Abstract:Architected metastructures with beam-like shape configurations have demonstrated promising mechanical performance due to their corrugation-induced geometric nonlinearity. Extensibility of the metabeams caused by corrugation plays a role in the geometric nonlinearity, which, however, has been omitted in the literature. Motivated by investigating the influence of stretching (or shrinking) on the mechanical characteristics, this study analytically and numerically investigates the metabeams designed with different corrugation patterns. A new discretized model is developed to considers the extensibility of the metastructures by modifying the Hencky bar-chain method (HBM). A size-dependent (i.e., length scale factor 1) analytical model is developed using the modified couple-stress theory and closed-form results are obtained. Good agreements are observed between the HBM and theoretical results. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the influence of extensibility and length scale factor on the mechanical behavior the metabeams with the rhombille, cylindrical, hexagonal and basketweave corrugations. Optimal pattern ratio (i.e., pattern diameter-to-pattern gap ratio D-pat/W-pat) and geometric ratio (i.e., width-to-thickness ratio W/t) are obtained by minimizing the self-weight of the patterned plates. The reported HBM accurately predict the mechanical behavior of extensible metabeams, which can be used to design plate-shaped advanced structures for applications requiring rigidity and well deformation recovery.
Dynamic Model of Flexible Structures with Twisted-and-Coiled Polymer Actuators

Abstract:With the increasing exploitation of space, ultra-large spacecraft or giant deployable spatial structure becomes a new trend. These large structures suffer from dynamic loads, such as structural deformation and low-frequency vibration caused by on-board equipment and the thermal shock. In this paper, twisted and coiled polymer actuators (TCPAs) were used to suppress the low-frequency vibration of flexible structure. Two TCPAs were symmetrically mounted on both sides of a cantilever beam, to generate sinusoidal actuation force. The model of thermally driven TCPA was developed for force control of TCPAs, and a dynamic response model of cantilever beam with TCPAs was then proposed. Actuating experiment in forced air was implemented based on proposed model using identified parameters from experimental data. The results showed that in actuating experiment, the average errors between the experiment and model are within 5% at different current amplitudes.

Abstract:In this study, a novel adaptive beam string structure (ABSS) designed to cope with external loading through sensing and mechanical actuation was developed. Unlike traditional beam string structures, ABSS further contains the monitoring and controlling systems, which allows it to sense and react to loading in real-time. The active control method for ABSS based on internal force minimization was established by using the strategy search algorithm (SSA) and strategy prediction network (SPN). SSA is a global search algorithm proposed through combining the strengths of genetic algorithm and gradient descent, and SPN is an artificial neural network established by applying the backpropagation learning algorithm. The downscaled model and test scheme of ABSS were designed and deployed to clarify its effectiveness. The numerical simulation and field experiments were conducted, and simulation results agree well with measurements. Through comparative analysis of simulation and test results, the adaption of ABSS to loading and validity of control method were verified, and ABSS possesses good control capability on internal forces, which is reflected in two ways: 1) reducing the beam stress responses; and 2) improving the beam stress distribution. The research methods and conclusions of this paper can provide valuable references for the design, fabrication, and control of adaptive structures.
Semi-analytical analysis on free vibration of cantilever beam with particle damping based on multiscale method

Abstract:Passive particle damper is characterized by simple principle and well behavior and is widely used as structural damping device. In severe environment, the high-frequency vibration of structure can be easily excited and the attenuation characteristics of multi-mode oscillation are coupled because of the nonlinear character of particle damping. To reveal the mechanism of this phenomenon, the cantilever beam with concentrated mass at free end was modelled by modal synthesis method and the motion of particle assembly was simulated by discrete element method. Then, a semi-analytical model was established based on the ball-wall coupling in the light of multiscale theory. Numerical analysis indicates that particle damper is a very effective damping device and the behavior of damper is related to the mode of vibration. In multi-order modes vibration, compared with signle-mode oscillation, the amplitude attenuation of low-order-mode is delayed, while the amplitude attenuation of high-order-mode is quickened. It can be concluded that the equivalent damping ratio for single-mode vibration can't represent the capacity of particle damping in complex vibration condition.

