 0.71, a change tied to the C–S–C structure of polythiophene. However, elevated PTH levels also led to diminished negative charge transfer and ionic conductivity in the PTH‐PVDF blend compared to pure PVDF, likely due to an ionic conduction hindrance.

Abstract:Enhanced dielectric permittivity and conductivity are observed in low-density polyethylene/multiwall carbon nanotubes (LDPE/MWCNT) nanocomposites prepared via a melt-blending process and subsequent a hot-molding procedure when the volume fraction of MWCNT is near the percolation threshold. In comparison to some reported results, the present percolation threshold is high. The high percolation threshold may be attributed to the MWCNT, which are fractured easily during the melt-blending process due to the strong shear rate. For the percolative LDPE/MWCNT nanocomposite, the dielectric permittivity and conductivity at 100 Hz are about 200 and 10(-4) (S m(-1)), respectively. The results are also explained by employing the well-known percolation theory. This LDPE/MWCNT nanocomposite, with high dielectric permittivity and high conductivity, may be considered as a potential shield layer material for use with HVDC insulators.
Closely Packed Conductive Droplets with Polygon-Like Patterns Confined at the Interface in Ternary Polymer Blends

Abstract:This work reports on the formation of closely packed conductive droplets demonstrating polygon-like patterns at the interface in partially wetted ternary polymer systems prepared by melt blending and annealing treatment. The low-density polyethylene/poly(ether-block-amide)/poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (LDPE/PEBA/PBAT) blend showed an intermediate partial wetting tendency where the interfacially localized conductive PEBA phase developed connected structure after blending but transformed into dispersed droplets upon annealing. The coalescence of the PEBA droplets appeared to be initiated by the Rayleigh-type instability in the thin PBAT film separating PEBA. However, the intrinsic coalescence rate of the PEBA droplets was very low due to the low interfacial tension of PEBA/PBAT. This slow coalescence of PEBA combined with the fast reduction in the interfacial area during annealing and the intermediate partial wetting state of the LDPE/PEBA/PBAT system resulted in a unique morphology of closely packed PEBA droplets with polygon-like patterns at a volume fraction of 50/10/40. Two other representative ternary polymer blends, LDPE/PEBA/polypropylene (PP) and compatibilized LDPE/PEBA/polystyrene (PS), with strong and weak partial wetting morphologies were also examined to highlight the mechanism for the morphology development in the LDPE/PEBA/PBAT blend.

Abstract:Temperature and time dependence of conductive network formation in vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), VGCF and ketjenblack (KB) filled HDPE/isotactic polypropylene (iPP) blends have been investigated. It is found that the filled conductive polymer composites are thermodynamically non-equilibrium systems, in which the conductive network formation is temperature and time dependent, a concept named as dynamic percolation is proposed. When the composites are annealed at a temperature above the melt point of polymer matrix, the dynamic process of conductive network formation can be monitored in a real time way. Such an in situ characterization method provides more interesting information about the dispersion of conductive particles in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, a thermodynamic percolation model is modified to predict the percolation time for VGCF and KB filled HDPE/iPP multi-phase systems during the annealing treatment, and it expresses experimental results well.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/polystyrene (PS)/carbon black (CB) and poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)/PS/CB ternary composite films were obtained using solution casting technique to investigate double percolation effect. In both PMMA/PS/CB and PEMA/PS/CB ternary composite films, the CB particles prefer to locate into PS phase based on the results of calculating wetting coefficient, which is also confirmed by SEM images. The conductivity of the films was investigated, and the percolation threshold (φc) of both ternary composite films with different polymer blend ratios was determined by fitting the McLachlan GEM equation. Conductivity of PMMA/PS/CB ternary composite films showed a typical double percolation effect. However, due to the double emulsion structure of PEMA/PS polymer blends, the PEMA/PS/CB ternary composite films (PEMA/PS = 50/50) showed a higher φc, even CB only located in PS phase, which conflicts with the double percolation effect. A schematic diagram combined with SEM images was proposed to explain this phenomenon.

Abstract:The linear viscoelastic behavior and electrical conductivity of high-density polyethylene ( HDPE) filled with stainless steel fibers (SSF) were investigated and compared with those of carbon black (CB) filled HDPE composites system. It is found that CB/HDPE composites show two electrical conductivity percolation values (phi(c1) and phi(c2)) and a wide percolation range. However, SSF/HDPE composites present an extremely low threshold of the electrical conductivity percolation (only 0.3 vol%) and a narrow percolation range. Only one conductivity percolation value (phi(c)) was observed. The speciality of conductivity percolation behavior of SSF/HDPE composites owes to the formation of conducting channels of SSF/HDPE composites. It is well recognized that the rheological percolation threshold is identical to the percolation threshold of electrical conductivity for CB/HDPE composites. Whereas, for SSF/HDPE composites, dynamics storage modulus (G') becomes almost independent of frequency in the low frequency region as the SSF loading increases up to 4.8 vol%, suggesting an onset of solidlike behavior in SSF/HDPE composites. By plotting G' versus SSF loading, the rheological threshold is determined as 4.8 vol%, which is much lower than the percolation threshold of electrical conductivity, i.e. 0.3 vol%. Additionally, the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect was measured for SSF/HDPE and CB/HDPE composites. It reveals that the conductivity channels formed by SSF show a higher stability than those formed by CB particles in HDPE matrix. The difference in the percolation threshold and the stability of conductivity channels are understood in terms of the larger L/D of SSF and the particular conductive mechanism of SSF/HDPE composites
