Abstract:The application of mathematical skills is essential to our daily routine and is foundational for numerous disciplines. Among various computer-supported learning methods, Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) has been perceived as a promising method in teaching mathematics, promoting students' interest, and motivation. Therefore, the aim of this systematic literature review is to provide a detailed synthesis of literature regarding the effectiveness of DGBL applications in K-12 mathematics education and extend the findings of previous reviews. This study reviewed a total of 43 articles published in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) of Web of Science, and other top-ranked educational technology journals between 2008 and 2019. The findings were then evaluated according to the multi-dimensional framework and classified into three main categories: knowledge acquisition, perceptual and cognitive skills, and affective, motivational, and behavioral change. This revealed that most of the reviewed studies have reported positive gains in all categories, with the traditional method of teaching being the most popular comparison approach. Numerous scholars also demonstrated a particular interest in the subject of arithmetic operations. The study also found that a considerable number of DGBL applications were constructed based on a specific design feature or learning theory. Furthermore, this study highlighted a number of research gaps in this domain according to which more research is required to understand how different dynamics (e.g., collaborative/cooperative, competitive) influence students' learning. Additionally, more studies are required to address the lack of research on twenty-first-century skills such as creativity and critical thinking. The findings of this review could benefit researchers and educators who are interested in using educational computer games to teach mathematics.

Abstract:Journal of Educational Computing Research, Ahead of Print. Abundant research has tried to understand how games can be designed and used effectively to improve the learning process and to examine the correlations between digital learning games and student motivation, engagement, and knowledge retention. The current study examined the correlation between learning through digital game-based learning (DGBL) and students' achievements, their sense of involvement, and motivation for learning. Using a quantitative approach, data was drawn from questionnaires and exams in two subjects: literature and language. Participants were 320 male and female students aged 12–14 attending a single middle school participated in the study. The students were randomly divided into three groups, each group was given a unique teaching and learning method. Group 1 studied and practiced using the traditional method (a teacher who teaches in the classroom and worksheets for practice), Group 2 studied with the traditional method but practiced with a digital game and Group 3 learned and practiced using a digital game. The findings showed that the students' attained significantly higher achievements in the group that was taught traditionally but practiced with a digital game. It was also found that when digital learning games are integrated into teaching and learning, the students' motivation and involvement in the class increased.

Abstract:Digital game-based learning (DGBL) had been regarded as a sound learning strategy in raising pupils’ willingness and interest in many disciplines. Normally, video and digital games are used in the teaching and learning mathematics. based on literature, digital games have proven its capability in making pupils motivated and are more likely to contribute to effective learning mathematics. Hence this research aims to construct a DGBL in the teaching of Mathematics for Year 1 pupils. Then, a quasi-experimental study was carried out in a school located in Gua Musang, Kelantan, involving 39 pupils. Specifically, this article tests the effectiveness of the use of DGBL in the teaching of the topic Addition of Less than 100 on pupil’s achievement. This research employed a quasi-experiment, Pre and Post Test of Non-equivalent Control Group design. The data were analysed using the Nonparametric test namely the Mann-Whitney U. The research finding shows the use of the DGBL could increase the pupils’ achievement in the topic of Addition of Less than 100. In practice, this research indicates that the DBGL can utilized as an alternative reference strategy for Mathematics teacher.

