Abstract:A stabilized diesel-methanol blend was realized and a study on the performance and emissions of the diesel-methanol blend was carried out in a compression ignition engine. The study showed that the engine thermal efficiency increases and the diesel equivalent b.s.f.c. decreases with increase in the oxygen mass fraction (or methanol mass fraction) of the diesel-methanol blends due to an increased fraction of premixed combustion phase, oxygen enrichment and improvement in the diffusive combustion phase. Further increase in the fuel delivery advance angle will achieve a better engine thermal efficiency when the diesel engine is operated using the diesel-methanol fuel blends. A marked reduction in the exhaust CO and smoke can be achieved when operating with the diesel-methanol blend. There is not a large variation in the exhaust hydrocarbon with the addition of methanol in diesel fuel. NOx increases with increase in the mass of methanol added; methanol addition to diesel fuel was found to have a strong influence on the NOx concentration at high engine loads rather than at low engine loads, and a flat NOx-smoke trade-off curve exists when operating with the diesel-methanol fuel blends.
A Comprehensive Study on the Effect of Dimethyl Carbonate Oxygenate and EGR on Emission Reduction, Combustion Analysis, and Performance Enhancement of a CRDI Diesel Engine Using a Blend of Diesel and Prosopis juliflora Biodiesel

Abstract:This paper examines the combined effects of ignition improvers (DMC) and EGR on the CRDI small single-cylinder diesel engine's performance, combustion, and emissions. In this experimentation, 20% (B20) optimal mix of Prosopis juliflora oil biodiesel (PJOB) and 5 ml dimethyl carbonate (DMC) additive was used as test fuel. The fuel handling CRDI system factors such as injection pressure set at 600 bar and injection timing set to 21 (bTDC) with a compression ratio of 16 were considered for the study. For the EGR trial, 20% of the exhaust gas was recirculated under various BMEP circumstances. The test was performed with and without EGR and DMC additive conditions like (i) diesel @ 0% EGR, (ii) diesel + 5 ml DMC @ 20% EGR, (iii) B20 @ 0% EGR, and (iv) B20 + 5 ml DMC @ 20% EGR at the engine power output. The amalgamation of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) additives and EGR reduces NOx and smoke while increasing CO and HC emissions. In addition, the DMC additive and EGR improve thermal efficiency slightly. The overall clubbing of DMC additive and EGR rate indicates better performance for the selected factors than a CRDI engine with a six-hole conventional mechanical fuel injection system. The outcome of the work clearly demonstrates that both the 5 ml DMC additive and the 20% EGR rate of the B20 blend show optimum values of BTE, BSFC, and EGT of 32.93%, 0.27 kg/kw·hr, and 310.89°C, which is closer to diesel. Factors of combustion like cylinder peak pressure (CPP) and heat release rate (HRR) are 70.93 bar and 58.13 J/deg. The tailpipe exhaust of NOx and smoke is 1681 ppm and 31.30 (% vol), which is less than diesel. The HC and CO levels are 93 ppm and 0.38 (% vol), respectively, which are significantly higher than diesel fuel.

The Influence of Diesel–Ethanol Fuel Blends on Performance Parameters and Exhaust Emissions: Experimental Investigation and Multi-Objective Optimization of a Diesel Engine

