Abstract:Objective: To determine the place of imaging and the performance of different imaging techniques (transvaginal ultrasound with or without Doppler, scoring, CT, MRI) to differentiate benign tumour, borderline ovarian tumour (BOT) and malignant ovarian tumor. Differentiate the histological subtypes of BOT (serous, sero-mucinous, mucinous) and prediction in imaging of the possibility of conservative treatment. Methods: The research was carried out over the last 16 years using the terms "MeSH" based on the query of the Medline® database and supplemented by the review of references contained in the meta-analyzes, systematic reviews and original articles included. Results: Endo-vaginal and suprapubic ultrasonography is recommended for analysis of an ovarian mass (grade A). In the case of ultrasound by a referent, subjective analysis is the recommended technique (grade A). In case of echography by a non-referent, the use of "Simple Rules" is recommended (grade A) and should be best combined with subjective analysis to rejoin the performance of a sonographer refer (grade A). In cases of undetermined ovarian lesions in endovaginal ultrasound and suprapubic ultrasound, it is recommended to perform a pelvic MRI (grade A). The MRI protocol should include T2, T1, T1 sequences with fat saturation, diffusion, injected dynamics, and after gadolinium injection (grade B). To characterize an MRI-adnexal image, it is recommended to include a risk score for malignancy (ADNEX-MR/O-RADS) (grade C) in the report and to formulate an anatomopathological hypothesis (Grade C). The predictive signs of benignity in front of a cyst with endocystic vegetations are the low number, the small size, the presence of calcifications and the absence of Doppler flow in case of size greater than 10mm in echography (LP 4) and a curve of type 1 MRI (LP4). MRI is recommended for suspicious lesions of BOT in ultrasound (grade B) or indeterminate lesions in ultrasound (grade A). There is no data to support the usefulness of CT or PET-CT for BOT. Morphological criteria in ultrasound and MRI exist to differentiate BOT from invasive tumors regardless of grade (NP 2). Pelvic MRI is recommended to characterize a tumor suggestive of ultrasound BOT (grade C). No recommendations can be made about the use of combined ultrasound, biological, and menopausal status scores for the diagnosis of BOT. The diagnostic performance of imaging to detect peritoneal implants of BOT is not known. The assessment of the invasiveness of peritoneal implants of imaging BOT has not been evaluated. The association of macroscopic signs in MRI makes it possible to differentiate the different subtypes - serous, sero-mucinous and mucinous (intestinal type) - of BOT, despite the overlap of certain presentations (LP3). The analysis of macroscopic MRI signs must be performed to differentiate the different subtypes of TFO (grade C). No recommendation can be made on imaging prediction of the possibility of conservative BOT treatment.
Borderline ovarian tumors: features and controversial aspects

Abstract:Objective: To investigate features and controversial aspects of the borderline ovarian tumor (BOT), a neoplasm with favorable prognosis representing 10-15% of epithelial ovarian tumors. Study design: : We retrospectively studied all patients treated at our institution from 2000 to 2010 taking into account the age, the stage, the type of surgery, the tumor size, the symptoms, the pre- and post-intervention tumor marker levels (CA125, CA19.9, CA15.3 and CEA), the presence of recurrence, the overall survival (OS), the progression-free survival (PFS). Results: A total of 43 patients were identified. The median age was 49 years (range: 15-82 years). The most frequent FIGO stage was IA (74% of the cases) with a prevalence of serous histotype, and 49% of the patients were asymptomatic. The CA125 level was abnormal in 55% of the patients before surgery, returning to the normal range in all cases after tumor removal. The PFS was 96% and 77% at five and sixty months respectively. Conclusion: The BOT is closer to a benign than to a malignant tumor in the early stages, when confined to the ovary (IA and IB). In these stages conservative surgery is safe and advisable for women seeking offspring. In the other stages the need for a careful and long-term follow-up arises. CA125, despite its modest sensitivity and specificity, has a role in the follow-up of BOT.