Abstract:The structural symmetric breaking of the spatial structure will enhance the coupling dynamic behaviors and bring new challenges for the dynamic analysis on the spatial structure inevitably. The main contribution of this paper is proposing a structure-preserving iteration method to investigate the effects of the dynamic symmetry-breaking factors on the dynamic behaviors of the rigid-flexible coupling systems. Firstly, the spatial flexible damping beam assembled with two particles on both ends is simplified as an asymmetric spatial dumbbell-type model. For this model, the coupling dynamic equations are presented based on the Hamiltonian variational principle. Then, connecting the symplectic precise integration method for the ordinary differential equations mainly controlling the plane motion of the model and the generalized multi-symplectic scheme for the partial differential equation mainly controlling the transverse vibration of the beam, a structure-preserving numerical iteration method is proposed, which provides a new way to analysis the dynamic behaviors of the coupling problems with the symmetric breaking. Finally, the effects of the absolute mass and the mass ratio of the additional particles on the orbit radius, the orbit true anomaly velocity, the attitude angle velocity of the model and the transverse vibration of the flexible beam are reproduced by using the structure-preserving numerical iteration method in the numerical simulations. Particularly, the effects of the additional particles on the attitude stability of the model and the vibration dissipation of the flexible damping beam are investigated, which gives some guidance for the attitude adjustment strategy and the vibration control method for the spatial flexible structure with the structural symmetric breaking.

Dynamic Flexoelectric Actuation and Vibration Control of Beams

Abstract:A flexoelectric cantilever beam actuated by the converse flexoelectric effect is evaluated and its analytical and experimental data are compared in this study. A line-electrode on the top beam surface and a bottom surface electrode are used to generate an electric field gradient in the beam, so that internal stresses can be induced and applied to distributed actuations. The dynamic control effectiveness of the beam is investigated with a mathematical model and is validated by laboratory experiments. Analyses show that the actuation stress induced by the converse flexoelectric effect is in the longitudinal direction and results in a bending control moment to the flexoelectric beam since the stress in the thickness is inhomogeneous. It is found that thinner line-electrode radius and thinner flexoelectric beam lead to larger control effects on the beam. The position of the line-electrode on the top surface of the beam also influences the control effect. When the line-electrode is close to the fixed end, it induces a larger tip displacement than that is close to the free end. Analytical results agree well with laboratory experimental data. This study of flexoelectric actuation and control provides a fundamental understanding of flexoelectric actuation mechanisms.

Abstract:Vibration response and amplitude frequency characteristics of a controlled nonlinear mesoscale beam under periodic loading are studied. A method including a general analytical expression for harmonic balance solution to periodic vibration and an updated cycle iteration algorithm for amplitude frequency relation of periodic response is developed. A vibration equation with the general expression of nonlinear terms for periodic response is derived and a general analytical expression for harmonic balance solution is obtained. An updated cycle iteration procedure is proposed to obtain amplitude frequency relation. Periodic vibration response with various frequencies can be calculated uniformly using the method. The method can take into account the effect of higher harmonic components on vibration response, and it is applicable to various periodic vibration analyses including principal resonance, super-harmonic resonance, and multiple stationary responses. Numerical results demonstrate that the developed method has good convergence and accuracy. The response amplitude should be determined by the periodic solution with multiple harmonic terms instead of only the first harmonic term. The damping effect on response illustrates that vibration responses of the nonlinear meso beam can be reduced by feedback control with certain damping gain. The amplitude frequency characteristics including anti-resonance and resonant response variation have potential application to the vibration control design of nonlinear meso-scale structure systems.

Abstract:“Smart” continua with integrated sensor/actuator for structural identification and control have drawn much attention in recent years due to the rapid development of high-performance “smart” structures. The continua are distributed and flexible in nature. Thus, distributed dynamic measurement and active vibration control are of importance to their high-demanding performance. In this paper, continua (shells or plates) integrated with distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators are studied using a finite element technique. A new piezoelectric finite element with internal degrees of freedom is derived. Two control algorithms, namely, constant gain feedback control and Lyapunov control, are implemented. Structural identification and control of a plate model with distributed piezoelectric sensor/actuator is studied. Distributed modal voltage and control effectiveness of mono and biaxially polarized piezoelectric actuators are evaluated.