Abstract:Compression combustion engines are a source of air pollutants such as HC and Co, but are still widely used throughout the world. The use of renewable fuels such as ethanol, which is a low-carbon fuel, can reduce the emission of these harmful gases from the engine. A fundamental analysis is proposed in this research to experimentally examine the emission characteristics of diesel–ethanol fuel blends. Furthermore, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (e-MOGA) was developed based on the experimental data obtained to fine the most effective or Pareto set of engine emission and performance optimization solutions. So, the optimization problem had two inputs and seven objectives. For this purpose, input variables for the search space were S (rpm) varied in the range of (1600–2000) and E (%) varied in the range of (0–12). These design variables were chosen to be varied in a prespecified range with a lower and upper band as same as experimental conditions. A diesel engine using (DE2, DE4, DE6, DE8, DE10, and DE12) diesel–ethanol fuel blends, at the various speed of 1600 to 2000 rpm, was utilized for the experiment. The findings showed that the use of diesel–ethanol fuel blends decreased the concentration of CO and HC emissions by 3.2–30.6% and 7.01–16.25%, respectively, due to the high oxygen content of ethanol. As opposed to CO and HC emissions, the NOx concentration showed an increase of 7.5–19.6%. This increase was attributed to the high combustion quality in the combustion chamber, which resulted in a higher combustion chamber temperature. The optimization results confirmed that the shape of the Pareto front obtained from multi-objective ε-Pareto optimization could be convex, concave, or a combination of both. A new parameter was introduced as emission index or EI for selection of the best solution among the Pareto set of solutions. This parameter had a minimum value of 4.61. The variables levels for this optimum solution were as follows: engine speed = 1977 rpm, ethanol blend ratio = 10%, CO = 0.27%, CO2 = 6.81%, HC = 3 ppm, NOx = 1573 ppm, SFC = 239 g/kW·h, P = 56 kW, and T = 269.9 N·m. The EI index had a maximum value of 8.26. Conclusively, we can say that the optimization algorithm was successful in minimizing emission index for all ethanol blend ratios, especially at higher engine speeds.

Abstract:This study examines the effects of methanol–diesel blends on the emissions of a diesel engine, concentrating on carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HCs), and particulate matter (PM). Using a single-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine at varying torque settings (2 N m–6 N m), significant reductions in CO, CO 2 , HC, and PM emissions were observed with increasing methanol content. CO emissions reduced by up to 81.8%, CO 2 by up to 64.2%, HC by up to 80.4%, and PM by up to 23.5% with the MD11 blend. NOx emissions initially increased but decreased by up to 20% at higher torques with the same blend. These results highlight the environmental benefits of methanol–diesel blends and the need for effective NOx reduction strategies.

Abstract:Previous studies on reactivity controlled compression ignition combustion indicated that, reducing the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions at low load conditions still remains a challenge because of lower in-cylinder temperatures due to lower global reactivity gradient and reduced oxidation process. Research in this direction has not been reported so far and with this motivation, an attempt has been made to increase the global reactivity gradient and oxidation of fuel–air mixture by converting the low reactivity fuel methanol into medium reactivity fuel. This is achieved by mixing high octane oxygenated fuel, methanol (Octane Number: 110), with an oxygenated better cetane and volatility fuels like polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (Cetane Number: 78) and isobutanol (Cetane Number: 15). The medium reactivity fuel with multiple direct injection of diesel fuel timed the combustion of dual fuel–air mixture to avoid too late or too advanced combustion which are the prime factors in controlling the unburnt emissions in a low temperature combustion process. Four medium reactivity fuel samples, M80IB20, M60IB40, M90P10, and M80P20, on percentage volume basis have been prepared and tested on the modified on-road three-cylinder turbocharged common rail direct injection diesel engine to demonstrate higher indicated thermal efficiency and potential reduction in unburnt and oxides of nitrogen/particulate matter emissions from reactivity controlled compression ignition combustion. Experimental results show that, use of medium reactivity fuel with optimized diesel injection strategy resulted in 66% decrease in hydrocarbon emission and 74% decrease in carbon monoxide emission by enhancing the oxidation of fuel–air mixture at lower temperatures which is evidently noticed in the combustion characteristics. Further reduction in hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emission of about 90% has been achieved by integrating the diesel oxidation catalyst with the engine.

Evidence for circulating complexes containing IgE in patients with atopic dermatitis.