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum biomarkers in the management strategy of borderline ovarian tumours (BOT) to make management recommendations. Methods: English and French review of literature from 1990 to 2019 based on publications from Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane, with keywords: borderline ovarian tumors, tumour markers, CA125, CA19 9, ACE, CA72 4, TAG72, HE4, ROMA, mucinous, serous, mucinous, endometrioid ovarian tumours, peritoneal implants, recurrence, overall survival, follow-up. Among 1000 references, 400 were selected and only 30 were screened for this work. Results: Literature review: there is low evidence in literature concerning the discriminating value of serum tumour biomarkers (CA125, CA19-9, CEA, CA72-4, HE4) and specific score between presumed benign ovarian tumour/BOT/ovarian cancer (LE4). Serum CA125 antigen is higher in case of serous borderline ovarian tumour (LE4), increase with the tumor height, the FIGO stage, notably in case of serous borderline ovarian tumor. However, a normal value rate of serum CA125 antigen does not rule out a BOT (LE4). The preoperative positivity rate of CA19 9 in case of TFO is relatively lower than that of CA125 and is higher in mucinous TFO. The preoperative rate of serum CA19 9 antigen increases with the tumour height and the FIGO stage (LE4) and are higher in case of mucinous BOT (LE4). Preoperative rates of serum HE4 are not different between histologic type of BOT. A high level of serum biomarkers (CA125) is a predictive factor of peritoneal implants (LE4) and an independent predictive factor of recurrence (CA125) (LE4). Recommendations: no recommendation can be made about the use of serum tumour biomarkers (CA125, CA19-9, CEA, CA72-4, HE4) or specific score in order to distinguish benign ovarian tumor/borderline ovarian tumor/ovarian cancer in case of indeterminate mass. In case of suspicion of mucinous ovarian tumour on imaging, the systematic dosage of serum CA19-9 antigen can be proposed (grade C). In case of an ovarian indeterminate mass on imaging; dosage of serum HE4 and C125 is recommended. If preoperative dosage of serum tumor biomarkers is normal, their systematic dosage is not recommended in the follow-up of BOT (grade C). If preoperative dosage of CA125 is high, the systematic dosage of CA125 is recommended in the follow-up of BOT with no precisions about the rhythm and the duration of the follow-up (grade B).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the relationship between clinical pathological factors and prognosis.METHODS:Thirty-four cases with borderline ovarian tumors (BOT) and 30 cases with stage I ovarian epithelial cancer admitted in our hospital from Jan.1973 to Dec.2000 were studied retrospectively. All the cases were diagnosed according to the International Histological Classification and Staging of Ovarian Tumors (WHO, 1999).RESULTS:Thirty-seven cases were finally diagnosed of BOT, 6 cases with "microinvasive" had been misinterpreted as stage I ovarian cancer and one had "non-invasive peritoneal implants". Serous (38%) and mucinous (51%) tumors were dominant type of BOT and 95% of tumors were at stage I (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, FIGO). All patients were operated, 11 cases given conservative surgery with a recurrence rate of 9%, 26 cases had adjuvant chemotherapy, cyclophosphamide + adriamycin + cis-platinum used mostly. 5-year and 10 year survival rates were both 100%. The prognosis of BOT is related to pathology and adjuvant therapy.CONCLUSION:Surgery is the main treatment choice of BOT, and the criteria of chemotherapy must be adequately used.
[Impact of urbanization on vegetation phenology in major cities in Yangtze River Delta region].

Abstract:Based on the time series NDVI images from 1998 to 2005 and by the method of moving average, the vegetation phenology in urban areas and buffer zones of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Changzhou, Wuxi and Suzhou in Yangtze River Delta region were calculated. The difference of average phenology in urban areas and buffer zones was analyzed, and the relationship between this difference and the distance away from urban edge was studied. The results showed that in 1998-2005, the urbanization of the cities made the vegetations in their urban area had an earlier start of growing season (SOS), later end of growing season (EOS), longer growing season length (GSL), and smaller NDVIamp (difference of maximal and minimal NDVI in a year). These changes were more obvious in buffer zones if they were closer to urban area. In general, urbanization made the SOS within 4 kilometers away from the urban edge started obviously earlier, and the EOS, GSL and NDVIamp within 10 kilometers away from the urban edge changed obviously. The differences of GSL between urban and buffer zones had a significant logarithmic relationship with the distance away from the urban edge, so did the NDVIamp.
Molecular landscape of borderline ovarian tumours: A systematic review