Abstract:To control the stochastic vibration of a vibration-sensitive instrument supported on a beam, the beam is designed as a sandwich structure with magneto-rheological visco-elastomer (MRVE) core. The MRVE has dynamic properties such as stiffness and damping adjustable by applied magnetic fields. To achieve better vibration control effectiveness, the optimal bounded parametric control for the MRVE sandwich beam with supported mass under stochastic and deterministic support motion excitations is proposed, and the stochastic and shock vibration suppression capability of the optimally controlled beam with multi-mode coupling is studied. The dynamic behavior of MRVE core is described by the visco-elastic Kelvin-Voigt model with a controllable parameter dependent on applied magnetic fields, and the parameter is considered as an active bounded control. The partial differential equations for horizontal and vertical coupling motions of the sandwich beam are obtained and converted into the multi-mode coupling vibration equations with the bounded nonlinear parametric control according to the Galerkin method. The vibration equations and corresponding performance index construct the optimal bounded parametric control problem. Then the dynamical programming equation for the control problem is derived based on the dynamical programming principle. The optimal bounded parametric control law is obtained by solving the programming equation with the bounded control constraint. The controlled vibration responses of the MRVE sandwich beam under stochastic and shock excitations are obtained by substituting the optimal bounded control into the vibration equations and solving them. The further remarkable vibration suppression capability of the optimal bounded control compared with the passive control and the influence of the control parameters on the stochastic vibration suppression effectiveness are illustrated with numerical results. The proposed optimal bounded parametric control strategy is applicable to smart visco-elastic composite structures under deterministic and stochastic excitations for improving vibration control effectiveness.

Abstract:Vibration mitigation of moving flexible structures is a key issue in many applications. Examples include antennas, solar arrays, radar reflectors, and manipulator arms, especially in the aerospace sector. These structures typically consist of inter-connected slender and flexible elements moved by external actuators to reach specific configurations and positions. The movements excite vibrations, which lead to the risk of structural and fatigue failures; once in position, residual vibrations can be further amplified by structure lightness, causing bad performance and malfunctioning of onboard sensors. This paper proposes an effective technique to minimise the vibration of moving flexible structures by calculating the control points of a time-parametrised B-spline representing the shape of the motion law. A testing case of a rotating cantilever beam is considered. Validation using multi-flexible-body simulation software has shown the method’s effectiveness in minimising residual vibrations.

Abstract:Periodically embedded specified materials and laminas into the beam of a beam-mass system to form a stiffness-driven nonhomogeneous beam having the potential to shift its specific stiffness to avoid the happening of large amplitude vibration and resonance is worthy of note. However, if the arrangement of composed materials and layers of the beam is changed, the developed model generally has to be reestablished. To propose a model that can be used to analyze beams consisting of different assemblies of materials and laminas is of great importance. Another point is using specified materials and laminas, which are periodically embedded into a beam to form transversely periodic arrays, to make the beam have the capability to change its specific stiffness to satisfy designing requirement. The Fourier-series based approach is employed to take into account the periodicity of material properties and matching conditions across laminas' interfaces. The influence produced by the arrays to the dynamics of the system is examined. Result shows that the axial Young's modulus and density of the proposed beam are biaxial periodic functions. Different arrangements of embedded arrays bring different stiffness shifting potential of the beam to reduce the vibration of the system. With proper choice of the stiffness and thickness ratios between the arrays and basic layers, the growth of small amplitude vibration into large motion regime can be attenuated. Meanwhile, by changing the thickness ratios in the width and height directions, there exist seven possible compositions of the beam. It discloses that despite without considering the material damping, the proposed beam still has good ability to diminish the beam vibration even after the mass left the beam.
A Novel Sensor Design for a Cantilevered Mead-Marcus-type Sandwich Beam Model by the Order-reduction Technique

Abstract:A novel space-discretized Finite Differences-based model reduction, introduced in (Liu,Guo,2020) is extended to the partial differential equations (PDE) model of a multi-layer Mead-Marcus-type sandwich beam with clamped-free boundary conditions. The PDE model describes transverse vibrations for a sandwich beam whose alternating outer elastic layers constrain viscoelastic core layers, which allow transverse shear. The major goal of this project is to design a single tip velocity sensor to control the overall dynamics on the beam. Since the spectrum of the PDE can not be constructed analytically, the so-called multipliers approach is adopted to prove that the PDE model is exactly observable with sub-optimal observation time. Next, the PDE model is reduced by the ``order-reduced'' Finite-Differences technique. This method does not require any type of filtering though the exact observability as $h\to 0$ is achieved by a constraint on the material constants. The main challenge here is the strong coupling of the shear dynamics of the middle layer with overall bending dynamics. This complicates the absorption of coupling terms in the discrete energy estimates. This is sharply different from a single-layer (Euler-Bernoulli) beam.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to develop a comprehensive dynamic modeling and analysis method based on the absolute node coordinate method to predict the impact of the member flexibility on the dynamic performance of scissor deployable structure under the framework of flexible multi-body dynamics. In the process, three locking problems in the classical plane shear beam element are reviewed and discussed. Then a novel non-locking planar beam element is proposed to solve the element locking problem, and the dynamic model of the scissor deployable structure is established. Next, the cantilever beam, simply supported beam and flexible simple pendulum are respectively used to verify the correctness of the proposed non-locking beam element from the static and dynamic perspectives. Finally, the simulation and experiment results show that the proposed new non-locking element and normal matrix modeling method can effectively evaluate the dynamic performance of deployable structure and improve the computational efficiency. This study not only provides theoretical guidance for the dynamic behavior analysis and prediction of scissor deployable structure, but also offers reference for the layout and design of same type mechanisms.
Experimental validation of a model for a self-adaptive beam-slider system