Abstract:18 out of 34 patients with atopic dermatitis were shown to have 5-32% of their serum IgE present in a high molecular weight (HMW) form (470,000 daltons). There was no simple correlation between the amount of HMW and the total serum IgE. The HMW peak was not affected by freezing and thawing the serum, but the complexes could be split by lowering the pH of serum fractionation. Some patients were tested sequentially on different occasions and although their clinical status may have altered during this time, there was no marked alteration of the HMW fraction. Results are compared with patients with raised IgE due to parasitic infections. Anti-IgE antibodies have been demonstrated in the HMW fraction.

Abstract:This research examines the potential of a synthetic e-diesel and oxymethylene dimethyl ether blend in a heavy-duty single-cylinder engine. The main purpose is to find the optimal engine settings that maximize engine efficiency and minimize emissions. As the first step, a methodology was developed and applied to simplify the engine's map into five characteristic points to be representative of the World Harmonized Transient Cycle, assigning weights to each load region. This simplification reported low error estimations for fuel consumption and NOx emissions over the cycle. After obtaining the five points, a drop-in analysis was assessed, where the fuel was evaluated with the same settings as diesel, revealing more advanced and shorter combustion with great reductions in soot emissions. Then, a group of three air management and three injection parameters was selected for optimization. A novel methodology combining Taguchi Design and Response Surface Methodology is developed and applied to find the best engine settings. By integrating these two methods, the research reduced the number of required experiments if only one method were used and maintained the goal of achieving higher thermal efficiencies with the new fuel blend compared to the diesel baseline. Significant statistical results were obtained in the Taguchi design, revealing the air management factors that most affected the responses; meanwhile, second-order models with high accuracy helped in finding the best injection parameters. Subsequently, the best settings were experimentally evaluated, and optimal conditions determined by the two methods were validated, confirming the effectiveness of the methodology. Optimization results revealed an improvement of around 2% higher efficiencies for the five tested points while achieving important average reductions of 28% less in NOx with additional decreases in CO, HC, and soot levels, all outperforming traditional diesel benchmarks. Finally, a well-to-wheel analysis using the simplified cycle confirmed a substantial reduction in carbon impact when replacing diesel with this alternative fuel. The successful application of this methodology to recalibrate an engine with an alternative fuel blend shows the potential of using these fuels in existing engines and offers a novel methodology that can be escalated and applied under the engine calibration context.

Investigation on Emission Characteristics of A Compression Ignition Engine with Oxygenated Fuels and Exhaust Gas Recirculation

Abstract:Investigations of emission characteristics were carried out on a compression ignition, dimethyl ether engine (DME) with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and on a diesel engine with a dimethyl carbonate (DMC) additive. The experimental results show that the DME engine with EGR can simultaneously reduce smoke and NO x emissions. The NO x can be reduced by about 20 per cent for every 10 per cent of EGR introduction, while smoke remains at zero. The diesel equivalent brake specific fuel consumption (b.s.f.c.) shows a slight decrease when DMC is added, while the effective thermal efficiency shows a slight improvement. It is found that the smoke reduction rate and smoke show a linear relationship with DMC percentage or oxygen mass percentage in the diesel fuel. For the specific brake mean effective pressure (b.m.e.p.), smoke will be reduced by 20 per cent for every 10 per cent DMC added and by 40 per cent when the oxygen mass percentage in the fuel reaches 10 per cent. The CO decreases when DMC is added, while NO x shows an increase. This difference is pronounced at a high b.m.e.p. For the specific b.m.e.p., CO and NO x show a linear relationship with DMC mass percentage in the fuel; CO will be reduced by 20 per cent while NO x will be increased by 20 per cent for every 10 per cent DMC added.
A comprehensive study on the performance and emission analysis in diesel engine via optimization of novel ternary fuel blends: Diesel, manganese, and diethyl ether