Abstract:Borderline ovarian tumours (BOTs) show intriguing characteristics distinguishing them from other ovarian tumours. The aim of the systematic review was to analyse the spectrum of molecular changes found in BOTs and discuss their significance in the context of the overall therapeutic approach. The systematic review included articles published between 2000 and 2023 in the databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane. After a detailed analysis of the available publications, we qualified for the systematic review: 28 publications on proto-oncogenes: BRAF, KRAS, NRAS, ERBB2, and PIK3CA, 20 publications on tumour suppressor genes: BRCA1/2, ARID1A, CHEK2, PTEN, 4 on adhesion molecules: CADM1, 8 on proteins: B-catenin, claudin-1, and 5 on glycoproteins: E-Cadherin. In addition, in the further part of the systematic review, we included eight publications on microsatellite instability and three describing loss of heterozygosity in BOT. Molecular changes found in BOTs can vary on a case-by-case basis, identifying carcinogenic mutations through molecular analysis and developing targeted therapies represent significant advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian malignancies. Molecular studies have contributed significantly to our understanding of BOT pathogenesis, but substantial research is still required to elucidate the relationship between ovarian neoplasms and extraneous disease, identify accurate prognostic indicators, and develop targeted therapeutic approaches.

Impact of serum tumor marker determination on the management of women with borderline ovarian tumors: multivariate analysis of a French multicentre study

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the contribution of preoperative serum tumor markers to manage borderline ovarian tumors (BOT). Study design: Retrospective multicentre study including 317 BOT. Serum tumor marker levels of CA125, CA19-9, CEA, and CA15-3 were determined by radio-immunoassay. Results: Among 181 women with serous BOT and 136 women with mucinous BOT, respectively 55 of 114 (48.2%) and 38 of 91 (41.8%) had at least one abnormal value. Women with preoperative tumor marker assays were more likely to have radical treatment (p=0.0001), full staging (p=0.004), and intra-operative histology (p<0.0001). Women with at least one abnormal tumor marker were more likely to undergo laparotomy (p=0.007), to have intra-operative histology (p=0.04) and complete staging (p=0.0008). In multivariate analysis, first-line laparoscopy was associated with abnormal tumor marker levels (OR=9.63; 95%CI=1.40-66.39; p=0.02), while laparotomy was associated with large tumors, bilateral tumors, and ascitis visible on sonography. Conclusion: Serum tumor marker assays modified both preoperative assessment and surgical management of BOT.
The clinical analysis of borderline epithelial ovarian tumors

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical features,management and prognosis of borderline epithelial ovarian tumors(BOT).To study the factors influencing the recurrence and prognosis of BOT.Methods The data of 130 BOT patients diagnosed by surgery and pathology(Peking University People's Hospital,January 1980 to August 2009)were analyzed retrospectively.The postoperative follow-up period ranged from 12 to 240 months.Results The average onset age was 42.3 years old.There were 106 cases of stage Ⅰ,6 cases of stage Ⅱ,18 cases of stage Ⅲ.48 cases were serous,63 cases were mucinous.49.0% patients were with elevated CA125.1% with micropapillary and 0.05% with infiltrative implantation.All patients received operation and 42.3% underwent fertility-sparing procedures.8 cases(6%)relapsed,2 of 18 cases who underwent ovarian cystectomy relapsed.None of the 34 cases who underwent unilateral or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy relapsed.Five or ten-years survival rate of patients who underwent staging operation,unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy or ovarian cystectomy were 100%,100% and 95%,respectively.Conclusions Onset age of borderline epithelial ovarian tumors was younger,more common in mucinous pathologic type,the majority of patients were stage Ⅰ and the prognosis was good.Surgery is the main effective approach for BOT patients.For those with early stage,fertility-sparing surgery is indicated.Micropapillary,infiltrative implantation,residual disease of primary surgery and FIGO tumor stage are factors influencing the recurrence and prognosis.
Twenty-four hour blood pressure record for smokers and nonsmokers.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of smoking on blood pressure trends during a 24-hour period, by analyzing the parameters of the ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). METHODS The results of 289 ABPM tests conducted on patients classified as smokers or nonsmokers were studied. The parameters analyzed were: mean 24-hour, daytime and nighttime systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings; nocturnal dipping of systolic and diastolic pressures and blood pressure load. The patients were classified in four groups according to whether or not they used antihypertensive medication: 1A--nonsmokers using medication; 1B--smokers using medication; 2A--nonsmokers not using medication; and 2B--smokers not using medication. Variables were expressed as minimum, maximum, median, mean and standard deviation values. Univariate analysis was used for comparing the smoking and nonsmoking groups. The significantly different variables from the groups were selected using multivariate analysis. The significance level adopted was 5%. RESULTS Mean daytime systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly higher in the smokers, regardless of whether or not they used antihypertensive medication. Mean nocturnal blood pressure readings were similar between smokers and nonsmokers. Mean 24-hour systolic blood pressure readings were significantly higher in the smokers, regardless of whether or not they used antihypertensive medication. Nocturnal dipping was similar for all groups. Blood pressure loads were consistently and significantly higher in the smokers regardless of medication use. CONCLUSION Mean daytime systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings were consistently higher in the smokers when compared to nonsmokers regardless of antihypertension medication use. Nocturnal dipping was similar for smokers and nonsmokers.
Develop a nomogram to predict overall survival of patients with borderline ovarian tumors