Abstract:Digital game-based learning research has received increasing attention in recent years due to advances in technology. A systematic review was conducted to understand the current status and potential of game-based learning (GBL) research in science and mathematics. This study reviewed articles on GBL in science and mathematics education published in the Web of Science (WoS) database from 1991 to 2020. The 146 articles were selected for content and bibliometric analysis. After a systematic analysis of the trends and overviews, we present discussions and insights for the future. The study raised relevant research questions to analyze authors, regions, applied subjects, educational stages, research methods, game types and devices, performance issues, and author keywords. The results revealed that the majority of the published research in this field has been carried out in Taiwan, followed by the United States. GBL is currently applied in mathematics and science to increase learner motivation and engagement and reduce learning anxiety. The results also revealed that higher order thinking skills such as problem solving, group collaboration, and critical thinking, have become an increasingly important focus of research in recent years. The systematic review also found that researchers have been engaged in the field since 1993 and have conducted a large number of studies since 2011. In terms of keywords, game-based learning and interactive learning were the most used keywords in the articles, indicating that they were the most explored topics by researchers, while learning behaviors and competition were relatively new directions to explore. This study analyzed and summarized GBL in science and mathematics education in the hope that it may contribute to future research.
An Exploration of Gendered Differences in Cognitive, Motivational and Emotional Aspects of Game‐based Math Learning

Abstract:BackgroundDigital game-based learning (DGBL) has the potential to provide a gender inclusive learning environment for children.ObjectiveThe present study aimed to explore gendered differences among primary school learners in grades three, four, and five within the context of game-based fraction learning from cognitive, motivational and emotional perspectives.MethodsTwo hundred and sixty-nine participants completed a pre-test and post-test on fraction conceptual knowledge and surveys in math anxiety, intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy. In addition, facial expression detection technology was employed to evaluate emotional states.ResultsIn general, within the DGBL environment, boys and girls exhibited similar performance in both their understanding of fraction concepts and their motivational aspects. However, gender differences were identified and manifested uniquely across different grade levels. Specifically, third-grade girls exhibited significantly lower self-efficacy than boys, but after DGBL intervention, the gender gap in self-efficacy was no longer significant. Additionally, third-grade girls achieved significant improvements in both the competence and interest dimensions of their intrinsic motivation, while boys did not show significant improvements. In the fourth grade, girls exhibited a significantly higher frequency of angry expressions compared to boys during gameplay. Fifth-grade girls' cognitive performance appeared to be less correlated with motivational factors compared to boys.ConclusionsThe results suggest that DGBL may help narrow the gender difference in math learning, with girls potentially benefiting more from DGBL than boys. What is already known about this topicImplications for practice Gendered differences in math learning include historical advantages for boys, diminishing achievement gaps, persistent math anxiety with gender variations, and gender-related disparities in intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, highlighting the need for targeted support for girls, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Fraction knowledge plays a pivotal role in math learning, DGBL emerges as an effective and gender-inclusive tool to enhance conceptual understanding of fractions.What this paper adds The game-based fraction learning could effectively enhance conceptual understanding of fractions for third to fifth-grade students, revealing consistent positive outcomes for both boys and girls across different grade levels, particularly in tasks related to measurement interpretation. The game-based fraction learning significantly improves motivational experiences, particularly enhancing competence, interest, and self-efficacy for third-grade beginner girls, with less pronounced effects observed in fourth and fifth-grade students. Fourth-grade girls displayed a significantly higher proportion of angry faces compared to boys, suggesting potential differences in cognitive load, stress, and emotional engagement in digital game-based learning. After game-based intervention, fifth-grade girls' cognitive outcomes were less influenced by motivational factors, while boys still demonstrated a strong correlation between motivational factors and cognitive scores.Educational practitioners are encouraged to integrate game-based learning into early childhood math education, as demonstrated by this study, which highlights the significant contribution of early exposure to game-based learning in fostering girls' positive attitudes towards mathematics. Game designers should incorporate relevant intelligent technologies for monitoring emotions and different gameplay modes, and when learners experience negative emotions, various strategies should be employed to provide a gender-inclusive and supportive learning environment. For girls facing challenges in mathematics, their underperformance may be associated with lower motivation levels and emotional states, and game developers can address this issue by offering positive reinforcement, personalized feedback, and challenges tailored to individual learning needs to foster competence in learners.