Abstract:Ecosystem degradation and fossil fuel depletion are the two foremost concerns to look for alternative fuels. Rapid population growth is primarily accountable for higher consumption of fossil fuel sources, although engine technology is achieving milestones in terms of fuel efficiency and lower exhaust emissions in order to contribute towards a sustainable environment. The main root cause of global warming is carbon dioxide emissions; therefore, it is imperative to assess the impact of alternative fuels in diesel engines with an aim to minimize carbon emissions. A current study deals with the reduction of carbon emissions and improvement of efficiency through addition of manganese nano-additive to di-ethyl ether and diesel fuel blend in particulate form. Fuel blends were formed by adding various proportions of manganese to high-speed diesel fuel and stirring the mixture while heating it for 10 min. The blends were then tested in diesel engines at two distinct loads and five engine speed ranges. Emission analyzer was used to ascertain the CO2 output of engine. At higher loads for 10 % diethyl ether in diesel, the increase in brake thermal efficiency was 24.19, 28.17 and 26.86 % when the manganese amount in blend was changed as 250 mg, 375 mg and 500 mg respectively. On the other side CO2 emissions increase by 11.57, 30.52 and 20.33 % for manganese concentrations of 250 mg, 375 mg and 500 mg respectively. Analysis performed with Design Expert 13 showed that the desirability was 0.796 for a blend of 375 mg manganese at 1300 rpm and 4500 W load with 33.0611 % BTE, 334.011kg/kWh BSFC, 67.8821Nm torque, and 6.072 % CO2. Therefore, it can be deduced that manganese nanoparticle blends improved engine performance but CO2 emissions also increase which can be responsible for global warming and it should be reduced through catalytic converters.

Abstract:International Journal of Engine Research, Ahead of Print. The use of CO2-neutral synthetic fuels in internal combustion engines contributes to achieving climate targets. Since their combustion is still associated with pollutant emissions, current research is focusing on minimizing harmful emissions, as well as on improving the efficiency of the combustion. The soot-free combustion of the synthetic diesel fuel oxymethylene ether (OME) opens up new scopes for reducing the remaining pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOX). Catalytic aftertreatment of NOX is costly and may lead to the generation of further emissions such as nitrous oxide, making it necessary to further investigate engine-internal approaches of NOX reduction. This work shows the influence of various in-engine measures on emissions and efficiency for OME and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as paraffinic diesel fuel, performed on a 1.75 l single-cylinder research engine. An injector variation was carried out for OME to compensate for the reduced lower heating value by a higher nozzle flow rate, which increases efficiency, but also NOX emissions. The examination of the measures of increasing exhaust gas recirculation, lowering rail pressure, Miller valve timing and high compression ratio shows a significant reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions in each case. At the same time, there is an improvement in indicated efficiency for Miller valve timing and high compression ratio, and with OME, in contrast to HVO, also by reducing the rail pressure. With HVO, each measure increases particulate number by up to several orders of magnitude. For OME, none of the measures resulted in a deterioration of the low particulate emissions, which allows an intensified application and combination of the measures. For example, the simultaneous application of higher compression, early intake closing and decreased injection pressure reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by more than two-thirds and improves efficiency by 5% without increasing particulate emissions.

Abstract:Bioenergy and exploitation from waste offer an appealing alternate method for minimizing the severity of environmental risks while compensating for fossil fuel needs. In detail, this research examined the process of transesterifying waste seed oil obtained from the Kabra plant to fuel a common rail direct injection diesel engine. The oxygenated additive dimethyl carbonate was used as an ignition enhancer. The experiments were performed by blending dimethyl carbonate (up to 20%) in the biodiesel blend to analyze the engine outcome parameters in standard operational procedures. The experiment results revealed that the maximum cylinder pressure in pure biodiesel was 1.73% greater than diesel. More dimethyl carbonate in the biodiesel blend produced a 20.54% higher heat release rate than diesel. The brake thermal brake efficiency improved by 17.75% in dimethyl carbonate 20% blend than pure biodiesel at a higher load. The higher proportion of dimethyl carbonate blend increased 4.2% oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. It decreased 31.5% smoke opacity, 36.36% hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, and 35.6% carbon monoxide (CO) emissions than diesel at maximum load. This research concluded that the smoke opacity, CO emissions, and HC emissions persisted lower for all the test fuels than baseline diesel fuel, with a slight rise in NOx emissions. Further, the TOPSIS optimization technique found that the dimethyl carbonate 20% blend is suitable for diesel engine operation. Hence, the fuel generated from Kabra biodiesel was a feasible diesel substitute in this investigation.