Abstract:Background: The prognosis of borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) has been the concern of clinicians and patients. It is urgent to develop a model to predict the survival of patients with BOTs. Aim: To construct a nomogram to predict the likelihood of overall survival (OS) in patients with BOTs. Methods: A total of 192 patients with histologically verified BOTs and 374 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) were retrospectively investigated for clinical characteristics and survival outcomes. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to eliminate selection bias. Survival was analyzed by using the log-rank test and the restricted mean survival time (RMST). Next, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to identify meaningful independent prognostic factors. In addition, a nomogram model was developed to predict the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival of patients with BOTs. The predictive performance of the model was assessed by using the concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: For clinical data, there was no significant difference in body mass index, preoperative CA199 concentration, or tumor localization between the BOTs group and EOC group. Women with BOTs were significantly younger than those with EOC. There was a significant difference in menopausal status, parity, preoperative serum CA125 concentration, Federation International of gynecology and obstetrics (FIGO) stage, and whether patients accepted postoperative adjuvant therapy between the BOT and EOC group. After PSM, patients with BOTs had better overall survival than patients with EOC (P value = 0.0067); more importantly, the 5-year RMST of BOTs was longer than that of EOC (P value = 0.0002, 95%CI -1.137 to -0.263). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that diagnosed age and surgical type were independent risk factors for BOT patient OS (P value < 0.05). A nomogram was developed based on diagnosed age, preoperative serum CA125 and CA199 Levels, surgical type, FIGO stage, and tumor size. Moreover, the c-index (0.959, 95% confidence interval 0.8708-1.0472), calibration plot of 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS, and decision curve analysis indicated the accurate predictive ability of this model. Conclusion: Patients with BOTs had a better prognosis than patients with EOC. The nomogram we constructed might be helpful for clinicians in personalized treatment planning and patient counseling.
Phosphatation of zeolite H-ZSM-5: a combined microscopy and spectroscopy study.

Abstract:A variety of phosphated zeolite H-ZSM-5 samples are investigated by using a combination of Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, single pulse (27)Al, (29)Si, (31)P, (1)H-(31)P cross polarization (CP), (27)Al-(31)P CP, and (27)Al 3Q magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and N2 physisorption. This approach leads to insights into the physicochemical processes that take place during phosphatation. Direct phosphatation of H-ZSM-5 promotes zeolite aggregation, as phosphorus does not penetrate deep into the zeolite material and is mostly found on and close to the outer surface of the zeolite, acting as a glue. Phosphatation of pre-steamed H-ZSM-5 gives rise to the formation of a crystalline tridymite AlPO4 phase, which is found in the mesopores of dealuminated H-ZSM-5. Framework aluminum species interacting with phosphorus are not affected by hydrothermal treatment. Dealuminated H-ZSM-5, containing AlPO4 , retains relatively more framework Al atoms and acid sites during hydrothermal treatment than directly phosphated H-ZSM-5.
The Clinical Analysis of 129 Cases with Borderline Ovarian Tumors

Abstract:To study the clinical features and management of borderline ovarian tumor(BOT).One hundred and twenty nine cases with BOT were retrospectively analysed.The mean age was37.8years old.Stage:Ⅰ,126cases(97.7%);Ⅱ,1case(0.8%);Ⅲ,2cases(1.5%).Histological type:mucinous,83cases(64.3%);serous,43cases(33.4%);mixed,3cases(2.3%).One case(0.8%)relapsed,the mean dura-tion of follow-up is13.1years(2~24).One died of intercurrent disease after13years of surgery,one(stageⅡ)was alive with disease free for13years,and two(stageⅢ)died of disease postoperation.The5,10and20-year survival was97.5%,81.0%and79.0%,respectively.[Conclusions]Surgery is the main treatment for BOT.In stageⅠdisease,conservative surgery is indicated when fertility is desired by the young patient,while radi-cal surgery should be performed on advanced disease.Cox regression model analysis shows the stage is the main prognosis factor of BOT.Adjuvant therapy after surgery can't improve the prognosis of BOT.