Abstract:Digital game-based learning (DGBL) has emerged as a promising approach to enhancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, drawing widespread attention in fields such as education, healthcare, wellness, and hazard prevention. However, discussions on the application of DGBL in STEM education remain insufficiently explored, with existing research largely focused on language learning and lower-grade subjects. Therefore, this study aims to systematically investigate the impact of DGBL on STEM learning outcomes. Researchers conducted a comprehensive search in the Web of Science database, considering factors such as experimental design, sample size, and comparability of study results. Through literature screening and analysis, 19 relevant studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified. The findings from the included literature reveal that DGBL has a positive impact on STEM learning, encompassing various aspects such as increased learning motivation, improved academic performance, enhanced self-efficacy, and a positive learning experience. As an educational method, DGBL demonstrates significant potential in the STEM field. However, challenges remain, such as the effectiveness of game design, the selection of assessment tools, and the measurement of learning outcomes. Overall, DGBL positively influences STEM learning, and future research should focus on innovative game design, establishing evaluation standards, and more educational practice to further explore the potential of DGBL in STEM learning.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in the early childhood learning process has been growing. Recent research shows that DGBL has the potential to create new forms of childhood learning, it is not yet clear how applications can affect young students' learning. There are also not sufficient studies to analyze the significant features of DGBL in this area in early childhood. Therefore, to better understand the impact on childhood DGBL education, this article reviews the systematic literature. This review analyzes 37 articles in this area. In this paper, PRISMA's principles analysis of studies on the characteristics of DGBL technology has been used. The classification focuses on four areas: the objectives of current studies, the impact of technology use on children's learning, learning theories, and assessment methods in DGBL applications. The results of this study show that the use of DGBL can have an active effect on strengthening thinking skills and learning in childhood. This article examines the evolution of this evolving technology, the challenges, and issues posed by DGBL, and discusses how it can be useful for younger students to learn and do more research. This study provides insight for researchers, game designers, and developers in the field of DGBL.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of Digital Game-Based Language Learning (DGBLL) in promoting greater pupil involvement in language acquisition at the primary school level. Three groups of grade four students were examined in this study: a control group that received conventional teaching strategies, an experimental group that utilized Kahoot and Quizizz, and a second experimental group that played the digital games competitively. The researchers evaluated students' motivation and attitudes towards the use of gamification in language learning via pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires. The experimental groups showed superior performance and increased motivation, with the strongest performance experienced in the second experimental group that added competition to the learning process. The findings suggest that the integration of DGBLL and peer competition with gamified formative assessment tools significantly enhances language learning by introducing a captivating, efficient, and flexible method for language instruction. This study offers useful insights into the possibilities of gamification in language learning and evaluation, emphasizing its importance in modern educational practices.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to review empirical research articles regarding game-based science learning (GBSL) published from 2000 to 2011. Thirty-one articles were identified through the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases. A qualitative content analysis technique was adopted to analyze the research purposes and designs, game design and implementation, theoretical backgrounds and learning foci of these reviewed studies. The theories and models employed by these studies were classified into four theoretical foundations including cognitivism, constructivism, the socio-cultural perspective, and enactivism. The results indicate that cognitivism and constructivism were the major theoretical foundations employed by the GBSL researchers and that the socio-cultural perspective and enactivism are two emerging theoretical paradigms that have started to draw attention from GBSL researchers in recent years. The analysis of the learning foci showed that most of the digital games were utilized to promote scientific knowledge/concept learning, while less than one-third were implemented to facilitate the students’ problem-solving skills. Only a few studies explored the GBSL outcomes from the aspects of scientific processes, affect, engagement, and socio-contextual learning. Suggestions are made to extend the current GBSL research to address the affective and socio-contextual aspects of science learning. The roles of digital games as tutor, tool, and tutee for science education are discussed, while the potentials of digital games to bridge science learning between real and virtual worlds, to promote collaborative problem-solving, to provide affective learning environments, and to facilitate science learning for younger students are also addressed.