Abstract:This study investigates the performance and emissions of a compression ignition engine fueled with blends of ethanol and petroleum diesel with 2-EHN (2 ethylhexyl nitrate) as a cetane improver. Three blends, named E20 (20% ethanol with 80% diesel), E20A (20% ethanol, 0.1% 2-EHN, and 79.9% petroleum diesel), E20B (20% ethanol, 0.2% 2-EHN, and 79.8% petroleum diesel), and petroleum diesel were analyzed for their brake thermal efficiency (BTHE), specific fuel consumption, net heat release rate, indicated thermal efficiency, and emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), CO2, hydrocarbon (HC), and NOx. The experiments were conducted at variable loading conditions and at compression ratio of 16.5. Results showed that at no load conditions, petroleum diesel exhibited higher indicated power (IP) compared to E20, E20A, and E20B. However, at full load conditions, blend E20B showed higher IP compared to petroleum diesel, E20, and E20A. The blend E20B at a compression ratio of 16.5 showed the highest BTHE of 27%, compared to petroleum diesel (25%) under full load conditions, making it a better performing fuel. However, at higher loads and compression ratio of 16.5, the blends E20A and E20B exhibited emissions of CO, HC, CO2, and NOx that were significantly higher than diesel and E20 at all load conditions. Specifically, at full load conditions and compression ratio of 16.5, the emissions for each fuel were as follows: CO emission for E20, E20A, and E20B was around 0.01%, much less than petroleum diesel (0.1%); HC emission for E20 (15 ppm), E20A (17 ppm), E20B (10 ppm) was much higher than petroleum diesel (2.5 ppm); CO2 emission for E20, E20A, and E20B was about 13% less than petroleum diesel (15%); and NOx emission for E20, E20A, and E20B was around 150 ppm, comparable with petroleum diesel (140 ppm). These results imply that further improvements are required in using ethanol blended alternate fuel in diesel engines with 2-EHN (cetane improver) to reduce emissions with improved performance.

Impact of engine control variables on low load combustion efficiency and exhaust emissions of a methane-diesel dual fuel engine

Abstract:A conventional diesel engine when operated in the reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion strategy faces challenges of high total hydrocarbon (THC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions leading to poor combustion efficiency at low engine loads. The oxides of nitrogen (NO x ) versus smoke trade-off, encountered in conventional diesel combustion, is replaced by the NO x -THC trade-off in the RCCI operation. This work focuses on addressing the NO x -THC trade-off issue by systematically investigating the effects of engine control variables, such as, fuel injection timing, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and intake throttling, on a light duty compression ignition engine running in a methane-diesel dual fuel mode. The engine is operated at a load of 3 bar gross indicated mean effective pressure and at a speed of 1500 rev/min. Based on relationships identified between engine control variables, combustion parameters, emissions and engine performance, a bottom-up approach is used to combine the control variables synergistically to improve the NO x -THC trade-off. A combination of advanced start of injection timing of diesel (−35 degree crank angle (°CA) after top dead centre), 50% premix ratio and 55% EGR levels along with the end of port fuel injection of methane in the middle of the intake stroke (−270°CA), has resulted in a ∼34 percentage points (from 56% to 90%) improvement in combustion efficiency and a ∼9.5 percentage points improvement in thermal efficiency compared to the baseline low load dual fuel operation while maintaining good combustion stability. THC emission is reduced from 105 to ∼25 g/kWh whilst maintaining low levels of NO x (<0.3 g/kWh).