Abstract:A system consisting of a doubly clamped beam with an attached body (slider) free to move along the beam has been studied recently by multiple research groups. Under harmonic base excitation, the system has the capacity to passively adapt itself (by slowly changing the slider position) to yield either high or low vibrations. The central contributions of this work are the refinement of the recently developed system model with regard to the finite stiffness of the beam's clamping, followed by a thorough validation of this model against experimental results. With the intent to achieve repeatable and robust self-adaption, a new prototype of the system was designed, featuring, in particular, a continuously adjustable gap size and a concave inner contact geometry. The initial beam model is updated based on the results of an Experimental Nonlinear Modal Analysis of the system (without slider). By varying the excitation level and frequency in a wide range, all known types of behavior were reproduced in the experiment. The simulation results of the updated model with slider are in excellent agreement with the measurements, both qualitatively (type of behavior) and quantitatively. Minor deviations are attributed to the system's sensitivity to inevitable uncertainties, in particular with regard to the friction coefficient and the linear natural frequency. It is thus concluded that the proposed model is well-suited for further analysis of its intriguing dynamics and for model-based optimization for technical applications such as energy harvesting.

Abstract:Summary As a typical high‐dimensional nonlinear dynamic problem, the difficulties of the dynamic analysis on the spatial flexible damping beam mostly result from the coupling between the spatial motion and the transverse vibration. Considering the coupling effect and the weak structure damping, the dynamic behaviors of the spatial flexible beam are investigated by a complex structure‐preserving method in this paper. Based on the variational principle, the dynamic model of the spatial flexible damping beam is established, which can be decoupled into two parts approximately, one controls the spatial motion and another mainly controls the transverse vibration. For the first part, the classic fourth‐order Runge–Kutta method can be used to discrete it expediently. For the latter part, based on the generalized multi‐symplectic idea, the approximate symmetric form as well as the generalized multi‐symplectic conservation law is formulated, and a 15‐point scheme equivalent to the Preissmann scheme is constructed. Numerical iterations are performed for six typical initial cases between the two parts to study the dynamic behaviors of the spatial flexible beam. In the numerical experiments, the effects of the damping factor and the initial conditions (including the initial radial velocity and the initial attitude angle) on the dynamic behaviors of the spatial flexible beam are investigated in detail. From the numerical results, it can be concluded that the damping effect on the long‐time dynamic behaviors of the spatial flexible beam could not be neglected even if it is weak; the numerical method proposed in this paper owns the tiny numerical dissipation as well as the excellent long‐time numerical stability. Vibration Control Analysis of a Smart Flexible Cantilever Beam Using Smart Material

Abstract:This paper features the modeling and design of a pole placement and output Feedback control technique for the Active Vibration Control (AVC) of a smart flexible cantilever beam for a Single Input Single Output (SISO) case. Measurements and actuation actions done by using patches of piezoelectric layer, it is bonded to the master structure as sensor/actuator at a certain position of the cantilever beam.The smart structure is modeled based on the concept of piezoelectric theory, Bernoulli -Euler beam theory, using Finite Element Method (FEM) and the state space techniques. The number of modes is reduced using the controllability and observability grammians retaining the first threedominant vibratory modes, and for the reduced system, a control law is designed using pole placement and output feedback techniques. The analyzed case studies concern the vibration reduction of a cantilever beam with a collocated symmetric piezoelectric sensor/actuator pair bonded on the surface. The transverse displacement time history, for an initial displacement field at the free end, is evaluated. Results are compared with other works, and the control design shows that Pole Placement method is an effective method for vibration suppression of the beam and settling time reduction.
Dynamic Analysis and Vibration Control of Additively Manufactured Thin-Walled Polylactic Acid Polymer (PLAP) and PLAP Composite Beam Structures: Numerical Investigation and Experimental Validation