Student-centred digital game–based learning: a conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art

Abstract:Student-centred learning forms a major driver behind educational policy and practice in the modern day. With a drive towards embracing the possibilities of technology within the classroom, especially digital video games, it is vital to have an understanding of where such games are delivering and where their potential has yet to be explored. With this in mind, it is important to survey the existing literature to establish the level to which the promise of student-centred learning is being delivered through digital video games. This study presents a conceptual framework based upon a systematic literature review of developments in student-centred digital game–based learning, and seeks to establish the extent to which all tenets of student-centred learning and principles of digital game–based learning are embraced within such applications. A thematic analysis identifies the common themes of game and intervention design while integrating and conceptually linking the key concepts of student-centred learning and digital game–based learning. This leads to the development of a conceptual framework allowing classification of the literature according to common themes. Inclusion criteria include the presence of student-centred learning concepts, with a game-based focus including specifically digital video games. Inclusion was limited to papers published since 2007. The literature analysis identifies a number of themes; these were primarily the types of player engagement: single player, mixed and multiplayer, along with principles of game design and the key tenets of student-centred learning. A preponderance of games and interventions utilising single player experiences and focusing on implementing the active learning tenet of student-centred learning were observed. Areas relating to multiplayer engagements and the social aspects of student-centred learning such as mutual respect receive comparatively less attention in games and research. In order to fully embrace the possibilities offered by student-centred digital game–based learning, it is important not to neglect lessons learned in the development of student-centred learning to its current state. Aspects such as peer-based learning and building relationships between students and teachers have been found important in traditional learning and must be investigated and adapted to new media, including games, as new technologies enter the educational mainstream. Further research into the effects of designing games around these multiplayer aspects, and better defining the role of teachers and educational staff in digital game–based learning, may demonstrate ways to develop and create educational experiences that better engage and prepare students.

Digital Games, Design, and Learning: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:In this meta-analysis, we systematically reviewed research on digital games and learning for K-16 students. We synthesized comparisons of game versus nongame conditions (i.e., media comparisons) and comparisons of augmented games versus standard game designs (i.e., value-added comparisons). We used random-effects meta-regression models with robust variance estimates to summarize overall effects and explore potential moderator effects. Results from media comparisons indicated that digital games significantly enhanced student learning relative to nongame conditions ([Formula: see text] = 0.33, 95% confidence interval [0.19, 0.48], k = 57, n = 209). Results from value-added comparisons indicated significant learning benefits associated with augmented game designs ([Formula: see text] = 0.34, 95% confidence interval [0.17, 0.51], k = 20, n = 40). Moderator analyses demonstrated that effects varied across various game mechanics characteristics, visual and narrative characteristics, and research quality characteristics. Taken together, the results highlight the affordances of games for learning as well as the key role of design beyond medium.

Abstract:As a novel framework in classroom teaching, digital games have gained traction. Anyone can play online games, that eventually ascribe potential for large-scale classroom instruction. Digital games have gained popularity in recent years as a way to encourage programming and computational thinking in pre-college (K-12) classrooms. Since the last decade, an ever-increasing number of learners have been drawn by the rapidly expanding areas of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Regardless of the fact that blending of AI/ML and online/digital gaming is a significant and critical subject for classroom pedagogy, there is indeed a paucity of comprehensive literature review in this domain. The aim of this paper is to take cognizance of recent studies and new findings on games that may be used to enhance AI/ML integrated pedagogy for effective curriculum transaction. Relevant articles and games were identified after a thorough exploration and were then included in this qualitative content analysis. This paper presents an overview of important published studies and games, as well as demonstrate how diverse games offer an exceptional and innovative prospect to educate a wealth of concepts and themes in AI and ML.
Towards a conceptual framework for assessing the effectiveness of digital game-based learning