Abstract:Biofuels are regarded as the best diesel fuel substitute due to their low sulfur concentration, reduced aromatic hydrocarbon content, renewable nature, and higher oxygen content. In this research article, the impact of producer gas, Calophyllum inophyllum oil, diesel, and a blend of C. inophyllum-producer gas fuel on a variable compression ratio (VCR) compression ignition (CI) engine, and the performance and emission parameters are evaluated. Several test runs are undertaken at a constant speed of 1500 rpm to predict the performance and emission characteristics of the test engine by changing input parameters such as engine load, CR, and fuel mode of operation. The brake thermal efficiency, BTE, is considered the performance characteristic, and CO, HC, NO X , and opacity are considered the emission characteristics for the present study. The biofuel, or producer gas, employed in this study is prepared from waste biomasses, such as leaves, small tree branches, vegetable waste, and cow dung, aiding waste management for a sustainable environment. In addition, a coupled Taguchi-Grey relational analysis technique is used to predict the best possible combination of control factors for optimizing the overall output responses. 12 kg load, a CR of 18, and diesel fuel are found to be the optimum input parameters of an engine toward optimum performance. A confirmation test is performed at the end to validate the outcome of the experiment. An enhancement in performance of 22.75% is observed with the considered Grey relational grade model.

Abstract:A kind of oxygenate fuel, DME, has been proposed and tested for use with diesel fuel as a means of reducing exhaust emissions. The addition of DME to diesel fuel results in the decrease of the lower calorific value, aromatics fraction and kinematic viscosity of blend fuels. Simultaneously, cetane number, C/H ratio and oxygen content of the blends are enhanced, which has some favorable effects on the combustion and emission of the blends with 10%, 20% and 30% DME by mass. The study on the performance and emissions of the diesel/DME blend is conducted in a DI engine. The emission characteristics of four fuels are determined in a diesel engine. At high loads, the blends reduce smoke significantly with a little penalty on CO and HC emissions compared to diesel fuel. NOx and CO2 emissions of the blends are decreased somewhat. At low loads, the blends have slight effects on smoke reduction due to overall leaner mixture. The results indicate the potential of diesel reformation for clean combustion in diesel engines.

Abstract:The various researches on biodiesel and its blends as a fuel in a CI engine resulted in higher NOx emissions compared to diesel operation. The main objective of this study is to overcome the negative aspect of significant NOx emission than HC and CO emissions in the biodiesel blended fuel by the addition of water. The water emulsion has been used in diesel engine combustion for a long time showed encouraging results, but the point of efficiency and NOx trade-off, which is a highly challenging task for diesel engines. The objective of this study was achieved through the new blend consists of diesel- biodiesel blend (80:20 by volume), water (5% by volume), span-80 surfactant (1% by volume) and Cetane enhancing additive of Di-tertiary butyl peroxide (0.5% by volume). The chosen blend was tried in this study is unexplored. The new blend is designated as B3. Neem oil biodiesel was prepared through transesterification process. This study is to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder diesel engine running on B3 fuel. The results of B3 fuel were compared with diesel (D), diesel-biodiesel blend (B1) and diesel-biodiesel with water emulsion through surfactant (B2). The conclusion reveals that B3 fuel has shown better performance intern of 17% decrease in specific energy consumption and reduction in HC and CO emissions especially NOx emission was reduced up to 29% and 45% than diesel fuel and B1 fuel respectively.

Abstract:The rapid depletion of crude oil and environmental degradation necessitate the search for alternative fuel sources for internal combustion engines. Biodiesel is a promising alternative fuel for compression ignition (CI) engines due to its heat content and combustion properties. Biodiesel blends are used in various vehicles and equipment, such as cars, trucks, buses, off-road vehicles, and oil furnaces. Biodiesel can reduce emissions from CI engines by up to 75% and improve engine durability due to its high lubricity. However, biodiesel has some drawbacks, including a performance reduction and increased nitrogen oxide emissions. Therefore, this study aims to investigate using environmentally available biodiesel in a low-heat rejection engine and an antioxidant additive to enhance the performance and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. India currently has several biodiesel sources, including mango seed oil, mahua oil, and pongamia oil, which can be effectively utilized in CI engines by adding l-ascorbic acid. The experimental work involves a single-cylinder 4-stroke water-cooled direct injection CI engine with a power output of 5.2 kW. The engine's cylinder head, piston head, and valves are coated with lanthanum oxide using the plasma spray coating technique, with a thickness of 0.5 mm. The coated and uncoated engines are tested with different proportions of mahua oil, mango seed oil, and pongamia oil. The results show that the engine's performance is significantly improved compared to the baseline engine at all loads. Additionally, these biodiesels exhibit a notable reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions when combined with l-ascorbic acid.