Abstract:Objective To study the clinical characteristics,therapy and clinicopathologic factors affecting recurrence of borderline ovarian tumors(BOTs).Methods 47 cases with BOTs admitted in Peking University People's Hospital from Aug.2004 to Jun.2009 were studied retrospectively.Results 39 cases(82.98%)were stageⅠ,3 cases(6.38%)were stageⅡ and 5 cases(10.64%)were stage Ⅲ.41 cases(87.23%)contained papillary or solid patterns showing blood flow by preoperative color Doppler ultrasound and among which 13 cases(31.71%)with low resistance blood flow.CA125 levels were elevated in 25 patients(55.56%)and CA199 elevated in 10(26.32%)patients.All patients underwent surgery as the initial treatment,of which 24 cases underwent conservative surgery with a recurrence rate of 16.67%.The recurrence rate of 23 cases who underwent radical surgery was 8.69%.15 cases(31.91%)received postoperative chemotherapy.The average time of recurrence was 20.83 months(from 7 months to 3 years).2 death were reported during follow-up.Conclusions Patients with high-risk factors of recurrence should received postoperative chemotherapy which may contribute to improve the prognosis.

Abstract:Borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs), which are a special type of epithelial tumor of the ovary, lie between benign and malignant tumors and have low malignant potential. Due to the fact that the early symptoms of these tumors are relatively subtle, they are not easy to diagnose clinically. This study explores advancements in clinical detection methods and provides a comprehensive overview of molecules such as cell migration factors, cell transcription factors, cell damage repair factors, cell cycle regulators, and tumor suppressor genes that are related to the development of BOTs and their related mechanisms in recent years, thus aiming to provide more sensitive, specific, and efficient differential diagnosis and treatment plans for patients to improve their prognosis and survival outcomes.

Abstract:A new and facile access to spirolactams based on the thermal rearrangement of tertiary and secondary enamino carboxamides has been developed. The enamine group of an enamino carboxamide, in which no electron-withdrawing group is present in the enophile, can be involved in the ene reaction and the enamino carboxamide can be transformed into enamino or imino spirolactams. In the case of secondary carboxamido enamines, the diastereoselectivity is higher than 98%. If chiral nonracemic analogs are utilized, 50-54% enantiomeric excesses can be achieved in the final products.

Abstract:Borderline ovarian tumors (BOTS) are rare neoplasms of intermediate aggressiveness between cystadenomas and low-grade ovarian cancers (lgOvCa), which they share some molecular resemblances with. In contrast to the most frequent and well-described high-grade ovarian carcinomas (hgOvCa), the molecular background of BOTS and lgOvCa is less thoroughly characterized. Here, we aimed to analyze genetic variants in crucial tumor suppressors and oncogenes in BOTS (with or without the BRAF V600E mutation), lgOvCa, and hgOvCa in two gene panels using next-generation sequencing. Then, we verified the existence of selected polymorphisms by Sanger sequencing. Finally, Western blot analyses were carried out to check the impact of the selected polymorphisms on the expression of the corresponding proteins. Our study contributes to the molecular characterization of ovarian neoplasms, demonstrating divergent polymorphic patterns pointing to distinct signaling pathways engaged in their development. Certain mutations seem to play an important role in BOTS without the BRAF V600E variant (KRAS) and in lgOvCa (KRAS and NRAS), but not in hgOvCa. Additionally, based on multivariable regression analyses, potential biomarkers in BOTS (PARP1) and hgOvCa (FANCI, BRCA2, TSC2, FANCF) were identified. Noteworthy, for some of the analyzed genes, such as FANCI, FANCD2, and FANCI, FANCF, TSC2, the status of BRCA1/2 and TP53, respectively, turned out to be crucial. Our results shed new light on the similarities and differences in the polymorphic patterns between ovarian tumors of diverse aggressiveness. Furthermore, the biomarkers identified herein are of potential use as predictors of the prognosis and/or response to therapy.