Abstract:In recent years, interest has grown in the systematic assessment of the effectiveness of digital game-based learning (DGBL). A conceptual framework describing what effectiveness means in the context of DGBL and which are its subcomponents has hitherto been lacking however. Hence, the goal of this paper is to propose a conceptualization and operationalization of effectiveness rooted in social-cognitive theory. In order to identify desired outcomes and be able to operationalize effectiveness, focus groups were organized with three stakeholder groups following a user requirements analysis methodology. Results indicate that three categories of desired outcomes can be distinguished: learning, motivational and efficiency outcomes. For the different outcomes, different subcomponents can be extracted which can be organized hierarchically. Learning outcomes that are seen as relevant to the effectiveness of DGBL are 1) increased interest in the subject matter, 2) improvement in objective performance (e.g., in a test), and 3) transfer, referring to the player's ability to apply acquired knowledge or skills to real-world situations. Relevant motivational outcomes concern 1) enjoyment, the extent to which playing the game evoked an enjoyable experience, and 2) increased motivation to learn using DGBL. Efficiency outcomes relevant to DGBL effectiveness, finally, are related to 1) time management and 2) cost-effectiveness. Overall, it can be stated that a DGBL intervention is effective when it achieves similar or higher scores compared to other instructional methods in relation to any of the above mentioned outcomes without significantly (in the common, not the statistical sense) diminishing any of the others.

For the game in our study, a formative stealth assessment tool, in the form of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is guided by evidence-centered assessment design (ECD). Cognitive Load Theory and ECD are utilized as diagnostic tools to analyze upsurges in hints delivered by the ITS and inform game design revisions that will promote improved learner support and learning outcomes.
The Teacher-Centered Perspective on Digital Game-Based Learning

Abstract:Teachers play a key role in implementing digital game-based learning (DGBL) in educational institutions. Their individual acceptance of the method is a critical factor for the successful distribution of DGBL applications in teaching. Previous work has identified various aspects in the promotion of teachers’ acceptance of DGBL, such as context factors (e.g., skills training, availability of technical support) and software requirements (e.g., ease of use, user experience). These supportive factors and requirements should guide the development of applications and structure the implementation process to ensure a high acceptance rate of the resulting teaching concept. In order to do so, it is essential to evaluate DGBL systematically through a teacher-centered and iterative development process. So far, not much research has been done from this angle, since most evaluations tend to emphasize student perspectives. However, shifting the focus to teachers and DGBL teaching approaches may help to overcome common acceptance problems and promote DGBL in the educational environment. For this reason, this chapter aims to provide an overview of quantitative and qualitative methods from diverse disciplines for the teacher-centered evaluation of DGBL approaches. Additionally, we present case reports from two exemplary projects in secondary and higher education. We conclude with recommendations on DGBL evaluation to facilitate the development of highly acceptable applications and to support the broad and sustainable implementation of DGBL in classrooms.

Abstract:Contributions: This article presents a large-scale study which investigates students’ reaction to game-based learning as part of programming courses. The study focuses on knowledge acquisition, learner experience, and game usability. Background: Despite the rapid growth of the information and communication technologies (ICTs) sector, the lack of engagement with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects and high dropout rates in computer science and engineering majors is linked directly to the large number of unfilled vacancies in the ICT employment market. To tackle one of the underlying causes for this crisis, (i.e., traditional teaching paradigms struggle to attract students to rather abstract and difficult STEM subjects such as programming), innovative technology-enhanced learning solutions are sought. Intended Outcomes: A set of serious games were proposed and designed to promote students’ understanding of programming concepts, improve their confidence, stimulate their interest in STEM and increase engagement with the courses through vivid and appealing scenarios. Application Design: Targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students, the games focused on several key programming topics. They were designed to visualize the programming concepts in illustrative and entertaining scenarios. A comprehensive assessment methodology which includes surveys, observations, and interviews was employed to investigate the impact of the games. Findings: The results show that by using the games in the teaching and learning process all the students have benefited, although differently based on their location, educational backgrounds, and game played. The impact of detailed demographic aspects, such as participants’ use of technology, their initial attitude toward school, and learning STEM on the results needs further study.