Abstract:Diesel engines are employed as the major propulsion power source because of their simple, rigid structure and high-fuel economy. It is expected that diesel engines will be widely used in the foreseeable future. However, the increase in usage of diesel engines causes the shortage of fossil fuel and a greater degree of bad pollution. To regulate the above, identifying an alternate fuel to the diesel engine with less pollution is essential. In this research work, emulsified fuels were prepared with different ratios based on the diesel-ethanol blending. The experiment was conducted in a single cylinder diesel engine. Emulsified diesel fuels of 10, 20, 30 and 40 ethanol/diesel ratios by volume were used in the engine, which was run at constant speed of 1500 rpm. The result shows a marginal increase in brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature, specific fuel consumption and also reduction of smoke density. The oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter seem to increase slightly, when compared to the neat fuel.

Abstract:International Journal of Engine Research, Ahead of Print. The study investigates the performance and emission characteristics of a four-stroke, single-cylinder, and direct injection diesel engine with variable compression ratio using nanoparticles blended biofuel. The cerium Oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles have been blended in corresponding ratios with waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel. Further, response surface methodology (RSM) based Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach was used to evaluate engine performance parameters such as brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and emission characteristics (such as NOx, CO, and CO2 emission). In addition, the quadratic models were obtained to investigate the influence of input parameters on each output response with analysis of variance (ANOVA). The desirability approach was used to obtain the optimal engine performance and emission characteristics. The analysis revealed that WCO blended with CeO2 nanoparticles fuel improves CI engines' performance and reduces their hazardous emissions. The compression ratio of 14:1 at 10.29% blend composition and 50 ppm concentration level of nanoparticles with composite desirability of 0.858 was found to be the engine's optimal operating conditions. At optimal conditions, BTE, BSFC, NOx, CO, and CO2 were 36.62%, 0.2204 kg/kW-h, 168 ppm, 0.0192%, and 1.132% respectively.

Abstract:The present study intends to explore the effect of the addition of fuel additives with camphor oil (CMO) on the characteristics of a twin-cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine. The lower viscosity and boiling point of CMO when compared to diesel could improve the fuel atomization, evaporation, and air/fuel mixing process. However, the lower cetane index of CMO limits its use as a drop in fuel for diesel in CI engine. In general, NOX emission increases for less viscous and low cetane (LVLC) fuels due to pronounced premixed combustion phase. To improve the ignition characteristics and decrease NOX emissions, fuel additives such as diglyme (DGE)—a cetane enhancer, cumene (CU)—an antioxidant, and eugenol (EU) and acetone (A)—bio-additives, are added 10% by volume with CMO. The engine used for the experimentation is a twin-cylinder tractor engine that runs at a constant speed of 1500 rpm. The engine was operated with diesel initially to attain warm-up condition, which facilitates the operation of neat CMO. At full load condition, brake thermal efficiency (BTE) for CMO is higher (29.6%) than that of diesel (28.1%), while NOX emission is increased by 9.4%. With DGE10 (10% DGE + 90% CMO), the ignition characteristics of CMO are improved and BTE is increased to 31.7% at full load condition. With EU10 (10% EU + 90% CMO) and A10 (10% A + 90% CMO), NOX emission is decreased by 24.6 and 17.8% when compared to diesel, while BTE is comparable to diesel. While HC and CO emission decreased for DGE10 and CU10, they increased for EU10 and A10 when compared to baseline diesel and CMO.