Characteristics Patients with Borderline Ovarian Tumor at Sanglah General Hospital: From Pre- to Post-operative Approach

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Specific epidemiology data of borderline ovarian tumor (BOT) might be beneficial for the early diagnosis of BOT. The scarcity of BOT epidemiological data in Indonesia urged the writer to study further. AIM: The objectives of the study were to obtain the characteristics of BOT patients in Sanglah General Hospital between 2018 and 2019 according to sociodemographic, hormonal, clinical, and patient outcome factors. METHODOLOGY: This is a descriptive retrospective study. Data were obtained from patient’s medical records at medical records installation Sanglah General Hospital between March 2020 and July 2020. Descriptive data collected from medical records were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and presented in tables and narrative form. RESULTS: From sociodemographic factors, we found that majority of BOT patients were >40 years old, multiparous women, married, low educated, housewives, and had normal BMI. From hormonal factors, we found that experienced menarche between 11 and 15 years old, most of the patients were already menopause, did not use any contraception. From clinical factors, we found that many were referral cases, with abdominal pain as the main complaint, varied CA 125 and risk of malignancy index levels, unilateral mass, suspected with malignant ovarian cyst when being diagnosed earlier. From patient outcome factors, we found that the majority underwent definitive surgery with no post-operative CA 125 level, no malignant cells on cytology examination, borderline mucinous type in both frozen section and paraffin block examination, and followed up after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians could use these characteristics as a reference in diagnosing a patient who fits the profile.
Clinical Characteristics of Borderline Ovarian Tumors and Stage I Epithelial Ovarian Cancer:An Analysis of 143 Cases

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the clinical pathological characteristics and high risk factors for borderline ovarian tumor (BOT) and stage I epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). METHODS A total of 91 patients with BOT and 52 patients with stage IEOC who were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Gynecology, Peking University People's Hospital from November 2002 to May 2010 were recruited in this study. The patients' clinical characteristics were reviewed respectively and compared between the two groups. RESULTS The women in BOT group were significantly younger than those in EOC group (41.16 ± 14.95 vs. 50.90 ± 14.37,P<0.01). Compared with women with BOT, women with EOC were more likely to be post-menopausal(42.3% vs. 23.1%,P=0.016) and more with family history of malignant tumors (26.9% vs. 13.2%,P=0.04).There were no significant differences in the size of tumors and the serum level of tumor markers. But the size of solid portion of the tumor of EOC was significantly larger than that of BOT(P<0.01). The extent of the increase of CP2 among the patients with EOC was higher than that among the patients with BOT(256.99 vs. 116.59, P=0.028). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in tumors' histopathological type(P<0.01). The serous and mucous tumors were more common in EOC group (90.1%, 82/91). In contrary, endometrioid, clear cells and mixed epithelial cancers were more common in EOC group than serous and mucous cancers (44.2%, 23/52). CONCLUSION Although the clinical presentation of patients with stage I EOC was similar to that of those with BOT, there were significant differences in the patients' age, post-menopausal or not, family history of malignant tumors, size of solid portion of tumors, extent of the increase of the tumor biomarker, especially of CP2 and tumors histopathological type. These clinicopathological characteristics might be helpful for us to make different diagnosis.
A Novel Case of Recurrent Mucinous Borderline Ovarian Tumor: Early Relapse and Fatal Outcome

Abstract:Unlike ovarian carcinomas, borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) are associated with a favorable prognosis: their recurrence rate is around 5–7%, and the survival rate is more than 97% when diagnosed early. There are only a few reports of recurrence and fatal outcomes. Herein, we report a novel case of recurrent mucinous BOT, with a literature review. A 63-year-old woman presented to a local doctor with abdominal fullness. She was diagnosed as having a polycystic tumor. The lesion was suspected to be a mucinous BOT (M-BOT) on magnetic resonance imaging. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed no digestive cancerous lesions, and surgery was performed. Intra-operative diagnosis confirmed the diagnosis, and total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy were performed. The final pathological diagnosis was non-invasive M-BOT (stage I c1 (T1c1N0M0)). The result of immunohistochemical staining supported the diagnosis of primary ovarian mucinous tumor.Four months after surgery, relapse occurred. Blood tests revealed an elevated carbohydrate antigen 19-9 level, and computed tomography revealed multiple liver metastases, peritoneal dissemination, left ureter infiltration, and carcinomatous peritonitis. Although the patient underwent chemotherapy, she died. This case of a very short progression-free and overall survival in stage I M-BOT indicates that some M-BOTs could result in fatal clinical outcomes despite diagnosis at an early stage. Frequent follow-up appointments after surgery could help detect relapse and increase survival in such cases.