Abstract:Games-based Learning (GBL) has developed a reputation with educationalists it is perceived as a potentially engaging form of supplementary learning that could enhance the educational process and has been used at all levels of education including primary, secondary and tertiary education. Despite this recognition and utilisation there is still a lack of empirical evidence supporting GBL as an approach. This paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review performed from 2000 to 2013 specifically looking at quality empirical studies associated with the application of GBL in Primary Education (PE) categorising studies into: behavioural change, affective and motivational outcomes, perceptual and cognitive skills and knowledge acquisition and content understanding. This paper presents a synthesis of these high quality studies associated with GBL. The studies showed that GBL have been used to teach a variety of subjects to children and young people in PE with mathematics, science, language and social studies being the most popular. However, the analysis shows that more Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) studies should be performed comparing GBL to traditional teaching approaches to ascertain if GBL is a useful, viable teaching approach at PE level; there is a distinct lack of longitudinal studies and further longitudinal studies are required; further studies are required looking at whether there are pedagogical benefits of using 2D or 3D games at PE level to assess if 3D immersive games are indeed necessary; further studies are also required to perform comparisons between single and collaborative play and to identify the pedagogical benefits.

Abstract:The study presents the results of a project in which a series of digital games were used for teaching Mathematics to first, fourth, and sixth-grade primary school students (ages 6–7, 8–9, and 11–12). Mathematics was selected as the teaching subject because of the difficulties students face in understanding basic math concepts. Although digital games are used quite extensively for educational purposes, they are scarcely used for teaching Mathematics. The games were developed by the classes' teachers using Microsoft's Kodu Game Lab. The learning outcomes were compared to two other groups of students. The first was taught using the model proposed by Driver and Oldham while the second was taught conventionally. Data was collected using questionnaires and evaluation sheets. A total of 201 students participated in the study coming from three schools in Athens, Greece. Results indicated that students in the games group outperformed, in most cases, students in the other groups. Students' views for the games were highly positive. The implications for software engineers and education administrators are also discussed.

Abstract:Although educational games have been used for a considerable time, their true potential for enhancing achievement and motivation is still being explored. We argue in this paper that we may get closer to realizing this potential if the theoretical underpinning of educational games is improved. We developed a simple interactive math game based on insights from cognitive load and game design theory, in which players solve mathematical problems competitively and creatively. To investigate the effects of the game on achievement and motivation, we ran an experiment with fifth- and sixth-grade students. Our results show that students who played the game achieved better math results than those who did not. We did not find any significant differences in math motivation. Another promising finding, albeit beyond the scope of our hypotheses, relates to the potential effects of math games on student behavior.

Abstract:Background: In recent years, the integration of technology in education has revolutionized traditional learning paradigms. Digital literacy, a crucial skill in the 21st century, has become a vital aspect of modern education, enabling students to navigate, critically assess, and effectively use digital tools. As educators strive to boost engagement and learning outcomes, gamification has appeared as an auspicious pedagogical approach. By applying game mechanics to nongame contexts, gamification seeks to create a more immersive and digital learning experience. Objective: This research paper aims to investigate the impact and acceptance of gamification by learners in a digital literacy course at the undergraduate level. Methods: In a pre-post intervention study, 168 undergraduate students were randomly assigned either to the experimental group (gamification based) or control group (conventional) learning condition. Both groups of participants learned the same topics in digital literacy. Results: Empirical findings showed that participants from the experimental group had better academic performance in digital literacy than those who were not exposed to the game-based learning environment. The participants' prior experience with gamification was not found to be a significant predictor of their acceptance of gamification in a digital literacy course. Conclusions: The study provides evidence supporting the potential benefits of gamification in enhancing digital literacy education and opens the door for further exploration and implementation of gamified learning approaches in higher education settings.