Abstract:This study primarily presents a numerical investigation of the dynamic behavior and vibration control in thin-walled, additively manufactured (AM) beam structures, validated through experimental results. Vibration control in thin-walled structures has gained significant attention recently because vibrations can severely affect structural integrity. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize these vibrations or keep them within acceptable limits to ensure the structure's integrity. In this study, the AM beam structures were made of polylactic acid polymer (PLAP), short carbon fiber reinforced in PLAP (SCFR|PLAP), and continuous carbon fiber reinforced in PLAP (CCFR|PLAP), with 0°|0° layer orientations. The finite element modeling (FEM) of the AM beam structures integrated with macro fiber composite (MFC) was carried out in Abaqus. The initial four modal frequencies of bending modes (BMs) and their respective modal shapes were acquired through numerical simulation. It is crucial to highlight the numerical findings that reveal discrepancies in the 1st modal frequencies of the beams, ranging up to 1.5% compared to their respective experimental values. For the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th modal frequencies, the discrepancies are within 10%. Subsequently, frequency response analysis (FRA) was carried out to observe the frequency-dependent vibration amplitude spectrum at the initial four BM frequencies. Despite discrepancy in the amplitude values between the numerical and experimental datasets, there was consistency in the overall amplitude behavior as frequency varied. THz spectroscopy was performed to identify voids or misalignment errors in the actual beam models. Finally, vibration amplitude control using MFC (M8507-P2) was examined in each kinematically excited numerical beam structure. After applying a counterforce with the MFC, the controlled vibration amplitudes for the PLAP, SCFR|PLAP, and CCFR|PLAP configurations were approximately ±19 μm, ±16 μm, and ±13 μm, respectively. The trend in the controlled amplitudes observed in the numerical findings was consistent with the experimental results. The numerical findings of the study reveal valuable insights for estimating trends related to vibration control in AM beam structures.

Abstract:This paper proposes a piecewise model for dynamic damping,considering the structure damping changed by the PZT's dynamical output and the coupling effect between the structure and PZT material in the smart material structure.Due to the coupling effect,the rigidity and damping of the whole structure will change.The static viscosity damping model thus cannot accurately describe the whole structure.On the contrary,the proposed model offers an accurate description for the dynamic output and system magnitude response of the integrated PZT systems,which was verified by experiment results of clamped beam considering three modes.

Abstract:This work introduces a novel metastructure designed for quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) properties based on the High Static and Low Dynamic Stiffness mechanism. The metastructure consists of four-unit cells arranged in parallel, each incorporating inclined beams and semicircular arches. Under vertical compression, the inclined beams exhibit buckling and snap-through behavior, contributing negative stiffness, while the semicircular arches provide positive stiffness through bending-dominated behavior. The design procedure to achieve QZS is established and validated through finite element analysis and experimental investigations. The static analysis confirms a QZS region for specific displacement. Dynamic behavior is analyzed using a nonlinear dynamic equation solved using the Harmonic Balance Method, validated experimentally with transmissibility curves showing sudden jump down with effective vibration isolation. Parametric studies with varied payload masses and excitation amplitudes further verify the ability to of metastructure to attenuate vibrations effectively in low-frequency ranges.

Abstract:Decreasing the vibration amplitude of the manipulator in the Space Manipulator Systems (SMS) with a given mass limitation is an effective way to reduce the control costs for the SMS. In this paper, the dynamic response of the SMS modeled by a flexible hub-beam with a step-variable cross-section excited by an external torque is investigated employing a new complex structure-preserving method. The dynamic model of the flexible hub-beam with a step-variable cross-section is deduced firstly. Then, a new structure-preserving method connecting the symplectic precise integration method and the generalized multi-symplectic method is proposed, in which, the time-consuming iteration is avoided and the simulation time is saved. In the numerical simulations, several simple cases for the step-variable cross-section are considered and the stable vibration amplitudes of the flexible beam at the free end are reported. The main contribution of this work is proposing a structure-preserving method for the solving the coupling dynamic problems of the hub-beam system to provide some suggestions on the structure design for the SMS directly.
